RESUMEN

The human gut flora comprises a dynamic network of bacterial species that coexist in a finely tuned equilibrium. The interaction with intestinal bacteria profoundly influences the host's development, metabolism, immunity, and overall health. Furthermore, dysbiosis, a disruption of the gut microbiota, can induce a variety of diseases, not exclusively associated with the intestinal tract. The increased consumption of animal protein, high-fat and high-sugar diets in Western countries has been implicated in the rise of chronic and inflammatory illnesses associated with dysbiosis. In particular, this diet leads to the overgrowth of sulfide-producing bacteria, known as sulfidogenic bacteria, which has been linked to inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer, among other disorders. Sulfidogenic bacteria include sulfate-reducing bacteria (Desulfovibrio spp.) and Bilophila wadsworthia among others, which convert organic and inorganic sulfur compounds to sulfide through the dissimilatory sulfite reduction pathway. At high concentrations, sulfide is cytotoxic and disrupts the integrity of the intestinal epithelium and mucus barrier, triggering inflammation. Besides producing sulfide, B. wadsworthia has revealed significant pathogenic potential, demonstrated in the ability to cause infection, adhere to intestinal cells, promote inflammation, and compromise the integrity of the colonic mucus layer. This review delves into the mechanisms by which taurine and sulfide-driven gut dysbiosis contribute to the pathogenesis of sulfidogenic bacteria, and discusses the role of these gut microbes, particularly B. wadsworthia, in human diseases.

The aim of this study was to determine what is considered a long oral surgery and conduct a cost-effective analysis of sedative agents used for intravenous sedation (IVS) and sedation protocols for such procedures. Pubmed and Google Scholar databases were used to identify human studies employing IVS for extractions and implant-related surgeries, between 2003 and July/2023. Sedation protocols and procedure lengths were documented. Sedative satisfaction, operator satisfaction, and sedation assessment were also recorded. Cost estimation was based on The British National Formulary (BNF). To assess bias, the Cochrane Risk of Bias tools were employed. This review identified 29 randomised control trials (RCT), six cohorts, 14 case-series, and one case-control study. The study defined long procedures with an average duration of 31.33 minutes for extractions and 79.37 minutes for implant-related surgeries. Sedative agents identified were midazolam, dexmedetomidine, propofol, and remimazolam. Cost analysis revealed midazolam as the most cost-effective option (<10 pence per procedure per patient) and propofol the most expensive option (approximately £46.39). Bias analysis indicated varying degrees of bias in the included studies. Due to diverse outcome reporting, a comparative network approach was employed and revealed benefits of using dexmedetomidine, propofol, and remimazolam over midazolam. Midazolam, dexmedetomidine, propofol, and remimazolam demonstrated safety and efficacy as sedative agents for conscious IVS in extended procedures like extractions or implant-related surgeries. While midazolam is the most cost-effective option, dexmedetomidine, propofol, and remimazolam offer subjective and clinical benefits. The relatively higher cost of propofol may impede its widespread use. Dexmedetomidine and remimazolam stand out as closely priced options, necessitating further clinical investigations for comparative efficacy assessment.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the association of first-trimester maternal serum biomarkers with preterm birth (PTB), fetal growth restriction (FGR) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) in twin pregnancies. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of twin pregnancies followed at Maternidade Dr. Alfredo da Costa, Lisbon, Portugal, between January 2010 and December 2022. We included women who completed first-trimester screening in our unit and had ongoing pregnancies with two live fetuses, and delivered after 24 weeks. Maternal characteristics, pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and ß-human chorionic gonadotropin (ß-hCG) levels were analyzed for different outcomes: small for gestational age (SGA), gestational hypertension (GH), early and late-onset pre-eclampsia (PE), as well as the composite outcome of PTB associated with FGR and/or HDP. Univariable, multivariable logistic regression analyses and receiver-operating characteristic curve were used. RESULTS: 466 twin pregnancies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, 185 (39.7%) pregnancies were affected by SGA < 5th percentile and/or HDP. PAPP-A demonstrated a linear association with gestational age at birth and mean birth weight. PAPP-A proved to be an independent risk factor for SGA and PTB (< 34 and < 36 weeks) related to FGR and/or HDP. None of the women with PAPP-A MoM > 90th percentile developed early-onset PE or PTB < 34 weeks. CONCLUSION: A high serum PAPP-A (> 90th percentile) ruled out early-onset PE and PTB < 34 weeks. Unless other major risk factors for hypertensive disorders are present, these women should not be considered candidates for aspirin prophylaxis. Nevertheless, close monitoring of all TwP for adverse obstetric outcomes is still recommended.

