RESUMO

Within bioplastics, natural poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) stands out as fully biocompatible and biodegradable, even in marine environments; however, its high isotacticity and crystallinity limits its mechanical properties and hence its applications. PHB can also be synthesized with different tacticities via a catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-ß-butyrolactone (BBL), paving the way to PHB with better thermomechanical and processability properties. In this work, the catalyst family is extended based on aluminum phenoxy-imine methyl catalyst [AlMeL2], that reveals efficient in the ROP of BBL, to the halogeno analogous complex [AlClL2]. As well, the impact on the ROP mechanism of different initiators is further explored with a particular focus in dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), a hardly studied initiator for the ROP of BBL. A thorough mechanistic study is performed that evidences the presence of two concomitant DMAP-mediated mechanisms, that lead to either a DMAP or a crotonate end-capping group. Besides, in order to increase the possibilities of PHB post-polymerization functionalization, the introduction of a side-chain functionality is explored, establishing the copolymerization of BBL with ß-allyloxymethylene propiolactone (BPLOAll), resulting in well-defined P(BBL-co-BPLOAll) copolymers.

Extracellular vesicles represent a group of structures with the capacity to communicate with different cells and organs. This complex network of interactions can regulate multiple physiological processes in the organism. Very importantly, these processes can be altered during the appearance of different diseases including cancer, metabolic diseases, etc. In addition, these extracellular vesicles can transport different cargoes, altering the initiation of the disease, driving the progression, or even accelerating the pathogenesis. Then, we have explored the implication of these structures in different alterations such as pancreatic cancer, and in different metabolic alterations such as diabetes and its complications and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Finally, we have explored in more detail the communication between the liver and the pancreas. In summary, extracellular vesicles represent a very efficient system for the communication among different tissues and permit an efficient system as biomarkers of the disease, as well as being involved in the extracellular-vesicle-mediated transport of molecules, serving as a potential therapy for different diseases.

PURPOSE: Depression is among the most common comorbid psychiatric disorders of patients with breast cancer. Depression decreases patient quality of life and, if untreated, can adversely affect cancer treatment. We sought to identify treatment barriers for women with breast cancer receiving psychotherapy for depression. Findings may help policy makers and researchers determine funding and design of future studies involving this population, especially in communities with high rates of health disparities. METHODS: We used data from a randomized trial for women with breast cancer and current DSM-IV non-psychotic unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD). Patients were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of one of three psychotherapies and attrition was assessed by whether subjects completed 12 weekly treatment sessions. We used descriptive analyses and logistic regression to identify treatment barriers. R shiny was used to determine study patient residences. RESULTS: Of 134 randomized patients, 84 (62.7%) were Hispanic. Fifty-nine patients (44%) either did not start or dropped out of treatment, 49 (83.1%) of them being Hispanic. Being a Hispanic woman, less educated, and geographically distant from treatment significantly predicted attrition. Single Hispanic mothers had significantly higher attrition risk than married and/or childless women. CONCLUSION: Identifying barriers to treatment is important to improve treatment adherence for patients with concurrent diagnoses of breast cancer and MDD, especially for traditionally underserved minorities. Additional support such as affordable tele-medicine, multi-language assistance, financial aid for transportation and child-care, and allocation of more funds to address some identified barriers deserve consideration to improve treatment adherence and outcomes.

