BACKGROUND: Swallowing is a complex process that requires the coordination of muscles in the mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus. Dysphagia occurs when a person has difficulty swallowing. In the case of subjects with respiratory diseases, the presence of oropharyngeal dysphagia potentially increases lung disease exacerbations, which can lead to a rapid decline in lung function. This study aimed to analyze the swallowing of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). METHODS: Patients with IPF were evaluated using the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), tongue pressure, the Timed Water Swallow Test (TWST), and the Test of Mastication and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS). The findings were related to dyspnea severity assessed by the modified Medical Research Counsil (mMRC) score; the nutritional status screened with Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool; and pulmonary function tests, specifically spirometry and measurement of the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO), the maximal inspiratory pressure (PImax), and the maximal expiratory pressure (PEmax). RESULTS: The sample consisted of 34 individuals with IPF. Those who exhibited swallowing modifications scored lower on the MNA than those who did not (9.6 ± 0.76 vs. 11.64 ± 0.41 points; mean difference 1.98 ± 0.81 points; p = 0.02). They also showed poorer lung function when considering the predicted force vital capacity (FVC; 81.5% ± 4.61% vs. 61.87% ± 8.48%; mean difference 19.63% ± 9.02%; p = 0.03). The speed of liquid swallowing was altered in 31of 34 of the evaluated subjects (91.1%). The number of liquid swallows correlated significantly with the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/FVC ratio (r = 0.3; p = 0.02). Solid eating and swallowing assessed with the TOMASS score correlated with lung function. The number of chewing cycles correlated negatively with PImax% predicted (r = -0.4; p = 0.0008) and PEmax% predicted (r = -0.3; p = 0.02). FVC% predicted correlated with increased solid swallowing time (r = -0.3; p = 0.02; power = 0.6). Swallowing solids was also impacted by dyspnea. CONCLUSION: Patients with mild-to-moderate IPF can present feeding adaptations, which can be related to the nutritional status, lung function, and the severity of dyspnea.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the impact of EIT-guided yoga breathing training on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) for esophageal cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS Total of 62 patients underwent radical resections of esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer patients were randomized to the standard care group, or the intervention group receiving an additional complete breathing exercise under the guidance of EIT in AICU. Following extubation after the esophagectomy, pulmonary functions were evaluated by EIT with center of ventilation (CoV), dependent silent spaces (DSS), and non-dependent silent spaces (NSS). RESULTS Sixty-one older esophageal cancer patients (31 in the Control group and 30 in the EIT group) were included in the final analysis. Forty-four patients experienced pulmonary complications after esophagectomy, 27 (87.1%) in the Control group and 17 (36.7%) in the EIT group (RR, 0.42 (95% CI: 0.26, 0.69). The most common pulmonary complication was pleural effusion, with an incidence of 30% in the EIT group and 74.2% in the Control group, with RR of 0.40 (95% CI: 0.23, 0.73). Time for the first pulmonary complication was significantly longer in the EIT group than in the Control group (hazard ratio, HR, 0.43; 95% CI 0.21 to 0.87; P=0.019). Patients in the EIT group had significantly higher scores in CoV, DSS, and NSS than in the Control group. CONCLUSIONS Guided by EIT, the addition of the postoperative breathing exercise to the standardized care during AICU could further improve pulmonary function, and reduce postoperative pulmonary complications after esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Today, nanomaterials are broadly used in a wide range of industrial applications. Such large utilization and the limited knowledge on to the possible health effects have raised concerns about potential consequences on human health and safety, beyond the environmental burden. Given that inhalation is the main exposure route, workers exposed to nanomaterials might be at risk of occurrence of respiratory morbidity and/or reduced pulmonary function. However, epidemiological evidence regarding the association between cumulative exposure to nanomaterials and respiratory health is still scarce. This study focused on the association between cumulative exposure to nanomaterials and pulmonary function among 136 workers enrolled in the framework of the European multicentric NanoExplore project. RESULTS: Our findings suggest that, independently of lifelong tobacco smoking, ethnicity, age, sex, body mass index and physical activity habits, 10-year cumulative exposure to nanomaterials is associated to worse FEV1 and FEF25 - 75%, which might be consistent with the involvement of both large and small airway components and early signs of airflow obstruction. We further explored the hypothesis of a mediating effect via airway inflammation, assessed by interleukin (IL-)10, IL-1ß and Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α), all quantified in the Exhaled Breath Condensate of workers. The mediation analysis results suggest that IL-10, TNF-α and their ratio (i.e., anti-pro inflammatory ratio) may fully mediate the negative association between cumulative exposure to nanomaterials and the FEV1/FVC ratio. This pattern was not observed for other pulmonary function parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Safeguarding the respiratory health of workers exposed to nanomaterials should be of primary importance. The observed association between cumulative exposure to nanomaterials and worse pulmonary function parameters underscores the importance of implementing adequate protective measures in the nanocomposite sector. The mitigation of harmful exposures may ensure that workers can continue to contribute productively to their workplaces while preserving their respiratory health over time.

