Objective: To evaluate the accuracy and safety of the LANCET robotic system, a robot arm assisted operation system for total hip arthroplasty via a multicenter clinical randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 116 patients were randomized into two groups: LANCET robotic arm assisted THA group (N = 58) and the conventional THA group (N = 58). General information about the patients was collected preoperatively. Operational time and bleeding were recorded during the surgery. The position of the acetabular prosthesis was evaluated by radiographs one week after surgery and compared with preoperative planning. Harris score, hip mobility, prosthesis position and angle and complications were compared between the two groups at three months postoperatively. Results: None of the 111 patients who ultimately completed the 3-month follow-up experienced adverse events such as hip dislocation and infection during follow-up. In the RAA group, 52 (92.9 %) patients were located in the Lewinnek safe zone and 49 (87.5 %) patients were located in the Callanan safe zone. In the control group were 47 (85.5 %) and 44 (80.0 %) patients, respectively. In the RAA group, 53 (94.6 %) patients had a postoperative acetabular inclination angle and 51 (91.1 %) patients had an acetabular version angle within a deviation of 5° from the preoperative plan. These numbers were significantly higher than those of the control group, which consisted of 42 (76.4 %) and 34 (61.8 %) patients respectively. There were no significant differences between the two groups of subjects in terms of general condition, intraoperative bleeding, hip mobility, and adverse complications. Conclusion: The results of this prospective randomized, multicenter, parallel-controlled clinical study demonstrated that the LANCET robotic system leads conventional THA surgery in accuracy of acetabular cup placement and does not differ from conventional THA surgery in terms of postoperative hip functional recovery and complications. The translational potential of this article: In the past, the success rate of total hip arthroplasty (THA) relied heavily on the surgeon's experience. As a result, junior doctors needed extensive training to become proficient in this technique. However, the introduction of surgical robots has significantly improved this situation. By utilizing robotic assistance, both junior and senior doctors can perform THA quickly and efficiently. This advancement is crucial for the widespread adoption of THA, as patients can now receive surgical treatment in local facilities instead of overwhelming larger hospitals and straining medical resources. Moreover, the development of surgical robots with fully independent intellectual property rights holds immense value in overcoming the limitations of high-end medical equipment. This aligns with the objectives outlined in the 14th Five Year Plan for National Science and Technology Strategy.

To compare the analgesic efficacy and adverse events of proximal versus distal ACB for adults undergoing knee arthroplasty, we searched PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Embase to identify all eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The study quality of the RCTs was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. Heterogeneity among studies was examined by Cochrane Q test. Our primary outcomes were pain intensity at rest/during movement and morphine consumption. Statistical analyses were conducted by RevMan Software. Seven eligible studies involving 400 subjects were included in this meta-analysis with 202 participants in the proximal ACB group and 198 participants in the distal ACB group. The results demonstrated that proximal ACB provided significantly better pain relief at rest at 2 h (SMD -0.27, 95% CI -0.54 to -0.01, four trials, 222 participants, I2 = 0, p = 0.04) and 24 h (SMD -0.28, 95% CI -0.48 to -0.08, seven trials, 400 participants, I2 = 0, p = 0.006) following the surgery. We found no evidence of a difference in postoperative pain intensity at other timepoints. Furthermore, we noted no evidence of a difference in cumulative morphine consumption and occurrence of adverse events. Proximal ACB provides better pain relief and comparable adverse effects profile compared with distal ACB. The analgesic benefit offered by proximal ACB, however, did not appear to extend beyond the first 24 h. The overall evidence level was mostly low or very low, which requires more well-organized multicenter randomized trials in the future.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a frequent complication following hip arthroplasty. There still has been a lack of studies analyzing the perioperative risk factors of DVT following hip arthroplasty via direct anterior approach (DAA). METHODS: Patients who underwent unilateral primary hip arthroplasty via DAA in our hospital from August 2015 to January 2022 were included. Patients' data, including demographic data, clinical features, past medical history, operative data, and laboratory data, were analyzed and compared between patients with and without DVT. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the independent risk factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the best cutoff value of continuous variables with statistical significance. RESULT: A total of 651 patients were included. The incidence of DVT before and after hip arthroplasty was 12.7% and 6.7%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated that age ≥ 65 years (OR 4.594, 95% CI 1.994-10.587), women (OR 2.331, 95% CI 1.285-4.227), and cerebral infarction (OR 1.984, 95% CI 1.138-3.460) were independent risk factors for preoperative DVT. And age ≥ 65 years (OR 4.859, 95% CI 1.062-22.226), tumor (OR 3.622, 95% CI 1.108-11.841), and preoperative D-dimer (OR 1.040, 95% CI 1.004-1.078) were risk factors for postoperative DVT. The ROC curve analysis showed that the best cutoff value of preoperative D-dimer for the diagnosis of postoperative DVT is 1.44 mg/L. