RESUMEN

MN1 C-terminal truncation (MCTT) syndrome was first reported in 2020 and only 28 patients have been recorded to date. Since MCTT syndrome is a newly defined and rare syndrome with many clinical features, the present study reviewed the manifestations and management of oral and dental anomalies. Gene variants of MCTT syndrome and their positive phenotypes were summarised. The phenotypes of variants in two exons differed from each other mainly in the craniomaxillofacial region, including brain MRI abnormalities and palatal morphology. Pathogenic mechanisms, especially in craniofacial and oral anomalies, were discussed. Appropriate treatments in the stomatology and respiratory departments could improve the symptoms of MCTT syndrome. The different sites of MN1 gene variants may influence the clinical symptoms and there may be racial differences in MCTT syndrome. We recommend oral and pulmonary evaluations for the multidisciplinary treatment of MCTT syndrome.

Anatomical education is pivotal for medical students, and innovative technologies like augmented reality (AR) are transforming the field. This study aimed to enhance the interactive features of the AEducAR prototype, an AR tool developed by the University of Bologna, and explore its impact on human anatomy learning process in 130 second-year medical students at the International School of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Bologna. An interdisciplinary team of anatomists, maxillofacial surgeons, biomedical engineers, and educational scientists collaborated to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the study's objectives. Students used the updated version of AEducAR, named AEducAR 2.0, to study three anatomical topics, specifically the orbit zone, facial bones, and mimic muscles. AEducAR 2.0 offered two learning activities: one explorative and one interactive. Following each activity, students took a test to assess learning outcomes. Students also completed an anonymous questionnaire to provide background information and offer their perceptions of the activity. Additionally, 10 students participated in interviews for further insights. The results demonstrated that AEducAR 2.0 effectively facilitated learning and students' engagement. Students totalized high scores in both quizzes and declared to have appreciated the interactive features that were implemented. Moreover, interviews shed light on the interesting topic of blended learning. In particular, the present study suggests that incorporating AR into medical education alongside traditional methods might prove advantageous for students' academic and future professional endeavors. In this light, this study contributes to the growing research emphasizing the potential role of AR in shaping the future of medical education.

INTRODUCTION: Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) are integral to oncology management, involving specialised healthcare professionals who collaborate to develop individualised treatment plans for patients. However, as cancer care grows more complex, MDTs must continually adapt to better address patient needs. This scoping review will explore barriers and challenges MDTs have encountered in the past decade; and propose strategies for optimising their utilisation to overcome these obstacles and improve patient care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The scoping review will follow Arksey and O'Malley's framework and begin with a literature search using keywords in electronic databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and PsychINFO, covering the period from January 2013 to December 2022 and limited to English language publications. Four independent reviewers will screen titles and abstracts based on predefined inclusion criteria, followed by full-text review of selected titles. Relevant references cited in the publications will also be examined. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses flow diagram will be utilised to illustrate the methodology. Data from selected publications will be extracted, analysed, and categorised for further analysis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The results of the scoping review will provide a comprehensive overview of the barriers and challenges encountered by oncology MDTs over the past decade. These findings will contribute to the existing literature and provide insights into areas that require improvement in the functioning of MDTs in oncology management. The results will be disseminated through publication in a scientific journal, which will help to share the findings with the wider healthcare community and facilitate further research and discussion in this field. TRIAL REGISTRATION DETAILS: The protocol for this scoping review is registered with Open Science Framework, available at DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/R3Y8U.

AIM: This short overview aims to concisely outline the most important gynecological issues from a predominantly operative point of view, which could also be relevant for general and abdominal surgeons as well as important gynecological aspects of primarily visceral surgical pathologies. METHOD: Narrative review on the topic of interdisciplinary cooperation in gynecological/general and abdominal surgery through the use of PubMed® as well as the Cochrane Library with search terms, such as "operative profile of abdominal surgery and gynecology", "interdisciplinary surgery aspects of gynecology/abdominal surgery" as well as "interdisciplinary surgical approach-surgical complication". RESULTS (MAIN POINTS): As the close anatomical relationship suggests, numerous primarily gynecological pathologies can also occur in abdominal organs. Likewise, predominantly surgical pathologies can result in involvement of gynecological organs. This can make an intraoperative collaboration necessary. In addition, as a result of diagnostic uncertainty or within the context of complications, interdisciplinary collaboration can also be required preoperatively and postoperatively. Multidisciplinary knowledge as well as close cooperation of the involved specialties can improve the outcome of affected patients. CONCLUSION: Many pathologies extend not only to the boundaries of an individual discipline but can also affect physiological systems exceeding those limits. Therefore, for an optimal treatment it is necessary to be aware of such aspects of the diseases and to establish structured procedures for interdisciplinary cooperation.