PURPOSE: There is a major epidemic of obesity, and many obese patients suffer from respiratory symptoms and disease. However, limited research explores the associations between abdominal obesity and lung function indices, yielding mixed results. This study aims to analyze the association between waist circumference (WC), an easily measurable marker of abdominal obesity, and lung function parameters in middle-aged and older adults using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: This study utilized data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2012, with a total sample size of 6089 individuals. A weighted multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between WC and three pulmonary function parameters. Additionally, a weighted generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting were applied to capture any potential nonlinear relationship within this association. RESULTS: After considering all confounding variables, it was observed that for each unit increase in WC, in males, Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) increased by 23.687 ml, Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) increased by 12.029 ml, and the FEV1/FVC ratio decreased by 0.140%. In females, an increase in waist circumference by one unit resulted in an FVC increase of 6.583 ml and an FEV1 increase of 4.453 ml. In the overall population, each unit increase in waist circumference led to a FVC increase of 12.014 ml, an FEV1 increase of 6.557 ml, and a decrease in the FEV1/FVC ratio by 0.076%. By constructing a smooth curve, we identified a positive correlation between waist circumference and FVC and FEV1. Conversely, there was a negative correlation between waist circumference and the FEV1/FVC ratio. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that in the fully adjusted model, waist circumference, independent of BMI, positively correlates with FVC and FEV1 while exhibiting a negative correlation with FEV1/FVC among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. These results underscore the importance of considering abdominal obesity as a potential factor influencing lung function in American middle-aged and older adults.

Background: The microbiota-gut-lung axis has elucidated a potential association between gut microbiota and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, there is a paucity of population-level studies with providing robust evidence for establishing causality. This two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis aimed to investigate the causal relationship between the gut microbiota and IPF as well as lung function. Materials and methods: Adhering to Mendel's principle of inheritance, this MR analysis utilized summary-level data from respective genome-wide association studies (GWAS) involving 211 gut microbial taxa, IPF, and lung function indicators such as FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC. A bidirectional two-sample MR design was employed, utilizing multiple MR analysis methods, including inverse variance-weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, and weighted mode. Multivariable MR (MVMR) was used to uncover mediating factors connecting the exposure and outcome. Additionally, comprehensive sensitivity analyses were conducted to ensure the robustness of the results. Results: The MR results confirmed four taxa were found causally associated with the risk of IPF. Order Bifidobacteriales (OR=0.773, 95% CI: 0.610-0.979, p=0.033), Family Bifidobacteriaceae (OR=0.773, 95% CI: 0.610-0.979, p=0.033), and Genus RuminococcaceaeUCG009 (OR=0.793, 95% CI: 0.652-0.965, p=0.020) exerted protective effects on IPF, while Genus Coprococcus2 (OR=1.349, 95% CI: 1.021-1.783, p=0.035) promote the development of IPF. Several taxa were causally associated with lung function, with those in Class Deltaproteobacteria, Order Desulfovibrionales, Family Desulfovibrionaceae, Class Verrucomicrobiae, Order Verrucomicrobiales and Family Verrucomicrobiaceae being the most prominent beneficial microbiota, while those in Family Lachnospiraceae, Genus Oscillospira, and Genus Parasutterella were associated with impaired lung function. As for the reverse analysis, MR results confirmed the effects of FEV1 and FVC on the increased abundance of six taxa (Phylum Actinobacteria, Class Actinobacteria, Order Bifidobacteriales, Family Bifidobacteriaceae, Genus Bifidobacterium, and Genus Ruminiclostridium9) with a boosted level of evidence. MVMR suggested monounsaturated fatty acids, total fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, and ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to total fatty acids as potential mediating factors in the genetic association between gut microbiota and IPF. Conclusion: The current study suggested the casual effects of the specific gut microbes on the risk of IPF and lung function. In turn, lung function also exerted a positive role in some gut microbes. A reasonable dietary intake of lipid substances has a certain protective effect against the occurrence and progression of IPF. This study provides novel insights into the potential role of gut microbiota in IPF and indicates a possible gut microbiota-mediated mechanism for the prevention of IPF.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a severe genetic condition that affects multiple organ systems and imposes a substantial treatment burden. Regarding the lungs and airways, the progressive pathophysiological changes place a significant strain on the musculoskeletal components of the respiratory system for people with CF. This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of manual therapy interventions (MTIs) on thoracic mobility, respiratory muscle strength, lung function, and musculoskeletal pain. METHOD: A study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted with 15 eligible people with CF at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital CF Centre. After an initial set of diagnostic tests at baseline, the participants underwent eight weekly 30-min MTIs. The MTIs included passive joint mobilisation and soft tissue manipulation of primary and secondary anatomical areas of the musculoskeletal respiratory system. On the day of the final intervention, the baseline measurements were repeated. RESULTS: Trends of increased thoracic mobility were observed following the intervention, with a statistically significant increase in respiratory muscle strength. No change in lung function was observed. Musculoskeletal pain before and after the intervention showed a significant decrease in tender points, and all participants reported positive experiences with MTIs. CONCLUSION: MTIs may improve thoracic mobility, alleviate pain, and enhance respiratory muscle strength in people with CF. Further research is needed to confirm their potential role as a CF physiotherapy supplement. CLINICAL TRIAL ID: NCT04696198.

