Background: Rete testis dysplasia is a cystic anomaly arising from the rete testis presenting normally in the pediatric population. These cases usually regress spontaneously without the need for surgical intervention. There are rare, reported cases of rete testis dysplasia in adulthood, which have been managed surgically. Case presentation: A 58-year-old man presented with lower urinary tracts symptoms and found to have a slightly larger right testicle namely in the lower pole near the epididymis. Investigation was done using ultrasound of the testicles with Doppler showing an 8 mm cyst contained in 16.5×12.1 mm cystic dysplasia near the rete testis. MRI of the testicles revealed a small intratesticular cyst with adjacent band-like signals, in keeping with rete testis dysplasia. This patient was placed under surveillance and the rete testis dysplasia is stable after 6 months and will not be operated on unless progression on ultrasound is encountered. Clinical discussion: The management of cystic dysplasia of the rete testis has been evolving with time. While there have never been clear-cut guidelines on the treatment of this condition, a radical orchiectomy of the affected testicle had traditionally been the preferred treatment option. There have only been three case reports of cystic dysplasia of the rete testis in adults, none of which are known to have been managed by observation. Conclusion: In conclusion, the authors report a unique case of rete testis dysplasia being managed conservatively showing the benign features of such a pathology, which may be actively surveyed through sequential imaging.

Jellyfish are known for experiencing periodic blooms in population, which occur when their density increases suddenly. The present study assessed the level of heavy metals and proximate composition in the jellyfish Lobonemoides robustus collected from Cox's Bazar coast of Bangladesh. This is the first study conducted in Bangladesh. Most of the studied metals were not possible to detect in L. robustus samples because concentrations were below the detection limit. Ca, Na, Se, and Mg were found to have safe levels in the L. robustus while the amount of Pb was recorded 0.39 ppm. The findings of Target Hazard Quotient, and Carcinogenic Risk indicate that the L. robustus is safe for human consumption (both for children and adults). Hence, it is suitable for consumption and can be exported. This study emphasizes the need for regular marine environment monitoring to ensure that the seafood harvested from these waters is safe for consumption.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an abnormal proliferation of cells within the colon and rectum, leading to the formation of polyps and disruption of mucosal functions. The disease development is influenced by a combination of factors, including inflammation, exposure to environmental mutagens, genetic alterations, and impairment in signaling pathways. Traditional treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are often used but have limitations, including poor solubility and permeability, treatment resistance, side effects, and post-surgery issues. Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) have emerged as a superior alternative, offering enhanced drug solubility, precision in targeting cancer cells, and regulated drug release. Thereby addressing the shortcomings of conventional therapies and showing promise for more effective CRC management. The present review sheds light on the pathogenesis, signaling pathways, biomarkers, conventional treatments, need for NDDS, and application of NDDS against CRC. Additionally, clinical trials, ongoing clinical trials, marketed formulations, and patents on CRC are also covered in the present review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, various coronaviruses have caused severe respiratory illnesses worldwide. For example the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections of COVID-19 outbreak in 2019 in Wuhan, China. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have significantly expanded our comprehension of how specific genetic variations are linked to diseases. Research has demonstrated the existence of genetic factors influencing susceptibility to coronaviruses. The objective of this study was to examine the association of certain loci with the COVID-19 in Saudi population. METHODS: In the present study we have examined the link between the COVID-19 disease and certain genetic variants in hospitalized COVID-19 patients (n = 16) in Tabuk and Bisha, Kingdom Saudi Arabia. We used the genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) and Comprehensive variant annotation was performed different databases and tools such as Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING), PanelApp and PolyPhen-2. RESULTS: The study showed that the genetic variants associated with genes such as Homeostatic Iron Regulator (HFE) (found in 7 patients, representing 44%), complement factor H (CFH) (6 patients, 38%), cadherin 23 (CDH23) (4 patients, 25%), cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) (3 patients, 19%), Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGFB1) (3 patients, 19%), CREB-binding protein (CREBBP) (2 patients, 13%), E1A Binding Protein P300 (EP300) (2 patients, 13%), hemoglobin subunit beta (HBB) (2 patients, 13%), interferon regulatory factor 7 (IRF7) (2 patients, 13%), and unc-119 lipid binding chaperone (UNC119) (2 patients, 13%) might be associated with susceptibility to coronavirus. We also identified mutations in the COVID-19 patient that are pathogenic or likely pathogenic. CONCLUSION: A recurrent pathogenic mutation, HFE p.His63Asp (H63D), was identified in 7 patients, suggesting its potential contribution to disease severity. Additionally, a likely pathogenic variant, HBB p.Glu7Val (E7V), was present in 2 patients, highlighting its potential role in disease susceptibility. Our results shed light on the key genetic mechanisms of COVID-19 pathogenesis and help to identify and stratify the individuals or populations that are at risk to corona virus infection. The identification of susceptible individuals or populations assist in prevention and/or in treatment programs.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is currently the most common malignancy of the liver. It typically occurs due to a series of oncogenic mutations that lead to aberrant cell replication. Most commonly, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurs as a result of pre-occurring liver diseases, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis. Given its aggressive nature and poor prognosis, the early screening and diagnosis of HCC are crucial. However, due to its plethora of underlying risk factors and pathophysiologies, patient presentation often varies in the early stages, with many patients presenting with few, if any, specific symptoms in the early stages. Conventionally, screening and diagnosis are performed through radiological examination, with diagnosis confirmed by biopsy. Imaging modalities tend to be limited by their requirement of large, expensive equipment; time-consuming operation; and a lack of accurate diagnosis, whereas a biopsy's invasive nature makes it unappealing for repetitive use. Recently, biosensors have gained attention for their potential to detect numerous conditions rapidly, cheaply, accurately, and without complex equipment and training. Through their sensing platforms, they aim to detect various biomarkers, such as nucleic acids, proteins, and even whole cells extracted by a liquid biopsy. Numerous biosensors have been developed that may detect HCC in its early stages. We discuss the recent updates in biosensing technology, highlighting its competitive potential compared to conventional methodology and its prospects as a tool for screening and diagnosis.

