RESUMEN

The purpose of our narrative review is to summarize the utilization of social media (SoMe) platforms for research communication within the field of surgery. We searched the PubMed database for articles in the last decade that discuss the utilization of SoMe in surgery and then categorized the diverse purposes of SoMe. SoMe proved to be a powerful tool for disseminating articles. Employing strategic methods like visual abstracts enhances article citation rates, the impact factor, h-index, and Altmetric score (an emerging alternative metric that comprehensively and instantly quantifies the social impact of scientific papers). SoMe also proved valuable for surgical education, with online videos shared widely for surgical training. However, it is essential to acknowledge the associated risk of inconsistency in quality. Moreover, SoMe facilitates discussion on specific topics through hashtags or closed groups and is instrumental in recruiting surgeons, with over half of general surgery residency programs in the US efficiently leveraging these platforms to attract the attention of potential candidates. Thus, there is a wealth of evidence supporting the effective use of SoMe for surgeons. In the contemporary era where SoMe is widely utilized, surgeons should be well-versed in this evidence.

PURPOSE: In the digital era, the internet is the go-to source of information, and patients often seek insights on medical conditions like TMJ ankylosis. YouTube, a popular platform, is widely used for this purpose. However, YouTube's lack of regulation means it can host unreliable content. Hence, the primary objective of this study is to assess the scientific quality of YouTube videos concerning TMJ ankylosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed 59 TMJ ankylosis-related videos. Two Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialists assessed these videos. Data on the video source, duration, upload date, the time elapsed since upload, total views, likes, dislikes and comments, Interaction index, and viewing rate were collected and analyzed. Video quality was assessed using the Global Quality Scale (GQS) and the Quality Criteria for Consumer Health Information (DISCERN), comparing health professionals and non-health professionals. RESULTS: Health professional's videos were better in terms of GQS 3.21 ± 0.94 and DISCERN score 3.03 ± 0.75 as compared to the non-health professional videos GQS 3.0 ± 1.04, and DISCERN 2.81 ± 1.13. Health professional group videos had more reliability and better quality than the non-health professional group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: YouTube should not be relied on as a trustworthy source for high-quality and reliable information regarding TMJ ankylosis videos. Healthcare professionals must be prepared to address any ambiguous or misleading information and to prioritize building trustworthy relationships with patients through accurate diagnostic and therapeutic processes.

PURPOSE: YouTube, a popular source for diverse information, hosts a wealth of content on aesthetic canthoplasty. Yet, concerns linger about the accuracy and reliability of these videos, with potential for inaccuracies, biases, or misleading information. This study aims to evaluate the quality and reliability of YouTube content on this sought-after facial enhancement procedure. METHODS: The study employs four distinct scoring tools: the Global Quality Score (GQS), the Medical Quality Video Evaluation Tool (MQ-VET), the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Audiovisual Materials (PEMAT-A/V), and the Video Power Index (VPI). RESULTS: Analysis of a total of 173 YouTube videos relevant to aesthetic canthoplasty revealed scores that were primarily indicative of poor quality and reliability.(Mean score ± SD, PEMAT A/V: 30.75 ± 28.8, MQ-VET: 28.57 ± 12.6, GQS: 1.7 ± 1) Notably, these videos were predominantly uploaded by healthcare professionals (82.1%), and they focused more on advertisements (46.2%) than on scientific or educational information. Their elevated viewership and engagement metrics (likes, comments, and shares) attest to their significant popularity and influence. (Mean VPI score: 176.6 ± 635.8). CONCLUSION: YouTube's influence on aesthetic eyelid surgery is undeniable, shaping patient choices and expectations. However, unrealistic beauty ideals, heightened body dissatisfaction, and social comparisons lurk within its content, potentially harming psychological well-being and surgical decisions. Prioritizing qualified medical guidance and critical evaluation of online information are crucial for patients. Authors and platforms must act responsibly: authors by producing high-quality content, platforms by tackling misinformation.

