RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on periodontitis (PD) progression and behavioural outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight Wistar rats were divided into four groups: non-trained (NT); non-trained with PD; HIIT with PD; and HIIT. The HIIT protocol, involving daily treadmill sessions, spanned 8 weeks, with PD induced by ligature after the 6th week. Behavioural tests were conducted to assess anxiety and memory. Post euthanasia, we evaluated the systemic inflammatory profile and oxidative stress markers in the hippocampus and amygdala. A morphological evaluation and elemental composition analysis of the mandibular alveolar bone were performed. RESULTS: PD exacerbated alveolar bone level, bone surface damage and alterations in calcium and phosphorus percentages on the bone surface (p < .05), while HIIT attenuated these changes (p < .05). HIIT improved systemic inflammatory markers altered by PD (tumour necrosis factor [TNF]-α, interleukin [IL]-10, TNF-α/IL-10 and IL-1ß/IL-10 ratios, p < .05). PD animals exhibited lower total antioxidant capacity and levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the amygdala and hippocampus, respectively (p < .05). HIIT maintained these parameters at levels similar to those in NT animals. HIIT improved anxiety and memory outcomes altered by PD (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: HIIT attenuates systemic inflammation, anxiety and memory outcomes promoted by PD.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE Body mass index (BMI) values of 25 kg/m2 or more have been associated with poor cognitive outcomes, reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and mental health disorders. Participating in regular exercise may improve these negative outcomes. However, the optimal exercise prescription remains to be clarified. The purpose of the present study is to compare the effects of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on HRQoL, depression, and anxiety levels in middle-aged overweight men. METHODS Twenty-five sedentary, overweight men participated in the 8-week training intervention. Subjects were randomized into MICT or HIIT and performed exercise sessions three times per week for 8 weeks. Participants answered the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire, the Short Form-36 survey, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Statistical analysis was carried out using the GraphPad Prism 7.0, and the level of significance was set at 5% to quantitative variables. RESULTS HRQoL scores were enhanced to all domains of both the groups. MICT and HIIT did not significantly change the depression levels in middle-aged overweight men (p>0.05). Nevertheless, MICT was capable to reduce the anxiety levels in middle-aged overweight men (p<0.05). However, there was not a significant change in the anxiety levels at the HIIT group. CONCLUSIONS HIIT may be a useful treatment to improve the HRQoL, but MICT alone can positively impact the anxiety levels in middle-aged overweight men.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is associated with better physical performance, but there is limited information about the effects of HIIT on redox state of cerebellar tissue, cerebral cortex, and cognition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of HIIT on redox state parameters in cerebellar tissue, cerebral cortex, and cognitive function of Wistar rats. Forty-three young male Wistar rats were housed under controlled environmental conditions with food, and water ad libitum. Animals were assigned to HIIT or Non-trained groups. HIIT protocol was performed during six weeks. Speed was determined through the assesstment of the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). HIIT consisted of short bouts (1 min) running on a treadmill at 10° inclination (85-100% of VO2max) with 2 min of active recovery (60% of VO2max, without inclination). Non-trained group was daily exposed to a disconnected treadmill for the same amount of time as HITT group. Both groups were submitted to the open field, and novel object recognition tasks after six weeks. Malondialdehyde concentration (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (FRAP) were quantified to determine the redox state. HIIT presented increased levels of MDA, SOD, and FRAP (p < 0.05) in the cerebellar tissue, but no differences were seen in cerebral cortex. These results indicated an improved antioxidant capacity, despite increased MDA levels in the cerebellar tissue. Both groups did not present impairment in locomotor activity, development of anxious behavior or cognitive decline. HIIT enhanced the antioxidant defenses on cerebellar tissue with no deleterious effects on rats' cognition.

PURPOSE: To analyze possible relationships between load, body mass and lean body mass in an effort to provide norm-referenced standards for the one repetition maximum test and to predict whole body muscle strength (WBMS) in older individuals. METHODS: We measured body mass, lean body mass and the one repetition maximum (1RM) test in different exercises in 189 older men and women aged 61 to 82 years. Whole body muscle strength (WBMS) was calculated as the sum of loads of the different exercises. RESULTS: For women, the inclusion of body mass or lean body mass increased the R2 from 0.41 to 0.82, and yielded the following equation: WBMS = 75.788 + (2.288 × load in kg of latissimus pull down) + (0.799 × lean body mass in kg). For men, the inclusion of either body mass (WBMS = 290.33 - [3.140 × age in years] + [1.236 × body mass in kg] + [1.549 × load in kg of leg press]) or, in particular, lean body mass (WBMS = 343.25 - [3.298 × age in years] + [.415 × lean body mass in kg] + [1.737 × load in kg of leg press]) decreased the standard error of the estimate. CONCLUSION: Our data support the idea that load correlates with body mass and lean body mass and that the load used for a specific exercise is significantly associated with WBMS, thereby permitting the development of a predictive model of WBMS with increased accuracy.


