RESUMO

Rapid and sensitive monitoring of pH and histamine is crucial for bridging biological and food systems and identifying corresponding abnormal situations. Herein, N-doped carbon dots (CDs) are fabricated by a hydrothermal method employing dipicolinic acid and o-phenylenediamine as precursors. The CDs exhibit colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode responses to track pH and histamine variations in living cells and food freshness, respectively. The aggregation-induced emission enhancement and intramolecular charge transfer result in a decrease in absorbance and an increase in fluorescence, which become readily apparent as the pH changes from acidic to neutral. This property enables precise differentiation between normal and cancerous cells. Furthermore, given the intrinsic basicity of histamine, pH-responsive CDs are advantageous for additional colorimetric and fluorescent monitoring of histamine in food freshness, achieving linearities of 25-1000 µM and 30-1000 µM, respectively, which are broader than those of alternative nanoprobes. Interestingly, the smartphone-integrated sensing platform can portably and visually evaluate pH and histamine changes due to sensitive color changes. Therefore, the sensor not only establishes a dynamic connection between pH and histamine for the purposes of biological and food monitoring, but also presents a novel approach for developing a multifunctional biosensor that can accomplish environmental monitoring and biosensing simultaneously.

Syzygium heyneanum is a valuable source of flavonoids and phenols, known for their antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. This research aimed to explore the potential of Syzygium heyneanum ethanol extract (SHE) in countering Parkinson's disease. The presence of phenols and flavonoids results in SHE displaying an IC50 value of 42.13 when assessed in the DPPH scavenging assay. Rats' vital organs (lungs, heart, spleen, liver, and kidney) histopathology reveals little or almost no harmful effect. The study hypothesized that SHE possesses antioxidants that could mitigate Parkinson's symptoms by influencing α-synuclein, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), TNF-α, and IL-1ß. Both in silico and in vivo investigations were conducted. The Parkinson's rat model was established using paraquat (1 mg/kg, i.p.), with rats divided into control, disease control, standard, and SHE-treated groups (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg) for 21 days. According to the ELISA statistics, the SHE treated group had lowers levels of IL-6 and TNF-α than the disease control group, which is a sign of neuroprotection. Behavioral and biochemical assessments were performed, alongside mRNA expression analyses using RT-PCR to assess SHE's impact on α-synuclein, AChE, TNF-α, and interleukins in brain homogenates. Behavioral observations demonstrated dose-dependent improvements in rats treated with SHE (600 > 300 > 150 mg/kg). Antioxidant enzyme levels (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione) were significantly restored, particularly at a high dose, with notable reduction in malondialdehyde. The high dose of SHE notably lowered acetylcholinesterase levels. qRT-PCR results indicated reduced mRNA expression of IL-1ß, α-synuclein, TNF-α, and AChE in SHE-treated groups compared to disease controls, suggesting neuroprotection. In conclusion, this study highlights Syzygium heyneanum potential to alleviate Parkinson's disease symptoms through its antioxidant and modulatory effects on relevant biomarkers.

The structural, morphological, mechanical, and electronic properties of nickel-substituted manganese oxide (NixMn1-xO, where x = 0.0, 0.2, and 0.4) were studied using experimental techniques. The compounds were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The face-centered cubic structures of the examined compounds were confirmed by XRD. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the particles were well-shaped, while elemental mapping with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed that the examined compounds had the appropriate proportions of Ni, Mn, and O. The FT-IR spectroscopy results indicated the respective functional groups. Raman spectroscopy results disclosed the vibration modes of the respective materials. The Tauc plot reveals the semiconducting nature of the compounds. The UV-Vis bandgap study revealed the semiconductor natures of compounds. This demonstrates that these nanoparticles can be used in atom lasers, photovoltaics, and other electronic applications.

