Objective: To explore characteristics of clinical parameters and cytokines in patients with drug-induced liver injury (DILI) caused by different drugs and their correlation with clinical indicators. Method: The study was conducted on patients who were up to Review of Uncertainties in Confidence Assessment for Medical Tests (RUCAM) scoring criteria and clinically diagnosed with DILI. Based on Chinese herbal medicine, cardiovascular drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-infective drugs, and other drugs, patients were divided into five groups. Cytokines were measured by Luminex technology. Baseline characteristics of clinical biochemical indicators and cytokines in DILI patients and their correlation were analyzed. Results: 73 patients were enrolled. Age among five groups was statistically different ( P = 0.032). Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ( P = 0.033) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ( P = 0.007) in NSAIDs group were higher than those in chinese herbal medicine group. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in patients with Chinese herbal medicine (IL-6: P < 0.001; TNF-α: P < 0.001) and cardiovascular medicine (IL-6: P = 0.020; TNF-α: P = 0.001) were lower than those in NSAIDs group. There was a positive correlation between ALT ( r = 0.697, P = 0.025), AST ( r = 0.721, P = 0.019), and IL-6 in NSAIDs group. Conclusion: Older age may be more prone to DILI. Patients with NSAIDs have more severe liver damage in early stages of DILI, TNF-α and IL-6 may partake the inflammatory process of DILI.

Ischemic stroke is a common occurrence worldwide, posing a severe threat to human health and leading to negative financial impacts. Currently available treatments still have numerous limitations. As research progresses, extracellular vesicles are being found to have therapeutic potential in ischemic stroke. In the present study, the literature on extracellular vesicle therapy in animal studies of ischemic stroke was screened by searching databases, including PubMed, Embase, Medline, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. The main outcomes of the present study were the neurological function score, apoptotic rate and infarct volumes. The secondary outcomes were pro-inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-6. The study quality was assessed using the CAMARADES Checklist. Subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate factors influencing extracellular vesicle therapy. Review Man3ager5.3 was used for data analysis. A total of 20 relevant articles were included in the present meta-analysis. The comprehensive analysis revealed that extracellular vesicles exerted a significant beneficial effect on neurobehavioral function, reducing the infarct volume and decreasing the apoptotic rate. Moreover, extracellular vesicles were found to promote nerve recovery by inhibiting pro-inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6). On the whole, the present meta-analysis examined the combined effects of extracellular vesicles on nerve function, infarct volume, apoptosis and inflammation, which provides a foundation for the clinical study of extracellular vesicles.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) has emerged as a biomarker for mammary gland health and cow quality, being recognized as a significant allergenic protein. In this study, a novel flexible molecular imprinted electrochemical sensor by surface electropolymerization using pyrrole (Py) as functional monomer, which can be better applied to the detection of milk quality marker BSA. Based on computational results, with regard to all polypyrrole (PPy) conformations and amino-acid positions within the protein, the BSA molecule remained firmly embedded into PPy polymers with no biological changes. The molecular imprinted electrochemical sensor displayed a broad linear detection range from 1.0 × 10-4 to 50 ng·mL-1 (R2 = 0.995) with a low detection limit (LOD) of 4.5 × 10-2 pg·mL-1. Additionally, the sensor was highly selective, reproducible, stable and recoverable, suggesting that it might be utilized for the evaluation of milk quality.

