RESUMO

Organic fertilizers have become a vector for the transport of microplastics (MPs), which pose human health concerns through the food chain. This study aimed to quantify and characterize MPs in eight different compost samples of various raw materials and their subsequent translocation to lettuce (Lacuta sativa) grown on contaminated composts. The results revealed that the MP abundance ranged from 3810 - 16530 MPs/kg. Municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) had highest abundance (16082 ± 632 MPs/kg), followed by leaf compost (LC) and organic compost (OC) (6299 ± 1011 and 3680 ± 419 MPs/kg, respectively). MPs of <100 µm in size were most dominant in MSWC and LC. Fragments and fibers were the prevalent shape types, with white/transparent colored MPs being more abundant. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the dominant polymers. MPs accumulation in the lettuce leaves was greatest in the lettuce plants grown on MSWC, followed by those grown on LC and OC, indicating that MSWC grown lettuce is not suitable for human consumption. The decrease in the growth (leaf length, number of leaves, leaf fresh and weights) and physiological (membrane stability index, relative water contents) parameters of lettuce was in line with the trend of MP accumulations. Hence, it is highly important to regulate the plastic contents in compost because it is a threat to ecosystems and human health.

Metastasis is the most devastating attribute of breast cancer (BC) that leads to high mortality. It is a complex process of tumor cell migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. In this study, we evaluated the effect of ERA on BC metastasis and BC progression in vivo. The transwell invasion/migration and wound healing assays showed that ERA treatment significantly reduced the invasion and migration of BC cell lines. The expression of mesenchymal (E-cadherin and N-cadherin), matrix metalloproteinases (MMP2, MMP9), and stemness markers (Oct3) were down-regulated by ERA. Furthermore, ERA down-regulated angiogenic chemokines (CXCL1/2/3, CXCL5, and CXCL12) expression in the highly metastatic MDA-MB-231 cell line. The clonogenic survival of BC cells was also reduced by ERA treatment. Strikingly, ERA prevented DMBA-induced tumor growth in Swiss albino mice as depicted by a high animal survival rate (84%) in the ERA group and histopathological analysis. Conclusively, this study revealed that ERA possesses anti-metastatic potential and also reduces the growth of BC in vivo. Moreover, the GC-MS data revealed the presence of biologically active compounds (Lupeol, Phytol, phytosterol) and some rare (9, 19-Cyclolanost) phyto metabolites in ERA extract. However, further studies are suggestive to identify and isolate the therapeutic agents from ERA to combat BC and metastasis.

