BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Engaging in recommended levels of physical activity (PA) is associated with reduced overall and cause-specific mortality rates. Our study aims to examine the relationship between gardening-specific PA and all-cause and cause-specific mortality based on representative U.S. adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 13,812 adults representing 663.5 million non-institutionalized U.S. adults were included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Self-reported gardening activity (GA) was assessed by a validated questionnaire, and outcomes of interest were all-cause mortality and mortality specific to certain causes. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using survey-multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. During a median follow-up period of 16.8 years (Interquartile range = 14.8-18.7), there were 3,476 deaths. After adjusting for potential covariates, we found that participants exposed to GA were more likely to have a lower risk of total mortality [HR (95% CI): 0.76 (0.68, 0.85), P-value < 0.001], cancer-specific mortality [HR (95% CI): 0.81 (0.67, 0.99), P-value < 0.05], cardiovascular disease mortality [HR (95% CI): 0.65 (0.53, 0.80), P-value < 0.001], and respiratory disease mortality [HR (95% CI): 0.66 (0.45, 0.98), P-value < 0.05], compared to those without GA exposure. Furthermore, engaging in GA more frequently and for longer durations was significantly associated with a lower total mortality risk. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence that engaging in GA is associated with a decreased risk of overall and cause-specific mortality. However, further longitudinal or interventional studies are needed to investigate the potential benefits of GA.

PURPOSE: Whether brain connectomics can predict 1-year decreased Quality of Life (QoL) in patients with breast cancer are unclear. A longitudinal study was utilized to explore their prediction abilities with a multi-center sample. METHODS: 232 breast cancer patients were consecutively enrolled and 214 completed the 1-year QoL assessment (92.2%). Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging was collected before the treatment and a multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) was performed to differentiate whole-brain resting-state connectivity patterns. Net Reclassification Improvement (NRI) as well as Integrated Discrimination Improvement (IDI) were calculated to estimate the incremental value of brain connectomics over conventional risk factors. RESULTS: Paracingulate Gyrus, Superior Frontal Gyrus and Frontal Pole were three significant brain areas. Brain connectomics yielded 7.8-17.2% of AUC improvement in predicting 1-year decreased QoL. The NRI and IDI ranged from 20.27 to 54.05%, 13.21-33.34% respectively. CONCLUSION: Brain connectomics contribute to a more accurate prediction of 1-year decreased QoL in breast cancer. Significant brain areas in the prefrontal lobe could be used as potential intervention targets (i.e., Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy) to improve long-term QoL outcomes in breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Salt stress is one of the key factors limiting rice production. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) enhance plant stress resistance. However, the molecular mechanism underlying salt tolerance in rice induced by AOS remains unclear. FL478, which is a salt-tolerant indica recombinant inbred line and IR29, a salt-sensitive rice cultivar, were used to comprehensively analyze the effects of AOS sprayed on leaves in terms of transcriptomic and metabolite profiles of rice seedlings under salt stress. RESULTS: In this experiment, exogenous application of AOS increased SOD, CAT and APX activities, as well as GSH and ASA levels to reduce the damage to leaf membrane, increased rice stem diameter, the number of root tips, aboveground and subterranean biomass, and improved rice salt tolerance. Comparative transcriptomic analyses showed that the regulation of AOS combined with salt treatment induced the differential expression of 305 and 1030 genes in FL478 and IR29. The expressed genes enriched in KEGG pathway analysis were associated with antioxidant levels, photosynthesis, cell wall synthesis, and signal transduction. The genes associated with light-trapping proteins and RLCK receptor cytoplasmic kinases, including CBA, LHCB, and Lhcp genes, were fregulated in response to salt stress. Treatment with AOS combined with salt induced the differential expression of 22 and 50 metabolites in FL478 and IR29. These metabolites were mainly related to the metabolism of amino and nucleotide sugars, tryptophan, histidine, and ß -alanine. The abundance of metabolites associated with antioxidant activity, such as 6-hydroxymelatonin, wedelolactone and L-histidine increased significantly. Combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that dehydroascorbic acid in the glutathione and ascorbic acid cycles plays a vital role in salt tolerance mediated by AOS. CONCLUSION: AOS activate signal transduction, regulate photosynthesis, cell wall formation, and multiple antioxidant pathways in response to salt stress. This study provides a molecular basis for the alleviation of salt stress-induced damage by AOS in rice.

