Ship emissions are a significant source of air pollution, and the primary policy to control is fuel oil quality improvement. However, the impact of this policy on particle size distribution and composition characteristics remains unclear. Measurements were conducted on nine different vessels (ocean-going vessels, coastal cargo ships, and inland cargo ships) to determine the impact of fuel upgrading (S < 0.1% m/m marine gas oil (MGO) vs S < 0.5% m/m heavy fuel oil (HFO)) on elemental carbon (EC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted by ships. (1) Fuel improvement significantly reduced EC and PAH emission, by 31 ± 25 and 45 ± 38%, respectively. However, particle size distributions showed a trend toward finer particles, with the peak size decreasing from DP = 0.38-0.60 µm (HFO) to DP = 0.15-0.25 µm (MGO), and the emission factor of DP < 100 nm increased. (2) Changes in emission characteristics led to an increase in the toxicity of ultrafine particulate matter. (3) Ship types and engine conditions affected the EC and PAH particle size distributions. Inland ships have a more concentrated particle size distribution. Higher loads result in higher emissions. (4) The composition and engine conditions of fuel oils jointly affected pollutant formation mechanisms. MGO and HFO exhibited opposite EC emissions when emitting the same level of PAHs.

BACKGROUND: Cell cycle protein-dependent kinase inhibitor protein 3 (CDKN3), as a member of the protein kinase family, has been demonstrated to exhibit oncogenic properties in several tumors. However, there are no pan-carcinogenic analyses for CDKN3. METHODS: Using bioinformatics tools such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the UCSC Xena database, a comprehensive pan-cancer analysis of CDKN3 was conducted. The inverstigation encompassed the examination of CDKN3 function actoss 33 different kinds of tumors, as well as the exploration of gene expressions, survival prognosis status, clinical significance, DNA methylation, immune infiltration, and associated signal pathways. RESULTS: CDKN3 was significantly upregulated in most of tumors and correlated with overall survival (OS) of patients. Methylation levels of CDKN3 differed significantly between tumors and normal tissues. In addition, infiltration of CD4 + T cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts, macrophages, and endothelial cells were associated with CDKN3 expression in various tumors. Mechanistically, CDKN3 was associated with P53, PI3K-AKT, cell cycle checkpoints, mitotic spindle checkpoint, and chromosome maintenance. CONCLUSION: Our pan-cancer analysis conducted in the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the involvement of CDKN3 gene in tumorigenesis. The findings suggest that targeting CDKN3 may potentially lead to novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of tumors.

TNFAIP8L1, as a recently identified member in TNFAIP8 family, plays an important role in tumorigenesis. However, a pan-cancer analysis of TNFAIP8L1 in human tumors has not been conducted until now. The main purpose of study is to investigate TNFAIP8L1 during 33 different types of human tumors by using TCGA and GTEx. The pan-cancer analysis showed that TNFAIP8L1 was significantly over-expressed in 15 cancers and low-expressed in 9 cancers. There were distinct relations between TNFAIP8L1 expression and prognosis of patients with cancer. Furthermore, we also found that DNA methylation and RNA modification of TNFAIP8L1 were associated with many cancers. And then, we detected that TNFAIP8L1 level was positively associated with cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in many tumors. And, we obtained that TNFAIP8L1 expression was related with most of immune inhibitory and stimulatory genes in multiple types of tumors. We also found TNFAIP8L1 expression was correlated with most of chemokine, receptor, MHC, immunoinhibitor and immunostimulator gens in most of cancers. Moreover, we detected TNFAIP8L1 expression was associated with TMB and MSI in several tumors. Finally, TNFAIP8L1 gene had a significant positive association with 5 genes including BCL6B, DLL4, PCDH12, COL4A1 and DLL4 in the majority of tumors. GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analyses showed that TNFAIP8L1 in thepathogenesis of cancer may be related to "purine nucleoside binding," "purine ribonucleoside binding," "ECM-receptor interaction," etc. Our first pan-cancer study may provide a deep comprehending of TNFAIP8L1 in tumoeigenesis from different tumors.