This study looked at using modified camelina oil to develop sustainable coatings that could replace those derived from petroleum-based materials for use in packaging and other industrial sectors. Solvent-free synthesis of maleic anhydride grafted camelina oil (MCO) was carried out at two different temperatures (200 and 230 °C) to obtain sustainable hydrophobic coating materials for paper substrates. Maleic anhydride grafting of camelina oil was confirmed with attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopic techniques, and up to 16% grafting of maleic anhydride was achieved, as determined by the titration method. MCO, obtained at different reaction temperatures, was coated onto cellulosic paper and evaluated for its hydrophobicity, mechanical, oxygen, and water vapor barrier properties. Scanning electron microscopy indicated the homogeneous dispersion of coating material onto the paper substrate. MCO-coated papers (MCO-200C paper and MCO-230C paper) provided a water contact angle of above 90° which indicates that the modified oil was working as a hydrophobic coating. Water vapor permeability (WVP) testing of coated papers revealed a reduction in WVP of up to 94% in comparison to the uncoated paper. Moreover, an improved oxygen barrier property was also observed for paper coated with both types of MCO. Analysis of the mechanical properties showed a greater than 70% retention of tensile strength and up to a five-fold increase in elongation at break of coated versus uncoated papers. Overall, the results show that camelina oil, a renewable resource, can be modified to produce environmentally friendly hydrophobic coating materials with improved mechanical and water vapor barrier properties that can serve as a potential coating material in the packaging industry. The results of this research could find applications in the huge paper packaging industries, specially in food packaging.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of different types of acute leukaemia and their subtypes along with associated aberrant CD markers. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of the Study: Department of Immunology Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, National University of Medical Sciences, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from November 2021 to October 2023. METHODOLOGY: All samples received for flow cytometric immunophenotyping with suspicion of acute leukaemia were included in the study. Cells were stained with fluorochrome labelled monoclonal antibodies against lineage-specific cluster of differentiation (CD) markers through a lyse-wash procedure. Acquisition and analysis were done using multi-parameter BD FACS Canto II Flow cytometer and BD FACS Diva software, respectively. Data were entered and analysed using SPSS v 23.0. RESULTS: Over a period of 2 years, a total of 1,115 suspected patients were tested for acute leukaemia. Among them, 728 (65.3%) were males and 387 (34.7%) were females, with mean age 28 ± 21 years, ranging from 1 week to 87 years. Among a total of 875/1115 (78.5%) diagnosed cases of acute leukaemia, AML was the most common leukaemia present in 408/875 (46.6%) patients followed by B-ALL and T-ALL in 384/875 (43.8%) and 70/87 (8%) patients, respectively (p = 0.5712). Aberrant CD markers were detected in 109/875 (12.5%) leukaemias (p = 0.0628). The most common aberrant CD markers in B-ALL were CD13 and CD33 present in 30/384 (7.8%) cases separately. Among AML and T-ALL most common aberrant CD markers were CD7 and CD33 present in 25/408 (6.13%) and 7/70 (10%) cases, respectively. CONCLUSION: Special consideration should be given to the presence of aberrant CD markers when assigning lineages to acute leukaemias. They may be important diagnostic, prognostic, and management tools for institution of immunotherapy. KEY WORDS: Aberrant CD markers, Acute leukaemia, CD Markers, Flow cytometry, Immunophenotyping.

RESUMO

Soybean (Glycine max ) is an important oilseed, protein and biodiesel crop. It faces significant threats from bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens, which cause economic losses and jeopardises global food security. In this article, we explore the relationship between soybeans and these pathogens, focusing on the molecular responses that are crucial for soybeans defence mechanisms. Molecular responses involve small RNAs and specific genes, including resistance (R) genes that are pivotal in triggering immune responses. Functional genomics, which makes use of cutting-edge technologies, such as CRISPR Cas9 gene editing, allows us to identify genes that provide insights into the defence mechanisms of soybeans with the focus on using genomics to understand the mechanisms involved in host pathogen interactions and ultimately improve the resilience of soybeans. Genes like GmKR3 and GmVQ58 have demonstrated resistance against soybean mosaic virus and common cutworm, respectively. Genetic studies have identified quantitative trait loci (QTLs) including those linked with soybean cyst nematode, root-knot nematode and Phytophthora root and stem rot resistance. Additionally, resistance against Asian soybean rust and soybean cyst nematode involves specific genes and their variations in terms of different copy numbers. To address the challenges posed by evolving pathogens and meet the demands of a growing population, accelerated soybean breeding efforts leveraging functional genomics are imperative. Targeted breeding strategies based on a deeper understanding of soybean gene function and regulation will enhance disease resistance, ensuring sustainable agriculture and global food security. Collaborative research and continued technological advancements are crucial for securing a resilient and productive agricultural future.

