BACKGROUND: Chinese topography appears a three-rung ladder-like distribution of decreasing elevation from northwest to southeast, which is divided by two sloping edges. Previous studies have reported that prevalence of thyroid diseases differed by altitude, and geographical factors were associated with thyroid disorders. To explore the association between three-rung ladder-like regions and thyroid disorders according to unique Chinese topographic features, we conducted an epidemiological cross-sectional study from 2015-2017 that covered all 31 mainland Chinese provinces. METHODS: A total of 78,470 participants aged ≥ 18 years from a nationally representative cross-sectional study were included. Serum thyroid peroxidase antibody, thyroglobulin antibody, and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels; urine iodine concentration; and thyroid volume were measured. The three-rung ladder-like distribution of decreasing elevation from northwest to southeast in China was categorized into three topographic groups according to elevation: first ladder, > 3000 m above sea level; second ladder, descending from 3000-500 m; and third ladder, descending from 500 m to sea level. The third ladder was further divided into groups A (500-100 m) and B (< 100 m). Associations between geographic factors and thyroid disorders were assessed using linear and binary logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Participants in the first ladder group were associated with lower thyroid peroxidase (ß = -4.69; P = 0.00), thyroglobulin antibody levels (ß = -11.08; P = 0.01), and the largest thyroid volume (ß = 1.74; P = 0.00), compared with the other groups. The second ladder group was associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (odds ratio = 1.30, 95% confidence interval [1.18-1.43]) and subclinical hypothyroidism (odds ratio = 0.61, 95%confidence interval [0.57-0.66]) (P < 0.05) compared with the first ladder group. Group A (third ladder) (500-100 m) was associated with thyroid nodules and subclinical hypothyroidism (P < 0.05). Furthermore, group B (< 100 m) was positively associated with autoimmune thyroiditis, thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibody positivity, and negatively associated with overt hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, and goiter compared with the first ladder group(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: We are the first to investigate the association between different ladder regions and thyroid disorders according to unique Chinese topographic features. The prevalence of thyroid disorders varied among the three-rung ladder-like topography groups in China, with the exception of overt hyperthyroidism.

RESUMEN

Spexin, also identified as neuropeptide Q (NPQ), is a 14 amino acid peptide discovered by bioinformatic methods. It has a conserved structure in many species and is widely expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. It has an associated receptor, galanin receptor 2/3 (GALR2/3). Mature spexin peptides can exert various functions by activating GALR2/3, such as inhibiting food intake, inhibiting lipid absorption, reducing body weight, and improving insulin resistance. Spexin is expressed in the adrenal gland, pancreas, visceral fat, and thyroid, with the highest expression in the adrenal gland, followed by the pancreas. Physiologically, spexin and insulin interact in pancreatic islets. Spexin may be one of the regulators of endocrine function in the pancreas. Spexin is a possible indicator of insulin resistance and it has a variety of functional properties, here we review its role in energy metabolism.