BACKGROUND: Specialty palliative care interdisciplinary teams (IDT) can play an important role in supporting patients and family members during acute care decision-making. Despite guidelines and evidence emphasizing decision-making support as a key domain of specialty palliative care, little is known about how decision-making support is actually implemented by specialty palliative care IDTs. This study aims to (1) describe the structure and processes of inpatient decision-making support delivered by specialty palliative care IDT, and (2) examine the perspectives of IDT members on their role in this decision-support. METHODS: A team of clinician and non-clinician researchers will conduct non-participant observation ethnography at a single medical center in northern New England. The ethnography will focus on the work of IDT members in supporting decision making, particularly elements of specialty palliative care that have limited descriptions in the literature (e.g. systems and processes of care). Observations of formal and informal interactions between IDT members and clinical encounters will be conducted at one site over four months. Participants include patients, care partners, non-specialty palliative care providers, and specialty palliative care IDT members. Additionally, we will conduct semi-structured interviews with IDT members across three geographically diverse specialty palliative care teams across the United States to explore providers' first-person perspective on their roles and function in decision-making support for hospitalized patients. Field notes and transcripts from observation and interviews will be uploaded to Dedoose software for management and thematic analysis following an inductive approach. DISCUSSION: To our knowledge, this will be the first observational study of the roles of interdisciplinary specialty palliative care teams. Results from this research will support further investigation into implementation of decision-making support across different types of medical teams.

Objetivo: estimular estudantes a serem protagonistas de ações que fomentassem na sua comunidade a popularização das ciências através de oficinas pedagógicas temáticas, colocando-os como construtores dos saberes, assim como, fortalecendo o papel extensionista da Universidade. Método:As atividades tiveram a participação de 80 alunos e foram desenvolvidas no Departamento de Ciências Biológicas (DCBIO) da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), pelos docentes do NUPEECBio, discentes e monitores. Foi realizada na SNCT (2019) com estudantes do Ensino Fundamental (6° e 7° ano) utilizando oficinas multitemáticas em Ciências. Após essa etapa, foram aplicados questionários e a avaliação qualitativa usando a Escala Likert para realizar uma avaliação qualitativa sobre a participação e adesão dos estudantes. Resultados:A análise dos dados em conjunto nos permitiu avaliar o grau de satisfação, percepção e cognição dos estudantes após cada oficina, demonstrando que as estratégias utilizadas foram exitosas. Conclusão:nessa experiência de interface Universidade e Escola básica, foi possível perceber a relevância da junção de atividades teóricas/práticas por meios de oficinas interdisciplinares no despertamento de curiosidade, motivação e receptividade dos estudantes.


Objective: to encourage students to take the lead in actions that would promote the popularization of science in their community through themed pedagogical workshops, placing them as builders of knowledge, as well as strengthening the university's extension role. Method: 80 students took part in the activities, which were carried out at the Department of Biological Sciences (DCBIO) of the State University of Feira de Santana (UEFS) by NUPEECBio teachers, students and monitors. It was held during SNCT (2019) with elementary school students (6th and 7th grade) using multi-thematic science workshops. After this stage, questionnaires and the Likert Scale were applied to carry out a qualitative assessment of student participation and adherence. Results:Analyzing the data together allowed us to assess the degree of satisfaction, perception and cognition of the students after each workshop, demonstrating that the strategies used were successful. Conclusion: in this experience of the interface between university and elementaryschool, it was possible to see the relevance of combining theoretical/practical activities through interdisciplinary workshops in arousing curiosity, motivation and receptivity in the students.