Introduction: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea results from breakdown in the integrity of structures separating the subarachnoid space and nasal cavity, namely subarachnoid space and dura mater, the bony skull base and periostea alongside the upper aerodigestive tract mucosa. Endoscopic repair is considered the treatment of choice for CSF rhinorrhea. Our aim of study was to analyze the etiopathogenesis and outcomes of treatment. Material and Methods: A retrospective study review of patients treated with endoscopic repair of CSF rhinorrhea at tertiary care hospital in ENT Department Benazir Bhutto hospital Rawalpindi from august 2013 to September 2017 identified 25 patients. Majority of them were male. The defects were closed in three layers using fat, fascia lata and nasal mucosa along with fibrin sealant in majority of patients. Pre operatively subarachnoid drain was placed in all patients. Patients were followed up to 3 months. Results: Forty-four patients underwent endoscopic repair of CSF rhinorrhea. The age group ranged from 16 to 55 years. Of the total of 44 patients 26 (59%) were males and 18(41%) females. The mean age of the patients in our study was 32.8 ± 9.7. Post trauma CSF leak was seen up to 52.3% of the patients. The most common site of leakage was identified Cribriform plate area. Our success rate of endoscopic repair was 88.6%. The most commonly observed complication was meningitis that was observed in 2 (4.5%) of the patients that too were managed conservatively. Conclusion: Accurate localization of site of leakage appears to be essential for successful endoscopic repair of CSF rhinorrhea. In our study cribriform plate area was commonly observed area of CSF leak. In our study, the success rate was 88.6% and low complication rate 4.5%.

Introduction and aim: Pakistan has a mixed-health system where up to 60% of health expenditures are out of pocket. Almost 80% of primary healthcare (PHC) facilities are in the private sector, which is deeply embedded within the country's health system and may account for the unaffordability of healthcare. Since 2016, the existing national health insurance program or Sehat Sahulat Program (SSP), has provided invaluable coverage and financial protection to the millions of low-income families living in Pakistan by providing inpatient services at secondary and tertiary levels. However, a key gap is the non-inclusion of outpatient services at the PHC in the insurance scheme. This study aims to engage a private provider network of general practitioners in select union councils of Islamabad Capital Authority (ICT) of Pakistan to improve access, uptake, and satisfaction and reduce out-of-pocket expenditure on quality outpatient services at the PHC level, including family planning and reproductive health services. Methods and analysis: A 24-month research study is proposed with a 12-month intervention period using a mixed method, two-arm, prospective, quasi-experimental controlled before and after design with a sample of 863 beneficiary families from each study arm, i.e., intervention and control groups (N = 1726) will be selected through randomization at the selected beneficiary family/household level from four peri-urban Union Councils of ICT where no public sector PHC-level facility exists. All ethical considerations will be assured, along with quality assurance strategies. Quantitative pre/post surveys and third-party monitoring are proposed to measure the intervention outcomes. Qualitative inquiry with beneficiaries, general practitioners and policymakers will assess their knowledge and practices. Conclusion and knowledge contribution: PHC should be the first point of contact for accessing health services and appears to serve as a programmatic engine for universal health coverage (UHC). The research aims to study a service delivery model which harnesses the private sector to deliver an essential package of health services as outpatient services under SSP, ultimately facilitating UHC. Findings will provide a blueprint referral system to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and improve timely access to healthcare. A robust PHC system can improve population health, lower healthcare expenditure, strengthen the healthcare system, and ultimately make UHC a reality.

Atypical mycobacterial infections can have diverse clinical presentations, frequently resulting in diagnostic challenges. This study examines an uncommon atypical mycobacterial disease in an older patient, initially misidentified as psoriasis, emphasizing the difficulties in diagnosing and managing the condition. A 70-year-old male patient arrived at the dermatology department at National Hospital and Medical Centre, Lahore, with a persistent, dry, red rash mainly affecting his arms and legs. The patient had a medical background of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Initial clinical diagnosis suggested psoriasis based on the appearance and patient's age. The patient was started on conventional psoriatic therapies. However, there was only a slight improvement, which led to the need for additional inquiry. Skin biopsies were conducted, uncovering the presence of granulomatous inflammation. Following cultures and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, the presence of atypical mycobacteria was established. Subsequent laboratory tests eliminated the possibility of tuberculosis (TB) and other prevalent diseases. The conclusive diagnosis was an unusual mycobacterial infection, which posed a challenge due to its clinical similarity to psoriasis. The patient was treated with antibiotics appropriate to the mycobacterial species discovered. The duration of the treatment spanned six months, resulting in a notable amelioration of the skin lesions. The patient is being closely observed for any potential reoccurrence. This case highlights the significance of including atypical mycobacterial infection as a possible diagnosis for persistent dermatological problems, particularly in persons with impaired immune systems. It emphasizes the need for biopsy and culture in unusual situations of suspected psoriasis. This instance also demonstrates the intricacies associated with managing older patients with multiple concurrent medical issues. Unusual mycobacterial infections can imitate conventional skin disorders such as psoriasis, presenting considerable difficulties in diagnosis. Having a strong suspicion and doing relevant laboratory tests are essential for achieving an accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment.