The blocking of gastric mucosal intestinal metaplasia (IM) has been considered to be the pivotal method to control the occurrence of gastric cancer. However, there is still a lack of effective therapeutic agent. Here, we developed mucus-penetrating liposome system by covering surface with polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains (hydrophilic and electroneutral mucus-inert material) to co-delivery candidate drugs combination. Then studied the impact on the transmucus performance of different conformations, which were constructed by controlling the density of PEG chains on the surface. The results showed that the particle size of 5%PEG-Lip was less than 120 nm, the polydispersity index was less than 0.3, and the surface potential tended to be neutral. The D value (long chain spacing) of 5% PEG-Lip was 3.25 nm, which was close to the RF value (diameter of spherical PEG long chain group without external force interference) of 3.44 nm, and the L value (extended length) was slightly larger than 3.44 nm. In this case, PEG showed mushroom-brush transitional conformation on the surface of liposomes. This conformation was not only promoted stable delivery, but also shielded the capture of mucus more favorably, leading to a more unrestricted transportation in mucus. The further in vivo experimental results demonstrated the rapid distribution of liposomes, which gradually appeared both in the superficial and deep glandular of mucosa and gland cells at 1 h and absorbed into the cell cytoplasm at 6 h. The 5% PEG-Lip with the mushroom-brush transitional configuration recalled abnormal organ index and improved inflammation and intestinal metaplasia. The modified PEG conformation assay presented here was more suitable for liposomes. This PEG-modified liposome system has potential of mucus-penetrating and provides a strategy for local treatment of gastric mucosal intestinal metaplasia.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Schisandra chinensis (called bei-wuweizi in Chinese, S. chinensis) and Schisandra sphenanthera (called nan-wuweizi in Chinese, S. sphenanthera) are two highly similar plants in the Magnoliaceae family. Their dried ripe fruits are commonly used as traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of coughs, palpitation, spermatorrhea, and insomnia. They also are traditionally used as tonics in Russia, Japan, and Korea. AIM OF THE REVIEW: S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera are similar in appearance, traditional applications, ingredient compositions, and therapeutic effects. This review, therefore, aims to provide a systematic insight into the botanical background, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, quality control, and toxicology of S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera, and to explore and present the similarities and differences between S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search regarding S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera was collected by using electronic databases including PubMed, SciFinder, Science Direct, Web of Science, CNKI, and the online ethnobotanical database. RESULTS: In the 2020 Edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP), there were 100 prescriptions containing S. chinensis, while only 11 contained S. sphenanthera. Totally, 306 and 238 compounds have been isolated and identified from S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera, respectively. Among these compounds, lignans, triterpenoids, essential oils, phenolic acid, flavonoids, phytosterols are the major composition. Through investigation of pharmacological activities, S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera have similar therapeutic effects including hepatoprotection, neuroprotection, cardioprotection, anticancer, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and hypoglycemic effect. Besides, S. chinensis turns out to have more effects including reproductive regulation and immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antitussive and antiasthmatic, anti-fatigue, antiarthritic, and bone remodeling effects. Both S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera have inhibitory effects on CYP3A and P-gp, which can mediate metabolism or efflux of substrates, and therefore interact with many drugs. CONCLUSIONS: S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera have great similarities. Dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans are regarded to contribute to most of the bioactivities. Schisandrin A-C, schisandrol A-B, and schisantherin A, existing in both S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera but differing in the amount, are the main active components, which may contribute to the similarities and differences. Study corresponding to the traditional use is needed to reveal the deep connotation of the use of S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera as traditional Chinese medicine. In addition, a joint study of S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera can better show the difference between them, which can provide a reference for clinical application. It is worth mentioning that the inhibition of S. chinensis and S. sphenanthera on CYP3A and P-gp may lead to undesirable drug-drug interactions.