Given the targeted binding ability and cleavage activity of the emerging CRISPR/Cas12a assay which transduces the target into its cleavage activity exhibited broadly prospective applications in integrated sensing and actuating system. Here, we elaborated a universal approach to quickly activate CRISPR/Cas12a for low-abundance biomarker detection based on the amplification strategy of a target-induced spherical nucleic acid enzyme (SNAzyme) network that could accelerate the output of activators. Specifically, multifunctional Y-shaped probes and hairpin probes (HPs, which contained the specific sequence of the activators of CRISPR/Cas12a and the substrate chain of DNAzyme) were rationally designed to construct SNAzyme. Target recognition induced disassembly of the Y-shaped probes, which released DNAzyme strands to active DNAzyme and accompanied by SNAzyme self-assembly into SNAzyme network. Interestingly, compared with randomly dispersed SNAzyme, the reaction kinetics of the SNAzyme network enhanced 1.6 times in response to Α-methyl acyl-CoA racemase (AMACR, a biomarker for prostate cancer), which was attributed to the promoted catalytic efficiency of DNAzyme by the confined SNAzyme network. Benefiting from these, the prepared biosensor based on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) platform by loading AuAg nanoclusters (AuAgNCs) into metal-organic framework-5 (MOF-5) exhibited satisfying detection performance for AMACR with a wide linear range (0.001 µg/mL to 100 µg/mL) and a low detection limit (1.0 × 10-4 µg/mL, which exhibited significant potential in clinical diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: The rapid pace of life nowadays has seen a gradual increase in public involvement in weekend warrior (WW), a physical activity (PA) pattern that allows people to exercise once or twice a week, the recommended moderate-to-vigorous PA per week, since regular PA takes much time. We aim at exploring the effect of WW activity and other PA patterns on depression symptoms in U.S adults. METHODS: The level of PA was measured by self-reporting activity patterns, (inactive, insufficiently active, WW and regularly active). Participants with Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores above 10 are considered to have depression symptoms. RESULTS: A weighted sample of 23,258 participants representing 1049.8 million non-institutionalized U.S adults aged from 20 to 80. Compared with the inactive group, general adults who met the PA guidelines with PA once or twice per week [WW, adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.790, 95%CI: 0.638, 0.987] or more frequent PA [Regularly active, (AOR = 0.761, 95%CI: 0.671, 0.864)], were inversely associated with depression symptoms, while the association has not been observed in adults with insufficiently active PA (AOR = 0.892, 95%CI: 0.783, 1.017). Increase in minutes, sessions and intensity of PA in regularly active and WW groups brought additional benefits for depression symptoms. CONCLUSION: WW and other equivalent PA intensities patterns may be sufficient to reduce the risk of depression symptom. With the same recommended levels of PA, whether spread over the week or done in fewer days, adults may achieve the same benefits.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to explore the impact of a new cancer diagnosis on resilience of patients and whether the resilience patterns could predict Quality of Life (QoL) in the first year. METHODS: An exploratory linear piecewise growth mixture modeling (PGMM) with one hypothetical dot (3 months since diagnosis, T1) was employed to identify different resilience patterns and growth in 289 patients with different cancer diagnoses at five assessment occasions (T0-T4). Logistic regression analysis was performed to select potential predictors and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was utilized to test PGMM's discriminative ability against 1-year QoL. RESULTS: Five discrete resilience trajectories with two growing trends were identified, including "Transcendence" (7.3%), "Resilient" (47.4%), "Recovery" (18.7%), "Damaged" (14.9%) and "Maladaption" (11.8%). Advanced stage, colorectal cancer, and receiving surgery therapy were significant predictors of negative resilience trajectories ("Damaged" or "Maladaption"). Discriminative ability was good for PGMM (AUC = 0.81, 95%CI, 0.76-0.85, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Heterogeneity is identified in resilience growth before and after 3 months since diagnosis. 26.7% newly diagnosed patients need additional attention especially for those with advanced colorectal cancer and receiving surgery therapy.