Background: The current study aims to investigate the superior mesh fixation method, single absorbable tacker versus conventional method, in patients undergoing bilateral inguinal hernia repair through the laparoscopic total abdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) approach. Materials and Methods: The current randomized clinical trial has been conducted on 81 patients undergoing bilateral hernia repair through TAPP. The patients were randomly assigned into one of the mesh fixation groups including single absorbable tacker (Group S) (n = 41) and conventional method (Group C) (n = 40). All patients were assessed during the hospital stay and 1 month postoperatively to assess the surgery-associated complications and days for return to daily activity. Eura-Hs questionnaire was applied to assess the quality of life (QOL) after hernia surgery during 12-month follow-up. Results: The duration of bilateral inguinal hernia operation (P = 0.067), postoperative urinary catheterization (P = 0.813), and hospital stay duration (P = 0.779) did not differ between the groups; whereas Group C significantly required a longer time for returning to daily activity (P < 0.001). Only a patient in Group C represented hematoma (P = 0.494). Seroma incidence was not statistically different between the two groups (P = 0.712). Postoperative pain was statistically less in Group S (P < 0.001 for all the assessments). Postoperative QOL within a year after hernia repair revealed an insignificant difference between the groups in general (P > 0.05); however, a pain subscale was significantly less in Group S (P = 0.002). Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, a single absorbable tacker was generally superior to the conventional method considering its less pre- and postoperative complications. However, the two methods did not differ regarding 1-year follow-up QOL.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a problem for the healthcare system worldwide. DM has very serious complications such as blindness, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease. In addition to the very bad socioeconomic impacts, it influences patients and their families and communities. The global costs of DM and its complications are huge and expected to rise by the year 2030. DM is caused by genetic and environmental risk factors. Genetic testing will aid in early diagnosis and identification of susceptible individuals or populations using ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels present in different tissues such as the pancreas, myocardium, myocytes, and nervous tissues. The channels respond to different concentrations of blood sugar, stimulation by hormones, or ischemic conditions. In pancreatic cells, they regulate the secretion of insulin and glucagon. Mutations in the KCNJ11 gene that encodes the Kir6.2 protein (a major constituent of KATP channels) were reported to be associated with Type 2 DM, neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM), and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). Kir6.2 harbors binding sites for ATP and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-diphosphate (PIP2). The ATP inhibits the KATP channel, while the (PIP2) activates it. A Kir6.2 mutation at tyrosine330 (Y330) was demonstrated to reduce ATP inhibition and predisposes to NDM. In this study, we examined the effect of mutations on the Kir6.2 structure using bioinformatics tools and molecular dynamic simulations (SIFT, PolyPhen, SNAP2, PANTHER, PhD&SNP, SNP&Go, I-Mutant, MuPro, MutPred, ConSurf, HOPE, and GROMACS). Our results indicated that M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H mutations influence Kir6.2 structure and function and therefore may cause DM. We conclude that MD simulations are useful techniques to predict the effects of mutations on protein structure. In addition, the M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H variant in the Kir6.2 protein may be associated with DM. These results require further verification in protein-protein interactions, Kir6.2 function, and case-control studies.

