Background: Patients with pancreatic cancer have an unfavorable 5-year survival rate of approximately 3% due to diagnosis occurring at advanced stages. Prior research has proposed vitamin C may have a therapeutic and preventative role in pancreatic cancer. Methods: A Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant national database was utilized to assess pancreatic cancer risk in patients with or without a history of vitamin C intake. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes were used, specifically the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) and International Classification of Diseases, Nineth Edition (ICD-9), between January 2010 and December 2020. Patients were matched, and statistical analyses were implemented. Chi-squared, logistic regression, and odds ratio were used to test for significance and to estimate relative risk. Results: A total of 83,941 patients were identified as utilizing prescribed vitamin C. Subsequent matching by Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score and age resulted in two groups of 50,384 patients. The incidence of pancreatic cancer was 243 (0.48%) in the group with a history of vitamin C intake compared to 442 (0.88%) in the control group. The difference was statistically significant by P < 3.174 × 10-14 with an odds ratio of 0.548 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.468 - 0.641). Overall, patients without vitamin C prescription had an increased prevalence of pancreatic cancer throughout all ages and regions of the United States when compared to those with a vitamin C prescription. In addition, healthcare costs were higher in total for the control group when compared to the experimental group. Conclusions: This retrospective cohort study found a statistically significant correlation between vitamin C and subsequent incidence of pancreatic cancer. Further studies are recommended to explore vitamin C's redox and cofactor activity in the context of preventing and possibly treating pancreatic cancer, as well as consider pancreatic cancer lifestyle risk factors such as smoking.

Infertility, which affects around 70 million couples globally, is the inability to conceive after at least a year of continuous, unprotected sexual activity. Male-related elements are involving half of all infertility cases globally. Male infertility has various characteristics, including oligospermia, asthenozoospermia, and teratozoospermia. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of antioxidant-rich food supplements on the properties of semen, like concentration of sperm, morphology, motility, fertility rate, and damage of DNA. Terms such as coenzyme Q10, antioxidants, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, male infertility, selenium and others, were used to search for relevant research papers in the PubMed database. The findings of this study demonstrated beneficial improvements in semen parameters among infertile men who consumed dietary supplements, particularly combining antioxidants like coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

A validated silver nanoparticle assay (SNaP-C) for quantitation of Vitamin C, as ascorbic acid (AA) and total AA (TAA), was applied to 31 beverages. SNaP-C assay results (LOD of 2.2 mg/L AA) were compared to AA and TAA determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV/Vis (LOD = 0.4 mg/L AA), and two well-known assays. All approaches were calibrated using meta-phosphoric acid stabilized AA, where the reducing agent tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride was added to convert dehydroascorbic acid to AA for determination of TAA. Statistical comparisons of these four resulting datasets were completed. SNaP-C and HPLC were not statistically significantly different (P > 0.05) for comparison of AA and TAA (mg/L) in these samples, whereas the CUPRAC and Folin-Ciocalteu assays statistically significantly overestimated values of AA and TAA content, respectively. The SNaP-C method is a novel assay that has high specificity for AA capable of quantifying TAA with addition of TCEP.

Although vitamin C is one of the most important antioxidants, its effect on muscle quality is not fully understood. Therefore, we hypothesized that low dietary vitamin C intake is associated with low muscle strength. To test the hypothesis, a single 24-h dietary recall and handgrip strength test of 10,883 younger adults 19-64 y and 3,961 older adults ≥65 y from the seventh Korea National Health and Examination Survey (KNHANES VII 2016-2018) was analyzed by multivariable linear and logistic regression models, and low muscle strength was defined as handgrip strength <28 kg for men and <18 kg for women. Approximately 15.5% of Korean adults met the recommended intake of dietary vitamin C, and those with higher dietary vitamin C intake had higher total energy and protein intake. After adjusting for confounding variables, including age, body mass index, total energy intake, household income, alcohol consumption, smoking, resistance exercise, medical condition, and dietary intake of protein, vitamin E, and ß-carotene, dietary vitamin C was correlated with maximal handgrip strength in younger women 19-64 y (ß = 0.002; SE = 0.001; P-value = .026) and older women ≥65 y (ß = 0.005; SE = 0.002; P-value = .013). Among older women ≥65 y, those in the lowest quartile of dietary vitamin C intake had a higher risk of low muscle strength compared to those in the highest quartile after adjustment of confounding factors (odds ratio, 2.16; 95% confidence interval, 1.49-3.15). These results imply that adequate dietary vitamin C intake may reduce the risk of sarcopenia in older Korean women.

Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) is an antioxidant that is largely involved in immune defense and enhancing the ability of biological systems to respond to oxidative stress. During the process of free radical scavenging, vitamin C supports the regeneration of vitamin E. Although the functions of antioxidants and their importance have been widely studied, the intricate interplay between antioxidants has yet to be fully elucidated, especially in dogs and cats. As such, the objective of the present study was to determine the effect of a combination of dietary antioxidants on DNA damage and antioxidant status in dogs and cats. Forty adult mixed-breed dogs and 40 adult domestic shorthair cats were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups per species. Dogs and cats remained in these groups for the 84-d duration of the study. The food differed in antioxidant supplementation with the control food meeting all of the Association of American Feed Control Officials requirements for complete and balanced nutrition, including sufficient vitamin E to exceed the published minimum. The treatment diets were targeted to include either 500, 1,000, or 1,500 IU vitamin E/kg as well as 100 ppm of vitamin C and 1.5 ppm of ß-carotene in the food. The effect of vitamin E supplementation level on serum vitamin E concentration, DNA damage, and total antioxidant power was evaluated. Feeding diets enriched with antioxidants resulted in an increased (P < 0.05) circulating vitamin E concentration, increased (P < 0.05) immune cell protection, reduced (P < 0.05) DNA damage in dogs, and an improved (P < 0.05) antioxidant status. Overall, these data demonstrated that feeding a dry kibble with an antioxidant blend inclusive of vitamin E, vitamin C, and ß-carotene enhanced cell protection and improved antioxidant status in dogs and cats.


Animals have an impressive array of defenses to excessive reactive oxygen species in the body. The antioxidant defense system is complex and sophisticated. vitamin E, vitamin C, and ß-carotene are known to scavenge free radicals that are created during times of oxidative stress. To evaluate the effect of the various antioxidants, dogs and cats were fed one of four diets for 84 d. Diets included a control group that had vitamin E concentrations that exceeded regulatory minimums and four treatment groups that were targeted to include 500, 1,000, or 1,500 IU vitamin E/kg as well as 100 ppm of vitamin C and 1.5 ppm of ß-carotene in the food. To assess the effectiveness of the different vitamin E concentrations provided in the foods, circulating vitamin E, DNA damage, and total antioxidant power were assessed. Results from the parameters assessed showed that dogs and cats benefit from supplementing their diet with a blend of antioxidants targeted to include 100 ppm of vitamin C, 1.5 ppm of ß-carotene, and have varying benefits to increased vitamin E/kg in the food.

