RESUMEN

In order to fully understand the carbon emission from different fuels in rural villages of China, especially in the typical atmospheric pollution areas. The characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols and carbon dioxide (CO2) with its stable carbon isotope (δ13C) were investigated in six households, which two households used coal, two households used wood as well as two households used biogas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), from two rural villages in Fenwei Plain from March to April 2021. It showed that the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emitted from biogas and LPG couldn't be as lower as expected in this area. However, the clean fuels could relatively reduce the emissions of organic carbon (OC) and element carbon (EC) in PM2.5 compare to the solid fuels. The pyrolyzed carbon (OP) accounted more total carbon (TC) in coal than the other fuels use households, indicating that more water-soluble OC existed, and it still had the highest secondary organic carbon (SOC) than the other fuels. Meantime, the coal combustions in the two villages had the highest CO2 concentration of 527.6 ppm and 1120.6 ppm, respectively, while the clean fuels could effectively reduce it. The average δ13C values (-26.9‰) was much lighter than almost all the outdoor monitoring and similar to the δ13C values for coal combustion and vehicle emission, showing that they might be the main contributors of the regional atmospheric aerosol in this area. During the sandstorm, the indoor PM2.5 mass and CO2 were increasing obviously. The indoor cancer risk of PAHs for adults and children were greater than 1 × 10-6, exert a potential carcinogenic risk to human of solid fuels combustion in rural northern China. It is important to continue concern the solid fuel combustion and its health impact in rural areas.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common metabolic disease of the liver, characterized by hepatic steatosis in more than 5% of hepatocytes. However, despite the recent approval of the first drug, resmetirom, for the management of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, decades of target exploration and hundreds of clinical trials have failed, highlighting the urgent need to find new druggable targets for the discovery of innovative drug candidates against MASLD. Here, we found that glutathione S-transferase alpha 1 (GSTA1) expression was negatively associated with lipid droplet accumulation in vitro and in vivo. Overexpression of GSTA1 significantly attenuated oleic acid-induced steatosis in hepatocytes or high-fat diet-induced steatosis in the mouse liver. The hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory drug bicyclol also attenuated steatosis by upregulating GSTA1 expression. A detailed mechanism showed that GSTA1 directly interacts with fatty acid binding protein 1 (FABP1) and facilitates the degradation of FABP1, thereby inhibiting intracellular triglyceride synthesis by impeding the uptake and transportation of free fatty acids. Conclusion: GSTA1 may be a good target for the discovery of innovative drug candidates as GSTA1 stabilizers or enhancers against MASLD.

Background: One of the widespread manifestations of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) of the brain parenchyma is white matter lesion, which appears as white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Previous studies have illustrated that large artery atherosclerosis is related to CSVD, but the precise progress of pathogenesis remains unknown. High-resolution MRI (HR-MRI) has the ability to delineate intracranial vascular walls, enabling a thorough exploration of the structure and composition of unstable plaques. This study aimed to apply HR-MRI to characterize the wall changes and plaque characteristics of middle cerebral arteries in patients with WMHs and to investigate the correlation between plaque vulnerability parameters and different degrees of WMHs. Methods: In this study, 138 patients with acute ischemic stroke at Harbin Medical University's First Clinical Hospital (May 2021 to October 2023) were cross-sectionally reviewed and underwent conventional brain and HR-MRI using T1-weighted 3D volumetric isotropic turbo spin echo acquisition (T1W-3D-VISTA) of the unilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA). According to Fazekas grade (0-6), the patients were divided into two groups: Fazekas score 0-2, no-or-mild WMHs; and Fazekas 3-6, moderate-to-severe WMHs. The intraplaque hemorrhage, plaque distribution, plaque enhancement, plaque load, remodeling pattern, and stenosis of the two groups were measured. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between vulnerable plaques and WMHs. Results: Of the participants who were initially considered for inclusion, 71 were deemed eligible, among whom 34 were placed in the no-or-mild WMH group and 37 in the moderate-to-severe WMH group. Between the two groups, there were significant differences in intraplaque hemorrhage (P=0.01), a wide distribution (P=0.02), and plaque enhancement (P=0.02). Univariate analysis showed that WMHs were associated with age [odds ratio (OR) =1.080; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.020-1.144; P=0.008], hypertension (OR =3.500; 95% CI: 1.276-9.597; P=0.01), intraplaque hemorrhage (OR =3.955; 95% CI: 1.247-12.538; P=0.02), a wide distribution (OR =3.067; 95% CI: 1.159-8.115; P=0.02), and significant plaque enhancement (OR =4.372; 95% CI: 1.101-17.358; P=0.03); however, the multivariate results showed that the only independent factors associated with WMHs were age (OR =1.095; 95% CI: 1.019-1.176; P=0.01) and intraplaque hemorrhage (OR =5.88; 95% CI: 1.466-23.592; P=0.01). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that age and intraplaque hemorrhage may be associated with more severe WMHs in patients with acute ischemic stroke, which may be helpful for further clinical examination and intervention treatment.