Hepatic cancer is widely regarded as the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Despite recent advances in treatment options, the prognosis of liver cancer remains poor. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop more representative in vitro models of liver cancer for pathophysiology and drug screening studies. Fortunately, an exciting new development for generating liver models in recent years has been the advent of organoid technology. Organoid models hold huge potential as an in vitro research tool because they can recapitulate the spatial architecture of primary liver cancers and maintain the molecular and functional variations of the native tissue counterparts during long-term culture in vitro. This review provides a comprehensive overview and discussion of the establishment and application of liver organoid models in vitro. Bioengineering strategies used to construct organoid models are also discussed. In addition, the clinical potential and other relevant applications of liver organoid models in different functional states are explored. In the end, this review discusses current limitations and future prospects to encourage further development.

Background: Altered cytokine levels have been associated with poor outcomes among COVID-19 patients. TNF-α, IL-8 and IL-10 are key cytokines in COVID-19 pathogenesis, and CXCR-2 is a major chemokine receptor involved in inflammatory response. Polymorphisms in the genes of these proteins are proposed to influence disease outcomes. In this study, we aimed to find out the association of genetic polymorphisms in TNF-α, IL-8, IL-10 and CXCR-2 genes with susceptibility to and mortality of COVID-19. Methods: The present case-control study was conducted on 230 subjects, among whom 115 were clinically diagnosed and RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients and 115 healthy control subjects. The polymorphisms in TNFα -308 G>A (rs1800629), IL-8 -251T>A (rs4073), CXCR2 +785 C>T (rs2230054) genes were detected by ARMS -PCR assay whereas for IL-10 (-1082 G>A), rs1800896 G>A allele-specific PCR assay was used and their association with COVID-19 susceptibility and mortality was estimated by multivariate analysis. The results were analyzed for risk of infection and mortality through different inheritance models. Results: Frequencies of TNF-α rs1800629 GA, AA, IL-8 rs4073 TA, AA, IL-10 (-1082 G>A), rs1800896 GA and GG, and CXCR2 rs2230054 CT genotypes were significantly higher in COVID-19 patients compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, COVID-19 patients had a higher frequency of the polymorphic A allele of TNF-α, the A allele of IL-8, the G allele of IL-10, and the T allele of CXCR2. The risk of susceptibility to COVID-19 was significantly associated with TNF-α rs1800629 GA, GA+AA genotypes and the A allele, IL-8 rs4073 TA, AA genotypes and A allele, IL-10 rs1800872 GA and CC genotypes and C allele, and CXCR2 rs2230054 CT and CT+CC genotypes. TNF-α-GA and AA genotypes and A allele, IL-8 TA and AA genotypes and A allele and CXCR-2 CC and CT genotypes have significant associations with mortality risk in COVID-19 patients, while GA and GG genotypes of the IL-10 are shown to confer significant protection against mortality from COVID-19. Conclusion: The findings of this study provide important insights into the COVID-19 disease and susceptibility risk. The polymorphisms in TNFα -308 G>A (rs1800629), IL-8 -251T>A (rs4073), IL-10 (-1082 G>A), rs1800896 and CXCR2 +785 C>T (rs2230054) are associated with the risk of susceptibility to COVID-19 and with mortality in COVID-19 patients. Further studies with larger sample sizes are necessary to confirm our findings.

