The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of parainfluenza 3 (PI3) virus antigen through histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) methods in sheep lung samples collected from Erzurum province, Türkiye. Between August and November 2017, 1462 sheep were dissected in the slaughterhouse and their lungs were examined macroscopically. In total, 100 of the lung samples with pneumonia were selected. Routine histopathological and IHC analyses of the collected lung tissues with pneumonia were performed. Pneumonia observed through macroscopical and histopathological examinations of the lung samples was classified as purulent-catarrhal bronchopneumonia (14.00%), fibrinous bronchopneumonia (23.00%), interstitial pneumonia (69.00%), granulomatous pneumonia (7.00%), verminous pneumonia (19.00%) and pulmonary adenomatosis (6.00%). Two or three types of pneumonia were observed in many of the same cases. The PI3 virus antigen positivity rate in the IHC analysis of sheep lung samples was 19.00%. In the IHC tracing, positivities were found mostly in the alveolar macrophages and cytoplasm of bronchial, bronchiolar and alveolar epithelial cells. As a result, the prevalence of PI3 virus in sheep in Erzurum province, Türkiye, was determined to be 19.00% using KLN BVB IHC method.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sepsis is one of the major problems encountered in intensive care units, causing organ damage and increasing mortality. Suberosin (SBR) is a type of coumarin with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The goal of this study is to explore the protective effects of SBR on the lungs in a rat model of sepsis. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were utilized in this study. A cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model was applied to induce sepsis. Rats were separated into six groups with nine animals in each group, including healthy control, SBR, CLP, and CLP + SBR (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) groups. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) enzyme activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) level were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß) were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Histopathological changes in the lungs were investigated with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). RESULTS: MDA levels and GSH and SOD enzyme activities were negatively affected in the CLP group, but SBR treatment ameliorated these oxidative stress parameters in the SBR1-3 groups (p< 0.05). The mRNA expressions of TNF-α and IL-1ß were increased in the CLP group, and SBR treatment decreased those expression levels in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). Organ damage and necrosis were seen in the CLP group and were alleviated in the SBR3 group. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of lung tissues demonstrated decreased TNF-α and IL-1ß immunopositivity in the SBR1-3 groups (p< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: SBR ameliorated sepsis-related lung injury in a dose-dependent manner. This compound has significant potential as a future agent in the treatment of sepsis.

Objective: To investigate the efficiency and rates of correction by hemiepiphysiodesis using 8-plate to manage genu valgum deformity in children with skeletal dysplasia. Methods: Eleven children with skeletal dysplasia (three female, eight male; mean age = 10.5 years; age range = 7-13) who underwent temporary hemiepiphysiodesis using 8-plates for genu valgum deformity were retrospectively reviewed. There were nine bilateral cases and two unilateral cases. The mean follow-up time from the index surgery to the final follow-up was 45 (ranging from 24 to 72) months. Radiographical assessment including preoperative and final follow-up measurements of joint orientation angles and mechanical axis deviation (MAD) were conducted. Results: Deformities were completely corrected in nine lower extremities (45%) and partially corrected in seven extremities (35%). In four extremities of two children with Morquio syndrome, MAD worsened. The correction rate of MAD was 1.25 ± 1.62 mm/mo. Conclusion: Though hemiepiphysiodesis using 8-plate requires a longer treatment period, it seems to be an effective treatment for correction of genu valgum in children with skeletal dysplasia. Objetivo: Investigar a eficiência e as taxas de correção da hemiepifisiodese usando placa-8 no tratamento da deformidade de geno valgo em crianças com displasia esquelética. Métodos: Foram avaliadas retrospectivamente 11 crianças com displasia esquelética (três meninas e oito meninos; idade média = 10,5 anos; faixa etária = 7-13) que foram submetidas à hemiepifisiodese temporária com placa-8 devido à deformidade do geno valgo. Havia nove casos bilaterais e dois casos unilaterais. O acompanhamento médio desde a cirurgia de implante até o acompanhamento final foi de 45 (variação de 24 a 72) meses. Foi feita avaliação radiográfica incluindo medidas de acompanhamento pré e pós-operatórias dos ângulos de orientação da articulação e desvio mecânico do eixo (MAD). Resultados: As deformidades foram completamente corrigidas em nove extremidades inferiores (45%) e parcialmente corrigidas em sete (35%). Em quatro extremidades de duas crianças com síndrome de Morquio, o MAD piorou. A taxa de correção do MAD foi de 1,25 ± 1,62 mm/mês. Conclusão: Embora a hemiepifisiodese com placa-8 necessite de um período de tratamento mais longo, a técnica parece ser um tratamento eficaz para a correção do geno valgo em crianças com displasia esquelética. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to reveal the effectiveness of Quercetin and Naringenin in preventing radiotherapy-associated submandibular gland injury. DESIGN: The study was conducted using 48 adult female Sprague Dawley rats. The rats were randomly assigned into six groups of eight animals each. Group 1 represented the control group. The rats received only Naringenin was regarded as Group 2, received only Quercetine was regarded as Group 3. The rats exposed to radiotheraphy at a dose of 15 Gy was regarded as Group 4. Rats in group 5 were received Naringenin at a dose of 50 mg/kg daily for one week prior to radiotheraphy exposition while rats in group 6 was received Quercetine at a dose of 50 mg/kg daily for one week prior to radiotheraphy. Rats were sacrificed after radiotheraphy and submandibular glands were dissected for biochemical and immunohistochemical evaluations. RESULTS: Quercetin and Naringenin were found to have protective effect against radiation-induced damage. Naringenin and Quercetin increased the levels of Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, Glutathione Peroxidase, Glutathione and Total antioxidant status while decreasing the levels of Myeloperoxidase and Total oxidant status. Also, these agents inhibited the expression of Tumor Necrosis Factor-α and 8-hydroxy 2-deoxyguanosine immunohistochemically. CONCLUSIONS: With their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, Naringenin and Quercetin exhibit histopathological, immunochemical, and biochemical protection against radiation-related submandibular gland injury. In addition, Quercetin was found to be superior to Naringenin in terms of this efficacy.

Background: Although eight-plates have been shown to be effective in correcting angular deformities of the knee, the literature is scarce regarding the efficiency of this method in treatment of children with LLD. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency, rates of correction and complications of epiphysiodesis using eight-plate in the management of children with leg length discrepancy (LLD). Methods: Eleven consecutive patients with LLD (7 boys, median age = 9, age range 6-11 years) who were treated by temporary epiphysiodesis using eight-plates were retrospectively reviewed and included in the study. The main indication for temporary epiphysiodesis was an LLD between 2 and 5 cm in all patients. LLD and lower limb alignment were examined on lower extremity weight-bearing radiography preoperatively and at skeletal maturity. Longitudinal correction rate was calculated. The final LLD was categorized as ''good result'' (final LLD < 1.5 cm), ''fair result'' (1.5-2 cm), and ''poor result'' (> 2 cm). Results: The mean treatment period with the eight-plate was 44 (min to max = 32-72) months, and the mean follow-up from the index surgery to the final follow-up was 62 (min to max = 39-106) months. The mean LLD was significantly reduced from 39 (range 25-50) mm preoperatively to 22.40 (range 6-55) mm postoperatively (p = 0.006). The mean longitudinal correction rate was found to be 0.48 mm/mo. Radiographic evidence of lower limb deformity in frontal and sagittal planes was determined in neither preoperative nor postoperative deformity analysis. No major complications were recorded. Conclusion: For the management of children with LLD of 2-5 cm, temporary hemiepiphysiodesis using the eight-plate seems to be an effective treatment with low complication rates.

ABSTRACT: Few studies have investigated the reliability of Reimers' hip migration percentage (RMP) in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Most studies on the topic reflected rating results of physician with a similar level of experience from the same expertise. This study aimed to determine the effect of clinician's experience and expertise on the intra-and inter-observer reliability of RMP.In this retrospective observational study, hip radiographs of children with CP were identified. 5 observers with different degrees of working experience from 3 different clinical fields, including orthopedics, radiology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, performed all RMP measurements. All measurements were repeated 6 weeks later by the same observers. Inter- and intra-observer reliability for RMP measurements were assessed using Intraclass Correlation Coeficient (ICC), calculated from 2 sets of repeated measurements on a subset of 50 hips, with a 6 week apart for each observer.Fifty hip radiographs of 25 children with CP (10 females and 15 males; mean age: 6 years; age range: 2-8 years) were examined in the current study. No significant differences existed in intra-and inter-observer measurements. Excellent intra-observer reliability was observed between the 2 separate measurements for each observer, with a mean ICC of 0.976 (range: 0.956-0.989; P < .001). Among 5 observers, inter-observer reliability was excellent for the 2 separate RMP measurements, with the mean ICC minimally increasing between the 2 measurement periods (mean ICC: 0.928, range: 0.838-0.979 and mean ICC: 0.936, range: 0.861-0.983, respectively) (P < .001).Clinician's experience and expertise may not affect inter-and intra-observer reliability of RMP measurements.