Introduction: We examined the association between tobacco product use and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Waves 1-5 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. Methods: Adults ≥40 years with an ever COPD diagnosis were included in cross-sectional (Wave 5) and longitudinal (Waves 1 to 5) analyses. Tobacco use included 13 mutually exclusive categories of past 30-day (P30D) single use and polyuse with P30D exclusive cigarette use and ≥5-year cigarette cessation as reference groups. Multivariable linear regression and generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine the association between tobacco use and HRQoL as measured by the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Global-10 questionnaire. Results: Of 1670 adults, 79.4% ever used cigarettes; mean (standard error [SE]) pack years was 30.9 (1.1). In cross-sectional analysis, P30D exclusive cigarette use, and e-cigarette/cigarette dual use were associated with worse HRQoL compared to ≥5-year cigarette cessation. Compared to P30D exclusive cigarette use, never tobacco use and ≥5-year cigarette cessation were associated with better HRQoL, while e-cigarette/cigarette dual use had worse HRQoL. Longitudinally (n=686), e-cigarette/cigarette dual use was associated with worsening HRQoL compared to both reference groups. Only never tobacco use was associated with higher HRQoL over time compared to P30D exclusive cigarette use. Conclusions: E-cigarette/cigarette dual use was associated with worse HRQoL compared to ≥5-year cigarette cessation and exclusive cigarette use. Never use and ≥5-year cigarette cessation were the only categories associated with higher HRQoL compared to exclusive cigarette use. Findings highlight the importance of complete smoking cessation for individuals with COPD.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cannabis using a tobacco-derived cigar shell or wrap, called blunt smoking, exposes individuals to non-trivial amounts of nicotine. The extent smoking blunts impact the risk of initiating other tobacco products is not well understood. We investigated if past-year blunt smoking is related to the risk of initiating cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and cigars. METHODS: We obtained data on a nationally representative, non-institutionalized, civilian cohort of US residents aged 12 years and older who had never used cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or any cigar at baseline and surveyed annually for three years from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. We estimated the proportional hazard (odds) of initiating these tobacco products associated with past-year blunt smoking, non-blunt cannabis use, or neither using discrete-time survival analyses. RESULTS: Smoking blunts increased the risk of starting cigarettes (OR = 4.5), e-cigarettes (OR = 3.7), and cigars (OR = 6.7) compared to using neither blunts nor cannabis. Non-blunt cannabis use also increased the risk of starting cigarettes (OR = 4.0) but moderately for e-cigarettes (OR = 2.8) and any cigar (OR = 2.2). Blunt use was strongly related to starting combustible tobacco (cigarettes or cigars; OR = 9.0) and any three tobacco products (OR = 10.9). Exploratory findings showed that cigarillos drove cigar results and effect modification by age, race/ethnicity, and sex. CONCLUSIONS: People who smoke blunts risk starting cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and cigars more than those who abstain from cannabis. Blunts may contribute to tobacco initiation above cannabis alone.

Importance: Adults with psychotic disorders have high premature mortality, partly due to the high prevalence of smoking in this population. Yet recent data are lacking on tobacco product use among US adults with a history of psychosis. Objective: To examine the sociodemographic characteristics and behavioral health status; types of tobacco products used; prevalence of use by age, sex, and race and ethnicity; and nicotine dependence severity and smoking cessation methods among community-dwelling adults with vs without psychosis. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study analyzed nationally representative, self-reported, cross-sectional data of adults (aged ≥18 years) who participated in the Wave 5 survey (conducted from December 2018 to November 2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. Data analyses were conducted between September 2021 and October 2022. Exposure: PATH Study respondents were classified as having lifetime psychosis if they answered yes to whether they had ever received from a clinician (eg, physician, therapist, or other mental health professional) a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, psychosis, or psychotic illness or episode. Main Outcomes and Measures: Use of any and major types of tobacco products, severity of nicotine dependence, and cessation methods. Results: Among the 29 045 community-dwelling adults who participated in the PATH Study (weighted median [IQR] age, 30.0 [22.0-50.0] years; weighted percentage estimates: 14 976 females (51.5%); 16.0% Hispanic, 11.1% non-Hispanic Black, 65.0% non-Hispanic White, and 8.0% non-Hispanic other race and ethnicity [American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and more than 1 race]), 2.9% (95% CI, 2.62%-3.10%) reported receiving a lifetime psychosis diagnosis. Compared with those without psychosis, people with psychosis had a higher adjusted prevalence of past-month any tobacco use (41.3% vs 27.7%; adjusted risk ratio [RR], 1.49 [95% CI, 1.36-1.63]) as well as cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and other tobacco product use overall and in most examined subgroups; they also had a higher past-month prevalence of dual cigarette and e-cigarette use (13.5% vs 10.1%; P = .02), polycombustible tobacco use (12.1% vs 8.6%; P = .007), and polycombustible and noncombustible tobacco use (22.1% vs 12.4%; P < .001). Among adults with past-month cigarette use, those with vs without psychosis had a higher adjusted mean nicotine dependence scores overall (54.6 vs 49.5; P < .001) and within the 45-years-or-older (61.7 vs 54.9; P = .002), female (56.9 vs 49.8; P = .001), Hispanic (53.7 vs 40.0; P = .01), and Black (53.4 vs 46.0; P = .005) groups. They were also more likely to make a quit attempt (60.0% vs 54.1%; adjusted RR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.01-1.21]) and use counseling, a quitline, or a support group for tobacco cessation (5.6% vs 2.5%; adjusted RR, 2.25 [95% CI, 1.21-3.30]). Conclusions and Relevance: In this study, the high prevalence of tobacco use, polytobacco use, and making a quit attempt as well as the severity of nicotine dependence among community-dwelling adults with a history of psychosis highlighted the urgency for tailored tobacco cessation interventions for this population. Such strategies must be evidence-based and age, sex, and race and ethnicity appropriate.

