RESUMEN

This study induced biological stress in Sorbus pohuashanensis suspension cell(SPSC) with yeast extract(YE) as a bio-tic elicitor and isolated and identified secondary metabolites of triterpenoids produced under stress conditions. Twenty-six triterpenoids, including fifteen ursane-type triterpenoids(1-15), two 18,19-seco-ursane-type triterpenoids(16-17), four lupine-type triterpenoids(18-21), two cycloartane-type triterpenoids(22-23), and three squalene-type triterpenoids(24-26), were isolated and purified from the methanol extract of SPSC by chromatography on silica gel, MCI, Sephadex LH-20, and MPLC. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses. All triterpenoids were isolated from SPSC for the first time and 22-O-acetyltripterygic acid A(1) was identified as a new compound. Selected compounds were evaluated for antifungal, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory activities, and compound 1 showed an inhibitory effect on NO production in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells.

Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz has a rich history of versatile applications spanning the fields of medicine and nutrition. It is noteworthy that the decoction obtained from S. torminalis leaves is a traditional treatment method against both diabetes and stomach disorders. Phytochemical profiling determined by HPLC/MS-MS. The effects of the extracts on cell viability were investigated using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) method against MDA-MB-231 cell line (human breast adenocarcinoma).The ethanol/water extract contained more concentration of total phenolic (91.41 mg gallic acid (GAE) equivalent /gr) and flavanoid (29.10 mg rutin (RE) equivalent/gr) in the tested extract (p<0.05). Resulting of HPLC analysis, the chemical constituents varied depending on the solvents and chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, isoquercetin, delphindin-3,5-diglucoside, procyanidin B2, epicatechin, neochlorogenic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid were identified in all extracts. Overall, ethanol, n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts showed the highest inhibition for the tyrosinase enzyme. The effect of leaf extracts of S. torminalis on antimicrobial, biofilm inhibitory, and anticancer activities was examined. Based on outcomes of our study recognize this plant as a critical source of medically active chemicals for feasible phytopharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications, providing the first scientific insight into the detailed biological and chemical profiles of S. torminalis.

Plant polyphenols are characterized by a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant properties, and have a high geroprotective potential. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of the extract of rowan berries (Sorbus aucuparia L.) on the lifespan and stress resistance of Drosophila melanogaster with the identification of possible mechanisms of its biological activity. It has been established that an ethanol extract of S. aucuparia berries, the main components of which are rutin and cyanidin-3-rutinoside, has a pronounced antioxidant activity in vitro. At the same time, treatment with rowan berry extract increased the resistance of D. melanogaster males to starvation, but reduced resistance to hyperthermia. In females, the extract reduced resistance to oxidative stress but increased resistance to hyperthermia. The effects of rowan berry extract on longevity depended both on its concentration and on the sex of fruit flies. In response to treatment with rowan berry extract, D. melanogaster males and females showed slight differences in the background level of expression of cellular stress response genes, including heat shock genes (hsp27, hsp68, and hsp83), oxidative stress resistance genes (hif1, nrf2, and sod1), circadian rhythm genes (clk and per), and the longevity gene sirt1, which may explain the differences in the observed effects.

In spite of its well-known nephrotoxicity, gentamicin is nonetheless routinely used in humans and animals. However, no adjuvant treatments have been implemented to mitigate this harmful effect. Given this concern, medicinal plants represent a significant reservoir of natural antioxidants that could potentially reduce the renal oxidative stress induced by gentamicin. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to investigate the nephroprotective properties of Cornus mas and Sorbus aucuparia fruits in an experimental model of nephrotoxicity. The 3-week study was performed on male Wistar rats, which were randomly divided into six experimental groups, being subcutaneously treated with 50 mg/kg gentamicin and orally given Cornus mas and Sorbus aucuparia extracts, in doses of 40 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg, respectively. Antioxidant therapy significantly improved the nitro-oxidative stress parameters as well as the specific renal biomarkers KIM-1 and iNAG, demonstrating a considerable renal tubular protective impact. These outcomes were reinforced by biochemical and histopathological enhancements. Nevertheless, neither of the tested extracts succeeded in substantially diminishing BUN levels. Additionally, CysC did not significantly decline following extracts treatment, suggesting that the remedies did not effectively protect renal glomeruli against gentamicin stress. Future studies are required in order to determine the underlying mechanisms of these berries.