BACKGROUND: Community engagement plays a vital role in global immunization strategies, offering the potential to overcome vaccination hesitancy and enhance vaccination confidence. Although there is significant backing for community engagement in health promotion, the evidence supporting its effectiveness in vaccination promotion is fragmented and of uncertain quality. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to systematically examine the effectiveness of different contents and extent of community engagement for promoting vaccination rates. METHODS: This study was performed in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A comprehensive and exhaustive literature search was performed in 4 English databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) and 2 Chinese databases (CNKI and Wan Fang) to identify all possible articles. Original research articles applying an experimental study design that investigated the effectiveness of community engagement in vaccination promotion were eligible for inclusion. Two reviewers independently performed the literature search, study selection, quality assessment, and data extraction. Discrepancies were resolved through discussion, with the arbitration of a third reviewer where necessary. RESULTS: A total of 20 articles out of 11,404 records from 2006 to 2021 were retrieved. The studies used various designs: 12 applied single-group pre-post study designs, 5 were cluster randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 3 were non-RCTs. These studies targeted multiple vaccines, with 8 focusing on children's immunization, 8 on human papillomavirus vaccine, 3 on hepatitis B virus vaccine, and 1 on COVID-19 vaccine. The meta-analysis revealed significant increases in vaccination rates both in pre-post comparison (rate difference [RD] 0.34, 95% CI 0.21-0.47, I2=99.9%, P<.001) and between-group comparison (RD 0.18, 95% CI 0.07-0.29, I2=98.4%, P<.001). The meta-analysis revealed that participant recruitment had the largest effect size (RD 0.51, 95% CI 0.36-0.67, I2=99.9%, P<.001), followed by intervention development (RD 0.36, 95% CI 0.23-0.50, I2=100.0%, P<.001), intervention implementation (RD 0.35, 95% CI 0.22-0.47, I2=99.8%, P<.001), and data collection (RD 0.34, 95% CI 0.19-0.50, I2=99.8%, P<.001). The meta-analysis indicated that high community engagement extent yielded the largest effect size (RD 0.49, 95% CI 0.17-0.82, I2=100.0%, P<.001), followed by moderate community engagement extent (RD 0.45, 95% CI 0.33-0.58, I2=99.6%, P<.001) and low community engagement extent (RD 0.15, 95% CI 0.05-0.25, I2=99.2%, P<.001). The meta-analysis revealed that "health service support" demonstrated the largest effect sizes (RD 0.45, 95% CI 0.25-0.65, I2=99.9%, P<.001), followed by "health education and discussion" (RD 0.39, 95% CI 0.20-0.58, I2=99.7%, P<.001), "follow-up and reminder" (RD 0.33, 95% CI 0.23-0.42, I2=99.3%, P<.001), and "social marketing campaigns and community mobilization" (RD 0.24, 95% CI 0.06-0.41, I2=99.9%, P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this meta-analysis supported the effectiveness of community engagement in vaccination promotion with variations in terms of engagement contents and extent. Community engagement required a "fit-for-purpose" approach rather than a "one-size-fits-all" approach to maximize the effectiveness of vaccine promotion. RESUMEN