BACKGROUND: Research on cigarettes and adult asthma offers mixed findings, perhaps due to overlap with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inadequate adjustment for other smoke exposures. Associations between other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, and asthma are also understudied. RESEARCH QUESTION: Using Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study waves 2-4 (2014/2015-2016/2017) data, we assessed the relation between tobacco product use and asthma in persons unlikely to have COPD. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Prospective study of 10 267 adults aged 18-39 years without COPD diagnoses. Past-month tobacco use at wave 2 was modelled first as combustible versus non-combustible use and second as specific product categories (former, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah, smokeless tobacco). Outcomes included lifetime asthma prevalence at wave 2, incidence (waves 3 and 4) and Asthma Control Test score (lower=worse). Multivariable regressions adjusted for predictors of asthma, including other smoke exposures: cigarette pack-years, secondhand smoke and marijuana use. Sensitivity analyses examined findings when persons >39 years and those with both COPD and asthma were added, and when smoke exposure adjustments were removed. RESULTS: No product, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, was associated with prevalence or incidence of asthma. Among people with asthma at wave 2, combustible tobacco (beta=-0.86, 95% CI (-1.32 to -0.39)) and cigarettes (beta=-1.14, 95% CI (-1.66 to -0.62)) were associated with worse asthma control. No tobacco product was associated with asthma control over time. In sensitivity analyses, tobacco use became associated with incident asthma as adults >39 years and those with asthma+COPD were added, and as adjustments for other smoke exposures were omitted. INTERPRETATION: Although cigarette use was associated with worse asthma control, there were no longitudinal associations between combustible tobacco or e-cigarette use and new onset or worsening asthma in these preliminary analyses. Research on tobacco and asthma should exclude COPD and adjust for smoking history and other smoke exposures.

Importance: Information about national substance use trends among youths and adults after mid-March 2020 is limited due to constraints on surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To evaluate whether substance use prevalence in the early part of the pandemic (2020) differed from the prepandemic periods of 2018 to 2019 and 2016 to 2018. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study was a repeated analysis of 2016 to 2020 data from a nationally representative sample of youths and adults in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. Participants were representative of the US civilian noninstitutionalized population. Household residents age 13 years or older were interviewed in person from 2016 to 2019 and via telephone in 2020. Exposures: Age, calendar year. Main Outcomes and Measures: Past 30-day self-reported use of any tobacco, any alcohol, binge drinking, cannabis, and any other illegal or misused prescription drugs. Results: The overall nationally representative 2020 sample included 7129 youths (ages 13-17 years), 3628 young adults (ages 18-20 years), and 8874 adults (ages ≥21 years). Comparing 2018 to 2019 with 2020 among youths, prevalence of all substances used declined (eg, cannabis use declined in those aged 16-17 years from 14.9% to 7.6%; absolute difference, -7.3 percentage points [95% CI -8.8 to -5.8 percentage points]). Among young adults, prevalence of all substances other than any alcohol decreased significantly (eg, tobacco use declined from 37.8% to 22.8%; absolute difference, -15.1 percentage points [95% CI -16.8 to -13.3 percentage points]). In adults ages 21 to 24 years, any tobacco use declined from 39.0% to 30.9% (absolute difference, -8.2 percentage points [95% CI, -10.6 to -5.7 percentage points]), and alcohol use increased from 60.2% to 65.2% (absolute difference, 5.0 percentage points [95% CI, 2.3 to 7.7 percentage points]). Among adults aged 25 years or older, any tobacco use declined from 39.0% to 30.9% (absolute difference, -8.2 percentage points [95% CI, -10.6 to -5.7 percentage points]), cannabis use increased from 11.3% to 12.4% (absolute difference, 1.2 percentage points [95% CI, 0.3 to 2.0 percentage points]), and other substance use declined from 5.8% to 3.7% (absolute difference, -2.1 percentage points [95% CI, -2.9 to -1.4 percentage points]). Conclusions and Relevance: In this cross-sectional study, substance use decreased between 2019 and 2020 among those aged 13 to 20 years; consistent declines were not seen in older persons other than tobacco use reductions, and cannabis use increased among adults ages 25 years and older. While social changes during the COVID-19 pandemic could have affected substance use, findings should be interpreted with caution due to differences in data collection methods in 2016 to 2019 and 2020.