Biodiesel, derived from alkyl esters of vegetable oils or animal fats, has gained prominence as a greener alternative to diesel due to its reduced particle mass. However, it remains debatable whether biodiesel exposure has more severe health issues than diesel. This study performed high-resolution mass spectrometry to examine the detailed particle chemical compositions and lipidomics analysis of human lung epithelial cells treated with emissions from biodiesel and diesel fuels. Results show the presence of the peak substances of CHO compounds in biodiesel combustion that contain a phthalate ester (PAEs) structure (e.g., n-amyl isoamyl phthalate and diisobutyl phthalate). PAEs have emerged as persistent organic pollutants across various environmental media and are known to possess endocrine-disrupting properties in the environment. We further observed that biodiesel prevents triglyceride storage compared to diesel and inhibits triglycerides from becoming phospholipids, particularly with increased phosphatidylglycerols (PGs) and phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs), which potentially could lead to a higher probability of cancer metastasis.

Context: Degenerative changes in the lumbar spine more commonly cause spinal stenosis and with the aging of society, its incidence is on the rise. Endoscopic spinal surgery is a minimally invasive technique for decompression. The efficacy of percutaneous, endoscopic, large-channel fusion and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) need confirmation by more studies. Objective: The study intended to investigate the clinical efficacy of percutaneous endoscopic large-channel fusion and TLIF in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis, to find the best treatment plan. Design: The research team performed a retrospective study. Setting: The study took place at Nanjing Lishui People's Hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, PR China. Participants: Participants were 100 patients with degenerative, lumbar, spinal stenosis who had been admitted to the hospital between October 2018 and October 2022. Intervention: The research team randomly divided participants into an intervention group and a control group, with 50 participants in each group. The intervention group received percutaneous, endoscopic, large-channel fusion and internal fixation, and the control group received foraminal, lumbar, interbody fusion. Outcome Measures: The research team measured: (1) perioperative indexes, (2) clinical efficacy at a postoperative follow-up at 6 months postintervention, (3) indexes for inflammatory responses at baseline and postintervention, (4) postoperative pain at baseline and at months 3 and 6 postintervention using a visual analog scale (VAS), (6) lumbar function at baseline and months 3 and 6 postintervention using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scale, and (7) complications. Results: Compared with the control group, the intervention group's perioperatively related and inflammatory-response indexes were significantly better: (1) amount of bleeding- 112.67 ± 17.38 for the control group and 78.62 ± 10.52 for the intervention group (P = .002); (2) volume of drainage-79.63 ± 14.21 for the control group and 52.18 ± 8.21 for the intervention group (P = .001); (3) ESR at baseline and postintervention-22.41 ± 5.62 and 15.18 ± 5.26, respectively, for the control group and 22.58 ± 5.82 and 10.54 ± 3.18, respectively, for the intervention group, with P = .013 postintervention; and (4) CRP at baseline and postintervention-17.42 ± 3.52 and 13.98 ± 3.65 for the control group, respectively, and 18.65 ± 3.78 and 10.14 ± 2.78 for the intervention group, with P = .008 postintervention; Also, compared to the control group, the intervention group's: (1) total effective rate was significantly higher (P = .018); (2) incidence of postoperative complications was significantly lower (P = .006); (3) VAS pain score was significantly lower at months 3 and 6, with P = .028 and P = .021, respectively; (4) Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) function score was significantly lower at months 3 and 6, with P = .016 and P = .014, respectively; and (5) postoperative JOA function score was significantly higher at months 3 and 6, with P = .011 and P = .007, respectively. Conclusions: Both percutaneous, endoscopic, large-channel fusion and TLIF had good therapeutic effects in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. However, compared with the latter, the former was more effective, with better comprehensive efficacy and more obvious benefits for patients, so it's worthy of clinical promotion and use.

