ABSTRACT Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, which is a simple surrogate marker of insulin resistance that is associated with various cardiometabolic diseases, in patients with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). Subjects and methods: A total of 30 patients with KS (mean age: 21.53 ± 1.66 years) and 32 healthy controls (mean age: 22.07 ± 1.01 years) were included in the study.The clinical and laboratory parameters,TyG index, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) level, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) score, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level were measured in patients with KS and healthy subjects. Results: Patients with KS had higher HOMA-IR score (p = 0.043), ADMA levels (p < 0.001), and TyG index (p = 0.031) and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (p < 0.001) than healthy subjects. TyG index was positively correlated with plasma ADMA (r = 0.48, p < 0.001) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.36, p = 0.011). Multivariate analyses showed that total testosterone level (β = −0.44, p = 0.001) and TyG index (β = 0.29, p = 0.045) were independent determinants of plasma ADMA levels. Conclusion: Patients with KS had higher TyG indices than healthy subjects. Moreover, TyG index was independently associated with endothelial dysfunction in patients. TyG index may be a practical and useful measure to show the increased endothelial dysfunction in patients with KS.

CONTEXT: The aims of the study are to compare characteristics of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) related to different etiologies, and to identify predictors of recurrence of SAT and incident hypothyroidism. METHODS: This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective cohort study included 53 endocrinology centers in Turkey. The study participants were divided into either COVID-19-related SAT (Cov-SAT), SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related SAT (Vac-SAT), or control SAT (Cont-SAT) groups. RESULTS: Of the 811 patients, 258 (31.8%) were included in the Vac-SAT group, 98 (12.1%) in the Cov-SAT group, and 455 (56.1%) in the Cont-SAT group. No difference was found between the groups with regard to laboratory and imaging findings. SAT etiology was not an independent predictor of recurrence or hypothyroidism. In the entire cohort, steroid therapy requirement and younger age were statistically significant predictors for SAT recurrence. C-reactive protein measured during SAT onset, female sex, absence of antithyroid peroxidase (TPO) positivity, and absence of steroid therapy were statistically significant predictors of incident (early) hypothyroidism, irrespective of SAT etiology. On the other hand, probable predictors of established hypothyroidism differed from that of incident hypothyroidism. CONCLUSION: Since there is no difference in terms of follow-up parameters and outcomes, COVID-19- and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related SAT can be treated and followed up like classic SATs. Recurrence was determined by younger age and steroid therapy requirement. Steroid therapy independently predicts incident hypothyroidism that may sometimes be transient in overall SAT and is also associated with a lower risk of established hypothyroidism.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most common cause of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Türkiye is among the countries with the highest rate of ASCVD. However, no population-based study has been published so far on the prevalence of FH, demographic and clinical characteristics, burden of ASCVD, treatment compliance, and attainment of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets. METHODS: We performed a study using the Turkish Ministry of Health's national electronic health records involving 83,063,515 citizens as of December 2021 dating back 2016. Adults fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of definite or probable FH according to the Dutch Lipid Network Criteria (DLNC), and children and adolescents fulfilling the criteria of probable FH according to the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) Consensus Panel report formed the study population (n = 157,790). The primary endpoint was the prevalence of FH. RESULTS: Probable or definite FH was detected in 0.63% (1 in 158) of the adults and 0.61% (1 in 164) of the total population. The proportion of adults with LDL-C levels >4.9 mmol/L (190 mg/dL) was 4.56% (1 in 22). The prevalence of FH among children and adolescents was 0.37% (1 in 270). Less than one-third of the children and adolescents, and two-thirds of young adults (aged 18-29) with FH were already diagnosed with dyslipidaemia. The proportion of adults and children and adolescents on lipid-lowering treatment (LLT) was 32.1% and 1.5%, respectively. The overall discontinuation rate of LLT was 65.8% among adults and 77.9% among children and adolescents. Almost no subjects on LLT were found to attain the target LDL-C levels. CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide study showed a very high prevalence of FH in Türkiye. Patients with FH are diagnosed late and treated sub-optimally. Whether these findings may explain the high rates of premature ASCVD in Türkiye needs further investigation. These results denote the urgent need for country-wide initiatives for early diagnosis and effective management of FH patients.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to investigate the frequency of sexual dysfunction and the effect of short-term testosterone replacement therapy on sexual functions in congenital hypogonadism patients. Furthermore, we sought to reveal the consistency of the self-report scales used for the diagnosis of sexual dysfunction and the relationship between biochemical parameters. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 47 young male patients aged above 18 years who were diagnosed with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Short (IIEF-5) and long (IIEF-15) forms of the International Index of Erectile Function and Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) were applied before treatment under the supervision of a physician. The patients' blood pressure, height, and weight were measured, and their luteinizing hormone (LH), FSH, and total testosterone levels were recorded. Patients who started their treatments were called for a follow-up checkup after 6 months. Their blood pressure, height, and weight were measured by reapplying the ASEX, IIEF-5, and IIEF-15. In addition, their LH, FSH, and total testosterone levels in the biochemical tests were rerecorded. Results: In this study, the sexual dysfunction status of patients diagnosed with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism before and after treatment was evaluated using the ASEX, IIEF-15, and IIEF-5 scales. A decrease in sexual dysfunction was observed in all three scales after treatment compared with that before treatment. The IIEF-5 and IIEF-15 scales were found to be uncorrelated in terms of the pretreatment values but were correlated in terms of the post-treatment values. Although a correlation was observed between ASEX and IIEF-5 before treatment, no correlation was detected between ASEX and IIEF-15. After the treatment, ASEX was found to be correlated with both IIEF-5 and IIEF-15. The results of the scales indicated the correlation in all categories, except the pretreatment results of the IIEF-15 scale. Conclusion: The results of the current study demonstrated a significant improvement in the sexual function of hypogonadism patients undergoing short-term testosterone therapy. The ASEX, IIEF-5, and IIEF-15 scales used in the diagnosis and follow-up of sexual dysfunction were useful for evaluating sexual functions in hypogonadotropic hypogonadism patients.