While global attention has been primarily focused on the occurrence and persistence of microplastics (MP) in urban lakes, relatively little attention has been paid to the problem of MP pollution in rural recreational lakes. This pioneering study aims to shed light on MP size, composition, abundance, spatial distribution, and contributing factors in a rural recreational lake, 'Nikli Lake' in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh. Using density separation, MPs were extracted from 30 water and 30 sediment samples taken from ten different locations in the lake. Subsequent characterization was carried out using a combination of techniques, including a stereomicroscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results showed a significant prevalence of MPs in all samples, with an average amount of 109.667 ± 10.892 pieces/kg3 (dw) in the sediment and 98.167 ± 12.849 pieces/m3 in the water. Small MPs (<0.5 mm), fragments and transparent colored particles formed the majority, accounting for 80.2%, 64.5% and 55.3% in water and 78.9%, 66.4% and 64.3% in sediment, respectively. In line with global trends, polypropylene (PP) (53%) and polyethylene (PE) (43%) emerged as the predominant polymers within the MPs. MP contents in water and sediment showed positive correlations with outflow, while they correlated negatively with inflow and lake depth (p > 0.05). Local activities such as the discharge of domestic sewage, fishing waste and agricultural runoff significantly influence the distribution of polypropylene. Assessment of pollution factor, pollution risk index and pollution load index values at the sampling sites confirmed the presence of MPs, with values above 1. This study is a baseline database that provides a comprehensive understanding of MP pollution in the freshwater ecosystem of Bangladesh, particularly in a rural recreational lake. A crucial next step is to explore ecotoxicological mechanisms, legislative measures and future research challenges triggered by MP pollution.

Childhood epilepsy affects up to 1 % of children. It has been shown that 30 % of patients are resistant to drug treatments, making further investigation of other potential treatment strategies necessary. One such approach is the ketogenic diet (KD) showing promising results and potential benefits beyond the use of current antiepileptic drugs. This study aims to investigate the effects of KD on inflammation and oxidative stress, as one of the main suggested mechanisms of neuroprotection, in children with epilepsy. This narrative review was conducted using the Medline and Google Scholar databases, and by searching epilepsy, drug-resistant epilepsy, child, children, ketogenic, ketogenic diet, diet, ketogenic, keto, ketone bodies (BHB), PUFA, gut microbiota, inflammation, inflammation mediators, neurogenic inflammation, neuroinflammation, inflammatory marker, adenosine modulation, mitochondrial function, MTOR pathway, Nrf2 pathway, mitochondrial dysfunction, PPARÉ£, oxidative stress, ROS/RNS, and stress oxidative as keywords. Compelling evidence underscores inflammation and oxidative stress as pivotal factors in epilepsy, even in cases with genetic origins. The ketogenic diet effectively addresses these factors by reducing ROS and RNS, enhancing antioxidant defenses, improving mitochondrial function, and regulating inflammatory genes. Additionally, KD curbs pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine production by dampening NF-κB activation, inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome, increasing brain adenosine levels, mTOR pathway inhibition, upregulating PPARÉ£ expression, and promoting a healthy gut microbiota while emphasizing the consumption of healthy fats. KD could be considered a promising therapeutic intervention in patients with epilepsy particularly in drug-resistant epilepsy cases, due to its targeted approach addressing oxidative stress and inflammatory mechanisms.

