A 15-year-old, mixed breed, male horse was attended with a history of multiple abscesses in the cervical region with a three-year evolution. Upon admission, three fistulous tracts with drainage of purulent secretions in the cervical region, low body score, restriction of cervical movements, and painful sensitivity to palpation were observed. The horse was diagnosed with osteomyelitis secondary to Streptococcus equi infection. The initial treatment was antibiotic therapy and local curative. Owing to the lack of response, surgical debridement was performed. An initial favorable response was observed; however, after 4 months, drainage recurred, and the animal was euthanized. A post-mortem computed tomography scan was performed to obtain details of the injury. Cervical osteomyelitis is rare, and its occurrence through hematogenous spread in adult horses and the tomographic findings had not been reported previously. The long period of evolution, difficulty in performing an aggressive debridement, and the presence of multi-drug resistant bacteria contributed to the negative outcome.(AU)


Um equino macho, sem raça definida, de 15 anos de idade, foi atendido com histórico de múltiplos abscessos cervicais com evolução de três anos. Na admissão, foram observados: três trajetos fistulosos com drenagem de material purulento na região cervical; baixo escore corporal; restrição de movimentos cervicais; e sensibilidade dolorosa à palpação da região. Foi diagnosticada osteomielite vertebral cervical secundária à infecção por Streptococcus equi. O tratamento inicial consistiu na administração de antibióticos e curativo local. Na ausência de resposta à terapia, realizou-se o debridamento cirúrgico. Inicialmente, obteve-se uma resposta favorável, entretanto, após quatro meses, houve recidiva da lesão e o animal foi submetido à eutanásia. Realizou-se tomografia computadorizada no post mortem para detalhamento da lesão. A osteomielite vertebral cervical é rara, e sua ocorrência por meio de disseminação hematógena em animais adultos não foi previamente reportada. O longo período de evolução, aliado à dificuldade de realização de um debridamento agressivo, e a característica multirresistente do agente etiológico contribuíram para o desfecho negativo do caso.(AU)

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a pastagem, o desempenho, o conforto térmico e os parâmetros hematológicos de bovinos Nelore na fase de terminação em sistemas integrados de produção agropecuária com duas densidades de árvores (ILPF-1L= 196 árvores ha-1 e ILPF-3L=448 árvores ha-1) e em pleno sol (ILP). Foram avaliados a massa e a composição morfológica da forragem, o ganho médio diário, o ganho de peso por área e a taxa de lotação no verão e no outono, bem como as variáveis climáticas dos sistemas em três horários e parâmetros hematológicos dos animais (n=60). A massa de forragem foi superior no tratamento ILP e no verão (P<0,05). Porém, a redução da massa de forragem nos sistemas ILPFs não interferiu no desempenho dos animais (P>0,05). A temperatura ambiente, a temperatura do globo e o índice de temperatura e umidade foram melhores nos tratamentos com sombreamento e no período da manhã, proporcionando maior conforto aos animais, sendo ainda confirmado pelo menor volume globular dos bovinos em ILP (P<0,05). Conclui-se que os sistemas com componente arbóreo diminuem a massa de forragem, mas essa redução não altera o desempenho dos animais na fase de terminação. Além disso, os sistemas ILPFs melhoram o conforto térmico, entretanto essa melhora não foi suficiente para favorecer o desempenho.(AU)


The objective of this work was to evaluate pasture, performace, thermal comfort, and haematological parameters of Nellore cattle in the finishing phase in integrated crop-livestock systems with two tree densities (ICLF-1L= 196 ha -1 trees and ICLF-3L= 448 ha -1 trees) and in full sun (ICL). The forage mass morphological composition of the pasture average daily gain, weight gain per area, stocking rate of the animals were evaluated in summer and autumn, and the climatic variables of systems we evaluated at three different times, and haematological parameters of the animals (n= 60). The forage mass was higher in the ICL treatment and summer (P<0.05). However, the reduction of the forage mass in the ILPFs systems did not interfere with the performance of the animals (P>0.05). Ambient temperature, globe temperature and temperature and humidity index were better in shade treatments and in the morning, providing greater comfort to the animals, and was also confirmed by the lower globular volume of the bovines in ICL (P<0.05). It is concluded that the systems with trees reduce the forage mass but this reduction does not alter the animals' performance in the finishing phase. In addition, ICLFs improve the thermal comfort of the animals, however, this improvement was not enough to favor their performance.(AU)

Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease that affects a large part of the world population. Knowing the sand fly fauna of a region is of fundamental importance for guiding health surveillance actions related to the prevention and control of leishmaniasis. A total of 86 specimens of sand flies (60 females and 26 males) were collected. Using the classification proposed by Galati (2003), the following species were identified: Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912), Migonemyia migonei (França, 1920), Evandromyia cortelezzi (Brethes, 1923), Ev. sallesi (Galvão & Coutinho, 1939), Nyssomyia whitmani (Atunes & Coutinho, 1939), Psathyromyia lutziana (Costa Lima, 1932), Ev. lenti (Mangabeira, 1938), Brumptomyia sp. (França and Parrot, 1921), and Pressatia sp. (Mangabeira, 1942). Using PCR with internal transcribed spacer target to identify infected sand flies, five Lu. longipalpis females were infected with Leishmania spp. Despite the small number of specimens collected, considerable species diversity was found in the study area.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The tachykinin NK2 receptor antagonist ibodutant is under Phase III clinical investigation to treat female patients with irritable bowel syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the NK2 receptor-related gender specificity in a model of colitis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Colitis was induced by rectal instillation of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS, 0.5 mL, 30 mg·mL(-1) in 30% ethanol) in female and male guinea pigs. Electromyographic recording of the responses to colorectal distension (CRD) was made 3 days later. Ibodutant (0.33 , 0.65, 1.9 and 6.5 mg·kg(-1) ) was given s.c., 30 min before CRD. Release of neurokinin A and substance P from isolated mucosal and smooth muscle tissues following treatment with KCl (80 mM) or capsaicin (10 µM) was measured by EIA. Plasma pharmacokinetics of ibodutant following a single s.c. administration (0.73 or 2.1 mg·kg(-1) ) were measured over 24 h. KEY RESULTS: Ibodutant did not affect abdominal contractions in control animals. After TNBS-induced colitis, ibodutant prevented the increased visceral hypersensitivity to CRD in females, at lower doses than in males. Ibodutant pharmacokinetics did not differ between females and males. Tachykinins release was greater in smooth muscle than in mucosal samples. Capsaicin-stimulated release of tachykinins from inflamed mucosal samples from females was significantly lower than in males. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Ibodutant prevented abdominal nociception in a model of visceral hypersensitivity in guinea pigs with a greater efficacy in females than in males. Our results highlight a gender-related difference in colonic visceral hypersensitivity and mucosal nerve activation.

Avaliaram-se a concentração de lactato e a glicemia em sete cadelas em trabalho de parto submetidas à cesariana e em seus respectivos neonatos. O lactato materno foi mensurado utilizando-se medidor portátil e pelo método enzimático colorimétrico. Nos neonatos avaliou-se também o peso ao nascimento. Os valores de lactato materno e neonatal foram estatisticamente diferentes, sendo mais elevado nos neonatos. Ao nascimento, as cadelas e os neonatos encontravam-se normoglicêmicos, e não se observou correlação entre a glicemia de ambos. Os valores de lactato obtidos pelo o analisador portátil (3,5±0,6mmol/L) foram mais altos do que os obtidos pelo método enzimático colorimétrico (1,6±0,6mmol/L). Observou-se correlação significativa entre o peso do neonato e a concentração de lactato, isto é, os filhotes de menor peso apresentaram maior concentração de lactato.


This work evaluated the concentration of lactate and blood glucose in seven bitches in labor subject to caesarean section and in their newborns. The lactate concentration was measured using a portable analyzer and enzymatic colorimetric method. In neonates, the birth weight was evaluated. The maternal and neonatal lactate values were statistically different, being higher in newborns. At birth, the bitches and the newborns had normal glucose status, and no correlation was observed between blood glucose in either. The lactate concentration obtained by the portable analyzer (3.5±0.6mmol/L) was higher than that obtained with the enzymatic colorimetric method (1.6±0.6mmol/L). There was significant correlation between the neonate weight and lactate concentration and in puppies with lighter weight there was a higher concentration of lactate.