Assessment of lung function is an important clinical tool for the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In mice, lung function maneuvers use algorithm-based ventilation strategies including forced oscillation technique (FOT), negative pressure-driven forced expiratory (NPFE) and pressure-volume (PV) maneuvers via the FlexiVent system. This lung function test (LFT) is usually performed as end-point measurement only, requiring several mice for each time point to be analyzed. Repetitive lung function maneuvers would allow monitoring of a disease process within the same individual while reducing the numbers of laboratory animals. However, its feasibility in mice and impact on developing lung fibrosis has not been studied so far. Using orotracheal cannulation without surgical exposure of the trachea, we examined the tolerability to repetitive lung function maneuvers (up to four times) in one and the same mouse, both under healthy conditions and in a model of AdTGF-ß1 induced lung fibrosis. In essence, we found that repetitive invasive lung function maneuvers were well tolerated and did not accentuate experimental lung fibrosis in mice. This study contributes to the 3R principle aiming to reduce the numbers of experimental animals used in biomedical research.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the effects of ward noise reduction administration on the lung function and mental health of patients with lung cancer. METHODS: A total of 195 patients who underwent lung cancer surgery in PLA Northern Theater Command Air Force Hospital from November 2020 to November 2022 were selected to be divided into a control group (routine nursing) and an observation group (routine nursing and ward noise reduction administration) in accordance with the medical record system. The general demographic data, noise level, lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV1/FVC)), and complications of patients in the two groups were collected. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline data of the two groups, and t-test and chi-square test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: After PSM was conducted, 50 patients were enrolled in each group. No statistical difference was found in the baseline data, preadministration noise levels, and FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC, state-anxiety inventory (S-AI), and trait anxiety inventory scale (T-AI) scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). After ward noise reduction was administered, the noise level in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC scores of the observation group were higher than those of the control group but were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The S-AI and T-AI scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). No differences were found in the complications between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Administering ward noise reduction in patients with lung cancer can alleviate their negative emotions, thus worthy of clinical adoption.

Background: Low lung function is associated with an increased risk of age-related diseases. However, the relationship between age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness, and lung function remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether low lung function increases the risk of AMD and the potential mechanisms behind this association. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort analysis of 409 230 UK Biobank participants with completed lung function after excluding individuals with AMD. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the risk of AMD incidence and mediation models to explore potential mechanisms driven by inflammatory markers, erythrocyte-related measures, and metabolites. Results: Overall, 6477 AMD cases were diagnosed across an average of 12.4 years of follow-up. Participants with low lung function had an increased risk of developing AMD compared to those with high lung function (forced vital capacity: adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 1.20 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.07-1.34); forced expiratory volume in one second: aHR = 1.32 (95% CI = 1.18-1.47); peak expiratory flow: aHR = 1.32 (95% CI = 1.20-1.45)). Inflammatory markers and erythrocyte-related measures mediated this relationship, acting as a pathway through which low lung function influenced AMD. The interactions of body mass index (BMI), sex, and smoking were significant and the effect of lung function on AMD was higher in men, obese, and smoking populations. Conclusions: The increased risk of AMD was associated with low lung function, with inflammatory and erythrocyte-related markers mediating this relationship. This suggests that improvements in lung function could reduce the risk of AMD, thereby promoting health and longevity.

