AIMS: We aim to characterize the clinical and proteomic profiles of patients at risk of developing heart failure (HF), with and without coronary artery disease (CAD) or prior myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS AND RESULTS: HOMAGE evaluated the effect of spironolactone on plasma and serum markers of fibrosis over 9 months of follow-up in participants with (or at risk of having) CAD, and raised natriuretic peptides. In this post hoc analysis, patients were classified as (i) neither CAD nor MI; (ii) CAD; or (iii) MI. Proteomic between-group differences were evaluated through logistic regression and narrowed using backward stepwise selection and bootstrapping. Among the 527 participants, 28% had neither CAD or MI, 31% had CAD, and 41% had prior MI. Compared with people with neither CAD nor MI, those with CAD had higher baseline plasma concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7), galectin-4 (GAL4), plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), and lower plasma peptidoglycan recognition protein 1 (PGLYRP1), whilst those with a history of MI had higher plasma MMP-7, neurotrophin-3 (NT3), pulmonary surfactant-associated protein D (PSPD), and lower plasma tumour necrosis factor-related activation-induced cytokine (TRANCE). Proteomic signatures were similar for patients with CAD or prior MI. Treatment with spironolactone was associated with an increase of MMP7, NT3, and PGLYRP1 at 9 months. CONCLUSIONS: In patients at risk of developing HF, those with CAD or MI had a different proteomic profile regarding inflammatory, immunological, and collagen catabolic processes.

Pregnant women with cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors are highly prone to develop cardiovascular disease later in life. Thus, recent guidelines suggest extending the follow-up period to 1 yr after delivery. We aimed to evaluate cardiovascular remodeling during pregnancy and determine which CVR factors and potential biomarkers predict postpartum cardiac and vascular reverse remodeling (RR). Our study included a prospective cohort of 76 healthy and 54 obese and/or hypertensive and/or with gestational diabetes pregnant women who underwent transthoracic echocardiography, pulse-wave velocity (PWV), and blood collection at the 1st trimester (1T) and 3rd trimester (3T) of pregnancy as well as at the 1st/6th/12th mo after delivery. Generalized linear mixed-effects models was used to evaluate the extent of RR and its potential predictors. Pregnant women develop cardiac hypertrophy, as confirmed by a significant increase in left ventricular mass (LVM). Moreover, ventricular filling pressure (E/e') and atrial volume increased significantly during gestation. Significant regression of left ventricular (LV) volume, LVM, and filling pressures was observed as soon as 1 mo postpartum. The LV global longitudinal strain worsened slightly and recovered at 6 mo postpartum. PWV decreased significantly from 1T to 3T and normalized at 1 mo postpartum. We found that arterial hypertension, smoking habits, and obesity were independent predictors of increased LVM during pregnancy and postpartum. High C-reactive protein (CRP) and low ST2/IL33-receptor levels are potential circulatory biomarkers of worse LVM regression. Arterial hypertension, age, and gestational diabetes positively correlated with PWV. Altogether, our findings pinpoint arterial hypertension as a critical risk factor for worse RR and CRP, and ST2/IL33 receptors as potential biomarkers of postpartum hypertrophy reversal.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study describes the impact of cardiovascular risk factors (CVR) in pregnancy-induced remodeling and postpartum reverse remodeling (up to 1 yr) by applying advanced statistic methods (multivariate generalized linear mixed-effects models) to a prospective cohort of pregnant women. Aiming to extrapolate to pathological conditions, this invaluable "human model" allowed us to demonstrate that arterial hypertension is a critical CVR for worse RR and that ST2/IL33-receptors and CRP are potential biomarkers of postpartum hypertrophy reversal.