BACKGROUND: Activation of proteinase-activated receptor-4 (PAR-4) from the colonic lumen has an antinociceptive effect to colorectal distension (CRD) in mice in basal conditions. We aimed to determine the functional localization of the responsible receptors and to test their role in two different hyperalgesia models. METHODS: Mice received PAR-4 activating peptide (PAR-4-AP, AYPGKF-NH(2)) or vehicle intraperitoneally (IP), and abdominal EMG response to CRD was measured. The next group received PAR-4-AP intracolonically (IC) with or without 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine, a chemical tight junction blocker, before CRD. The SCID mice were used to test the role of lymphocytes in the antihyperalgesic effect. The effects of PAR-4-AP and PAR-4-antagonist (P4pal-10) were evaluated in water avoidance stress (WAS) model and low grade 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) colitis. Spinal Fos protein expression was visualized by immunohistochemistry. KEY RESULTS: The antinociceptive effect of PAR-4-AP disappeared when was administrered IP, or with the blockade of colonic epithelial tight junctions, suggesting that PAR-4-AP needs to reach directly the nerve terminals in the colon. The CRD-induced spinal Fos overexpression was reduced by 43% by PAR-4-AP. The PAR-4-AP was antihyperalgesic in both hyperalgesia models and in mice with impaired lymphocytes. The PAR-4-antagonist significantly increased the TNBS, but not the WAS-induced colonic hyperalgesia. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: The antinociceptive effect of PAR-4-AP depends on its penetration to the colonic mucosa. The PAR-4 activation is endogenously involved as a feedback loop to attenuate inflammatory colonic hyperalgesia to CRD.

BACKGROUND Linaclotide is a novel, orally administered investigational drug currently in clinical development for the treatment of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation. Visceral hyperalgesia is a major pathophysiological mechanism in IBS-C. Therefore, we investigated the anti-nociceptive properties of linaclotide in rodent models of inflammatory and non-inflammatory visceral pain and determined whether these pharmacological effects are linked to the activation of guanylate cyclase C (GC-C). METHODS Orally administered linaclotide was evaluated in non-inflammatory acute partial restraint stress (PRS) and acute water avoidance stress (WAS) models in Wistar rats, and in a trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced inflammatory model in Wistar rats and GC-C null mice. KEY RESULTS In TNBS-induced colonic allodynia, linaclotide significantly decreased the number of abdominal contractions in response to colorectal distension without affecting the colonic wall elasticity change in response to distending pressures after TNBS. However, linaclotide had no effect on visceral sensitivity under basal conditions. In addition, linaclotide significantly decreased colonic hypersensitivity in the PRS and WAS models. In wild type (wt) and GC-C null mice, the instillation of TNBS induced similar hyperalgesia and allodynia. However, in post-inflammatory conditions linaclotide significantly reduced hypersensitivity only in wt mice, but not in GC-C null mice. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES These findings indicate that linaclotide has potent anti-nociceptive effects in several mechanistically different rodent models of visceral hypersensitivity and that these pharmacological properties of linaclotide are exerted through the activation of the GC-C receptor. Therefore, linaclotide may be capable of decreasing abdominal pain in patients suffering from IBS-C.

Abstract Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), frequently associated with psychological distress, is characterized by hypersensitivity to gut wall distension. Some probiotics are able to alleviate IBS symptoms and reduce visceromotor response to mechanical stimuli in animals. Moreover, we have previously shown that Lactobacillus farciminis treatment abolished the hyperalgesia to colorectal distension (CRD) induced by acute stress. The aims of the present study were to determine whether (i) stress-induced visceral hyperalgesia modifies the expression of Fos, a marker of general neuronal activation, induced by CRD, (ii) this activation can be modulated by L. farciminis treatment. Female rats were treated by L. farciminis and CRD was performed after partial restraint stress (PRS) or sham-PRS. The expression of Fos protein was measured by immunohistochemistry. After CRD or PRS, Fos expression was increased in spinal cord section (S1), nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, and in the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA). The combination of both stimuli, PRS and CRD, markedly increased this Fos overexpression in the sacral spinal cord section, PVN and MeA, but not in NTS. By contrast, a pretreatment with L. farciminis significantly reduced the number of Fos positive cells in these area. This study shows that PRS enhances Fos protein expression induced by CRD at the spinal and supraspinal levels in rats. Lactobacillus farciminis treatment inhibited this enhancing effect, suggesting that the antinociceptive effect of this probiotic strain results from a decrease of the stress-induced activation/sensitization of sensory neurons at the spinal and supraspinal level.