The essential oil from Vladimiriae Radix (VEO) is a medicinal natural product with anti-ulcer activity. A novel gastroretentive drug delivery system was developed by preparing the hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (HP-ß-CD) inclusion complex incorporated into chitosan nanoparticles (V-CD/NPs), to improve the bioavailability of VEO and its protective effect on gastric mucosa. The optimum preparation process of V-CD/NPs was obtained by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken response surface methodology. The resulting V-CD/NPs gained a suitable positive potential and small particle size, and showed stability in simulated gastric fluid, whose morphology and in vitro drug release profiles had a pH-sensitivity. Besides, V-CD/NPs was proved to strongly bind with mucin, and in vivo imaging revealed that it could be retained in the stomach for more than 8 h. The results of drug concentration in gastric tissues showed that the sequential loading of inclusion complex/nanoparticles promoted the local absorption of VEO in gastric tissues, which was favorable to reach the effective therapeutic concentration in the lesioned mucosa area. In comparison to VEO and V-CD, the callback effect of V-CD/NPs on 1L-1ß, 1L-6, TNF-α, NF-κB, MDA and SOD was comparable to cimetidine, and V-CD/NPs outperformed in gastric mucosal protection. Therefore, the gastroretentive drug delivery system developed in our study effectively enhanced the anti-ulcer activity of VEO, which could be a promising strategy for the prevention and treatment of the acute gastric mucosal injury.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Aucklandiae Radix (AR) and Vladimiriae Radix (VR), as commonly used traditional Chinese herbal medicine, were widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. The two herbal medicines were warm, pungent and bitter. They entered the spleen, stomach, large intestine and gallbladder meridians, and had the effect of promoting qi circulation to relieve pain. It is usually used for chest and hypochondrium, abdominal fullness and pain, tenesmus, indigestion, and warming the middle to harmonize the stomach in clinically. AIM OF THIS REVIEW: To provide a reference for the identification of traditional use, the material basis of efficacy and preclinical research between AR and VR, this review systematically summarized the similarities and differences in ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and modern pharmacology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature information was collected systematically from the electronic scientific databases, including PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Geen Medical, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, as well as other literature sources, such as classic books of herbal medicine, master's thesis, doctoral thesis. RESULTS: In the plateau areas of Sichuan Province, VR used to be regarded as substitute or local habit for AR, which is regularly used for chest, abdominal fullness and pain, diarrhea, and other related diseases. In Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP) 2020 edition, 145 prescription preparations with AR were collected, such as Xianglian Wan, Muxiang Shunqi Wan, Liuwei Muxiang San. However, only one prescription preparation (Jiuxiang Zhitong Wan) contained VR. Additionally, 237 and 254 chemical components were separately isolated and identified from AR and VR, 69 kinds of compounds were common among them, and the significant differences were presented in sesquiterpene lactones, monoterpenoids, triterpenoids and phenylpropanoids. Moreover, Costunolide (COS) and Dehydrocostus lactone (DEH), two main research objects of modern pharmacology, showed multiple pharmacological activities. Not only could they inhibit the activity of some cancer cells (such as breast cancer and leukemia cells), but they regulated the levels of various inflammatory factors (including TNF-α, NF-κB, IL-1ß, IL-6) and repressed the growth and reproduction of various microorganisms (like Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus aureus). CONCLUSION: COS and DEH as the common active components, provide a certain basis for local medicine about the substitution of VR for AR in Sichuan province of China in the past. In addition, the sesquiterpenoids are the main common compounds in AR and VR by collecting and collating a large number of literature and various data websites. Furthermore, AR and VR have significant differences in ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry, especially in sesquiterpene lactones, monoterpenoids, triterpenoids and phenylpropanoids, and are probably viewed as reference of a separate list of AR and VR in Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

RNA methyltransferase NSUN2 is involved in cell proliferation and invasion in a variety of tumors. However, the expression, function, and mechanism of NSUN2 in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) remains unknown. We used a bioinformatics database, polymerase chain reaction, cell culture and transfection, immunohistochemistry, cell proliferation assay, wound healing experiments, transwell assays, western blotting, RNA-seq detection, dual-luciferase reporter assay, in vivo experiments, and a dot blot assay to evaluate the role of NSUN2 in HPSCC. NSUN2 mRNA and protein were highly expressed in HPSCC; NSUN2 knockdown in vitro and in vivo decreased cell proliferation and invasion. Studies have shown that TEAD1, a transcription factor, may act downstream of NSUN2 in HPSCC. NSUN2 was found to promote the proliferation and invasion of HPSCC by upregulating TEAD1 in an 5-methylcytosine-dependent manner, thereby representing an oncogene and potential new target for treating HPSCC.

