BACKGROUND: Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is a diamide insecticide with high efficacy against many pest insects, including the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon. Agrotis ipsilon is a serious pest causing significant yield losses in crops. Glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) belong to a family of metabolic enzymes that can detoxify a wide range of pesticides. However, little is known about the functions of GSTs in CAP tolerance in A. ipsilon. RESULTS: A cDNA sequence (designated AiGSTu1) encoding an unclassified GST was identified from A. ipsilon. AiGSTu1 is highly expressed during the 3rd -instar larval and the pupal stages. Most of the mRNA transcripts were found in larval Malpighian tubules. Exposure to CAP strongly enhanced AiGSTu1 expression, GST activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) and malondialdehyde levels in larvae. H2 O2 treatment upregulated the transcription level of AiGSTu1, suggesting that CAP-induced oxidative stress may activate AiGSTu1 expression. The activity of recombinant AiGSTu1 was inhibited by CAP in a dose-dependent manner. Metabolism assay results demonstrated that AiGSTu1 is capable of depleting CAP. Overexpression of AiGSTu1 enhanced the tolerance of Escherichia coli cells to H2 O2 and the oxidative stress inducer, cumene hydroperoxide. Silencing of AiGSTu1 by RNA interference increased the susceptibility of A. ipsilon larvae to CAP. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the potential role of AiGSTu1 in CAP detoxification and will improve our understanding of CAP tolerance in A. ipsilon. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

To study the sources and potential risks of heavy metals in soils of characteristic agricultural product producing areas is of great significance for the scientific management and safe utilization of soil and crop resources. The contents of heavy metals As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the 254 surface soil samples collected from the Heze oil peony planting area were determined. The content characteristics and correlation of heavy metals were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods. The sources of heavy metals in topsoil were analyzed using Igeo, PMF, and PCA/APCS. The ecological risks of the eight heavy metals were assessed through the potential ecological risk index (PERI). The results showed that the average contents of seven heavy metals in the soil were basically consistent with the background values of soil elements in Heze City, except that the average value of Cd was 1.44 times higher than the background value in Heze City. Correlation analysis and cluster analysis revealed that Pb, Hg, and Cd elements in the soil were greatly affected by human activities in the later period. The sources of eight heavy metals in the study area were natural sources, agricultural fertilizer sources, industrial coal sources, and domestic transportation sources, with the contribution rates of 81.31%, 15.45%, 2.74%, and 0.50%, respectively; 84.25% of the sites in the study area were at slight ecological risk, whereas the moderate risk and strong risk sites accounted for 14.96% and 0.79%, respectively. Among them, Cd and Hg were the dominant elements of ecological risk in the study area.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has a heavy impact on the mental health of elderly surgical patients worldwide. In particular, the elderly patients faced considerable psychological stress due to various environmental and medical factors during the outbreak. This study aims to examine changes in mental health trends among non-cardiac surgical patients aged 65 and above in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This multi-center, convenient sampling, longitudinal observational study was conducted from April 1, 2020 to April 30, 2022. Primary outcome was the prevalence of postoperative depression. Secondary outcome was the prevalence of postoperative anxiety. Follow-up was conducted separately at 7 days and 30 days after surgery. Depression symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) scale. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale, with scores of ≥5 defining positive depression or anxiety symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate risk factors of mental health status in more elderly patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. RESULTS: A total of 4639 patients were included, of whom 2279 (46.0 %) were male, 752 (15.2 %) were over the age of 75, and 4346 (93.7 %) were married. The monthly prevalence trends demonstrated that compared to the outbreak period, a significant reduction in the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in elderly patients who underwent surgery during the post-pandemic period. In post-pandemic period, a statistically significant decrease in the prevalence of all severity depression and anxiety patients was noted at the 7-day follow-up, but no significant decrease was observed for severe depression and anxiety in the 30-day follow-up. In COVID-19 low-risk area, a significant overall decrease in prevalence of mental health was observed during the post-pandemic period compared to the outbreak period, including 7-day depression, 7-day anxiety, 30-day depression, and 30-day anxiety (all with P < 0.001). Female and patients with ≥2 comorbidities appeared to be more susceptible to postoperative depression and anxiety during the pandemic. LIMITATION: The absence of data from the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak. CONCLUSIONS: This study analyzed the prevalence of depression and anxiety in elderly non-cardiac patients during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on dimensions such as severity, risk-areas, gender, and comorbidity. Our findings revealed a significant decrease in the prevalence of depression and anxiety in elderly surgery patients during the post-pandemic period.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive value of the 5-factor modified frailty index (mFI-5) for postoperative mortality, delirium and pneumonia in patients over 65 years of age undergoing elective lung cancer surgery. METHODS: Data were collected from a single-center retrospective cohort study conducted in a general tertiary hospital from January 2017 to August 2019. In total, the study included 1372 elderly patients aged over 65 who underwent elective lung cancer surgery. They were divided into frail group (mFI-5, 2-5), prefrail group (mFI-5, 1) and robust group (mFI-5, 0) on the basis of mFI-5 classification. The primary outcome was postoperative 1-year all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were postoperative pneumonia and postoperative delirium. RESULTS: Frailty group had the highest incidence of postoperative delirium (frailty 31.2% versus prefrailty 1.6% versus robust 1.5%, p < 0.001), postoperative pneumonia (frailty 23.5% versus prefrailty 7.2% versus robust 7.7%, p < 0.001), and postoperative 1-year mortality (frailty 7.0% versus prefrailty 2.2% versus robust 1.9%. p < 0.001). Frail patients have significantly longer length of hospitalization than those in the robust group and prefrail patients (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed a clear link between frailty and increased risk of postoperative delirium (aOR 2.775, 95% CI 1.776-5.417, p < 0.001), postoperative pneumonia (aOR 3.291, 95% CI 2.169-4.993, p < 0.001) and postoperative 1-year mortality (aOR 3.364, 95% CI, 1.516-7.464, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: mFI-5 has potential clinical utility in predicting postoperative death, delirium and pneumonia incidence in elderly patients undergoing radical lung cancer surgery. Frailty screening of patients (mFI-5) may provide benefits in risk stratification, targeted intervention efforts, and assist physicians in clinical decision-making.