Objective: Gastroblastoma is an extremely rare gastric tumor. Its pathogenesis remains unclear and there is a lack of specific clinical symptoms. The aim of this paper is to report a case of gastroblastoma and provide references for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this disease. Methods: The diagnosis and treatment of a 51-year-old female patient with gastroblastoma were retrospectively reported. Analyzing this case by combining the clinical data such as imaging and pathological results of patients with the relevant literature. Results: The patient's chief complaint was the presence of melena persisted for over two weeks. Abdominal contrast-enhanced CT showed gastric antral nodules, and micro-probe endoscopic ultrasonography was considered as "gastric antral protruding lesions". The initial diagnosis of "gastric stromal tumor" was made after admission, and surgical treatment was performed on September 23, 2021. Postoperative pathology showed that gastric mixed epithelial and stromal tumor, combined with immunohistochemical staining, was suggestive of gastroblastoma. No signs of tumor recurrence or metastasis were observed during the 2-year follow-up. Conclusion: Combined with the existing literature reports, the incidence of gastroblastoma is mainly higher in young men, and the predilection site is gastric antrum. The biological behavior of the tumor tends to be indolent, and the prognosis of most cases is favorable. However, due to the extremely small number of cases, this conclusion still needs a large number of cases and follow-up data to support. Postoperative pathological and immunohistochemical examination results are the only methods for definite diagnosis at present, and surgery is the first choice for treatment.

The mechanism by which ubiquitin-specific protease 18 (USP18) (enzyme commission: 3.4.19.12) inhibition in cancer promotes cell pyroptosis via the induction of interferon (IFN)-stimulated genes has been recently demonstrated. It is also known that USP18 influences the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of glioma cells. In the present study, the upregulation of USP18 in glioma was revealed through bulk transcriptome analysis, which was associated with poor prognosis in patients with glioma. Furthermore, USP18 levels affected the response to immunotherapy in patients with glioma. Single-cell transcriptome and enrichment analyses demonstrated that USP18 was associated with type 1 IFN responses in glioma T cells. To demonstrate the effect of USP18 expression levels on glioma cells, USP18 expression was knocked down in U251 and U87MG ATCC cell lines. A subsequent Cell Counting Kit-8 assay revealed that glioma cell viability was significantly decreased 4 days after USP18 knockdown. In addition, the knockdown of USP18 expression significantly inhibited the clonogenicity of U251 and U87MG ATCC cells. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that knockdown of USP18 expression inhibited the proliferation of glioma cells, which may be mediated by the effect of USP18 on the IFN-I response.

Glioma is a highly vascularized tumor of the central nervous system. Angiogenesis plays a predominant role in glioma progression and is considered an important therapeutic target. Our previous study showed that vasorin (VASN), a transmembrane protein, is overexpressed in glioma and promotes angiogenesis; however, the potential mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we found that human vascular endothelial cells (hECs) co-cultured with VASN-overexpressing glioma cells exhibited accelerated migration ability and increased expression of VASN originated from glioma cells. VASN was found in exosomes secreted by glioma cells and could be taken up by hECs. hECs showed more edge filopodia and significantly upregulated expression of endothelial tip cell marker gene and protein levels after co-culture with VASN-overexpressing glioma cells. In clinical glioma tissue and orthotopic transplantation glioma tissue, the vascular density and the number of vascular endothelial cells with a tip cell phenotype in VASN-overexpressed tissues were significantly higher than in tissues with low expression. At the molecular level, VASN interacted with VEGFR2 and caused internalization and autophosphorylation of VEGFR2 protein, and then activated the AKT signaling pathway. Our study collectively reveals the function and mechanism of VASN in facilitating angiogenesis in glioma, providing a new therapeutic target for glioma. Implications: These findings demonstrate that VASN exocytosed from glioma cells enhanced the migration of vascular endothelial cells by VEGFR2/AKT signaling pathway.