Conclusión: en esta experiencia de interfaz entre la universidad y la escuela primaria, fue posible constatar la importancia de la combinación de actividades teórico/prácticas a través de talleres interdisciplinares para despertar curiosidad, motivacióny receptividad en los alumnos.

A introdução da interdisciplinaridade no meio acadêmico e currículos profissionais fornece uma estrutura para a preparação dos alunos para fazer conexões entre diferentes elos do conhecimento, aparentemente fragmentados (Ashby; Exter, 2019) e aplicá-los a problemas do mundo real.

The present paper introduces soil as a complex system, so a multidisciplinary approach is needed to study not only the composition, abundance, and transport of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial ecosystems but also soil properties and processes involved in their degradation and/or interaction with soil polyphasic matrix. Despite many researchers focusing their studies on the impact of MPs on the terrestrial ecosystem over the past years, little has been done about the use of biochemical indicators to study their effect on soil functionality.

Radical cystectomy is the gold standard for the treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Advanced age is only a relative criterion when selecting patients eligible for radical cystectomy, and to reduce post-operative complications, the management of an elderly patient requires a multidisciplinary approach. The role of the geriatrician is therefore essential, in collaboration with the urologist, to ensure appropriate follow-up. A series of preoperative screening tests should be used to identify frailer patients who are at high risk of developing complications, so that appropriate follow-up can be carried out.


La cystectomie radicale est le traitement de choix du cancer de la vessie musculo-invasif. L'âge avancé ne représente qu'un critère relatif lors de la sélection des patients éligibles à une cystectomie radicale. Afin de réduire les complications postopératoires, la prise en charge d'un patient âgé nécessite une approche multidisciplinaire. Le rôle du gériatre est donc essentiel, en collaboration avec l'urologue, afin d'assurer un suivi approprié. Une série de tests de dépistage préopératoires identifie les patients plus fragiles, présentant un risque accru de complications, et permet de réaliser un suivi adapté.

Categorization is fundamental for spatial and motion representation in both the domain of artificial intelligence and human cognition. In this paper, we investigated whether motion categorizations designed in artificial intelligence can inform human cognition. More concretely, we investigated if such categorizations (also known as qualitative representations) can inform the psychological understanding of human perception and memory of motion scenes. To this end, we took two motion categorizations in artificial intelligence, Motion-RCC and Motion-OPRA1 , and conducted four experiments on human perception and memory. Participants viewed simple motion scenes and judged the similarity of transformed scenes with this reference scene. Those transformed scenes differed in none, one, or both Motion-RCC and Motion-OPRA1 categories. Importantly, we applied an equal absolute metric change to those transformed scenes, so that differences in the similarity judgments should be due only to differing categories. In Experiments 1a and 1b, where the reference stimulus and transformed stimuli were visible at the same time (perception), both Motion-OPRA1 and Motion-RCC influenced the similarity judgments, with a stronger influence of Motion-OPRA1 . In Experiments 2a and 2b, where participants first memorized the reference stimulus and viewed the transformed stimuli after a short blank (memory), only Motion-OPRA1 had marked influences on the similarity judgments. Our findings demonstrate a link between human cognition and these motion categorizations developed in artificial intelligence. We argue for a continued and close multidisciplinary approach to investigating the representation of motion scenes.

Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development and evolution have evolved rapidly over recent years, and the variation from one patient to another is now widely recognized. Consequently, one-size-fits-all approaches to the treatment of cancer have been superseded by precision medicines that target specific disease characteristics, promising maximum clinical efficacy, minimal safety concerns, and reduced economic burden. While precision oncology has been very successful in the treatment of some tumors with specific characteristics, a large number of patients do not yet have access to precision medicines for their disease. The success of next-generation precision oncology depends on the discovery of new actionable disease characteristics, rapid, accurate, and comprehensive diagnosis of complex phenotypes within each patient, novel clinical trial designs with improved response rates, and worldwide access to novel targeted anticancer therapies for all patients. This review outlines some of the current technological trends, and highlights some of the complex multidisciplinary efforts that are underway to ensure that many more patients with cancer will be able to benefit from precision oncology in the near future.