Introduction: The inflammatory response after spinal cord injury (SCI) is an important contributor to secondary damage. Infiltrating macrophages can acquire a spectrum of activation states, however, the microenvironment at the SCI site favors macrophage polarization into a pro-inflammatory phenotype, which is one of the reasons why macrophage transplantation has failed. Methods: In this study, we investigated the therapeutic potential of the macrophage secretome for SCI recovery. We investigated the effect of the secretome in vitro using peripheral and CNS-derived neurons and human neural stem cells. Moreover, we perform a pre-clinical trial using a SCI compression mice model and analyzed the recovery of motor, sensory and autonomic functions. Instead of transplanting the cells, we injected the paracrine factors and extracellular vesicles that they secrete, avoiding the loss of the phenotype of the transplanted cells due to local environmental cues. Results: We demonstrated that different macrophage phenotypes have a distinct effect on neuronal growth and survival, namely, the alternative activation with IL-10 and TGF-ß1 (M(IL-10+TGF-ß1)) promotes significant axonal regeneration. We also observed that systemic injection of soluble factors and extracellular vesicles derived from M(IL-10+TGF-ß1) macrophages promotes significant functional recovery after compressive SCI and leads to higher survival of spinal cord neurons. Additionally, the M(IL-10+TGF-ß1) secretome supported the recovery of bladder function and decreased microglial activation, astrogliosis and fibrotic scar in the spinal cord. Proteomic analysis of the M(IL-10+TGF-ß1)-derived secretome identified clusters of proteins involved in axon extension, dendritic spine maintenance, cell polarity establishment, and regulation of astrocytic activation. Discussion: Overall, our results demonstrated that macrophages-derived soluble factors and extracellular vesicles might be a promising therapy for SCI with possible clinical applications.

Ankyloglossia can be related to a number of complications, such as breastfeeding difficulties or alterations in craniofacial development. Treatment can involve surgery to correct the altered lingual frenulum and can be performed by various techniques. The purpose of this paper is to present two case reports of ankyloglossia in pediatric patients of different ages, the diagnostic criteria, and the treatment decision rationale, which led to a lingual frenotomy performed with a diode laser.

The key risk factor for glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucoma drainage devices implanted in the eye can reduce IOP and thus stop disease progression. However, most devices currently used in clinical practice are passive and do not allow for postsurgical IOP control, which may result in serious complications such as hypotony (i.e., excessively low IOP). To enable noninvasive IOP control, we demonstrate a novel, miniature glaucoma implant that will enable the repeated adjustment of the hydrodynamic resistance after implantation. This is achieved by integrating a magnetic microvalve containing a micropencil-shaped plug that is moved using an external magnet, thereby opening or closing fluidic channels. The microplug is made from biocompatible poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) (SIBS) containing iron microparticles. The complete implant consists of an SIBS drainage tube and a housing element containing the microvalve and fabricated with hot embossing using femtosecond laser-machined glass molds. Using in vitro and ex vivo microfluidic experiments, we demonstrate that when the microvalve is closed, it can provide sufficient hydrodynamic resistance to overcome hypotony. Valve function is repeatable and stable over time. Due to its small size, our implant is a promising, safe, easy-to-implant, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery device.