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of DVT in patients undergoing DAA hip arthroplasty was low and the occurrence of DVT before and after unilateral primary hip arthroplasty performed through DAA was related to multiple factors.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the vertical distance from semitendinosus insertion to tibial plateau (S-T) and the physical characteristics of patients, in order to provide reference for incision design to expose the semitendinosus insertion. Methods: The patients with ligament injury who underwent primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction between January 2022 and December 2022 were selected as the research subjects. The patients' baseline data were collected, including age, gender, height, and body mass. During reconstruction operation, the S-T was measured. Considering the S-T as the dependent variable and baseline data as the independent variable, multiple linear regression analysis was used to establish a regression equation to determine the possible influencing factors of semitendinosus insertion location. Results: According to the selection standard, a total of 214 patients were enrolled, including 156 males and 58 females, aged (27±9) years (14-49 years), with a height of (174.7±6.8) cm (range, 160-196 cm) and a body mass of (73.43±12.35) kg (range, 53-105 kg). The S-T was (56.36±3.61) mm (range, 47-67 mm). The multiple linear regression analysis results showed that the height was positively correlated with S-T (ß=0.407, SE=0.055, t=7.543, P<0.001); the regression equation was S-T=-14.701+0.407×height, R2=0.690. Conclusion: There was a linear relationship between the height and semitendinosus insertion. The location of semitendinosus insertion estimated by the formula (S-T=-14.701+0.407×height) is reasonable, which provides a theoretical basis for rapid, accurate, and safe location of semitendinosus insertion and design of surgical incision in clinic.

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs), which are emerging chlorinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), have attracted increasing attention because they are frequently detected in treated tap water, entrainment water, etc. These compounds are mainly generated during the water treatment process using chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine dioxide as disinfectants, and display more toxic effects than regulated DBPs, such as trihalomethane and haloacetic acid. HBQs have been recognized as potential bladder carcinogens and are harmful to the nervous system. Additionally, they can exert genotoxic effects and cause oxidative damage to DNA and proteins. The risk of HBQs in aquatic products is expected to rise because the disinfection of public facilities has significantly increased in recent years. Therefore, developing a sensitive and accurate analytical method to detect HBQs in aquatic products is of great importance. Several analytical methods, including gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, electrochemical methods, liquid chromatography, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, can be used to identify and quantify HBQs in water. However, to the best of our knowledge, no reports on the determination of HBQ levels in aquatic products are yet available. Further, pretreatment is essential for HBQ determination because of the complex matrix effects of aquatic products. Herein, a sensitive and accurate method based on the QuEChERS technique coupled with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of five HBQs in aquatic products. For the QuEChERS procedure, the pretreatment conditions, such as the extraction solvent and adsorbent species, were systematically optimized. The sample was extracted with 10 mL of 10% methanol acetonitrile solution (containing 0.1% formic acid), dehydrated, and centrifuged with sodium chloride and anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The supernatant was purified using a QuEChERS packing material consisting of 50 mg N-propylethylenediamine (PSA), 30 mg of graphitized carbon black (GCB), and 30 mg of neutral alumina (Al2O3), dried with nitrogen, and concentrated. The five HBQs were separated on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 µm) using 0.25% acetonitrile formate solution and 0.25% formic acid aqueous solution as the mobile phase under a gradient elution program and then detected using UPLC-MS/MS with negative electrospray ionization (ESI-) under multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Quantitative analysis was performed using a matrix-matched external standard method. The five HBQs achieved rapid separation within 6 min, indicating that the proposed method has a much shorter separation time compared with previous studies. The matrix effect was evaluated by establishing a matrix-matched calibration curve. The results showed that 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,5-DCBQ) presented a matrix-enhancing effect, whereas the other HBQs displayed matrix-inhibiting effects. In particular, tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCBQ) exhibited strong inhibitory effects. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the five HBQs demonstrated good linear relationships in the range of 1.0-50.0 µg/L, with correlation coefficients (r)≥0.9992. The detection limits of the method were 0.15-0.8 µg/kg, and the recoveries of the target compounds were 85.9%-116.5%. The relative standard deviations were 1.4%-8.2%, which indicates good reproducibility. The proposed method was successfully applied to actual sample detection, and 2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCMBQ) was detected in grass carp. The proposed method is convenient, sensitive, accurate, and suitable for the simultaneous determination of five HBQs in aquatic products. Moreover, the developed method provides a reliable reference for the routine monitoring of trace HBQs in food samples.

