RESUMEN

In the semiconductor manufacturing process, when conducting inductively coupled plasma-reactive ion etching in challenging environments, both wafers and the ceramic components comprising the chamber's interior can be influenced by plasma attack. When ceramic components are exposed to long-term plasma environments, the eroded components must be replaced. Furthermore, non-volatile reactants can form and settle on semiconductor chips, acting as contaminants and reducing semiconductor production yield. Therefore, for semiconductor processing equipment parts to be utilized, it is necessary that they exhibit minimized generation of contaminant particles and not deviate significantly from the composition of conventionally used Al2O3 and Y2O3; part must also last long in various physicochemical etching environment. Herein, we investigate the plasma etching behavior of Y2O3-Y4Al2O9 (YAM) composites with a variety of mixing ratios under different gas fraction conditions. The investigation revealed that the etching rates and changes in surface roughness for these materials were significantly less than those of Y2O3 materials subjected to both chemical and physical etching. Microstructure analysis was conducted to demonstrate the minimization of crater formation. Mechanical properties of the composite were also analyzed. The results show that the composite can be commercialized as next-generation ceramic component in semiconductor processing equipment applications.

RESUMEN

While the effectiveness of suture-tape augmentation for chronic ankle instability has been supported biomechanically and clinically, little information is available regarding biological changes of the lateral ligaments postoperatively. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate ligament regeneration with MRI after suture-tape augmentation. Forty-six patients underwent MRI scan at follow-up of a minimum of 1 year after lateral ligaments augmentation using suture-tape. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and width of anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) were measured on preoperative and postoperative MRI by 3 researchers. The degree of biological healing of ATFL was analyzed based on the change of SNR and comparison with normal contralateral ankle. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score, Foot and Ankle Ability Measure. Mean Foot and Ankle Outcome Score and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure scores improved significantly from 63.1 to 92.7, and 59.6 to 91.5 points at final follow-up, respectively (p < .001). Mean SNR and width of ATFL were changed insignificantly from 8.24 to 7.96, and 1.88 mm to 2.05 mm at final follow-up, respectively (p = .391, .509). As compared to contralateral side, there were significant differences in both mean SNR and width of the ATFL, respectively (p < .001, p = .0012). Spearman's correlation analysis revealed no significant association between clinical outcomes and degree of biological healing of ATFL based on MRI. Despite significant improvement in patient-reported clinical outcomes, the influence on ligament regeneration of suture-tape augmentation for chronic ankle instability was insignificant. In addition, there was no significant correlation between clinical outcomes and degree of biological healing of the ATFL.

RESUMEN

Residual functional ankle instability regardless of the restoration of mechanical stability after the lateral ligament repair or reconstruction can cause recurrent sprain. The purpose of this study was to identify the sequential changes of joint-position sense, peroneal strength, postural control, and functional performance ability after the modified Broström procedure (MBP) for chronic ankle instability. A total of 46 patients (46 ankles) underwent the MBP for chronic ankle instability were eligible for this study and were followed for 1 year postoperatively. The changes of joint-position sense and peroneal strength were periodically evaluated with an isokinetic dynamometer. Postural control ability was evaluated using a one-leg stance test with eyes closed. The functional performance ability examination comprised a one-leg hop test, a 6-meter hop test, and a cross 3-meter hop test. The error in joint-position sense significantly improved from a mean 4.3º to 2.8º (p < .001). Peak torque for eversion significantly improved from a mean 18.2 Nm to 21.2 Nm (p = .024). Balance retention time significantly improved from a mean 4.7 seconds to 6.4 seconds (p < .001). Among the functional performance tests, only the one-leg hop test showed a significant improvement postoperatively (p = .031). At 1 year postoperatively, the recovery ratios compared to the unaffected ankle were 67.9% in joint-position sense (p < .001), 86.9% in peroneal strength (p = .012), and 74.4% in postural control (p < .001) with significant side-to-side differences. Although joint-position sense, peroneal strength, postural control, and functional performance ability were significantly improved after the MBP, recovery ratios compared to the unaffected ankle were insufficient up to 1 year postoperatively.

RESUMEN

Patterning of silver nanowires (AgNWs) used in fabricating flexible and transparent electrodes (FTEs) is essential for constructing a variety of optoelectronic devices. However, patterning AgNW electrodes using a simple, inexpensive, high-resolution, designable, and scalable process remains a challenge. Therefore, herein a novel solvent-free photolithographic technique using a UV-curable pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) film for patterning AgNWs is introduced. The UV-curable PSA film can be selectively patterned by photopolymerization under UV exposure through a photomask. The AgNWs embedded in the non-photocured adhesive areas of the film are firmly held by a crosslinked network of photocurable resin when the patterned film is attached to the AgNW-coated substrate and additionally irradiated by UV light. After peeling off the film, the positive pattern of AgNW electrodes remains on the substrate, while the negative pattern is transferred to the film. This solvent-free photolithographic technique, which does not use toxic solvents, provides superior pattern features, such as fine line widths and spacings, sharp line edges, and low roughness. Therefore, the developed technique could be successfully applied in the development of flexible and transparent optoelectronic devices, such as a self-cleaning electro-wetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices, transparent heaters, and FTEs.