Adenosine-5-triphosphate (ATP) is the main energy vector in biological systems, thus its regeneration is an important issue for the application of many enzymes of interest in biocatalysis and synthetic biology. We have developed an electroenzymatic ATP regeneration system consisting in a gold electrode modified with a floating phospholipid bilayer that allows coupling the catalytic activity of two membrane-bound enzymes: NiFeSe hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio vulgaris and F1Fo-ATP synthase from Escherichia coli. Thus, H2 is used as a fuel for producing ATP. This electro-enzymatic assembly is studied as ATP regeneration system of phosphorylation reactions catalysed by kinases, such as hexokinase and NAD+-kinase for respectively producing glucose-6-phosphate and NADP+.

Pulmonary actinomycosis is an uncommon and challenging infectious disease with non-specific symptoms and imaging findings. The authors report a case of a 68-year-old man with diabetes and a history of past smoking who presented with anorexia and weight loss with no significant findings on physical examination. A parenchymal consolidation in the anterior segment of the right upper lobe was detected after a chest computed tomography (CT). Bacterial colonies of Actinomyces species were identified in the histology of transbronchial biopsy. Imaging reassessment after six weeks of treatment with oral amoxicillin showed progression with a high metabolism 10.5 standardized uptake value (SUV) documented on the f-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT. Concern about the possibility of lung cancer was raised and ruled out by a negative transthoracic needle biopsy. The diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis with pyogenic superinfection was presumed. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous amoxicillin and clavulanate for two weeks, followed by six months of oral treatment.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric disturbance with high incidence in aesthetic clinical settings. Early recognition may avoid unnecessary elective procedures with ethical and medicolegal consequences. AIMS: To identify validated BDD screening tools and critically appraise current literature regarding its implementation and efficacy in aesthetic medicine and surgery scenarios, with the purpose of transposing the findings to the broad clinical settings in the field. METHODS: Data was collected using advanced search from PubMed (MEDLINE). Having satisfied the search parameters, 12 studies referring BDD definition according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM-5) criteria and including a BDD screening tool in clinical aesthetic settings were selected. RESULTS: While BDD screening enables the recognition of at-risk individuals, further work is required to uncover the best screening tool for general aesthetic clinical practice. Level III evidence favored BDD Questionnaire (BDDQ)/BDDQ-Dermatology Version (DV), and The Dysmorphic Concern Questionnaire (DCQ) among the limited available validated screening instruments to be used outside the psychiatric environment. Based on level II self-classification, one study selected BDDQ-Aesthetic Surgery (AS) version for rhinoplasty patients. The validation process of both BDDQ-AS and Cosmetic Procedure Screening Questionnaire (COPS) had limitations. For BDD screening potential in avoiding postoperative complications, the limited studies found evaluating the outcomes following aesthetic treatments using validated BDD screening measures showed a trend toward less satisfaction with aesthetic treatment outcome among positive screening population against non-BDD counterparts. CONCLUSION: Further research is necessary to establish more effective methods to identify BDD and evaluate the impact of positive findings on aesthetic intervention outcomes. Future studies may elucidate which BDD characteristics best predict a favorable outcome and provide high-quality evidence for standardized protocols in research and clinical practice.