BACKGROUND: High-dose vitamin C treatment (HVCT) can reduce the adverse effect of chemotherapy and enhance the effect of antitumor therapy, which has been considered one of the safest alternative treatments. However, the severity of its adverse effects may have been underestimated. The most serious adverse effect is hemolysis, which may result in acute kidney injury or death. Although glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is considered to be the main cause, the probability and pathological mechanism are not completely understood, leading to a lack of effective and standardized treatment methods. CASE SUMMARY: Two patients with colorectal cancer developed hemolytic anemia after using 1 g/kg HVCT. In contrast to previous cases, the lowest hemoglobin level in the two cases was < 50 g/L, which was lower than previously reported. This may be because Case 1 had chronic hepatitis B for many years, which caused abnormal liver reserve function, and Case 2 had grade II bone marrow suppression. Both patients improved and were discharged after blood replacement therapy. Our cases had the most severe degree of hemolysis but the best prognosis, suggesting that our treatment may be helpful for rescue of drug-induced hemolysis. This is the first review of the literature on hemolysis caused by HVCT, and we found that all patients with G6PD deficiency developed hemolysis after HVCT. CONCLUSION: G6PD deficiency should be considered as a contraindication to HVCT, and it is not recommended for patients with bone marrow suppression, moderate-to-severe anemia, hematopoietic abnormalities, or abnormal liver and kidney function. Early blood purification and steroid therapy may avoid acute kidney injury or death caused by HVCT-related hemolytic anemia.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) has a high rate of malignant transformation and is an insidious chronic inflammatory disease. Though this disorder seems to be multifactorial in origin, betel quid chewing appears to be the main etiologic factor. Various treatment strategies have been attempted but none proven to cure the disorder because of its multimodal pathogenesis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) appear to have a role in cancer formation. As OSMF is an oral premalignant disorder and found to be associated with carcinogens like areca nut and tobacco, it is believed to have some relationship with ROS. Tissue damage due to ROS along with other mechanisms may result in the complex pathophysiology of OSMF. The antioxidant system in the body helps to prevent damage caused by highly reactive ROS and helps in the repair of tissues. To study the levels of oxidative stress and antioxidant vitamins in OSMF condition, the present review was done. We carried out a thorough literature search to identify original reports and studies determining the status of oxidative stress and antioxidant vitamins in OSMF condition using several databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. Our review observed that the oxidative stress increased in the condition of OSMF as shown by an increase in malonaldehyde (MDA) and a decrease in antioxidant vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Also, after the intake of antioxidant vitamins, there was symptomatic improvement in OSMF patients. With the help of identifying oxidative stress and antioxidant status, we can assess the clinical stage of OSMF and can develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin capable of directly donating electrons to reactive oxygen species, attenuating electrical remodeling, and cardiac dysfunction in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (CS), considered one of the most effective defenses against free radicals in the blood, thus being one of the first antioxidants consumed during oxidative stress. The aim of this review is to assess the effects of perioperative administration of vitamin C in CS patients. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in order to identify prospective cohort studies and/or randomized controlled trials reporting on the perioperative effects of vitamin C among adult patients undergoing CS. Studies published between January 1980 to December 2022 were included in our search, resulting in a total of 31 articles that met all our inclusion criteria. There seems to be a beneficial effect of vitamin C supplementation in arrhythmias such as in postoperative atrial fibrillation, reduction of ICU length of stay, and hospital length of stay, reduction in postoperative ventilation time, in inotropic demand, and in postoperative fatigue. Vitamin C can act as a scavenger of free radicals to decrease the peroxidation of the lipids present in the cell membrane, and to protect the myocardium postoperatively from ischemia/reperfusion injury, thus attenuating oxidative stress and inflammation. It represents a readily available and cost-effective strategy that could improve the outcome of patients undergoing CS, by reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular adverse events, both perioperatively and postoperatively.

INTRODUCTION: Pain is the most common reason for seeking medical treatment. Despite extensive research efforts and effective analgesics modulating pain, there is still a major therapeutic gap in addressing the root causes of pain. Pain is associated with tissue damage induced by oxidative stress and induction of inflammatory mediators following high consumption of antioxidants. The role of antioxidants in general, and the administration of L-ascorbate in particular, is still controversially discussed and underestimated in the daily clinical practice. METHODS: The current literature on the therapeutic effect of L-ascorbate, ascorbic acid, and vitamin C on various pain conditions was evaluated against the background of evidence-based medicine. Those articles, obtained from systematic search in PubMed, were critically assessed and rated in terms of evidence level and methodological quality by two independent experts. The primary purpose of this work was to establish specific pain therapy guidance for intravenous L-ascorbate. RESULTS: A PubMed search revealed 14 suitable articles comprising controlled clinical trials and meta-analyses. An additional ten publications could be identified via secondary literature. There is supporting evidence for the efficacy of ascorbate treatment in inflammatory pain conditions, in the complex regional pain syndrome, in post zoster neuralgia, in neuropathic pain, in post-operative pain conditions, and in tumor-related pain. However, the considered studies differ in the type of administration, in dosage, in duration of treatment, as well as in quality of research. Despite all study heterogeneity, it became evident that research of high scientific quality is in support of the efficacy of L-ascorbate in pain treatment. DISCUSSION: Oxidative stress is present in almost all pain conditions. Because oral administration of most magistral formulas of vitamin C does not provide biological availability, parenteral administration should be preferred and can be supported by an oral dose with high bioavailability on days without intravenous treatment. L-ascorbate should be preferred for parenteral high dosage, rather than ascorbic acid, as it does not release acid valences under physiological conditions. CONCLUSIONS: L-ascorbate is an effective, safe, and economically favorable integrative treatment option for various pain conditions, addressing the root cause of tissue damage and inflammatory mediator burst.