We report the case of idiopathic non-cirrhotic portal hypertension associated with systemic lupus erythematosus in a 43-year-old woman who suffered from breast cancer. We review this rare condition, as well as its diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Objective.To develop practical recommendations, based on the best available evidence and experience, on the nursing management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Methods. The usual consensus methodology was used, with a nominal group, systematic reviews (SRs), and Delphi survey. The expert panel, consisting of rheumatology nurses, rheumatologists, a psychologist, a physiotherapist, and a patient, defined the scope, the users, the topics on which to explore the evidence and on which to issue recommendations. Results.Three PICO questions evaluated the efficacy and safety of pulmonary rehabilitation and non-pharmacological measures for the treatment of chronic cough and gastroesophageal reflux by means of SR of the literature. With the results of the reviews, 15 recommendations were established for which the degree of agreement was obtained with a Delphi survey. Three recommendations were rejected in the second round. The 12 recommendations were in patient assessment (n=4); patient education (n=4); and risk management (n=4). Only one recommendation was based on available evidence, while the remaining were based on expert opinion. The degree of agreement ranged from 77% to 100%. Conclusion.This document presents a series of recommendations with the aim of improving the prognosis and quality of life of patients with RA-ILD. Nursing knowledge and implementation of these recommendations can improve the follow-up and prognosis of patients with RA who present with ILD.


Objetivo.Desarrollar recomendaciones prácticas, basadas en la mejor evidencia y experiencia disponible, sobre el manejo de enfermería de los pacientes con artritis reumatoide (AR) y enfermedad pulmonar intersticial (EPI). Métodos. Se utilizó la metodología de consenso en la que un panel de expertos (formado por enfermeras de reumatología, reumatólogos, una psicóloga, una fisioterapeuta y una paciente) definió el ámbito, los usuarios, los temas sobre los que explorar la evidencia y sobre los que emitir recomendaciones. Tres preguntas PICO evaluaron la eficacia y seguridad de la rehabilitación pulmonar y las medidas no farmacológicas para el tratamiento de la tos crónica y el reflujo gastroesofágico mediante la búsqueda de revisiones sistemáticas, excluyendo aquellas cuya calidad era baja, muy baja o críticamente baja, según la herramienta AMSTAR-2. Posteriormente, se hizo una reunión para la formulación de recomendaciones que se presentaron con un resumen de la evidencia a la encuesta Delphi. Resultados.Con los resultados de las revisiones se establecieron 15 recomendaciones cuyo grado de acuerdo osciló entre el 77% y el 100% en la una encuesta Delphi. Tres recomendaciones fueron rechazadas en la segunda ronda: una por la evidencia disponible y los dos restantes se basaron en la opinión de expertos. Las 12 recomendaciones restantes aprobadas se referían a la evaluación del paciente (n=4), a la educación del paciente (n=4) y a la gestión del riesgo (n=4). Conclusión. El conocimiento del consenso Openreumapor parte de enfermería y la aplicación sus 12 recomendaciones basadas en la mejor evidencia y experiencia puede mejorar el seguimiento y el pronóstico de los pacientes con AR que presentan EPI.


Objetivo.Desenvolver recomendações práticas, baseadas na melhor evidência e experiência disponíveis, sobre o manejo de enfermagem de pacientes com artrite reumatoide (AR) e doença pulmonar intersticial (DPI). Métodos.Foi utilizada a metodologia de consenso, com grupo nominal, revisões sistemáticas e levantamento Delphi. O painel de especialistas, formado por enfermeiros reumatologistas, reumatologistas, psicólogo, fisioterapeuta e paciente, definiu o escopo, os usuários, os tópicos sobre os quais explorar as evidências e sobre os quais emitir recomendações. Três questões do PICO avaliaram a eficácia e segurança da reabilitação pulmonar e medidas não farmacológicas para o tratamento da tosse crônica e refluxo gastroesofágico por meio de RS. Aqueles cuja qualidade era baixa, muito baixa ou criticamente baixa, de acordo com a ferramenta AMSTAR-2, foram excluídos. Posteriormente, realizou-se uma reunião para formular recomendações que foram apresentadas com um resumo das evidências ao inquérito Delphi. Resultados. Com os resultados das revisões, foram estabelecidas 15 recomendações cujo grau de concordância entre 77% e 100% foi obtido com uma pesquisa Delphi. Três recomendações foram rejeitadas na segunda rodada. As 12 recomendações referiam-se à avaliação do paciente (n=4); à educação do paciente (n=4); e ao gerenciamento de risco (n=4). Apenas uma recomendação foi baseada nas evidências disponíveis, enquanto as demais foram baseadas na opinião de especialistas. Conclusão. Este documento apresenta uma série de recomendações com o objetivo de melhorar o prognóstico e a qualidade de vida dos pacientes com AR-ILD. O conhecimento da enfermagem e a aplicação dessas recomendações podem melhorar o acompanhamento e o prognóstico de pacientes com AR com DPI.