Grapefruit mint (Mentha suaveolens × piperita) is a hybrid, perennial, and aromatic plant widely cultivated all over the world and used in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries mostly for its valuable essential oil. Herein, we evaluated the anticancer activity of the grapefruit mint essential oil, cultivated in Iran. For the chemical composition analysis of essential oil, GC-MS was used. MTT assay was utilized for assessing the cytotoxic activity of the essential oil. The type of cell death was determined by annexin V/PI staining. Essential oil effect on the expression of maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3), a regulatory lncRNA involved in cell growth, proliferation, and metastasis, was studied using qRT-PCR. Linalool (43.9%) and linalool acetate (40.1%) were identified as the dominant compounds of essential oil. Compared with MCF-7, the MDA-MB-231 cells were more sensitive to essential oil (IC50 = 7.6 µg/ml in MCF-7 and 5.9 µg/ml in MDA-MB-231 after 48 h). Essential oil induced cell death by apoptosis. Wound healing scratch assay confirmed the anti-invasive effect of essential oil. In addition, essential oil upregulated the tumor suppressor MEG3 in breast cancer cells. These results provide new insights into grapefruit mint essential oil potential application as an anticancer adjuvant in combination treatments for breast cancer patients.

Pulmonary air leak is the most common complication of lung surgery, contributing to post-operative morbidity in up to 60% of patients; yet, there is no reliable treatment. Available surgical sealants do not match the demanding deformation mechanics of lung tissue; and therefore, fail to seal air leak. To address this therapeutic gap, a sealant with structural and mechanical similarity to subpleural lung is designed, developed, and systematically evaluated. This "lung-mimetic" sealant is a hydrofoam material that has alveolar-like porous ultrastructure, lung-like viscoelastic properties (adhesive, compressive, tensile), and lung extracellular matrix-derived signals (matrikines) to support tissue repair. In biocompatibility testing, the lung-mimetic sealant shows minimal cytotoxicity and immunogenicity in vitro. Human primary monocytes exposed to sealant matrikines in vitro upregulate key genes (MARCO, PDGFB, VEGF) known to correlate with pleural wound healing and tissue repair in vivo. In rat and swine models of pulmonary air leak, this lung-mimetic sealant rapidly seals air leak and restores baseline lung mechanics. Altogether, these data indicate that the lung-mimetic sealant can effectively seal pulmonary air leak and promote a favorable cellular response in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery remains limited by the absence of haptic feedback, which surgeons routinely rely on to assess tissue stiffness. This limitation hinders surgeons' ability to identify and treat abnormal tissues, such as tumors, during robotic surgery. METHODS: To address this challenge, we developed a robotic tissue palpation device capable of rapidly and non-invasively quantifying the stiffness of soft tissues, allowing surgeons to make objective and data-driven decisions during minimally invasive procedures. We evaluated the effectiveness of our device by measuring the stiffness of phantoms as well as lung, heart, liver, and skin tissues obtained from both rats and swine. RESULTS: Results demonstrated that our device can accurately determine tissue stiffness and identify tumor mimics. Specifically, in swine lung, we determined elastic modulus (E) values of 9.1 ± 2.3, 16.8 ± 1.8, and 26.0 ± 3.6 kPa under different internal pressure of the lungs (PIP) of 2, 25, and 45 cmH2O, respectively. Using our device, we successfully located a 2-cm tumor mimic embedded at a depth of 5 mm in the lung subpleural region. Additionally, we measured E values of 33.0 ± 5.4, 19.2 ± 2.2, 33.5 ± 8.2, and 22.6 ± 6.0 kPa for swine heart, liver, abdominal skin, and muscle, respectively, which closely matched existing literature data. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Results suggest that our robotic palpation device can be utilized during surgery, either as a stand-alone or additional tool integrated into existing robotic surgical systems, to enhance treatment outcomes by enabling accurate intraoperative identification of abnormal tissue.

OBJECTIVE: Rhinosinusitis is one of the most common reasons for a visit to otolaryngology clinics. Some patients are candidates for sinus surgery. Infiltration of 1:100 000 adrenaline in the pterygopalatine fossa was studied, with the aim of evaluating the effect on bleeding in the surgical field. METHODS: This double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 2021-2022 on 40 candidates for endoscopic sinus surgery. For each patient, one side of the pterygopalatine fossa was randomly selected to be infiltrated with a vasoconstrictor. Surgical field bleeding on each side was evaluated. RESULTS: Blood loss was 35.8 ± 20.9 ml in the study group and 38.4 ± 23.7 ml for the control group, with no statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.49). In addition, there was no difference between the two groups in terms of the surgical field based on Boezaart scores. CONCLUSION: Although there are some recommendations on the usage of vasoconstrictors via the pterygopalatine foramen, debate remains.