PURPOSE: Ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (IR) damage continues to be a serious infertility problem. The oxidative stress plays central role in the development of IR injuries. Activation of antioxidants decreases IR injuries; however, the efficacy of antioxidant agents remains controversial. Unfortunately, there has been no evidence for medicinal use of boric acid (BA) and propolis (Prop) on ovarian IR injury on rats so far. This study will provide to reveal the potential applications of the Prop and BA in ovarian IR therapy. METHODS: The Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into five groups: I-control, II-IR, 3 h of ischemia and 3 h of reperfusion, III and IV-a signal dose of oral BA (7 mg/kg) and Prop (100 mg/kg) alone 1 h before induction of IR, V-Prop and BA together 1 h before induction of IR. SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), GSH (glutathione), MPO (myeloperoxidase), MDA (malondialdehyde), and IL-6 (interleukin-6) levels were quantified by ELISA and the TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-α), 8-OHdG (8-hydroxylo-2'-deoxyguanosin) and Caspase-3 expressions were performed by immunohistochemical analyses. RESULTS: BA and Prop pretreatment significantly reduced MPO, MDA, and IL-6 levels and pathologic score in IR rats, with no effects in control group. These agents used in therapy also decreased TNF-α, 8-OHdG and Caspase-3 protein expressions increased by IR. Furthermore, BA and Prop combination showed significant ameliorative effects on ovary injury caused by IR through acting as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic agent. CONCLUSION: BA and Prop alone and especially in combination could be developed as therapeutic agents against ovary IR injury.

Abstract Introduction: Cisplatin is an antineoplastic agent widely used in the treatment of a variety of cancers. Ototoxicity is one of the main side-effects restricting the use of cisplatin. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective efficacy of gallic acid, in biochemical, functional and histopathological terms, against ototoxicity induced by cisplatin. Methods: Twenty-eight female Sprague Dawley rats were included. Rats were randomly assigned into four groups of seven animals each. Cisplatin group received a single intraperitoneal dose of 15 mg/kg cisplatin. Gallic acid group received intraperitoneal gallic acid at 100 mg/kg for five consecutive days. Cisplatin + gallic acid group received intraperitoneal gallic acid at 100 mg/kg for five consecutive days and a single intraperitoneal dose of 15 mg/kg cisplatin at 3rd day. A control group received 1 mL intraperitoneal saline solution for five consecutive days. Prior to drug administration, all rats were exposed to the distortion product otoacoustic emissions test. The test was repeated on the 6th day of the study. All rats were then sacrificed; the cochleas were removed and set aside for biochemical and histopathological analyses. Results: In cisplatin group, Day 6 signal noise ratio values were significantly lower than those of the other groups. Also, malondialdehyde levels in cochlear tissues were significantly higher, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were significantly lower compared to the control group. Histopathologic evaluation revealed erosion in the stria vascularis, degeneration and edema in the connective tissue layer in endothelial cells, impairment of outer hair cells and a decrease in the number of these calls. In the cisplatin + gallic acid group, this biochemical, histopathological and functional changes were reversed. Conclusion: In the light of our findings, we think that gallic acid may have played a protective role against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats, as indicated by the distortion product otoacoustic emissions test results, biochemical findings and immunohistochemical analyses.