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that patients with chronic metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, are adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, when the subject is rare metabolic diseases, there are not enough data in the literature. AIM: To investigate the course of COVID-19 among patients with Gaucher disease (GD), the most common lysosomal storage disease. METHODS: Based on the National Health System data, a retrospective cohort of patients with confirmed (polymerase chain reactionpositive) COVID-19 infection (n = 149 618) was investigated. The adverse outcomes between patients with GD (n = 39) and those without GD (n = 149 579) were compared with crude and propensity score-matched (PSM) groups. The outcomes were hospitalisation, the composite of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and/or mechanical ventilation and mortality. RESULTS: The patients with GD were significantly older and had a higher frequency of hypertension (HT), Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), dyslipidaemia, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, heart failure and cancer. Although hospitalisation rates in Gaucher patients were found to be higher in crude analyses, the PSM models (model 1, age and gender matched; model 2, matched for age, gender, HT, T2DM and cancer) revealed no difference for the outcomes between patients with GD and the general population. According to multivariate regression analyses, having a diagnosis of GD was not a significant predictor for hospitalisation (P = 0.241), ICU admission/mechanical ventilation (P = 0.403) or mortality (P = 0.231). CONCLUSION: According to our national data, SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with GD does not have a more severe course than the normal population.

BACKGROUND: There are scarce published data in differentiated thyroid cancer patients about new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease outcomes and mortality. Here, we evaluated COVID-19 infection outcomes and mortality in thyroid cancer patients with COVID-19 infection. DESIGN AND METHODS: We included a cohort of patients with thyroid cancer with PCR-confirmed COVID-19 disease from 11 March to 30 May 2020 from the Turkish Ministry of Health database in our nationwide, retrospective study. We compared the mortality and morbidity of COVID patients with or without thyroid cancer. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess the independent factors for mortality, length of hospital stay and intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mechanical ventilation. We also analysed the effect of radioiodine treatment on severity and death rate of COVID-19 disease. RESULTS: We evaluated 388 COVID-19 patients with thyroid cancer [median age: 54 years, interquartile range (IQR) 18 years, males: 23%] and age and gender-matched 388 COVID-19 patients without thyroid cancer. Patients with thyroid cancer had a similar mortality ratio compared with the non-cancer group. Among patients with thyroid cancer, age, presence of diabetes mellitus, asthma/COPD, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, prior coronary artery disease, RAS blocker usage and low lymphocyte count were associated with mortality. Radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment and cumulative radioactive iodine dosage did not negatively affect the severity and mortality of COVID-19 disease in our patient group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that history of thyroid cancer did not have an increased risk of mortality or morbidity in COVID-19 disease. Besides, RAI therapy history and doses of radioactive iodine did not affect mortality or outcome.