BACKGROUND: The intestinal flora imbalance and metabolic disorders are closely related to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). As a commonly used herb for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, Vladimiriae Radix (VR) has been used for hundreds of years, and its main active ingredients are costunolide (COS) and dehydrocostus lactone (DEH). Clinical usage habits and previous studies have shown that the processed Vladimiriae Radix (pVR) seems to be more suitable for treating bowel disease than the raw Vladimiriae Radix (rVR), but there is still no relevant comparative study. PURPOSE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of rVR and pVR on UC by analyzing the intestinal flora, metabolomics and tissue distribution. METHODS: UC rat models were established to investigate the anti-inflammatory activities of rVR and pVR by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and to study their regulation of intestinal flora and metabolism by 16s rRNA gene analysis and Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Moreover, the distribution of COS and DEH in UC mouse tissues were also observed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS). RESULTS: rVR and pVR reduced tissue damage and the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, IL-10, TGF-ß and MPO, especially pVR. 16s rRNA gene analysis showed that rVR superior in ameliorating species evenness and restoring the abundance of Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae, while pVR is better at increasing the richness and the abundance of Prevotellaceae. Metabolomics analysis suggested that rVR regulates the ß-alanine, pantothenic acid and coenzyme A biosynthesis, but pVR regulates more abundant metabolic pathways. The tissue distribution data indicated the accumulation of COS and DEH in the gastrointestinal tract. CONCLUSION: rVR and pVR had obvious therapeutic effect on UC. The potential mechanisms might be regulating abnormal metabolism, affecting the diversity and structure of intestinal flora, and accumulation of COS and DEH in colon.

OBJECTIVE: To use droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) to detect human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx (SCCLHP) and to analyze its association with the prognosis of patients with HPV. METHODS: We used ddPCR for HPV detection in 114 patients with SCCLHP; clinical data were collected, and the patients were followed-up for prognosis analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to complete the analysis of risk factors. This clinical study was registered (clinical trial registration no. ChiCTR2000033032). RESULT: Of the total cases, 15.79% (18/114) were HPV-positive and 8 (8/18, 44.4%) patients had tumors with HPV-16. There was a significant correlation between HPV-16 and the T classification and Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) (P = 0.025 and 0.036, respectively). The 3-year overall survival rates in the HPV-positive and HPV-negative patients were 39.8% and 48.6% (P = 0.776), respectively. In the univariate analysis, HPV infection was not associated with the relative risk of progression (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.109, P = 0.778). Patients with laryngeal carcinoma (HR = 1.805, P = 0.037), no alcohol consumption (HR = 0.430, P = 0.009), well-differentiated tumors (HR = 2.570, p = 0.006), TNM I-II (HR = 2.482, P = 0.003), and no lymph node metastasis (HR = 2.615, P = 0.001) had better prognoses. In the multivariate analysis, tumor location (HR = 3.044, P = 0.001), alcohol consumption (HR = 0.474, P = 0.022), tumor differentiation (HR = 2.131, P = 0.030), and lymph node metastasis (HR = 4.179, P < 0.001) were independent predictors of better overall survival in SCCLHP. CONCLUSION: ddPCR is an advanced technology that can accurately diagnose HPV infection with high specificity and sensitivity. The HPV infection rate in SCCLHP was low, and there was no significant difference in the prognosis of SCCLHP.