Extracellular ATP plays a key role in regulating plants stress responses. Here, we aimed to determine whether ATP can alleviate the glyphosate toxicity in maize seedlings under high temperature by regulating antioxidant responses. Foliar spraying with 100 µM glyphosate inhibited the growth of maize seedlings at room temperature (25 °C), leading to an increase in shikimic acid accumulation and oxidative stress (evaluated via lipid peroxidation, free proline, and H2O2 content) in the leaves, all of which were further exacerbated by high temperature (35 °C). The growth inhibition and oxidative stress caused by glyphosate were both alleviated by exogenous ATP. Moreover, the glyphosate-induced antioxidant enzyme activity and antioxidant accumulation were attenuated by high temperature, while ATP treatment reversed this inhibitory effect. Similarly, qPCR data showed that the relative expression levels of antioxidant enzyme-related genes (CAT1, GR1, and γ-ECS) in maize leaves were upregulated by ATP before exposure to GLY. Moreover, high temperature-enhanced GLY residue accumulation in maize leaves was reduced by ATP. ATP-induced detoxification was attenuated through NADPH oxidase (NOX) inhibition. Higher NOX activities and O2•- production were noted in ATP-treated maize leaves compared to controls prior to GLY treatment, indicating that the extracellular ATP-induced alleviation of GLY toxicity was closely associated with NOX-dependent reactive oxygen species signalling. The current findings present a new approach for reducing herbicide toxicity in crops exposed to high temperatures.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of male breast cancer (MBC) patients and the factors influencing their prognosis. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case series analysis of 117 MBC cases who were treated at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital from 2009 to 2022. Cox proportional hazard model was used to identify prognostic factors of MBC. Nomogram was constructed based on these factors, which was further evaluated by C-index and calibration curves. Results: A total of 115 MBC cases were finally included in our analyses, with median diagnosis age of 59 years. Of these cases, 80.0% were estrogen receptor (ER) positive, 79.2% were progesterone receptor (PR) positive, 48.7% were human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) negative, and 42.6% had Ki67 levels higher than 15%. 108 (93.9%) cases underwent radical mastectomy, while only 3 (2.6%) received breast-conserving surgery. The Logrank test suggested that lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) was negatively associated with both overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of MBC, while platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were only positively associated with OS (all P-values < 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis showed that age (HR 1.08, 95% CI 1.03-1.13) was significant prognostic factors for OS. Meanwhile, age (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.02-1.10), histological differentiation grade (poorly differentiated/undifferentiated vs. well-differentiated: HR 2.55, 95% CI 1.05-6.17), and TNM stage (IV vs. I: HR 31.59, 95% CI 6.01-165.93) were also significant prognostic factors for DFS. Nomograms were developed for DFS, with C-indexes of 0.782, indicating good predictive performance. Conclusion: Increased age, bigger tumor size, higher TNM stage, and lower histological differentiation grade were associated with poor MBC prognosis, and LMR, PLR, and NLR might be potential predictors for MBC prognosis.