Kojic acid naturally appears in fermented foods and can be formed during the aerobic fermentation process induced by Aspergillus and Penicillium fungi. It is widely used in the food industry because it exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties and does not affect food taste. However, recent studies indicate that kojic acid may be a potential carcinogen. Therefore, assessing the health risks of kojic acid in fermented foods are of great importance, and developing a sensitive and accurate analytical method for this compound is a significant endeavor. Much efforts have been devoted to the detection of kojic acid using electrochemistry, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). HPLC and HPLC-MS/MS are the analytical techniques most often employed for this purpose. Of these two methods, HPLC-MS/MS displays excellent sensitivity and is the optimal selective technique. Pretreatment is usually necessary for kojic acid determination because of the complex matrix effects of fermented foods. However, few researches on the determination of kojic acid in food are available, and, to the best of our knowledge, the determination of kojic acid using solid-phase extraction (SPE) pretreatment has not been reported yet. Herein, a convenient, sensitive, and accurate method was developed to determine kojic acid in fermented foods using solid-phase extraction-ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-UPLC-MS/MS). The pretreatment conditions, such as the extraction solvent, cartridge, rinse solvent, and eluent, were systematically optimized. The samples, including soy sauce, vinegar, liquor, sauce, fermented soya bean, and fermented bean curd, were extracted with 0.1% formic acid-absolute ethyl alcohol and purified using a PRiME HLB cartridge. Kojic acid was separated using an ACQUITY UPLC® BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 µm) with formic acid-acetonitrile (1∶999, v/v) and formic acid-5 mmol/L ammonium acetate (1∶999, v/v) solutions as the mobile phases under gradient elution mode. MS was performed in electrospray positive ionization (ESI+) and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) modes. An internal standard method was used for quantification. Under optimized conditions, good linearity was achieved at mass concentrations of 5.0-100.0 µg/L, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9994. The limits of detection and quantification of the method for kojic acid were 2-5 µg/kg and 6-15 µg/kg, respectively. Good recoveries of 86.8%-111.7%, intra-day precisions of 1.0%-7.9% (n=6), and inter-day precisions of 2.7%-10.2% (n=5) were also obtained. The matrix effect was evaluated by establishing a matrix-matching calibration curve, and weak inhibitory effects were found in vinegar and liquor; moderate inhibitory effects in fermented bean curd, fermented soya bean, and soy sauce; and a strong inhibitory effect in sauce. The developed method was used to detect kojic acid in 240 fermented foods, and the results showed that the detection rate of vinegar was the highest, followed by liquor, sauce, soy sauce, fermented soya bean, and fermented bean curd, the contents were 5.69-2272 µg/kg. Matrix interferences can be significantly reduced by optimizing the pretreatment and detection procedures. The proposed method is sensitive, accurate, and can be used to analyze kojic acid in fermented foods.

Objective: To investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of "tail compression fixation+suture bridge" technology under shoulder arthroscopy for treating primary tear in medial enthesis of rotator cuff. Methods: The clinical data of 11 patients with primary tear in medial enthesis of rotator cuff who met the selection criteria between October 2020 and October 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, including 3 males and 8 females, aged 39-79 years, with an average of 61.0 years. Rotator cuff injury was caused by traumatic fall in 8 cases, and the time from injury to admission was 1-4 months, with an average of 2.0 months; the remaining 3 cases had no obvious inducement. The active range of motion of the affected shoulder was limited, with an active forward flexion range of motion of (64.1±10.9)°, abduction of (78.1±6.4)°, internal rotation of (48.2±6.6)°, and external rotation of (41.8±10.5)°; 5 cases had shoulder stiffness. The preoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score was 7.8±0.8 and the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score was 23.9±6.4. The patients were treated with "tail compression fixation+suture bridge" technology under shoulder arthroscopy, and the pain and functional recovery were evaluated by VAS score, ASES score, and active range of motion of shoulder joint at last follow-up; MRI was performed after operation, and the integrity of rotator cuff was evaluated by Sugaya classification system. Results: All the 11 patients were followed up 2-22 months, with an average of 13.5 months. All incisions healed by first intention, and there was no complication such as infection, rotator cuff re-tear, and anchor falling off. At last follow-up, the VAS score was 0.8±0.7 and the ASES score was 93.5±4.2, which significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05). All 11 patients had no significant swelling in the shoulders, and the active range of motion was (165.1±8.8)° in flexion, (75.3±8.4)° in abduction, (56.6±5.5)° in internal rotation, and (51.8±4.0)° in external rotation, which significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05). Shoulder MRI showed adequate tendon thickness and good continuity in 9 cases, including 4 cases with partial high signal area; and 2 cases with inadequate tendon thickness but high continuity and partial high signal area. According to Sugaya classification system, there were 4 cases of type 1 (36.4%), 5 cases of type 2 (45.5%), and 2 cases of type 3 (18.1%). Conclusion: For the patients with primary tear in medial enthesis of rotator cuff, the "tail compression fixation+suture bridge" technology under shoulder arthroscopy is simple and effective.