Thirteen volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were quantified at three sites in southwestern Mexico City from July 2000 to February 2001. High concentrations of different VOCs were found at a Gasoline refueling station (GS), a Condominium area (CA), and at the University Center for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS). The most abundant VOCs at CA and CAS were propane, n-butane, toluene, acetylene and pentane. In comparison, at GS the most abundant were toluene, pentane, propane, n-butane, and acetylene. Benzene, a known carcinogenic compound had average levels of 28, 35 and 250ppbC at CAS, CA, and GS respectively. The main contributing sources of the measured VOCs at CA and CAS were the handling and management of LP (Liquid Propane) gas, vehicle exhaust, asphalt works, and use of solvents. At GS almost all of the VOCs came from vehicle exhaust and fuel evaporation, although components of LP gas were also present. Based on the overall results possible abatement strategies are discussed.

In the present study, manganese (Mn2+), a neuromuscular blocker with pre and postsynaptic actions, was used to verify the neurotoxicity and myotoxicity induced by Crotalus durissus terrificus (Cdt) and Bothrops jararacussu (Bjssu) venoms in biventer cervicis preparations (BCp). Preparations pretreated with 0.66 and 1.6mM Mn2+ did not affect Cdt venom-induced blockage nor change KCl-induced contracture but partially reduced ACh-induced contracture. However, both Mn2+ concentrations partially hindered Bjssu venom-induced blockage after washing the preparations with Krebs solution, and only 1.6mM Mn2+ preparations significantly recovered ACh-induced contracture. The effect of Cdt venom myotoxicity on contractile responses was different from that of Bjssu venom myotoxicity. Pretreatment with 1.6mM Mn2+ partially reduced muscle damage percentage and creatine kinase (CK) activity (U/l) induced by both venoms. In conclusion, Mn2+ interfered in ACh-induced contracture of the nicotinic receptor; did not prevent Cdt venom neurotoxicity but partially reduced its myotoxicity in vitro due to the stabilizing action of this venom on the sarcolemmal membrane; and partially attenuated myotoxicity and neuromuscular blockage induced by Bjssu venom. The Mn2+ dual action (pre and postsynaptic) is useful to study snake venoms since most of them present one or both of these actions; besides, Mn2+ allowed recovering coherent interpretation of experimental versus clinical results.