Background: Odontoid fractures account for 15%-20% of cervical injuries. Although the operation methods vary in different types, the superiority of overall outcomes of the anterior approach (AA) and posterior approach (PA) in treating odontoid fractures still remains controversial. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed comparing AA and PA for these fractures. Methods: The relevant studies were searched in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, China Biological Medicine (CBM), and Wanfang Database from the onset of conception to June 2022. Prospective or retrospective comparative studies on AA and PA for odontoid fractures were screened, referring to fusion rates (primary outcomes), complications, and postoperative mortality rates. A meta-analysis of the primary outcomes and a systematic review of other outcomes were performed; the procedure was conducted with Review Manager 5.3. Results: Twelve articles comrising 452 patients were included, and all publications were retrospective cohort studies. The average postoperative fusion rate was 77.5 ± 17.9% and 91.4 ± 13.5% in AA and PA, respectively, with statistical significance [OR = 0.42 (0.22, 0.80), P = 0.009]. Subgroup analysis showed a difference in fusion rates between AA and PA in the elderly group [OR = 0.16 (0.05, 0.49), P = 0.001]. Five articles referred to postoperative mortality, and the mortality rates of AA (5.0%) and PA (2.3%) showed no statistical difference (P = 0.148). Nine studies referred to complications, with a rate of 9.7%. The incidence of complications in AA and PA groups was comparable (P = 0.338), and the incidence of nonfusion and complications was irrelevant. The prevalent cause of death was myocardial infarction. The time and segmental movement retention of AA were possibly superior to those of PA. Conclusion: AA may be superior in regard to operation time and motion retention. There was no difference in complications and mortality rates between the two approaches. The posterior approach would be preferred in consideration of the fusion rate.

The association between long-term joint exposure to all kinds of ambient air pollutants and the risk of mortality is not known. Our study prospectively assessed the joint associations of various air pollutants with cause-specific and all-cause mortality risk and identified potential modifying factors affecting these associations. A total of 400,259 individuals aged 40-70 years were included in this study. Information on PM10, PM2.5-10, PM2.5, NO2, and NOx was collected. A weighted air pollution score was calculated to assess joint exposure to the above air pollutants. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. During a median of 12.0 years (4,733,495 person-years) of follow-up, 21,612 deaths were recorded, including 7097 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 11,557 deaths from cancer. The adjusted HRs of all-cause mortality were 1.39 (95% CI: 1.29-1.50), 1.86 (95% CI: 1.63-2.13), 1.12 (95% CI: 1.10-1.14), and 1.04 (95% CI: 1.03-1.05) for every 10-ug/m3 increase in PM10, PM2.5, NO2, and NOx, respectively. The adjusted HRs associated with the air pollution score (the highest quintile versus the lowest quintile) were 1.24 (95% CI: 1.19-1.30) for all-cause mortality, 1.33 (95% CI: 1.23-1.43) for cardiovascular mortality, and 1.16 (95% CI: 1.09-1.23) for cancer mortality. Furthermore, we found that the air pollution score was associated with a linear dose-response increase in mortality risk (all P for linearity < 0.001). The findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive assessment of various air pollutants.

YKT6, as a Soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) protein with vesicle trafficking, plays an essential role in the development and progression of tumor. However, the gene of YKT6 has not been fully assessed in pan-cancer studies. We aim to investigate the gene of YKT6 across 33 different types of tumor by using the Cancer Genome Atlas, Gene Expression Omnibus database, and other several kinds of bioinformatic tools. YKT6 is significantly up-regulated in most tumors, and we found that overexpression of YKT6 is positively associated with poor prognosis of overall survival and poor disease-free survival prognosis in several tumors, such as Adrenocortical carcinoma, Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma, Head and Neck squamous cell carcinoma. We also detected distinct associations exist between YKT6 and tumor mutational burden or microsatellite instability with tumors. YKT6 expression was positively related to cancer-associated fibroblasts for TCGA tumors of colon adenocarcinoma and LGG. Furthermore, we discovered a significantly positively correlation between YKT6 expression and endothelial cell in tumors of colon adenocarcinoma, HNSC-HPV+, OV, READ and THCA. While a negative relationship was obtained between YKT6 expression and endothelial cell in KIRC. Moreover, "Syntaxin binding," "SNARE complex," "vesicle fusion" and "DNA replication" are involved in the influence of YKT6 on tumor pathogenesis. Our pan-cancer analysis offers a deep comprehending the gene of YKT6 in tumoeigenesis from viewpoint of clinical tumor samples.