OBJETIVO: Analisar as relações entre carga, massa corporal e massa magra na tentativa de fornecer normas padrão de referencia para o teste de uma repetição máxima e predizer a forca muscular corporal em idosos. MÉTODOS: A massa corporal, a massa magra e o teste de uma repetição máxima (1RM) foram medidos em 189 idosos com idade entre 61 e 82 anos. A forca muscular corporal (FMC) foi calculada como a somatória das cargas dos diferentes exercícios. RESULTADOS: Para mulheres, a inclusão da massa corporal ou da massa magra aumentou o R2 de 0.41 para 0.82, e resultou na equação: FMC = 75.788 + (2.288 × carga em kg para o puxador) + (0.799 × massa magra em kg). Para homens, a inclusão da massa corporal (FMC = 290.33 - [3.140 × idade em anos] + [1.236 × massa corporal em kg] + [1.549 × carga em kg para o leg press]) ou da massa magra (FMC = 343.25 - [3.298 × idade em anos] + [.415 × massa magra em kg] + [1.737 × carga em kg para o leg press]) diminuiu o erro padrão da estimativa. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados suportam a ideia de que a carga correlaciona-se com a massa corporal e massa magra, e que a carga empregada em determinado exercício está significativamente associada com a forca muscular corporal. Portanto, isso permite o desenvolvimento de um modelo preditivo de forca muscular corporal com substancial acurácia.

Previous studies have shown that strength exercise improves memory and increases expression of a myriad of proteins involved on neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Conversely, chronic exposure to supraphysiological levels of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) can induce psychiatric abnormalities, cognitive deficits, impair neurotransmission, alter the levels of neurotrophic factors, decrease cell proliferation and neurogenesis, and enhance neuronal cell death. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the AAS nandrolone decanoate (ND) administration during a strength exercise program on cell proliferation, apoptotic status and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the rat hippocampus. Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to 4 weeks of progressive strength exercise in a vertical ladder apparatus with or without daily doses (5.0 mg/kg, SC) of ND. Immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that strength exercise increased significantly the number of Ki-67-positive cells (a cell proliferation marker) in dentate gyrus (DG) of hippocampus. However, this effect was abrogated when strength exercise was combined with ND. Although western blot analysis of whole hippocampus showed no significant differences in Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression among groups, the immunoreactivity of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax was significantly increased in DG, CA1 and CA3 hippocampal subfields of sedentary rats treated with ND. Moreover, the increase in the immunoreactivity of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 (DG and CA3) induced by strength exercise was diminished by ND. There were no significant differences in BDNF expression among experimental groups. Therefore, the present findings suggest that the beneficial effects of strength exercise on hippocampal cell proliferation and apoptotic signaling are impaired by ND.

O objetivo do estudo foi investigar os efeitos de diferentes tipos de exercício físico nos escores indicativos de depressão em idosos. Participaram 168 voluntários idosos, de ambos os sexos, com idades de 60 a 75 anos (65,66±4,28 anos), sendo 40 mulheres e 128 homens. Os voluntários foram alocados em sete grupos distintos: a) Controle sedentário (n=40); b) Controle resistido (n=23); c) Caminhada (n=23); d) Lazer (n= 20); e) Cicloergômetro (n=23); f) Resistido 50% de 1RM (n=19); e g) Resistido 80% de 1RM (n=20), sendo submetidos a um protocolo de seis meses de treinamento físico, três vezes por semana. O grupo "a" permaneceu sem alterar suas atividades de rotina durante o período de estudo e não se engajou em nenhum programa de exercício físico, já o grupo "b" compareceu no laboratório, mas realizou os exercícios sem carga. Antes e imediatamente após o período de estudo, os voluntários foram submetidos a um protocolo de avaliação para determinação do consumo de oxigênio e responderam à Escala Geriátrica de Depressão. Os resultados revelaram que os grupos "c" e "e", que se exercitaram em intensidades com predomínio do metabolismo aeróbio, apresentaram redução nos escores de depressão, sendo que as demais intervenções não foram suficientes para promover redução nessa variável. Os dados sugerem que exercícios com predominância no metabolismo aeróbio são mais efetivos em promover reduções em escores de depressão de idosos.