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a five-ring triterpenoid compound, which is widely present in plants. Due to a wide range of pharmacological activities, oleanolic acid has attracted more and more attention. However, oleanolic acid is insoluble in water and has low bioavailability, which limits its clinical application. In this review, we focus on summarizing the anti-cancer activity and mechanism of the A ring or C-28 carboxyl modified derivatives of OA since 2015, to determine the strength of its anti-cancer effectiveness and evaluate whether it could be used as a clinical anti-cancer drug.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of bronchiolitis in young children, but there are few safe and effective treatments for this disease. Platycodonis Radix is widely used as an antitussive and expectorant drug for preventing various diseases in lower respiratory tract, in which the polysaccharides are one of the main bioactivity constituents. In this study, the protective effects of the P. Radix polysaccharides (PRP) against RSV-induced bronchiolitis in juvenile mice and RSV-induced apoptosis of epithelial HEp-2 cells were investigated. The results showed that PRP obviously decreased the levels of IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ and TSLP in lung tissues, and reduced the number of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of RSV-infected mice. Furthermore, it reduced the apoptosis of RSV-infected HEp-2 cells and remarkably inhibited the mRNA expressions of RSV L gene, which indicated that PRP affected transcription and replication of RSV in host cells. Compared with that in RSV-infected group, miR-181a-5p in the PRP-treated group presented the highest relative abundance and its expression was violently reduced by approximately 30%. Mechanistically, PRP had the similar effects as miR-181a-5p antagomir on RSV-induced apoptosis and inflammation in HEp-2 cells via upregulating BCL2, MLL3 and SIRT1, which could be reversed by miR-181a-5p mimic. Therefore, it demonstrated that PRP not only protected against RSV-induced lung inflammation in mice but also inhibited apoptosis of RSV-infected HEp-2 cells via suppressing miR-181a-5p and transcriptionally activating Hippo and SIRT1 pathways.

Thirty-eight disulfides containing N-arylacetamide were designed and synthesized in an effort to develop novel urease inhibitors. Biological evaluation revealed that some of the synthetic compounds exhibited strong inhibitory potency against both cell-free urease and urease in intact cell with low cytotoxicity to mammalian cells even at concentration up to 250 µM. Of note, 2,2'-dithiobis(N-(2-fluorophenyl)acetamide) (d7), 2,2'-dithiobis(N-(3,5-difluorophenyl)acetamide) (d24), and 2,2'-dithiobis(N-(3-fluorophenyl)acetamide) (d8) were here identified as the most active inhibitors with IC50 of 0.074, 0.44, and 0.81 µM, showing 32- to 355-fold higher potency than the positive control acetohydroxamic acid. These disulfides were confirmed to bind urease without covalent modification of the cysteine residue and to inhibit urease reversibly with a mixed inhibition mechanism. They also showed very good anti-Helicobacter pylori activities with d8 showing a comparable potency to the clinical used drug amoxicillin. The impressive in vitro biological profile indicated their immense potential as therapeutic agents to tackle H. pylori caused infections.