Background: The available tools for evaluating scientific content target written scientific evidence and referencing without considering surgical, technical, or video graphic aspects. Objective: This study developed and validated a tool for qualitatively evaluating videos in the field of skin surgery. This will increase the quality of recorded surgical materials published online and ultimately enhance the reliability of streaming platforms as educational resources. Methodology: Tool development included several stages: draft generation, expert panel setting, internal reliability testing, and pilot study. Results: After two rounds of expert panels evaluating the developed tool, 23 relevant items evaluating the educational value, scientific accuracy, and clarity of the surgical technical steps of the videos were obtained. We applied the tool to the top 25 YouTube videos discussing elliptical excision. Internal consistency, reliability, and substantial agreement between the raters were identified. We identified a strong positive correlation between our tool score and the global rating score (r= 0.55, P= 0.004). Conclusion: It is critical to avoid relying on any video for educational purposes. The tool generated and validated in our study can determine a video's value. A pilot study of 25 YouTube videos demonstrated that the available videos are of fair-good quality, thus necessitating the need for high-quality video production.

BACKGROUND: YouTube, a widely recognized global video platform, is inaccessible in China, whereas Bilibili and TikTok are popular platforms for long and short videos, respectively. There are many videos related to laryngeal carcinoma on these platforms. This study aims to identify upload sources, contents, and feature information of these videos on YouTube, Bilibili, and TikTok, and further evaluate the video quality. METHODS: On January 1, 2024, we searched the top 100 videos by default sort order (300 videos in total) with the terms "laryngeal carcinoma" and "throat cancer" on YouTube, "" on Bilibili and TikTok. Videos were screened for relevance and similarity. Video characteristics were documented, and quality was assessed by using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI), Global Quality Score (GQS), and modified DISCERN (mDISCERN). RESULTS: The analysis included 99 YouTube videos, 76 from Bilibili, and 73 from TikTok. Median video lengths were 193 s (YouTube), 136 s (Bilibili), and 42 s (TikTok). TikTok videos demonstrated higher audience interaction. Bilibili had the lowest ratio of original contents (69.7%). Treatment was the most popular topic on YouTube and Bilibili, while that was the prognosis on TikTok. Solo narration was the most common video style across all platforms. Video uploaders were predominantly non-profit organizations (YouTube), self-media (Bilibili), and doctors (TikTok), with TikTok authors having the highest certification rate (83.3%). Video quality, assessed using PEMAT, VIQI, GQS, and mDISCERN, varied across platforms, with YouTube generally showing the highest scores. Videos from professional authors performed better than videos from non-professionals based on the GQS and mDISCERN scores. Spearman correlation analysis showed no strong relationships between the video quality and the audience interaction. CONCLUSIONS: Videos on social media platforms can help the public learn about the knowledge of laryngeal cancer to some extent. TikTok achieves the best flow, but videos on YouTube are of the best quality. However, the video quality across all platforms still needs enhancement. We need more professional uploaders to ameliorate the video quality related to laryngeal carcinoma. Content creators also should be aware of the certification, the originality, and the style of video shooting. As for the platforms, refining the algorithm will allow users to receive more high-quality videos.

BACKGROUND: Patients and healthcare professionals extensively rely on the internet for medical information. Low-quality videos can significantly impact the patient-doctor relationship, potentially affecting consultation efficiency and decision-making process. Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is an artificial intelligence application with the potential to improve medical reports, provide medical information, and supplement orthopedic knowledge acquisition. This study aimed to assess the ability of ChatGPT-4 to detect deficiencies in these videos, assuming it would be successful in identifying such deficiencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: YouTube was searched for 'rotator cuff surgery' and 'rotator cuff surgery clinic' videos. A total of 90 videos were evaluated, with 40 included in the study after exclusions. Using the Google Chrome extension '' YouTube Summary with ChatGPT & Claude'', transcripts of these videos were accessed. Two senior orthopedic surgeons and ChatGPT-4 evaluated the videos using the rotator cuff surgery YouTube score (RCSS) system and DISCERN criteria. RESULTS: ChatGPT-4's RCSS evaluations were comparable to those of the observers in 25% of instances, and 40% for DISCERN. The interobserver agreement between human observers and ChatGPT-4 was fair (AC1: 0.575 for DISCERN and AC1: 0.516 for RCSS). Even after correcting ChatGPT-4's incorrect answers, the agreement did not change significantly. ChatGPT-4 tended to give higher scores than the observers, particularly in sections related to anatomy, surgical technique, and indications for surgery. CONCLUSION: The use of ChatGPT-4 as an observer in evaluating rotator cuff surgery-related videos and identifying deficiencies is not currently recommended. Future studies with trained ChatGPT models may address these deficiencies and enable ChatGPT to evaluate videos at a human observer level.