Background: Prior research suggests that psychiatric disorders could be linked to increased mortality among patients with COVID-19. However, whether all or specific psychiatric disorders are intrinsic risk factors of death in COVID-19 or whether these associations reflect the greater prevalence of medical risk factors in people with psychiatric disorders has yet to be evaluated. Methods: We performed an observational, multicenter, retrospective cohort study to examine the association between psychiatric disorders and mortality among patients hospitalized for laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 at 36 Greater Paris University hospitals. Results: Of 15,168 adult patients, 857 (5.7%) had an ICD-10 diagnosis of psychiatric disorder. Over a mean follow-up period of 14.6 days (SD = 17.9), 326 of 857 (38.0%) patients with a diagnosis of psychiatric disorder died compared with 1276 of 14,311 (8.9%) patients without such a diagnosis (odds ratio 6.27, 95% CI 5.40-7.28, p < .01). When adjusting for age, sex, hospital, current smoking status, and medications according to compassionate use or as part of a clinical trial, this association remained significant (adjusted odds ratio 3.27, 95% CI 2.78-3.85, p < .01). However, additional adjustments for obesity and number of medical conditions resulted in a nonsignificant association (adjusted odds ratio 1.02, 95% CI 0.84-1.23, p = .86). Exploratory analyses after the same adjustments suggested that a diagnosis of mood disorders was significantly associated with reduced mortality, which might be explained by the use of antidepressants. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the increased risk of COVID-19-related mortality in individuals with psychiatric disorders hospitalized for COVID-19 might be explained by the greater number of medical conditions and the higher prevalence of obesity in this population and not by the underlying psychiatric disease.

Malignant germ cell tumors (MGCTs) localized in the uterus are rare in prepubertal girls. They typically occur in postmenopausal women and are characterized by the presence of a pelvic mass and transvaginal bleeding. In this case, the authors describe the clinical features, radiologic findings, histopathologic description, and treatment received by an infant with a primary yolk sac tumor of the uterine wall. Currently, treatment for uterine GCTs is based on guidelines for GCTs. Surgery and bleomycin, etoposide, cisplatin (pBEP) chemotherapy are effective for uterine yolk sac tumors. After 46 months of clinical follow-up, which included abdominopelvic ultrasound and tumor marker assessments, our patient is free of disease, suggesting a favorable outcome.

Spinal epidural empyema (SEE) represents a neurological emergency in veterinary medicine, but information on this condition is limited to date. This retrospective case series study describes the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features, and the outcome of conservative or surgical management of SEE in 30 dogs diagnosed with SEE from September 2015 to March 2020 at one referral neurology centre. The most frequent clinical sign was pain 28/30 (93%), and 22/30 (73%) showed neurological signs with ambulatory paraparesis/tetraparesis 15/30 (50%), monoparesis 1/30 (3.3%), non-ambulatory paraparesis 3/30 (10%), or paraplegia 3/30 (10%). MRI was valuable for the diagnosis and in the follow-up. In this group of dogs, 24/30 (80%) were conservatively treated and 6/30 (20%) were surgically treated. The outcome was considered favourable in all dogs: 20/30 (66.6%) achieved full recovery (3 surgically treated and 17 medically treated) and 10/30 (33.3%) dogs had an improvement in the neurological signs with residual ambulatory paresis (3 surgically treated and 7 medically treated). Surgical treatment showed better short-term (7 days) outcomes than medical treatment in non-ambulatory paraparetic or paraplegic dogs (33%). Nevertheless, this study suggests that a good recovery may be achieved with conservative treatment even for non-ambulatory or paraplegic dogs. Further prospective studies, with a standardised protocol of diagnostic tests and a homogeneous distribution of conservatively and surgically treated dogs, are needed to establish treatment guidelines.

