Purpose: The occurrence of hyponatremia is a prevalent complication following transnasal transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenoma surgery, which adversely affects patient prognosis, hospitalization duration, and rehospitalization risk. The primary objective of this study is to strengthen the correlation between clinical factors associated with pituitary adenoma and postoperative hyponatremia. Additionally, the study aims to develop a predictive model for postoperative hyponatremia in patients with pituitary adenoma, with the ultimate goal of establishing a basis for reducing the occurrence of postoperative hyponatremia following surgical interventions. Methods: The chi-square test or Fisher test was employed for nominal data, while the t-test or Mann-Whitney test was utilized for continuous data analysis. In cases where the data exhibited statistical differences, binary logistic analysis was conducted to examine the risk and protective factors associated with postoperative hyponatremia. XGBoost was employed to construct predictive models for hyponatremia in this study. The patients were partitioned into training and test sets, and the most suitable parameters were determined through five-fold cross-validation and subsequently utilized for training on the training set. The discriminatory capability was assessed on the internal validation set. Results and conclusions: Out of the total 280 patients included in this investigation, 82 patients experienced early postoperative hyponatremia. Among these individuals, male gender (P = 0.02, odds ratio = 1.98) was identified as a risk factor for early postoperative hyponatremia, while preoperative chloride levels (P = 0.021, odds ratio = 0.866) and surgery time (P = 0.039, odds ratio = 0.990) were identified as protective factors against postoperative hyponatremia. The XGBoost model exhibited a sensitivity of 94.2%, a specificity of 61.5%, a positive predictive value of 51.6%, a negative predictive value of 96%, and identified male gender, preoperative sodium, and preoperative cortisol as the most significant predictors. Our findings indicate that gender may have influence in the development of early postoperative hyponatremia in patients with pituitary adenomas.

Cold seep sediments are an important reservoir of microplastics (MPs) whose impact on the structure and function of prokaryotic community is not well understood. In this study, the impact of 0.2% and 1% (w/w) polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP) MPs on the cold seep sediment prokaryotic community was investigated in a 120-day laboratory incubation experiment. The results revealed that exposure to MPs altered sedimentary chemical properties in a type- and concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, MPs significantly altered the structure of bacterial community, with some MPs degradation-associated bacterial phyla significantly increasing (p < 0.05). However, in the case of archaea, the changes in the structure of microbial community were less pronounced (p > 0.05). Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the addition of MPs reduced the network complexity, while PICRUSt2 and FAPROTAX analyses suggested that 0.2% PP and 1% PS MPs had the most significant effects on the nitrogen and carbon cycles (p < 0.05). Overall, this study provides new insights into the effects of MPs on the structure and function of microbial communities in cold seep sediments.

Oil pollution in intertidal zones is an important environmental issue that has serious adverse effects on coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the efficacy of a bacterial consortium constructed from petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers in the bioremediation of oil-polluted sediment. Inoculation of the constructed consortium significantly enhanced the removal of C8-C40n-alkanes (80.2 ± 2.8% removal efficiency) and aromatic compounds (34.4 ± 10.8% removal efficiency) within 10 weeks. The consortium played dual functions of petroleum degradation and biosurfactant production, greatly improving microbial growth and metabolic activities. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed that the consortium markedly increased the proportions of indigenous alkane-degrading populations (up to 3.88-times higher than that of the control treatment). Microbial community analysis demonstrated that the exogenous consortium activated the degradation functions of indigenous microflora and promoted synergistic cooperation among microorganisms. Our findings indicated that supplementation of a bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers is a promising bioremediation strategy for oil-polluted sediments.