Purpose: This study seeks to assess the quality and reliability of YouTube videos on Dupuytren's contracture. Methods: The first 50 unique videos on Dupuytren's contracture were evaluated by searching YouTube for Dupuytren's contracture. Video metrics, source, and content type were recorded. Video reliability was assessed using the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) Benchmark criteria. Video educational quality was assessed using the Global Quality Score (GQS) and a Dupuytren's Contracture-Specific Score (DC-SS). Results: The total number of views for all 50 videos evaluated was 1,908,608 (mean, 38,172.16 ± 5,502.45 views). The mean reliability (JAMA) score was 2.21 ± 0.69 (range 0-4), the mean educational quality (GQS) score was 2.80 ± 1.28 (range 1-5), and the mean disease-specific (DC-SS) score was 6.05 ± 2.17 (range 0-15). Nonphysician health care professionals had the most popular videos, but the lowest DC-SS. GQS varied based on the video source, with physician-uploaded videos having the highest average quality scores. Physician source was an independent positive predictor of higher quality (GQS) (ß = 0.477). Conclusions: Videos on Dupuytren's contracture were frequently viewed on YouTube but had overall low educational quality and reliability. Of the videos that discussed collagenase as a treatment option, 40% failed to mention percutaneous needle aponeurotomy. Patients may be exposed to an incomplete set of treatment options. Educational content on YouTube should be interpreted cautiously and proper in-office education and high-quality resources for Dupuytren's contracture should be provided by physicians. Purpose: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are one of the most common fractures in adults. Adequate patient education is crucial for adherence to treatment. YouTube is a popular, accessible resource that has become a valuable tool for obtaining health information. The current study evaluated the top 50 YouTube videos on DRF treatment for patient education. Methods: A systematic search was conducted on YouTube using three searches to obtain 150 videos. Duplicate, nonrelevant, paid, and non-English videos were removed, and the top 50 rank-ordered videos were reviewed and characterized in terms of general (views, likes, video length, and publication date), source (publisher affiliation, presenter type, and target audience), and content (media type, topic coverage, advertisements, and bias) parameters. Results: Only 56% of videos were directed toward patients versus 40% for health care providers, highlighting a gap in patient-oriented educational content on YouTube. Most (86%) videos included effective visual aids, aligning with best practices for educational videos. Surgical management was overrepresented in 64% of the videos as opposed to nonsurgical management in 34% of videos. Only 31% of patient-oriented videos discussed surgical complications. Home exercises were emphasized in 75% of the videos discussing recovery topics. Conclusions: Although YouTube has the potential to be an effective resource for disseminating health information to patients, it has several limitations for education in DRF treatment including the lack of patient-oriented educational videos, overrepresentation of surgical treatment, and lack of information on surgical complications. Nonetheless, YouTube may have an important role as a supplementary resource, especially in certain topics such as guiding postoperative recovery with home exercises. Clinical relevance: This study allows health care providers and content creators to proactively address information gaps identified in educational YouTube videos on DRF treatment. It helps characterize the role of YouTube in supporting the treatment and recovery of patients experiencing DRFs.

Background: Several pelvic area cancers exhibit high incidence rates, and their surgical treatment can result in adverse effects such as urinary and fecal incontinence, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Post-surgery incontinence is a significant concern, with prevalence rates ranging from 25 to 45% for urinary incontinence and 9-68% for fecal incontinence. Cancer survivors are increasingly turning to YouTube as a platform to connect with others, yet caution is warranted as misinformation is prevalent. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the information quality in YouTube videos about post-surgical incontinence after pelvic area cancer surgery. Methods: A YouTube search for "Incontinence after cancer surgery" yielded 108 videos, which were subsequently analyzed. To evaluate these videos, several quality assessment tools were utilized, including DISCERN, GQS, JAMA, PEMAT, and MQ-VET. Statistical analyses, such as descriptive statistics and intercorrelation tests, were employed to assess various video attributes, including characteristics, popularity, educational value, quality, and reliability. Also, artificial intelligence techniques like PCA, t-SNE, and UMAP were used for data analysis. HeatMap and Hierarchical Clustering Dendrogram techniques validated the Machine Learning results. Results: The quality scales presented a high level of correlation one with each other (p < 0.01) and the Artificial Intelligence-based techniques presented clear clustering representations of the dataset samples, which were reinforced by the Heat Map and Hierarchical Clustering Dendrogram. Conclusions: YouTube videos on "Incontinence after Cancer Surgery" present a "High" quality across multiple scales. The use of AI tools, like PCA, t-SNE, and UMAP, is highlighted for clustering large health datasets, improving data visualization, pattern recognition, and complex healthcare analysis.