The aim of this work was to study the antioxidant potential of aqueous extracts obtained from different by-products. The effectiveness of these extracts was compared with that of rosemary extract. Total phenol carotenoid and vitamin C contents, as well as in vitro antioxidant activity, were assessed. Phenol content was positively correlated with in vitro antioxidant activity in extracts, while carotenoids showed a less clear relationship. Vitamin C was associated with antioxidant activity in lemon and pepper pomace extracts. Extracts from olive, grape, and lemon by-products displayed the highest antioxidant activity (radical scavenging activity), this being similar to the activity of rosemary extracts. Moreover, the phenolic profile of the extracts was analyzed, revealing diverse phenolic compounds. Rosemary extracts contained the highest variety and quantity of phenolic compounds, while olive pomace extracts were rich in hydroxytyrosol and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Lemon and pepper extracts contained high amounts of tyrosol, and tomato extracts had abundant epicatechin. The PCA analysis distinguished extracts based on in vitro antioxidant activity, phenol, carotenoid, and vitamin C content, along with their phenolic compound profiles. This study emphasizes the capacity of aqueous extract by-products as valuable sources of antioxidants and highlights the importance of understanding their bioactive components.

Jeriva (Syagrus romanzoffiana) is a fruit from palm trees of the Arecaceae family, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas of Latin America. It has low production costs and high productivity throughout the year; however, its consumption is very low, and the production goes almost entirely to feed animals or to waste. To improve its consumption, a good characterization of the whole fruit is necessary. The objective of this work was to evaluate the jeriva pulp, peel and seeds according to carotenoids, phenolic compounds, vitamin C, tocopherols and antioxidant potential using HPLC, microplate readers and spectrophotometric methods. Every part of the fruit exhibited antioxidant capacity in the ORAC and TEAC tests, which can be attributed to its high concentration of polyphenols. Carotenoids were more present in the pulp and peel and almost absent in the seeds. Vitamin C ranged from 12 ± 1 for the seeds up to 92 ± 3 mg/100 g for the pulp. The total phenolic content was quantified between 473 ± 39 for the seeds and 1089 ± 32 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAEs)/100 g for the pulp. These results demonstrate that all parts of this fruit have important bioactive nutrients, with promising perspectives for further scientific approaches and for composing formulations of food products to enhance functional properties.

BACKGROUND: Spinal surgery is a common procedure associated with significant postoperative pain, and identifying effective interventions to manage this pain is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes. This review assesses the existing literature to determine the overall impact of vitamin C supplementation on spinal postoperative pain. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in numerous physiological processes. It functions as a potent antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress within the body. Furthermore, vitamin C is a cofactor in collagen synthesis, a crucial component of connective tissues, including those found in the spinal structures. Given its antioxidant and collagen-promoting properties, vitamin C has piqued interest as a potential therapeutic option for postoperative spinal pain. Based on the available evidence, vitamin C may have a beneficial effect on postoperative spinal pain, including reducing pain scores, analgesic consumption, and the incidence of complications such as complex regional pain syndrome. However, more research is needed to fully understand the optimal dosage and duration of vitamin C supplementation for postoperative pain management. CONCLUSION: Vitamin C could be considered a potentially beneficial adjunctive therapy for managing spinal postoperative pain, but its routine use requires further investigation.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients are at increased risk for atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and progression to end stage kidney disease (ESKD). This heavy CVD risk cannot be solely at-tributed to traditional Framingham risk factors. Oxidative stress (OS), defined as the disruption of balance between prooxidants and antioxidants in favor of the former, has emerged as a novel risk factor for CVD and CKD progression. Specifically, lipid peroxidation has been identified as a trigger for endothelial dys-function, the first step towards atherogenesis and protein oxidation has been associated with CKD progres-sion. The oxidation of proteins and lipids starts early in CKD, increases gradually with disease progression and is further exacerbated in ESKD, due to dialysis related factors. In order to counteract the deleterious effects of free radicals and thereby ameliorate, or delay, CV disease and progression of CKD, exogenous administration of antioxidants has been proposed. Here, we attempt to summarize existing data from ex-perimental and clinical studies that test antioxidants for their possible beneficial effects against CVD and CKD progression such as vitamins E and C, statins, omega-3 fatty acids, trace elements, polyphenols and N-acetylcysteine.