Phytochelatins (PCs) are cysteine-rich small peptides, enzymatically synthesized from reduced glutathione (GSH) by cytosolic enzyme phytochelatin synthase (PCS). The open reading frame (ORF) of the phytochelatin synthase CaPCS2 gene from the microalgae Chlamydomonas acidophila was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli strain DH5α, to analyze its role in protection against various abiotic agents that cause cellular stress. The transformed E. coli strain showed increased tolerance to exposure to different heavy metals (HMs) and arsenic (As), as well as to acidic pH and exposure to UVB, salt, or perchlorate. In addition to metal detoxification activity, new functions have also been reported for PCS and PCs. According to the results obtained in this work, the heterologous expression of CaPCS2 in E. coli provides protection against oxidative stress produced by metals and exposure to different ROS-inducing agents. However, the function of this PCS is not related to HM bioaccumulation.

Trichoderma atroviride (Ascomycota, Sordariomycetes) is a well-known mycoparasite applied for protecting plants against fungal pathogens. Its mycoparasitic activity involves processes shared with plant and human pathogenic fungi such as the production of cell wall degrading enzymes and secondary metabolites and is tightly regulated by environmental cues. In eukaryotes, the conserved Target of Rapamycin (TOR) kinase serves as a central regulator of cellular growth in response to nutrient availability. Here we describe how alteration of the activity of TOR1, the single and essential TOR kinase of T. atroviride, by treatment with chemical TOR inhibitors or by genetic manipulation of selected TOR pathway components affected various cellular functions. Loss of TSC1 and TSC2, that are negative regulators of TOR complex 1 (TORC1) in mammalian cells, resulted in altered nitrogen source-dependent growth of T. atroviride, reduced mycoparasitic overgrowth and, in the case of Δtsc1, a diminished production of numerous secondary metabolites. Deletion of the gene encoding the GTPase RHE2, whose mammalian orthologue activates mTORC1, led to rapamycin hypersensitivity and altered secondary metabolism, but had an only minor effect on vegetative growth and mycoparasitic overgrowth. The latter also applied to mutants missing the npr1-1 gene that encodes a fungus-specific kinase known as TOR target in yeast. Genome-wide transcriptome analysis confirmed TOR1 as a regulatory hub that governs T. atroviride metabolism and processes associated to ribosome biogenesis, gene expression and translation. In addition, mycoparasitism-relevant genes encoding terpenoid and polyketide synthases, peptidases, glycoside hydrolases, small secreted cysteine-rich proteins, and G protein coupled receptors emerged as TOR1 targets. Our results provide the first in-depth insights into TOR signaling in a fungal mycoparasite and emphasize its importance in the regulation of processes that critically contribute to the antagonistic activity of T. atroviride.