Objective: Sleep alterations have been suggested as a cause and consequence of psychiatric disorders. In this context, we evaluated the incidence of psychiatric disorders following sleep complaints in adults with major depressive episode (MDE).Methods: In a large, nationally representative 3-year prospective survey, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions conducted in 2001-2002 (Wave 1) and 2004-2005 (Wave 2), we used structural equation modeling to examine shared and specific effects of trouble falling asleep, early morning awakening, and hypersomnia on incidence of common comorbid DSM-IV disorders among patients with MDE. The analyses adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, including sedative or tranquilizer use.Results: Among participants with MDE at Wave 1, 3-year incidence rates were dysthymia = 2.9%, general anxiety disorder = 8.2%, panic disorder = 3.4%, social anxiety disorder = 4.0%, specific phobia = 3.0%, alcohol use disorder = 8.1%, nicotine dependence = 6.2%, cannabis use disorder = 2.7%, and other drug use disorder = 4.9%. Participants with 3-year incident psychiatric disorders commonly had trouble falling asleep (67.6% for cannabis use disorder to 76.4% for panic disorder), early morning awakening (43.3% for cannabis use disorder to 55.6% for dysthymia), and hypersomnia (51.3% for nicotine use disorder to 72.1% for social anxiety disorder). The effects of the incident general psychopathology factor, representing mechanisms related to incidence of all psychiatric disorders, were exerted almost exclusively through a factor representing shared effect across all sleep complaints. Sleep complaints were associated with increased risk of incident psychiatric disorders, independent of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.Conclusions: These findings suggest that sleep complaints should be clinically assessed in all psychiatric disorders, as these prodromal symptoms might constitute transdiagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for prevention.

Importance: Evolving tobacco use patterns, including increasing electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use, warrant re-examination of the associations between tobacco use and oral health. Objective: To examine associations between tobacco product use and incidence of adverse oral health outcomes. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study used nationally representative data from wave (W) 1 to W5 (2013-2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Recruitment used a stratified address-based, area-probability household sample of the noninstitutionalized US civilian population. The W1 cohort included respondents aged 18 years and older without lifetime history of oral health outcomes at W1 or W3, depending on when the outcome was first assessed. Data analysis was performed from October 2021 to September 2022. Exposures: Current (every day or someday use) established (lifetime use of at least 100 cigarettes or "fairly regular" use of other products) use of cigarettes, ENDS, cigars, pipes, hookah, snus, and smokeless tobacco, excluding snus at W1 to W4. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcomes were past 12-month self-reported diagnosis of gum disease and precancerous oral lesions (W2-W5) and bone loss around teeth, bleeding after brushing or flossing, loose teeth, and 1 or more teeth removed (W4-W5). Results: Sample sizes varied across the 6 oral health outcomes (13 149 respondents for the gum disease sample, 14 993 respondents for the precancerous oral lesions sample, 16 312 respondents for the bone loss around teeth sample, 10 286 respondents for the bleeding after brushing or flossing sample, 15 686 respondents for the loose teeth sample, and 12 061 respondents for the 1 or more teeth removed sample). Slightly more than half of adults (52%-54% across the 6 samples) were women, and the majority were of non-Hispanic White race and ethnicity. Cox proportional hazards models were developed with covariates that included time-dependent tobacco use variables mutually adjusted for each other. Cigarette smoking was positively associated with incidence of gum disease diagnosis (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR], 1.33; 95% CI, 1.11-1.60), loose teeth (AHR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.05-1.75), and 1 or more teeth removed (AHR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.18-1.74). Cigar smoking was positively associated with incidence of precancerous oral lesions (AHR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.38-3.43). In addition, hookah smoking was positively associated with incidence of gum disease diagnosis (AHR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.20-2.63), and ENDS use was positively associated with incidence of bleeding after brushing or flossing (AHR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.04-1.54). No associations were observed between snus and smokeless tobacco excluding snus and incidence of oral health outcomes. Conclusions and Relevance: The observed associations of combustible tobacco use with incidence of several adverse oral health outcomes and ENDS use with incidence of bleeding after brushing or flossing highlight the importance of longitudinal studies and emphasize the continued importance of tobacco cessation counseling and resources in clinical practice.