BACKGROUND: Hypopharyngeal carcinoma is characterized by a high degree of malignancy. The most common pathological type is squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC). Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum, CDDP) is one of the most widely used chemotherapeutic drugs nowadays and cisplatin resistance is a major problem in current treatment strategies. Clinical researchers have reported that high autophagy levels often caused insensitivity to chemotherapy, a common phenomenon that greatly reduces the therapeutic effect in cisplatin- resistant tumor cell lines. 3-methyladenine (3-MA), an inhibitor of PI3K, plays a vital role in forming and developing autophagosomes. Therefore, we speculate that the use of 3-MA may reduce cisplatin resistance in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC). METHODS: Part I: Cisplatin-resistant FaDu cell line (Human hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma cells) was established and cultured. Cell counting kit-8 was used to detect drug resistance. An inverted microscope was used to observe the morphological changes at different concentrations, then the survival rate was calculated. After MDC staining, the autophagic vacuoles were observed by fluorescence microscopy. The expression of Beclin1 from each group was confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blot method. Part II: 3-MA was applied for cisplatin-resistant cells intervention, Beclin1 was knocked down by plasmid transfection. Cell cycle was detected using flow cytometry assay, apoptosis with necrosis was detected by staining with propidium iodide (PI). CCK-8 was used to observe the cell survival rate in each group. The expression of autophagy-related protein Beclin1, LC3I, LC3II, Atg-5 and P62 in each group was verified by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Cisplatin-resistant FaDu cell line can be stably constructed by cisplatin intervention. Compared with normal group, autophagy and its related protein Beclin1 expression were enhanced in cisplatin resistant FaDu cells. Autophagy inhibition group showed significant cell cycle changes, mainly manifested by G1 arrest, increased apoptosis rate and significantly decreased survival rate at 24h level. The number of autophagy vacuoles were significantly reduced in the 3-MA group. Furthermore, Western blot showed that expression of Beclin1, lc3-I, lc3-II, atg-5 protein decreased significantly after 3-MA intervention, while the expression of p62 upregulated, which also confirmed autophagy flow was blocked. CONCLUSION: Our work confirmed that enhanced autophagy is an important cause of cisplatin resistance in FaDu cells. The use of 3-MA can significantly reduce autophagy level and arresting its cell cycle, promote apoptosis and reverse the cisplatin resistance condition, this effect is partly mediated by inhibition of Beclin-1 expression. The objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility and efficacy of recurrent laryngeal nerve repair by transplantation of co-cultured Schwann cells and neural stem cells (NSCs) in laminin-chitosan-poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (laminin-chitosan-PLGA) nerve conduits in rats. A laminin-chitosan-PLGA conduit was used in a rat recurrent laryngeal nerve transection model. The rat recurrent laryngeal nerve was dissected to generate a 5 mm defect. Then, a laminin-chitosan-PLGA nerve conduit with or without Schwann cells and NSCs in the lumen was transplanted into the defect. A total of 96 female rats were randomised into six groups: co-culture of NSCs and Schwann cells in the nerve conduit group (CO), Schwann cells only in the nerve conduit group (SC), neural stem cells only in the nerve conduit group (NSC-only), nerve conduit group (null), autologous nerve graft group (autograft) and sham operation group (sham). Regenerated nerves were evaluated by histological and functional assessment at 8 and 12 weeks after surgery. The diameter and area of the regenerated myelin sheath, as well as the secretion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor in laryngeal muscle or regenerated nerve tissue in the CO group, were significantly better than they were in the SC, NSC-only and null groups (all P values < 0.05). Immunofluorescence showed that the CO group had significantly more neurofilament-200 immunoreactive and S-100 immunoreactive fibres than the SC, NSC-only and null groups (all P values < 0.05). The performance of the CO groups and autograft groups was found to be similar by laryngoscopy. Arytenoid cartilage motion recovery in these two groups was significantly better than it was in the other groups (all P values < 0.05). Our results indicated that co-culture of Schwann cells and NSCs in laminin-chitosan-PLGA conduits might promote injured nerve regeneration. This method might be a promising alternative for defective nerve repair.

An easy-to-implement strategy of differential flow modulation for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography was innovated. With this approach, an independent auxiliary pneumatic control device for flow modulation was not a prerequisite. The strategy involved splitting the carrier gas stream into two separate streams before reaching the inlet embodiment. One stream was employed as a mobile phase for chromatographic separation. The other stream, for flow modulation, was routed to one of the ports of a three-way solenoid valve. The modulation stream flowed onward to a fluidic path and a T-junction that joined the primary and secondary dimension columns. With this arrangement and depending on the configuration of the three-port valve, the analytical platform can be operated in three different modes: bypass stop-flow, vent stop-flow, and quasi-stop flow. Quasi-stop-flow mode was demonstrated to have a significantly better chromatographic performance, as demonstrated in various types of real-life petroleum samples such as gasoline and light cycle oil. In the light cycle oil sample, a respectable separation between compound classes was achieved with peak width at half height of 34 ms or less for alkanes on a second dimension with polyethylene glycol stationary phase. Excellent repeatability was shown with normal alkanes standards of nC8-nC25. Relative standard deviations for retention times are almost zero in 1D, less than 0.2% in 2D, and less than 3.5% for peak areas (n = 9).

