RESUMEN

Granular cell tumors, uncommon soft tissue growths, predominantly manifest in the subcutaneous and tongue areas, while those in the gastrointestinal tract are scarce and develop slowly. Patients typically show no distinct clinical symptoms and are hard to differentiate from gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors, smooth muscle tumors, neural sheath tumors, and rhabdomyosarcomas using endoscopy. This paper details a case of a granular cell tumor in the stomach addressed through endoscopic submucosal dissection, focusing on its endoscopic attributes and clinicopathological traits.

RESUMEN

Circulating tumor cells are typically found in the peripheral blood of patients, offering a crucial pathway for the early diagnosis and prediction of cancer. Traditional methods for early cancer diagnosis are inefficient and inaccurate, making it difficult to isolate tumor cells from a large number of cells. In this paper, a new spiral microfluidic chip with asymmetric cross-section is proposed for rapid, high-throughput, label-free enrichment of CTCs in peripheral blood. A mold of the desired flow channel structure was prepared and inverted to make a trapezoidal cross-section using a micro-nanotechnology process of 3D printing. After a systematic study of how flow rate, channel width, and particle concentration affect the performance of the device, we utilized the device to simulate cell sorting of 6 µm, 15 µm, and 25 µm PS (Polystyrene) particles, and the separation efficiency and separation purity of 25 µm PS particles reached 98.3% and 96.4%. On this basis, we realize the enrichment of a large number of CTCs in diluted whole blood (5 mL). The results show that the separation efficiency of A549 was 88.9% and the separation purity was 96.4% at a high throughput of 1400 µL/min. In conclusion, we believe that the developed method is relevant for efficient recovery from whole blood and beneficial for future automated clinical analysis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a prevalent and highly malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. Recently, the RATIONALE-306 trial demonstrated that tislelizumab combined with chemotherapy provided overall survival benefits for these patients. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of this treatment approach in Chinese patients with advanced ESCC from the perspective of healthcare system. METHODS: A Markov model was constructed to assess the economic and health benefits associated with tislelizumab plus chemotherapy over a 10-year lifetime horizon, utilizing data from the RATIONALE-306 trial. The analysis encompassed the calculation of several key parameters, including the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER), total cost, incremental cost, total effectiveness, and incremental effectiveness. Tislelizumab was considered cost-effective if the ICER obtained was below the willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold of US$38,223 per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY); otherwise, it would be deemed not cost-effective. To ensure the robustness of the findings, the results were subjected to one-way sensitivity analysis and probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA). RESULTS: In the base-case analysis, the incremental effectiveness and cost associated with tislelizumab plus chemotherapy, compared to chemotherapy alone, were determined to be 0.40 QALY and US$7604, respectively. This resulted in an ICER of US$18,846 per QALY, which is below the WTP threshold of US$38,223 per QALY. Furthermore, the results from the one-way sensitivity analysis and PSA indicated robustness of the findings. CONCLUSION: Our lifetime simulation study demonstrated that, in the case of advanced ESCC, the combination of tislelizumab and chemotherapy offers increased effectiveness compared to chemotherapy alone, albeit at a higher cost. Moreover, considering the current WTP threshold in China, the addition of tislelizumab to chemotherapy is considered a cost-effective approach.

RESUMEN

Single-crystal nickel-rich materials are promising alternatives to polycrystalline cathodes owing to their excellent structure stability and cycle performance while the cathode material usually appears high cation mixing, which may have a negative effect on its electrochemical performance. The study presents the structural evolution of single-crystal LiNi0.83 Co0.12 Mn0.05 O2 in the temperature-composition space using temperature-resolved in situ XRD and the cation mixing is tuned to improve electrochemical performances. The as-synthesized single-crystal sample shows high initial discharge specific capacity (195.5 mAh g-1 at 1 C), and excellent capacity retention (80.1 % after 400 cycles at 1 C), taking account of lower structure disorder (Ni2+ occupying Li sites is 1.56 %) and integrated grains with an average of 2-3 µm. In addition, the single-crystal material also displays a superior rate capability of 159.1 mAh g-1 at the rate of 5 C. This excellent performance is attributed to the rapid Li+ transportation within the crystal structure with fewer Ni2+ cations in Li layer as well as intactly single grains. In sum, the regulation of Li+ /Ni2+ mixing provides a feasible strategy for boosting single-crystal nickel-rich cathode material.