The Western Pacific Ocean (the WPO), as one of the busiest shipping areas in the world, holds a complex water traffic network. In 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) low-sulfur fuel regulations were implemented globally, while the COVID-19 outbreak influenced shipping activities together. This study aimed to assess the combined impact of epidemics and low-sulfur fuel policies on ship emissions, as well as their environmental effects on the WPO. The ship emission model based on the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data was applied to analyze the monthly emission variations during 2018-2020. It was found that the epidemic had obvious diverse influences on the coastal ports in the WPO. Overall, shipping emissions declined by 15 %-30 % in the first half of 2020 compared with those in 2019 due to the COVID-19 lockdown, whereas they rebounded in the second half as a result of trade recovery. The pollutants discharged per unit of cargo by ships rose after the large-range lockdown. China's multiphase domestic emission control areas (DECAs) and the IMO global low-sulfur fuel regulation have greatly reduced SO2 emissions from ships and caused them to "bypass and come back" to save fuel costs around emission control areas from 2018 to 2020. Based on satellite data and land-based measurements, it was found that the air quality over sea water and coastal cities has shown a positive response to changes in ship-emitted NOx and SO2. Our results reveal that changes in shipping emissions during typical periods, depending on their niches in the complex port traffic network, call for further efforts for cleaner fuel oils, optimized ECA and ship lane coordination in the future. Shipping related air pollutions during the later economic recovery also needs to be addressed after international scale standing-by events.

Purpose: To develop predictive models for the intraocular pressure (IOP) of patients undergoing small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedures, measured with a noncontact tonometer (NCT), Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT), and an ocular response analyzer (ORA). Methods: In this prospective study, a total of 104 eyes (-6.23 ± 2.06 diopters) of 52 patients (24.38 ± 4.76 years) undergoing SMILE procedures were included. The intraocular pressure was measured (IOPNCT with NCT, IOPGAT with GAT, and IOPcc and IOPg with ORA) before surgery and at postoperative 6 months. Information on age, preoperative and attempted spherical equivalent (SE), ablation depth, preoperative values and postoperative changes in central corneal thickness (CCT), K1, K2, Km, corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) values was collected in order to predict IOPs. Results: All surgeries were uneventful. At postoperative 6 months, the efficacy and safety index were 1.04 ± 0.15 and 1.08 ± 0.18, respectively. Significant decreases were detected in postoperative IOPNCT, IOPGAT, IOPcc, and IOPg compared to preoperative values (all p < 0.001). No relationship was found between any IOP and ablation depth, attempted SE, and preoperative SE, as well as CCTdifference (all p > 0.05). Predictive models for IOPs were constructed to predict preoperative values, and R 2 values were 67.5% (IOPNCT), 64.5% (IOPGAT), 78.7% (IOPcc), and 82.0% (IOPg). The prediction band of IOPNCT and IOPGAT was 7.4-15.1 mmHg and 8-16 mmHg, respectively. Conclusion: Predictive models for IOP measurements after SMILE procedures can be helpful in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Fish oil is one of the most popular supplements in the UK and other developed countries. However, the relationship between fish oil use and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively examine the association of habitual fish oil supplementation with incident COPD risk and to evaluate potential effect modification by genetic predisposition. METHODS: This study included 484,414 participants (mean and standard deviation [SD] age: 56.5 [8.1] years) from the UK Biobank who completed a touchscreen questionnaire on habitual fish oil supplement use between 2006 and 2010 and were followed up through 2018. Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) with adjustment for sociodemographic and lifestyle behaviours, health conditions, and other potential confounding factors. A weighted genetic risk score (GRS) for COPD was derived from 112 validated single nucleotide polymorphisms. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 9.0 years, 8860 incident COPD events were recorded. A total of 31.4% (152,230) of the study participants reported habitual fish oil supplementation at baseline. Habitual fish oil supplementation was significantly associated with a lower risk of incident COPD (adjusted HR: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.84-0.93). The association with COPD did not differ by GRS strata (P for interaction = 0.880). The results from subgroup and sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that habitual fish oil supplementation is associated with a lower risk of incident COPD, irrespective of genetic predisposition.