This multicentric retrospective study describes the clinical and MRI features and pathological studies of spinal lymphoma in 27 cats. MRI characteristics and their possible correlations with histopathological findings were studied. The most frequent neurological signs were rapidly progressive paraparesis (62.9%) or paraplegia (22.2%). Bimodal age distribution was found with 40.7% of cats aged ≤2.5 years (63.6% of them FeLV positive), and 44.4% of cats aged ≥8 years (16.7% of them FeLV positive). Spinal lymphoma was generally presented on MRI as an ill-defined epidural focal lesion with moderate to severe spinal cord compression, expanding more than one vertebral body. MRI lesions were typically localized in the lumbar vertebral segment (p = 0.01), circumferential to the spinal cord (p = 0.04), hyperintense on T2-weighted sequences (p = 4.3e-06), and isointense on T1-weighted sequences (p = 8.9e-07). The degree and pattern of contrast enhancement were variable. Other morphological patterns included paravertebral masses with extension into the vertebral canal and lesions centered in the spinal nerve roots. Involvement of vertebrae and adjacent spinal soft tissues was present in 74% of cases when present vertebral involvement was characterized by cortical sparing. When follow-up MRI studies (n = 4) were performed after treatment new lesions of similar nature but different localizations and extension were observed. Confirmation of spinal lymphoma was performed by CSF analysis in 4/27 (14.8%) of cases, by FNA in 6/27 (22.2%) of cases, by surgical biopsy in 10/27 (37%) of cases, by FNA and surgical biopsy in 1/27 (3.7%) of cases, by CSF, FNA, surgical biopsy and postmorten examination in 1/27 (3.7%) of cases, and postmorten studies in 5/27 (18.5%) of cases. Antemortem diagnosis was achieved in 22/27 (81.5%) cats. The presence of necrosis in histopathological studies as an unfavorable prognostic indicator of survival was significantly more probable when lesions were not hyperintense on T2-weighted sequences (p = 0.017). Spinal lymphoma in cats is a complex entity with heterogeneous imaging and histopathological appearance. However, certain MRI features may support a tentative diagnosis, which in a group of cases can be confirmed when combined with the CSF findings. For the rest of the cases, tissue sampling assisted by imaging findings remains necessary for definitive diagnosis.

One of the ingredients used for brewing is barley, which should be malted; it is considered the most polluting agricultural input. On the other hand, food wastage is today a widespread problem that causes significant environmental damage and also generates large economic losses worldwide. One of the most wasted food products is bread; it is estimated that hundreds of tons of bread are wasted every day worldwide. In this study, the brewing of ale beers with bread was carried out. For this purpose, up to 50% of the malt weight was replaced by different types of bread: wheat bread, whole wheat bread, rye bread, and corn bread. A physicochemical and sensory comparison was made with 100% malt ale beer. All beers brewed with bread had an alcoholic strength similar to that of the control beer, except the corn beer. Beers brewed with whole grain bread showed a higher antioxidant capacity and a higher total polyphenol content. The sensory analysis presented different profiles depending on the type of bread; in general, the addition of bread created a greater olfactory intensity in nose. Thus, it was found that it is possible to brew beer with bread substituting up to 50% of the malt. In addition, it was also shown that the beer brewed with whole wheat bread had similar characteristics to the control beer, even improving some beneficial health properties, representing a great advantage for the brewing industry all over the world.

BACKGROUND: We examined the association of non-cigarette tobacco use on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. METHODS: There were 13,752 participants ≥ 40 years with Wave 1 (W1) data for prevalence analyses, including 6945 adults without COPD for incidence analyses; W1-5 (2013-2019) data were analyzed. W1 tobacco use was modeled as 12 mutually-exclusive categories of past 30-day (P30D) single and polyuse, with two reference categories (current exclusive cigarette and never tobacco). Prevalence and incidence ratios of self-reported physician-diagnosed COPD were estimated using weighted multivariable Poisson regression. RESULTS: W1 mean (SE) age was 58.1(0.1) years; mean cigarette pack-years was similar for all categories involving cigarettes and exclusive use of e-cigarettes (all > 20), greater than exclusive cigar users (< 10); and COPD prevalence was 7.7%. Compared to P30D cigarette use, never tobacco, former tobacco, and cigar use were associated with lower COPD prevalence (RR = 0.33, (95% confidence interval-CI) [0.26, 0.42]; RR = 0.57, CI [0.47, 0.70]; RR = 0.46, CI [0.28, 0.76], respectively); compared to never tobacco use, all categories except cigar and smokeless tobacco use were associated with higher COPD prevalence (RR former = 1.72, CI [1.33, 2.23]; RR cigarette = 3.00, CI [2.37, 3.80]; RR e-cigarette = 2.22, CI [1.44, 3.42]; RR cigarette + e-cigarette = 3.10, CI [2.39, 4.02]; RR polycombusted = 3.37, CI [2.44, 4.65]; RR polycombusted plus noncombusted = 2.75, CI]1.99, 3.81]). COPD incidence from W2-5 was 5.8%. Never and former tobacco users had lower COPD risk compared to current cigarette smokers (RR = 0.52, CI [0.35, 0.77]; RR = 0.47, CI [0.32, 0.70], respectively). Compared to never use, cigarette, smokeless, cigarette plus e-cigarette, and polycombusted tobacco use were associated with higher COPD incidence (RR = 1.92, CI [1.29, 2.86]; RR = 2.08, CI [1.07, 4.03]; RR = 1.99, CI [1.29, 3.07]; RR = 2.59, CI [1.60, 4.21], respectively); exclusive use of e-cigarettes was not (RR = 1.36, CI [0.55, 3.39]). CONCLUSIONS: E-cigarettes and all use categories involving cigarettes were associated with higher COPD prevalence compared to never use, reflecting, in part, the high burden of cigarette exposure in these groups. Cigarette-but not exclusive e-cigarette-use was also strongly associated with higher COPD incidence. Compared to cigarette use, only quitting tobacco was protective against COPD development.

