SUMMARY: The aim of the study was to determine the somatotype of taekwondo athletes at the Regional Training Center (CER) in Valparaíso, Chile. The first four were classified according to sex (8 athletes in total), men (18.75 ± 2.62 years) and women (18.50 ± 1.91 years), all of them active competitors in the discipline nationally and internationally. For the evaluation, the standards established by the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) and the Spanish Group of Cineanthropometry (GREC) were considered. The materials used were CESCORF® basic Innovare kit, TANITA® weight/height scale. To determine the somatotype, the Heath & Carter proposal was considered. The results showed that in men a classification of the somatotype of balanced mesomorph (2.5-4.0- 3.0), while in women it was classified as mesomorphic - endomorphic (3,3-3,6 - 2,3). It is concluded that in both sexes the mesomorphic component predominates, women present a higher level of endomorphy and a lower development of mesomorphy compared to men.

Abstract: Objective: To associate health anthropometric indexes with physical fitness of elderly women (EW) who participate in physical exercise workshops. Materials and methods: 272 Chilean women over 60 years took part in the study. The variables studied were BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-height index (WHI) and physical fitness (PF). Correlations were made through the Pearson or Spearman coefficient, and bivariate associations using Pearson's Chi-square and the Fisher's exact test, considering p<0.05. Results: 70.8% of the EW were overweight or obese; 68.8% and 96% were at cardiometabolic risk due to their WC and WHI, respectively. Their PF showed equal performance (53.5%) or higher (33.8%) according to their age and gender. Inverse correlations were found between nutritional status and cardiometabolic risk with PF tests (except for agility and dynamic balance [direct]), and direct association with back scratch test. Conclusions: Excess weight in physically active EW would not affect their physical-functional performance; however, cardiometabolic risk would be inversely associated with motor function.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm and it is frequently diagnosed in the third and fourth decade with predilection for women. PA is the most common benign lesion of minor salivary glands in children and adolescents, being the palate one of the most frequently affected site of minor salivary glands. Herein, we present a case report of a PA of the hard palate diagnosed in a 15-year-old female and a review of the Englishliterature of the reported cases of PA in children and adolescents in the hard palate.

This study was designed to estimate the dietary intake of total arsenic, inorganic arsenic, cadmium, mercury, sodium, and potassium by the general adult population (aged 18-65) of Valdivia, Chile. Calculations were based on a 24-h dietary recall survey. The highest dietary intake of t-As (73.0 µg/day), i-As (20.0 µg/day), Cd (18.0 µg/day), Hg (5.8 µg/day), Na+ (3112.8 mg/day), and K+ (2077.5 mg/day) were for 70-kg adults. Estimating carcinogenic risk (CR > 4 × 10-4) due to exposure to i-As indicated that consumers remain at low risk for cancer. The cumulative health risk was evaluated by summing the target hazard quotient of cadmium (0.26) mercury (0.27) and inorganic arsenic (0.96); this calculation allows us to express the total target hazard quotient as 1.50 where a value > 1 indicates that there is a potential health risk for the population. Total intake of Cd and Hg were therefore within the limits estimated as being safe whereas Na+ and K+ intake for the Valdivia population did not follow the recommended values established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Na+ intake exceeded the daily recommended intake while K+ intake was lower than the daily recommended intake. This indicates a health risk for the Valdivia population.

RESUMO

The net interaction between a probe tip coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein and a flat substrate coated with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer was measured directly on approach in water and electrolyte solutions using AFM. The approach force curve between the two surfaces was monotonically repulsive in water and in electrolyte solutions. At pH ~5, slightly above the isoelectric point (pI) of BSA, and at large distances, the force was dominated by electrostatic repulsion between the oxygen atoms of the incoming protein with those belonging to the ether groups of PEO. Such repulsive force and range decreased in NaCl. Under physiological conditions, pH 6, BSA is definitely charged and the electrostatic repulsion with ether groups in PEO appears at larger separation distances. Interestingly, at pH 4, below the pI of BSA, the repulsion decreased because of an attractive, although weak, electrostatic force that appeared between the ether groups in PEO and the positively charged amino groups of BSA. However, for all solution conditions, once compression of PEO begun, the net repulsion was always dominated by short-range polymeric steric repulsion and repulsive enthalpy penalties for breaking PEO-water bonds. Results suggest that PEO in mushroom conformation may also be effective in reducing biofouling.

RESUMO

Dietary intake of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) by the population of Santiago (Chile) was determined using a Total Diet Study in the market basket modality. After conducting a survey of the foods consumed in the last 24 h, the most consumed food products were included in the basket. Subsequently, they were cooked or prepared according to typical Chilean procedures and grouped into 17 food categories according to their chemical characteristics. The fish and shellfish group had the highest contents of As (1351 ng/g wet weight, ww), Cd (277 ng/g ww), and Hg (48 ng/g ww), while the sugar group had the highest content of Pb (251 ng/g ww). For a person with a body weight of 68 kg, the dietary intakes of As (77 microg/day), Cd (20 microg/day), Hg (5 microg/day), and Pb (206 microg/day) are lower than the provisional tolerable weekly intake values established by the FAO/WHO. Consequently, the total intakes of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in Santiago (Chile) are within the limits estimated as safe.