Anti-coronavirus peptides (ACVPs) represent a relatively novel approach of inhibiting the adsorption and fusion of the virus with human cells. Several peptide-based inhibitors showed promise as potential therapeutic drug candidates. However, identifying such peptides in laboratory experiments is both costly and time consuming. Therefore, there is growing interest in using computational methods to predict ACVPs. Here, we describe a model for the prediction of ACVPs that is based on the combination of feature engineering (FE) optimization and deep representation learning. FEOpti-ACVP was pre-trained using two feature extraction frameworks. At the next step, several machine learning approaches were tested in to construct the final algorithm. The final version of FEOpti-ACVP outperformed existing methods used for ACVPs prediction and it has the potential to become a valuable tool in ACVP drug design. BACKGROUND: Human Deltex 2 (DTX2) is a ubiquitin E3 ligase that functions as an oncogene and has been shown to participate in many human cancers. However, the role of DTX2 in glioma progression has remained obscure. In this study, we explore the mechanism underlying the function of DTX2 in glioma progression. METHODS: The associations between DTX2 expression and clinical characteristics of glioma were determined by bioinformatic analysis of data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Human Protein Atlas. The expression of DTX2 in glioma tissues was detected using immunohistochemistry and western blotting. Lentivirus-mediated gene knockdown and overexpression were used to determine the effects of DTX2 and helicase-like transcription element (HLTF) on glioma cell proliferation and migration with CCK-8, cell colony formation, transwell, and wound healing assays; flow cytometry in vitro; and animal models in vivo. The interaction of the DTX2 and HLTF proteins was verified by immunoprecipitation assay and confocal microscopy. RESULTS: DTX2 was highly expressed in glioma samples, and this was correlated with worse overall survival. Silencing of DTX2 suppressed glioma cell viability, colony formation, and migration and induced cell apoptosis. In vitro ubiquitination assays confirmed that DTX2 could downregulate HLTF protein levels by increasing ubiquitination of the HLTF protein. We also observed that HLTF inhibited proliferation and migration of glioma cells. Subcutaneous xenografts with DTX2-overexpressing U87 cells showed significantly increased tumor volumes and weights. CONCLUSIONS: We have identified DTX2/HLTF as a new axis in the development of glioma that could serve as a prognostic or therapeutic marker.

The cell division cycle associated (CDCA) genes regulate the cell cycle; however, their relationship with prognosis in glioma has been poorly reported in the literature. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was utilized to probe the CDCA family in relation to the adverse clinical features of glioma. Glioma single-cell atlas reveals specific expression of CDCA3, 4, 5, 8 in malignant cells and CDCA7 in neural progenitor cells (NPC)-like malignant cells. Glioma data from TCGA, the China Glioma Genome Atlas Project (CGGA) and the gene expression omnibus (GEO) database all demonstrated that CDCA2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 are prognostic markers for glioma. Further analysis identified CDCA2, 5 and 8 as independent prognostic factors for glioma. Lasso regression-based risk models for CDCA families demonstrated that high-risk patients were characterized by high tumor mutational burden (TMB), low levels of microsatellite instability (MSI), and low tumor immune dysfunction and rejection (TIDE) scores. These pointed to immunotherapy for glioma as a potentially viable treatment option Further CDCA clustering suggested that the high CDCA subtype exhibited a high macrophage phenotype and was associated with a higher antigen presentation capacity and high levels of immune escape. In addition, hsa-mir-15b-5p was predicted to be common regulator of CDCA3 and CDCA4, which was validated in U87 and U251 cells. Importantly, we found that CDCAs may indicate response to drug treatment, especially rapamycin, in glioma. In summary, our results suggest that CDCAs have potential applications in clinical diagnosis and as drug sensitivity markers in glioma.