Medical image segmentation is an important step in medical image analysis, especially as a crucial prerequisite for efficient disease diagnosis and treatment. The use of deep learning for image segmentation has become a prevalent trend. The widely adopted approach currently is U-Net and its variants. Moreover, with the remarkable success of pre-trained models in natural language processing tasks, transformer-based models like TransUNet have achieved desirable performance on multiple medical image segmentation datasets. Recently, the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and its variants have also been attempted for medical image segmentation. In this paper, we conduct a survey of the most representative seven medical image segmentation models in recent years. We theoretically analyze the characteristics of these models and quantitatively evaluate their performance on Tuberculosis Chest X-rays, Ovarian Tumors, and Liver Segmentation datasets. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and future trends in medical image segmentation. Our work can assist researchers in the related field to quickly establish medical segmentation models tailored to specific regions.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that individual lifestyles were associated with migraine. Yet, few studies focused on combined lifestyles, particularly in Chinese populations. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationships of a combined lifestyle index with migraine in Hong Kong Chinese women. METHODS: Baseline data from a cohort study named Migraine Exposures and Cardiovascular Health in Hong Kong Chinese Women (MECH-HK) were used for analysis. In total 3510 women aged 55.2 ± 9.1 years were included. The combined lifestyle index comprised eight lifestyle factors: smoking, physical activity, sleep, stress, fatigue, diet, body mass index, and alcohol. Each component was attributed a point of 0 (unhealthy) or 1 (healthy). The overall index was the sum of these points, ranging from 0 (the least healthy) to 8 points (the healthiest). Migraine was diagnosed by the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition. Additionally, for women with migraine, the data on migraine attack frequency (attacks/month) was collected. RESULTS: A total of 357 women with migraine (10.2%) were identified. The prevalence of migraine for the 0-3-point, 4-point, 5-point, 6-point, and 7-8-point groups were 18.0% (162/899), 10.9% (86/788), 6.6% (51/776), 6.0% (38/636), and 4.9% (20/411), respectively. In the most-adjusted model, compared to the 0-3-point group, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the 4-point, 5-point, 6-point, and 7-8-point groups were 0.57 (0.43-0.75), 0.33 (0.24-0.46), 0.30 (0.21-0.44), and 0.25 (0.15-0.41), respectively (all p < 0.001). For each component, migraine was significantly associated with sleep, stress, fatigue, and diet; but was unrelated to smoking, physical activity, body mass index, and alcohol. Among women with migraine, per point increase in the combined lifestyle index was associated with a reduced migraine attack frequency (ß = - 0.55; 95% confidence interval = - 0.82, - 0.28; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A combined lifestyle index was inversely associated with migraine and migraine attack frequency in Hong Kong Chinese women. Adhering to a healthy lifestyle pattern might be beneficial to the prevention of migraine attacks. Conversely, it is also plausible that women with migraine might have a less healthy lifestyle pattern compared to those without headaches.

Although previous studies have shown significant associations between individual lifestyles and metabolic syndrome, limited studies have explored the combined effect of lifestyles. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a combined lifestyle score was associated with metabolic syndrome incidence in Hong Kong Chinese women. This prospective cohort study included 1634 women (55.9 ± 8.6 years) without baseline metabolic syndrome, diabetes, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Eight lifestyle factors (smoking, physical activity, sedentary time, sleep, stress, fatigue, diet, and alcohol) were included by assigning 0 (unhealthy) or 1 point (healthy). The overall score was the sum of these points, ranging from 0 (the least healthy) to 8 points (the healthiest). Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed by the joint interim statement. During a 1.16-year follow-up, 179 (11.0%) new metabolic syndrome cases were identified. The incidences for the 0-3-point, 4-point, 5-point, and 6-8-point groups were 12.8% (79/618), 11.5% (42/366), 9.4% (29/309), and 8.5% (29/341), respectively. Compared to the lowest combined lifestyle score group, the highest group had a 47% reduced metabolic syndrome incidence, with an adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval of 0.53 (0.33-0.86) (p = 0.010). These findings indicate that a higher combined lifestyle score was associated with a lower metabolic syndrome incidence in this population.

BACKGROUND: The current study tried to elucidate the regulatory role of tumor cell-derived exosomes (Exos)-circ_0064516 in angiogenesis and growth of cervical cancer. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Related cirRNAs and downstream target genes were identified through bioinformatics analysis. Exos were isolated from cervical cancer cell line CaSki, followed by co-cultured with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Then, the roles of circ_0064516, miR-6805-3p, and MAPK1 in migration and angiogenesis of HUVECs were assayed. Furthermore, xenografted tumors were transplanted into nude mice for in vivo validation. RESULTS: In vitro assay validated highly expressed circ_0064516 in cervical cancer cells. Tumor cell-derived Exos carried circ_0064516 to HUVECs. circ_0064516 increased MAPK1 expression by binding to miR-6805-3p, thus enhancing migration and angiogenesis. Exos containing circ_0064516 also promoted tumorigenesis of cervical cancer cells in nude mice. CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed the oncogenic role of tumor cell-derived Exos carrying circ_0064516 in cervical cancer progression through miR-6805-3p/MAPK1.