Resumo Introdução: A cisplatina é um agente antineoplásico amplamente usado no tratamento de vários tipos de câncer. A ototoxicidade é um dos principais efeitos colaterais que restringem o uso da cisplatina. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a eficácia protetora do ácido gálico, em termos bioquímicos, funcionais e histopatológicos, contra a ototoxicidade induzida por cisplatina. Método: Vinte e oito ratas Sprague-Dawley foram incluídas. As ratas foram distribuídas aleatoriamente em quatro grupos de sete animais cada. O grupo cisplatina recebeu uma única dose intraperitoneal de 15 mg/kg de cisplatina. O grupo ácido gálico recebeu ácido gálico via intraperitoneal a uma dose de 100 mg/kg durante cinco dias consecutivos. O grupo cisplatina + ácido gálico recebeu ácido gálico via intraperitoneal a uma dose de 100 mg/kg durante cinco dias consecutivos e uma única dose intraperitoneal de 15 mg/kg de cisplatina no terceiro dia. O grupo controle recebeu 1 mL de solução salina via intraperitoneal por cinco dias consecutivos. Antes da administração do fármaco, todos os ratos foram expostos ao teste de emissões otoacústicas - produto de distorção. O teste foi repetido no sexto dia do estudo. Todos os ratos foram então sacrificados; as cócleas foram removidas e reservadas para análises bioquímicas e histopatológicas. Resultados: No grupo cisplatina, os valores da relação sinal-ruído do dia 6 foram significativamente mais baixos aos dos outros grupos. Além disso, os níveis de malondialdeído nos tecidos cocleares foram significativamente mais altos, e as atividades de superóxido dismutase e glutatione peroxidase foram significativamente mais baixas em comparação com o grupo controle. A avaliação histopatológica revelou erosão na estria vascular, degeneração e edema na camada de tecido conjuntivo em células endoteliais, comprometimento das células ciliadas externas e diminuição do número dessas células. No grupo cisplatina + ácido gálico, estas alterações bioquímicas, histopatológicas e funcionais foram revertidas. Conclusão: Tendo em vista os nossos achados, consideramos que o ácido gálico pode ter desempenhado um papel protetor contra a ototoxicidade induzida por cisplatina em ratas, conforme indicado pelos resultados do teste emissões otoacústicas - produto de distorção, achados bioquímicos e análises imuno-histoquímicas.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the comparative effectiveness of the use of single fluoroscopy versus double fluoroscopy during intramedullary nailing in the oblique position for intertrochanteric femur fractures in terms of surgery and radiation time. METHODS: Fifty-two patients (20 men, 32 women; average age: 78.2 years; range: 69-88 years) were included in the study. While double fluoroscopy was used for 25 patients, single fluoroscopy was used for the remaining 27 patients. Data of the preparation time between anesthesia and surgery, surgery time, radiation time, bleeding volume, postoperative collodiaphyseal angle between the fractures and intact parts, and the tip-apex distance (TAD) were compared. RESULTS: The surgery time in the double and single fluoroscopy groups averaged 34.48±8.92 minutes and 50.37±16.63 minutes, respectively (p<0.01). The radiation time was 42.72±16.00 seconds for the double-fluoroscopy group and 68.22±21.53 seconds for the single-fluoroscopy group (p<0.01). The surgical preparation time, bleeding volume, collodiaphyseal angle and TAD distance did not vary significantly between groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The use of double fluoroscopy in the oblique position in the surgical treatment of intertrochanteric femur fractures reduced the surgical time and the anesthesia time for patients, as well as the exposure to radiation, thereby also reducing the risk of complications.

PURPOSE: Berberine and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) are agents with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of berberine and CoQ10 on allergic rhinitis. METHODS: This study involved 30 Sprague-Dawley rats, and allergic rhinitis model was established with induction of ovalbumin. Rats were randomized into five groups. The first represented the control group, in which no allergy was established. The second represented the allergy group, in which allergy was induced but no treatment was given. In the remaining three groups, following induction of allergy, desloratadine at a dose of 10 mg/kg was given to Group 3, 100 mg/kg dose of berberine to Group 4, and 20 mg/kg dose of CoQ10 to Group 5. Nasal symptom scores, and plasma immunoglobulin-E, interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels were examined at the end of the study. Rats' nasal tissues were also subjected to histopathological immunohistochemical examination. RESULTS: Nasal symptom scores, and plasma immunoglobulin-E, IL-4, IL-13, MDA and NO levels increased significantly in rats with induced allergic rhinitis. Berberine and CoQ10 significantly reduced these elevated levels. CoQ10 was also found as effective as desloratadin in terms of nasal symptom scores and biochemical parameters. At histopathological examination, severe allergic inflammation was observed in rats from allergic rhinitis group. At all treatment groups, the histopathological changes were significantly improved and only a mild inflammation was determined. Also, immunochemistry showed a significant improvement in all three treatment groups. Coenzyme Q10 and berberine were both effective in suppressing allergy symptoms. CONCLUSION: We think that berberine and coenzyme Q10 can usefully be employed as therapy due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in an experimentally induced allergic rhinitis model.