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are an important type of vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) separator that play the key role of separating positive and negative electrolytes while transporting protons. In order to lower the vanadium ion permeability and improve the proton selectivity of PEMs for enhancing the Coulombic efficiency of VRFBs, herein, various amounts of nano-sized SiO2 particles were introduced into a previously optimized sulfonated poly(arylene ether) (SPAE) PEMs through the acid-catalyzed sol-gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The successful incorporation of SiO2 was confirmed by FT-IR spectra. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the SiO2 particles were well distributed in the SPAE membrane. The ion exchange capacity, water uptake, and swelling ratio of the PEMs were decreased with the increasing amount of SiO2, while the mechanical properties and thermal stability were improved significantly. The proton conductivity was reduced gradually from 93.4 to 76.9 mS cm-1 at room temperature as the loading amount of SiO2 was increased from 0 to 16 wt.%; however, the VO2+ permeability was decreased dramatically after the incorporation of SiO2 and reached a minimum value of 2.57 × 10-12 m2 s-1 at 12 wt.% of SiO2. As a result, the H+/VO2+ selectivity achieved a maximum value of 51.82 S min cm-3 for the composite PEM containing 12 wt.% of SiO2. This study demonstrates that the properties of PEMs can be largely tuned by the introduction of SiO2 with low cost for VRFB applications.

A sensitive and effective method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 14 odorous compounds in drinking water using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) pretreatment. The influencing factors including SPME fiber, ionic strength, temperature and time on the pretreatment procedure were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized conditions, 10 mL of the samples added with 1.0 g sodium chloride was extracted by CAR/PDMS fiber at 60 °C for 30 min and then desorbed at 280 °C for 3 min. The analytes achieved good linearity as the mass concentrations were in the range of 0.0020-10.0 µg L-1 with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9990. The limits of detection (LODs) ranging between 0.2 and 50 ng L-1 were lower than the olfactory threshold of these studied compounds. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 84.8% to 110.6%, and good reproducibility indicated by relative standard deviation (RSD) in the range of 0.50-9.5% was obtained as well. The proposed method was convenient, sensitive and accurate, which was suitable for the routine monitoring 14 odorous compounds in water.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of MAKO robotic-arm assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) via direct anterior approach (DAA) for bony fused hips in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods: Between June 2021 and January 2022, MAKO robotic-arm assisted THA via DAA was applied to treat 10 cases (12 hips) of AS with bony fused hips. There were 7 males and 3 females; the age ranged from 30 to 71 years, with an average age of 42.4 years. The duration of AS was 12-35 years, with an average of 21.4 years. The preoperative hip was ankylosed in flexion in 3 cases, with a flexion angle of 20°, 30°, 35°, respectively; 9 cases were ankylosed in extension. The operation time and complications were recorded; the visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Harris score, and Oxford hip scale (OHS) score before and after operation, and postoperative range of motion (flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation, adduction, and abduction) were used to evaluate the recovery of joint function; according to the postoperative anteroposterior X-ray film and CT scan of both hip joints, the abduction angle, anteversion angle, the difference between bilateral combined off-set and the lower limb length discrepancy were measured. Results: The operation time ranged from 80 to 190 minutes (mean, 134.6 minutes). All 10 patients were followed up 5-11 months (mean, 7.4 months). There was no serious adverse events such as incision infection, deep vein thrombosis of lower extremities, hip redislocation, aseptic loosening of the prosthesis, or death. At 5 months after operation, the acetabular prosthesis angle of abduction was 37°-45° (mean, 40.3°), anteversion angle was 9°-20° (mean, 15.8°). The difference between bilateral combined off-set was 0-10 mm (mean, 4.3 mm); the lower limb length discrepancy was 0-12 mm (mean, 3.5 mm). At last follow-up, the average range of motion of the hip joint was 89.2° in flexion (range, 80°-100°), 1.7° in extension (range, -5°-10°), 7.1° in internal rotation (range, 0°-15°), 20.4° in external rotation (range, 10°-30°), 7.9° in adduction (range, 0°-20°), and 16.5° in abduction (range, 10°-25°). At last follow-up, the VAS score, Harris score, and OHS score significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05). Conclusion: The MAKO robotic-arm assisted THA via DAA can achieve satisfactory results in the treatment of AS with bony fused hip, which has the advantages of accurate prosthesis installation, soft tissue release, and less trauma during operation.