Background: With advances in technology, teledermatology (TD) research has increased. However, an updated comprehensive quantitative analysis of TD research, especially one that identifies emerging trends of TD research in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era, is lacking. Objective: To conduct a scientometric analysis of TD research documents between 2002 and 2021 and explore the emerging trends. Methods: CiteSpace was used to perform scientometric analysis and yielded visualized network maps with corresponding metric values. Emerging trends were identified mainly through burst detection of keywords/terms, co-cited reference clustering analysis, and structural variability analysis (SVA). Results: A total of 932 documents, containing 27,958 cited references were identified from 2002 to 2021. Most TD research was published in journals from the "Dermatology" and "Health Care Sciences & Services" categories. American, Australian, and European researchers contributed the most research and formed close collaborations. Keywords/terms with strong burst values to date were "primary care," "historical perspective," "emerging technique," "improve access," "mobile teledermoscopy (TDS)," "access," "skin cancer," "telehealth," "recent finding," "artificial intelligence (AI)," "dermatological care," and "dermatological condition." Co-cited reference clustering analysis showed that the recently active cluster labels included "COVID-19 pandemic," "skin cancer," "deep neural network," and "underserved population." The SVA identified two reviews (Tognetti et al. and Mckoy et al.) that may be highly cited in the future. Conclusion: During and after the COVID-19 era, emerging trends in research on TD (especially mobile TDS) may be related to skin cancer and AI as well as further exploration of primary care in underserved areas.

Background: Adherence to a medication regimen is defined as taking the medication as directed by the prescriber. Adherence is critical to achieve the desired therapeutic outcomes. Medication adherence has not been examined in large outpatient populations since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A novel outpatient value-based pharmacy system (VPS) was used to collect adherence data from a large, outpatient population. The aim of this descriptive study was to analyze the reasons, medication classes, and diagnoses associated with nonadherence. Materials and Methods: Telepharmacist-documented adherence data from a large (n = 6,479) outpatient population that received remote consultation during the COVID-19 pandemic (August 1, 2020-November 28, 2022) were considered for this study. The adherence data were compiled within the VPS. Results: The overall rate of patients reporting at least one incident of nonadherence to their medication regimens was 21.5%. Medications used to treat hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia were least adhered to. Statins, beta-2 agonists, and corticosteroids were least adhered to. The most common reasons for nonadherence included knowledge gaps regarding therapy, forgetfulness, and side effects. Discussion: This represents the first descriptive analyses of adherence metrics in a large outpatient population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Polypharmacy, prevalence of diagnosis, and medication side effect profile may have contributed to the results observed. This study demonstrates the ability of a VPS to document key data to better inform the health care team. Elucidating adherence metrics in such populations may allow pharmacists and prescribers to identify subpopulations that require further education and management.

Breast remodelling is a major therapeutic choice in radical mastectomy. Breast reconstruction is regarded as a promising option for the treatment of breast cancer. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of Post mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) on postoperative wound complications in breast carcinoma. A comprehensive review of documents was conducted between the date of establishment and the 28th of August 2023. In all of the trials, patients were treated with breast cancer. The researchers chose 11 publications out of 8068 related studies. Two researchers examined these publications to satisfy the inclusion criteria. Among the 516 patients who had received radiation therapy in the course of the operation, 1772 had not received radiation therapy. The impact of radiation therapy and non-radiation therapy in breast cancer patients after breast reconstruction was reported in 8 studies, and the incidence of postoperative wound infection in non-radiation group was significantly lower (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.26-3.02 p = 0.003). In nine studies, There is not considered to have achieved statistical significance between radiation therapy and non-radiation treatment for post-operation wound dehiscence in breast cancer patients who had received chemotherapy (OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 0.70-3.72 p = 0.27). The results of six trials demonstrated that radiation therapy and non-radiation therapy had no statistical significance on post-operation haemorrhage in breast cancer patients (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.42-2.47 p = 0.96). The results of 7 trials demonstrated that radiation therapy and non-radiation therapy had no significant impact on the post-operation of skin necrosis (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.66-2.28 p = 0.53). Two trials demonstrated that those without radiation therapy were less likely than those who received radiation therapy in skin contracture in patients (OR, 7.24; 95% CI, 1.80-29.10 p = 0.005). Regarding the incidence of wound infection and cutaneous contraction was higher in the radiation group.