BACKGROUND: The present survey aimed to find out the demographical and clinical characteristics of patients with hypertension in a population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Turkey. METHODS: Patients with T2DM who were followed-up in tertiary endocrine units for at least last one year were recruited. Demographic, clinical and biochemical data of the patients were collected. Hypertension was defined as taking anti-hypertensive medications or having office arterial blood pressure (ABP) ≥140/90 mmHg or home ABP ≥ 130/80 mmHg. RESULTS: A total of 4756 (58.9% women) diabetic patients were evaluated. The percentage of patients with hypertension was 67.5% (n = 3212). Although 87.4% (n = 2808) of hypertensive patients were under treatment, blood pressure was on target in 52.7% (n = 1479) of patients. Hypertension proportions were higher in woman (p = 0.001), older, more obese, and those who had longer diabetes duration, lower education levels, higher frequency of hypoglycemic events (all p < 0.001) and higher triglyceride levels (p = 0.003). LDL cholesterol level and the percentage of smokers were lower in hypertensive group than in non-hypertensive group (both p < 0.001). The percentage of macro and microvascular complications was higher in the hypertensive group than in the normotensive one (both p < 0.001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, being a woman (OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.04-1.51, p = 0.016), smoking (OR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.05-1.80, p = 0.020), regular physical activity (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.01-1.53, p = 0.039) and the presence of macrovascular complications (OR: 1.38 95% CI: 1.15-1.65, p = 0.001) were the significant predictors of good ABP regulation. The ratios of masked and white coat hypertension were 41.2% and 5.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that two-thirds (67.5%) of adult patients with T2DM have hypertension. Co-existence of hypertension increases the frequency of macro and microvascular diabetic complications in these patients. Despite the critical role of hypertension in morbidity and mortality, only half of the patients have favorable ABP levels. Masked hypertension seems to be another important issue in this population.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is the main obstacle for metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Turkey has the highest prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Europe. The effect of obesity on the metabolic control, and the macro- and microvascular complications of patients are not apparent. OBJECTIVES: This nationwide survey aimed to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among patients with type 2 diabetes and to search for the impact of obesity on the metabolic control of these patients. We also investigated the independent associates of obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled patients who were under follow-up for at least 1 year in 69 tertiary healthcare units in 37 cities. The demographic, anthropometric, and clinical data including medications were recorded. Patients were excluded if they were pregnant, younger than 18 years, had decompensated liver disease, psychiatric disorders interfering with cognition or compliance, had bariatric surgery, or were undergoing renal replacement therapy. RESULTS: Only 10% of patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 4,648) had normal body mass indexes (BMI), while the others were affected by overweight (31%) or obesity (59%). Women had a significantly higher prevalence of obesity (53.4 vs. 40%) and severe obesity (16.6 vs. 3.3%). Significant associations were present between high BMI levels and lower education levels, intake of insulin, antihypertensives and statins, poor metabolic control, or the presence of microvascular complications. Age, gender, level of education, smoking, and physical inactivity were the independent associates of obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSION: The TEMD Obesity Study shows that obesity is a major determinant of the poor metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. These results underline the importance of prevention and management of obesity to improve health care in patients with type 2 diabetes. Also, the results point out the independent sociodemographic and clinical associates of obesity, which should be the prior targets to overcome, in the national fight with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Parathyroid scintigraphy (PS) can be negative or equivocal (N/E) in a considerable number of cases with highly suspicious clinical findings and biochemical results for parathyroid adenoma (PA). The aims of this study were to investigate the complementary role of parathormone washout test (PWT) to PS in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and evaluate histopathologic aspects of PAs in comparison with PS results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with PHPT referred for PS were included in the study. Seventeen patients had both scintigraphic and ultrasonographic findings concordant with PA (Group A). Twenty-one patients having N/E PS, but suspected lesions for PA on ultrasonography (US) formed Group B. PWT was performed for all patients and they underwent the surgical intervention. An adenoma was removed in all patients and the histopathologic cell characteristics were established. RESULTS: The tumor size on US was larger in those patients whose adenomas were seen on the PS (P<.001). The percentages of chief (or principal), oxyphilic and clear cells in PAs were not statistically different between the groups. Serum parathormone level and PWT were not statistically significant between Group A and Group B (P=.095 and P=.04, respectively). CONCLUSION: Although there is not a definitive threshold value, the sensitivity of PS increases with lesion size. While chief cell and oxyphilic cell content of PAs tend to deplete in N/E PS, clear cell rate increases substantially. Combining PS with both US and PWT increases the sensitivity of detection and localization of PAs.