Saline-alkali stress is a major environmental stress affecting the growth and development of plants such as Sorbus pohuashanensis. Although ethylene plays a crucial role in plant response to saline-alkaline stress, its mechanism remains elusive. The mechanism of action of ethylene (ETH) may be related to the accumulation of hormones, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Ethephon is the exogenous ethylene donor. Therefore, for the present study we initially used different concentrations of ethephon (ETH) to treat S. pohuashanensis embryos and identified the best treatment concentration and method to promote the release of dormancy and the germination of S. pohuashanensis embryos. We then analyzed the physiological indexes, including endogenous hormones, ROS, antioxidant components, and reactive nitrogen, in embryos and seedlings to elucidate the mechanism via which ETH manages stress. The analysis showed that 45 mg/L was the best concentration of ETH to relieve the embryo dormancy. ETH at this concentration improved the germination of S. pohuashanensis by 183.21% under saline-alkaline stress; it also improved the germination index and germination potential of the embryos. Further analysis revealed that ETH treatment increased the levels of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), gibberellin (GA), soluble protein, nitric oxide (NO), and glutathione (GSH); increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), nitrate reductase (NR), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS); and decreased the levels of abscisic acid (ABA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion, and malondialdehyde (MDA) of S. pohuashanensis under saline-alkali stress. These results indicate that ETH mitigates the inhibitory effects of saline-alkali stress and provides a theoretical basis by which to establish precise control techniques for the release of seed dormancy of tree species.

BACKGROUND: Sorbus sensu stricto (Sorbus s.s.) is a genus with important economical values because of its beautiful leaves, and flowers and especially the colorful fruits. It belongs to the tribe Maleae of the family Rosaceae, and comprises about 90 species mainly distributed in China. There is on-going dispute about its infrageneric classification and species delimitation as the species are morphologically similar. With the aim of shedding light on the circumscription of taxa within the genus, phylogenetic analyses were performed using 29 Sorbus s.s. chloroplast (cp) genomes (16 newly sequenced) representing two subgenera and eight sections. RESULTS: The 16 cp genomes newly sequenced range between 159,646 bp and 160,178 bp in length. All the samples examined and 22 taxa re-annotated in Sorbus sensu lato (Sorbus s.l.) contain 113 unique genes with 19 of these duplicated in the inverted repeat (IR). Six hypervariable regions including trnR-atpA, petN-psbM, rpl32-trnL, trnH-psbA, trnT-trnL and ndhC-trnV were screened and 44-53 SSRs and 14-31 dispersed repeats were identified as potential molecular markers. Phylogenetic analyses under ML/BI indicated that Sorbus s.l. is polyphyletic, but Sorbus s.s. and the other five segregate genera, Aria, Chamaemespilus, Cormus, Micromeles and Torminalis are monophyletic. Two major clades and four sub-clades resolved with full-support within Sorbus s.s. are not consistent with the existing infrageneric classification. Two subgenera, subg. Sorbus and subg. Albocarmesinae are supported as monophyletic when S. tianschanica is transferred to subg. Albocarmesinae from subg. Sorbus and S. hupehensis var. paucijuga transferred to subg. Sorbus from subg. Albocarmesinae, respectively. The current classification at sectional level is not supported by analysis of cp genome phylogeny. CONCLUSION: Phylogenomic analyses of the cp genomes are useful for inferring phylogenetic relationships in Sorbus s.s. Though genome structure is highly conserved in the genus, hypervariable regions and repeat sequences used are the most promising molecule makers for population genetics, species delimitation and phylogenetic studies.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of widely grown fruits (wild roses, elderberries, sea buckthorns, rowans, chokeberries, and hawthorns) as a functional ingredient in wheat-flour cookie formulation on antioxidative properties with a simultaneous reduction of the carcinogen-like compound acrylamide. The organoleptic features of the cookies were assessed by a panel of consumers. The following parameters were measured: chemical composition, total polyphenols, polyphenolic profile, antioxidant activity, and acrylamide content. The overall ratings of the tested cookies with the addition of chokeberries, hawthorns, sea buckthorns, and elderberries were more than satisfactory, while wild rose and rowan cookies were the most widely accepted and best rated by the panelists. The antioxidant activity of the tested cookies was 1.1−15.22 µmol trolox·g−1 dm and 2.46−26.12 µmol Fe (II)·g−1 dm as measured by the ABTS and FRAP methods, respectively. All the fruit-enriched cookies had significantly higher antioxidative properties (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control cookies, but among the fruit-enriched cookies, there were differences in the quality and quantity of particular polyphenols. The acrylamide content was significantly decreased by 59% (hawthorn), 71% (rowan), 87% (wild rose), 89% (sea buckthorn), 91% (elderberry), and 94% (chokeberry) compared with the control cookies (p < 0.05). Cookies enriched with wild-grown fruits could constitute a promising novel snack food.