BACKGROUND: Many laboratories have described the in vitro isolation of multipotent cells with stem cell properties from the skin of various species termed skin-derived stem cells (SDSCs). However, the cellular origin of these cells and their capability to give rise, among various cell types, to male germ cells, remain largely unexplored. METHODS: SDSCs were isolated from newborn mice skin, and then differentiated into primordial germ cell-like cells (PGCLCs) in vitro. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was then applied to dissect the cellular origin of SDSCs using cells isolated from newborn mouse skin and SDSC colonies. Based on an optimized culture strategy, we successfully generated spermatogonial stem cell-like cells (SSCLCs) in vitro. RESULTS: Here, using scRNA-seq and analyzing the profile of 7543 single-cell transcriptomes from newborn mouse skin and SDSCs, we discovered that they mainly consist of multipotent papillary dermal fibroblast progenitors (pDFPs) residing in the dermal layer. Moreover, we found that epidermal growth factor (EGF) signaling is pivotal for the capability of these progenitors to proliferate and form large colonies in vitro. Finally, we optimized the protocol to efficiently generate PGCLCs from SDSCs. Furthermore, PGCLCs were induced into SSCLCs and these SSCLCs showed meiotic potential when cultured with testicular organoids. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings here identify pDFPs as SDSCs derived from newborn skin and show for the first time that such precursors can be induced to generate cells of the male germline.

Microplastics (MPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) generally coexist in the environment, posing risks to public health and the environment. This study investigated the effect of different MPs on the microbial anaerobic reductive dechlorination of Aroclor 1260, a commercial PCB mixture. MP exposure inhibited microbial reductive dechlorination of PCBs, with inhibition rates of 39.43%, 23.97%, and 17.53% by polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS), respectively. The dechlorination rate decreased from 1.63 µM Cl- d-1 to 0.99-1.34 µM Cl- d-1 after MP amendment. Chlorine removal in the meta-position of PCBs was primarily inhibited by MPs, with no changes in the final PCB dechlorination metabolites. The microbial community compositions in MP biofilms were not significantly different (P > 0.05) from those in suspension culture, although possessing greater Dehalococcoides abundance (0.52-0.81% in MP biofilms; 0.03-0.12% in suspension culture). The co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the presence of MPs attenuated microbial synergistic interactions in the dechlorinating culture systems, which may contribute to the inhibitory effect on microbial PCB dechlorination. These findings are important for comprehensively understanding microbial dechlorination behavior and the environmental fate of PCBs in environments with co-existing PCBs and MPs and for guiding the application of in situ PCB bioremediation.

Pregnancy is associated with substantial physiological changes of the heart, and disruptions in these processes can lead to peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). The molecular processes that cause physiological and pathological changes in the heart during pregnancy are not well characterized. Here, we show that mTORc1 was activated in pregnancy to facilitate cardiac enlargement that was reversed after delivery in mice. mTORc1 activation in pregnancy was negatively regulated by the mRNA-destabilizing protein ZFP36L2 through its degradation of Mdm2 mRNA and P53 stabilization, leading to increased SESN2 and REDD1 expression. This pathway impeded uncontrolled cardiomyocyte hypertrophy during pregnancy, and mice with cardiac-specific Zfp36l2 deletion developed rapid cardiac dysfunction after delivery, while prenatal treatment of these mice with rapamycin improved postpartum cardiac function. Collectively, these data provide what we believe to be a novel pathway for the regulation of mTORc1 through mRNA stabilization of a P53 ubiquitin ligase. This pathway was critical for normal cardiac growth during pregnancy, and its reduction led to PPCM-like adverse remodeling in mice.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of multiparameter intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in the prediction of the prognosis of hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 53 HICH patients. The patients underwent removal of intracranial hemorrhage and decompressive craniectomy after admission. A ventricular ICP monitoring probe was used to continuously and invasively monitor mean arterial pressure (MAP) and ICP after surgery. The NEUMATIC system was used to collect ICP data, including pressure reactivity index (PRx), ICP dose (DICP), amplitude and pressure regression (RAP), and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). The mean PRx, CPP, RAP, ICP, and DICP20 mmHg × h were calculated with 1 h as the time segment. According to the Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) scores after discharge, the patients were grouped into the poor prognosis group (GOS I-III) and the good prognosis group (GOS IV and V). The two groups were compared in terms of GOS scores in the treatment and prediction of prognosis of patients. RESULTS: The good prognosis group showed significantly lower values of mean ICP, DICP20 mmHg × h, RAP, and PRx than the poor prognosis group, while CPP was significantly higher (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PRx, DICP, RAP, and CPP could reflect intracranial changes in patients and were significantly correlated with the prognosis of the patients. Mean ICP, PRx, DICP20 mmHg × h, and RAP were negatively correlated with prognosis, while CPP was positively correlated with prognosis.