Background: Soft-tissue sarcomas during infancy are rare and understudied. With no data on this specific condition, we performed a retrospective study of infant-onset sarcomas based on a multi-institutional cohort in Beijing, China, collected over the past decade. We reviewed infantile soft-tissue sarcomas' clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. Materials and Methods: The patients with soft-tissue sarcoma diagnosed from 0 to 12 months in four primary children's hospitals in Beijing from January 2010 to December 2019 were evaluated. Results: Fifty-one patients were enrolled, including 31 males and 20 females. The median age at the diagnosis was five months (range, 0-12), and seven (13.7%) patients were diagnosed in the first month of their life. Histologically, twenty-five patients were diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), six were diagnosed with extraosseous Ewing sarcoma (EES), and twenty were diagnosed with nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft-tissue sarcoma (NRSTS). The treatment principles and details of RMS focused on reference to the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study Group (IRSG) protocols. For EES and NRSTS, chemotherapy was prescribed according to children's oncology group protocols. The five-year EFS/OS rates of RMS were 26.4% ± 19.5%/56.2 ± 17.8%, the five-year EFS/OS rate of EES was 50% ± 20.4%, and the five-year EFS/OS of NRSTS was 85.2% ± 9.8%/100%. Conclusions: Infant-onset soft-tissue sarcoma is heterogeneous. The primary location of the abdominal or pelvic cavity of RMS and EWS was at a later stage and had a poorer prognosis. Multimodal therapy resulted in successful disease control for the majority of patients. Standardization of treatment protocols will facilitate care for such challenging conditions.

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose would lead to liver toxicity and even acute liver failure in severe cases by triggering an inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Sesamin has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions in several animal disease models. In the present study, the effects and mechanisms of sesamin on APAP-induced acute liver injury (ALI) were explored. The results showed that pretreatment with sesamin significantly alleviated APAP-induced ALI, as indicated by decreased serum aminotransferase activities, hepatic pathological damages, and hepatic cellular apoptosis. But sesamin has no significant effects on the expression of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), APAP-cysteine adducts (APAP-CYS) production, and glutathione content in the liver of APAP-administered mice. Moreover, APAP-induced liver oxidative stress and inflammatory response also were remarkedly attenuated by sesamin, including reducing hepatic reactive oxygen species levels, promoting antioxidant generation, and inhibiting the expression of TNF-α and IL-1ß, as well as decreasing inflammatory cell recruitment. Notably, sesamin inhibited serum high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) releases and blocked hepatic activation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-interleukin 1 receptor-associated kinase 3-nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway in APAP-administered mice. These findings indicated that sesamin could mitigate APAP-induced ALI through suppression of oxidative stress and inflammatory response, which might be mediated by the deactivation of HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signaling in mice.

As an immune-response modifier, imiquimod can bind to Toll-like receptors on immune cells and enhance innate and adaptive immune responses, exerting potential antitumor and antiviral effects, which led to its approval by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of actinic keratosis, superficial basal cell carcinomas, and anogenital warts, and to its off-label use in treating many other benign and malignant dermatoses. Although topical administration of imiquimod has been considered well tolerated, an increasing number of cutaneous and noncutaneous side effects are being reported as its clinical applications expand. This review primarily focuses on rare cutaneous side effects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article to summarize the mechanism, diagnosis, and management of rare cutaneous side effects of imiquimod, which may help to heighten awareness among physicians, especially dermatologists, about potential imiquimod-induced cutaneous side effects.