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a common and progressive skeletal muscle disorder characterized by atrophic muscle fibres and contractile dysfunction. Accumulating evidence shows that the number and function of satellite cells (SCs) decline and become impaired during ageing, which may contribute to impaired regenerative capacity. A series of myokines/small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) released from muscle fibres regulate metabolism in muscle and extramuscular tissues in an autocrine/paracrine/endocrine manner during muscle atrophy. It is still unclear whether myokines/sEVs derived from muscle fibres can affect satellite cell function during ageing. METHODS: Aged mice were used to investigate changes in the myogenic capacity of SCs during ageing-induced muscle atrophy. The effects of atrophic myotube-derived sEVs on satellite cell differentiation were investigated by biochemical methods and immunofluorescence staining. Small RNA sequencing was performed to identify differentially expressed sEV microRNAs (miRNAs) between the control myotubes and atrophic myotubes. The target genes of the miRNA were predicted by bioinformatics analysis and verified by luciferase activity assays. The effects of identified miRNA on the myogenic capacity of SCs in vivo were investigated by intramuscular injection of adeno-associated virus (AAV) to overexpress or silence miRNA in skeletal muscle. RESULTS: Our study showed that the myogenic capacity of SCs was significantly decreased (50%, n = 6, P < 0.001) in the tibialis anterior muscle of aged mice. We showed that atrophic myotube-derived sEVs inhibited satellite cell differentiation in vitro (n = 3, P < 0.001) and in vivo (35%, n = 6, P < 0.05). We also found that miR-690 was the most highly enriched miRNA among all the screened sEV miRNAs in atrophic myotubes [Log2 (Fold Change) = 7, P < 0.001], which was verified in the atrophic muscle of aged mice (threefold, n = 6, P < 0.001) and aged men with mean age of 71 ± 5.27 years (2.8-fold, n = 10, P < 0.001). MiR-690 can inhibit myogenic capacity of SCs by targeting myocyte enhancer factor 2, including Mef2a, Mef2c and Mef2d, in vitro (n = 3, P < 0.05) and in vivo (n = 6, P < 0.05). Specific silencing of miR-690 in the muscle can promote satellite cell differentiation (n = 6, P < 0.001) and alleviate muscle atrophy in aged mice (n = 6, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that atrophic muscle fibre-derived sEV miR-690 may inhibit satellite cell differentiation by targeting myocyte enhancer factor 2 during ageing.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of a single threaded anchor fixation under shoulder arthroscopy in the treatment of fresh bony Bankart injury. Methods: Between January 2017 and May 2021, 12 patients with fresh bony Bankart injury caused by trauma were treated with a single threaded anchor fixation under shoulder arthroscopy. There were 10 males and 2 females with an average age of 38.8 years (range, 21-64 years). The time between injury and operation ranged from 7 to 30 days (mean, 15.8 days). Preoperative American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score was 44.9±17.4, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) score was 13.1±5.5; the forward supination, lateral external rotation, and lateral internal rotation of shoulder were (130.8±11.8)°, (25.0±7.9)°, and 9.2±1.6, respectively. CT scan and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction showed that the fracture fragment area was less than 1/4 of the glenoid area in 10 cases, and 1/4-1/2 in 2 cases. The operation time was recorded. During follow-up, ASES score, UCLA score, Rowes score, and shoulder range of motion were used to evaluate the effectiveness, and shoulder CT scan and 3D reconstruction were used to evaluate the fracture position and healing. Results: The operation time ranged from 50 to 150 minutes (mean, 85.5 minutes). All patients were followed up 3-18 months (mean, 9.1 months). There was no serious adverse effect such as infection, re-dislocation, or thrombosis. Three patients had shoulder adhesions after operation. At last follow-up, the forward supination of shoulder [(162.1±30.3)°], lateral external rotation [(37.5±11.2)°], and lateral internal rotation (9.2±1.6) significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( t=3.331, P=0.003; t=3.153, P=0.005; t=2.716, P=0.013). The ASES score was 89.7±11.8 and the UCLA score was 32.8±2.4, which significantly increased when compared with those before operation ( t=7.368, P<0.001; t=11.370, P<0.001). The Rowes score ranged from 75 to 100 (mean, 92.9). Among them, 9 cases were excellent and 3 cases were good, with an excellent and good rate of 100%. CT re-examination showed that the fracture line disappeared in 11 cases, and the fracture alignment was good; the alignment of the fracture fragment was poor in 1 case whose fracture fragment area was between 1/4 and 1/2 of the glenoid area. Conclusion: For the fracture fragment area not exceeding 1/4 of the glenoid, the labrum-capsule complex at the lower end of the bone fragment intact, and the non-comminuted fresh bony Bankart injury, a single threaded anchor fixation under shoulder arthroscopy can achieve better effectiveness, has the advantages of less trauma and faster postoperative recovery.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the changes of lower limb hemodynamics parameters before and after wearing graduated compression stockings (GCS) during ankle pump exercise in patients preparing for arthroplastic surgery. METHOD: The leg veins of 16 patients awaiting arthroplasty were analyzed using a Sonosite M-Turbo ultrasound system during ankle pump exercise with or without GCS. The age of them was 70 ± 7 years (mean ± SD) (range 56-82 years) and body mass index was 25.8 ± 3.0 kg/m2 (range 18.0-30.5 kg/m2). Measured data including the cross-sectional area (CSA), anteroposterior (AP) diameter and lateromedial (LM) diameter of the soleus vein (SV), posterior tibial vein (PTV) and great saphenous vein (GSV). Additionally, the peak velocities of femoral vein (FV) were also measured. RESULTS: GCS could significantly decrease the cross-sectional area of SV, PTV and GSV in supine position at rest and maximum ankle plantar flexion. But the compression effect of GCS to SV and GSV was not observed during maximum ankle dorsiflexion. It was found that GCS application reduced the peak flow velocity of the femoral vein from 61.85 cm/s (95% CI = 50.94-72.75 cm/s) to 38.01 cm/s (95% CI = 28.42-47.59 cm/s) (P < 0.001) during ankle plantar flexion and decreased the femoral vein in these patients from 80.65 cm/s (95% CI = 70.37-90.92 cm/s) to 51.15 cm/s (95% CI = 42.58-59.73 cm/s) (P < 0.001) during ankle dorsiflexion. But this effect was not significant in supine position at rest. CONCLUSIONS: GCS could significantly reduce the peak flow velocity of the femoral vein during ankle pump exercise in the patients preparing for arthroplastic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary (IM) femoral alignment instrument is imprecise for the coronal alignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with severe lateral bowing of the femur, while the extramedullary (EM) alignment system does not depend on the structure of the femoral medullary cavity. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the accuracy of postoperative limb alignment with the two femoral alignment techniques for patients with severe coronal femoral bowing. METHODS: From January 2017 to December 2019, patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis and coronal femoral bowing angle (cFBA) ≥ 5° who underwent total knee arthroplasty TKA at our institution were enrolled in the study. The postoperative hip-knee-ankle (HKA) alignment, femoral and tibial component alignment between the IM group and the EM group were compared on 5° ≤ cFBA < 10° and cFBA ≥ 10°. RESULTS: In patients with 5° ≤ cFBA < 10°, no significant differences were observed in the EM group and IM group, including preoperative and postoperative parameters. However, when analyzing the patients with cFBA ≥ 10°, we found a significant difference in postoperative HKA (4.51° in the IM group vs. 2.23°in the EM group, p < 0.001), femoral component alignment angle (86.84° in the IM group vs. 88.46° in the EM group, p = 0.001) and tibial component alignment angle (88.69° in the IM group vs. 89.81° in the EM group, p = 0.003) between the two groups. Compared to the EM group, the IM group presents a higher rate of outliers for the postoperative HKA and femoral components. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that severe lateral bowing of the femur has an important influence on the postoperative alignment with the IM femoral cutting system. In this case, the application of EM cutting system in TKA will perform accurate distal femoral resection and optimize the alignment of lower limb and the femoral component.