Resumen En este trabajo realizamos una revisión exhaustiva de bases de datos de colecciones científicas y literatura especializada con el objetivo de actualizar la lista de los mamíferos menores no voladores (<1000 g aprox.) del departamento de Loreto. Como resultado se contabilizaron 536 localidades en la que se registran 75 especies, agrupadas en cuatro órdenes y seis familias, equivalente al 13% y 28.6% de la diversidad de mamíferos de Perú y Loreto, respectivamente. Además, cinco de las 83 especies de mamíferos endémicos a nivel nacional están presentes en Loreto: Akodon orophilus, Neusticomys peruviensis, Hadrosciurus "sp. 3", Marmosops (Marmosops) soinii y Monodelphis (Mygalodelphys) handleyi; siendo las tres últimas, especies con registros sólo en este departamento. Asimismo, 23 especies son consideradas especies raras y 12 comunes, dos están consideradas como Vulnerables y tres como datos insuficientes por la legislación peruana, y alrededor de 16 especies no han sido evaluadas por la International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Por otro lado, mientras que la diversidad de especies de mamíferos pequeños no voladores está comparativamente bien representada en las distintas provincias de Loreto, algunas como Putumayo es una de las menos exploradas (< 15 localidades) y registra solamente 10 especies. Además, se evidenciaron cinco zonas de vacíos de información, distribuidas principalmente en las zonas fronterizas con otros departamentos o países: 1) toda la provincia del Putumayo y noreste de Maynas, 2) sur del río Amazonas en la provincia de Mariscal Ramón Castilla, 3) norte de la provincia del Datem del Marañón, 4) suroccidente del Datem del Marañón y 5) al sur y occidente de la provincia de Ucayali; cuya extensión podría explicar por qué la diversidad de los mamíferos menores no voladores estaría subestimada en este departamento.


Abstract In this work, we conducted an exhaustive review of databases of scientific collections and specialized literature with the goal to update the list of the smaller non-volant mammals (<1000 g approx.) of the department of Loreto. Results show 536 localities where are including records of 75 species, grouped in four orders and six families, this represent to 13% and 28.6% of the mammal diversity of Peru and Loreto, respectively. In addition, five of the 83 endemic mammal species of Peru occur in Loreto: Akodon orophilus, Neusticomys peruviensis, Hadrosciurus "species 3", Marmosops (Marmosops) soinii and Monodelphis (Mygalodelphys) handleyi; the last three species are only recorded in this department. Likewise, 23 species are considered rare and 12 common. In addition, two are considered Vulnerable and three as Data Deficient by Peruvian legislation, and about 16 species have not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). On the other hand, while the species diversity of small non-volant mammals is comparatively well represented in the different provinces of Loreto, Putumayo province is the least explored with only 10 species. In addition, five large areas of information gaps were found, distributed mainly in the border areas: 1) the entire province of Putumayo and northeast of Maynas, 2) south of the Amazon River in the province of Mariscal Ramón Castilla, 3) north of the province of Datem del Marañón, 4) southwest of Datem del Marañón and 5) south and west of the province of Ucayali, which explain why the diversity of this group is largely underestimated in this department.

Resumen En este trabajo presentamos una lista actualizada de los murciélagos de Loreto basada en la revisión de bases de datos, colecciones científicas y literatura especializada. Encontramos que Loreto es el departamento con mayor diversidad de murciélagos del Perú, con 114 especies agrupadas en 7 familias (19.9% de la mastofauna peruana), y que incluyen dos de las nueve especies endémicas para Perú: Micronycteris (Micronycteris) matses y Hsunycteris dashe. Además, se encontraron 444 localidades diferentes con registros de especímenes, principalmente ubicadas a lo largo de ríos. Las especies registradas en cuatro o menos localidades únicas fueron consideradas como raras, mientras que las especies registradas en 111 o más localidades únicas fueron consideradas comunes. Presentamos un mapa de las ecorregiones de Loreto con las localidades únicas, tanto históricas como contemporáneas, además de un mapa de densidad de localidades por cada 25 km2 donde se identifican 6 zonas de vacíos de información: 1) norte y centro de Putumayo 2) noroeste de Maynas y noreste de Loreto, 3) centro de Maynas, 4) centro-norte del Datem del Marañón, norte de Alto Amazonas y extremo occidental de Loreto, 5) centro-sur de Requena y extremo oriental de Ucayali y 6) extremo occidental de Ucayali. Finalmente presentamos mapas de distribución para cada especie aquí reportada para Loreto.