Background: The rate of spontaneous normalization in type IIa hips is reported to be high, whereas dysplsia persists or worsens in 5%-10% of cases. Aims: To evaluate the natural course of type IIa hips using Graf's own perspective of physiological immaturity and maturational deficit. Study Design: A single center, retrospective cohort study. Methods: This was an institutional review board-approved retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with type IIa hip dysplasia at a single institution from 2012 to 2014. All patients included in the study had hip ultrasonography at about 6 weeks and 3 months of age. To assess reliability in α and ß angles, ultrasonography measurements were carried out on the same image individually by all observers. The α and ß angles were used as the main outcome measurements to evaluate hip maturation at the last follow-up. A receiver operating characteristics curve was drawn at the 3 month ultrasonography to evaluate the cut-off values for α and ß angles for persistent dysplasia. Results: Sixty-four patients and 88 affected hips (63% unilateral and 37% bilateral) were included. The mean age at diagnosis was 6.4±2.7 weeks. Fifty-four hips were type IIa(+) (physiologically immature) and 34 hips were type IIa(-) (maturational deficit) at the initial ultrasonography evaluation. Improvement to type I was seen in 52 type IIa(+) and 17 type IIa(-) hips. Receiver operating characteristic analyses showed that patients do well if the α angle was >55° (area under the curve: 0.86; p<0.001 for the left hip and area under the curve: 0.72; p=0.008 for the right hip). Conclusion: The cut-off α angle value of 55° on initial ultrasonography should be considered to prevent future dysplasia. An α angle <55° on the initial ultrasonography was an independent predictor of worsening sonographic findings.

Cisplatin (CP) is a widely used chemotherapeutic drug, effective against a variety of solid tumours, though its utility is limited due to its multiple organ toxicity. Zingerone (ZO), one of the most important components of dry ginger root, has several pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. This study aimed to investigate the ameliorative effect of ZO on CP-induced ovarian and uterine toxicity in female rats. The rats were subjected to a prophylactic oral treatment of ZO (25 and 50 mg/kg body weight) for seven days to measure the protective effect against ovarian and uterine toxicity induced by a single (i.p.) of CP (7 mg/kg body weight) on the first day whereas the rats were sacrificed on the eighth day. The results showed that ZO decreased the serum FSH hormone level, increased the serum E2 hormone level, and also maintained the ovarian and uterine histological architecture and integrity. In addition, ZO obviously increased the measured activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and GPx) and the GSH content, and significantly reduced MDA levels. ZO was able to reduce the levels of the inflammatory markers NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, COX-2 and iNOS in CP-induced ovarian and uterine damage. It also inhibited apoptosis and reduced oxidative DNA damage markers by the downregulation of caspase-3 and 8-OHdG expression coupled with an upregulated Bcl-2 level. The results indicate that ZO may be beneficial in ameliorating CP-induced oxidative stress, sex hormone imbalances, inflammation and apoptosis in ovarian and uterine tissues of female rats.

In this study, the effect of geraniol (50 mg/kg for 30 d), a natural antioxidant and repellent/antifeedant monoterpene, in a rat model of lead acetate-induced (500 ppm for 30 d) liver damage was evaluated. Hepatic malondialdehyde increased in the lead acetate group. Reduced glutathione unchanged, but glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase, as well as carboxylesterase activities decreased in geraniol, lead acetate and geraniol + lead acetate groups. 8-OhDG immunoreactivity, mononuclear cell infiltrations and hepatic lead concentration were lower in the geraniol + lead acetate group than the lead acetate group. Serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities increased in the Pb acetate group. In conclusion, lead acetate causes oxidative and toxic damage in the liver and this effect can reduce with geraniol treatment. However, we first observed that lead acetate, as well as geraniol, can affect liver carboxylesterase activity.