Background: Although arthroscopic partial meniscectomy is a widely implemented surgical procedure, studies investigating the time to return to activity (RTA) are rare. Purpose: To explore which factors are associated with the RTA times after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and to investigate whether those factors can also improve short-term patient-reported outcomes. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: The authors reviewed the records of patients who underwent isolated partial meniscectomy in their institution from January 2017 to December 2019. Patient and injury characteristics were documented, and time to RTA was obtained via phone interview in January 2021. Pre- and postoperative outcomes were assessed with the Lysholm score and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score. The chi-square test and independent-samples t test were used to evaluate differences in outcome scores and time to RTA according to the patient and injury characteristics, and risk factors with a P value <.1 in the univariate analysis were used in the binary regression. Results: Included were 215 patients (87 men and 128 women; mean age, 33.7 years [range, 24-75 years]). Of these patients, 204 provided information on time to RTA (mean, 3.3 months). By 3 months postoperatively, 49.5% (101/204) of patients could perform activities without knee-related restriction; this improved to 69.6% (142/204) at 6 months and 90.2% (184/204) at 12 months. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, age (OR, 0.39; 95% CI, 0.21-1.19; P = .044) and injury duration (OR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.19-1.07; P = .032) were significantly associated with the time to RTA. IKDC scores improved significantly from 41.2 preoperatively to 76.7 postoperatively, and in the multivariate logistic regression model, female sex (OR, 2.67; 95% CI, 1.10-6.47; P = .030), body mass index (BMI) ≥27 kg/m2 (OR, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.02-8.66; P = .047), and medial meniscal tear (OR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.04-1.00; P = .050) were associated with inferior outcome scores. Conclusion: Patients aged 40 years and younger who underwent partial meniscectomy surgery within 6 months after a meniscal tear were more likely to have a shorter time to RTA, and female patients with obesity (BMI ≥27 kg/m2), especially those with medial meniscal tears, tended to have inferior clinical outcomes.

Although inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) have been identified in poultry, the induction efficiency is low, because different culture media, feeder cells and feeder layer treatments affect the efficiency of somatic cell reprogramming. We investigated improvement of the feeder culture system for induction of chicken iPSC by comparing the effects of different types and treatments of feeder cells on the growth and proliferation of chicken iPSC. Mouse embryo fibroblasts (MEF), but not Sandoz inbred mouse-derived thioguanine-resistant and ouabain-buffalo rat cells, were suitable feeder cells that supported proliferation of chicken iPSC. Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice, but not Kunming mice, were suitable for preparing MEF that support cell proliferation. Also, MEF feeder cells that had been inactivated by mitomycin C were effective. Leukemia inhibitory factor was not required for chicken iPSC culture when MEF feeder cells were used. The optimal feeder culture system for growth and proliferation of chicken iPSC consisted of MEF feeder cells derived from ICR mice that were inactivated by mitomycin C combined with embryonic germ cell culture medium.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of sagittal femoral bowing on sagittal femoral component alignment, and whether there was correlation between sagittal femoral component alignment and coronal femoral component alignment. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 77 knees in 71 patients who had undergone primary TKA for advanced osteoarthritis. All surgeries were performed by using a standard medial parapatellar approach. The osteotomy was performed with a conventional technique using an intramedullary rod for the femur and a mechanical extramedullary guiding system for the tibia. All patients enrolled in the study were evaluated with full-length lower extremity load-bearing standing scanograms, and the patients had preoperative and postoperative radiographs of the knees. Coronal femoral bowing angle (cFBA), sagittal femoral bowing angle (sFBA), and postoperatively, mechanical tibiofemoral angle of the knee (mTFA), ß angle (femoral component flexion angle) were measured. The radiographic results of both groups were compared using Student's t test. A two-sided Pearson correlation coefficient was obtained to identify the correlations between FBA in the coronal and sagittal planes, as well as FBA and age or BMI, sFBA and ß angle, cFBA and mTFA. Comparison of FSB incidence between different genders was made using Chi-square test. The p value < 0.05 indicates a statistically significant difference. RESULTS: The mean sFBA, cFBA, ß angle, mTFA were 9.34° ± 3.56°(range 1°-16°), 3.25° ± 3.79°(range - 7° to -17°), 3.91° ± 3.15°(range - 1° to -13°), 0.60° ± 1.95°(range - 3° to -6°), respectively. There was no correlation between age and sFBA (CC = 0.192, p = 0.194) or cFBA (CC = 0.192, p = 0.194); similarly, there was no correlation between age and sFBA (CC = 0.067, p = 0.565) or cFBA (CC = 0.069, p = 0.549). The sFBA was correlated with cFBA and ß angle (CC = 0.540, p < 0.01; CC = 0.543, p < 0.01, respectively), and the cFBA was correlated with mTFA (CC = 0.430, p < 0.01). There was no significant difference (p = 0.247) of cFBA between the patients with sFSB and the patients without sFSB. CONCLUSIONS: The current study showed that the sFBA was correlated with cFBA in the patients undergoing TKA and the patients with sFSB usually presented non-cFSB. We also found that sFSB could affect the femoral component alignment in the sagittal plane and cFSB could affect the femoral component alignment in the coronal plane. The sFBA or cFBA was not correlated with age, BMI, or gender.