This study investigated the effect of immobilized biosurfactant-producing bacteria on the bioremediation of diesel oil-contaminated seawater. Initially, a biosurfactant-producing bacterium, LQ2, was isolated from a marine cold-seep region, and identified as Vibrio sp. The biosurfactant produced by LQ2 was characterized as a phospholipid, exhibiting high surface activity with strong stability. Meanwhile, the inoculation of biochar-immobilized LQ2 demonstrated superior efficiency in removing diesel oil (94.7%, reduction from 169.2 mg to 8.91 mg) over a seven-day period compared to free-cell culture (54.4%), through both biodegradation and adsorption. In addition, the microbial growth and activity were greatly enhanced with the addition of immobilized LQ2. Further experiment showed that degradation-related genes, alkB and CYP450-1, were 3.8 and 15.2 times higher in the immobilized LQ2 treatment, respectively, than those in the free cell treatment. The findings obtained in this study suggest the feasibility of applying immobilized biosurfactant-producing bacteria, namely LQ2, in treating diesel oil-contaminated seawater.

Background: Data on inter-tumoral heterogeneity and clonal evolution of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (panNENs) with liver metastasis are limited. The aim of this study was to explore different patterns of clonal evolution of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms with liver metastasis and the possible distinctive signaling pathways involved between G2 neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs). Methods: Tumor tissues of five patients (10 samples) with pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms with synchronous liver metastasis were analyzed using next-generation sequencing. PyClone, Gene Ontology, and Reactome pathway enrichment analysis were also applied. Results: Mutated genes varied in individuals, reflecting the inter-tumoral heterogeneity of panNENs. The distribution of subclones varied during tumor metastasis, and different clonal evolution patterns were revealed between NETs and NECs. Gene Ontology and Reactome analyses revealed that in both NETs and NECs, signaling pathways and biological processes shared similarities and differences in the primary and metastatic lesions. In addition, the signaling pathway features were different between NETs and NECs. In the primary lesions, epigenetic changes and post-transcriptional modifications participated in NETs, while FGFR signaling, EGFR signaling, and NTRK2 signaling were largely involved in NECs. Although DNA repair and TP53 regulation were both involved in the metastatic lesions, most of the signaling pathways and biological processes disrupted by the mutated genes were different. Conclusions: Our study revealed spatial inter-tumoral heterogeneity and temporal clonal evolution in PanNENs, providing potential therapeutic targets for further prospective clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Serum levels of procalcitonin (PCT) are considered a useful biomarker for the diagnosis of bacterial infection or inflammation. There are few reports of high PCT levels in end-stage liver disease regardless of bacterial infection. Here, we present a case of extremely high PCT levels (> 100 ng/mL) in a patient with severe cirrhosis combined with hepatic carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man developed end-stage cirrhosis with hepatic carcinoma. Radiographic imaging showed a massive hepatocellular carcinoma with multiple loci lack of indications of resection. Hence, transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization was performed three times over a period of 4 months. Before and after interventional therapies, the biochemistry laboratory results were only slightly abnormal except for persistently high PCT concentrations (> 100 ng/mL), irrespective of the evidence for bacterial infection or sepsis. CONCLUSIONS: This case suggests that continuously high levels of PCT (> 100 ng/mL) may be present in advanced liver disease, particularly in complex situations such as decompensated cirrhosis and liver cancer, in the absence of severe infection or sepsis. This knowledge could expand the significance of PCT in liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Magnifying endoscopy with narrow band imaging (M-NBI) has been applied to examine early gastric cancer by observing microvascular architecture and microsurface structure of gastric mucosal lesions. However, the diagnostic efficacy of non-experts in differentiating early gastric cancer from non-cancerous lesions by M-NBI remained far from satisfactory. In this study, we developed a new system based on convolutional neural network (CNN) to analyze gastric mucosal lesions observed by M-NBI. METHODS: A total of 386 images of non-cancerous lesions and 1702 images of early gastric cancer were collected to train and establish a CNN model (Inception-v3). Then a total of 341 endoscopic images (171 non-cancerous lesions and 170 early gastric cancer) were selected to evaluate the diagnostic capabilities of CNN and endoscopists. Primary outcome measures included diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. RESULTS: The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CNN system in the diagnosis of early gastric cancer were 91.18%, 90.64%, and 90.91%, respectively. No significant difference was spotted in the specificity and accuracy of diagnosis between CNN and experts. However, the diagnostic sensitivity of CNN was significantly higher than that of the experts. Furthermore, the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of CNN were significantly higher than those of the non-experts. CONCLUSIONS: Our CNN system showed high accuracy, sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of early gastric cancer. It is anticipated that more progress will be made in optimization of the CNN diagnostic system and further development of artificial intelligence in the medical field.