BACKGROUND: Congenital coxa vara (CCV) is a rare hip condition with few long-term studies. The purpose of this study was to assess clinical, radiographic, and functional outcomes after operative and nonoperative treatment of CCV, assess reliability of radiographic parameters, and investigate risk factors for recurrence after surgery. METHODS: Retrospective review was performed of all CCV patients treated at 1 institution from 1980 to 2010. In addition, patients were recalled for additional follow-up x-rays, modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), and gait analysis. Radiographic measurements [neck-shaft angle (NSA), head-shaft angle (HSA), Hilgenreiner-epiphyseal angle (HEA), and femoral neck length (FNL)] were assessed for reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify risk factors for recurrence after surgery. RESULTS: Forty-six hips in 32 patients were reviewed. Mean age at presentation was 5.4±4.9 years. Mean follow-up was 11.8±5.8 years. Valgus proximal femoral osteotomy was performed in 27 hips (20 patients). Initial deformity was greater in the operative group (NSA 90±17 degrees, HEA 68±19 degrees) versus nonoperative patients (NSA 122±19 degrees, HEA 34±14 degrees) (P<0.0001), but radiographic outcomes were similar at follow-up. Most nonoperative hips had normal FNL growth rates (80%), but resolution of varus NSA occurred in only 21%. In contrast, 56% of operative hips showed decreased FNL growth rates. Interobserver reliability was excellent for HEA (0.98), NSA (0.90), and FNL (0.89), and good for HSA (0.79). Repeat osteotomy was performed in 6 cases (22%). No significant predictors for recurrence were identified. At long-term follow-up for recalled patients, 72% had significantly abnormal gait, and 50% had fair-poor functional outcomes (mHHS<79). CONCLUSIONS: Valgus osteotomy corrects severe deformity in CCV with improved clinical and radiographic outcomes. HEA and NSA are the most reliable radiographic measurements of proximal femoral deformity in CCV. Recurrence is not uncommon, but no predictors were identified. Many patients have persistent gait abnormalities and functional impairment at long-term follow-up, regardless of prior treatment. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III-retrospective cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The rare Nievergelt syndrome (NS) is the most severe form of mesomelic dysplasia and is characterized by disproportionate shortness of the limbs. The aim of this case report was to describe the clinical and radiological features of a rare case of NS. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Here we describe a female patient originally presenting with bilateral hand, lower leg, and foot deformities at the age of 10 years old. In addition to the characteristic features of NS, this patient presented with finger-like projections on her heels, bilateral hand anomalies, and atypical facial features. She underwent concomitant bilateral tibial lengthening and deformity correction using external fixators due to severe bilateral lower leg deformities with shortness. At 10 years of age, this patient was able to walk independently with significant improvement in her ambulation. DISCUSSION: There is a clear gap in the literature regarding the orthopedic management of mesomelic limb deformities due to NS. No studies have been designed to illustrate surgical planning in the management of orthopedic deformities in this rare syndrome. CONCLUSION: Limb lengthening and deformity correction using an external fixator can be considered as a salvage method or alternative to amputation for patients with severe mesomelic limb deformities due to NS.