OBJECTIVE: A low expression of club cell secretory protein (CC16) and high levels of proinflammatory cytokines at preterm birth are associated with airway inflammation and more severe neonatal lung disease. The present study aimed to investigate if low levels of CC16, proinflammatory cytokines and vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) in tracheal aspirate early after birth were associated with lung function impairment at school age. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants were 20 children, born very preterm (median gestational age 25+3 weeks+days, IQR: 24+1-27+0 weeks+days), who had tracheal aspirates collected during mechanical ventilation in their first day of life. CC16, cytokines, VEGF and matrix metalloproteinase-9 were measured in the tracheal aspirate and later correlated to results from advanced lung function measurements at 12 years of age. RESULTS: Low levels of CC16 and high levels of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1ß and TNF-α in tracheal aspirate were associated with airway obstruction at school age but not with other lung function parameters. The correlation with airway obstruction was even stronger when the ratio between the respective proinflammatory cytokine and CC16 was used. In addition, low levels of VEGF and CC16 were associated with impaired diffusion capacity of the lung. CONCLUSIONS: An imbalance in inflammatory mediators and growth factors in the lungs at birth may have consequences for airway function and vasculature at school age in preterm born children.

PURPOSE: Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) belong to lung function injury. PRISm is a precursor to COPD. We compared and evaluated the different basic information, imaging findings and survival curves of 108 lung cancer patients with different pulmonary function based on high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). METHODS: This retrospective study was performed on 108 lung cancer patients who did pulmonary function test (PFT) and thoracic HRCT. The basic information was evaluated: gender, age, body mass index (BMI), smoke, smoking index (SI). The following pulmonary function findings were evaluated: forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC ratio. The following computed tomography (CT) findings were evaluated: appearance (bronchiectasis, pneumonectasis, atelectasis, ground-glass opacities [GGO], interstitial inflammation, thickened bronchial wall), diameter (aortic diameter, pulmonary artery diameter, MPAD/AD ratio, inferior vena cava diameter [IVCD]), tumor (volume, classification, distribution, staging [I, II, III, IV]). Mortality rates were calculated and survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: Compared with normal pulmonary function group, PRISm group and COPD group were predominantly male, older, smoked more, poorer lung function and had shorter survival time after diagnosis. There were more abnormal images in PRISm group and COPD group than in normal lung function group (N-C group). In PRISm group and COPD group, lung cancer was found late, and the tumor volume was larger, mainly central squamous carcinoma. But the opposite was true for the N-C group. The PRISm group and COPD group had significant poor survival probability compared with the normal lung function group. CONCLUSIONS: Considerable differences regarding basic information, pulmonary function, imaging findings and survival curves are found between normal lung function group and lung function injury group. Lung function injury (PRISm and COPD) should be taken into account in future lung cancer screening studies.

AIM: The primary aim of our study was to measure the effect of conventional open thyroidectomy performed for patients with multinodular goiter (MNG) on pulmonary volumes measured with respiratory function tests independent from surgical indications. A secondary aim was to determine whether there was a significant improvement in the complaints due to obstructive symptoms after MNG surgeries. METHODS: This study was conducted between October 2020 and June 2022. Patients who were hospitalized to undergo surgery for giant multinodular goiter were prospectively included in the study. Patients were questioned about complaints of pressure, hoarseness, dyspnea, sleep apnea, snoring, and dysphagia before the surgery and during the follow-up 6 months after surgery. In addition, pulmonary function tests were performed preoperatively, 48 hours after surgery and 6 months after surgery. Forced expiratory volume in 0.5 seconds forced expiratory volume in 1 second and forced vital capacity values in pulmonary function test (PFT) measurements were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 55 patients, 42 females and 13 males, mean age 49.54 ± 13.6 years, were included in the study. Although there was a significant decrease in clinical symptoms caused by the thyroid volume within 6 months in patients who were operated for giant MNG there was no significant change in pulmonary function tests. There was a positive correlation between the thyroid volume and nodule weight in patients with MNG. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that it is not necessary to follow up with patients without obstructive findings in preoperative pulmonary function tests with pulmonary function tests in the postoperative period.