Abstract In this work, an updated list of species of bats from Loreto is presented, this was elaborated using information of databases, zoological collections, and specialized literature. The results confirm Loreto as the most diverse department of Peru with 114 species of bats grouped into 7 families (19.9% of the Peruvian mastofauna), which include two of the nine endemic species to Peru: Micronycteris (Micronycteris) matses and Hsunycteris dashe. Additionally, 444 different locations were found with specimen records, located mainly along rivers. Species recorded in four or less different locations are considered rare, while species recorded in 111 or more different locations are considered common. We present a map of the Loreto ecoregions with the different localities, both historical and contemporary, as well as a map of density of locations per 25 km2, which identifies 6 areas of information gaps: 1) North and middle Putumayo, 2) Northwest Maynas and northeast Loreto, 3) Middle Maynas, 4) North-middle Datem del Marañón, north Alto Amazonas and western end of Loreto, 5) South-middle Requena and eastern end of Ucayali and 6) Western end of Ucayali. Finally we present distribution maps for each species reported here for Loreto.

Resumen En el presente trabajo, presentamos una lista actualizada de mamíferos mayores para Loreto compuesta por 72 especies en 8 órdenes y 25 familias. Esta lista fue elaborada a partir de la minuciosa revisión de bases de datos, colecciones zoológicas y publicaciones científicas. En Loreto se encuentran 5 especies endémicas nacionales: Lagothrix flavicauda, Saguinus (Leontocebus) illigeri, Saguinus (Leontocebus) nigrifrons, Pithecia aequatorialis y Pithecia isabela, siendo las tres últimas también endémicas para Loreto. Se encontraron 292 localidades diferentes a partir de 3286 registros de mamíferos mayores. Se presenta un mapa de distribución de las localidades analizadas remarcando ecorregiones y registros históricos (antes del 2001) y contemporáneos (después del 2001). Asimismo, se presentan mapas con la distribución de las localidades donde han sido registradas las 72 especies estudiadas, y un mapa de densidad de las localidades registradas, el cual permite identificar dos zonas con vacíos de información: 1) la zona Datem del Marañón-Loreto y 2) la zona Alto Amazonas-Ucayali. Estas zonas requieren evaluaciones urgentes para complementar el conocimiento de la biodiversidad de Loreto y sustentar adecuadamente los planes de conservación y desarrollo sustentable.


Abstract In this work, we present an updated list of large mammals for Loreto composed of 72 species in 8 orders and 25 families. This list is elaborated from review of databases, zoological collections, and scientific publications. In Loreto is registered five Peruvian endemic species: Lagothrix flavicauda, Saguinus (Leontocebus) illigeri, Saguinus (Leontocebus) nigrifrons, Pithecia aequatorialis and Pithecia isabela; the last three have presence only in Loreto. We found 292 different locations and 3286 records of large mammals and build a distribution map highlighting ecoregions and historical (before 2001) and contemporary (after 2001) records. Likewise, we build maps for each of the 72 species with records in Loreto, and a density map that reveal two areas with information gaps: 1) the Datem del Marañón-Loreto zone, and 2) the Alto Amazonas-Ucayali zone. These zones require urgent evaluations to complement knowledge of Loreto's biodiversity and adequately support conservation and sustainable development plans.

Resumen La lista de mamíferos del Perú más reciente, publicada en el año 2020, compiló un total de 569 especies y 82 especies endémicas, sin embargo, en corto tiempo varios cambios taxonómicos han ocurrido y obligan a presentar otra lista actualizada de todas las especies de mamíferos con registros en el Perú. Esta nueva lista actualizada hasta noviembre de 2021 incluye 573 especies, 223 géneros, 51 familias y 13 órdenes: Didelphimorphia (47), Paucituberculata (2), Sirenia (1), Cingulata (5), Pilosa (7), Primates (42), Lagomorpha (2), Eulipotyphla (3), Carnivora (33), Perissodactyla (2), Artiodactyla (46, incluyendo 32 cetáceos), Rodentia (194) y Chiroptera (189); de las cuales, 87 especies son endémicas para el país. Por otro lado, la necesidad de contar con listas taxonómicas válidas y actualizadas para el uso en toma de decisiones, nos lleva a proponer como una estrategia óptima que la Asociación de Mastozoólogos del Perú (AMP) asuma el rol de mantener actualizada una lista que cubra las necesidades de los diferentes usuarios, tal como organizaciones similares lo vienen haciendo en países vecinos con el apoyo del Estado y ONGs.