Flowering plants (angiosperms) can grow at extreme altitudes, and have been observed growing as high as 6,400 metres above sea level1,2; however, the molecular mechanisms that enable plant adaptation specifically to altitude are unknown. One distinguishing feature of increasing altitude is a reduction in the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2). Here we investigated the relationship between altitude and oxygen sensing in relation to chlorophyll biosynthesis-which requires molecular oxygen3-and hypoxia-related gene expression. We show that in etiolated seedlings of angiosperm species, steady-state levels of the phototoxic chlorophyll precursor protochlorophyllide are influenced by sensing of atmospheric oxygen concentration. In Arabidopsis thaliana, this is mediated by the PLANT CYSTEINE OXIDASE (PCO) N-degron pathway substrates GROUP VII ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR transcription factors (ERFVIIs). ERFVIIs positively regulate expression of FLUORESCENT IN BLUE LIGHT (FLU), which represses the first committed step of chlorophyll biosynthesis, forming an inactivation complex with tetrapyrrole synthesis enzymes that are negatively regulated by ERFVIIs, thereby suppressing protochlorophyllide. In natural populations representing diverse angiosperm clades, we find oxygen-dependent altitudinal clines for steady-state levels of protochlorophyllide, expression of inactivation complex components and hypoxia-related genes. Finally, A. thaliana accessions from contrasting altitudes display altitude-dependent ERFVII activity and accumulation. We thus identify a mechanism for genetic adaptation to absolute altitude through alteration of the sensitivity of the oxygen-sensing system.