With the continuous advancement of nanotechnology, nanodevices have become crucial components in computing, sensing, and energy conversion applications. The structures of nanodevices typically possess subwavelength dimensions and separations, which pose significant challenges for understanding energy transport phenomena in nanodevices. Here, on the basis of a judiciously designed thermal photonic nanodevice, we report the first measurement of near-field energy transport between two coplanar subwavelength structures over temperature bias up to ∼190 K. Our experimental results demonstrate a 20-fold enhancement in energy transfer beyond blackbody radiation. In contrast with the well-established near-field interactions between two semi-infinite bodies, the subwavelength confinements in nanodevices lead to increased polariton scattering and reduction of supporting photonic modes and, therefore, a lower energy flow at a given separation. Our work unveils exciting opportunities for the rational design of nanodevices, particularly for coplanar near-field energy transport, with important implications for the development of efficient nanodevices for energy harvesting and thermal management.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association of near work, time outdoors, and sleep duration with myopic regression 5 years after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) . METHODS: This cross-sectional study included patients who received SMILE or FS-LASIK at Beijing Tongren Hospital 5 years ago. The patients underwent ophthalmic examinations including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, subjective refraction, slit-lamp examination, keratometry, corneal topography, optical coherence tomography, and fundus examination from January 2020 to March 2023. Fluorescein break-up time was measured and the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire was completed to exclude dry eye. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on near work exposure, physical activities, and sleep duration. RESULTS: A total of 323 eyes were included in the analysis, with a 5-year incidence rate of myopic regression after SMILE or FSLASIK of 16.1%. After adjusted for all confounders, total near work more than 8 hours/day revealed a significant association with myopic regression (odds ratio: 2.461; 95% CI: 1.143 to 5.298, P = .021), particularly in younger adults, women, and patients with high myopia and FS-LASIK treatment. The significant association between sleep duration 8 hours/day or more and myopic regression was restricted to women and patients with FS-LASIK (near significant). However, no significant associations were observed between continuous near work or time outdoors and myopic regression. CONCLUSIONS: Excessive near work exposure was associated with greater myopic regression 5 years after SMILE or FS-LASIK. It is crucial to maintain good visual behavior and care for preventing regression after SMILE or FS-LASIK, especially for younger patients and eyes with high myopia. Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that can be divided into proximal/axial type and classical/distal type. Primary proximal epithelioid sarcoma of the lung is extremely rare. So far, no more than five cases have been reported. We reported a case of primary pulmonary ES and reviewed the literature to summarize its clinicopathological features. A 51-year-old man presented with hemoptysis and cough. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a nodule located in the apical and posterior segments of the left upper lobe of the lung. The patient underwent a lobectomy, and a pathologic diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma was made. Histologically, most tumors are composed of epithelioid cells with evidence of bidirectional expression of epithelium and mesenchyma. The SMARCB1 stain of tumor cells was negative, and a pathogenic mutation of SMARCB1 p.E115* (exon 3) were identified by the next-generation sequencing. Two months after surgery, positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) indicated tumor recurrence, and the patient received a round of adjuvant chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy. After 11 months of follow-up, the patient died. We reported in detail the primary proximal epithelioid sarcoma of the lung treated with immunotherapy for the first time, providing ideas for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose: Neutrophils act as a non-negligible regulator in the initiation and progression of malignancies, playing bifacial roles in the process. Thus, to understand the heterogeneity of tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) comprehensively in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at single-cell resolution is necessary and urgent. Materials and Methods: We applied single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) to portray the subtype-specific transcriptome landscape of TANs in advanced NSCLC using nine freshly obtained specimens. The scRNA-seq data were further processed for pseudo-time analysis to depict the developmental trajectory of TANs. Meanwhile, the interplay between TANs and other cell types within tumor microenvironment (TME) was revealed by intercellular interaction analysis. Results: Seven distinct TAN subtypes were defined, of which, the N3 cluster was considered inflammatory phenotype expressing genes encoding multiple chemotactic cytokines, and correlated with inferior overall survival, indicating that N3 might be a pro-tumorigenic TAN subtype. N1 and N5 clusters were considered to be well differentiated and mature neutrophils based on CXCR2 expression and pseudo-time patterns, and both accounted for relatively high proportions in lung adenocarcinoma. In addition, genes related to neutrophil differentiation were discovered. We also found that TAN subtypes interacted most closely with macrophages through chemokine signaling pathways within TME. Conclusion: Our study refined TAN subtypes and mapped the transcriptome landscape of TANs at single-cell resolution in advanced NSCLC, collectively indicating the heterogeneity of TANs in NSCLC. Neutrophil differentiation- and maturation-related genes were also discovered, which shed light on different functions of TAN subclones in tumor immune escape, and may further provide novel targets for immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a genetic eye disorder that leads to abnormal development of retinal blood vessels, resulting in vision impairment. This study aims to identify pathogenic variants by targeted exome sequencing in 9 independent pedigrees with FEVR and characterize the novel pathogenic variants by molecular dynamics simulation. METHODS: Clinical data were collected from 9 families with FEVR. The causative genes were screened by targeted next-generation sequencing (TGS) and verified by Sanger sequencing. In silico analyses (SIFT, Polyphen2, Revel, MutationTaster, and GERP + +) were carried out to evaluate the pathogenicity of the variants. Molecular dynamics was simulated to predict protein conformation and flexibility transformation alterations on pathogenesis. Furthermore, molecular docking techniques were employed to explore the interactions and binding properties between LRP5 and DKK1 proteins relevant to the disease. RESULTS: A 44% overall detection rate was achieved with four variants including c.4289delC: p.Pro1431Argfs*8, c.2073G > T: p.Trp691Cys, c.1801G > A: p.Gly601Arg in LRP5 and c.633 T > A: p.Tyr211* in TSPAN12 in 4 unrelated probands. Based on in silico analysis and ACMG standard, two of them, c.4289delC: p.Pro1431Argfs*8 and c.2073G > T: p.Trp691Cys of LRP5 were identified as novel pathogenic variants. Based on computational predictions using molecular dynamics simulations and molecular docking, there are indications that these two variants might lead to alterations in the secondary structure and spatial conformation of the protein, potentially impacting its rigidity and flexibility. Furthermore, these pathogenic variants are speculated to potentially influence hydrogen bonding interactions and could result in an increased binding affinity with the DKK1 protein. CONCLUSIONS: Two novel genetic variants of the LRP5 gene were identified, expanding the range of mutations associated with FEVR. Through molecular dynamics simulations and molecular docking, the potential impact of these variants on protein structure and their interactions with the DKK1 protein has been explored. These findings provide further support for the involvement of these variants in the pathogenesis of the disease.