Camellia oil extracted from Camellia seeds is rich in unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) and secondary metabolites beneficial to human health. However, no oil-tea tree genome has yet been published, which is a major obstacle to investigating the heredity improvement of oil-tea trees. Here, using both Illumina and PicBio sequencing technologies, we present the first chromosome-level genome sequence of the oil-tea tree species Camellia chekiangoleosa Hu. (CCH). The assembled genome consists of 15 pseudochromosomes with a genome size of 2.73 Gb and a scaffold N50 of 185.30 Mb. At least 2.16 Gb of the genome assembly consists of repetitive sequences, and the rest involves a high-confidence set of 64 608 protein-coding gene models. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that the CCH genome underwent a whole-genome duplication (WGD) event shared across the Camellia genus at ~57.48 MYA and a γ-WGT event shared across all core eudicot plants at ~120 MYA. Gene family clustering revealed that the genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis have undergone rapid expansion. Furthermore, we determined the expression patterns of oleic acid accumulation- and terpenoid biosynthesis-associated genes in six tissues. We found that these genes tend to be highly expressed in leaves, pericarp tissues, roots, and seeds. The first chromosome-level genome of oil-tea trees will provide valuable resources for determining Camellia evolution and utilizing the germplasm of this taxon.

By studying the expression in patients and cell modeling in vitro, antimicrobial peptides for Klebsiella were screened. Killing curve and membrane permeability experiments are used to study the antibacterial effect of antimicrobial peptides in vitro. Cytotoxicity-related indicators including lipopolysaccharide (LPS), capsule polysaccharide (CPS), and outer membrane protein expression were measured. Intranasal inoculation of pneumoconiosis was used to construct a mouse infection model, and the survival rate and cytokine expression level were tested. Human neutrophil peptide 1 (HNP-1) showed a significant antibacterial effect, which improved the permeability of the outer membrane of K. pneumoniae. Moreover, HNP-1 decreased LPS, CPS content, and outer membrane proteins. K. pneumoniae infection decreased antimicrobial peptide, oxidative stress, and autophagy-related genes, while HNP-1 increased these genes. After coculture with macrophages, the endocytosis of macrophages is enhanced and the bacterial load is greater in the K. pneumoniae + peptide group. Besides, higher levels of pp38 and pp65 in the K. pneumoniae + peptide group. HNP-1 rescued the cytotoxicity induced by K. pneumoniae. The survival rate is significantly improved after K. pneumoniae is treated by HNP-1. All cytokines in the peptide group were significantly higher. HNP-1 promotes immune sterilization by reducing the virulence of multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae and increasing the ability of macrophages.

