As a chemotherapy agent, cisplatin (DDP) is often associated with drug resistance and gastrointestinal toxicity, factors that severely limit therapeutic efficacy in patients with ovarian cancer (OC). Naringin has been shown to increase sensitivity to cisplatin, but whether the intestinal microbiota is associated with this effect has not been reported so far. In this study, we applied a humanized mouse model for the first time to evaluate the reversal of cisplatin resistance by naringin, as well as naringin combined with the microbiota in ovarian cancer. The results showed that naringin combined with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis NCU-01 had an inhibitory effect on the tumor, significantly reducing tumor size (p<0.05), as well as the concentrations of serum tumor markers CA125 and HE4, increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides, inhibit Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)-induced intestinal inflammation and increase the expression of intestinal permeability-associated proteins ZO-1 (p<0.001) and occludin (p<0.01). In conclusion, the above data demonstrate how naringin combined with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis NCU-01 reverses cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer by modulating the intestinal microbiota, inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and modulating the p38MAPK signaling pathway.

Background: This investigation evaluates the utility and benefits of integrating interprofessional education (IPE) into laparoscopic training, aiming to enrich medical education and skill acquisition methodologies. Methods: The study randomly allocated 36 participants of a 2023 laparoscopic training course into experimental and control groups, each comprising 18 individuals. The control group underwent traditional theory and practical training, whereas the experimental group additionally engaged in interdisciplinary instruction with nursing educators and participated in simulated laparoscopic surgery exercises. The effectiveness of this interdisciplinary approach was assessed by comparing laparoscopic theory and simulation performance, Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) scores in animal-based training, and course satisfaction between the groups. Moreover, the impact on interdisciplinary collaborative competencies was measured through pre- and post-training self-evaluations using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) in the experimental group. Results: The experimental group demonstrated superior performance in laparoscopic theory and simulation, as well as higher OSATS scores, compared with the control group. Satisfaction ratings regarding the skills practice mode, effects, and instructional quality were also significantly better in the experimental group (P < .05, P < .01). Furthermore, participants in the experimental group reported significant pre-to-post training enhancements in interprofessional communication, team collaboration, role perception, conflict management, and learning and feedback marked by statistically significant differences (P < .05, P < .01). Conclusion: The introduction of an IPE framework significantly boosts laparoscopic training efficiency and promotes team collaboration awareness. This model effectively bridges gaps between disciplines, illustrating substantial applicative value and expansion potential within medical education and skill training arenas.

Background: A high rate of glomerulosclerosis serves as an important signal of poor response to treatment and a high risk of disease progression or adverse prognosis in transplanted kidneys. We hypothesized that contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) could serve as a novel imaging biomarker in the early prediction of glomerulosclerosis rate by evaluating renal allograft microcirculation. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 143 transplanted kidney recipients with confirmed pathology, including 100 in the training group and 43 in the validation group. All patients underwent conventional ultrasound (CUS) and CEUS examinations. The patients were divided into two groups: those with >50% glomerulosclerosis and those with ≤50% glomerulosclerosis. The nomograms derived from independent predictors identified by multivariate logistic analysis were assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, 1,000 bootstrap resamples, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: The patients with >50% glomerulosclerosis and those with ≤50% glomerulosclerosis showed statistically significant differences in CEUS parameters, including in peak intensity (PI) (25 vs. 30; P<0.001), absolute time to peak (ATTP) (10 vs. 9; P=0.004), and time to peak (TTP) (22 vs. 19.5; P=0.026). Multivariate analysis revealed that PI [odds ratio (OR) =0.852; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.737-0.986], peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the interlobar artery (OR =0.850; 95% CI: 0.758-0.954), cortical echogenicity (OR =38.429; 95% CI: 3.695-399.641), and time since transplantation (OR =1.017; 95% CI: 1.006-1.028) were independent predictors of whether the glomerulosclerosis rate was >50% and were incorporated into the construction of a nomogram. The area under the curve (AUC) of the nomogram in the training and validation groups was 0.914 (95% CI: 0.840-0.960) and 0.909 (95% CI: 0.781-0.975), respectively, with a bootstrap resampling AUC of 0.877. The calibration curve and DCA confirmed the diagnostic performance of the nomogram model. Conclusions: The nomogram, which combined CUS, CEUS, and clinical indicators, exhibited notable predictive efficacy for the glomerulosclerosis rate in transplanted kidneys, thereby demonstrating the potential to improve clinical decision-making.