RESUMEN

T cell proliferation regulators (Tcprs), which are positive regulators that promote T cell function, have made great contributions to the development of therapies to improve T cell function. CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) -T cell therapy, a type of adoptive cell transfer therapy that targets tumor cells and enhances immune lethality, has led to significant progress in the treatment of hematologic tumors. However, the applications of CAR-T in solid tumor treatment remain limited. Therefore, in this review, we focus on the development of Tcprs for solid tumor therapy and prognostic prediction. We summarize potential strategies for targeting different Tcprs to enhance T cell proliferation and activation and inhibition of cancer progression, thereby improving the antitumor activity and persistence of CAR-T. In summary, we propose means of enhancing CAR-T cells by expressing different Tcprs, which may lead to the development of a new generation of cell therapies.

Advancements in longevity research have provided insights into the impact of cardiac aging on the structural and functional aspects of the heart. Notable changes include the gradual remodeling of the myocardium, the occurrence of left ventricular hypertrophy, and the decline in both systolic and diastolic functions. Macrophages, a type of immune cell, play a pivotal role in innate immunity by serving as vigilant agents against pathogens, facilitating wound healing, and orchestrating the development of targeted acquired immune responses. Distinct subsets of macrophages are present within the cardiac tissue and demonstrate varied functions in response to myocardial injury. The differentiation of cardiac macrophages according to their developmental origin has proven to be a valuable strategy in identifying reparative macrophage populations, which originate from embryonic cells and reside within the tissue, as well as inflammatory macrophages, which are derived from monocytes and recruited to the heart. These subsets of macrophages possess unique characteristics and perform distinct functions. This review aims to summarize the current understanding of the roles and phenotypes of cardiac macrophages in various conditions, including the steady state, aging, and other pathological conditions. Additionally, it will highlight areas that require further investigation to expand our knowledge in this field.

RESUMEN

In recent years, research on tetracycline antibiotics has gradually shifted from their antibacterial effects to anticancer effects. Doxycycline, minocycline, and tigecycline as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tetracycline antibiotics have been the main subjects of studies. Evidence indicated that they have anticancer properties and are able to control cancer progression through different mechanisms, such as anti-proliferation, anti-metastasis, and promotion of autophagy or apoptosis. In addition, studies have shown that these three tetracycline antibiotics can be utilized in conjunction with chemotherapeutic and targeted drugs to inhibit cancer progression and improve the quality of patient survival. Therefore, doxycycline, minocycline, and tigecycline are taken as examples in this work. Their mechanisms of action in different cancers and related combination therapies are introduced. Their current roles in alleviating the suffering of patients undergoing chemotherapy when used as adjuvant drugs in clinical treatment are also described. Finally, the research gaps and potential research directions at this stage are briefly summarized.
