RESUMO

In this study, a newly isolated Pediococcus acidilactici F3 was used as probiotic starter for producing fermented soymilk to enhance antioxidant properties with high antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens. The objectives of this study were to investigate optimized fermentation parameters of soymilk for enhancing antioxidant property by P. acidilactici F3 and to assess the dynamic antimicrobial activity of the fermented soymilk during co-culturing against candidate food-borne pathogens. Based on central composite design (CCD) methodology, the maximum predicted percentage of antioxidant activity was 78.9% DPPH inhibition. After model validation by a 2D contour plot, more suitable optimum parameters were adjusted to be 2% (v/v) inoculum and 2.5 g/L glucose incubated at 30 °C for 18 h. These parameters could provide the comparable maximum percentage of antioxidant activity at 74.5 ± 1.2% DPPH inhibition, which was up to a 23% increase compared to that of non-fermented soymilk. During 20 days of storage at 4 °C, antioxidant activities and viable cells of the fermented soymilk were stable while phenolic and organic contents were slightly increased. Interestingly, the fermented soymilk completely inhibited food-borne pathogens, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 13311, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 during the co-culture incubation. Results showed that the soymilk fermented by P. acidilactici F3 may be one of the alternative functional foods enriched in probiotics, and the antioxidation and antimicrobial activities may retain nutritional values and provide health benefits to consumers with high confidence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The facial artery is an important blood vessel responsible for supplying the anterior face. Understanding the branching patterns of the facial artery plays a crucial role in various medical specialties such as plastic surgery, dermatology, and oncology. This knowledge contributes to improving the success rate of facial reconstruction and aesthetic procedures. However, debate continues regarding the classification of facial artery branching patterns in the existing literature. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive anatomical study, in which we dissected 102 facial arteries from 52 embalmed and formaldehyde-fixed Vietnamese cadavers at the Anatomy Department, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. RESULTS: Our investigation revealed eight distinct termination points and identified 35 combinations of branching patterns, including seven arterial branching patterns. These termination points included the inferior labial artery, superior labial artery, inferior alar artery, lateral nasal artery, angular artery typical, angular artery running along the lower border of the orbicularis oculi muscle, forehead branch, duplex, and short course (hypoplastic). Notably, the branching patterns of the facial artery displayed marked asymmetry between the left and right sides within the same cadaver. CONCLUSION: The considerable variation observed in the branching pattern and termination points of the facial artery makes it challenging to establish a definitive classification system for this vessel. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an anatomical map summarizing the major measurements and geometric features of the facial artery. Surgeons and medical professionals involved in facial surgery and procedures must consider the detailed anatomy and relative positioning of the facial artery to minimize the risk of unexpected complications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Limited knowledge on burden and quality of life (QoL) among cancer caregivers is available in low and middle income countries. This study aims to investigate the QoL, levels of burden, and their associations among Vietnamese cancer caregivers. METHODS: This study was conducted across three hospitals in Vietnam. 348 caregivers were recruited from January to June 2021. Data were collected by using socio-demographic questionnaires, the Zarit Burden Interview scale, and Caregiver Qol Cancer. The association between QoL and burden was analyzed by using multivariate linear regression. RESULTS: Older age (p = 0.03), employed (p = 0.01), and care more than 40 h (p = 0.007) were associated with a higher burden, respectively. QoL of financial concern had the lowest score (mean = 48.03, SD = 28.87), compared to the other subscale. Caregivers who had pre-existing health conditions, unstable work, spent more than 40 h per week, and took care dependent cancer patients were associated with a lower overall QoL score. Comparing to caregivers of no burden, those of mild burden had a lower QoL score by 10.70; while those of mild severe burden had the worse QoL (lower by 23.80 scores). CONCLUSIONS: Perceptional burden among caregivers is associated with QoL. Further policies are recommended to protect cancer caregivers, to alleviate the caregiving burden, and thus to improve the overall QoL.

RESUMO

Shortening the aging duration and enhancing the functional components of garlic present significant technical challenges that need to be addressed. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the potential role of pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment, a novel nonthermal food processing method, in promoting and enhancing the functional attributes of aged garlic. Our results showed that 2-4 kV/cm PEF pretreatment increased S-allyl cysteine (SAC), total polyphenol (TPC), and flavonoid contents (TFC) compared with un-pretreated garlic during aging. The browning and texture-softening were also significantly improved during processing time, though the latter showed no significant difference from the eighth day to the end of the aging process. The principal component analysis results showed that PEF positively affects the SAC and TFC formations without adverse effects. Among the PEF pretreatments, 3 kV/cm is the most effective in enhancing functional component production compared with the other PEF pretreatments. Therefore, PEF pretreatment is a time-saving process that promotes and enhances the functionality of aged garlic.