The gastrointestinal tract is essential for food digestion, nutrient absorption, waste elimination, and microbial defense. Single-cell transcriptome profiling of the intestinal tract has greatly enriched our understanding of cellular diversity, functional heterogeneity, and their importance in intestinal tract development and disease. Although such profiling has been extensively conducted in humans and mice, the single-cell gene expression landscape of the pig cecum remains unexplored. Here, single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on 45 572 cells obtained from seven cecal samples in pigs at four different developmental stages (days (D) 30, 42, 150, and 730). Analysis revealed 12 major cell types and 38 subtypes, as well as their distinctive genes, transcription factors, and regulons, many of which were conserved in humans. An increase in the relative proportions of CD8 + T and Granzyme A (low expression) natural killer T cells (GZMA low NKT) cells and a decrease in the relative proportions of epithelial stem cells, Tregs, RHEX + T cells, and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) were noted across the developmental stages. Moreover, the post-weaning period exhibited an up-regulation in mitochondrial genes, COX2 and ND2, as well as genes involved in immune activation in multiple cell types. Cell-cell crosstalk analysis indicated that IBP6 + fibroblasts were the main signal senders at D30, whereas IBP6 - fibroblasts assumed this role at the other stages. NKT cells established interactions with epithelial cells and IBP6 + fibroblasts in the D730 cecum through mediation of GZMA-F2RL1/F2RL2 pairs. This study provides valuable insights into cellular heterogeneity and function in the pig cecum at different development stages.

Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that uses medicinal plants to extract nanoparticles for conventional applications. In the present investigation, the medical plant Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) has used in the synthesis of cobalt (Co) nanoparticles in a cost-effective, feasible process. The efficiency of nanoparticles in removing methyl orange dye was evaluated by analyzing their applications in wastewater treatment. An analysis of the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties of Tulsi-mediated Co nanoparticles was conducted to examine their medical application. Morphological analysis of Co nanoparticles showed that the synthesized nanoparticles were in crystal shape with a mean particle size of 110 nm. A batch adsorption study has shown that incubation periods of 5 h, pH 2, temperatures of 70 °C, and adsorbent dosage of 125 µg/mL are optimal for removing methyl orange dye from wastewater. To examine the anti-inflammatory properties of Tulsi-mediated Co nanoparticles, protein denaturation and nitric oxide scavenging assays were performed. The maximum anti-inflammatory response was recorded at a concentration of 250 µg/mL of Co nanoparticles. MTT assays against MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells were used to evaluate the anti-cancer properties of Co nanoparticles. This study investigates the economical extraction of Co nanoparticles from tulsi and its potential use in wastewater purification and biomedical applications.

Fecal samples from participants aged 60-80 were collected and sequenced by a high-throughput second-generation sequencer to explore the structural composition of gut microbiota in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Comparison of gut microbiota between patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and healthy controls, α diversity and ß diversity were statistically different. At the genus level, compared with the normal group, the abundance of A Blautia, Fusicatenibacter, Anaerostipes, Lachnospiraceae_ND3007_group, CAG-56, Eggerthella, Lachnospiraceae_FCS020_group and Olsenella were decreased significantly in the LC group. In contrast, the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella, Fusobacterium, Megasphaera, Veillonella, Tyzzerella_4, Prevotella_2 and Cronobacter increased significantly. The KEGG and COG pathway analyses showed that the dysbiosis of gut bacteria in primary liver carcinoma is associated with several pathways, including amino acid metabolism, replication and repair, nucleotide metabolism, cell motility, cell growth and death, and transcription. Age is negatively associated with the abundance of Bifidobacterium. Lachnospiraceae_ ND3007_ group, [Eubacterium]_hallii_group, Blautia, Fuscatenibacter and Anaerostipes are negatively correlated with ALT, AST and GGT levels (p < 0.05), respectively. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is positively associated with the abundance of Erysipelatoclostridium, Magasphaera, Prevotella 2, Escherichia-Shigella, Streptococcus and [Eubacterium]_eligens_group (p < 0.05), respectively. A random forest model showed that the genera Eggerthella, Anaerostipes, and Lachnospiraceae_ ND3007_ group demonstrated the best predictive capacity. The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve of Eggerthella, Anaerostipes and Lachnospiraceae_ ND3007_ group are 0.791, 0.766 and 0.730, respectively. These data are derived from the first known gut microbiome study in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Potentially, specific microbiota can be used as a characteristic index for screening, diagnosis, and prognosis of gut microbiota changes in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and even as a therapeutic clinical target.