Abstract The most recent list of mammals in Peru, published in 2020, compiled a total of 569 species, including 82 endemic species. However, several taxonomic changes have occurred in this short time, and it makes necessary to publish an updated list of all mammalian species recorded in Peru. This new list is updated until November 2021 and includes 573 species, 223 genera, 51 families and 13 orders: Didelphimorphia (47), Paucituberculata (2), Sirenia (1), Cingulata (5), Pilosa (7), Primates (42), Lagomorpha (2), Eulipotyphla (3), Carnivora (33), Perissodactyla (2), Artiodactyla (46, including 32 cetaceans), Rodentia (194) and Chiroptera (189); of which 87 species are endemic to the country. On the other hand, the need to have valid and updated taxonomic lists for use in decision-making, leads us to propose as an optimal strategy that the Asociación de Mastozoólogos del Perú (AMP) assume the role to produce and maintain an updated list to satisfy the needs of different users, as similar organizations are doing in neighboring countries with the support of the State and NGOs.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is considered a multifaceted disease, with patients reporting low health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Data on disease burden are substantial and there exists a need for properly designed studies to learn more about the evolution of HRQoL in this condition. This study aims to identify factors associated to HRQoL evolution in PsA patients followed-up in a real-world setting in Spain. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective longitudinal observational study including incident patients from the rheumatology outpatient clinic of Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid, Spain), diagnosed for the first time of PsA, defined as having received any ICD9/ICD10 diagnosis code of PsA, from 2007 to 2016, and followed-up until loss of follow-up, death, or November 2017. The influence of demographic and clinical variables in baseline HRQoL [assessed with the Rosser Classification Index (RCI)] was analyzed using bivariable and multivariable generalized linear models. The influence of those variables and of treatment-related factors in repeated measures of HRQoL was analyzed using bivariable and multivariable generalized estimating equations (GEE) models nested by patient. RESULTS: Two hundred and thirty patients were included in the analysis, with 3384 registered visits. At baseline, older age, a previous diagnosis of obesity, and the presence of enthesitis were significantly associated with worse HRQoL. During follow-up, using an exchangeable working correlation structure, the presence of enthesitis was also associated with worse HRQoL, coefficient (95% CI) - 0.006 (- 0.01 to - 0.002), p = 1.00E-03; conversely, treatment with methotrexate or antimalarials was associated with better HRQoL with 0.007 (0.001-0.014), p = 0.020 and 0.003 (0.001-0.005), p = 3.00E-03, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Musculoskeletal manifestations and comorbidities exert a deleterious effect in HRQoL of PsA patients. Therefore, the optimal management of this condition needs to also address these manifestations in order to try to restore the QoL of these patients.

Background: Limited evidence exists comprehensively assessing physical fitness attributes, physical activity behaviors, nutritional habits, and nutritional knowledge according to sex in basketball players during early adolescence. Insight of this nature could be used to optimize the training process and lifestyles in young basketball players. Objective: To compare physical fitness attributes, physical activity levels, nutritional habits, and nutritional knowledge between elite male and female basketball players under 14 years of age (U-14). Methods: Twenty-three U-14 basketball players (male, n = 13 and female, n = 10) from the same elite basketball academy (Spanish Asociación de Clubes de Baloncesto [ACB] League) participated in this study. Physical fitness attributes were assessed using a basketball-specific test battery (countermovement jump, drop jump, linear sprint, Lane Agility Drill, 505 change-of-direction, and repeated-change-of-direction tests), while physical activity levels (Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents, PAQ-A), nutritional habits (Turconi questionnaire), and nutritional knowledge (Turconi questionnaire) were assessed using questionnaires. Results: Male players exhibited better physical fitness in all tests (p <0.001 to 0.036, effect size = -0.44 to -0.76, intermediate to strong) compared to female players. Male players also performed more physical activity in their leisure time (p = 0.036) than females. No significant differences in nutritional habits and nutritional knowledge were evident between sexes (p > 0.05). Of note, a high proportion of players declared never or only sometimes eating fruit (males: 23%; females: 40%) and vegetables (males: 46%; females: 70%). In addition, relatively poor nutritional knowledge was evident in all players with the group correctly answering <50% of nutritional questions overall (4.57 ± 1.88 out of 11 points, 42%) and according to sex (males: 4.07 ± 2.10, 37%; females: 5.20 ± 1.40, 47%). Conclusion: These findings emphasize the necessity to perform individualized prescription of training stimuli across sexes to optimize the physical preparedness and development of youth basketball players. Additionally, strategies such as nutrition-focused education interventions may be necessary in this population given the low consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as the poor nutritional knowledge observed in players.