Ab initio calculations were performed to determine the sensing behavior of g-C3N4 and Li metal-doped g-C3N4 (Li/g-C3N4) quantum dots toward toxic compounds acetamide (AA), benzamide (BA), and their thio-analogues, namely, thioacetamide (TAA) and thiobenzamide (TAA). For optimization and interaction energies, the ωB97XD/6-31G(d,p) level of theory was used. Interaction energies (Eint) illustrate the high thermodynamic stabilities of the designed complexes due to the presence of the noncovalent interactions. The presence of electrostatic forces in some complexes is also observed. The observed trend of Eint in g-C3N4 complexes was BA > TAA > AA > TBA, while in Li/g-C3N4, the trend was BA > AA > TBA > TAA. The electronic properties were studied by frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and natural bond orbital analyses. According to FMO, lithium metal doping greatly enhanced the conductivity of the complexes by generating new HOMOs near the Fermi level. A significant amount of charge transfer was also observed in complexes, reflecting the increase in charge conductivity. NCI and QTAIM analyses evidenced the presence of significant noncovalent dispersion and electrostatic forces in Li/g-C3N4 and respective complexes. Charge decomposition analysis gave an idea of the transfer of charge density between quantum dots and analytes. Finally, TD-DFT explained the optical behavior of the reported complexes. The findings of this study suggested that both bare g-C3N4 and Li/g-C3N4 can effectively be used as atmospheric sensors having excellent adsorbing properties toward toxic analytes.

Helicobacter pylori infects 50% of the world population and in 80% of cases, the infection progresses to the point where an ulcer develops leading to gastric cancer (GC). This study aimed to prevent GC by predicting Hub genes that are inducing GC. Furthermore, the study objective was to screen inhibitory molecules that block the function of predicted genes through several biophysical approaches. These proteins, such as Mucin 4 (MUC4) and Baculoviral IAP repeat containing 3 (BIRC3), had LogFC values of 2.28 and 3.39, respectively, and were found to be substantially expressed in those who had H. pylori infection. The MUC4 and BIRC3 inhibit apoptosis of infected cells and promote cancerous cell survival. The proteins were examined for their Physico-chemical characteristics, 3D structure and secondary structure analysis, solvent assessable surface area (SASA), active site identification, and network analysis. The MUC4 and BIRC3 expression was inhibited by docking eighty different compounds collected from the ZINC database. Fifty-seven compounds were successfully docked into the active site resulting in the lowest binding energy scores. The ZINC585267910 and ZINC585268691 compounds showed the lowest binding energy of -8.5 kcal/mol for MUC4 and -7.1 kcal/mol for BIRC3, respectively, and were considered best-docked solutions for molecular dynamics simulations. The mean root mean square deviation (RMSD) value for the ZINC585267910-MUC4 complex was 0.86 Å and the ZINC585268691-BIRC3 complex was 1.01 Å. The net MM/GBSA energy value of the ZINC585267910-MUC4 complex estimated was -46.84 kcal/mol and that of the ZINC585268691-BIRC3 complex was -44.84 kcal/mol. In a nutshell, the compounds might be investigated further as an inhibitor of the said proteins to stop the progress of GC induced by H. pylori.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