Multilayered materials are widely studied due to their special structures and great properties, such as their mechanical ones. In this paper a novel and effective technique, a quadruple-layering approach, was used to fabricate multilayered materials. This approach increases the number of layers rapidly via simple operations. Materials with 4, 16, and 64 layers with alternating layers of polypropylene and nanocomposites were fabricated using this approach, and their film morphology and mechanical properties were studied. The influence of the number of layers on the mechanical properties of the materials and the relationship between the mechanical properties of each material were investigated. The results illustrated that the tensile modulus and strength were enhanced and elongation at the break increased when the layer numbers of the multilayered materials increased. However, this approach has a defect in that as the layer number increases, the layer thickness was not uniform, thus restricting the improvement of properties. This may need to be further studied in future work.

The gut microbiota has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Recent studies suggest that the gut microbiota is also closely associated with bone metabolism. However, given the high diversity of the gut microbiota, the effects of different taxa and compositions on bone are poorly understood. Previous studies demonstrated that the mechanisms underlying the effects of the gut microbiota on bone mainly include its modulation of nutrient absorption, intestinal permeability, metabolites (such as short-chain amino acids), immune responses, and hormones or neurotransmitters (such as 5-hydroxytryptamine). Several studies found that external interventions, such as dietary changes, improved bone health and altered the composition of the gut microbiota. This review summarises the beneficial gut bacteria and explores how dietary, natural, and physical factors alter the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota to improve bone health, thereby providing potential new insight into the prevention of osteoporosis.

Thermal and flame-retardant properties of traditional composites have limitations that are not satisfied for the various applications. Multilayered materials have great potential to improve material properties. The present paper focused on designing new multilayering approach to fabricate flame retardant multilayered materials with a very basic instrument and several simple steps. Montmorillonite nanoparticles filled maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene composites were prepared by the melt-blending method, and the multilayered composites with polypropylene alternating multilayers were fabricated by the quadruple-layering approach. The multilayer structure was characterized by the scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer. The influence of layer structure on the thermal stability, thermal conductivity and flame-retardant properties was investigated by the comparison with the conventional composites. Multilayered composites showed enhanced flame-retardant properties with lower peak heat release rate and better char formation compared to conventional composites with the same mass fraction of montmorillonite. Multilayered composites had higher mass fraction of montmorillonite in filled layers and no fillers in other layers, which caused the unequal distribution of montmorillonite, resulting in changes of thermal and flame-retardant properties of the materials especially in the perpendicular direction to the film surface. This study demonstrates a unique multilayering approach that has potential to be used in variety applications such as food and medical packaging.

Nanocellulose based gas barrier materials have become an increasingly important subject, since it is a widespread environmentally friendly natural polymer. Previous studies have shown that super-high gas barrier can be achieved with pure and hierarchical nanocellulose films fabricated through simple suspension or layer-by-layer technique either by itself or incorporating with other polymers or nanoparticles. Improved gas barrier properties were observed for nanocellulose-reinforced composites, where nanocellulose partially impermeable nanoparticles decreased gas permeability effectively. However, for nanocellulose-based materials, the higher gas barrier performance is jeopardized by water absorption and shape deformation under high humidity conditions which is a challenge for maintaining properties in material applications. Thus, numerous investigations have been done to solve the problem of water absorption in nanocellulose-based materials. In this literature review, gas barrier properties of pure, layer-by-layer and composite nanocellulose films are investigated. The possible theoretical gas barrier mechanisms are described, and the prospects for nanocellulose-based materials are discussed.