Objective: The safety and effectiveness of topical tranexamic acid in spinal surgery has not yet been reached, and further research is needed to confirm it. This study is aimed at detecting the effectiveness and safety on the tranexamic acid in spinal surgery. Methods: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CNKI, and other databases were searched. The search time was from 2016 to 2019. All randomized controlled trials comparing the topical tranexamic acid group and the control group were collected. The experimental group used topical application. Tranexamic acid was used to treat bleeding after spinal surgery. The control group was no tranexamic acid or isotonic saline. The total bleeding, blood transfusion rate, and the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis were compared between the two groups. Rev Man 5.2.0 software was used for meta-analysis. Results: A total of 8 randomized controlled trials were included, including 884 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the total bleeding volume of the tranexamic acid group was lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant weighted mean difference ((WMD) = -360.27 mL, 95% confidence interval (CI) (-412.68, -307.87) mL, P < 0.00001). The blood transfusion rate in the tranexamic acid group was lower than that in the control group (odds ratio (OR) = 0.22, 95% CI (0.14, 0.33), P < 0.00001). There was no significant difference in the incidence of deep vein thrombosis between the two groups: OR = 1.48, 95% CI (0.41, 5.34), P = 0.55. Conclusion: Tranexamic acid can significantly reduce perioperative total blood loss, intraoperative blood loss, and blood transfusion rate during spinal surgery but has no significant effect on blood transfusion and thrombosis.

Elemental carbon (EC) from various sources contains different sub-fractions with different properties; however, this variability poses several challenges for the accurate assessment of EC emission inventory. EC is defined using thermo-optical analysis (TOA), and its different fractions have different maturation and formation pathways. High- and low-maturity ECs have similar detection signals to those of Soot-EC and Char-EC in TOA. The emission characteristics of Soot-EC and Char-EC were affected by fuel composition and combustion temperatures. Biomass combustion generated more Char-EC than coal combustion, resulting in lower Soot-EC to Char-EC ratios. Soot-EC emissions always increased with an increasing temperature. Char-EC emissions increased with an increasing temperature at 300-900 °C in biomass combustion and decreased in coal combustion when the temperature was >600 °C, suggesting that the two ECs have different formation pathways. Time-resolved analyses of organic carbon (OC), EC, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons showed that Char-EC was preferentially generated in the ignition stage with the rapid emission of OC through direct conversion of OC, whereas Soot-EC was preferentially generated during the flaming stage through gas-phase polymerization of small molecules generated from the decomposition of OC.

Exposure to ambient ultrafine black carbon (uBC, with aerodynamic diameter less than 100 nm) is associated with many neurodegenerative diseases. Oxidative stress is the predominantly reported neurotoxic effects caused by uBC exposure. Mitochondrion is responsible for production of majority of ROS in cells and mitochondrial dysfunction is closely related to adverse nervous outcomes. Mitophagy is an important cellular process to eliminate dysfunctional or damaged mitochondria. However, the mechanisms that modulate mitophagy and mitochondrial dysfunction initiated by uBC remain to be elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate how mitochondrial oxidative stress regulated mitochondrial dysfunction and mitophagy in human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) after uBC treatment. RNA interference was further applied to explore the roles of mitophagy in mitochondrial dysfunction. We found uBC triggered cell apoptosis via ROS-mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. The uBC also caused serious mitochondrial damage and respiratory dysfunction, indicated by the abnormalities in mitochondrial division and fusion related proteins, decreased mitochondria number and ATP level. Increased PTEN induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) and Parkin protein levels and the autolysosome numbers suggested uBC could promote Pink1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy process in SH-SY5Y cells. Mitophagy inhibition could reserve mitochondria number and ATP activity, but not fusion and division related protein levels in SH-SY5Y cells exposed to uBC. Administration of a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant (mitoquinone) significantly eliminated uBC caused apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction and mitophagy. Our data suggested mitochondrial oxidative stress regulated uBC induced mitochondrial dysfunction and PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy. PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy probably participated in regulating uBC caused mitochondrial dysfunction but not by controlling mitochondrial fusion and division related proteins. Our results may provide some new insights and evidences to understand the mechanisms of neurotoxicity induced by uBC.

Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a worldwide environmental problem and is posing a serious threat to human health. Until now, the molecular toxicological mechanisms and the crucial toxic components of PM2.5 remain to be clarified. This study investigated the whole transcriptomic changes in THP-1 derived macrophages treated with different types of PM2.5 extracts using RNA sequencing technique. Bioinformatics analyses covering biological functions, signal pathways, protein networks and node genes were performed to explore the candidate pathways and critical genes, and to find the potential molecular mechanisms. Results of Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway (KEGG), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks revealed that water extracts (WEs) of PM2.5 obviously influenced genes and molecular pathways responded to oxidative stress and inflammation. Dichloromethane extracts (DEs) specifically affected genes and signal cascades related to cell cycle progress process. Furthermore, compared with WEs collected in heating season, non-heating season WEs induced much higher expression levels of Ca-associated genes (including phosphodiesterase 4B and cyclooxygenase-2), which may consequently result in more severe inflammatory responses. While, for DEs exposure, the heating season (DH) group showed extensive induction of deferentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to cell cycle pathway, which may be caused by the higher polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents in DH samples than those from non-heating season. In conclusion, the oxidative stress and inflammation response are closely correlated with cellular responses in THP-1 derived macrophages induced by water soluble components of PM2.5, and cell cycle dysregulation may play an important role in biological effects induced by organic components. The different transcriptomic changes induced by seasonal PM2.5 extracts may partially depend on the contents of PAHs and metal ions, respectively.

The current study presents two patients who lived in a rural family with close contact and suffered from rapidly progressive pneumonia. Chest computed tomography images and lymphocytopenia indicated the possibility of COVID-19 infection, but antibody and nucleic acid tests excluded this possibility. Negative results were obtained from corresponding tests for pneumococcal, adenovirus, fungal and legionella infection. Metagenomics analysis and subsequent antibody tests confirmed mycoplasma pneumonia. After treating with moxifloxacin, both patients recovered well and left the hospital. In terms of complicated infectious disease, consideration of atypical pathogens and medical and epidemiological history were important for differential diagnosis of COVID-19; metagenomics analysis was useful to provide direct references for diagnosis.