In this study, the oil-in-water nanoemulsion (NE) was prepared and loaded with vitamin D3 in food-grade (edible) canola oil and stabilized by Tween 80 and Span 80 by using a water titration technique with droplet sizes of 20 to 200 nm. A phase diagram was established for the influence of water, oil, and S-Mix concentration. The outcomes revealed that the particle size of blank canola oil nanoemulsion (NE) ranged from 60.12 to 62.27 (d.nm) and vitamin D3 NE ranged from 93.92 to 185.5 (d.nm). Droplet size and polydispersity index (PDI) of both blank and vitamin D3-loaded NE results were less than 1, and zeta potential results for blank and vitamin D3 loaded NE ranged from -9.71 to -15.32 mV and -7.29 to -13.56 mV, respectively. Furthermore, the pH and electrical conductivity of blank NE were 6.0 to 6.2 and 20 to 100 (µs/cm), respectively, whereas vitamin D3-loaded NE results were 6.0 to 6.2 and 30 to 100 (µs/cm), respectively. The viscosity results of blank NE ranged from 0.544 to 0.789 (mPa.s), while that of vitamin D3-loaded NE ranged from 0.613 to 0.793 (mPa.s). In this study, the long-term stability (3 months) of canola oil NE containing vitamin D3 at room temperature (25 C) and high temperature (40 C) was observed.

BACKGROUND: Azolium salts are the organic salts used as stable precursors for generating N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and their metal complexes. Azolium salts have also been reported to have significant biological potential. Hence, in the current study, four tetra-dentate azolium salts were derived from bis-azolium salts by a new synthetic strategy. METHODS: The tetra azolium salts have been synthesized by reacting the imidazole or methyl imidazole with dibromo xylene (meta, para)/ 1-bromo methyl imidazole or dibromo ethane resulting in the mono or bis azolium salts namely I-IV. V-VII have been obtained by reacting I with II-IV, resulting in the tetra azolium salts. Each product was analyzed by various analytical techniques, i.e., microanalysis, FT-IR, and NMR (1H & 13C). Salts V-VII were evaluated for their antiproliferative effect against human colon cancer cells (HCT-116) using MTT assay. RESULTS: Four chemical shifts for acidic protons between 8.5-9.5 δ ppm in 1H NMR and resonance of respective carbons around 136-146 δ ppm in 13C NMR indicated the successful synthesis of tetra azolium salts. Salt V showed the highest IC50 value, 24.8 µM among all synthesized compounds. CONCLUSION: Tetra-azolium salts may play a better cytotoxicity effect compared to mono-, bi-& tri-azolium salts.

This study investigated the role of genetic variant rs8177374 in MAL/TIRAP gene in mediating the cytokine levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-10, and TGF-ß in malaria patients due to Plasmodium falciparum or P. vivax infection. The study included human blood samples collected from patients with malaria (n = 228) and healthy controls (n = 226). P. falciparum and P. vivax groups were established based on the causative species of Plasmodium. Malaria samples were divided into mild and severe malaria groups based on the symptoms that appeared in the patients, according to the WHO criteria. In a previous study, we genotyped rs8177374 via allele specific PCR strategy. In this study, cytokine levels were estimated in the blood plasma of rs8177374 genotype samples via Sandwich Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay kits. Increased IFN-γ and TNF-α levels in presence of CC genotype indicates the role of CC genotype in both severe and mild malaria groups. Enhanced IL-10 levels in the CT genotype and mild malaria groups suggest a role of CT genotype and IL-10 in the mild clinical outcomes of malaria. The rs8177374 polymorphism in MAL/TIRAP plays an important role in malaria pathogenesis.