Magnetic spinel ferrite nanoparticles (MSF-NPs) are potential candidates for biomedical applications, especially in cancer diagnosis and therapy due to their excellent physiochemical and magnetic properties. In the current study, MSF-NPs were fabricated by sol-gel auto combustion method. The crystal structure and surface morphology were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The magnetic properties were studied by VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer). As increasing Gd3+ concentration, the saturation magnetization values decreased from (17.8-2.3) emu/g, while the coercivity decreased from (499-133) Oe at room temperature. Finally, the fabricated MSF-NPs were tested against anticancer activity by MTT assay. The IC50 = 21.27 µg/mL value was observed, showing the strong antiproliferative activity of these nanoparticles. These results suggested that the obtained MSF-NPs would be useful for remote-controlled hyperthermia therapy for cancer treatment and MRI application due to their excellent magnetic properties. These distinct properties make MSF-NPs most suitable for cancer treatment and bright Contrast Agents (T1-MRI).

Methotrexate (MTX)-induced intestinal mucositis (IM) is a common side effect in cancer treatment that impairs the immune system and gut microbes, resulting in loss of mucosal integrity and gut barrier dysfunction. The quality of life and outcomes of treatment are compromised by IM. The present study was designed to investigate the mucoprotective potential of the benzimidazole derivative N-{4-[2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole-1-sulfonyl] phenyl} acetamide (B8) on MTX-induced IM in mice. IM was induced by a single dose of MTX in mice and assessed by physical manifestations as well as biochemical, oxidative, histological, and inflammatory parameters. B8 (1, 3, 9 mg/kg) significantly reduced diarrhea score, mitigated weight loss, increased feed intake and, survival rate in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, B8 exhibited a mucoprotective effect evident through the mitigation of villus atrophy, crypt hypoplasia, diminished crypt mitotic figures, mucin depletion, and oxidative stress markers (GSH, SOD, MDA, and catalase concentration). Gene expression analysis revealed that B8 downregulated the mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1ß, and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and concurrently upregulated IL-10 expression in contrast to the MTX group. Further, B8 significantly improved the luminal microflora profile by augmenting the growth of Lactobacillus spp. and reducing the number of pathogenic bacteria (E. coli). Additionally, the enzyme-linked immunoassay showed that B8 decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Our findings suggest that B8 had mucoprotective effects against MTX-induced IM and could be used as an adjunct in chemotherapy to deter this side effect.

Plant essential oils (EOs) possess significant bioactivities (antibacterial and antioxidant) and can be substituted for potentially harmful synthetic preservatives in the food industry. However, limited water solubility, bioavailability, volatility, and stability limit their use. Therefore, the goal of this research was nanosizing lavender essential oil (LEO), basil essential oil (BEO), and clove essential oil (CEO) in a microemulsion (ME) to improve their physicochemical attributes and bioefficacy. Tween 80 and Transcutol P were utilized for construction of pseudoternary phase diagrams. It was observed that the concentration of EOs had a great impact on the physicochemical and biological properties of MEs. A spherical droplet of MEs with a diameter of less than 20 nm with a narrower size distribution (polydispersity index (PDI) = 0.10-0.27) and a ζ potential of -0.27 to -9.03 was observed. ME formulations were also evaluated for viscosity, conductivity, and the refractive index. Moreover, the impact of delivery systems on the antibacterial property of EOs was assessed by determining the zone of inhibition and minimum inhibitory concentration against two distinct pathogen classes (S. aureus and E. coli). Crystal violet assay was used to measure the growth and development of biofilms. According to bioefficacy assays, ME demonstrated more efficient antibacterial activity against microorganisms at concentrations lower than pure EOs. CEO ME had superior activity againstS. aureus and E. coli. Similarly, dose-dependent antioxidant capacity was noted for MEs. Consequently, nanosized EO formulations with improved physicochemical properties and enhanced bioactivities can be employed in the food processing sector as a preservation agent.

Laparoscopic education and surgery assessments increase the success rates and lower the risks during actual surgeries. Hospital residents need a secure setting, and trainees require a safe and controlled environment with cost-effective resources where they may hone their laparoscopic abilities. Thus, we have modeled and developed a surgical simulator to provide the initial training in Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy (LPN-a procedure to treat kidney cancer or renal masses). To achieve this, we created a virtual simulator using an open-source game engine that can be used with a commercially available, reasonably priced virtual reality (VR) device providing visual and haptic feedback. In this study, the proposed simulator's design is presented, costs are contrasted, and the simulator's performance is assessed using face and content validity measures. CPU- and GPU-based computers can run the novel simulation with a soft body deformation based on simplex meshes. With a reasonable trade-off between price and performance, the HTC Vive's controlled soft body effect, physics-based deformation, and haptic rendering offer the advantages of an excellent surgical simulator. The trials show that the medical volunteers who performed the initial LPN procedures for newbie surgeons received positive feedback.