Background: Tobacco use and exposure are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the past decade, educational efforts to reduce tobacco use and exposure have extended to social media, including video-sharing platforms. YouTube is one of the most publicly accessed video-sharing platforms. Purpose: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to identify and describe sources, formats, and content of widely viewed YouTube videos on smoking cessation. Methods: In August to September 2023, the keywords "stop quit smoking" were used to search in YouTube and identify 100 videos with the highest view count. Results: Collectively, these videos were viewed over 220 million times. The majority (n = 35) were posted by nongovernmental/organization sources, with a smaller number posted by consumers (n = 25), and only eleven were posted by governmental agencies. The format used in the highest number of videos was the testimonial (n = 32 videos, over 77 million views). Other popular formats included animation (n = 23 videos, over 90 million views) and talk by professional (n = 20 videos, almost 43 million views). Video content included evidence-based and non-evidence-based practices. Evidence-based strategies aligned with U.S. Public Health Service Tobacco Treatment Guidelines (e.g. health systems approach in tobacco treatment, medication management). Non-evidence-based strategies included mindfulness and hypnotherapy. One key finding was that environmental tobacco exposure received scant coverage across the videos. Conclusions: Social media such as YouTube promises to reach large audiences at low cost without requiring high reading literacy. Additional attention is needed to create videos with up-to-date, accurate information that can engage consumers.

PURPOSE: Online videos accessed via YouTube are a popular method to provide health education. Videos need to be critically evaluated for educational qualities as the information could influence health outcomes. The present study aimed to evaluate the understandability, actionability and reliability of videos available on YouTube regarding brain, head, and neck cancer information. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted with a specific search strategy and inclusion/exclusion criteria based on previous studies. For each video, video characteristics and user engagement activities were recorded. Videos were evaluated using the PEMAT-A/V and modified DISCERN criteria. Spearman's rank correlation, Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for analysis. RESULTS: Out of 200 retrieved videos, 37 were included and analysed. The median length of the video was 3 min and 33 s. The majority of videos were published by health institutional and private channels (43.2%, n = 16). Health institutional channels received the highest actionability (Md = 37.5, p = 0.049), while private channels resulted in lower views/day (Md = 0.46, p = 0.001) and likes/day (Md = 0.01, p = 0.002). Animated and narrated videos acquired the highest understandability score (Md = 92.31, p < 0.001). Videos with professional transcripts reported higher actionability (Md = 62.5, p = 0.004), reliability (Md = 3.33, p = 0.028), views/day (Md = 29.31, p = 0.026), and likes/day (Md = 0.272, p = 0.023). CONCLUSION: YouTube videos pertaining to brain and head and neck cancer have low understandability, low actionability and moderate reliability. It is beneficial to have a stronger representation of trustworthy and credible organisations for sharing essential health information via YouTube. Including animations and professional video transcripts may improve their overall quality and consumer engagement.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the quality and reliability of YouTube videos focusing on unilateral biportal endoscopic spine surgery, a novel technique for spinal decompression in degenerative spinal disease. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted in February 2023, involved an online search on YouTube using the term "unilateral biportal endoscopic spine surgery". Video popularity was assessed using the Video Power Index. Video reliability and quality were measured using the Global Quality Scale, the Journal of the American Medical Association benchmark criteria, and the modified DISCERN instrument. RESULTS: Ninety-three videos were included for evaluation. Uploader profiles were categorized by continent, with 61.3% from Asia, 35.5% from the United States, 2.2% from Africa, and 1.1% from Australia. When comparing 3 groups as South Korea, United States, and other countries, no significant differences were observed in the technical characteristics of the videos. However, the educational quality and reliability of the videos were higher in those uploaded from South Korea (P < 0.001).When the videos were divided into 2 groups according to their educational quality, significant difference were noted in video duration, loading time, video quality, and reliability (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The YouTube videos on unilateral biportal endoscopic spine surgery showed high quality and reliability. However, videos from South Korea were found to have higher educational quality and reliability, while other specifications were similar for all videos. Furthermore, it was determined that videos uploaded more recently and with longer duration were of higher quality.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer overdiagnosis is a major public health issue in South Korea, which has the highest incidence rate. The accessibility of information through the Internet, particularly on YouTube, could potentially impact excessive screening. This study aimed to analyze the content of thyroid cancer-related YouTube videos, particularly those from 2016 onwards, to evaluate the potential spread of misinformation. METHODS: A total of 326 videos for analysis were collected using a video search protocol with the keyword "thyroid cancer" on YouTube. This study classified the selected YouTube videos as either provided by medical professionals or not and used topic clustering with LDA (latent dirichlet allocation), sentiment analysis with KoBERT (Korean bidirectional encoder representations from transformers), and reliability evaluation to analyze the content. The proportion of mentions of poor prognosis for thyroid cancer and the categorization of advertising content was also analyzed. RESULTS: Videos by medical professionals were categorized into 7 topics, with "Thyroid cancer is not a 'Good cancer'" being the most common. The number of videos opposing excessive thyroid cancer screening decreased gradually yearly. Videos advocating screening received more favorable comments from viewers than videos opposing excessive thyroid cancer screening. Patient experience videos were categorized into 6 topics, with the "Treatment process and after-treatment" being the most common. CONCLUSION: This study found that a significant proportion of videos uploaded by medical professionals on thyroid cancer endorse the practice, potentially leading to excessive treatments. The study highlights the need for medical professionals to provide high-quality and unbiased information on social media platforms to prevent the spread of medical misinformation and the need for criteria to judge the content and quality of online health information.