Formaldehyde emission is an intrinsic property derived from aldehyde-based resin that is used in wood-based composites. To reduce formaldehyde emission from plywood, the composite catalyst of tourmaline-titanium dioxide (T-TiO2) was fabricated by the sol-gel method. Furthermore, the impregnated paper loaded with the T-TiO2 composite catalyst was used to decorate the surface of 5-layer poplar plywood. The physicochemical structure, photocatalytic activity of T-TiO2 composite catalyst and its mechanism of degrading gaseous formaldehyde and generating air negative ions were assessed. The results discovered that the synergistic influence of the tourmaline and TiO2 anatase nanocrystals achieved good photodegradation of the gaseous formaldehyde. The neat T(20%)-TiO2 catalyst offered a higher formaldehyde removal efficiency (92.2%) than other catalysts, possessing 800 ions/cm3 of air negative ions concentration after 10-h visible light irradiation. The poplar plywood with a load of 3% T(20%)-TiO2 catalyst can stably induce the degradation formaldehyde into air negative ions with a concentration of 1200 ions/cm3 in visible light. The impregnation process of paper was feasible to be industrialized and the decorated wood-based composites can be widely applied in the furniture industry.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to identify the associations between the lymphocytes (LYM) absolute count on admission and clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 224 COVID-19 patients who were admitted to General Hospital of Central Theater Command of the PLA from January 22 to April 4, 2020, were consecutively included. These patients were divided into the lymphopenia group and the nonlymphopenia group according to whether the LYM count on admission was below the normal range. RESULTS: During hospitalization, patients in the lymphopenia group have a much higher all-cause mortality (14.5% vs 0.0%; P < .001) and an evidently longer length of hospital stay (24.0 vs 17.5 days; P < .001) than patients in the nonlymphopenia group. The correlation analysis results indicated that the LYM count was negatively correlated with the values of NEU (R = -.2886, P < .001), PT (R = -.2312, P < .001), FIB (R = -.2954, P < .001), D-D (R = -.3554, P < .001), CRP (R = -.4899, P < .001), IL-6 (R = -.5459, P < .001), AST (R = -.2044, P < .01), Cr (R = -.1350, P < .05), CPK (R = -.2119, P < .01), CK-Mb (R = -.1760, P < .01), and LDH (R = -.4330, P < .001), and was positively correlated with the count of PLT (R = .2679, P < .001). In addition, LYM as a continuous variable was associated with 97% decreased risk of in-hospital mortality in the fully adjusted models (OR = 0.03, 95%CI, 0.00-0.37, P < .001). DISCUSSION: LYM screening on admission is a critical predictor for assessment of disease severity and clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19, and lymphopenia substantially correlates with poor clinical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring of laboratory indicators is important for predicting changes in disease severity and clinical outcomes. We aimed to identify the critical predictors that can effectively assess the disease conditions of patients with COVID-19 by analyzing the clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: All consecutive patients (n = 294) with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to the General Hospital of Central Theater Command of the PLA from February 6 to February 21, 2020, were enrolled. These patients were divided into the severe group and the nonsevere group according to disease severity during hospitalization. RESULTS: The median neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) value of the severe patients was dramatically higher than that of the nonsevere patients (10.4 vs 2.6; P < .001). The NLR value equal to 5 was a boundary value worthy of reference, because more than 80% severe patients had an NLR value greater than 5 and over 80% nonsevere patients had an NLR value less than 5. The NLR value of these COVID-19 patients was positively and respectively correlated with the values of C-reactive protein (R = .5921, P < .001), lactate dehydrogenase (R = .4509, P < .001), procalcitonin (R = .5504, P < .001), fibrinogen (R = .4710, P < .001), and D-dimers (R = .4425, P < .001). However, the NLR value was merely and positively correlated with the interleukin-6 value (R = .3594, P < .05), but had no correlations with the values of interleukin-10, interleukin-4, interleukin-17, interferon-γ, and tumor necrosis factor-α (P > .05). DISCUSSION: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is a critical predictor for assessment of disease severity in patients with COVID-19, and it has a close relation with the laboratory indicators related to disease conditions.

BACKGROUND: The term "plasmonic" describes the relationship between electromagnetic fields and metallic nanostructures. Plasmon-based sensors have been used innovatively to accomplish different biomedical tasks, including detection of cancer. Plasmonic sensors also have been used in biochip applications and biosensors and have the potential to be implemented as implantable point-of-care devices. Many devices and methods discussed in the literature are based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR). However, the mathematical background can be overwhelming for researchers at times. OBJECTIVE: This review article discusses the theory of SPR, simplifying the underlying physics and bypassing many equations of SPR and LSPR. Moreover, we introduce and discuss the hybrid whispering gallery mode (WGM) sensing theory and its applications. METHODS: A literature search in ScienceDirect was performed using keywords such as "surface plasmon resonance," "localized plasmon resonance," and "whispering gallery mode/plasmonic." The search results retrieved many articles, among which we selected only those that presented a simple explanation of the SPR phenomena with prominent biomedical examples. RESULTS: SPR, LSPR, tilted fiber Bragg grating, and hybrid WGM phenomena were explained and examples on biosensing applications were provided. CONCLUSIONS: This minireview presents an overview of biosensor applications in the field of biomedicine and is intended for researchers interested in starting to work in this field. The review presents the fundamental notions of plasmonic sensors and hybrid WGM sensors, thereby allowing one to get familiar with the terminology and underlying complex formulations of linear and nonlinear optics.