OBJECTIVE: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a life-threatening genetic disease associated with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and premature coronary heart disease that is undiagnosed and undertreated around the world. This study aimed to examine the demographic characteristics, awareness, and treatment adherence of undiagnosed or undertreated FH patients based on laboratory records. METHODS: In a 16-month retrospective survey using laboratory records, patients with elevated LDL-C (>250 mg/dL) were identified (n=395). Patients younger than 18 years of age or with secondary causes of dyslipidemia were excluded (n=98). In all, 297 patients were called and asked to participate in a phone interview regarding their demographic characteristics, awareness of dyslipidemia, and treatment adherence. RESULTS: A total of 147 patients (mean age: 51.7±16.6 years; 59.2% female) completed the interview. The mean LDL-C level of the patients was 292.8±49.9 mg/dL. According to the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, 18.4% of the patients had definite FH, 66.0% had probable FH, and 15.6% had possible FH. Although the majority of the patients (93.9%) were aware of their high LDL-C level, only about half of them (n=75; 51.0%) were in treatment. Of all the patients who were interviewed, 21% (n=31) had never taken medication to lower their LDL-C, and 28% (n=41) had stopped taking a lipid-lowering drug. CONCLUSION: This pilot study revealed that a significant number of FH patients were not taking statins despite having a very high LDL-C level. Nationwide detection of likely FH patients using hospital records and interviewing them via a phone survey may help to better understand and manage these high-risk patients.

ABSTRACT Background Cardiometabolic risk is high in patients with hypogonadism. Visceral adiposity index (VAI) and triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio are the practical markers of atherosclerosis and insulin resistance and independent predictors of cardiaovascular risk. To date, no study has evaluated VAI levels and TG/HDL-C ratio in hypogonadism. Subjects and methods A total of 112 patients with congenital hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (CHH) (mean age, 21.7 ± 2.06 years) and 124 healthy subjects (mean age, 21.5 ± 1.27 years) were enrolled. The demographic parameters, VAI, TG/HDL-C ratio, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels were measured for all participants. Results The patients had higher total cholesterol (p = 0.04), waist circumference, triglycerides, insulin, and HOMA-IR levels (p = 0.001 for all) than the healthy subjects. VAI and ADMA and TG/HDL-C levels were also higher in patients than in healthy subjects (p < 0.001 for all). VAI was weakly correlated with ADMA (r = 0.27, p = 0.015), HOMA-IR (r = 0.22, p = 0.006), hs-CRP (r = 0.19, p = 0.04), and total testosterone (r = −0.21, p = 0.009) levels, whereas TG/HDL-C ratio was weakly correlated weakly with ADMA (r = 0.30, p = 0.003), HOMA-IR (r = 0.22, p = 0.006), and total testosterone (r = −0.16, p = 0.03) levels. Neither VAI nor TG/HDL-C ratio determined ADMA, HOMA-IR, and hs-CRP levels. Conclusions The results of this study demonstrate that patients with hypogonadism have elevated VAI and TG/HDL-C ratio. These values are significantly correlated with the surrogate markers of endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, the predictive roles of VAI and TG/HDL-C ratio are not significant. Prospective follow-up studies are warranted to clarify the role of VAI and TG/HDL-C ratio in predicting cardiometabolic risk in patients with hypogonadism.

Background: Intensive insulin treatment is bothersome in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. High insulin dosages further increase weight gain and the risk of hypoglycemia. Glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists decrease the insulin need, cause weight loss and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. There is limited data about the effect of exenatide on obese diabetics under intensive insulin regimens. Methods: This retrospective case series report the clinical outcomes of 23 obese (13 morbidly obese) patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (Age=59±10.44 years, body mass index 41.1±6.8 kg/m2, HbA1c 9.9±1.5%), under high dose (94.1±39.6 unit) intensive insulin. Exenatide twice daily was added for a mean follow-up period of 11.22±7.01 (3-30) months. Intensive insulin regimens were continued in 7 patients while the others were switched to basal insulin during the follow-up. Results: During the follow-up, mean HbA1c levels of the patients significantly improved (p=0.019), along with the significant decrease in body mass index and the total insulin need (p<0.001 for both). Baseline insulin dosages were significantly higher in the intensive regimen group (p=0.013) while other demographical and clinical characteristics were similar. No significant difference was present between the groups regarding the alterations of HbA1c, body mass index and the reduction in total insulin dosages. Conclusion: Add on exenatide appears to be a rational treatment modality in uncontrolled obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus despite intensive insulin regimens. Further prospective randomized studies with longer follow-up periods are recommended.