The quadrilateral anterior cervical plate (ACP) is used extensively in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) to reconstruct the stability of the cervical spine and prevent cage subsidence. However, there have been no comparison studies on the biomechanical performance of quadrilateral ACP and triangular ACP. The objective of this study is to investigate the functional outcomes of quadrilateral ACP and triangular ACP usage in ACDF surgery. In this study, a finite element model of intact C1-C7 segments was established and verified. Additionally, two implant systems were built; one using triangle anterior cervical plates (TACP) and another using quadrilateral orion anterior cervical plate (QACP). Both models were then compared in terms of their postoperative biomechanical performance, under normal and excessive motion. Compared to QACP, the peak stress of the TACP screws and plates occurred at 359.2 MPa and 97.2 MPa respectively and were the highest during over extension exercises. Alternately, compared to TACP, the endplate peak stress and the cage displacement of QACP were the largest at over extension, with values of 7.5 MPa and 1.2 mm, respectively. Finally, the average stress ratio of bone grafts in TACP was relatively high at 31.6%. In terms of biomechanical performance, TACP can share the load more flexibly and reduce the risks of cage subsidence and slippage but the screws have high peak stress value, thereby increasing the risk of screw slippage and fracture. This disadvantage must be considered when designing a TACP based implant for a potential patient.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) and endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) are highly sensitive for diagnosing and staging lung cancer. In recent years, targeted therapy has shown great significance in the treatment of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Using these minimally invasive techniques to obtain specimens for molecular testing will provide patients with a more convenient diagnostic approach. AIM: To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of tissue samples obtained using EUS-FNA and EBUS-TBNA for molecular diagnosis of NSCLC. METHODS: A total of 83 patients with NSCLC underwent molecular testing using tissues obtained from EUS-FNA or EBUS-TBNA at the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital from January 2017 to June 2019. All enrolled patients underwent chest computed tomography or positron emission tomography/computed tomography prior to puncture. We detected abnormal expression of EGFR, KRAS, MET, HER2, ROS1 and anaplastic lymphoma kinase protein. Two patients failed to complete molecular testing due to insufficient tumor tissue. The clinical features, puncture records, molecular testing results and targeted treatment in the remaining 81 patients were summarized. RESULTS: In a total of 99 tissue samples obtained from 83 patients, molecular testing was successfully completed in 93 samples with a sample adequacy ratio of 93.9% (93/99). Biopsy samples from two patients failed to provide test results due to insufficient tumor tissue. In the remaining 81 patients, 62 cases (76.5%) were found to have adenocarcinoma, 11 cases (13.6%) had squamous cell carcinoma, 3 cases (3.7%) had adenosquamous carcinoma and 5 cases (6.2%) had NSCLC-not otherwise specified. The results of molecular testing showed EGFR mutations in 21 cases (25.9%), KRAS mutations in 9 cases (11.1%), ROS-1 rearrangement in 1 case (1.2%) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive in 5 cases (6.2%). Twenty-four patients with positive results received targeted therapy. The total effectiveness rate of targeted therapy was 66.7% (16/24), and the disease control rate was 83.3% (20/24). CONCLUSION: Tissue samples obtained by EUS-FNA or EBUS-TBNA are feasible for the molecular diagnosis of NSCLC and can provide reliable evidence for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Women are reported more likely to develop depression and dementia. However, the involved mechanism is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: Here, we clarified the role of estrogen receptor α (ERα) in depression and cognitive deficit in young female rats. METHODS: After being exposed to 7-weeks' chronic unpredicted mild stress (CUMS), the depression resilient rats (Res rats) and depressed rats (Dep rats) were selected according to their records in sucrose preference test, forced swimming test, and open field test. Their cognition abilities were tested by Morris water maze. Proteomic assay, immunoprecipitation, western blotting, immunohistochemical, and Nissl staining were also used to understand the involved mechanism. RESULTS: Compared with control rats and Res rats, Dep rats showed cognitive deficits and hippocampal impairments revealed by proteomic data, neuron losses, increased cleaved caspase-3, ß-catenin phosphorylation, and glycogen synthase kinase3ß (GSK3ß) activation. As ERα, but not ERß, was found declined in hippocampi of Dep rats, 4,4k,4a-(4-propyl-[1H]-pyrazole-1,3,5-triyl) trisphenol (PPT, an ERα agonist, 1 mg/kg/day), was used to treat Dep rats (Dep + PPT). Twenty days later, the depressive behaviors, cognition deficits, and hippocampal neuron loss were rescued in Dep + PPT rats. Furthermore, Res and Dep + PPT rats had higher levels of ß-catenin combined with ERα and lower levels of ß-catenin combined with GSK3ß than Dep rats in hippocampi. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrated hippocampal ERα is an important pro-resilient factor in CUMS-induced depressive behaviors and cognitive deficits. It was also given that the neuroprotection afforded by hippocampal ERα/Wnt interactions have significant implications for cognition and emotion in young females.