RESUMEN

In order to maximize the substrate conversion, co-production of hydrogen and methane from two-stage anaerobic digestion has attracted wide attention. In two-stage fermentation process, the cohesive strategy is considered as a key indicator for bio-hythane yield. In this work, corncob powder was utilized as raw material. The pH of fermentative broth, bio-hythane yield, gas production rate and energy conversion efficiency were taken as indexes. Under the directional control of bio-chemical reaction process, the effects of diverse coupling time nodes on the fermentation process and the bio-hythane co-production potential were investigated. The results showed that when the coupling time node was 48 h, hydrogen production potential and methane production potential were 22.29 mL/g TS and 141.14 mL/g TS, respectively. The hydrogen content in the bio-hythane was 13.64% which satisfied the hydrogen concentration requirement, and the energy conversion efficiency was 27.6%.

RESUMEN

The specific effects of long-term exposure to high air pollution on human health and biological remain unclear. To explore the adverse health effects as well as biological mechanisms and biomarkers for durative exposure to air pollution, 183 traffic policemen and 88 office policemen were enrolled in this study. The concentration of PM2.5 in both the traffic and office policemen's working environments were obtained. Detailed personal questionnaires were completed and levels of inflammation, oxidative stress and DNA damage markers of all participants were analyzed in this study. The average PM2.5 concentration of the intersections of main roads and the offices of control group were 132.4±48.9µg/m3 and 50.80±38.6µg/m3, respectively. The traffic policemen, who stably exposed to at least 2 times higher PM2.5 in their work area as compared with the control group, have a median average duration of 7.00years, and average cumulative intersection duty time reached 8030h. No statistically significant differences in the levels of inflammation markers were observed between the traffic and office policemen. However, the DNA damage markers in traffic policemen shared significant positive correlation with cumulative intersection duty time and higher than those in the office policemen. Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that the increase of cumulative intersection duty time by 1h per day for one year was associated with the increase in 8-hydroxy-20-deoxyguanosine of 0.329% (95% CI: 0.249% to 0.409%), tail DNA of 0.051% (95% CI: 0.041% to 0.061%), micronucleus frequency of 0.036‰ (95% CI: 0.03‰ to 0.043‰), and a decrease in glutathione of 0.482% (95% CI: -0.652% to -0.313%). These findings suggest that long-term exposure to high air pollution could induce cumulative DNA damages, supporting the hypothesis that durative exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of cancer.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Inonotus obliquus polysaccharides on testicular injury induced by exposure to high power microwave (HPM) in rats. METHODS: A total of 30 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, i.e., the normal control group, the microwave radiation model group, the treatment group, the new microwave radiation model group, and the prevention group, 6 in each group. All rats, except those in the normal control group, were exposed to microwave at an average power density of 200 mW/cm2 for 6 min. Rats in the control group and the model group were administered with normal saline by gastrogavage, once a day. Rats in the treatment group and the prevention group were given with Inonotus obliquus polysaccharides by gastrogavage, 2 mL each time (400 mg/kg body weight), once a day. All rats were sacrificed on the 11th day.The sperm density and the rate of sperm deformity were determined. Pathological changes of testis were observed by light microscope and transmission electron microscope. RESULTS: Short-term HPM irradiation could significantly reduce the sperm density and increase the sperm deformity rate (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, obvious pathological changes of testes occurred. Compared with the two model groups, the sperm density increased and the sperm deformity rate decreased in the treatment group and the prevention group (P < 0.05). Under the light microscope, injuries of spermatogenic cells and stromal cells, as well as vascular dilatation and congestion were obviously alleviated in the treatment group and the prevention group. Mitochondrial swelling and endoplasmic reticulum expansion shown by ultrastructural observation were also significantly alleviated. Of them, injuries of spermatogenic cells and inflammation response were milder in the treatment group than in the prevention group. CONCLUSIONS: Inonotus obliquus polysaccharides had significant protective effect on microwave radiation induced testicular injury. Better effect was obtained by therapeutic medication than preventive medication.