Histopathological images are very effective for investigating the status of various biological structures and diagnosing diseases like cancer. In addition, digital histopathology increases diagnosis precision and provides better image quality and more detail for the pathologist with multiple viewing options and team annotations. As a result of the benefits above, faster treatment is available, increasing therapy success rates and patient recovery and survival chances. However, the present manual examination of these images is tedious and time-consuming for pathologists. Therefore, reliable automated techniques are needed to effectively classify normal and malignant cancer images. This paper applied a deep learning approach, namely, EfficientNet and its variants from B0 to B7. We used different image resolutions for each model, from 224 × 224 pixels to 600 × 600 pixels. We also applied transfer learning and parameter tuning techniques to improve the results and overcome the overfitting problem. We collected the dataset from the Lung and Colon Cancer Histopathological Image LC25000 image dataset. The dataset acquisition consists of 25,000 histopathology images of five classes (lung adenocarcinoma, lung squamous cell carcinoma, benign lung tissue, colon adenocarcinoma, and colon benign tissue). Then, we performed preprocessing on the dataset to remove the noisy images and bring them into a standard format. The model's performance was evaluated in terms of classification accuracy and loss. We have achieved good accuracy results for all variants; however, the results of EfficientNetB2 stand excellent, with an accuracy of 97% for 260 × 260 pixels resolution images.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are novel medications used to treat a wide range of solid organ tumors and work by stimulating the cellular immune response. With their increasing use, more and more multiorgan side effects are reported in the literature. Prompt recognition of these findings is vital for the safe clinical use of these agents. Most side effects are immune-mediated injury, and the treatment involves stopping the ICI drug and systemic steroids. We report a case of a 72-year-old female treated with pembrolizumab monotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer. She presented for dyspnea and generalized weakness after the second session of pembrolizumab. She was found to have a triad of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, hypophysitis, and pneumonitis. The patient was discharged home on steroids and heart failure treatment with the discontinuation of further sessions of pembrolizumab.

Background: Optimal treatment regimen for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. Therefore, the authors sought to compare the outcomes of ablation therapy versus pharmacological regimens in patients with AF. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central databases were searched for randomized controlled trials and observational studies comparing clinical outcomes between of ablation and pharmacological therapy in patients with AF. Stroke, all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, cardiovascular hospitalization, heart failure (HF), and bleeding were among outcomes of interest. Mantel-Haenszel weighted random-effects model was used to calculate relative risks (RRs) with 95 % CIs. Results: The analysis included ~200 000 patients from 4 randomized controlled trials and 7 observational studies. Meta-analysis showed statistically significant reduction in stroke among patients on ablation therapy [hazard ratio (HR) 0.51, 95% CI (0.43, 0.60), P<0.00001, I2=10%], all-cause mortality [HR 0.64, 95% CI (0.45, 0.93), P=0.02, I2=58%], cardiovascular mortality [HR 0.35, 95% CI (0.25, 0.50), P<0.0001, I2=0%], and HF [HR 0.40, 95% CI (0.31, 0.53), P<0.00001, I2=30%]. However, no significant difference was revealed in the risk of cardiovascular hospitalization [HR 1.04, 95% CI (0.88, 1.23), P=0.66, I2=89%] and bleeding [HR 1.11, 95% CI (0.97, 1.27), P=0.13, I2=0%]. Conclusion: Ablation significantly reduces the risk of stroke, cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality, and HF in AF patients, compared with medical therapy alone, supporting its use in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Though laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become a gold standard management technique for gallbladder diseases, an open approach can also be used for patients having complicated gallbladder disease. Post-cholecystectomy complications are well-documented in existing English scientific literature but are not well understood according to the grade of intervention required to treat those complications. OBJECTIVE: To compare the postoperative complications of laparoscopic versus open cholecystectomy according to the modified Clavien-Dindo classification (MCDC) system. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  A retrospective study was conducted at the Department of General Surgery, Unit - III, Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, comprising the data of patients operated between July 01, 2021, and December 31, 2021, after departmental approval # SU-III/73/LGH, dated April 1, 2022. Patients with the definitive diagnosis of acute cholecystitis, chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, and cholecysto-duodenal fistula were included, while cases of choledocholithiasis and, gall bladder carcinoma were excluded from this study. Eighty patients met the inclusion criteria, with 40 patients in each group of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Information for the data set of age, gender, history of surgical procedure, immediate and late outcome, length of surgery, and MCDC grade were collected. Low-grade complications were Grade I and Grade II, while Grades III to V were high-grade. RESULTS: The mean age of included patients was 42.52 ± 8.76 and 40.025 ± 8.12 years, in the open and laparoscopic group, with 80% and 90% female preponderance, respectively. Grade I and Grade II complications occurred in both groups of patients, with Grade III only in patients who underwent open cholecystectomy. None of the patients from each group developed Grade IV or Grade V complications. Among 40 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, 35% of the patients developed low-grade complications, whereas 40% of the patients developed low-grade complications after open cholecystectomy, with respiratory complications being the most common. High-grade complications after open cholecystectomy were found among 2.5% of patients, whereas no patients developed high-grade complications following the laparoscopic approach. CONCLUSION: Patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy are less prone to develop complications than patients undergoing open cholecystectomy, hence requiring low-grade interventions of surgical and non-surgical types. MCDC is a valuable tool for assessing surgical complications and can help improve patient outcomes by providing a standardized method for reporting and comparing complication rates.

BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of proximal defects with tight contacts has always been a challenge for dental clinicians, especially with composite material. Recent literature shows that the most frequently used matrix systems for the restoration of proximal cavities are circumferential or sectional matrix band systems. The objective of this study was to compare the contact tightness that is achieved with these two matrix band systems when using composite material. METHODS: A total of 30 patients, i.e., 60 cavities were selected in this quasi-experimental study. Patients with two cavities in the posterior teeth were selected. Both the cavities were restored with the circumferential system, i.e., Tofflemire and sectional matrix band system, i.e., Palodent plus on the same appointment. Hence both systems were used in every patient and then contact tightness assess was ed based on an evaluation criterion, i.e., Fédération Dentaire Internationale clinical criteria for evaluation of contact in direct and indirect restorations. To make a comparison between the two systems Chi square test was used and p<0.05. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients in the study was 31 years (SD, 7.59 years) with a range from 18 to 45 years. Most of the contact tightness in the Palodent matrix system was score 1 (n=33, 55%) and score 2 (n=17, 28.3%) while in Tofflemire was score 4 (n=28, 46.7%) and score 5 (n=19, 31.7%). Statistical analysis showed significance (p=.037) between Palodent matrix system contact tightness and Tofflemire. Conclusion: The sectional matrix band system was statistically superior to the circumferential matrix band system in achieving a tighter contact for class II composite restorations.

Vertically stacked artificial 2D superlattice hybrids fabricated through molecular-level hybridization in a controlled fashion play a vital role in scientific and technological fields, but developing an alternate assembly of 2D atomic layers with strong electrostatic interactions could be much more challenging. In this study, we have constructed an alternately stacked self-assembled superlattice composite through integration of CuMgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets having positive charge with negatively charged Ti3C2Tx layers using well-controlled liquid-phase co-feeding protocol and electrostatic attraction and investigated its electrochemical performance in sensing early cancer biomarkers, i.e., hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The molecular-level CuMgAl LDH/Ti3C2Tx superlattice self-assembly possesses superb conductivity and electrocatalytic properties, which are significant for obtaining a high electrochemical sensing aptitude. Electron penetration in Ti3C2Tx layers and rapid ion diffusion along 2D galleries have shortened the diffusion path and enhanced the charge transferring efficacy. The electrode modified with the CuMgAl LDH/Ti3C2Tx superlattice has demonstrated admirable electrocatalytic abilities in H2O2 detection with a wide linear concentration range and low real-time limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 nM with signal/noise ratio (S/N) = 3. Practically, an electrochemical sensing podium based on the CuMgAl LDH/Ti3C2Tx superlattice has been effectively applied in real-time in vitro tracking of H2O2 effluxes excreted from different live cancer cells and normal cells after being encouraged by stimulation. The results exhibit that molecular-level heteroassembly holds great potential in electrochemical sensors to detect promising biomarkers.