BACKGROUND: Gastric bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are extremely rare cystic masses caused by abnormal development of the respiratory system during the embryonic period. Gastric bronchial cysts are rare lesions first reported in 1956; as of 2019, only 37 cases are available in the MEDLINE/PubMed online databases. BCs usually have no clinical symptoms in the early stage, and their imaging findings also lack specificity. Therefore, they are difficult to diagnose before histopathological examination. CASE SUMMARY: A 55-year-old woman presented at our hospital with intermittent epigastric pain. She had a slightly high level of serum carbohydrate antigen 72-4 (CA 72-4). Endoscopic ultrasound found that a cystic mass originated from the submucosa of the posterior gastric wall near the cardia, indicating a diagnosis of cystic hygroma of the stomach. Furthermore, a computed tomography scan demonstrated a quasi-circular cystic mass closely related to the lesser curvature of the gastric fundus with a low density. Because the imaging examinations did not suggest a malignancy and the patient required complete resection, she underwent laparoscopic surgery. As an intraoperative finding, this cystic lesion was located in the posterior wall of the fundus and contained some yellow viscous liquid. Finally, the pathologists verified that the cyst in the fundus was a gastric BC. The patient recovered well with normal CA 72-4 levels, and her course was uneventful at 10 mo. CONCLUSION: This is a valuable report as it describes an extremely rare case of gastric BC. Moreover, this is the first case of BC to present with elevated CA 72-4 levels.

An aorto-oesophageal fistula is a rare, life-threatening complication caused by sharp foreign bodies in the oesophagus. We report an aorto-oesophageal fistula in the inferior segment of thoracic oesophagus caused by a fish bone. Multiplanar reconstruction of computed tomography and computed tomography angiography demonstrated that a foreign body had pierced from the left posterior wall of the oesophagus into the descending aortic wall. These computed tomography images can help radiologists make the correct diagnosis and provide precise evidence for clinicians to perform a timely surgical intervention. In addition, a nodule in the upper lobe of the left lung was found by accident. The pathological finding after surgery revealed an invasive adenocarcinoma.

Although the transcription factor Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) plays important roles in both inflammation and cancer, the mechanism by which this factor promotes cervical carcinogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated a potential role for tumour necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11a (TNFRSF11a), the corresponding gene of which is a direct binding target of KLF5, in tumour cell proliferation and invasiveness. Coexpression of KLF5 and TNFRSF11a correlated significantly with tumorigenesis in cervical tissues (P < 0.05) and manipulation of KLF5 expression positively affected TNFRSF11a mRNA and protein expression. Functionally, KLF5 promoted cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasiveness in a manner dependent partly on TNFRSF11a expression. Moreover, in vivo functional TNFRSF11a-knockdown mouse studies revealed suppression of tumorigenicity and liver metastatic potential. Notably, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α induced KLF5 expression by activating the p38 signalling pathway and high KLF5 and TNFRSF11a expression increased the risk of death in patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma. Our results demonstrate that KLF5 and TNFRSF11a promote cervical cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasiveness.

Excessive alcohol consumption provides risk to cardiomyopathy with unknown mechanisms. Resveratrol, a plant polyphenol, is widely reported for its cardiovascular benefits, while its effect on alcohol-induced impairments in cardiomyocytes largely remains unknown. Effects of resveratrol on the cardiomyocytes under ethanol insult were studied in vitro. Ethanol exposure in mouse neonatal cardiomyocytes increased cell death and induced a specific loss of tight junction protein, connexin 43. In spite of adverse effects at higher concentrations, resveratrol at 10 µM improved cell viability of cardiomyocytes in the presence of a deleterious dose of ethanol. Importantly, the co-treatment of resveratrol with ethanol exhibited the restoration of connexin 43 protein. Further assays showed that these effects were likely associated with the antioxidative actions of resveratrol, and correlated with the alleviation of MAP kinase activation in cultured cardiomyocytes in response to ethanol. Our data suggests a novel mechanism of cardiomyocyte cell loss under ethanol exposure and provides new evidence of protective effects of resveratrol in the cardiomyocytes.