BACKGROUND: Stress induced increase in colonic paracellular permeability results from epithelial cell cytoskeleton contraction and is responsible for stress induced hypersensitivity to colorectal distension (CRD). The probiotic Lactobacillus farciminis releases spontaneously nitric oxide (NO) in the colonic lumen in vivo and exerts anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed: (i) to evaluate the effects of L farciminis on stress induced hypersensitivity to CRD and increase in colonic paracellular permeability; and (ii) to ascertain whether these effects are NO mediated and related to changes in colonocyte myosin light chain phosphorylation (p-MLC). METHODS: Female Wistar rats received either 10(11) CFU/day of L farciminis or saline orally over 15 days before partial restraint stress (PRS) or sham-PRS application. Visceral sensitivity to CRD and colonic paracellular permeability was assessed after PRS or sham-PRS. Haemoglobin was used as an NO scavenger. Western blotting for MLC kinase, MLC, and p-MLC were performed in colonic mucosa from L farciminis treated and control rats after PRS or sham-PRS. RESULTS: PRS significantly increased the number of spike bursts for CRD pressures of 30-60 mm Hg as well as colonic paracellular permeability. L farciminis treatment prevented both effects, while haemoglobin reversed the protective effects of L farciminis. p-MLC expression increased significantly from 15 to 45 minutes after PRS, and L farciminis treatment prevented this increase. CONCLUSION: L farciminis treatment prevents stress induced hypersensitivity, increase in colonic paracellular permeability, and colonocyte MLC phosphorylation. This antinociceptive effect occurs via inhibition of contraction of colonic epithelial cell cytoskeleton and the subsequent tight junction opening, and may also involve direct or indirect effects of NO produced by this probiotic.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stressful life events are known to modulate the development or relapse of disease in both inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel disease patients but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Stress is known to effect mast cells, interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), and myosin light chain phosphorylation to trigger colonic epithelial barrier dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate whether acute stress induced or chemical mast cell activation impaired expression and function of epithelial tight junctions, and altered colonocyte differentiation in mice. METHODS: Colonic paracellular permeability was assessed as the in vivo lumen to blood ratio of 51Cr-EDTA in different groups of mice (controls, stressed, mast cell degranulator BrX-537A treated), pretreated or not with the mast cell stabiliser doxantrazole. Involvement of mast cells and IFN-gamma was evaluated in wild-type and IFN-gamma deficient mice. Tight junction alteration was assessed by histology, transmission electron microscopy, and real time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Colonocyte differentiation was determined by protein kinase C zeta (PKCzeta) immunofluorescence and western blotting, and alkaline phosphatase activity assay. RESULTS: Acute stress induced a three day delayed increase in colonic paracellular permeability which involved mast cell degranulation and overproduction of IFN-gamma. The colonic epithelial barrier was morphologically altered and expression of mRNA encoding tight junction proteins ZO-2 and occludin was decreased. Moreover, three days after acute stress, colonocyte differentiation was reduced, as shown by decreased expression of both PKCzeta isotype and alkaline phosphatase. CONCLUSION: These data highlight new mechanisms whereby an acute stress acts on the gastrointestinal tract by inducing alterations in colonocyte differentiation and decreased expression of mRNA encoding tight junction proteins. Thus phenotypic changes in colonocytes could pave the way for stress related intestinal disorders.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of mechanically induced duodenal distension (DD) and PD 140.548 N-methyl-D-glucamine (a specific peptide antagonist of a CCK1 receptor) premedication on mechanographical reticulo-ruminal activity, animal general behaviour, catecholamines (CA) and the blood plasma cortisol levels, as well as the clinical symptoms of visceral pain induced by DD in sheep. After 24 h fasting, 6 animals, Polish merino sheep were praeanaesthetised by i.m. injection of ketamine (20 mg x kg(-1) b.w.) and anaesthetised with i.v. infusion of pentobarbital (20 mg x kg(-1) b.w.) and a permanent stainless steel cannula (gate cannula) was inserted inside the lateral cerebral ventricle (controlled by cerebrospinal fluid efflux) 10 mm above the bregma and 5 mm laterally from the midline suture using stereotaxic method. Under the same general anaesthesia and analgesia a T-shaped silicon cannula, was inserted into the duodenum (12 cm from pylorus) and a second one was inserted into the dorsal sac of the rumen. During 7 consecutive days after surgery each animal was treated i.m. with procaine penicillin (300000 I.U..kg(-1) b.w.), dihydrostreptomycine (DHS, 10 microg x kg(-1) b.w.), prednisolone acetate 1.2 mg x kg(-1) b.w.) together and i.m. injection of ketamine (20 mg x kg(-1) b.w.), separetely. The influence of PD 140.548 N-methyl-D-glucamine on the unfavourable effects of duodenal distension using a 10 cm long balloon filled with 40 and 80 ml (DD40 and DD80) water at animal body temperature was investigated in this study. Five minutes DD40 and DD80 caused an immediate and compete inhibition of the reticulo-ruminal frequency, a significant increase in plasma CA and cortisol levels, an increase in the heart rate, hyperventilation and other symptoms of pain, proportionally to the degree of intestinal distension. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of PD 140.548 alone at a dose of 0.25, 0.5, 1 or 2 mg in toto did not significantly change the reticulo-ruminal motility, CA and cortisol concentrations, but 10 min after the i.c.v. infusion (or 10 min before DD) at a dose 1 and 2 mg in toto , it completely blocked the increase of blood plasma cortisol, epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) concentrations for 20 min. In the some time it prevented the reticulo-ruminal atony provocked by DD. It is concluded that PD 140.548 N-methyl-D-glucamine--an antagonist of the central CCK1 receptor can be an effective analgesic agent in duodenal pain. This action is due to the inhibition of peripheral CCK1 type receptor in the central descending nerve pathway, facilitating pain transmission in sheep perhaps in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