Functional constituents are the main concern in food production and consumption. Because foods rich in functional constituents have antioxidant capacity and are important in keeping consumers healthy. Pleurotus ostreatus is among foods rich in functional constituents. However, its functional constituents are affected by various factors. This study compared the antioxidant capacity of P. ostreatus grown on different substrates: straws of tef (Trt1), barley (Trt2), and wheat (Trt3), husks of faba bean (Trt4), and field pea (Trt5), sawdust (Trt6), and the mixture of the above with 1:1 w/w (Trt7). Trt7 had significantly higher radical scavenging activity (RSA) (73.27%), vitamin C (10.61 mg/100 g), and vitamin D (4.92 mg/100 g) compared to other treatments. Whereas the lowest values of RSA (44.24%), vitamin C (5.39 mg/100 g), and vitamin D (1.21 mg/100 g) were found in Trt2. The results indicated that mixed substrate may be a good growth substrate for functionally beneficial P. ostreatus and could be a promising source of natural antioxidants.

Titanium alloys are widely used as implant materials due to their biocompatibility and superior mechanical properties for high-load-bearing applications. However, one of the major challenges is their inferior bioactivity and osseoconductivity. Hydroxyapatite is widely used as an alternative material for bone implants due to its compositional similarity to natural bone. In this study, hydroxyapatite is coated on Ti6Al4V discs to enhance its bioactivity. The coated discs are drop-casted with curcumin in the lower layer and vitamin C in the upper layer. This study aims to evaluate the effects of this dual drug delivery system on osteoblast cell proliferation, inhibition of osteoclastogenesis, chemo-preventive and infection control properties. The coating strength obtained is 22 ± 2 MPa. The release from the dual delivery system shows a 1.5-fold increase in osteoblast cell viability, a 1.5-fold reduction in osteoclast cell differentiation, a 2-fold decrease in osteosarcoma growth. The release of curcumin demonstrates a 94% antibacterial efficacy, while the release of vitamin C exhibits an efficacy of 98.6% aganist Staphylococcus aureus. This multifunctional system can be used as a potential implant for load-bearing applications.

BACKGROUND: Retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPECs) are a type of retinal cells that structurally and physiologically support photoreceptors. However, hyperglycemia has been shown to play a critical role in the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR), which is one of the leading causes of vision impairment. In the diabetic eye, the high glucose environment damages RPECs via the induction of oxidative stress, leading to the release of excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) and triggering apoptosis. In this study, we aim to investigate the antioxidant mechanism of Vitamin C in reducing hyperglycemia-induced stress and whether this mechanism can preserve the function of RPECs. METHODS AND RESULTS: ARPE-19 cells were treated with high glucose in the presence or absence of Vitamin C. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Cleaved poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) was used to identify apoptosis in the cells. ROS were detected by the DCFH-DA reaction. The accumulation of sorbitol in the aldose reductase (AR) polyol pathway was determined using the sorbitol detection assay. Primary mouse RPECs were isolated from adult mice and identified by Rpe65 expression. The mitochondrial damage was measured by mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Our results showed that high glucose conditions reduce cell viability in RPECs while Vitamin C can restore cell viability, compared to the vehicle treatment. We also demonstrated that Vitamin C reduces hyperglycemia-induced ROS production and prevents cell apoptosis in RPECs in an AR-independent pathway. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that Vitamin C is not only a nutritional necessity but also an adjuvant that can be combined with AR inhibitors for alleviating hyperglycemic stress in RPECs.