In the current study, the fruits of a popular ornamental tree, Sorbus intermedia, were investigated phytochemically and biologically as potential source of bioactive triterpenes. Six terpenoids were isolated and examined with respect to their cytotoxic activity using a broad screening in vitro model and multivariate analysis for better demonstration of the effects on cancer cells. This chemometric approach allowed us to confirm that the structural characteristics of the compounds significantly affected their impact on cell lines. Ursolic acid was found to be the most potent cytotoxic agent with IC50 predominantly < 10 µg/mL after 24 h of incubation. Its 3-acetoxy derivative was less active, however, an improvement in selectivity with regard to prostate panel was observed. Reduction of the carboxylic moiety at C28, as well as introduction of the hydroxyl group at 19α position led to complete loss of cytotoxic activity.

Firstly, the antioxidant capacity of total flavonoids that was extracted from Sorbus pohuashanensis (Hance) Hedl was determined by ABTS+·radical-scavenging method, and MTT assay was used to mensurate the anti-tumor activity of total flavonoids In Vitro. Subsequently, the extraction conditions of flavonoids were optimized by the response surface methodology, the antioxidant activity was investigated simultaneously. Furthermore, the anti-tumor activity mechanism of flavonoids was simulated by molecular docking software. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids was correlated with the content in the process of optimizing the extraction condition. Moreover, The MTT assay revealed that SPF inhibited the activity of four sorts of cancer cells and positively correlated with the concentration of total flavonoids. And the experimental data demonstrated its anticancer activity was better at high concentrations. Finally, its anti-tumor activity was found that may be related to small molecules from flavonoids bind the apoptotic proteins Caspase-3, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9. The study could provide a theoretical basis for further pharmacodynamic research of Sorbus pohuashanensis (Hance) Hedl flavonoids, and improved a valuable attribute to Sorbus pohuashanensis (Hance) Hedl.

The results of studying the effect of the anthocyanin-containing complex from Sorbus aucuparia L. on the main indicators of erythropoiesis in the blood and bone marrow of mice with Lewis lung carcinoma against the background of doxorubicin administration were presented. It was shown that administration of the anthocyanin-containing complex from S. aucuparia L. to animals with the tumor prevented the development of anemic syndrome by promoting regeneration of the erythropoiesis after its depletion caused by single administration of a cytostatic agent.

In this study, two ursane-type triterpenes, i. e., ursolic acid (UA) and 3-O-ß-acetoxyursolic acid (AUA), were isolated and quantified in Sorbus intermedia (EHRH.) PERS. fruits. UA and AUA levels differed slightly throughout fruit maturation, and both triterpenes showed similar dynamics of accumulation with the highest levels found in ripe fruits (up to 6.33±0.56 and 1.17±0.18 mg/g dw. of UA and AUA, respectively). The extracts derived from unripe fruits displayed significant cytotoxic effects against WM793, DU-145, PC3, 8505C, Caco2 and A549 cells, but no correlation between UA and AUA levels and cytotoxicity was found. On the other hand, extracts from mature fruits were not active towards almost all of the tested cell lines. The chemometric approach showed that the extracts derived from fruits harvested earlier clustered to form a clearly distanced group from extracts prepared from more-mature fruits. The extracts at higher concentrations formed separate groups, which indicated the concentration-dependent effect of these extracts on the cells.