RESUMO

Exposure to cadmium may increase risk of urolithiasis, but the results remain inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to access the association between cadmium exposure and urolithiasis. We searched Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane Central for studies. The primary outcome was the incidence of urolithiasis compared to reference groups. We used relative risk as the summary effect measure. This meta-analysis included eight observational studies and divided into 39 study populations. Among 63,051 subjects, 5018 (7.96%) individuals had urolithiasis. The results indicated that people with an increment of 0.1 µg/g creatinine in urinary cadmium had a 2% increased risk of urolithiasis (pooled relative risk [RR], 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.03) and there is no difference in the risk of urolithiasis in high and low cadmium exposure levels. Meanwhile, people with an increment of 0.1 µg/L in urinary cadmium had a 4% increased risk of urolithiasis (pooled RR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.02-1.07). Our findings also showed similar associations in both sex, different region (Sweden, China, and Thailand), general and occupational population. The results indicate that cadmium exposure was significantly associated with an elevated risk of urolithiasis. Therefore, it is imperative to take steps to minimize cadmium exposure.

RESUMO

SCOPE: Particulate matter (PM) contains toxic organic matter and heavy metals that enter the entire body through blood flow and may cause mortality. Ganoderma formosanum mycelium, a valuable traditional Chinese medicine that has been used since ancient times, contains various active ingredients that can effectively impede inflammatory responses on murine alveolar macrophages induced by PM particles. METHODS AND RESULTS: An experimental study assessing the effect of G. formosanum mycelium extract's water fraction (WA) on PM-exposed murine alveolar macrophages using ROS measurement shows that WA reduces intracellular ROS by 12% and increases cell viability by 16% when induced by PM particles. According to RNA-Sequencing, western blotting, and real-time qPCR are conducted to analyze the metabolic pathway. The WA reduces the protein ratio in p-NF-κB/NF-κB by 18% and decreases the expression of inflammatory genes, including IL-1ß by 38%, IL-6 by 29%, and TNF-α by 19%. Finally, the identification of seven types of anti-inflammatory compounds in the WA fraction is achieved through UHPLC-ESI-Orbitrap-Elite-MS/MS analysis. These compounds include anti-inflammatory compounds, namely thiamine, adenosine 5'-monophosphate, pipecolic acid, L-pyroglutamic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine, D-mannitol, and L-malic acid. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that the WA has the potential to alleviate the PM -induced damage in alveolar macrophages, demonstrating its anti-inflammatory properties.

RESUMO

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a promising material for the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soils. However, the effects of ZVI added during flooding or drainage processes on cadmium (Cd) retention remain unclear. Herein, Cd-contaminated paddy soil was incubated for 40 days of flooding and then for 15 days of drainage, and the underlying mechanisms of Cd immobilization coupled with Fe/S/N redox processes were investigated. The addition of ZVI to the flooding process was more conducive to Cd immobilization. Less potential available Cd was detected by adding ZVI before flooding, which may be due to the increase in paddy soil pH and newly formed secondary Fe minerals. Moreover, the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals promoted the release of soil colloids, thereby increasing significantly the surface sites and causing Cd immobilization. Additionally, the addition of ZVI before flooding played a vital role in Cd retention after soil drainage. In contrast, the addition of ZVI in the drainage phase was not conducive to Cd retention, which might be due to the rapid decrease in soil pH that inhibited Cd adsorption and further immobilization on soil surfaces. The findings of this study demonstrated that Cd availability in paddy soil was largely reduced by adding ZVI during the flooding period and provide a novel insight into the mechanisms of ZVI remediation in Cd-contaminated paddy soils.

RESUMO

Clarithromycin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat Helicobacter pylori infections. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises caution before prescribing clarithromycin to patients with cardiac diseases. This study aimed to evaluate cardiac events after anti-H pylori treatment in patients with coronary artery disease. A retrospective 5-year study was conducted on outpatients who received anti-H pylori therapy. Among the 7855 patients receiving therapy, 228 patients (2.9%) underwent angiography with coronary artery disease before therapy, and 193 patients received clarithromycin. Clarithromycin users seemed not to be at risk for cardiac events as compared with non-clarithromycin users at 3 months (4.7% vs 2.9%, P = .63) and 1 year (10.9% vs 5.7%, P = .35). Neither life-threatening dysrhythmia nor cardiac death was noted. The risk factors for cardiac events within 3 months after therapy were smoker (OR:5.38, 95% CI:1.39-20.78), and events within 1 year were smoker (OR:3.8, 95% CI:1.41-10.22), and diabetes mellitus (OR:5.68, 95% CI:1.9-16.98). Among patients with coronary artery disease who received anti-H pylori therapy, short-term cardiac events did not increase in clarithromycin users but should be considered in diabetic and smoking patients.