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer susceptibility gene 1/2 (BRCA1/2) is the most important susceptibility gene associated with hereditary ovarian cancer (HOC). We aimed to screen BRAC1 and BRAC2 gene mutations in a member of a hereditary ovarian cancer family in China, and to analyze the structure and function of the mutant protein. METHODS: A typical HOC family was selected. Blood samples and pathological tissue samples were taken from the female members of the family. Blood samples from two patients with sporadic ovaries of the same pathological type were taken as a control group. After RNA extraction, PCR amplification was applied and the PCR products were directly sequenced and aligned, prediction and analysis of protein structure and molecular conformation that may be caused by BRCA1/2 mutation. RESULTS: The whole gene analysis of BRCA1 and BRCA2 in ovarian cancer patients in the family showed that there were 8 mutations in BRCA1 whole gene sequencing, including 3 nonsense mutations (2314C>T, 2543T>C, 4540T>C); two mutations have been recorded, which are associated with cervical cancer (2844C>T) and endometriosis (3345A>G); three newly discovered mutations (3780A>G, 5069A>G, 3326A>T). Among them, 3780A>G and 5069A>G caused amino acid changes, while 3326A>T mutation caused Arg mutation to stop codon. A total of 7 mutations were detected in BRCA2 whole-genome sequencing, including 5 non-significant mutations (3623A>G, 4034T>C, 4790A>G, 6740G>C, 7469A>G); one no-record mutation (1716T>A), and 1 recorded mutation (1342A>C), which was associated with breast cancer and ovarian cancer. BRCA1 (3326A>T) and BRCA2 (1342A>C) mutations were co-existing in patients (II1, II3, and II5) identified as serous adenocarcinoma grade II. Two cases of ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma with no history of family tumors were normalized for BRCA1/2 gene sequencing. In the gene detection of III generation female, four females with BRCA2 (1342A>C) mutation were found, and one of them also carried the BRCA1 (3326A>T) mutation, who can be considered a high-risk group of HOC in this family. Online protein structure predictions revealed that BRCA1 (3326A>T) mutations mutated AGA at this site to TGA resulting in a translated Arg (arginine) mutation as a stop codon, while BRCA2 (1342A>C) mutated AAT at this site to CAT resulting in a translated Asn mutation to His. CONCLUSION: The BRCA1 (3326A>T) and BRCA2 (1342A>C) were detected in the HOC family, which may be the susceptibility gene of the family's HOC. The BRCA1/2 gene screening may be possible to obtain high-risk populations in this family.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the antitumor activities of naringin in ovarian cancer, and to assess the underlying mechanisms. Ovarian tumor cells were implanted into nude mice to produce ovarian tumors in vivo. The mice were divided into six groups: Control, low dose naringin [0.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.)], middle dose naringin (1 mg/kg, i.p.), high dose naringin (2 mg/kg, i.p.), positive control (cisplatin, 2 mg/kg, i.p.) and a combination of cisplatin and naringin (both 2 mg/kg). Following administration of naringin and/or cisplatin, the tumor size and weight were measured. Apoptosis of tumor cells was detected using a terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay. Apoptosis-associated gene expression was detected using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. In the range of 0.5-2 mg/kg, naringin dose-dependently inhibited tumor growth, as demonstrated by a decrease in tumor size and weight. Naringin promoted apoptosis of the ovarian tumor cells. Additionally, naringin reduced the expression of B-cell lymphoma (Bcl)-2, Bcl-extra large (Bcl-xL), cyclin D1, c-Myc and survivin, while it increased the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-7. The data demonstrated that naringin inhibited ovarian tumor growth in vivo. Its mechanisms may be associated with caspase-7-, caspase-3-, Bcl-2- and Bcl-xL-mediated apoptosis. Nevertheless, the clinical application of naringin in the treatment of ovarian cancer requires further study.