The main objective of this study was to assess the in vitro antibacterial effectiveness of Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil (OGEO) against Shewanella putrefaciens. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of OGEO acting on S. putrefaciens were both 0.1% and OGEO could inhibit the growth of S. putrefaciens in a dose-dependent manner. The restraint of the biofilm growth of S. putrefaciens was found in the crystal violet attachment assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The disruption of cell membranes and exudation of contents in S. putrefaciens with OGEO treatment were observed by scanning electron microscopy, hemolysis and ATPase activity. The results demonstrated that OGEO had a positive inhibitory effect on the growth of S. putrefaciens, which primarily developed its antibacterial function against S. putrefaciens by disrupting the formation of biofilms and cell membranes. This study could provide a new method of inhibiting the spoilage of food in which the dominant spoilage bacteria are S. putrefaciens.

This meta-analysis is intended to evaluate the effect of both robotic and open-cut operations on postoperative complications of stomach carcinoma. From the earliest date until June 2023, a full and systemic search has been carried out on four main databases with keywords extracted from 'Robot', 'Gastr' and 'Opene'. The ROBINS-I instrument has been applied to evaluate the risk of bias in nonrandomized controlled trials. In these 11 trials, a total of 16 095 patients had received surgical treatment for stomach cancer and all 11 trials were nonrandomized, controlled trials. Abdominal abscesses were reported in 5 trials, wound infections in 8 trials, haemorrhage in 7 trials, wound dehiscence in 2 trials and total postoperative complications in 4 trials. Meta-analyses revealed no statistically significantly different rates of postoperative abdominal abscesses among patients who had received robotic operations than in those who had received open surgical procedures (OR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.25, 3.36; p = 0.89). The incidence of bleeding after surgery was not significantly different from that in both groups (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.69, 2.75; p = 0.37). Similarly, there was no significant difference between the two groups (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.52, 1.18; p = 0.24). No significant difference was found between the two groups (OR, 1. 28; 95% CI, 0.75, 2.21; p = 0.36). No significant difference was found between the two groups of patients who had received the robotic operation and those who had received the surgery after the operation (OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.78, 1.66; p = 0.49). Generally speaking, this meta-analysis suggests that the use of robotics does not result in a reduction in certain postsurgical complications, including wound infections and abdominal abscesses. Thus, the use of a microinvasive robot for stomach carcinoma operation might not be better than that performed on the surgical site after the operation. This is a valuable guide for the surgeon to select the operative method.

Background Follicular mycosis fungoides is a distinct variant of mycosis fungoides with a broad clinical spectrum. Recently, many studies have indicated that follicular mycosis fungoides should be divided into different subtypes with disparate prognoses. Objective To define the clinicohistopathologic features and outcomes of follicular mycosis fungoides and to identify risk factors that may be related to the prognosis of Chinese patients with follicular mycosis fungoides. Materials and methods We conducted a single-centre retrospective study and reviewed the clinical, histopathologic and immunophenotypic data of 12 patients diagnosed with follicular mycosis fungoides between 2009 and 2020 in the Department of Dermatology of West China Hospital of Sichuan university. Results A total of 12 patients (seven males and five females) with a mean age of 30 ± 14 years (age range 16-55 years) were included. Scalp and face were the most common involved sites (100%). Follicular papules, acneiform lesions, plaques, and nodules, were the main clinical presentations. Histopathological findings were consistent with the classic manifestations of follicular mycosis fungoides, including folliculotropism, perifollicular and intrafollicular lymphocytic infiltrates and mucinous degeneration. Interferon α-1b was the most common treatment. Four patients died of follicular mycosis fungoides in three years. Notably, immunohistochemical analysis revealed a decreased number of CD20+ cells in the deceased patients. Limitations This is a retrospective evaluation with a small number of cases; further prospective studies are warranted to support our inferences. Conclusion Our patients were much younger than in previous studies. The observed difference in this cohort may be explained by race, in addition to the limited number of cases. A decreased number of B cells might be associated with a poor prognosis, and more studies are necessary to discover the role of B cells in follicular mycosis fungoides as well as in mycosis fungoides.