DsrC is a key protein in dissimilatory sulfur metabolism, where it works as co-substrate of the dissimilatory sulfite reductase DsrAB. DsrC has two conserved cysteines in a C-terminal arm that are converted to a trisulfide upon reduction of sulfite. In sulfate-reducing bacteria, DsrC is essential and previous works suggested additional functions beyond sulfite reduction. Here, we studied whether DsrC also plays a role during fermentative growth of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough, by studying two strains where the functionality of DsrC is impaired by a lower level of expression (IPFG07) and additionally by the absence of one conserved Cys (IPFG09). Growth studies coupled with metabolite and proteomic analyses reveal that fermentation leads to lower levels of DsrC, but impairment of its function results in reduced growth by fermentation and a shift towards more fermentative metabolism during sulfate respiration. In both respiratory and fermentative conditions, there is increased abundance of the FlxABCD-HdrABC complex and Adh alcohol dehydrogenase in IPFG09 versus the wild type, which is reflected in higher production of ethanol. Pull-down experiments confirmed a direct interaction between DsrC and the FlxABCD-HdrABC complex, through the HdrB subunit. Dissimilatory sulfur metabolism, where sulfur compounds are used for energy generation, is a key process in the ecology of anoxic environments, and is more widespread among bacteria than previously believed. Two central proteins for this type of metabolism are DsrAB dissimilatory sulfite reductase and its co-substrate DsrC. Using physiological, proteomic and biochemical studies of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough and mutants affected in DsrC functionality, we show that DsrC is also relevant for fermentative growth of this model organism and that it interacts directly with the soluble FlxABCD-HdrABC complex that links the NAD(H) pool with dissimilatory sulfite reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of patients with malformations of the female genital tract is a complex problem and there are different techniques described in the literature. The goal of all these techniques is the reconstruction of a neovagina that is anatomically similar to a vagina, with adequate length to facilitate sexual functioning and with the lowest risk of possible complications. The aim of this study is to describe the surgical technique for the reconstruction of a neovagina from an ileal segment without a vascular pedicle. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Description of a surgical technique developed in our tertiary university center in a patient with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome. RESULTS: The vaginoplasty surgery using ileal flap was performed in three steps. In the first part of the intervention a laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy was performed. The second step consisted of isolating the ileal segment, ileal anastomosis and preparing the ileal segment. After the isolated segment was prepared, it was repositioned in a vagina mold to configure the neovagina. Finally, the third step included the adaptation of the vaginal mold with the ileal mucosa to the vesicorectal space. CONCLUSION: Ileal vaginoplasty without a vascular pedicle is an option that can be used to reconstruct the vagina, because it provides an excellent tissue for vaginal replacement. This technique can be used in patients with genital malformations of the genital tract with absence or vaginal hypoplasia.

The noncubane [4Fe-4S] cluster identified in the active site of heterodisulfide reductase (HdrB) displays a unique geometry among Fe-S cofactors found in metalloproteins. Here we employ resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to probe structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of the noncubane cluster in HdrB from a non-methanogenic Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Dv) Hildenborough organism. The immediate protein environment of the two neighboring clusters in DvHdrB is predicted using homology modeling. We demonstrate that in the absence of substrate, the oxidized [4Fe-4S]3+ cluster adopts a "closed" conformation. Upon substrate coordination at the "special" iron center, the cluster core translates to an "open" structure, facilitated by the "supernumerary" cysteine ligand switch from iron-bridging to iron-terminal mode. The observed RR fingerprint of the noncubane cluster, supported by Fe-S vibrational mode analysis, will advance future studies of enzymes containing this unusual cofactor.

Abstract Concomitant use of a nasopharyngeal catheter is frequently used for oxygen supply during fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB). This is a procedure that presents possible complications that are not negligible. We demonstrate the case of a 61-year-old woman who underwent FOB due to a history of hemoptoic sputum. During the procedure, gastric rupture occurred with a large pneumoperitoneum and bilateral pneumothorax requiring immediate drainage of the air and an emergent laparotomy. This was probably a complication of the nasopharyngeal catheter. The knowledge of these complications is essential for their correct identification and treatment.