Understanding the fundamental structure-property relationships of nanomaterials is critical for many catalytic applications as they comprise of the catalyst designing principles. Here, we develop efficient synthetic methods to prepare various MnO2 structures and investigate their catalytic performance as applied to the reverse Water Gas Shift (rWGS) reaction. We show that the support-free MnO derived from MnO2 1D, 2D and 3D nanostructures are highly selective (100% CO2 to CO), thermally stable catalysts (850 °C) and differently effective in the rWGS. Up to 50% conversion is observed, with a H2/CO2 feed-in ratio of 1 : 1. From both experiments and DFT calculations, we find the MnO2 morphology plays a critical role in governing the catalytic behaviors since it affects the predominant facets exposed under reaction conditions as well as the intercalation of K+ as a structural building block, substantially affecting the gas-solid interactions. The relative adsorption energy of reactant (CO2) and product (CO), ΔE = Eads(CO2) -Eads(CO), is found to correlate linearly with the catalytic activity, implying a structure-function relationship. The strong correlation found between Eads(CO2) -Eads(CO), or more generally, Eads(R) -Eads(P), and catalytic activity makes ΔE a useful descriptor for characterization of efficient catalysts involving gas-solid interactions beyond the rWGS.

The aim of the present study was to assess the possibility and efficacy of utilizing a laminin-chitosan-poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid), otherwise known as laminin-chitosan-PLGA, nerve conduit with the co-transplantation of Schwann and neural stem cells to repair peripheral nerve defects. Previous in vitro experiments have demonstrated that the three-dimensional structure of the built in fiber filament electrospinning of laminin-chitosan-PLGA nerve conduit is beneficial to the migration and regeneration of nerve cells, and has notable mechanical strength and plasticity. It is able to provide support in the neural tissue regeneration process, and has the ability to degrade itself once peripheral nerves complete their regeneration, providing more advantages than other biological and synthetic materials. In the present study, 132 female Sprague Dawley rats were used to establish an animal model of laryngeal nerve injury, and the rats were randomly divided into six groups for experimentation. The nerve conduit was prepared and co-cultured with Schwann and neural stem cells, and micro-surgical techniques were used to repair the 5-mm-long recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries. Functional and histological assessments were performed at 8 and 12 weeks post-surgery, respectively. The results revealed that the laminin-chitosan-PLGA nerve conduit combined with Schwann and neural stem cells was able to promote nerve regeneration (P<0.05), and its effect was superior to those of the autograft (P<0.05). The results of the present study suggest that this is the ideal method for repairing peripheral nerve defects, and cells in the graft may promote nerve regeneration.

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma of the larynx is a rare and highly malignant tumor. We present the report of a 59-year-old man with dedifferentiated laryngeal chondrosarcoma, which was difficult to diagnose even under microscopic examination. The original diagnosis was an aneurysmal bone cyst, and the final diagnosis was established only after careful consideration of the imaging, surgical, and microscopic findings. In clinical practice, there are many similarities between dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma and aneurysmal bone cysts. Furthermore, it is difficult to identify dedifferentiated laryngeal chondrosarcoma with a giant-cell malignant mesenchymal component. This report describes our experience and discusses this phenomenon.