The study aimed to investigate the effects of different types of exercise in indicative scores of depression in the elderly. Participated 168 elderly volunteers of both sexes, aged 60-75 years (65.66 ± 4.28 years), 40 women and 128 men. The volunteers were divided into seven distinct groups: a) Sedentary control (n = 40); b) Resisted control (n = 23); c) Walking (n = 23); d) Outdoor (n = 20); e) Cycle ergometer (n = 23); f) Resisted 50% of 1RM (n = 19); and g) Resisted 80% of 1RM (n = 20), and subjected to a protocol of six months of physical training three times a week. The group "a" remained without changing their routine activities during the study period and did not engage in any exercise program, as the group "b" appeared in the laboratory, but performed the exercises without charge. Before and immediately after the study period, the volunteers underwent an evaluation protocol for determination of oxygen consumption and responded to the Geriatric Depression Scale. The results revealed that the groups "c" and "e", who exercised at intensities with predominant aerobic metabolism, showed reduction in depression scores, and other measures were not sufficient to promote reduction in this variable. The data suggest that exercise dominance in aerobic metabolism is more effective in reducing depression scores in elderly.

The Several animal models have been proposed for resistance training. In addition, the results of these studies have been highly variable. Some of the studies have used negative reinforcement, electric shock or food deprivation to motivate the learning of the task. Features such as conditioning through electric shock may undermine the significance of the results or even prevent the model from being successfully executed. Due to these reasons, in this study we propose to use an adaptation of the vertical ladder climbing model for progressive resistance training in rats, albeit with a unique feature to ensure the homogeneity of the study groups: a period of adaptation to the apparatus without any negative reinforcement followed by a subsequent pairing of animals based on their ability to learn. The animals were distributed in the experimental group who were subjected to 8 weeks of a progressive resistance exercise protocol and the control group. After 8wks, the gastrocnemius, soleus, flexor digitorum longus (FDL), and plantaris muscles were removed and the cross-sectional area morphometry was obtened. The animals from experimental group showed hypertrophy [F(4, 15)=17,404, P < 0.001] for gastrocnemius [60% of hipertrophy; Control (2628,64 ± 348,50) versus Experimental (4207,77 ± 1256,52); ES=1.96; Power=0,86]; FDL [35% of hipertrophy; Control (2753,80 ± 359,54) versus Experimental (3711,84 ± 279,45); ES=2.99; Power=0.99] and plantaris [38% of hipertrophy; Control (2730,44 ± 320,56) versus Experimental (3767,30 ± 625,80); ES=2.19; Power=0.92], without modifications for soleus. All animals successfully completed the 8-week progressive resistance training program without any injuries, abandonment or death. Negative reinforcements such as electric shock were not required at any time in the experiment. Alguns modelos animais de treinamento resistido vem sendo proprostos ao longo do tempo, com resultados variáveis e por vezes conflitantes. Contudo, todos eles utilizam reforço negativo ao ensinar os animais o aprendizado da tarefa, por exemplo, choque elétrico ou privação alimentar e tais condicionamentos podem interferir de algma forma na variável estudada. Por estas razões, este estudo propões uma adaptação de um modelo de treinamento resistido de subida em escada vertical já existente, mas com um período de familiarização ao equipamento, sem choque elétrico, seguido pela distribuição de acordo com o desempenho do aprendizado de subida em escada. Os animais foram distribuídos em: grupo experimental (submetido a oito semanas de treinamento resistido) e grupo controle. Após a intervenção, os músculos gastrocnemius, soleus, flexor digitorum longus (FDL), and plantaris foram removidos e a moformetria das fibras muculares foi realizada. Os animais do grupo experimental mostraram hipertrofia [F(4, 15)=17,404, P < 0.001] nos músculos: gastrocnemius [60% de hipertrofia; Control (2628,64 ± 348,50) versus Experimental (4207,77 ± 1256,52); ES=1.96; Power=0,86]; FDL [35% de hipertrofia; Control (2753,80 ± 359,54) versus Experimental (3711,84 ± 279,45); ES=2.99; Power=0.99] e plantaris [38% de hipertrofia; Control (2730,44 ± 320,56) versus Experimental (3767,30 ± 625,80); ES=2.19; Power=0.92], sem alterações no soleus. Ainda, todos os animais completaram o protocolo sem qualquer lesão, abandono ou morte. Reforço negativo como choque elétrico ou de outra natureza não foi realizado por todo o experimento. Concluindo, foi mostrado uma adaptação de modelo de treinamento resistido progressivo em ratos.