Heavy fuel oil (HFO) accounts for approximately 80% of the fuel consumption of ocean-going ships in the world. Multiple toxic species are found in HFO exhaust, however, carbonaceous substances emitted from low-speed marine engine exhaust at different operating loads have not been thoroughly addressed. Therefore, a bench test for a low-speed marine engine with HFO fuel under different operating modes was carried out in this study. Emission factors and characteristics of CO2, CO, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), as well as OC and EC fragments, organic matters of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are given and discussed. Combined with the correlation analysis results among the measured species and engine technical parameters, the formation processes and influence factors of carbonaceous components are also inferred in this study. Besides, together with OC to EC ratio, n-alkanes to PAHs ratio, etc., EC1 to soot-EC ratio in PM can be considered as tracer characteristic of high-sulfur-content HFO ship distinguished from diesel fuel ships. Profiles of n-alkanes and PAHs in PM can be used to distinguish shipping emission source from other combustion sources. Moreover, characteristics of carbonaceous components in size-segregated particles are also discussed, including OC, EC, OC and EC fragments, as well as organic matters. Results show that most of the particle mass, OC, EC, and organic matters are concentrated in fine particles with size of less than 1.1 µm, indicating the significance of ultrafine particles. Formation processes of OC and EC fragments, EC1 and soot-EC are also deduced and proved combined with the characteristics of OC and EC fragments, organic matters, and especially PAHs. Besides, the large variations of OC to EC ratios and speciated profiles of n-alkanes and PAHs in different particle size bins indicate that particle size should be considered when they are used as characteristic tracer in source apportionment studies.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), emitted during biomass combustion, are carcinogenic chemicals. The association between indoor biomass burning and PCDD/Fs inhalation exposure levels is still poorly understood. This study first reports direct measurement of personal exposure to PCDD/Fs in real-world households with wood combustion. In homes where biomass burning is used for cooking, toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) PCDD/Fs concentrations were found to be 545 ± 251 fg I-TEQ/m3 in kitchens, with levels of 4.5-, 6.9-, and 13.3-fold higher than those in living rooms (122 ± 92 fg I-TEQ/m3), bedrooms (79 ± 27 fg I-TEQ/m3), and ambient air (41 ± 15 fg I-TEQ/m3), respectively. PCDD/Fs exposure levels in populations using biomass fuels for cooking (353 ± 110 fg I-TEQ/m3) were 4.3-fold higher than those in the control groups (82 ± 32 fg I-TEQ/m3). Additionally, the average cancer risks for biomass cooking person were approximately 3.1-fold higher than those in factory workers. Overall, residents of household that use biomass fuels for cooking have the highest known risk of PCDD/Fs exposure. These results highlight that aiming to mitigate the PCDD/Fs exposure risk in the general population, the focus of dioxin emission source control measures should shift from industrial sectors to residential biomass combustion.

Although melatonin has been extensively studied in animal reproduction, the mechanism of melatonin in puberty remains elusive. This study was designed to explore the effect of intraperitoneal administration of melatonin on puberty onset in female mice. The injection of melatonin into postnatal days 10 mice at a dose of 15 mg/kg accelerated the puberty onset in mice. Mechanistically, there was no difference in physical growth and serum Leptin levels after melatonin administration. Meanwhile, the serum levels of reproductive hormones involved in hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, such as FSH and estrogen level in serum were increased. The mRNA levels of GnRH and GnRHr were not affected by melatonin, while the expressions of FSHß in pituitary and Cyp19a1 in ovary were significantly up-regulated. In addition, melatonin still promoted FSH synthesis after ovariectomy. Furthermore, the enhanced activity of ERK1/2 signaling verified that the expression of FSHß increased in pituitary. We confirmed that melatonin promoted the FSH synthesis in pituitary, thereby increased serum estrogen levels and ultimately accelerated puberty onset. However, these effects of melatonin may be pharmacological due to the high dose. This study would help us to understand the functions of melatonin in pubertal regulation comprehensively.

Elaborating the spatiotemporal variations and dynamic mechanisms of black carbon (BC) in coastal seas, the geographically pivotal intermediate zones that link the terrestrial and open oceanic ecosystems, will contribute significantly to refine the regional and global BC geochemistry. In this study, we implemented a large spatial-scale and multiseason and -layer seawater sampling campaign in high BC emission influenced coastal China seas (Bohai Sea and Northern Yellow Sea) and quantified the thermal/optical reflectance-based particulate BC (PBC) and benzene polycarboxylic acids-based dissolved BC (DBC). We found that the climate and its associated hydrological effects (including the intensive resuspension and coastal current transport) largely regulate both PBC and DBC spatiotemporal variations and dynamics. In combination with previous work on upstream rivers and downstream open ocean, a significant and continuous decrease in the DBC aromatic condensation was observed along the river-to-ocean continuum, probably due to the increment of the photochemical degradation during the waterborne transport. Based on our DBC methodological development, i.e., the determination and subsequent inclusion of the nitrated BC molecular markers, the magnitudes of the current global DBC fluxes and pools were updated. After the update, the DBC fluxes from atmospheric deposition and riverine delivery were estimated at rates of 4.3 and 66.3 Tg yr-1, respectively, and the global oceanic DBC pool was approximately 36 Gt. This update will greatly assist in constructing a more robust regional and global DBC and BC cycling and budgets.