Inflammation is the core contributor in the pathogenesis of various acute and chronic illness including appendicitis, bronchitis, arthritis, cancer and neurological diseases. NSAIDs, commonly used medications for inflammatory diseases, on prolonged use cause GI bleeding, ulcers and many more issues. Plant-based therapeutic agents including essential oils in combination with low-dose synthetic drugs have been shown to produce synergistic effects and reduce complications of synthetic drugs. This study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-pyretic properties of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil alone and in combination with flurbiprofen. GC-MS analysis was performed to screen chemical composition of oil. In vitro anti-inflammatory assay (membrane stabilization assay) and in vivo inflammatory acute (carrageenan and histamine-induced paw oedema) and chronic (cotton pellet-induced granuloma and Complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis) models were performed to check anti-inflammatory properties. Acetic acid-induced algesia and yeast-induced pyrexia models were performed to check analgesic and anti-pyretic properties. qRT-PCR was performed to study the effect of treatments on the expression of inflammatory biomarkers. GC-MS analysis of E. globulus essential oil showed the presence of eucalyptol along with other active biomolecules. 500 + 10 mg/kg of oil-drug combination showed significantly (p < 0.05) better in vitro membrane stabilization effects as compared with groups treated with 500 mg/kg of E. globulus oil and 10 mg/kg of Flurbiprofen alone. 500 + 10 mg/kg of oil-drug combination showed significantly (p < 0.05) better anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects as compared to 500 mg/kg of E. globulus oil alone in all in vivo models. When comparison was done between 500 + 10 mg/kg of oil-drug combination-treated and 10 mg/kg Flurbiprofen-treated group, the former group showed significantly (p < 0.05) better anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic effects, but there were non-significant differences in the analgesic model. Animal group treated with 10 mg/kg of Flurbiprofen showed significantly (p < 0.05) better anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects than group treated with 500 mg/kg of oil alone while, there were non-significant differences in anti-pyretic effects. qRT-PCR analysis showed significant (p < 0.05) down-regulation in the expression of IL-4 and TNF-α in serum samples of animals treated with 500 + 10 mg/kg of oil-drug combination as compared to the diseased control (arthritic) group. Overall, the current research demonstrates that Eucalyptus globulus essential oil in combination with flurbiprofen showed better anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-pyretic effects than oil and flurbiprofen alone which is attributed to the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory biomarkers (IL-4 and TNF-α). Further studies are required to formulate a stable dosage form and to check the anti-inflammatory efficacy in different inflammatory disorders.

Abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland is called goiter. Structurally, it can be nodular or diffuse. Usually, it presents as an anterior cervical mass; however, less commonly, it presents as a retrosternal mass causing symptoms of compression on the surrounding structures. Most patients with goiter are asymptomatic due to the euthyroid nature of the disease. However, sometimes they can be hypo or hyperthyroid depending on the etiology of the goiter. Here, we present the case of a patient without any previously known goiter who presented to the hospital with shortness of breath and was found to have hypoxic respiratory failure as his first noticed sign of thyroid disease. Diagnostic workup revealed retrosternal goiter causing compression effect on the esophagus and trachea resulting in dysphagia and aspiration. The patient was treated with feeding tube placement, followed by surgical resection of the mediastinal mass.

Cardiac tumors are uncommon. Sometimes it is challenging to differentiate non-invasively between different kinds of cardiac tumors and thrombi, which is critical to dictate the subsequent treatment. In addition, not all high-risk cardiac tumors are amenable to surgical resection posing a therapeutic challenge. We report a case of cardiac papillary fibroelastoma in the left ventricular cavity with a 10-year follow-up, with no embolic complications.