Chronic inflammation of the large intestine is associated with an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC), the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Necroptosis has emerged as a form of lytic programmed cell death that, distinct from apoptosis, triggers an inflammatory response. Dysregulation of necroptosis has been linked to multiple chronic inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. Here, we used murine models of acute colitis, colitis-associated CRC, sporadic CRC, and spontaneous intestinal tumorigenesis to investigate the role of necroptosis in these gastrointestinal pathologies. In the Dextran Sodium Sulfate-induced acute colitis model, in some experiments, mice lacking the terminal necroptosis effector protein, MLKL, or its activator RIPK3, exhibited greater weight loss compared to wild-type mice, consistent with some earlier reports. However, the magnitude of weight loss and accompanying inflammatory pathology upon Mlkl deletion varied substantially between independent repeats. Such variation provides a possible explanation for conflicting literature reports. Furthermore, contrary to earlier reports, we observed that genetic deletion of MLKL had no impact on colon cancer development using several mouse models. Collectively, these data do not support an obligate role for necroptosis in inflammation or cancer within the gastrointestinal tract.

Considering nutrition education interventions have been frequently implemented in team sport athletes and have shown promising results, this study aimed to summarize the effects of nutrition education interventions on eating habits, nutrition knowledge, body composition, and physical performance in team sport athletes. A systematic review was conducted using the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus. A total of 14 studies met the inclusion criteria for the review. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated, and each study was assessed according to the analyzed variables (i.e., eating habits, nutrition knowledge, body composition, and physical performance). Most studies showed improvements in or maintenance of variables used to indicate eating habits, nutrition knowledge, and body composition. However, limited studies examined the effect of nutrition education interventions on physical performance, with existing studies demonstrating disparate results. These findings suggest implementation of nutrition education interventions in team sport athletes could be an effective strategy to improve their eating habits, nutrition knowledge, and body composition. Due to the heterogeneity across the included studies regarding sport modality, competition level, age, and sex of the athletes investigated, as well as the intervention type adopted (i.e., online or face-to-face), it is difficult to establish optimal nutrition education interventions for each analyzed variable.

Resumen Este trabajo presenta una síntesis actualizada del conocimiento de la diversidad y distribución de 11 órdenes de mamíferos del Perú. La información de especies es presentada a nivel de país, ecorregión y por primera vez por departamento. Además, identificamos las especies endémicas para el país y damos los rangos de elevación por especie. Para ello se realizó una revisión exhaustiva tanto de la literatura como de ejemplares en colecciones científicas, además de consultas con especialistas. Aquí, reportamos 191 especies pertenecientes a los órdenes Didelphimorphia (46 spp.), Paucituberculata (2), Sirenia (1), Cingulata (5), Pilosa (8), Primates (42), Lagomorpha (2), Eulipotyphla (3), Carnivora (33), Perissodactyla (2) y Artiodactyla (47, incluyendo 32 cetáceos), de los cuales 22 especies son endémicas para el país. Debido a su alta diversidad y al alto número de cambios taxonómicos los órdenes Chiroptera y Rodentia serán tratados separadamente en futuros artículos. Los registros de especies presentadas en este trabajo, aunado a los reportes recientes de murciélagos (189 especies) y roedores (189 especies) totalizan a una diversidad de 569 especies de mamíferos para el Perú. Finalmente, proporcionamos notas taxonómicas de las especies que presentan cambios con respecto a la anterior lista de mamíferos peruanos. Esperamos que este primer listado de mamíferos por departamentos incentive estudios más detallados de la diversidad peruana a nivel regional.