RESUMEN

Herein, printable polymer series containing different portions of cinnamate and perfluorinated phenyl functionalities, namely, polyperfluorostyrene-co-poly(vinylbenzyl cinnamates) (PFS-co-PVBCi (x:y)) copolymers, were synthesized and applied as gate dielectrics for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The polymeric dielectrics were successfully printed via electrostatic force-assisted dispensing mode of electrohydrodynamic jet printing. The dielectric characteristics of the printed polymers, such as surface energy, dielectric constant, leakage current, atomic depth profiles, and deposited semiconducting layer characteristics, were clearly identified. In particular, the difference in driving stability of OTFTs according to the type of polymer was analyzed in detail and a possible mechanism was proposed. Results suggested that PFS-co-PVBCi (3:7) led to optimized consequences, yielding an almost negligible Vth shift under continuous bias stress. Through this, we successfully implemented flexible OTFT and logic devices using printed PFS-co-PVBCi (3:7) dielectrics with stable operation properties. Therefore, we believe that this study will facilitate the printing and synthesis of polymer dielectrics to produce printed and flexible OTFTs.

RESUMEN

Steel sandwich sheets (steel-polymer-steel), which are composed of lightweight polymers bonded on both sides with rigid steel sheets, have recently been developed as functional lightweight materials. In this study, a steel sandwich sheet (electrogalvanized (EG) steel sheet-polypropylene (PP)-EG steel sheet) with improved normal adhesion is fabricated without adhesives. Instead, adhesion is achieved via mechanical interlocking between the etched EG steel sheets and PP. Hierarchical structures were formed on the EG steel sheet surface by electrochemical etching to attain effective mechanical interlocking for improving normal adhesion without any adhesives. In the case of the EG steel sheet etched at 6 V for 7 s, a high fraction (∼35%) of holes (size: <1 µm2) with nanoscale scalloped structures was formed on the EG steel sheet surface. The normal adhesion test result of the fabricated steel sandwich sheet showed that the adhesion strength increased from virtually 0 (bare) to 559.6 kPa as a result of mechanical interlocking. The results of the focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry analyses confirmed the cohesive failure of PP resulting from the successful mechanical interlocking of PP with the holes formed on the etched EG steel sheet. To examine the effect of hierarchical structures on the normal adhesion of the steel sandwich sheet, finite element analysis was implemented.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Although there is enthusiasm for identifying and treating psychosocial problems in childhood cancer patients, there are few validated instruments to help providers identify at-risk children for further assessment. The study objective was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the self-report pediatric Distress Thermometer Rating Scale (Peds DTRS) in childhood cancer survivors and identify a threshold score to help providers classify pediatric patients. METHODS: We evaluated 54 children 7-17 years old using 178 Peds DTRS longitudinal data points from the cohort that was used for the original pediatric adaptation of the DTRS. We compared Peds DTRS scores against two established standardized measures using a generalized linear mixed model to deal with the dependency in the longitudinal data to estimate ROC curves and related statistics. RESULTS: Results indicate that a score of 3 is a reasonable cutoff to identify distress with children 7-17 years old. This cutoff yielded high sensitivity (87.0%) and specificity (79.7%) using the PedsQL Emotional Domain score as the standard. Similar results were obtained using the CDI as the standard, but we are cautious as very few CDI scores reached the cutoff criterion. Exploratory analysis highlighted clinical factors that correlate with increased distress measured using the Peds DTRS. CONCLUSIONS: The Peds DTRS is a very brief, convenient, and rapid screening tool for global distress in children. Further investigation of the Peds DTRS and other tools can improve the ability of providers to prevent and treat the negative emotional consequences of cancer and improve the quality of survivorship.

RESUMEN

Numerous surgical options have been introduced for the treatment of chronic refractory lateral epicondylitis of the elbow, but it remains unclear which option is superior. The clinical outcomes of an open surgery group and an arthroscopic surgery group were evaluated, and the results of the 2 procedures were compared. From among patients with lateral epicondylitis refractory to 6 months of conservative treatment, 68 patients satisfying study criteria were recruited. Open surgery was performed in 34 cases (group 1), and arthroscopic surgery was performed in 34 cases (group 2). Compared with preoperatively, the 2 groups had significantly improved values for grip strength, range of motion, and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score at 12 months postoperatively. Group 1 had significantly greater improvements in grip strength and visual analog scale pain score compared with group 2 (P=.048 vs P=.006). Group 2 had significantly greater (P=.045) improvement in pronation compared with group 1. Group 2 returned to work sooner than group 1. On the questionnaire regarding satisfaction with surgery 24 months postoperatively, 4 patients (12%) in group 2 reported dissatisfaction compared with no patients in group 1. Open surgery and arthroscopic surgery both yielded good clinical results. Nonetheless, for patients requiring muscle strength or having severe pain at work, open surgery would be more effective.