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) application in medicine is a dynamically developing interdisciplinary field. Despite the fact that basics of the plasma phenomenon have been known since the 19th century, growing scientific attention has been paid in recent years to the use of plasma in medicine. Three most important plasma-based effects are pivotal for medical applications: (i) inactivation of a broad spectrum of microorganisms, (ii) stimulation of cell proliferation and angiogenesis with lower plasma treatment intensity, and (iii) inactivation of cells by initialization of cell death with higher plasma intensity. In this review, we explain the underlying chemical processes and reactive species involvement during NTP in human (or animal) tissues, as well as in bacteria inactivation, which leads to sterilization and indirectly supports wound healing. In addition, plasma-mediated modifications of medical surfaces, such as surgical instruments or implants, are described. This review focuses on the existing knowledge on NTP-based in vitro and in vivo studies and highlights potential opportunities for the development of novel therapeutic methods. A full understanding of the NTP mechanisms of action is urgently needed for the further development of modern plasma-based medicine.

The management of prostate cancer is undergoing rapid changes in all disease settings. Novel imaging tools for diagnosis have been introduced, and the treatment of high-risk localized, locally advanced and metastatic disease has changed considerably in recent years. From clinical and health-economic perspectives, a rational and optimal use of the available options is of the utmost importance. While international guidelines list relevant pivotal trials and give recommendations for a variety of clinical scenarios, there is much room for interpretation, and several important questions remain highly debated. The goal of developing a national consensus on the use of these novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in order to improve disease management and eventually patient outcomes has prompted a Swiss consensus meeting. Experts from several specialties, including urology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology and nuclear medicine, discussed and voted on questions of the current most important areas of uncertainty, including the staging and treatment of high-risk localized disease, treatment of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) and use of new options to treat metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).

BACKGROUND: Improving oncology-specific knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals is critical for improving the outcomes of people with cancer. Many current postgraduate education offerings may be inaccessible to busy professionals, contain minimal consumer input or do not focus on the multidisciplinary nature of cancer care. In response to these needs, a Master of Cancer Sciences degree was developed. Our aim is to describe the development of the Master of Cancer Sciences. METHODS: We describe the development of the Master of Cancer Sciences, including its theoretical and its pedagogical underpinnings. RESULTS: Our approach to curriculum design was guided by Kern's Six-Step Approach to Medical Curriculum and underpinned by the Seven Principles of Online Learning. These approaches were further underpinned by the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning which informed our approach to audio and visual information design. The pedagogy is interactive, experiential, interprofessional and importantly, includes consumers as educators. In practice, learning activities include peer feedback, multidisciplinary team meeting simulations, group work and clinical role plays. The online environment was visually shaped through infographics, high-quality educational videos and gamification. CONCLUSION: We have designed a Master of Cancer Sciences that is one of the first wholly online, cancer-specific Masters' programs. Its industry-led curriculum using evidence-based pedagogical choices utilises a range of novel digital formats and integrates the consumer perspective to provide a holistic overview of the field. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of learning outcomes is ongoing.

Esophageal cancer is a severe disease that requires a combined therapeutic approach to improve the prognosis. Once the initial assessment is completed, the patient's case should be discussed in a multidisciplinary conference in a specialized center to decide on an appropriate therapeutic strategy taking into account the stage of the disease and the patient's general condition. Several advances in treatment, both from a surgical technique standpoint, with the advent of minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and from a medical perspective, with the use of immunotherapy under certain conditions, have dramatically improved mortality rates. In this article, we explore the standards and latest innovations in the multimodal treatment of esophageal cancer.


Le cancer de l'œsophage est une pathologie sévère nécessitant une approche thérapeutique combinée afin d'en améliorer le pronostic. Une fois le bilan initial réalisé, le cas du patient doit être discuté lors d'un colloque multidisciplinaire dans un centre spécialisé, afin de décider d'une stratégie thérapeutique adaptée tenant compte du stade de la maladie et de l'état général du patient. Plusieurs avancées en matière de traitement, tant du point de vue technique chirurgical, par l'avènement de la chirurgie minimalement invasive et robotique, que du point de vue médical, par le recours à l'immunothérapie sous certaines conditions, ont permis d'améliorer drastiquement le taux de mortalité. Dans cet article, nous explorons les standards ainsi que les dernières innovations dans le traitement multimodal du cancer de l'œsophage.