This study investigated the epidemiological and clinical peculiarities of BCL2 and BCL6 rearrangement in patients with high grade B-cell lymphoma (HGBL) from Taiwan, compared with data from Western countries. Two hundred and eighty-two DLBCL cases from Taipei Medical University-affiliated hospitals (n = 179) and Tri-Service General Hospital (n = 103) were enrolled for this study. From the 282, 47 (16.7%) had MYC translocation; 24 of these harbored concurrent BCL2 and/or BCL6 translocation (double-hit, DH or triple-hit, TH). Twelve DH-HGBL cases had simultaneous MYC and BCL6 translocations, 8 harbored MYC and BCL2 rearrangement, while the remaining 4 patients exhibited TH. Together, 66.7% of DH/TH-HGBL patients were BCL6 rearrangement positive. Among these BCL6-rearranged DH/TH-HGBL patients, only 6 (37.5%) overexpressed MYC and BCL6 proteins simultaneously, indicating that MYC-BCL6 co-overexpression may not be plausible surrogate biomarker for screening BCL6-rearranged DH-HGBL. By the end of year 5, all patients with TH-HGBL, BCL2 DH-HGBL and all but one BCL6 DH-HGBL cases had expired or were lost to follow-up. Progression-free survival (PFS) was longer for the non-DH/TH-HGBL group compared with the DH/TH-HGBL group. While the patients with BCL2 DH-HGBL were lost to follow-up by day 800, their remaining TH-HGBL and BCL6 DH-HGBL peers exhibited very poor PFS, regardless of age strata. More so, patients with BCL6 rearrangement were 5.5-fold more likely associated with extranodal involvement compared with their BCL2-rearranged peers. Moreover, ~60.0% of the BCL6-rearranged DH-HGBL cases were non-GCB, suggesting that including screening for BCL6 rearrangement in patients with the non-GCB phenotype may aid medical decision-making and therapeutic strategy. Contrary to contemporary data from western countries, 2 in every 3 patients with DH/TH-HGBL in Taiwan harbor BCL6 rearrangement. Consistent with present findings, we recommend mandatory screening for BCL6 rearrangement in patients with aggressive HGBL in Taiwan.

Myoepithelial tumors of soft tissue are uncommon neoplasms characterized histologically by spindle to epithelioid cells arranged in cords, nests, and/or reticular pattern with chondromyxoid to hyaline stroma, and genetically by rearrangement involving EWSR1 (among other less common genes) in about half of the cases. The diagnosis often requires immunostaining to confirm myoepithelial differentiation, most importantly the expression of epithelial markers and S100 protein and/or GFAP. However, there are cases wherein the morphology is reminiscent of myoepithelial tumors, while the immunophenotype falls short. Here, we report 2 highly similar myoepithelioma-like tumors arising in the hands of young adults. Both tumors were well-demarcated and composed of alternating cellular areas with palely eosinophilic hyaline stroma and scattered acellular zones of densely eosinophilic collagen deposition. The tumor cells were mainly epithelioid cells and arranged in cords or small nests. Vacuolated cells encircling hyaline matrix globules were focally prominent. A minor component of nonhyaline fibrous nodular areas composed of bland spindle cells and rich vasculature was also observed. Perivascular concentric spindle cell proliferation and perivascular hyalinization were present in some areas. The tumor cells were positive for CD34 and epithelial membrane antigen (focal) by immunostaining, while largely negative for cytokeratin, S100, GFAP, p63, GLUT1, and claudin-1. By RNA sequencing, a novel OGT-FOXO3 fusion gene was identified in case 1 and confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization in both cases. Sharing the unusual clinicopathologic features and the novel fusion, these 2 cases probably represent a distinct tumor entity, whose relationship with myoepithelial tumors and tumorigenic mechanisms exerted by the OGT-FOXO3 fusion remain to be studied.