Oleanolic acid (OA), a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid, has been reported to have several benefits and medicinal properties. However, its protective effects against silica­induced lung injury and fibrosis remain to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of OA on oxidative stress, and the expression of cytokines and collagen in silicotic rats. Male rats were induced by intratracheal instillation of silicosis (250 mg/kg), with the exception of the control group (NS). The rats in the OA group were intragastrically administered with OA (60 mg/kg/d). The rats in the solvent control group were gavaged daily with 0.6% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (10 ml/kg) solution for 56 consecutive days. The data showed that OA significantly attenuated the extent of silicosis fibrosis by histopathologic analysis of the lung tissues. In addition, oxidative stress activated by silica exposure, as evidenced by increasing of malondialdehyde content, and activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the lung, was regulated by treatment with OA. Furthermore, enzyme­linked immunosorbent assay analysis showed that OA significantly decreased the levels of tumor necrosis factor­α and transforming growth factor­ß1. Immunohistochemistry analysis showed that OA significantly decreased collagen types I and III. In investigating the mechanisms underlying the action of OA, it was found that OA decreased the level of phosphorylated AKT1, which in turn inactivated the transcriptional of nuclear factor (NF)­κB in the development and progress of silicosis. In conclusion, these results suggested that the protective effects of OA were due, at least in part, to its anti­oxidant activity and its ability to decrease the expression of cytokines and collagen by modulating the AKT/NF­κB pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To classify colorectal carcinoma (CRC) by TNM staging integrated with the gene expression profile and copy number variation (CNV). METHODS: Profile data of gene expression and CNV of CRC were downloaded from public database and processed with batch bias adjustment, quartile normalization, missing value estimation and feature filtration. The processed profiles of mRNA and CNV were introduced into the codes of Bayesian consensus clustering (BCC) method and were used to calculate the subclasses of CRC. With the follow-up information of disease free survival of CRC patients, the prognostic values of the subclasses was investigated and the software of function enrichment analysis was employed to discover the major pathway signaling to each interesting subclass. All statistic analyses were performed under R-3.0.1 environment or by using SPSS 16.0 software. RESULTS: Profile data of gene expression and corresponding CNV from 335 CRC patients with TNM stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ and followed-up information were obtained. After feature filtering, the profiles contained 1578 probes of mRNA and 345 location of CNV. Four CRC subclasses were identified by the integrative analysis with BCC, and the concordances of BCC subclasses and each of gene-based subclasses (Cramer's V=0.49), CNV-based subclasses (Cramer's V=0.51) and Marisa's subclasses (Cramer's V=0.32) were statistically significant (Ps<0.001). Among BCC subclasses, BCC-I had a favorable prognosis, while BCC-Ⅳ had more unfavorable prognosis. The differences of prognosis were significant among BCC-I, BCC-(Ⅱ+Ⅲ) and BCC-Ⅳ with an overall log-rank P<0.001. The top enriched function was DNA damage and repair signaling when BCC-I compared to BCC-Ⅳ, and the new subgroups classified by the genes associated with enriched signaling had the better prognostic value than BCC subclasses but both of them were significantly correlated (Cramer's V=0.39, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: BCC method is effective to integrate multi-type genomic data for molecular classification of colorectal carcinoma, and the BCC-Ⅳ subclass has poor prognosis, which may be associated with the decreased repairing function of DNA damage.