BACKGROUND: Immune inhibitory receptors play an important role in chronic infections. However, little is known about their role in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Here, we analyzed the relationship between programmed death-1 (PD-1) and lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3) expression on CD4+ T cells and HBV disease progression. RESULTS: PD-1 and LAG-3 expression was significantly higher on CD4+ T cells from HBV patients than on those from the HCs. In addition, a significant positive correlation was found between the PD-1 and LAG-3 expression levels and the ALT(alanine aminotransferase) level. CD4+ T cell function was inhibited by high PD-1 and LAG-3 levels, and CD4+ T cells with high PD-1 and LAG-3 expression lost the ability to secrete IFN-γ, IL-2 and TNF-α. Furthermore, blockade of the PD-1 and LAG-3 pathways reversed the damage to CD4+ T cell proliferation and cytokine secretion. CONCLUSIONS: CD4+ T cell exhaustion during chronic HBV had high PD-1 and LAG-3 expression and the absence of helper T cell cytokines, including IFN-γ, IL-2 and TNF-α. After blocking PD-L1 and LAG-3, CD4+ T cell function in chronic hepatitis B patients was partially restored.

Recent studies suggest that peroxiredoxin1/2 (Prx1/2) may be involved in the pathophysiology of postischemic inflammatory responses in the brain. In this study, we assessed the distribution and function of Prx1/2 in mice after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We investigated the distribution of Prx1/2 in the brains of mice both in vivo and in vitro using immunofluorescence staining. The expression of Prx1/2 after SAH was determined by Western blot. Adenanthin was used to inhibit Prx1/2 function, and Prx1/2 overexpression was achieved by injecting adeno-associated virus. Oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis were assessed both in vivo and in vitro. The neurologic function, inflammatory response, and related cellular signals were analyzed. The results showed that Prx1 was mainly expressed in astrocytes, and Prx2 was abundant in neurons. The expression of Prx1/2 was elevated after SAH, and their expression levels peaked before proinflammatory cytokines. Inhibiting Prx1/2 promoted neuronal apoptosis by increasing the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels via the apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1/p38 pathway. By contrast, overexpression of Prx1/2 attenuated oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis after SAH. Accumulating evidence suggests neuronal apoptosis has the potential to lead to more harmful effects in the pathological processes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Previous studies have established that milk fat globule-EGF factor-8 (MFG-E8) provides neuroprotection through modulation of inflammation, oxidative stress, and especially apoptosis in cerebral ischemia and neurodegenerative disease. However, the effects of MFG-E8 on neuronal apoptosis in TBI have not yet been investigated. Therefore, we explored the role of MFG-E8 on anti-apoptosis and its potential mechanism following TBI. In the first set of experiments, adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into Sham and TBI groups that were each further divided into five groups representing different time points (6 h, 24 h, 72 h, and 7 days) (n = 9 each). Western blotting, quantitative real-time PCR, and immunofluorescence staining were performed to identify the expression and cellular localization of MFG-E8. In the second set of experiments, four groups were randomly assigned: Sham group, TBI + Vehicle group, and TBI + rhMFG-E8 (1 and 3 µg) (n = 15). Recombinant human MFGE8 (rhMFG-E8) was administrated as two concentrations through intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection at 1 h after TBI induction. Brain water content, neurological severity score, western blotting, and immunofluorescence staining were measured at 24 and 72 h following TBI. In the final set of experiments, MFG-E8 siRNA (500 pmol/3 µl), integrin ß3 siRNA (500 pmol/3 µl), and PI3K inhibitor LY294002 (5 and 20 µM) were injected i.c.v. and thereafter rats exposed to TBI. Western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, brain water content, neurological severity score, and Fluoro-Jade C (FJC) staining were used to investigate the effect of the integrin-ß3/FAK/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway on MFG-E8-mediated anti-apoptosis after TBI. The expression of MFG-E8 was mainly located in microglial cells and increased to peak at 24 h after TBI. Treatment with rhMFG-E8 (3 µg) markedly decreased brain water content, improved neurological deficits, and reduced neuronal apoptosis at 24 and 72 h after TBI. rhMFG-E8 significantly enhanced the expression of integrin-ß3/FAK/PI3K/AKT pathway-related components. Administration of integrin-ß3 siRNA and LY294002 (5 and 20 µM) abolished the effect of rhMFG-E8 on anti-apoptosis and neuroprotection after TBI. This study demonstrated for the first time that rhMFG-E8 inhibits neuronal apoptosis and offers neuroprotection. This is suggested to occur through the modulation of the integrin-ß3/FAK/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, highlighting rhMFG-E8 as a potentially promising therapeutic strategy for TBI patients.