PURPOSE: Obesity exerts negative effects on pulmonary function through proven mechanical and biochemical pathways. Multiple studies have suggested that bariatric surgery can improve lung function. However, the timing of these effects on lung function and its association with patient reported outcomes is not known. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study of patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) at a tertiary care hospital was undertaken. Spirometry tests, laboratory tests, and self-reported questionnaires on asthma symptoms and asthma control (ACQ and ACT) were administered. All data were recorded pre-operatively (T0) and every 3 months post-operatively for 1 year (T3, T6, T9, T12) and were compared using a mixed-models approach for repeated measures. RESULTS: For the 23 participants, mean age was 44.2 ± 12.3 years, mean BMI was 45.2 ± 7.2 kg/m2, 18(78%) were female, 9(39%) self-reported as non-white and 6(26%) reported to have asthma. Following LSG, % total body weight loss was significant at all follow-up points (P < 0.0001). Rapid improvement in forced expiratory volume (FEV)% predicted and forced vital capacity (FVC)% predicted was seen at T3. Although the overall ACQ and ACT score remained within normal range throughout the study, shortness of breath declined significantly at 3 months post-op (P < 0.05) and wheezing resolved for all patients by twelve months. Patients also reported reduced frequency of sleep interruption and inability to exercise by the end of the study (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Improvements in objective lung function assessments and patient-reported respiratory outcomes begin as early as 3 months and continue until 12 months after sleeve gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Metal(oid)s have been cross-sectionally associated with lung function outcomes in childhood but there is limited data on their combined effects starting in utero. Child sex may further modify these effects. OBJECTIVE: Examine associations between in utero and early life exposure to metals assessed via novel dentine biomarkers and childhood lung function and explore effect modification by child sex. METHODS: Analyses included 291 children enrolled in the Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment and Social Stressors (PROGRESS) study, a longitudinal birth cohort study in Mexico City. Weekly dentine levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) were measured from 15 weeks pre-birth to 15 weeks post birth in deciduous children's teeth. Lung function was tested at ages 8-14 years and then modeled as age, height and sex adjusted z-scores. Associations were modeled using lagged weighted quantile sum (LWQS) regression to evaluate the potential for a time-varying mixture effect adjusting for maternal age and education at enrollment and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in pregnancy. Models were also stratified by sex. RESULTS: We identified a window of susceptibility at 12-15 weeks pre-birth in which the metal mixture was associated with lower FVC z-scores in children aged 8-14 years. Cd and Mn were the largest contributors to the mixture effect (70 %). There was also some evidence of effect modification by sex, in which the mean weights and weighted correlations over the identified window was more evident in males when compared to females. In the male stratum, Cd, Mn and additionally Pb also dominated the mixture association. CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal metal(oid) exposure was associated with lower lung function in childhood. These findings underscore the need to consider both mixtures and windows of susceptibility to fully elucidate effects of prenatal metal(oid) exposure on childhood lung function.

Patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) can present with respiratory dysfunction, ranging from exercise intolerance to overt respiratory failure, increased fatigue, or sleep-disordered breathing. To investigate the value of multiple respiratory tests in MG, we performed clinical and respiratory assessments in patients with mild to moderate generalized disease. One-hundred and thirty-six patients completed the myasthenia gravis quality-of-life score(MG-QOL-15), myasthenia gravis impairment index(MGII), Epworth sleepiness scale(ESS), University of California-San Diego Shortness of Breath Questionnaire(UCSD-SOB), Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scales(MRC-DS), supine and upright forced vital capacity(FVC), maximal inspiratory pressures(MIPs) and sniff nasal inspiratory pressures(SNIP). Seventy-three (54 %) had respiratory and/or bulbar symptoms and 45 (33 %) had baseline abnormal FVC, with no significant postural changes (p = 0.89); 55 (40.4 %) had abnormal MIPs and 50 (37 %) had abnormal SNIPs. Overall, there were low scores on respiratory and disability scales. Females had increased odds of presenting with abnormal FVC (OR 2.89, p = 0.01) and MIPs (OR 2.48, p = 0.022). There were significant correlations between MIPs, FVC and SNIPs; between MGII/MG-QOL15 and UCSD-SOB/MRC-DS and between ESS and respiratory scales in the whole group. Our data suggests that office-based respiratory measurements are a useful screening method for stable MG patients, even when presenting with minimal respiratory symptoms and no significant disability.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality of life before and after video-assisted thoracoscopic plication of relaxed dome of diaphragm. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 17 patients operated on for unilateral relaxation of diaphragm. We analyzed quality of life in preoperative period, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery using the SF-36 and EuroQ-5D-5L questionnaires. To assess the impact of abnormality on respiratory function, we estimated diaphragm position, spirometry data and SGRQ scores. RESULTS: FVC increased by 16.5% after 1 month, 19.5% after 6 months and 20.1% after 12 months. In addition, FEV1 significantly increased (by 12.6% after 1 month, 10.1% after 6 months and 12.7% after 12 months). Mean values of diaphragm elevation in postoperative period decreased by 25.5-25.6%. According to the SF-36 and EuroQ-5D-5L questionnaires, physical and psychological health components significantly increased within a month after surgical treatment. According to the SGRQ questionnaire, influence of disease on overall status decreased a month after surgery as evidences by lower total score (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Objective and survey data revealed significant improvement in quality of life after surgery. A trend towards higher quality of life was demonstrated by all questionnaires in a month after surgery.

The study's objective was to determine the air quality in an asbestos-related industry and its impact on current workers' respiratory health. Seventy-seven air and 65 dust samples were collected at 5-day intervals in an asbestos roofing sheets production factory in Sri Lanka having two production facilities. Sampling was performed in ten sites: Defective sheets-storage, Production-plant, Pulverizer, Cement-silo, and Loading-area. A detailed questionnaire and medical screening were conducted on 264 workers, including Lung Function Tests (LFT) and chest X-rays. Asbestos fibres were observed in deposited dust samples collected from seven sites. Free chrysotile fibres were absent in the breathing air samples. Scanning Electron Microscopy confirmed the presence of asbestos fibres, and the Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis revealed Mg, O, and Si in depositions. The average concentrations of trace metals were Cd-2.74, Pb-17.18, Ni-46.68, Cr-81.01, As-7.12, Co-6.77, and Cu-43.04 mg/kg. The average Zn, Al, Mg, and Fe concentrations were within 0.2-163 g/kg. The highest concentrations of PM2.52.5 and PM1010, 258 and 387 µg/m3, respectively, were observed in the Pulverizer site. Forty-four workers had respiratory symptoms, 64 presented LFT abnormalities, 5 indicated chest irregularities, 35.98% were smokers, and 37.5% of workers with abnormal LFT results were smokers. The correlation coefficients between LFT results and work duration with respiratory symptoms and work duration and chest X-ray results were 0.022 and 0.011, respectively. In conclusion, most pulmonary disorders observed cannot directly correlate to Asbestos exposure due to negligible fibres in breathing air, but fibres in the depositions and dust can influence the pulmonary health of the employees.

Background: Occupational health is closely related to harmful factors in the workplace. Dust is the primary contributing factor causing impaired lung ventilation function among employees with dust exposure, and their lung ventilation function may also be influenced by other factors. We aimed at assessing the status and influencing factors of lung ventilation function among employees exposed to dust in the enterprises of the Eighth Division located in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), China. Methods: Employees exposed to dust in enterprises of the Eighth Division located in the XPCC in 2023 were selected as the subjects of this cross-sectional study. Their lung ventilation function indicators were extracted from health examination records, and an on-site electronic questionnaire survey was conducted among them. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the factors influencing lung ventilation function. Results: According to the fixed value criteria, the abnormal rates of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC were 31.6, 1.4, and 0.4%, respectively. The lower limit of normal (LLN) criteria could overestimate the rate of abnormal lung ventilation function. Several factors were related to impaired lung ventilation function, including gender, age, education level, marital status, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, physical activity, the type of dust, industry, enterprise scale, occupation, length of service, working shift, monthly income, and respiratory protection. Conclusions: A relatively low abnormal rate of lung ventilation function was observed among employees exposed to dust in enterprises of the Eighth Division, XPCC, and their lung ventilation function was associated with various factors. Effective measures should be taken urgently to reduce the effects of adverse factors on lung ventilation function, thereby further protecting the health of the occupational population.