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine metabolic disorder of women. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the potential of aqueous extract of Garcinia cambogia Desr. (AEGC) in PCOS. Methodology: The HPLC was used to determine the phytoconstituents present in Garcinia cambogia. Thirty adult female albino rats were divided into 6 groups: Normal control (NC) disease Control (PCOS; letrozole 1 mg/kg), plant extract (AEGC 100, 300, 500 mg/kg) and standard (metformin; 20 mg/kg). Disease was confirmed by vaginal smear cytology. After 10 weeks, animals were euthanized, ovaries dissected for histopathology, blood collected for hormonal and biochemical analysis. Results: HPLC analysis showed the presence of phenolic contents; chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, coumaric acid while flavonoid contents were quercetin, kaempferol, and rutin. After treatment, there was dose dependent reduction of weight, ovarian cysts, improvement of follicle growth. DPPH radical scavenging percentage was 67.89%. Hormonal analysis showed a significant improvement (P < .05) in follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estrogen, and progesterone while a reduction in testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and insulin level. Antioxidant enzymatic markers were significantly (P < .05) increased. Lipid profile and LFTs were also improved. Conclusions: The study validated the potential of Garcinia cambogia in the management of PCOS.

BACKGROUNDS: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous unit affecting most teenagers and numerous adults throughout the world. The present study was designed to assess the association of the presence or absence of GSTM1, GSTT1, and single nucleotide polymorphisms rs1695 in GSTP1 and rs1042522 in TP53 gene with acne vulgaris. METHODS: The cross-sectional case-control study was conducted at the Institute of Zoology from May 2020 to March 2021 and included acne vulgaris patients (N = 100) and controls (N = 100) enrolled in Dera Ghazi Khan district, Pakistan. Multiplex and tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reactions were applied to investigate the genotype in analyzed genes. The association of rs1695 and rs1042522 with acne vulgaris was studied either individually or in various combinations with GATM1 and T1. RESULTS: A significant association of absence of GSTT1 and mutant genotype at rs1695 (GG) and at rs1042522 (CC) in GSTP1 and TP53, respectively, was found to be associated with acne vulgaris in enrolled subjects. Subjects aged 10-25 years and smokers were more susceptible to acne vulgaris. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that genotypes of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and TP53 are involved in protection against oxidative stress and may influence disease progression in acne vulgaris.

Introduction Ovarian tumors remain one of the leading malignancies of the female genital tract, with a high mortality rate due to their insidious onset and lack of detection at an earlier stage. These tumors metastasize by direct extension into the neighboring pelvic organs; hence, the detection of peritoneal metastasis is valuable for staging and prognostic purposes. Peritoneal wash cytological analysis is an effective predictor of the involvement of the ovarian surface and peritoneal dissemination even in subclinical involvement of the peritoneum. The study aims to determine the significance of peritoneal wash cytology as a prognostic parameter and correlate it with various clinicohistological features. Methods A retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Histopathology, Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, between July 2017 and June 2022. During this period, all the cases of ovarian tumors (borderline and malignant) that underwent total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and omental and lymph node sampling were included in the study. After opening the abdominal cavity, the free fluid present was aspirated immediately, the peritoneum was lavaged with 50-100 mL of warm saline, and samples were collected and sent for cytological analysis. Four cytospin smear slides and cell block preparation were prepared. The findings of peritoneal cytology were correlated with various clinicohistological features. Results A total of 118 cases of ovarian tumors were included in the study. Serous carcinoma was the most common sub-type (50.8%), followed by endometrioid carcinoma (14.4%), and the mean age at diagnosis was found to be 49.9±14.9 years. The mean tumor size was 11.2 cm. The majority of the cases of ovarian carcinoma were of high grade (78.8%), with capsular invasion present in 61% of cases. Positive peritoneal cytology was noted in 58.5% of cases, with omental involvement in 52.5% of cases. Serous carcinoma showed the highest frequency of positive cytology (69.6%) and omental metastasis (74.2%). Apart from tumor type, positive peritoneal cytology showed a significantly positive correlation with age, tumor grade, and capsular invasion. Conclusion Based on our study findings, we conclude that peritoneal wash cytology is a sensitive indicator of the peritoneal spread of ovarian carcinoma, with a significant prognostic value. Serous carcinomas, especially high-grade with capsular invasion, were found to be predictors of peritoneal involvement of ovarian tumors. Although we found smaller tumors to be associated with peritoneal disease more compared to larger ones, this most likely is attributed to tumor histology, as larger tumors were most commonly mucinous compared to serous carcinomas.