Cells respond to iron deficiency by activating iron-regulatory proteins to increase cellular iron uptake and availability. However, it is not clear how cells adapt to conditions when cellular iron uptake does not fully match iron demand. Here, we show that the mRNA-binding protein tristetraprolin (TTP) is induced by iron deficiency and degrades mRNAs of mitochondrial Fe/S-cluster-containing proteins, specifically Ndufs1 in complex I and Uqcrfs1 in complex III, to match the decrease in Fe/S-cluster availability. In the absence of TTP, Uqcrfs1 levels are not decreased in iron deficiency, resulting in nonfunctional complex III, electron leakage, and oxidative damage. Mice with deletion of Ttp display cardiac dysfunction with iron deficiency, demonstrating that TTP is necessary for maintaining cardiac function in the setting of low cellular iron. Altogether, our results describe a pathway that is activated in iron deficiency to regulate mitochondrial function to match the availability of Fe/S clusters.

Little is known about how chronic inflammation contributes to the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially the initiation of cancer. To uncover the critical transition from chronic inflammation to HCC and the molecular mechanisms at a network level, we analyzed the time-series proteomic data of woodchuck hepatitis virus/c-myc mice and age-matched wt-C57BL/6 mice using our dynamical network biomarker (DNB) model. DNB analysis indicated that the 5th month after birth of transgenic mice was the critical period of cancer initiation, just before the critical transition, which is consistent with clinical symptoms. Meanwhile, the DNB-associated network showed a drastic inversion of protein expression and coexpression levels before and after the critical transition. Two members of DNB, PLA2G6 and CYP2C44, along with their associated differentially expressed proteins, were found to induce dysfunction of arachidonic acid metabolism, further activate inflammatory responses through inflammatory mediator regulation of transient receptor potential channels, and finally lead to impairments of liver detoxification and malignant transition to cancer. As a c-Myc target, PLA2G6 positively correlated with c-Myc in expression, showing a trend from decreasing to increasing during carcinogenesis, with the minimal point at the critical transition or tipping point. Such trend of homologous PLA2G6 and c-Myc was also observed during human hepatocarcinogenesis, with the minimal point at high-grade dysplastic nodules (a stage just before the carcinogenesis). Our study implies that PLA2G6 might function as an oncogene like famous c-Myc during hepatocarcinogenesis, while downregulation of PLA2G6 and c-Myc could be a warning signal indicating imminent carcinogenesis.