Explosive nitroaromatic compounds (epNACs) are a group of chemicals that have caused significant human casualties through terrorist attacks and they also pose health risks. For the benefit of homeland security and environmental health, there is room for advancing research on the precise detection of epNACs. Coordination polymers (CPs) successfully serve this purpose because of their binding abilities and quenching capabilities. In this regard, a one-dimensional (1D) CP [Zn(bdc)(avp)2(H2O)]n (1; H2bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and avp = 4-[2-(9-anthryl)vinyl]pyridine) was synthesized, which remarkably demonstrated extremely efficient ratiometric and selective sensing capacity toward epNACs and the mutagenic pollutant 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with a quick response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided a thorough analysis of the mechanistic routes behind the quenching reaction. Herein, geometrically accessible interaction sites were strategically decorated using anthracene moieties, allowing the quick and precise detection of explosive nitro derivatives and the carcinogenic pollutant TNP with increased sensitivity.

Hantaviruses have evolved a unique translation strategy to boost the translation of viral mRNA in infected cells. Hantavirus nucleocapsid protein (NP) binds to the viral mRNA 5' UTR and the 40S ribosomal subunit via the ribosomal protein S19. NP associated ribosomes are selectively loaded on viral transcripts to boost their translation. Here we demonstrate that NP expression upregulated the steady-state levels of a subset of host cell factors primarily involved in protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum. Detailed investigation of Valosin-containing protein (VCP/p97), one of the upregulated host factors, in both transfected and virus infected cells revealed that NP with the assistance of VCP mRNA 5' UTR facilitates the translation of downstream VCP ORF. The VCP mRNA contains a 5' UTR of 987 nucleotides harboring six unusual start codons upstream of the correct start codon for VCP which is located at 988th position from the 5' cap. In vitro translation of a GFP reporter transcript harboring the VCP mRNA 5' UTR generated both GFP and a short polypeptide of ~14 KDa by translation initiation from start codon located in the 5' UTR at 542nd position from the 5' cap. The translation initiation from 542nd AUG in the UTR sequence was confirmed in cells using a dual reporter construct expressing mCherry and GFP. The synthesis of 14KDa polypeptide dramatically inhibited the translation of the ORF from the downstream correct start codon at 988th position from the 5' cap. We report that purified NP binds to the VCP mRNA 5' UTR with high affinity and NP binding site is located close to the 542ndAUG. NP binding shuts down the translation of 14KDa polypeptide which then facilitates the translation initiation at the correct AUG codon. Knockdown of VCP generated lower levels of poorly infectious hantavirus particle in the cellular cytoplasm whose egress was dramatically inhibited in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. We demonstrated that VCP binds to the hantavirus glycoprotein Gn before its incorporation into assembled virions and facilitates viral spread to neighboring cells during infection. Our results suggest that ribosome engagement at the 542nd AUG codon in the 5' UTR likely regulates the endogenous steady state levels of VCP in cells. Hantaviruses interrupt this regulatory mechanism to enhance the steady state levels of VCP in virus infected cells. This augmentation facilitates virus replication, supports the transmission of the virus to adjacent cells, and promotes the release of infectious virus particles from the host cell.