This review aims to measure the different aspects of summer savory including biological activity, medicinal properties, nutritional value, food application, prospective health benefits, and its use as an additive in broiler feed. Furthermore, toxicity related to this is also overviewed. Summer savory leaves are abundant in total phenolic compounds (rosmarinic acid and flavonoids) that have a powerful antioxidant impact. Rosmarinic (α-O-caffeoyl-3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl lactic) acid has been identified in summer savory as a main component. According to phytochemical investigations, tannins, volatile oils, sterols, acids, gums, pyrocatechol, phenolic compounds, mucilage, and pyrocatechol are the primary compounds of Satureja species. Summer savory extract shows considerable biological potential in antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antibacterial assays. Regarding antioxidant activity, summer savory extract displays an inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation. Summer savory also has Fe (III) reductive and free radical scavenging properties and contains minerals and vitamins. Summer savory has important biological properties, including antimicrobial activity and antioxidant activity, and protective effects against Jurkat T Cells, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, infection, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cholesterol. This preliminary investigation aimed to detect concentrations of chlorinated pesticides and PCBs in 40 sediment samples from three desert oases located in Kharga, Dakhla and Farafra in western Egypt. The residues of 18 PCBs and 16 chlorinated pesticides were measured by GC-MS/MS (SRM) method. The results showed that PCBs and pesticides were present in all studied samples. The concentrations of individual PCBs ranged from undetected to 3.99 ng/g dw in all these sediment samples. The total residue of pesticides (ng/g, dry weight) in sediment samples also varied from 5.18 to 25.92, 5.41 to 29.49, and 5.93 to 24.19 ng/g dw for the Kharga, Dakhla and Farafra Oases, respectively. The concentrations of PCBs and chlorinated pesticides detected in these oasis sediments were lower than that reported for other worldwide locations. According to the recorded concentrations in this baseline study of PCBs and total DDTs, the results revealed the minimal risks to organisms and people in the studied area according to the Effects Range-Low (ERL) and Effects Range-Median (ERM) guideline values.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids may be derived from a variety of sources and could be incorporated into a balanced diet. They protect against a wide range of illnesses, including cancer osteoarthritis and autoimmune problems. The PUFAs, ω-6, and ω-3 fatty acids, which are found in both the marine and terrestrial environments, are given special attention. The primary goal is to evaluate the significant research papers in relation to the human health risks and benefits of ω-6 and ω-3 fatty acid dietary resources. This review article highlights the types of fatty acids, factors affecting the stability of polyunsaturated fatty acids, methods used for the mitigation of oxidative stability, health benefits of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and future perspectives in detail.

The mandate of the current investigation was to elucidate the therapeutic and antioxidant perspective of black tea. Purposely, black tea compositional analysis followed by polyphenol extraction and antioxidant characterization was done. Moreover, the theaflavin from black tea extract was also isolated through the solvent partition method. Lastly, the neuroprotective effect of isolated theaflavin was assessed through a bio-efficacy trial. The outcomes delineated that black tea showed promising nutritional composition with special reference to protein and fiber. Among the extraction solvent, ethanol performed better as compared to methanol and water likewise, higher extraction was noticed at 60 min followed by 90 and 30 min. All the extracts indicated antioxidant activity reflected through significant DPPH, TPC, FRAP, and beta carotene as-69.13 ± 3.00, 1148.92 ± 14.01, 752.44 ± 10.30, and 65.74 ± 3.28, respectively. However, isolated theaflavin exhibited higher antioxidant capacity as-737.74 ± 12.55, 82.60 ± 2.33, and 853.77 ± 9.55, for TPC, DPPH, and FRAP, respectively, as compared to extracts. In 15 days' efficacy was physically induced with sciatic nerve injury h sciatic nerve injury physically and treated with isolated theaflavin. A total of 12 healthy albino mice were randomly assigned to either the control (n = 6) or theaflavin (5.0 mg/kg (n = 6)) groups. In these groups, behavioral tests were used to assess and compare enhanced functional recovery as well as skeletal muscle mass measurement. Serum samples included oxidative stress markers. In theaflavin leaves, behavioral tests revealed a statistically significant (p < .001) improvement in sensorimotor function restoration, muscle mass restoration, a substantial decrease in TOS, a significant increase in TAC, and enhanced antioxidative enzyme activity. Considering the above-mentioned therapeutic perspectives of theaflavin, the current research was planned to optimize the isolation of theaflavin from black tea and probed for their neuroprotective effect in mice models.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique for analyzing the central and peripheral nervous system. TMS could be a powerful therapeutic technique for neurological disorders. TMS has also shown potential in treating various neurophysiological complications, such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, without pain and analgesics. Despite advancements in diagnosis and treatment, there has been an increase in the prevalence of brain cancer globally. For surgical planning, mapping brain tumors has proven challenging, particularly those localized in expressive regions. Preoperative brain tumor mapping may lower the possibility of postoperative morbidity in surrounding areas. A navigated TMS (nTMS) uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enable precise mapping during navigated brain stimulation. The resulting magnetic impulses can be precisely applied to the target spot in the cortical region by employing nTMS. This review focuses on nTMS for preoperative planning for brain cancer. This study reviews several studies on TMS and its subtypes in treating cancer and surgical planning. nTMS gives wider and improved dimensions of preoperative planning of the motor-eloquent areas in brain tumor patients. nTMS also predicts postoperative neurological deficits, which might be helpful in counseling patients. nTMS have the potential for finding possible abnormalities in the motor cortex areas.