Vitamin C (VC), also known as ascorbic acid, plays a crucial role as a water-soluble nutrient within the human body, contributing to a variety of metabolic processes. Research findings suggest that increased doses of VC demonstrate potential anti-tumor capabilities. This review delves into the mechanisms of VC absorption and its implications for cancer management. Building upon these foundational insights, we explore modern delivery systems for VC, evaluating its use in diverse cancer treatment methods. These include starvation therapy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT), electrothermal therapy, immunotherapy, cellular reprogramming, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and various combination therapies.

Scurvy is an infrequent pathological condition resulting from a sustained dietary vitamin C deficiency. Radiology becomes pivotal because the diagnostic process for scurvy can be intricate, given its resemblance to bone neoplasms. A 6-year-old boy, reported persistent pain and swelling in the right thigh for 2 months prior to hospitalization. Clinical examination revealed a mass localized in the right thigh and anemia. A radiograph of the right femur demonstrated extensive osteopenic changes, "Trümmerfeld zone", "Frankel line", "Pelkin fracture", "Wimberger ring sign", and para-epiphyseal subperiosteal hematoma. The absence of any such cases in our institution over the preceding decade emphasizes the uniqueness of this presentation. Histopathological evaluation yielded atypical results, prompting further radiographic assessment of the left femur and thorax. The subsequent findings corroborated the classic "scorbutic rosary" presentation, indicative of scurvy. The patient's symptoms gradually resolved with high-dose supplementation of vitamin C. Scurvy predominantly presents with musculoskeletal manifestations. Plasma vitamin C level assessment is the gold standard for the diagnosis, but it is currently inaccessible in our nation. Consequently, radiographic evaluation reveals pathognomonic features of the disorder. In thoracic radiographs, the "scorbutic rosary" presentation is evident. In contrast, long bones exhibit hallmarks of scurvy: diffuse osteopenia, "Frankel line", "Trümmerfeld zone", "Pelkin fracture", "Wimberger ring sign", and para-epiphyseal subperiosteal hematoma. Prompt intervention with vitamin C thwarts the progression to severe complications. Radiology is an indispensable tool in diagnosing pediatric scurvy, especially in developmental countries where the assessment of vitamin C serum levels is inaccessible.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C deficiency, or scurvy, is rare but poses risks for children with poor diets, limited resources, or malabsorption issues. It may also be common in children with restrictive or selective dietary habits in children with global developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, and physical disabilities. Symptoms include fatigue, irritability, joint and muscle pain, joint swellings, edema, swollen gums, easy bruising, and delayed wound healing. Early recognition and prompt intervention are essential to prevent the progression of symptomatic vitamin C deficiency in children. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 13-year-old boy with developmental delay secondary to Lennox Gastaut syndrome referred for suspected recurrent, severe, and atypical IgA vasculitis. He presented with irritability, loss of appetite, petechial and ecchymotic lower limb lesions, unilateral gum swelling, severe arthritis, peripheral oedema, severe weight loss, anaemia, and raised inflammatory markers. Multiple investigations were performed before the diagnosis of scurvy was made. A surgical finding of friable gingival tissue with multiple loose teeth, a skin biopsy with follicular hyperkeratosis and extravasated perifollicular red blood cells, and a typical X-ray finding led to the diagnosis of scurvy. CONCLUSION: Scurvy should be given careful consideration as a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with musculoskeletal issues, mucocutaneous complaints, and constitutional symptoms such as malaise, asthenia, irritability, and loss of appetite. A focused and detailed dietary history looking for a lack of good sources of vitamin C can be an easy indicator of this differential. Imaging studies revealing the typical features can also help make the diagnosis. Pathology of the skin revealing pathognomonic features can add to the certainty of the diagnosis. In the absence of all else, the rapid response to treatment with an appropriate dose of vitamin C has a diagnostic and therapeutic role.