RESUMO

A total of 172 consecutive patients with sympathetic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation who received cryoballoon (CB) ablation from 2020 to 2021 were retrospectively analyzed in this study. Catheter coaxiality and anatomic features of pulmonary veins (PVs) on computed tomography images were explored by several parameters and their influence on the cryoablation results was then analyzed. The rate of incomplete CB occlusion was significantly higher for inferior than superior PVs. A multivariate analysis revealed that a short distance (<6.3 mm) from PV ostium to first branch (D-PVB) and a small angle (<32.5°) of first branch were independent predict factors for an incomplete CB occlusion in right inferior PVs (RIPVs). A combination of D-PVB and angle of first branch could elevate the predictor value for an incomplete balloon occlusion with a sensitivity of 0.85 and specificity of 1.0 for RIPVs. For PVs with a perfect balloon occlusion, the best catheter coaxiality was observed in right superior PV while the worst catheter coaxiality was observed in RIPV. A more aggressive catheter manipulation with a "7" or "reverse-U" shape of long sheath could obtain a better catheter coaxiality compared with conventional manipulation strategy for RIPVs. In Conclusion, a short D-PVB and a small angle of first branch were independent predict factors for an incomplete CB occlusion in RIPVs. A more aggressive catheter manipulation strategy was recommended to achieve a complete balloon occlusion and a better catheter coaxiality for RIPVs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational asbestos exposure has been extensively linked to various cancers, with ongoing debates regarding its association with kidney cancer. This study aims to investigate the correlation between occupational asbestos exposure and kidney cancer incidence. Additionally, potential influencing factors are analyzed to enhance the comprehension of the relationship between asbestos exposure and kidney cancer. RECENT FINDING: While asbestos has established strong associations with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer, its connection to other malignancies such as gastric, colorectal, and kidney cancers remains under scrutiny. The current study presents mixed opinions on the relationship between asbestos exposure and kidney cancer. Our analysis revealed a potential association between asbestos exposure and the incidence of kidney cancer. Notably, among different types of asbestos, exposure to amphibole appeared to be particularly linked to a higher incident risk of kidney cancer.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of polysaccharides extracted from unripe Carica papaya L. (papaya) fruit. Three papaya polysaccharide (PP) fractions, namely PP-1, PP-2, and PP-3, with molecular weights of 2252, 2448, and 3741 kDa, containing abundant xylose, galacturonic acid, and mannose constituents, respectively, were obtained using diethylaminoethyl-Sepharose™ anion exchange chromatography. The antioxidant capacity of the PPs, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, ferrous ion-chelating assay, and reducing power assay revealed that the PP-3 fraction had the highest antioxidant activity, with an EC50 (the concentration for 50% of the maximal effect) of 0.96 mg/mL, EC50 of 0.10 mg/mL, and Abs700 nm of 1.581 for the hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, ferrous ion-chelating assay, and reducing power assay, respectively. In addition, PP-3 significantly decreased reactive oxygen species production by 45.3%, NF-κB activation by 32.0%, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 generation by 33.5% and 34.4%, respectively, in H2O2-induced human epidermal keratinocytes. PP-3 exerts potent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects; thus, it is a potential biofunctional ingredient in the cosmetic industry.