Sorbus aucuparia L. is a source of edible fruits appreciated for their nutritional and medicinal properties. In this work some bioactivity mechanisms were evaluated, which might be connected with the traditional application of rowanberries in cardiovascular complications of diabetes. With the use of a panel of chemical and biological in vitro models the rowanberry extracts were proved to significantly inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products, neutralise multiple oxidants generated in vivo, increase the non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity of human plasma and protect plasma components (proteins and lipids) against oxidative/nitrative damage at in vivo-relevant levels (1-5 µg/mL). Moreover, the extracts were found safe in cytotoxicity tests on the peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The comprehensive phytochemical profiling of the extracts (RP/HILIC-UHPLC-PDA-ESI-MS3, HPLC-PDA, and UV-spectrophotometric methods) led to the identification of 51 phenolics, including caffeic and ferulic acids pseudodepsides (34 compounds, prevailing isomers of chlorogenic acid and cynarin, total content up to 269.4 mg/g), flavonols (mostly quercetin glycosides, up to 5.8 mg/g), flavan-3-ol derivatives (proanthocyanidin oligomers and polymers, up to 17.0 mg/g), and simple phenolic acids. The experiments on model constituents of the extracts and correlation studies were used to evaluate contribution of polyphenols to the observed effects. Taking into account the possible additive and synergistic effects, the co-occurrence of various compounds was indicated as partly responsible for biological activity of the fruits. Considering both the composition and activity parameters, the methanol-water (1:1, v/v) extract and its concentrated phenolic fractions appeared to be the most advantageous for biological application.

Recent trends in the food industry combined with novel methods in agriculture could transform rowan into a valuable raw material with potential technological applications. Thus, the aim of this research was to investigate the content of bioactive compounds in its fruits and to assess the color and antioxidant stability of the extracts prepared from such fruits during various thermal treatments and at different pH and ionic strength values. Various spectrophotometric methods, HPLC, and capillary electrophoresis were used to quantify the concentrations of bioactive compounds-polyphenols, carotenoids, organic acids, and to assess antioxidant activity and color. The results show that rowan berries contain circa 1.34-1.47 g/100 g of polyphenols among which include catechin, epicatechin, ferulic acid methyl ester, procyanidin B1, etc.; ca 21.65 mg/100 g of carotenoids including zeaxanthin, ß-cryptoxanthin, all-trans-ß-carotene, and various organic acids such as malic, citric, and succinic, which result in a high antioxidant activity of 5.8 mmol TE/100 g. Results also showed that antioxidant activity exhibited high stability when the extract was subjected to various thermal treatments, pHs, and ionic strengths, while color was mainly impacted negatively when a temperature of 100 °C was employed. This data confirms the technological potential of this traditional, yet often overlooked species.

Eight natural biphenyl-type phytoalexins exhibiting antifungal effect were isolated from the leaves of Sorbus pohuashanensis, which invaded by Alternaria tenuissi, and their growth inhibition rate towards A. tenuissi were 50.3 %, 54.0 %, 66.4 %, 58.8 %, 48.5 %, 51.0 %, 33.3 %, and 37.0 %, respectively. In vivo activity assay verified the protective effect of these natural biphenyls on tobacco leaves. The observation of mycelial morphology revealed that these compounds possessed adverse effects on mycelial growth of A. tenuissi. Subsequently, the most potent active compounds, 3',4',5'-trimethoxy[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-ol (3) and 3,4,4',5-tetramethoxy-1,1'-biphenyl (4), were conducted to the further antifungal evaluation and showed significant activity against the other four crop pathogens, Fusarium graminearum, Helminthosporium maydis, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and Exserohilum turcicum. Further, the structure-activity relationships and biosynthesis of these compounds were speculated in this work.