BACKGROUND: There has been a steady growth of non-surgical minimally invasive procedures. In parallel, an ever-broadening range of clinicians has been engaging with botulinum toxin (BoNT) for aesthetic procedures, with reportedly compound positive impact on social health and psychological well-being. OBJECTIVE: To identify and critically appraise current literature on the impact of BoNT injections into the upper face, as a sole treatment/combination with other modalities on facial aesthetics, psychological well-being, and quality-of-life. METHODS: An evidence-based review was performed using advanced search from PubMed, Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews, and Central Register of Controlled Trials databases . Only literature from inception to August, 2021 were considered. Eligibility criteria included human studies, FDA-approved BoNT applications, formulations, and dosages as a sole/multimodal approach; studies including patient-reported outcome tools psychometrically validated and facial lines-specific. Observer-reported outcome instruments were also considered for a thorough evaluation of outcomes. RESULTS: Based on data investigations and participant assessments, all studies showed statistically significant improvement in psychosocial well-being and quality-of-life domains with a trend for highest impact when multiple upper facial areas are treated in a multimodal approach. CONCLUSION: Aesthetic BoNT showed links to true health benefits for well-selected patients in addition to physical amelioration. However, the biological rational remains ambiguous. Well-designed controlled trials are needed, without pharmaceutical laboratories bias, in real clinical scenarios of patients paying for the interventions, often involving multiple areas with/without combined treatments. The persistence of positive outcomes following repetitive treatments provided by less experienced practitioners, potentially involving suboptimal patient selection and/or aesthetic results, warrants further investigation.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for vision. The key risk factor for the development and progression of this disease is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Implantable glaucoma drainage devices have been developed to divert aqueous humor from the glaucomatous eye as a means of reducing IOP. The artificial drainage pathway created by these devices drives the fluid into a filtering bleb. The long-term success of filtration surgery is dictated by the proper functioning of the bleb and overlying Tenon's and conjunctival tissue. To better understand the influence of the health condition of these tissues on IOP, we have developed a mathematical model of fluid production in the eye, its removal from the anterior chamber by a particular glaucoma implant-the PRESERFLO® MicroShunt-, drainage into the bleb and absorption by the subconjunctival vasculature. The mathematical model was numerically solved by commercial FEM package COMSOL. Our numerical results of IOP for different postoperative conditions are consistent with the available evidence on IOP outcomes after the implantation of this device. To obtain insight into the adjustments in the implant's hydrodynamic resistance that are required for IOP control when hypotony or bleb scarring due to tissue fibrosis take place, we have simulated the flow through a microshunt with an adjustable lumen diameter. Our findings show that increasing the hydrodynamic resistance of the microshunt by reducing the lumen diameter, can effectively help to prevent hypotony. However, decreasing the hydrodynamic resistance of the implant will not sufficiently decrease the IOP to acceptable levels when the bleb is encapsulated due to tissue fibrosis. Therefore, to effectively reduce IOP, the adjustable glaucoma implant should be combined with a means of reducing fibrosis. The results reported herein may provide guidelines to support the design of future glaucoma implants with adjustable hydrodynamic resistances.

Objective An evidence-based review on the role of botulinum toxin type A (BoNTA) on diverse cosmetic applications of interest to dental practitioners and allied specialities. In this context, to identify the cosmetic treatments that have an evidence-based rationale against areas requiring further research, with a view to assess the safety and efficacy of BoNTA.Data source and selection A comprehensive search was conducted using Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PubMed (Medline) electronic databases. Thirty-nine studies of variable quality were included. The Best Evidence Topics (BETs) Critical Appraisal Tool was used to facilitate the quality assessment of relevant studies.Data extraction Based on current level II evidence, BoNTA was safe and effective to improve facial contour, reduce volume and thickness of bilateral hypertrophic masseter. Conservative doses using a combined approach of BoNTA and hyaluronic acid was recommended as a safe and effective treatment for perioral enhancement supported by level II evidence. There was limited evidence, not higher than level III, to support BoNTA effectiveness for gummy smile associated to perioral musculature hyperactivity, while jawline sculpting targeting the platysma muscle had lower level IV evidence up to this date.Conclusion BoNTA has been widely used off-label for the investigated cosmetic orofacial conditions, with reports of 'good patient and practitioner satisfaction'. However, there is limited high-quality evidence to support the long-term safety and effectiveness of repetitive BoNTA injections. Additionally, no studies were found that provided a cost-effectiveness evaluation of BoNTA formulations against other current cosmetic interventions. Well-designed clinical trials, including long-term follow-up, would help to provide robust evidence-based recommendations for clinical practice, supporting BoNTA popularity, independently or in a combined approach.