Abstract This work summarizes recent knowledge regarding the diversity and distribution of 11 Orders of mammals from Peru. Species information is presented for the country, ecoregions and, for the first time, by individual departments. Furthermore, we identified endemic species for the country and provided elevation ranges per species. To compile our information, we conducted an exhaustive review of the scientific literature and specimens in scientific collections, consulting with specialists when needed to verify records. We report 191 species belonging to the orders Didelphimorphia (46 spp.), Paucituberculata (2), Sirenia (1), Cingulata (5), Pilosa (8), Primates (42), Lagomorpha (2), Eulipotyphla (3), Carnivora (33), Perissodactyla (2), and Artiodactyla (47, including 32 cetaceans); 22 of these are endemic to Peru. Due to their high diversity and number of taxonomic changes, the Orders Chiroptera and Rodentia will be treated separately in future articles. The species records presented here, together with previous reports of bats (189 spp.) and rodents (189 spp.) yield a current total 569 species of mammals for Peru. Finally, we provide taxonomic notes for species that exhibit differences with respect to the previously published list of Peruvian mammals. We hope that this first list of mammals by department encourages further studies of Peruvian mammalian diversity at the regional level.

The cytotoxicity of cadmium (Cd), arsenate (As(V)), and arsenite (As(III)) on a strain of Chlamydomonas acidophila, isolated from the Rio Tinto, an acidic environment containing high metal(l)oid concentrations, was analyzed. We used a broad array of methods to produce complementary information: cell viability and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation measures, ultrastructural observations, transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (TEM-XEDS), and gene expression. This acidophilic microorganism was affected differently by the tested metal/metalloid: It showed high resistance to arsenic while Cd was the most toxic heavy metal, showing an LC50 = 1.94 µM. Arsenite was almost four-fold more toxic (LC50= 10.91 mM) than arsenate (LC50 = 41.63 mM). Assessment of ROS generation indicated that both arsenic oxidation states generate superoxide anions. Ultrastructural analysis of exposed cells revealed that stigma, chloroplast, nucleus, and mitochondria were the main toxicity targets. Intense vacuolization and accumulation of energy reserves (starch deposits and lipid droplets) were observed after treatments. Electron-dense intracellular nanoparticle-like formation appeared in two cellular locations: inside cytoplasmic vacuoles and entrapped into the capsule, around each cell. The chemical nature (Cd or As) of these intracellular deposits was confirmed by TEM-XEDS. Additionally, they also contained an unexpected high content in phosphorous, which might support an essential role of poly-phosphates in metal resistance.

OBJECTIVES: There are controversies regarding the long-term oncological safety of preservation of pelvic innervation during radical hysterectomy (RH). This study aimed to analyze the feasibility and safety of nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy (NSRH) for cervical cancer compared with non-NSRH following 17 years of experience in a tertiary cancer referral center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 1999 and June 2016, all patients who underwent RH for cervical cancer were followed-up prospectively. Comparison analyses regarding surgical outcomes, complications, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were performed between patients treated with NSRH and non-NSRH. RESULTS: A total of 188 patients were included (113 non-NSRH and 75 NSRH). The median follow-up was 112 months. Estimated blood loss and hospital stay were all significantly lower in the NSRH group. Overall intraoperative complication rate (p = 0.02) and need for transfusion (p = 0.016) were lower in the NSRH group. There were no differences in the median operation time, OS, DFS, CSS, or recurrence rates between the NSRH and non-NSRH group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides a wide perspective on the developments of nerve-sparing procedures for the management of women with early-stage cervical cancer. Our results suggest that NSRH is a feasible and safe procedure, with reduced morbidity outcomes.