The respiratory system is directly exposed to low levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), present as a contaminant on airborne particles. In cystic fibrosis, the prevailing data identify structural changes of the airway epithelium, as well as tight junction dilatation. This study was aimed at determining the contribution of myosin light chain kinase to maintaining airway epithelium barrier integrity in the lung inflammatory response to LPS in rats. The effects of the selective myosin light chain kinase inhibitor, 5-iodonaphthalene-1-sulphonyl-homopiperazine (ML-7), were evaluated: 1) on pulmonary inflammation and airway epithelium barrier permeability alterations induced by intra-tracheal LPS from Pseudomonas aeruginosa; and 2) on levels of the phosphorylated form of the myosin light chain, which is increased in a human airway epithelial cell line (NCI-H292) and tracheal tissue after LPS exposure. The results show that LPS increased airway epithelium barrier paracellular permeability and lung inflammation, and that pre-treatment with ML-7 inhibited both effects. This effect of ML-7 was associated with the inhibition of phosphorylated myosin light chain in both NCI-H292 cells and tracheal tissue. The data, obtained using in vivo and in vitro approaches, demonstrate a key role for myosin light chain kinase in lung inflammation, and suggest that myosin light chain kinase could be a potential target for novel drugs intended for relief of lung injury.

Glass structure and fluorine motion dynamics are investigated in lead-cadmium fluorgermanate glasses by means of differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering, x-ray absorption (EXAFS), electrical conductivity (EC), and (19)F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Glasses with composition 60PbGeO(3)-xPbF(2)-yCdF(2) (in mol %), with x+y=40 and x=10, 20, 30, 40, are studied. Addition of metal fluorides to the base PbGeO(3) glass leads to a decrease of the glass transition temperature (T(g)) and to an enhancement of the ionic conductivity properties. Raman and EXAFS data analysis suggest that metagermanate chains form the basic structural feature of these glasses. The NMR study leads to the conclusion that the F-F distances are similar to those found in pure crystalline phases. Experimental results suggest the existence of a heterogeneous glass structure at the molecular scale, which can be described by fluorine rich regions permeating the metagermanate chains. The temperature dependence of the NMR line shapes and relaxation times exhibits the qualitative and quantitative features associated with the high fluorine mobility in these systems.

Cytokines are involved in fever and other symptoms of the acute phase response induced by endotoxins. The aim of this work was to study the involvement of central tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in the changes induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on gastrointestinal (GI) motility in sheep. Body temperature and myoelectric activity of the antrum, duodenum and jejunum was recorded continuously. Intravenous (i.v.) administration of LPS (0.1 micro g kg-1)-induced hyperthermia, decreased gastrointestinal myoelectric activity and increased the frequency of the migrating motor complex (MMC). These effects started 40-50 min after LPS and lasted for 6-7 h. TNF-alpha (50 and 100 ng kg-1) mimicked these effects when injected intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) but not i.v. Pretreatment with soluble recombinant TNF receptor (TNFR:Fc, 10 micro g kg-1, i.c.v.) abolished the TNF-induced actions and reduced those evoked by LPS. Furthermore, the effects induced by either LPS or TNF were suppressed by prior i.c.v. injection of indomethacin (100 micro g kg-1). In contrast, the i.v. injections of TNFR:Fc or indomethacin were ineffective. Our data suggest that LPS disturbs GI motility in sheep through a central pathway that involves TNF-alpha and prostaglandins sequentially.