BACKGROUND: The Ras/Raf/ERK1/2 signaling pathway controls many cellular responses such as cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, and death. In the nervous system, emerging evidence also points to a death-promoting role for ERK1/2 in both in vitro and in vivo models of neuronal death. To further investigate how Ras/Raf/ERK1/2 up-regulation may lead to the development of spinal cord injury, we developed a cellular model of Raf/ERK up-regulation by overexpressing c-Raf in cultured spinal cord neurons (SCNs) and dorsal root ganglions (DRGs). METHODS: DRGs and SCNs were prepared from C57BL/6J mouse pups. DRGs or SCNs were infected with Ad-Raf-1 or Ad-Null adenovirus alone. Cell adhesion assay and cell migration assay were investigated, DiI labeling was employed to examine the effect of the up-regulation of Ras/Raf/ERK1/2 signaling on the dendritic formation of spinal neurons. We used the TO-PRO-3 staining to examine the apoptotic effect of c-Raf on DRGs or SCNs. The effect on the synapse formation of neurons was measured by using immunofluorescence. RESULTS: We found that Raf/ERK up-regulation stimulates the migration of both SCNs and DRGs, and impairs the formation of excitatory synapses in SCNs. In addition, we found that Raf/ERK up-regulation inhibits the development of mature dendritic spines in SCNs. Investigating the possible mechanisms through which Raf/ERK up-regulation affects the excitatory synapse formation and dendritic spine development, we discovered that Raf/ERK up-regulation suppresses the development and maturation of SCNs. CONCLUSION: The up-regulation of the Raf/ERK signaling pathway may contribute to the pathogenesis of spinal cord injury through both its impairment of the SCN development and causing neural circuit imbalances.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of erythromycin on electrical activity and emptying of the intrathoracic stomach after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. METHODS: Thirty patients undergoing esophagectomy for cancer and esophagogastrostomy above the aortic arch were divided into the study group (n=15) and the control group (n=15). Electrogastrography and radionuclide gastric emptying were examined for these patients before and 1, 3, 6, 12 months after surgery. Patients in the study group received erythromycin (0.25 g tid po) for 1 week before examination. RESULTS: The wave amplitude (Uv), dominant frequency (CPM) and percentage of normal slow wave (%) of electrogastrogram decreased after surgery and returned to normal at the first postoperative month in the study group and the 12th postoperative month in the control group (P>0.05). Gastric emptying was significantly delayed after esophagectomy, and returned to normal one year after operation in the study group (P>0.05). However, gastric emptying remained abnormal in the control group (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Erythromycin improves electrical activity and emptying of the stomach after esophagectomy for cancer. Gastric emptying recovery later than the recovery of electrical activity, which may be related to gastric ischemia and edema.

The activity of protein phosphatase (PP) 2A is downregulated and promotes the hyperphosphorylation of tau in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanism for PP2A inactivation has not been elucidated. We have reported that PP2A phosphorylation at tyrosine 307 (Y307) is involved in PP2A inactivation. Here, we further studied the upstream mechanisms for PP2A phosphorylation and inactivation. We found that zinc, a heavy metal ion that is widely distributed in the normal brain and accumulated in the susceptible regions of AD brain, could induce PP2A inhibition, phosphorylation of PP2A at Y307 and tau hyperphosphorylation both in rat brains and cultured N2a cells, while zinc chelating prevented these changes completely. Upregulation of PP2A chemically or genetically attenuated zinc-induced tau hyperphosphorylation, whereas mutation of Y307 to phenylalanine abolished the zinc-induced tyrosine phosphorylation and inactivation of PP2A. Zinc could activate Src, while PP2, a specific Src family kinases inhibitor, attenuated zinc-induced PP2A phosphorylation and inactivation, indicating that zinc induces PP2A Y307 phosphorylation and inactivation through Src activation. In human tau transgenic mice, zinc chelator rescued PP2A activity, prevented Src activation, and reduced hyperphosphorylated and insoluble tau levels. We concluded that zinc induces PP2A inactivation and tau hyperphosphorylation through Src-dependent pathway, regulation of zinc homeostasis may be a promising therapeutic for AD and the related tauopathies.

The estrogenic activities of source water from Yangtze River, Huaihe River, Taihu Lake and groundwater in Yangtze River Delta in the dry and wet season were determined by use of reporter gene assays based on African green monkey kidney (CV-1) cell lines. Higher estrogenic activities were observed in the dry season, and the estrogenic potentials in water samples from Taihu Lake were greater than other river basins. None of the samples from groundwater showed estrogen receptor (ER) agonist activity. The 17ß-Estradiol (E2) equivalents (EEQs) of water samples in the dry season ranged from 9.41×10(-1) to 1.20×10(1) ng E2 L(-1). In the wet season, EEQs of all the water samples were below the detection limit as 9.00×10(-1) ng E2 L(-1) except for one sample from Huaihe River. The highest contribution of E2 was detected in Yangtze River as 99% of estrogenic activity. Nonylphenol (NP, 100% detection rate) and octylphenol (OP, 100% detection rate) might also be responsible for the estrogenic activities in water sources. Potential health risk induced by the estrogenic chemicals in source water may be posed to the residents through water drinking.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Eupolyphaga fibrinolyric protein (EFP) on microvessel density (MVD) and the expression of vascular endthelial growth factor in transplantation S180 and H22 mice. METHODS: The MVD in tumor was measured with immunohistochemical SP method and the VEGF level in serum was measured with ELISA method. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, EFP could significantly reduce the microvessel density and decrease the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor. CONCLUSION: EFP has the effect of anti-angiogenesis.