NUTM1 gene rearrangement is the genetic hallmark of NUT carcinoma, an aggressive tumor that most commonly affects the thoracic and head and neck regions and often exhibits squamous differentiation. The most common fusion partner gene is BRD4, followed by BRD3 and NSD3. Recently, NUTM1 gene rearrangement has been identified in rare tumors from soft tissues, intracranial locations, and other visceral organs. These tumors often show high grade malignant epithelioid to round cell histomorphology and lack evidence of squamous and/or epithelial differentiation. Therefore, their relationship with classic NUT carcinoma is still uncertain. Here, we present a primary mandible bone tumor of a 21-year-old female exhibiting monotonous epithelioid and rhabdoid cytomorphology, vesicular chromatin, and prominent nucleoli. The initial immunohistochemical workup was non-specific, showing only CD34 positivity while being negative for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), EMA, p63, etc. INI-1 expression was retained. RNA sequencing was performed and identified a rare ZNF532-NUTM1 gene fusion, which had only been reported in a single case of pulmonary NUT carcinoma. The fusion was confirmed by FISH for NUTM1 gene rearrangement and supported by diffuse and strong NUT immunoreactivity. MYC mRNA up-regulation and immunoreactivity, a common finding in NUT carcinoma, was also observed in this tumor, suggesting a possible common pathogenetic mechanism and potential treatment target. The patient presented with a non-metastatic disease status and received hemimandibulectomy, selective neck dissection (level Ib), and post-operative radiation therapy. She remained disease free 3.6 years after the initial diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Autophagy exists widely in various physiological and pathological conditions. Lots of investigations have verified that the autophagic activity is always related to the occurrence and the development of cancer. Endometriosis (EMs) is a disease that endometrium-like tissues abnormally grow outside the uterus and also considered to possess the characters of tumor because of its malignant biological behavior. INTRODUCTION: Recently, several studies have already revealed that autophagy may play a potential role in proliferative-phase EMs. However, the function of autophagic activity in secretory-phase EMs is still unclear. METHODS: In our work, we explored autophagic activity between normal endometrium and EMs lesion endometrium during different menstrual phases and EMs stages. The clinical endometrium samples from 73 women were selected in this study, including 30 healthy individuals and 43 patients with EMs (endometrium samples include eutopic and its matched ectopic endometrium). All the participants were divided into two groups according to the menstrual cycle, namely proliferative-phase and secretive- phase group. Among the patients with EMs, 22 individuals in proliferative phase and the other 21 individuals in secretory phase were further classified into the groups of Stage I-II and Stage III-IV according to revised-American Fertility Society (r-AFS). Two autophagy-related proteins microtubuleassociated protein 1 light chain 3 beta-II (LC3B-II) and sequestosome protein (P62), which are believed to be the indicators of autophagy activity, were chosen in the study. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, Western blot assay and Real-Time quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTqPCR) were used to examine the expression of LC3B-II and P62 in protein and mRNA level accordingly. RESULT: It showed that the expression of LC3B-II both in protein and mRNA level decreased and that of P62 increased in secretory phase of the healthy group (P<0.05), but showed no significant difference in ectopic and its eutopic endometrium group during proliferative and secretory phase (P>0.05). In addition, the expression of LC3B-II in ectopic endometrium group was significantly lower than that of its eutopic endometrium group (P<0.05), and the expression of P62 was significantly higher accordingly (P<0.05). At the same time, both LC3B-II and P62 levels remained same between eutopic endometrium group and control group (P>0.05). Furthermore, compared to Stage I-II EMs group, the expression of LC3B-II was significantly lower (P<0.05) and P62 was significantly higher (P<0.05) in Stage III-IV EMs during secretory phase. CONCLUSION: Taken together, the periodicity-losing in EMs and the decreased autophagic activity in ectopic endometrium may exert a potential role in the pathogenesis of EMs. Down-regulated autophagy of ectopic endometrium in secretory phase may be related to the progression of EMs.

Sulforaphane (SFN), a natural compound derived from cruciferous vegetables, has been proved to possess potent anti-cancer activity. SMYD3 is a histone methyltransferase which is closely related to the proliferation and migration of cancer cells. This study showed that SFN could dose-dependently induce cell cycle arrest, stimulate apoptosis, and inhibit proliferation and migration of gastric carcinoma cells. Accompanied with these anti-cancer effects, SMYD3 and its downstream genes, myosin regulatory light chain 9, and cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61, was downregulated by SFN. Furthermore, overexpression of SMYD3 via transfection could abolish the effects of SFN, suggesting that SMYD3 might be an important mediator of SFN. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the role of SMYD3 in the anti-cancer of SFN. These findings might throw light on the development of novel anti-cancer drugs and functional food using SFN-rich cruciferous vegetables.