YouTube is the third most popular app in the world and continues to grow each year while it reaches over 2 billion users a month. A variety of veterinary topics are addressed on YouTube but to date there have been no studies analysing misinformation of various canine cancer topics on YouTube or social media. This study described the characteristics of 99 unique videos and used the validated DISCERN quality criteria for consumer health information and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) to characterize their usefulness. The overall median DISCERN quality score was 3 (out of 5), the median PEMAT understandability score was 72%, and 61% of videos contained little to no misinformation. 53% of videos were created by veterinarians and this subset had significantly higher PEMAT understandability and DISCERN quality scores compared with client-created content (p = .0228 and p ≤ .0001, respectively). Videos with little to no misinformation had statistically significant higher DISCERN quality scores (3 vs. 2, p = .0001). There was no statistical significance between misinformation levels and video length, PEMAT understandability, thumbs up/view, or views/mo. These data reveal similar rates of misinformation in videos on canine cancer compared to that reported for various human cancer topics. This study highlights the need for veterinarians to guide clients to more reliable and understandable information regarding their pet's health.

BACKGROUND: To determine the quality and reliability of DCR YouTube videos as patient education resources and identify any associated factors predictive of video quality. METHODS: A YouTube search was conducted using the terms "Dacryocystorhinostomy, DCR, surgery" on 12th of January 2022, with the first 50 relevant videos selected for inclusion. For each video, the following was collected: video hyperlink, title, total views, months since the video was posted, video length, total likes/dislikes, authorship (i.e. surgeon, patient experience or media companies) and number of comments. The videos were graded independently by a resident, a registrar and an oculoplastic surgeon using three validated scoring systems: the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), DISCERN, and Health on the Net (HON). RESULTS: The average number of video views was 22,992, with the mean length being 488.12 s and an average of 18 comments per video. The consensus JAMA, DISCERN and HON scores were 2.1 ± 0.6, 29.1 ± 8.8 and 2.7 ± 1.0, respectively. This indicated that the included videos were of a low quality, however, only DISCERN scores had good interobserver similarity. Videos posted by surgeons were superior to non-surgeons when considering mean JAMA and HON scores. No other factors were associated with the quality of educational content. CONCLUSION: The quality and reliability of DCR related content for patient education is relatively low. Based on this study's findings, patients should be encouraged to view videos created by surgeons or specialists in preference to other sources on YouTube.