The fruits of Sorbus pohuashanensis Hedl. (S. pohuashanensis) are rich in polyphenols with many beneficial effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive, anti-asthmatic and anti-cancer. In this study, five polyphenols, including three phenolic acids and two flavonoids, were successfully prepared from the fruits of S. pohuashanensis by high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) using different solvent systems for the first time. Ethyl acetate-n-butanol-water (3.5:1.5:5, v/v) was screened as the two-phase system to separate neochlorogenic acid (1), chlorogenic acid (2), quercetin 3-O-(6″-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-4'″-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl)-ß-D-glucopyranoside (3) and rutin (5). N-hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (1:3:1:3.5, v/v) was first utilized to isolate 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4). The purities of all these compounds were above 95%. In addition, their chemical structures were identified by mass spectrometer (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or the standards. These results indicated that HSCCC was an effective method to separate polyphenols compounds from the fruits of S. pohuashanensis.

Sorbus commixta is a valuable hardwood plant with a high economical value for its medicinal and ornamental qualities. The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of the iron (Fe) source and medium pH on the growth and development of S. commixta in vitro. The Fe sources used, including non-chelated iron sulfate (FeSO4), iron ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Fe-EDTA), and iron diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Fe-DTPA), were supplemented to the Multipurpose medium with a final Fe concentration of 2.78 mg·L-1. The medium without any supplementary Fe was used as the control. The pH of the agar-solidified medium was adjusted to either 4.70, 5.70, or 6.70. The experiment was conducted in a culture room for six weeks with 25 °C day and night temperatures, and a 16-h photoperiod with a light intensity of 50 mmol·m-2·s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Both the Fe source and pH affected the growth and development of the micropropagated plants in vitro. The leaves were greener in the pH 4.70 and 5.70 treatments. The tissue Fe content decreased with the increase of the medium pH. The leaf chlorophyll content was similar between plants treated with FeSO4 and those with Fe-EDTA. The numbers of the shoots and roots of plantlets treated with FeSO4 were 2.5 and 2 times greater than those of the control, respectively. The fresh and dry weights of the shoot and the root were the greatest for plants treated with Fe-EDTA combined with pH 5.70. The calcium, magnesium, and manganese contents in the plantlets increased in the pH 5.70 treatments regardless of the Fe source. Supplementary Fe decreased the activity of ferric chelate reductase. Overall, although the plantlets absorbed more Fe at pH 4.70, Fe-EDTA combined with pH 5.70 was found to be the best for the growth and development of S. commixta in vitro.

In the present work, acetone, ethanol and water extracts of rowanberry (Sorbus aucuparia L.) pomace were evaluated for their antiproliferative, antimicrobial and antioxidative effects. Chemical composition of the extracts was determined by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS and spectrophotometric methods. Neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids were the major phenolic compounds. The water extract contained the highest total proanthocyanidins content (301 ± 18.9 mg/g) and demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity in the all assays (DPPH, FRAP and ORAC). Extracts isolated from rowanberry pomace effectively inhibited the growth of undesirable microorganisms, especially Gram-positive bacteria. Acetone extract was the strongest antimicrobial agent followed by water and ethanol extracts. Acetone and water extracts demonstrated also higher cytotoxic potential in cell viability assays (SRB and MTT) using Caco-2 cells. In general, the results suggest that rowanberry pomace is a promising source of natural compounds with antioxidant and biological activities.

BACKGROUND: Common whitebeam, Sorbus aria (L.) Crantz is an European and Near-Eastern deciduous tree with small red fruits. However, the edible use of this forest fruit is currently not widespread. Also, its nutritional and antioxidative properties remained undiscovered. In this study, the chemical composition and antioxidant properties of common whitebeam fruit were investigated. METHODS: The fruit were collected from Golo Bardo Mountain in Bulgaria. The phytochemical (carotenoids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids), nutritional (moisture, ash, titrable acidity, lipids, proteins, pectin, carbohydrates) and antioxidant activity were evaluated by four assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and CUPRAC). RESULTS: Sugar analysis demonstrated that only fructose and glucose were detected in the fruit. Pectin content did not exceed 1.30%. Moreover, the fruit had a low lipid content (0.80%). The whitebeam fruit were also characterized as a source of carotenoids (1.69 mg/100 g fresh weight, fw), phenolic compounds (32.42 mg GAE/100 g fw), and flavonoids (20.08 mg QE/100 g fw). Among phenolic acids, only 2,4-dihydrohybenzoic, caffeic, p-coumaric, and sinapic acid were detected. The antioxidant potential of the fruit was from 168.52 mM TE/100 g fw (FRAP) to 244.81 mM TE/100 g fw (CUPRAC assay). CONCLUSIONS: The current research enriched the available information about the nutritional potential and chemical composition of common whitebeam fruit and their low sugar content. The absence of sucrose, together with its high phenolic content, demonstrated the potential of this fruit for future application in food products and supplements.