Cancers rely on multiple, heterogeneous processes at different scales, pertaining to many biomedical fields. Therefore, understanding cancer is necessarily an interdisciplinary task that requires placing specialised experimental and clinical research into a broader conceptual, theoretical, and methodological framework. Without such a framework, oncology will collect piecemeal results, with scant dialogue between the different scientific communities studying cancer. We argue that one important way forward in service of a more successful dialogue is through greater integration of applied sciences (experimental and clinical) with conceptual and theoretical approaches, informed by philosophical methods. By way of illustration, we explore six central themes: (i) the role of mutations in cancer; (ii) the clonal evolution of cancer cells; (iii) the relationship between cancer and multicellularity; (iv) the tumour microenvironment; (v) the immune system; and (vi) stem cells. In each case, we examine open questions in the scientific literature through a philosophical methodology and show the benefit of such a synergy for the scientific and medical understanding of cancer.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care specialists alone cannot meet the rising needs for palliative care. Primary palliative care, delivered interprofessionally by generalist health professionals, is essential to ensure equitable access. Educational competencies and clinical practice guidelines prepare these clinicians to integrate palliative care principles into practice. PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to evaluate how the AACN Essentials prepares entry-level professional nursing students to function as members of the interdisciplinary primary palliative care team, as described in the National Consensus Project (NCP) for Quality Palliative Care Clinical Practice Guidelines. METHOD: A team of nurse educators utilized a crosswalk mapping process with the Essentials domains, the Competencies and Recommendations for Educating Undergraduate Nursing Students (CARES) statements, and the NCP Guidelines. RESULTS: All eight of the NCP domains align with the Essentials. There were clear areas of overlap between the documents and unique areas of emphasis. CONCLUSION: This project identifies how educational competencies and clinical guidelines can guide competent palliative care practice. It also describes how nurses are prepared to collaborate in the delivery of palliative care.

PROBLEM: Histologic and immunohistologic workup of tumor material from metastases of a previously unknown primary tumor is important for identifying their origin, but is often insufficient for this purpose without clinical oncologic and radiologic evaluation. PROCEDURE: In the initial cancer of unknown primary (CUP) situation, histologic and immunohistochemical workup together with clinicoradiologic correlations contribute significantly to the identification of the primary tumor. There are now accepted guidelines to follow when there is an initial CUP situation. Molecular diagnostic tools can be used to investigate changes at the nucleic acid level, which can provide clues about the primary tumor, including potential targets for therapy. If, despite broad and interdisciplinary diagnostics, it is not possible to identify the primary tumor, the diagnosis is CUP syndrome. If a true CUP situation is present, it is important to assign the tumor to a tumor class or a specific therapy-sensitive subgroup as best as possible so that the best possible treatment can be given. However, for a final assignment to a primary tumor or a final classification as CUP, a comparison with medical oncological and imaging findings is indispensable. CONCLUSION: When CUP is suspected, close interdisciplinary collaboration between pathology, medical oncology, and imaging is essential to achieve a viable classification as CUP or identification of a presumptive primary tumor, in the interest of providing the most specific and effective therapy for affected individuals.

RESUMEN

In 2013, recognizing that Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of death by cancer worldwide and that it was a neglected disease increasing rapidly in Mexico, the community of researchers at the Biomedicine Research Unit of the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Iztacala from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) established an intramural consortium that involves a multidisciplinary group of researchers, technicians, and postgraduate students to contribute to the understanding of this pathology in Mexico. This article is about the work developed by the Mexican Colorectal Cancer Research Consortium (MEX-CCRC): how the Consortium was created, its members, and its short- and long-term goals. Moreover, it is a narrative of the accomplishments of this project. Finally, we reflect on possible strategies against CRC in Mexico and contrast all the data presented with another international strategy to prevent and treat CRC. We believe that the Consortium's characteristics must be maintained to initiate a national strategy, and the reported data could be useful to establish future collaborations with other countries in Latin America and the world.