BACKGROUND: The postoperative complaints of hypoesthesia or a burning sensation due to lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury in patients are not yet solved. The present study aimed to identify the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of LFCN using preoperative ultrasound and evaluate the rate of injury in direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty. METHODS: A total of 59 patients (28 males and 31 females, age 69.0 ± 4.6 years, BMI 24.7 ± 3.0 kg/m2) were randomly allocated to the ultrasound group and 58 patients (28 males and 30 females, age 68.5 ± 4.5 years, BMI 24.8 ± 2.8 kg/m2) were in the control group. Surgeons received the data of 3D distribution of LFCN only in the ultrasound group before surgery with respect to the direction, the depth on the skin, and the length to tensor fasciae latae (TFL). The anatomical characteristics of LFCN in the surgical region were summarized. At 1 and 3 months of post surgery, the rate of LFCN injury and abnormal sensitive area was evaluated in both groups. RESULTS: There was a significant consistency in gender, age and BMI of these two groups (P > 0.05). Based on the data from the ultrasound group, over 90% of patients had one or two branches of LFCN. LFCN always courses in the fascia layer, the depth ranged from 6.8 ± 2.6 (3.0-12.0) mm to 11.1 ± 3.4 (4.0-17.0) mm and depended on the thickness of the subcutaneous fat, and length was 3.3 ± 4.6 (- 5.0-10.0) mm at proximal part and - 2.7 ± 4.7 (- 10.0-8.0) at distal end to the medial edge of TFL. Both the rate of LFCN injury and abnormal sensory area in the ultrasound group was significantly lower than those in the control group (3.4% vs. 25.9%, P = 0.001, at 1 month; 3.4% vs. 22.4%, P = 0.005, at 3 months). CONCLUSIONS: LFCN mostly courses along the medial border of TFL in the fascia layer. The 3D distribution of LFCN using preoperative ultrasound mapping could help the surgeons to evaluate the risk of injury preoperatively and decrease the rate of injury during the operation. However, some branch injuries, especially for the fan type LFCN, could not be avoided.

OBJECTIVE: Gold nanorods (AuNRs) show great potential for versatile biomedical applications, such as stem cell therapy and bone tissue engineering. However, as an indispensable shape-directing agent for the growth of AuNRs, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is not optimal for biological studies because it forms a cytotoxic bilayer on the AuNR surface, which interferes with the interactions with biological cells. METHODS: Citrate-stabilized AuNRs with various aspect-ratios (Cit-NRI, Cit-NRII, and Cit-NRIII) were prepared by the combination of end-selective etching and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)-assisted ligand exchange method. Their effects on osteogenic differentiation of the pre-osteoblastic cell line (MC3T3-E1), rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs), and human periodontal ligament progenitor cells (PDLPs) have been investigated. Potential signaling pathway of citrate-stabilized AuNRs-induced osteogenic effects was also investigated. RESULTS: The experimental results showed that citrate-stabilized AuNRs have superior biocompatibility and undergo aspect-ratio-dependent osteogenic differentiation via expression of osteogenic marker genes, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and formation of mineralized nodule. Furthermore, Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway might provide a potential explanation for the citrate-stabilized AuNRs-mediated osteogenic differentiation. CONCLUSION: These findings revealed that citrate-stabilized AuNRs with great biocompatibility could regulate the osteogenic differentiation of multiple cell types through Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, which promote innovative AuNRs in the field of tissue engineering and other biomedical applications.

Cationic group distribution and elemental composition are two key factors determining the conductivity and stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). Herein, fluorinated tetra-dimethylaminomethyl-poly(fluorenyl ether)s (TAPFE)s were designed as the polymer precursors, which were reacted with 6-bromo-N,N,N-trimethylhexan-1-aminium bromide to introduce di-quaternary ammonium (DQA) containing side chains. The resultant DQA-TAPFEs with a rigid fluorinated backbone and flexible multi-cationic side chains exhibited distinct micro-phase separation as probed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). DQA-TAPFE-20 with an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.55 mmol g-1 exhibited a SO42- conductivity of 10.1 mS cm-1 at room temperature, much higher than that of a control AEM with an identical backbone but spaced out cationic groups, which had a similar IEC of 1.60 mmol g-1 but a SO42- conductivity of only 3.2 mS cm-1. Due to the Donnan repulsion effect, the DQA-TAPFEs exhibited significantly lower VO2+ permeability than Nafion 212. The VRFB assembled with DQA-TAPFE-20 achieved an energy efficiency of 80.4% at 80 mA cm-1 and a capacity retention rate of 82.9% after the 50th cycling test, both higher than those of the VRFB assembled with Nafion 212 and other AEMs in the literature. Therefore, the rationally designed DQA-TAPFEs are promising candidates for VRFB applications.
