RESUMO
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a promising unique material for various biomedical and cosmetic applications due to its morphology, mechanical strength, high purity, high water uptake, non-toxicity, chemical controllability, and biocompatibility. Today, extensive investigation is into the manufacturing of BC-based composites with other components such as nanoparticles, synthetic polymers, natural polymers, carbon materials, and biomolecules, which will allow the development of a wide range of biomedical and cosmetic products. Moreover, the addition of different reinforcement substances into BC and the organized arrangement of BC nano-fibers have proven a promising improvement in their properties for biomedical applications. This review paper highlights the progress in synthesizing BC-based composites and their applications in biomedical fields, such as wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and cancer treatment. It emphasizes high-performance BC-based materials and cosmetic applications. Furthermore, it presents challenges yet to be defeated and future possibilities for BC-based composites for biomedical and cosmetic applications.

A novel choline-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) with low halogen content-namely choline lactate-lactic acid (CLL)-was synthesized by replacing the chloride anion with lactate anion in choline chloride-lactic acid (CCL). CLL and CCL treatments were conducted at 140 °C for 12 h with hydrogen bond acceptor/hydrogen bond donor =1/10, thereafter composition analysis and characterizations of the lignin extracted by DES treatment (DES lignin) and the solid residue were carried out. The proposed low halogen content DES presented an improved lignin extraction efficiency. The CLL treatment extracted 90.13% of initial lignin from poplar, while CCL extracted 86.02%. In addition, the CLL treatment also provided DES lignin with an improved purity (91.17%), lower molecular weight (Mw/Mn=1805/971 g/mol) and more concentrated distribution (polydispersity index=1.86). The efficient lignin extraction was mainly ascribed to the cleavage of ß-O-4 bonds in lignin macromolecule, especially in the guaiacyl units, thereby breaking them into smaller molecules, facilitating the lignin extraction. The replacement of chloride anion allowed CLL acting as a more efficient DES to interact with lignin macromolecules, thus providing lignin with higher uniformity and suitable molecular weight. The low halogen content DES system proposed in present work could benefit the fractionation of biomass, improve the valorization of lignin compounds and facilitate industrial process in the downstream.
RESUMO
Xylose residue (XR), after diluted acid treatment of corncob, consists of cellulose and lignin. However, structural changes of XR lignin have not been investigated comprehensively, and this has seriously hindered the efficient utilization of lignin. In this study, corncob milled wood lignin (CC MWL), and xylose residue milled wood lignin (XR MWL) were isolated according to the modified milled wood lignin (MWL) method. The structural features of two lignin fractions were thoroughly investigated via fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and two dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR) spectroscopy techniques. XR MWL with higher yield and lower bound carbohydrate contents presented more phenolic OH contents than CC MWL due to partial cleavage of ß-O-4. Furthermore, the molecular weights of XR MWL were increased, possibly because of condensation of the lignin during the xylose production. A study on antioxidant activity showed that XR lignin had better radical scavenging ability than that of 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-phenol (BHT) and CC MWL. The results suggested that the lignin in xylose residue, showing great antioxidant properties, has potential applications in food additives.
RESUMO
An ultrafiltered low-molecular-weight preparation of chelating compounds was isolated from a wood-containing culture of the white-rot basidiomycete Coriolus versicolor. This preparation could chelate Fe3+ and reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+, demonstrating that the substance may serve as a ferric chelator, oxygen-reducing agent, and redox-cycling molecule, which would include functioning as the electron transport carrier in Fenton reaction. Lignin was treated with the iron-binding chelator and the changes in structure were investigated by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, difference spectrum caused by ionization under alkaline conditions and nitrobenzene oxidation. The results indicated that the iron-binding chelator could destroy the beta-O-4 bonds in etherified lignin units and insert phenolic hydroxyl groups. The low-molecular-weight chelator secreted by C. versicolor resulted in new phenolic substructures in the lignin polymer, making it susceptible to attack by laccase or manganese peroxidase. Thus, the synergic action of the iron-binding chelator and the lignocellulolytic enzymes made the substrate more accessible to degradation.