OBJECTIVE: Classic theory test has been used to develop and validate the 25-item Resilience Scale Specific to Cancer (RS-SC) in Chinese patients with cancer. This study was designed to provide additional information about the discriminative value of the individual items tested with an item response theory analysis. METHODS: A two-parameter graded response model was performed to examine whether any of the items of the RS-SC exhibited problems with the ordering and steps of thresholds, as well as the ability of items to discriminate patients with different resilience levels using item characteristic curves. RESULTS: A sample of 214 Chinese patients with cancer diagnosis was analyzed. The established three-dimension structure of the RS-SC was confirmed. Several items showed problematic thresholds or discrimination ability and require further revision. CONCLUSIONS: Some problematic items should be refined and a short-form of RS-SC maybe feasible in clinical settings in order to reduce burden on patients. However, the generalizability of these findings warrants further investigations.

BACKGROUND: Because of medical advances, metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is now viewed as a chronic disease, rather than an imminent death sentence. Helping women live with this disease requires more than a medical approach to symptoms. Thus, a mentor-based and supportive-expressive program 'Be Resilient to Breast Cancer' (BRBC) was designed to help Chinese women with MBC enhance their resilience levels, biopsychosocial functions, and potentially extend their life span. METHODS: A total of 226 women with MBC were randomly assigned, in a 1 : 1 ratio, to an intervention group (IG) that participated in BRBC or to a control group (CG) that received no intervention. Be Resilient to Breast Cancer was conducted for 120 min once a week. Primary outcomes were cancer-specific survival and secondary outcomes were resilience, Allostatic Load Index (ALI), anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QoL). The Cox proportional-hazards model was used for survival analysis and growth mixture models were performed for secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Be Resilient to Breast Cancer did not significantly prolong 3- or 5-year survival (median survival, 36.7 months in IG and 31.5 months in CG). The hazard ratio for death was 0.736 (95% CI, 0.525-1.133, P=0.076; univariate Cox model) and 0.837 (95% CI, 0.578-1.211, P=0.345; multivariate Cox analysis). The IG improved in anxiety (ES=0.85, P<0.001), depression (ES=0.95, P<0.001), QoL (ES=0.55, P<0.001), resilience (ES=0.67, P<0.001), and ALI (ES=0.90, P<0.001) compared to CG. CONCLUSIONS: BRBC does not improve survival of women with MBC in this study, though longer follow up is warranted. It positively impacts resilience, QoL, ALI, and emotional distress.

PURPOSE: Parents of children diagnosed with cancer often experience considerable emotional distress for their children with negative emotions, such as disbelief, depression, anxiety, hope and shock. Resilience is defined as the psychological characteristics that promote positive adaptation in the face of stress and adversity, which has been demonstrated to relate to positive coping and less psychological distress. Thus, a quick screening tool to evaluate the levels of resilience of parents with cancer-diagnosed children is urgently required. METHODS: The Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate the CD-RISC-10 using a sample size of 500 parents. Velicer's Minimum Average Partial (MAP) Test and a parallel analysis were also supplemented to confirm the EFA-derived structure of the scale. The participants were given the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K-10), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) and Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) to test the associates with CD-RISC-10 and obtain the cut-off of the scale. RESULTS: The Chinese version of CD-RISC-10 has good psychometric properties and retains its single dimension in the original English version, which can explain 49.602% of the total variance. The CFA demonstrates the fit indices of a one-order model: Chi-Square = 39.987, CMIN/DF = 1.333, P < 0.001, TLI = 0.914, CFI = 0.981, GFI = 0.962, NFI = 0.926, IFI = 0.979, RFI = 0.889, RMR = 0.042, and RMSEA = 0.041. The CD-RISC presents statistical associations with other scales, and the cut-off is 25.5. CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese version of the CD-RISC-10, which is reliable, valid and easy to use, is suitable for clinical settings. The CD-RISC-10 enables a quick understanding of the level of resilience of the parents when their children undergo treatment, which can be the most important indicator to their psychological health.