Background Social media, notably YouTube (Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States), has transformed global communication and access to information. In Saudi Arabia, with high internet usage, YouTube influencers play a significant role in shaping health attitudes and behaviors. This study investigates the impact of YouTube influencers on health behaviors among Saudi Arabian residents, considering the unique cultural and socio-demographic context. Methods We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study in Saudi Arabia. We surveyed a convenience sample of 703 young Saudi participants from September 2022 to March 2023. Data collection utilized an anonymous online questionnaire distributed via popular social media platforms. The questionnaire covered sociodemographic information, health habits, perceptions of influencers, and their impact on health attitudes. Descriptive statistics, including percentages, frequencies, means, and standard deviations, were employed to summarize participant characteristics and health-related variables. Pearson's chi-square test was utilized to compare response variables among different groups. Results Findings show significant gender disparities in health habits, with males more likely to smoke but females less physically active (p<0.01). Influencers were perceived as encouraging healthy habits by 71.7% of participants, yet 55.6% also believed they promoted unhealthy habits. Positive outcomes included dietary improvements (62.6%) and smoking cessation (20.5%). People preferred healthcare influencers the most (66.8%), followed by sports and fashion influencers. Conclusions This study highlights YouTube influencers' substantial influence on health behaviors in Saudi Arabia. It suggests the potential for influencers, especially in healthcare, to contribute positively to public health. Viewer discernment is essential due to varying influencer impacts. These findings underscore the complex role of YouTube influencers in shaping health behaviors and suggest avenues for targeted health interventions.

Considerando-se a crescente importância do YouTube como fonte para busca de informações em saúde, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar os fatores associados a um maior número de visualizações de vídeos sobre vacinas contra a covid-19. Para isso, usaram-se técnicas de Processamento de Linguagem Natural e modelagem estatística com base em 13.619 vídeos, abrangendo três tipos de variáveis: métricas gerais, conteúdo textual dos títulos e informações sobre os participantes dos vídeos. Entre os resultados, destacam-se os vídeos de duração média ou longa, postados durante a madrugada e nos fins de semana, com tags, descrição e títulos curtos, além de elementos controversos e presença de figuras masculinas e brancas em miniaturas. Os achados contribuem para uma melhor compreensão dos possíveis fatores a serem considerados na produção de conteúdo de comunicação em saúde sobre vacinas no YouTube.


Considering the growing importance of YouTube as a source for health information search, the aim of this study was to analyze the factors associated with a higher number of views in videos about covid-19 vaccines. For this purpose, Natural Language Processing techniques and statistical modeling were employed based on 13,619 videos, encompassing three types of variables: general metrics, textual content of titles, and information about the participants in the videos. Among the results, videos of medium or long duration, posted during late hours and on weekends, with tags, descriptions, and short titles, along with controversial elements and the presence of male and white figures in thumbnails stand out. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the potential factors to be considered in the production of health communication content about vaccines on YouTube.


Teniendo en cuenta la creciente importancia de YouTube como fuente de búsqueda de información en salud, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar los factores asociados a un mayor número de visualizaciones en videos sobre vacunas contra el covid-19. Para eso, se emplearon técnicas de Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural y modelado estadístico basadas en 13,619 videos, que abarcan tres tipos de variables: métricas generales, contenido textual de títulos y información sobre los participantes en los videos. Entre los resultados, destacan los videos de duración media o larga, publicados durante altas horas de la noche y los fines de semana, con tags, descripciones y títulos cortos, junto con elementos controvertidos y la presencia de figuras masculinas y blancas en las miniaturas. Estos hallazgos contribuyen a una mejor comprensión de los posibles factores a tener en cuenta en la producción de contenido de comunicación de salud sobre vacunas en YouTube.