The current systemic treatments of the various solid tumors involve Cisplatin (CIS)-based chemotherapy. Due to its cytotoxicity, this approach is limited. Moreover, the safety of CIS is only discussed especially in breast and stomach cancers. Therefore, we, for the first time, explored the restorative efficacy of oleuropein (OLE), in stomach and lung injuries induced by CIS. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into eight groups: control CIS, OLE and CIS + OLE. Single dose of (7 mg/kg) CIS was administered intraperitoneally to CIS and CIS + OLE groups. After 24 h, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg OLE was given for three consecutive days to OLE and CIS + OLE groups. The 8-OH-dG, total oxidative/antioxidant status (TOS/TAS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were evaluated and histopathological analyses were performed on the studied tissues. The results indicated that CIS significantly increased 8-OH-dG, MDA and TOS levels and caused severe tissue damages. However, high dose of OLE induced a significant decrease in the 8-OH-dG, MDA levels, an increase in TAS levels and it restores CIS-induced tissue damages. We hope that the results of this study will provide an impetus for future studies on novel therapeutic strategies including the protective use of oleuropein in gastric and lung cancers due to chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Anterior knee pain (AKP) is one of the most common complications after tibia intramedullary surgery. We evaluated changes in patellar tendon length after tibia intramedullary nailing surgery using a transtendinous approach and assessed the importance of nail position in relation to the anterior tibial cortex and joint line. METHODS: Two surgeons blinded to patients' pain status measured both the knee Insall-Salvati and Caton-Deschamps indexes on 30° flexion lateral knee X-rays of 33 patients. Superior nail prominence (the distance from the proximal tip of the nail to the tibial plateau) and anterior nail prominence (the distance from the anterior tip of the nail to the anterior tibial cortex) were measured on the CT. RESULTS: Clinical assessment showed that 10 patients (30 %) had AKP at the last follow-up. HSS and Lysholm scores and the incidence of AKP were similar between patients whose IM nails were removed and those who still had them. HSS score, Insall-Salvati, and Caton-Deschamps indexes were significantly lower in the operated extremity than in the healthy limb at last follow-up. No association was demonstrated between AKP and nail position in relation to the anterior tibial cortex or tibial plateau. CONCLUSIONS: According to our study, although the patellar tendon shortened significantly on the affected side compared with the contralateral side, these measurements did not correlate with the presence or absence of pain. AKP and functional knee scores after tibia IM nailing using a transtendinous approach were not associated with nail position in relation to the anterior tibial cortex or tibial plateau. INTRODUCTION: The main goal of the treatment is the anatomical reduction of the ulna fracture and the radial head dislocation in acute and chronic Monteggia cases. Acute pediatric Monteggia lesions are generally treated non-surgically; however, the treatment of chronic Monteggia is challenging. The aim of this article is to share our experiences about treatment of neglected Monteggia lesion. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 6-year-old girl who underwent a surgery in our clinic for a missed Bado type-III Monteggia fracture-dislocation of the right elbow with concomitant posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy, which resolved spontaneously after the operation. The operation consisted of open reduction of the radial head, transverse ulnar osteotomy and fixation with an intramedullary Kirchner wire, and annular ligament repair without exploring PIN. The patient was seen in routine follow-up periods until the postoperative first year using plain radiographies. At 16th week follow-up, all functions of the PIN were returned. At first-year follow-up, full range of elbow motion was observed; plain radiographies showed radiocapitellar joint congruency, and Mayo Elbow Performance Index was one hundred. DISCUSSION: Treatment planning for chronic, neglected or missed Monteggia fractures is challenging. There is no consensus about the definitive treatment in the literature. CONCLUSION: We recommend anatomic and stable restoration of radiocapitellar joint by correcting ulna deformity. Radiocapitellar fixation and PIN exploration may not be necessary in all neglected Monteggia lesions.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred five hips of 61 AS patients (mean age: 41.3 ± 10.2 years) who underwent THA between 1997 and 2012 were included into the study. Dorr's classification of proximal femoral geometry, acetabular protrusio, bone ankylosis, acetabular protrusion, Brooker classification of heterotopic ossification (HO), Gruen and Charnley classifications of implant loosening were used in radiographic assessments. Patients were called back to return for an additional long-term follow-up for functional assessment. RESULTS: Cementless total hip arthroplasty was used in 83 hips (79%) and cemented TKA was used in 22 hips (21%). The overall rate of aseptic loosening was 7.6% at a mean follow-up of 5.4 years. Femoral loosening was statistically similar in cemented and cementless femoral components (14% vs. 8%, p = 0.089). Acetabular component loosening was statistically higher in patients with any degree of HO (p = 0.04). Regardless of the type of femoral implant (cemented or cementless), femoral component loosening was higher in Dorr's type C patients (p = 0.005). The average pre-operative HSS was 46.6 ± 16.3, and it improved to 80.7 ± 18.7 at last follow-up (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Revision incidence was similar in between ankylosed and non-ankylosed hips. While complication rates are high, significant functional improvement can be achieved after THA in patients with AS.