SIRT2 is a cytoplasmic sirtuin that plays a role in various cellular processes, including tumorigenesis, metabolism, and inflammation. Since these processes require iron, we hypothesized that SIRT2 directly regulates cellular iron homeostasis. Here, we have demonstrated that SIRT2 depletion results in a decrease in cellular iron levels both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, we determined that SIRT2 maintains cellular iron levels by binding to and deacetylating nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) on lysines 506 and 508, leading to a reduction in total and nuclear NRF2 levels. The reduction in nuclear NRF2 leads to reduced ferroportin 1 (FPN1) expression, which in turn results in decreased cellular iron export. Finally, we observed that Sirt2 deletion reduced cell viability in response to iron deficiency. Moreover, livers from Sirt2-/- mice had decreased iron levels, while this effect was reversed in Sirt2-/- Nrf2-/- double-KO mice. Taken together, our results uncover a link between sirtuin proteins and direct control over cellular iron homeostasis via regulation of NRF2 deacetylation and stability.

Excess cellular iron increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and causes cellular damage. Mitochondria are the major site of iron metabolism and ROS production; however, few studies have investigated the role of mitochondrial iron in the development of cardiac disorders, such as ischemic heart disease or cardiomyopathy (CM). We observe increased mitochondrial iron in mice after ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and in human hearts with ischemic CM, and hypothesize that decreasing mitochondrial iron protects against I/R damage and the development of CM. Reducing mitochondrial iron genetically through cardiac-specific overexpression of a mitochondrial iron export protein or pharmacologically using a mitochondria-permeable iron chelator protects mice against I/R injury. Furthermore, decreasing mitochondrial iron protects the murine hearts in a model of spontaneous CM with mitochondrial iron accumulation. Reduced mitochondrial ROS that is independent of alterations in the electron transport chain's ROS producing capacity contributes to the protective effects. Overall, our findings suggest that mitochondrial iron contributes to cardiac ischemic damage, and may be a novel therapeutic target against ischemic heart disease.

The growth of oocytes and the development of follicles require certain pathways involved in cell proliferation and survival, such as the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway and the Notch signalling pathway. The aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction between Notch and the PI3K/AKT signalling pathways and their effects on primordial follicle recruitment. When the Notch pathway was inhibited by L-685,458 or N-[N-(3,5-difluorophenacetyl)-l-alanyl]-S-phenylglycinet-butyl ester (DAPT) in vitro, the expression of genes in the pathway and the percentage of oocytes in growing follicles decreased significantly in mouse ovaries. By 2 days postpartum, ovaries exposed to DAPT, short interference (si) RNA against Notch1 or siRNA against Hairy and enhancer of split-1 (Hes1) had significantly decreased expression of HES1, the target protein of the Notch signalling pathway. In contrast, expression of phosphatase and tensin homologue (Pten), a negative regulator of the AKT signalling pathway, was increased significantly. Co immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) revealed an interaction between HES1 and PTEN. In addition, inhibition of the Notch signalling pathway suppressed AKT phosphorylation and the proliferation of granulosa cells. In conclusion, the recruitment of primordial follicles was affected by the proliferation of granulosa cells and regulation of the interaction between the Notch and PI3K/AKT signalling pathways.

Primary malignant tumors of the maxillary sinuses are rare. The present study reports the case of a maxillary sinus adenocarcinoma that was misdiagnosed as a frog sparganum infection, and discusses the differential diagnosis between the two diseases. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with a carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus that presented as a progressive mass in the left eye and the maxillary sinus. Eosinophilic infiltration was observed in the subcutaneous tissue, and the patient had experienced previous exposure to undercooked frog. Although an anti-sparganum ELISA was performed and the results were negative, a sparganosis infection was initially diagnosed. However, following the application of anti-sparganosis treatment, no improvements were observed. Histological examination of an orbital mass resection revealed an adenocarcinoma with bone metastases. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report a maxillary sinus carcinoma misdiagnosed as sparganosis. Therefore, the findings of the current study should be considered in the differential diagnosis between a carcinoma of the maxillary sinus and sparganosis. Avoidance of misdiagnosis at an early stage is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment of sinonasal malignancies.