Hybridization associated with polyploidization and apomixis is a frequent mechanism of speciation. Sorbus is a genus with ongoing hybridization resulting in a polyploid complex with different parental lineage. Triparens is the smallest hybridogenous subgenus of Sorbus so far known to comprise only two taxa, S. intermedia and S. × liljeforsii that combine the genomes of three taxa (S. aria agg., S. aucuparia and S. torminalis). To elucidate the origins of S. dacica, S. paxiana and S. tauricola, three new trigenomic candidates formerly believed to be of biparental origin with either S. aria agg. × S. aucuparia or S. aria agg. × S. torminalis lineage we combined data from HPLC and chloroplast DNA analysing additional 33 related taxa as well. We concluded that the 'torminalis-type' flavonoid profile and the 'aucuparia-type' plastid indicate the participation of both S. torminalis and S. aucuparia resulting in the formation of S. dacica, S. paxiana and S. tauricola. Sorbus aria agg. as the third ancestor and as a necessary link to meet genes of S. torminalis and S. aucuparia in one genome is obvious from morphological features (densely tomentose undersides of leaves). The tetraploid cytotypes and obligate pseudogamy of S. dacica and S. paxiana were determined by flow cytometry and are published here for the first time. The most probable evolutionary scenario for Triparens species is: 1. a diploid sexual S. aucuparia as pollen acceptor hybridized with a tetraploid apomictic taxon from the S. aria agg. producing a triploid apomictic taxon with 'aucuparia-type' plastid inherited maternally; 2. during a second crossing event this subgenus Soraria hybrid as maternal progenitor hybridized with the sexual diploid S. torminalis (providing gene(s) of apigenin O-glucuronide synthesis) forming a tetraploid Triparens hybrid with 'aucuparia-type' plastid and 'torminalis-type' flavonoids.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In Turkish folk medicine, leaves of Sorbus domestica are used for the treatment of burns, cough, stomachache, bradyuria, kidney stone. The fruits of this plant are used for diarrhoea. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of S. domestica on ulcerative colitis induced by acetic acid in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The crude methanolic extract of fruits was sequentially fractionated into five subextracts; dichloromethane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous extracts. Effects of the extract, subextracts and fractions were investigated in acetic acid-induced rat colitis model. The colonic interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), nitrite, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as well as the caspase-3 and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities were measured to determine the activity. Histopathological analyzes were also performed on the colon tissue of rats. RESULTS: The methanolic extract and diethylether subextract have led to a noteworthy decrease in MPO, caspase-3, IL-6, TNF-α, MDA, and nitrite levels in the colon tissue and blood. In addition, histopathological analysis results were supported by biochemical parameters. After confirmation of the activity against ulcerative colitis, the diethyl ether subextract was subjected to more chromatographic separation for the isolation of compounds 1, 2 and 3. The structures of these three compounds were elucidated as vanillic acid 4-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (1), protocateuic acid anhydrite (2) and trivanilloyl-(1,3,4-trihydroxybenzol) ester (3). CONCLUSION: In this study, the potential of S. domestica in the treatment of colitis was investigated. Fruits of this plant were found to have important anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Through isolation techniques, vanillic acid 4-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, protocateuic acid anhydrite and trivanilloyl-(1,3,4-trihydroxybenzol) ester were determined as the main active components of the fruits. Consequently, S domestica might be a promising candidate for upcoming use the prevention and treatment of various disorders, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, irritable bowel syndrome and Clostridium difficile infection.