Ovarian cancer is a highly prevalent malignancy among women and affects a significant population worldwide. Different forms of hormonal treatments or chemotherapies are used to treat ovarian cancer, but the possible side effects, including menopausal symptoms, can be severe, forcing some patients to prematurely stop the treatment. The emerging genome editing technology, known as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-caspase 9 (Cas9), has the potential to treat ovarian cancer via gene editing strategies. Studies have reported CRISPR knockouts of several oncogenes that are involved in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer, such as BMI1, CXCR2, MTF1, miR-21, and BIRC5, and demonstrate the potential of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technique to effectively treat ovarian cancer. However, there are limitations that restrict the biomedical applications of CRISPR-Cas9 and limit the implementation of Gene therapy for ovarian cancer. These include offtarget DNA cleavage and the effects of CRISPR-Cas9 in non-target, normal cells. This article aims to review the current state of ovarian cancer research, highlight the significance of CRISPR-Cas9 in ovarian cancer treatment, and establish the groundwork for potential clinical research.

Data are limited regarding the impact of ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) or non-ICM (NICM) on the trajectory of in-hospital decongestion among patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). Therefore, we aimed to assess the course of decongestion among patients admitted for ADHF by history of ICM and NICM. Patients included in the DOSE (Diuretic strategies in patients with acute decompensated heart failure), ROSE (ROSE acute heart failure randomized trial), and Ultrafiltration in decompensated heart failure with cardiorenal syndrome (CARRESS-HF) trials of patients with ADHF were categorized into ICM and NICM based on history. Among 762 patients included in our meta-analysis, 433 (56.8%) had a history of ICM. Patients with ICM were older (70.8 vs 63.9 years; p ≤0.001) and had higher rates of co-morbidities. After covariate adjustment, there was no significant differences between NICM and ICM regarding net fluid loss (4,952 vs 4,384 ml, p = 0.81) or mean change in serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (-2,162 vs -1,809 pg/ml, p = 0.092). Mean change in weight showed modest improvement in favor of patients with NICM, but this did not meet statistical significance (-8.24 vs -7.70 pounds, p = 0.068). After adjustment, there was no significant difference in the risk of 60-day composite all-cause mortality or hospitalization for HF among those with ICM versus NICM. Among patients with left ventricular ejection fraction <40%, NICM was associated with higher scoring on global sense of well-being (global visual analog scale; +25.5 vs +19.1, p = 0.023) and improvement in serum creatinine (-0.031 mg/100 ml vs +0.042 mg/100 ml, p = 0.009) at 72 hours. Among patients with left ventricular ejection fraction >40%, NICM was associated with decreased scoring on global visual analog scale at 72 hours (+15.7 vs +21.2, p = 0.049). In conclusion, more than half of the patients admitted for ADHF had ICM. History of ICM was not independently associated with a difference in course of decongestion, self-assessment of well-being and dyspnea, or short-term clinical outcomes.