Objective An evidence-based review on the safety and efficacy of botulinum toxin type-A (BoNTA) in orofacial conditions, focusing on the therapeutic applications and role of BoNTA as an adjuvant treatment.Data source and selection Data was collected using PubMed (Medline), Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials electronic databases. Having satisfied the search parameters, 32 studies for therapeutic applications and 26 for BoNTA as an adjunctive treatment were included. The quality of relevant studies was assessed using the Best Evidence Topics (BETs) Critical Appraisal Tool.Data extraction The highest level of evidence (LOE) behind BoNTA safety and efficacy was for wound healing and scar management in the orofacial surgery context, where BoNTA was presented as an adjunctive modality. Level-I evidence was controversial for temporomandibular disorders and bruxism. However, it showed promising results for painful temporomandibular disorders of myogenic origin refractory to conservative therapies, and to decrease muscle contraction intensity in sleeping bruxism. There was only one level-II study for persistent recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Data showed limited level-III evidence for orofacial pain conditions (temporomandibular joint recurrent dislocation and pain, burning mouth syndrome or atypical odontalgia), oral cancer complications, or as an adjuvant to maxillofacial and orthognathic surgeries. Benefits of BoNTA in prosthodontics had weak level-IV evidence. No evidence was found among the periodontology field.Conclusion There is growing evidence to support the safety and efficacy of BoNTA in the investigated orofacial pathological conditions, with high levels of satisfaction from the patient and clinician perspective. However, there are some inconsistencies and limited high-quality evidence available. Well-designed controlled clinical trials are necessary to evaluate long-term safety, efficacy and cost-effectiveness before BoNTA is widely adopted with irrefutable evidence-based clinical guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is severely affected by breast cancer (BC) and its treatment, particularly chemotherapy treatment. Psychological morbidity, illness perceptions, and self-efficacy for coping are important variables that impact QoL during the treatment of BC. The impact of cortisol on QoL has been poorly studied. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the contributing variables to QoL in women with BC receiving adjuvant chemotherapy, as well as the moderating role of cortisol in the relationship between treatment adverse effects and QoL. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 112 women with BC undergoing chemotherapy who answered the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire, the Supplementary Questionnaire Breast Cancer Module, the Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Cancer Behavior Inventory-Brief Version, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. In addition, salivary cortisol concentrations were also assessed. RESULTS: The strongest contributor to lower QoL was treatment adverse effects. The illness perception and the cancer stage also contributed to a lower QoL. Nadir cortisol moderated the relationship between adverse effects and QoL. CONCLUSION: Breast cancer chemotherapy and illness perceptions, even at the beginning of treatment, showed a great impact on QoL. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: It is important during chemotherapy to assess women's illness perceptions, as well as their stress levels to help women cope with the stress associated with treatment adverse effects. Monitoring cortisol is important as cortisol moderated the relationship between adverse effects and QoL. For those women struggling with stress, a reference to a mental health provider is warranted.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy that is the second leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, after cataract formation. A rise in the intraocular pressure (IOP) is considered to be a major risk factor for glaucoma and is associated with an abnormal increase of resistance to aqueous humour outflow from the anterior chamber. Glaucoma drainage devices have been developed to provide an alternative pathway through which aqueous humour can effectively exit the anterior chamber, thereby reducing IOP. These devices include the traditional aqueous shunts with tube-plate design, as well as more recent implants, such as the trabeculectomy-modifying EX-PRESS® implant and the new minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices. In this review, we will describe each implant in detail, focusing on their efficacy in reducing IOP and safety profile. Additionally, a critical and evidence-based comparison between these implants will be provided. Finally, we will propose potential developments that may help to improve the performance of current devices.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating psychiatric disease that is characterized by its clinical heterogeneity and complex pathophysiology. This complexity comes from the diversity of pathophysiological factors that have been proposed to be involved in the natural history of the disorder. Many theories on OCD pathology support inflammation as a pathophysiological factor, although studies are not consistent on the presence of a pro-inflammatory state among OCD patients. However, some pre-clinical animal studies suggest lipocalin-2 (LCN2), an analogous form of the acute-phase pro-inflammatory protein neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), may be involved in in the regulation of the stress response, which is thought to be disrupted in OCD. METHODS: Twenty-one OCD patients and 19 healthy subjects participated in this exploratory study. Levels of NGAL were assessed in the peripherous blood of all participants. Severity of disease was assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS). RESULTS: OCD patients exhibited significantly higher levels of NGAL when compared to healthy control subjects. No correlation was found between elevated levels of NGAL and severity of symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to report elevated levels of NGAL among OCD patients, adding evidence for a possible role of immune dysregulation in the pathophysiology of OCD.