Aberrant expression of ARE-binding proteins (ARE-BPs) plays an important role in several diseases, including cancer. Both tristetraprolin (TTP) and human antigen R (HuR) are important ARE-BPs and always play opposite roles in regulating target mRNAs. Our previous work has demonstrated that TTP expression is decreased in gastric cancer (GC). In this study, we reported that HuR was elevated in GC cell lines and gastric cancer patients and that decreased TTP expression partly contributed to the elevated HuR levels by regulating its mRNA turnover. We also observed that dysregulation of TTP and HuR elevated the high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) expression in different ways. HuR promoted HMGB1 expression at translational level, while TTP regulated HMGB1 mRNA turnover by destabilizing its mRNA. Increased HuR promoted cancer cell proliferation and the metastasis potential partly by HMGB1. Using immunohistochemistry, we observed that both positive cytoplasmic and high-expression of nuclear HuR were associated with poor pathologic features and survival of GC patients. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that dysregulation of the TTP and HuR plays an important role in GC. Moreover, high HuR nuclear expression or aberrant cytoplasmic distribution may serve as a predictor of poor survival.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of action by which naringin reverses the resistance of ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting assays were used to detect the effects of different concentrations of naringin on the expressions of nuclear factor (NF)-κB and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the SKOV3/CDDP cell line. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting NF-κB was designed and synthesized to silence NF-κB, and recombinant plasmid vectors overexpressing NF-κB were constructed to transfect cells. RT-qPCR and western blotting assays were subsequently performed to detect the effects of NF-κB on the expression of P-gp at the mRNA and protein levels. Naringin was added to the NF-κB-overexpressing SKOV3/CDDP cells and cultured for 48 h, followed by the detection of the expression of P-gp. RT-PCR and western blotting results demonstrated that the gene and protein expressions of NF-κB and P-gp were significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner by naringin treatment (P<0.05). In cells overexpressing NF-κB, P-gp expression was significantly elevated (P<0.05), and the expression of P-gp was significantly decreased when NF-κB was silenced (P<0.05). Treatment with naringin was able to significantly ameliorate the NF-κB-induced overexpression of P-gp (P<0.05). These results indicate that naringin is able to inhibit the expression of NF-κB and P-gp in SKOV3/CDDP cells. Such an inhibitory effect may increase gradually with concentration, and is associated with blockade of the NF-κB signaling pathway. This pathway may represent one of the mechanisms of action by which Naringin reverses resistance to platinum-based agents in ovarian cancer cells.

The soy protein isolate (SPI), sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and pentaerythritol glycidyl ether (PEGE) were used to make biodegradable films in this study. Unlike the usual method that adding sodium hydroxide (NaOH) during the SPI-based film casting, SDBS was used as a surfactant playing the similar role as NaOH. Since NaOH is a chemical with corrosiveness and toxicity, the replacing of NaOH by SDBS might reduce the hazard threat during the utilization of SPI-based films in food packing application. Furthermore, the presentation of SDBS helped dispersing the hydrophobic PEGE into the hydrophilic SPI. PEGE is a crosslinking agent with multiple reactive epoxy groups. The chemical structures and micro morphologies of the fabricated films were investigated by means of FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The thermal stabilities of the films were examined by means of the thermo-gravimetric analysis. After the chemical crosslinking, the ultimate tensile strength of the film was significantly increased, meanwhile, the water absorption was dramatically decreased. It was concluded that the SPI-based film containing 4% PEGE achieved the optimal performance.

BACKGROUND: Mammary hyperplasia is one of the most common benign breast disorders. Although traditional Chinese medicine has a vast experience in the treatment of mammary hyperplasia, it is not accepted widely due to its unclear mechanism. METHODS AND MATERIALS: To address the mechanism, we developed a mouse model of mammary hyperplasia. We gave mice estradiol valerate tablets and progesterone capsules sequentially for one month by intragastric administration. RESULTS: Mice treated by this method had a series of pathological changes which are similar to those detected in women with mammary hyperplasia, including ectopic level of estradiol and progesterone in serum, hyperplasia of mammary glands and increased expression of ERα and PR. CONCLUSION: This model will facilitate the mechanical study of traditional medicine on mammary hyperplasia.