Due to its harmful effects on ecosystems and human health, microplastic (MP) pollution has become a significant environmental problem on a global scale. Although MPs' pollution path and toxic effects on marine habitats have been examined worldwide, the studies are limited to the rare biodiversity estuary region of Hatiya Island from the northern Bay of Bengal. This study aimed to investigate the MP pollution path and its influencing factors in estuarine sediments and water in rare biodiversity Hatiya Island in the northern Bay of Bengal. Sixty water and sediment samples were collected from 10 sampling sites on the Island and analyzed for MPs. The abundance of MPs in sediment ranged from 67 to 143 pieces/kg, while the abundance in water ranged from 24.34 to 59 pieces/m3. The average concentrations of MPs in sediment and water were 110.90 ± 20.62 pieces/kg and 38.77 ± 10.09 pieces/m3, respectively. Most identified MPs from sediment samples were transparent (51%), while about 54.1% of the identified MPs from water samples were colored. The fragment was the most common form of MP in both compartments, with a value of 64.6% in sediment samples and 60.6% in water samples. In sediment and water samples, almost 74% and 80% of MP were <0.5 mm, respectively. Polypropylene (PP) was the most abundant polymer type, accounting for 51% of all identified polymers. The contamination factor, pollution load index, polymer risk score, and pollution risk score values indicated that the study area was moderately polluted with MPs. The spatial distribution patterns and hotspots of MPs echoed profound human pathways. Based on the results, sustainable management strategies and intervention measures were proposed to reduce the pollution level in the ecologically diverse area. This study provides important insights into evaluating estuary ecosystem susceptibility and mitigation policies against persistent MP issues.

Toxic metals and freshwater fish's metalloid contamination are significant environmental concerns for overall public health. However, the bioaccumulation and sources of metal(loids) in freshwater fishes from Bangladesh still remain unknown. Thus, the As, Pb, Cd, and Cr concentrations in various freshwater fish species from the Rupsha River basin were measured, including Tenualosa ilisha, Gudusia chapra, Otolithoides pama, Setipinna phasa, Mystus vittatus, Glossogobius giuris, and Pseudeutropius atherinoides. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine metal concentrations. The mean concentrations of metal(loids) in the fish muscle (mg/kg) were found to be As (1.53) > Pb (1.25) > Cr (0.51) > Cd (0.39) in summer and As (1.72) > Pb (1.51) > Cr (0.65) > Cd (0.49) in winter. The analyzed fish species had considerably different metal(loid) concentrations with seasonal variation, and the distribution of the metals (loids) was consistent with the normal distribution. The demersal species, M. vittatus, displayed the highest bio-accumulative value over the summer. However, in both seasons, none of the species were bio-accumulative. According to multivariate statistical findings, the research area's potential sources of metal(loid) were anthropogenic activities linked to geogenic processes. Estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient (THQ), and carcinogenic risk (CR) were used to assess the influence of the risk on human health. The consumers' THQs values were < 1, indicating that there were no non-carcinogenic concerns for local consumers. Both categories of customers had CRs that fell below the permissible range of 1E - 6 to 1E - 4, meaning they were not at any increased risk of developing cancer. The children's group was more vulnerable to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazards. Therefore, the entry of metal(loids) must be regulated, and appropriate laws must be used by policymakers.

Background and aims: Radial artery (RA) is a popular coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) conduit. The challenging issue is vasospasm. A few studies are available on histopathological differences between RA's proximal and distal ends. This study aims to compare histopathological features of the proximal and distal end of RA to find the best technique for anastomosis. Methods: In this matched case-control study, 80 patients were included who underwent CABG and used RA as a graft. Ten subjects were excluded. RA was harvested by open technique, and a cocktail of Papaverine, Verapamil, and Nitroglycerine was frequently applied topically. One centimeter of proximal and distal ends of the RA was evaluated considering its Histopathology. Clinical signs of RA graft vasospasm were monitored from harvesting until the post-operative period. Intima, media, and intima-media thickness (IMT) index were compared between the two cohorts. Results: Vasospasm occurred in 1.41% of patients. The mean intimal thickness in the proximal and distal ends were, respectively, 0.20 (standard deviation [SD] 0.17 mm) vs. 0.31 (SD 0.18 mm) (p < 0.001). The mean media thickness in the distal end was higher than the proximal end (0.98 [SD 0.36] vs. 1.09 [SD 0.37], p = 0.004). IMT index of the proximal and distal ends showed a statistically significant difference (0.22 [SD 0.17] vs. 0.31 [SD 0.19]) (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The overall incidence rate of vasospasm in our study is comparable with other studies using the same cocktail. Proximal RA has a relatively lower medial thickness compared to the distal part, which may induce less vasospasm in CABG patients.