Introduction Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant public health challenge globally, with its pathogenesis involving the transformation of benign adenomas into malignant carcinomas. Despite advancements in screening and early detection significantly improving outcomes, the rise of digital platforms like YouTube for disseminating health information presents new challenges. Concerns over the accuracy and reliability of content underline the necessity for rigorous evaluation of these digital health education tools. Methods Our study was conducted at Nassau University Medical Center, East Meadow, New York. We meticulously analyzed YouTube videos on "colon cancer screening awareness," employing strict selection criteria to ensure both relevance and quality, focusing on English-language content with pertinent audio. Videos were evaluated for their quantitative and qualitative attributes-views, subscriber counts, likes/dislikes, comments, and content type, classifying them as scholarly or personal. We assessed video credibility through scientific accuracy using the DISCERN instrument, Global Quality Score (GQS), and Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), ensuring consistency in quality and reliability evaluation among seven researchers via the intraclass correlation coefficient. These tools - DISCERN for assessing reliability and quality, GQS for evaluating overall quality, and PEMAT for understandability and actionability - facilitated a comprehensive evaluation framework. Our analysis, leveraging descriptive and inferential statistics, scrutinized differences in content quality between academic and private institutions, employing t-tests to identify statistically significant disparities. The study utilized Microsoft Excel (version 16.73, Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, United States) and IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 29.0 (released 2022; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). for robust data processing and analysis, confirming the educational value and trustworthiness of the examined YouTube content. Results Our study of 156 YouTube videos on educational content, split between academic (68 videos) and private sources (88 videos), revealed significant quality differences. Using the DISCERN, PEMAT, and GQS metrics, academic videos consistently outperformed private ones, with significant margins: DISCERN (54.61 vs. 34.76), PEMAT (3.02 vs. 2.11), and GQS (3.90 vs. 2.02), supported by low p-values indicating a statistically significant superiority. These findings suggest that the source of content-academic versus private-plays a crucial role in determining the quality and reliability of educational materials on platforms like YouTube, highlighting the academic sector's commitment to higher educational standards. Conclusion The study emphasizes the critical role of credible sources in enhancing the quality of health education content on YouTube, particularly concerning CRC screening. The superiority of academic institutions in providing high-quality content suggests a need for viewers to critically assess the source of information. It also calls for enhanced regulatory oversight and measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of health information online.

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the extent to which the demand for ophthalmologic care among patients at the state level is reflected in Google Trends data, serving as an indicator of patient desire in ophthalmology. METHODS: For each state, patient interest in ophthalmologic care was estimated using the Google Trends resource measuring web search and YouTube search rates for multiple ophthalmologic terms. We compared the change in search for ophthalmologic terms over time and used ordinary least squares regression to evaluate whether search interest for ophthalmologic terms was able to predict the rate of practicing ophthalmologists in each state. We also compare the changing rates of searches across the web and YouTube to evaluate the resources patients are most likely to utilize. RESULTS: From 2008 to 2022, web search rates for general ophthalmology related terms increased by 43.98%, while search interest for retinal specific terms increased by 19.51%. YouTube specific results for general ophthalmology terms increased by 55.83% while search for retinal terms fell by 58.48%. Ophthalmologic and retinal specific search interest was not significantly associated with either outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that patient information needs, demographic elements, and the educational backgrounds of residents and fellows - those important factors - are surprisingly poorly correlated with ophthalmology provider density. Furthermore, we observed no noteworthy correlation between the search interest in ophthalmology and the overall density of ophthalmologists or retinal specialists. This implies that there is a pressing need to explore and implement strategies aimed at better aligning these influencing factors the choices made by ophthalmologists in selecting their practice locations to bridge the gap between healthcare availability and public interest.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of laparoscopic myomectomy videos on YouTube and WebSurg. Material and Methods: We searched using the keyword "laparoscopic myomectomy" on WebSurg and selected surgical interventions in the gynecology section. Eleven videos on WebSurg were enrolled. We selected the 22 most-relevant videos on YouTube to create a comparison group, with a ratio of 1:2. Sound in videos, number of subscribers, views, likes, and comments, number of days since videos were uploaded and durations of videos were recorded. View/day, like/view, like/subscriber, and view/subscriber ratios were calculated. The videos were evaluated with usefulness score (US), global quality scoring (GQS), modified discern score (mDS) and laparoscopic surgery video educational guidelines (LAP-VEGaS). Results: The view/day ratio was lower in WebSurg compared to YouTube [1.3 (1.9) vs. 7.5 (30.6), respectively; p=0.039]. No difference was found between WebSurg and YouTube in terms of US, GQS and mDS. On LAP-VEGaS assessment, WebSurg was found to be superior to YouTube in terms of intraoperative findings [2 (1-2) vs. 1 (0-2), p=0.001], additional materials [1 (0-2) vs. 1 (0-1), p=0.041], audio/written commentary [2 (2-2) vs. 2 (0-2), p=0.037], image quality [2 (2-2) vs. 2 (0-2), p=0.023], questions and total score [12 (11-13) vs. 10.5 (4-13), p=0.006]. The proportion of high-quality video was higher in WebSurg compared to YouTube, when the cut-off value of total score of 11 or 12 was used as 10 (100%) vs. 10 (50%), p=0.011 and 9 (90%) vs. 5 (25%), p=0.001, respectively. Conclusion: WebSurg was better compared to YouTube in terms of quality of laparoscopic myomectomy videos.