Importance: Tobacco use is highly concentrated in persons with mental illness. Objectives: To assess trends in past-month prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults with vs without past-year depression, substance use disorders (SUDs), or both, using nationally representative data. Design, Setting, and Participants: Exploratory, serial, cross-sectional study based on data from 558 960 individuals aged 18 years or older who participated in the 2006-2019 US National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. Exposure: Past-year major depressive episode (MDE) and SUD using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition, Text Revision) criteria. Main Outcomes and Measures: Past-month self-reported cigarette use, adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Of the sampled 558 960 adults, 41.4% (unweighted) were aged 18 to 25 years, 29.8% (unweighted) were aged 26 to 49 years, and 53.4% (unweighted) were women. From 2006 to 2019, the past-month self-reported cigarette smoking prevalence declined significantly among adults with MDE from 37.3% to 24.2% for an average annual percent change of -3.2 (95% CI, -3.5 to -2.8; P < .001), adults with SUD from 46.5% to 35.8% for an average annual percent change of -1.7 (95% CI, -2.8 to -0.6; P = .002), and adults with co-occurring MDE and SUD from 50.7% to 37.0% for an annual average annual percent change of -2.1 (95% CI, -3.1 to -1.2; P < .001). The prevalence declined significantly for each examined age, sex, and racial and ethnic subgroup with MDE and with SUD (all P < .05), except for no significant changes in American Indian or Alaska Native adults with MDE (P = .98) or with SUD (P = .46). Differences in prevalence of cigarette smoking between adults with vs without MDE declined significantly for adults overall from 11.5% to 6.6%, for an average annual percent change of -3.4 (95% CI, -4.1 to -2.7; P < .001); significant average annual percent change declines were also seen for men (-5.1 [95% CI, -7.2 to -2.9]; P < .001); for women (-2.7 [95% CI, -3.9 to -1.5]; P < .001); for those aged 18 through 25 years (-5.2 [95% CI, -7.6 to -2.8]; P < .001); for those aged 50 years or older (-4.7 [95% CI, -8.0 to -1.2]; P = .01); for Hispanic individuals (-4.4 [95% CI, -8.0 to -0.5]; P = .03), and for White individuals (-3.6 [95% CI, -4.5 to -2.7]; P < .001). For American Indian or Alaska Native adults, prevalence did not significantly differ between those with vs without MDE during 2006-2012 but was significantly higher for those with MDE during 2013-2019 (difference, 11.3%; 95% CI, 0.9 to 21.7; P = .04). Differences among those with vs without SUD declined for women for an average annual percent change of -1.8 (95% CI, -2.8 to -0.9; P = .001). Conclusions and Relevance: In this exploratory, serial, cross-sectional study, there were significant reductions in the prevalence of self-reported cigarette smoking among US adults with major depressive episode, substance use disorder, or both, between 2006 and 2019. However, continued efforts are needed to reduce the prevalence further.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have not clearly established risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among smokers who switch to exclusive use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). We compared cardiovascular disease incidence in combustible-tobacco users, those who transitioned to ENDS use, and those who quit tobacco with never tobacco users. METHODS: This prospective cohort study analyzes five waves of Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study data, Wave 1 (2013-2014) through Wave 5 (2018-2019). Cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence was captured over three intervals (Waves 1 to 3, Waves 2 to 4, and Waves 3 to 5). Participants were adults (40+ years old) without a history of CVD for the first two waves of any interval. Change in tobacco use status, from exclusive past 30 day use of any combustible-tobacco product to either exclusive past 30 day ENDS use, dual past 30 day use of ENDS and combustible-tobacco, or no past 30 day use of any tobacco, between the first two waves of an interval was used to predict onset of CVD between the second and third waves in the interval. CVD incidence was defined as a new self-report of being told by a health professional that they had congestive heart failure, stroke, or a myocardial infarction. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) analyses combined 10,548 observations across intervals from 7820 eligible respondents. RESULTS: Overall, there were 191 observations of CVD among 10,548 total observations (1.7%, standard error (SE) = 0.2), with 40 among 3014 never users of tobacco (1.5%, SE = 0.3). In multivariable models, CVD incidence was not significantly different for any tobacco user groups compared to never users. There were 126 observations of CVD among 6263 continuing exclusive combustible-tobacco users (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.44; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87-2.39), 15 observations of CVD among 565 who transitioned to dual use (AOR = 1.85; 0.78-4.37), and 10 observations of CVD among 654 who quit using tobacco (AOR = 1.18; 0.33-4.26). There were no observations of CVD among 53 who transitioned to exclusive ENDS use. CONCLUSIONS: This study found no difference in CVD incidence by tobacco status over three 3 year intervals, even for tobacco quitters. It is possible that additional waves of PATH Study data, combined with information from other large longitudinal cohorts with careful tracking of ENDS use patterns may help to further clarify this relationship.

The purpose of this period prevalence study is to compare the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in current/former established smokeless tobacco (SLT) users (ever SLT users who have used the product fairly regularly) to those who were: 1) never established cigarette smokers and SLT users, and 2) current/former established exclusive cigarette smokers (have smoked at least a 100 or more cigarettes in lifetime) only, adjusting for known risk factors for CVD. Analyses included 4,703 men ≥ 40 years of age who participated in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, Waves: 1-4, conducted between 2013 and 2017. Current users were those using SLT products daily or on some days, whereas former users had not used SLT and/or cigarettes in the past 12 months. CVD prevalence was defined as a self-reported diagnosis of congestive heart failure, stroke, or myocardial infarction. Among current/former established SLT users, years of use defined exposure history, while pack-years defined exposure history for smokers. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported with trend tests to examine dose-response associations. Current/former established exclusive SLT users were not significantly more likely to have had any CVD compared to never established cigarette and SLT users (OR = 1.7 [0.8-3.7]), or current/former established exclusive cigarette smokers (OR = 0.9 [0.5-1.8]). Current/former established exclusive cigarette smokers were more likely to have had any CVD compared to those who were never established cigarette and SLT users (OR = 1.6 [1.1-2.3]).