The subcutaneous soft tissue of the forehead is a rare anatomic site for Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), and no such case has previously been reported in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. HLs commonly present in the nodal regions in the majority of patients, rarely occurring in extranodal sites, whereas primary extranodal lymphoma is less common and is more typical in cases of non-HL. The present study reports a novel case of extranodal head and neck classical HL (cHL), initially diagnosed as frontal fibroma. The present study describes an unusual case of subcutaneous soft tissue involvement of HL, aiming to enhance current levels of awareness for patients with extranodal symptoms. A 25-year-old male, who inadvertently detected a hard painless mass above the right superciliary arch 2 months prior to admission in April 2013 was eventually diagnosed with mixed cellularity cHL. Subsequent to six cycles of doxorubicin (Adriamycin), bleomycin, vindesine and dacarbazine chemotherapy, followed by four cycles of ifosfamide, gemcitabine, vinorelbine and prednisone chemotherapy, a satisfactory curative effect was obtained. In conclusion, it is proposed that lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a mass involving the subcutaneous soft tissue.

An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a type of reactive reparative bone neoplasm that rarely occurs in the head and neck. To date, only a small number of cases have been previously reported. The present study reports the case of a 58-year-old male who presented with a tumor in the laryngeal cricoid cartilage, a rare position for a tumor, who subsequently underwent treatment by surgical resection. Based on the observations of the present study and a literature review, it was concluded that an ABC of the larynx can be identified based on a combination of radiology and postoperative histopathology examinations. However, following a tracheotomy and excision, the difficulty of performing tracheal cannula removal is inevitable. The present study described in detail a rare disease, ABC, occurring in the larynx. More cases are required for follow-up studies.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) and Schwann cells (SCs) both play an important role in the recovery and regeneration of peripheral nerve injury, which makes them become the focus in the field of nerve injury research. SCs provide a suitable microenvironment for the recovery and regeneration of injured peripheral nerve through secreting various cytokines and other related factors, and they can significantly promote the differentiation of NSCs into neurons. Recently with the development of microsurgical technique, using nerve conduits along with NSCs and SCs to bridge nerve stumps so as to repair peripheral nerve injury has now attracted increasing research interest. In this article, we focus on the effects and mechanisms of NSCs and SCs on peripheral nerve injury and regeneration process, and describe the future trend and potential clinical application of the technology combining both two cells and nerve conduits to repair peripheral nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surgical management for the severe stenosis of peripheral esophageal access. METHOD: Twenty-three patients who underwent severe stenosis of peripheral esophageal access from 2000 to 2009, were retrospectively reviewed. The surgical plan was selected by considering the stage of stenosis, dilatation, reconstruction of hypopharynx, oesophagus or larynx. RESULT: Twenty-two patients resumed a normal oral diet and 21 cases succeeded in decannulation, no stenosis recurred after a 1-9 years follow-up. CONCLUSION: The severe stenosis of peripheral esophageal access can get good results when the appropriate surgical plan were choice.

OBJECTIVE: To study the self-assessment, acoustic analysis, laryngoscopy and its relationship for patients with voice disorders before and after surgery. METHODS: Fifty patients with voice disorders were undergone self-assessment, acoustic analysis, and laryngoscopy before and after voice surgery. Self-assessment were done by voice handicap index (VHI) Scale Chinese version, including functional (F), physiological (P), emotion (E) and its sum denoted as T. Acoustic analysis were made for patient samples by Dr. Speech voice analysis software and jitter (J), shimmer (S), normalized noise energy (NNE) were selected as three parameters. Laryngoscopic examination were used to record the closure of vocal cord morphologically (C). RESULT: In addition to E, F, P and T(VH) of VHI scale had a good correlation. In acoustic analysis J, S and NNE had a good correlation between them. F, P and T(VH) of VHI scale and acoustic analysis parameters J, S and NNE had a good correlation. Closed degree C and the VHI scale F, P and T(VH) as well as acoustic analysis parameters J, S, NNE had a good correlation. All the above data use were analyzed by Pearson correlation test. CONCLUSION: VHI scale Chinese version make the patient's subjective feelings as the center, thus it has some limitations for the impact of East-West cultural differences, age, educational level and other factors. Acoustic analysis can show a detailed objective aspect of the patient's voice quality and evaluate the result of surgical treatment. Laryngoscopy provide an excellent morphological evidence. Consistency of three methods can do a comprehensive assessment for the voice disease.