OBJECTIVE: In nearly 20%-30% of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) relapse and 7% of them die during the next 10 years after initial diagnosis. In 10%-30% of patients with DTC after ablation therapy during the follow-up show a negative iodine-131 (131I) whole-body screening test (131I WBS) and increased serum thyroglobulin (Tg) level. Loss of ability of DTC metastatic lesions to trap 131I is associated with pure survival and often aggressive disease. Several studies have shown that in DTC cases non trapping 131I, fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) can detect recurrence or metastases with high sensitivity (80%-90%). The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features and other related risk factors of patients with DTC having elevated Tg levels and negative 131I WBS in which recurrence was detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT. We tried to study and stratify patients in this grey zone who could benefit from 18F-FDG PET/CT for the detection of metastases/recurrence according to predefined risk factors not investigated by other researchers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We studied retrospectively 165 DTC patients with elevated Tg levels and a negative 131I WBS during their follow-up between 2004-2015. Metastases/recurrence was found in 49% of the patients on restaging with 18F-FDG PET/CT and were compared with nonmetastatic group according to predefined risk factors. These factors were also evaluated in true positive and false negative cases. RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of 18F-FDG PET/CT for detecting recurrent/metastatic disease were 90% and 98.5%, respectively. No apparent predefined risk factor impacting a false negative 18F-FDG PET/CT was found. Findings in follicular carcinoma, Hürtle cell carcinoma and papillary carcinoma were not different from positive PET findings. The variants of papillary carcinoma also had no statistically difference with regard to 18F-FDG results. CONCLUSION: The most important factors affecting a true positive 18F-FDG PET/CT study were: ETE, high total 131I dose and the SUVmax values over 4.5.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), one of the most common forms of chronic liver disease, is closely associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Recent studies suggest that apelin, a newly described adipokine, is associated with hyperinsulinemia and inflammation. The aim of the study was to investigate plasma apelin concentrations in biopsy-proven NAFLD patients who had no metabolic confounders and also to search for the association of apelin with adiponectin, body mass index (BMI), and insulin sensitivity. Fifty male patients with NAFLD and 30 healthy male controls were enrolled. Apelin was measured along with BMI, lipids, glucose, insulin, adiponectin, and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) of insulin resistance indexes. Plasma apelin levels were significantly higher and adiponectin levels were lower in NAFLD patients when compared with the controls (P < .001 and P = .013, respectively). In multivariate analysis adjusted for BMI and HOMA indexes, the differences in apelin and adiponectin disappeared in the 2 groups (P = .3 and P = .1, respectively). In addition, apelin levels were positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.29, P = .05) and HOMA indexes (r = 0.4, P = .008) in subjects with NAFLD. The results of this preliminary study suggest that plasma apelin levels are not altered in nondiabetic and normotensive male subjects with NAFLD.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to research whether the levels of soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) and soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L), markers of endothelial function, are altered in subjects with NAFLD having no confounding factors for atherosclerosis. sCD40L, sP-selectin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) indexes were measured in 50 NAFLD subjects and 30 healthy controls. sCD40L, sP-selectin, and hsCRP levels were not significantly different between two groups (P = 0.48, 0.51, and 0.34, respectively). Body mass index, waist circumference, and insulin levels and HOMA indexes were significantly higher in subjects with NAFLD (all P < 0.001). The present data show that sCD40L and sP-selectin may not contribute to the accelerated atherogenesis associated with this clinically relevant condition.

PURPOSE: Hemoglobin (Hb) regulates the endothelial function by modulating the bio-availability of NO at the tissue level. A significant direct relationship is present between the Hb levels and endothelial functions in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Testing whether this association also exists in subjects with prediabetes is important because prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Therefore, we investigated the association of Hb both with the classical cardiac risk factors and the markers for endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). METHODS: We enrolled 69 normotensive, and cardiovascular events free subjects with IGT (M=40, age=45.50+/-6.8 yr). Plasma insulin, hsCRP, soluble CD40L, vonWillebrand factor, p-selectin levels were measured. The parameters given according to the higher and lower median Hb values of the subjects were compared. RESULTS: Subjects with the higher Hb levels exhibited lower HDL-C (46.68+/-10.8 mg/dl vs 51.5+/-8.9 mg/dl; P=0.04) and higher systolic (122.57+/-6.2 mmHg vs 116.17+/-7.4 mmHg; p < 0.001) and diastolic (79.14+/-3.73 mmHg vs 75.58+/-6.1 mmHg; P=0.005) blood pressures and sCD40L (7.9+/-3.8 ng/ml vs 6.07+/-2.1 ng/ml; P=0.02) levels. Hb levels were correlated to the HDL cholesterol, sCD40L, systolic and diastolic blood pressures and waist circumference (r=-0.28, P=0.02; r=0.29, P=0.02; r=0.53, P < 0.001; r=0.41, P=0.001; r=0.42, P < 0.001 respectively). According to the multiple logistic regression analysis, Hb was the determinant of sCD40L levels (beta=0.437, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: These results indicate that there may be a link with higher Hb values and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with IGT. Further investigation is warranted to understand the clinical implications of these findings in subjects with prediabetes.