OBJECTIVE: Parents of children diagnosed with cancer often experience high levels of illness uncertainty. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Chinese Version of the Parent Perception of Uncertainty Scale for Childhood Cancer (PPUS-CC) in Mainland China. METHODS: Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed using study population of 420 parents. The participants were also given the social support questionnaire and assessed using the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Zarit Burden Interview, and Self-Rating Depression Scale to test the association with PPUS-CC and obtain the cut-off of the scale. RESULTS: The Chinese version of PPUS-CC includes 14 items, and two factors were extracted by EFA, which could explain the 54.56% variances. The Cronbach's α of two factors ranged from 0.830 to 0.877. The dimensions of PPUS-CC show statistical association with other scales, and the cut-off is 42.5. CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of PPUS-CC, as a reliable, valid, and easy-to-use clinical tool, can be adapted in clinical settings as a screening tool to recognize parents with high-risk psychological problems.

To reduce the risk of adjustment problems for breast cancer patients in mainland China, we examined the efficacy of a multidiscipline mentor-based program, Be Resilient to Breast Cancer (BRBC), delivered after breast surgery to (a) increase protective factors of social support, hope for the future, etc.; (b) decrease risk factors of Physical and Emotional Distress; and (c) increase outcomes of Resilience, Transcendence and Quality of Life (QOL). A multisite randomized controlled trial was conducted at 6 specialist cancer hospitals. 101 and 103 breast cancer patients were allocated to intervention group (IG) and control group (CG), respectively, and 112 general females (without breast cancer) were allocated to the norm group (NG). Participants completed measures that were related to latent variables derived from the Resilience Model for Breast Cancer (RM-BC) at baseline (T1), 2 months (T2), 6 months (T3), and 12 months (T4) after intervention. At T2, the IG reported significantly lower Depression (ES = 0.65,P = 0.0019) and Illness Uncertainty (ES = 0.57, P = 0.004), better Hope (ES = 0.81, P < 0.001) and QOL (ES = 0.60, P = 0.002) than did the CG. At T3, the IG reported significantly lower Anxiety (ES = 0.74, P < 0.001), better Social Support (ES = 0.51,P = 0.009), Transcendence (ES = 0.87, P < 0.001), and Resilience (ES = 0.83, P < 0.001) compared with the CG. At T4, the IG reported better Resilience though not significant (P = 0.085) and better Transcendence (P = 0.0243) than did the NG. The BRBC intervention improves the positive health outcomes and decreases the risk factors of illness-related distress of breast cancer patients during the high-risk cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Insulin resistance, a common pathogenesis of NAFLD and T2D, is partially caused by alterations in angiotensin II (Ang II) and is accompanied by hypoadiponectinemia. We aimed to investigate whether the circulating Ang II and adiponectin concentrations are related to hyperglycemia in male NAFLD patients. METHODS: Thirty-five controls and 85 NAFLD patients without prior known T2D were enrolled. All participants were non-smoking men who performed 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria, the NAFLD patients were divided into the euglycemia and hyperglycemia groups. The NAFLD patients with hyperglycemia were further divided into the isolated impaired fasting glucose (I-IFG) and postprandial hyperglycemia subgroups. The fasting serum Ang II and adiponectin concentrations were measured. RESULTS: Among the 85 NAFLD patients, 40 (47%) had hyperglycemia, including I-IFG (18%) and postprandial hyperglycemia (29%). The serum Ang II concentrations in the euglycemia and hyperglycemia groups were significantly higher than those observed in the control and euglycemia groups, respectively; whereas the serum adiponectin concentrations were significantly lower. The serum Ang II concentrations were significantly higher in the postprandial hyperglycemia subgroup than in the I-IFG subgroup. The serum Ang II and adiponectin concentrations were found to be independent predictors of hyperglycemia in the NAFLD patients. The serum Ang II concentration was significantly associated with the serum adiponectin and 2-hour postprandial glucose concentrations in the NAFLD patients. CONCLUSION: An increased circulating Ang II concentration is associated with hypoadiponectinemia and postprandial hyperglycemia in male NAFLD patients and may be involved in the pathogenesis of T2D in NAFLD patients.