Hypoxia is one of the major causes of cancer resistance and metastasis. Currently, it is still lack of convenient ways to simulate the in vivo hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME) under normoxia in vitro. In this study, based on multi-polymerized alginate, we established a three-dimensional culture system with a core-shell structure (3d-ACS), which prevents oxygen diffusion to a certain extent, thereby simulating the hypoxic TME in vivo. The cell activity, hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) expression, drug resistance, and the related gene and protein changes of the gastric cancer (GC) cells were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The results demonstrated that the GC cells formed organoid-like structures in the 3d-ACS and manifested more aggressive growth and decreased drug responses. Our study provides an accessible hypoxia platform in the laboratory with moderate configuration and it may be applied in studies of the hypoxia-induced drug resistances and other preclinical fields.

Introduction: As the world becomes increasingly urbanized and human-nature contact declines, urban greenspace's impact on human health has garnered growing interest across academic disciplines. Various definitions and multiple indicators of greenspace have been utilized, with most studies finding an overall positive association between greenspace and health. Nevertheless, studies directly comparing how different greenspace indicators impact different disease types have been limited. Moreover, to verify the robustness of conclusions drawn, studies should compare multiple measures of greenspace across various spatial scales. Thus, a more comprehensive analysis is necessary to help inform future study design, especially in determining which greenspace indicators would be most useful in data-limited areas. Methods: Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, is West China's largest and most urban city, being typical of other large cities in lower to middle-income countries (LMICs). With twenty county-level jurisdictions spanning various degrees of urbanization, Chengdu's landscape heterogeneity and large population make it ideal for studying greenspace's impact on public health. This study took Chengdu as a case study to assess the association and potential impact of three traditional measures of greenspace (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Enhanced Vegetation Index, and Fractional Vegetation Cover) and urban ratio (% of population being urban) on hospitalization rates and medical expenses paid for three major disease categories (circulatory system diseases, neoplasms, and respiratory system diseases). Results and discussion: We found greenspace did have a significant impact on public health, but this relationship differed by disease type. Greenspace exhibited significant positive association with respiratory diseases, but insignificant negative associations with the other disease categories. Urban ratio showed significant negative association with greenspace abundance. The higher the urban ratio (e.g., less greenspace), the more money was paid on medical expenses. This relationship was found not only in terms of urban ratio being positively correlated with medical expenses, but also in that all three greenspace indicators were negatively correlated with medical expenses. Consequently, in future health outcome studies, urban ratio could be an acceptable negative indicator of greenness in LMICs where urban ratio is likely to imply less greenness.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has unique medicinal value and can be used to treat colds and cold-related diseases. The chemical composition and antibacterial activity of ginger essential oil (GEO) against Shewanella putrefaciens were determined in the present study. Zingiberene, α-curcumene, and zingerone were the main active compounds of GEO. GEO displayed significant antibacterial activity against S. putrefaciens, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 2.0 and 4.0 µL/mL, respectively. Changes in intracellular ATP content, nucleic acid and protein structure, exopolysaccharides (EPS) content, and extracellular protease production indicated that GEO disrupted the membrane integrity of S. putrescens. At the same time, changes in biofilm metabolic activity content and the growth curve of biofilm showed that GEO could destroy the biofilm. Both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) observations confirmed that GEO destroyed the cell membrane and lead to the leakage of the constituents. The above results indicate that GEO entered the cells via contact with bacterial membranes, and then inhibited the growth of S. putrefaciens and its biofilms by increasing membrane permeability and inhibiting various virulence factors such as EPS. The findings showed that GEO could destroy the structure of cell membrane and biofilm of tested S. putrefaciens, indicating its potential as a natural food preservative.