RESUMO

Repeated-batch fermentation with fungal mycelia immobilized in plastic composite support (PCS) eliminates the lag phase during fermentation and improves metabolite productivity. The strategy is implemented herein, and a novel modified PCS is developed to enhance exopolysaccharide (EPS) production from the medicinal fungus Cordyceps militaris. A modified PCS (SYE + PCS) was made by compositing polypropylene (PP) with a nutrient mixture containing soybean hull, peptone, yeast extract, and minerals (SYE+). The use of SYE + PCS has consistent cell productivity throughout the multiple fermentation cycles, which resulted in a more higher cell productivity after second batch compared to unmodified PCS. The cell grown on SYE + PCS also generates a higher yield of EPS (3.36, 6.93, and 5.72 g/L in the first, second, and third fermentation cycles, respectively) up to three-fold higher than the cell immobilized on unmodified PCS. It is also worth noting that the EPS from mycelium grown on SYE + PCS contains up to 2.3-fold higher cordycepin than those on unmodified PCS. The presence of nutrients in SYE + PCS also affects the hydrophobicity and surface roughness of the PC, improving mycelial cell adhesion. This study also provides a preliminary antioxidant activity assessment of EPS from immobilized C. militaris grown with SYE + PCS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is a very aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis. As surgery is the only curative therapy, preoperative evaluation of the tumor extent is essential for surgical planning. Although high-quality image modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have been used extensively in preoperative evaluation, the accuracy is low. To obtain precise localization of tumor spread arising from the hilar region preoperatively, the development of an acceptable imaging modality is still an unmet need. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old female presented to our emergency department with jaundice, abdominal pain, and fever. Initially, she was treated for cholangitis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with the cholangiogram showed long segment filling defect in the common hepatic duct with dilatation of bilateral intrahepatic ducts. Transpapillary biopsy was performed, and the pathology suggested intraductal papillary neoplasm with high-grade dysplasia. After treatment of cholangitis, contrasted-enhanced computed tomography revealed a hilar lesion with undetermined Bismuth-Corlette classification. SpyGlass cholangioscopy showed that the lesion involved the confluence of the common hepatic duct with one skip lesion in the posterior branch of the right intrahepatic duct, which was not detected by previous image modalities. The surgical plan was modified from extended left hepatectomy to extended right hepatectomy. The final diagnosis was hilar CC, pT2aN0M0. The patient has remained disease-free for more than 3 years. CONCLUSION: SpyGlass cholangioscopy may have a role in precision localization of hilar CC to provide surgeons with more information before the operation.

RESUMO

Rhizopus oligosporus was utilized in the solid-state fermentation of Chenopodiumformosanumsprouts (FCS) in a bioreactor. Subsequently, the antioxidant activity of food proteins derived from FCS was investigated. Results showed that glycine-rich peptide (GGGGGKP, G-rich peptide), identified from the <2 kDa FCS proteins, had antioxidant values. According to SwissADME, AllerTOP, ToxinPred, and BIOPEP-UWM analyses, G-rich peptide was identified as safe, non-toxic, and non-allergenic. Afterward, the peptide was examined using in silico and in vitro studies to evaluate its potential alleviating oxidative stress caused by particulate matter. This study proposed plausible mechanisms that involve the binding of G-rich peptide which inhibited phosphorylation of the v-rel avian reticuloendotheliosis viral oncogene homologA(RELA) subunit onNF-κB pathway. The inhibition then resulted in down regulation of NF-κB transcription and genetic expression of inflammatory responses. These findings suggested that G-rich peptide from FCS proteins can potentially alleviate oxidative stress.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increase in reports of perioral vascular complications resulting from filler injections, such as necrosis of the lip or alar rim, occlusion, and in severe cases, blindness. Conversely, the use of perioral arterial flaps is becoming more prevalent in the treatment of cleft lips, cancer, and trauma. A thorough understanding of perioral arteries is essential to minimize complications and maximize the success of these flaps. However, the course of the facial artery (FA) in the perioral region remains incompletely understood. The aim of this study was to describe the variations of the FA in the perioral region. METHODS: We dissected 52 embalmed and formaldehyde-fixed Vietnamese cadavers. We then studied the size and distribution of perioral arteries in 102 specimens. RESULTS: The superior labial artery (SLA) was the most common branch, occurring in 87.25% of cadavers, followed by the inferior labial artery (ILA) at 78.43%. The SLA primarily originated above the mouth corner (cheilion), accounting for 91.01% of cases, and predominantly exhibited a tortuous course within the submucosa (78.65%). The ILA's branching pattern varied, but it was primarily located below the cheilion (91.25%). The ILA also followed a twisted path, generally within the submucosa. The ILA exhibited two patterns: the typical pattern, distributed at the vermilion border of the lower lip (8.82%), and the horizontal labiomental artery pattern, which ran horizontally in the middle of the lower lip area (69.61%). At their origin, the SLA and ILA had average external diameters of 1.29 mm and 1.28 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION: Numerous anatomical variations in the FA in the perioral region were found. A detailed anatomic description, suggested landmarks, and angiography before the procedure will be useful to help doctors avoid complications.

RESUMO

Black garlic (BG) is an emerging derivative of fresh garlic with enhanced nutritional properties. This study aimed to develop functional BG products with good consumer acceptance. To this end, BG was treated with freezing (F-BG), ultrasound (U-BG), and HHP (H-BG) to assess its sensory and functional properties. The results showed that F-BG and H-BG had higher S-allyl-cysteine (SAC), polyphenol, and flavonoid contents than BG. H-BG and F-BG displayed the best sensory quality after 18 days of aging, while 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), SAC, and polyphenols were identified as the most influential sensory parameters. Moreover, the F-BG and H-BG groups achieved optimal taste after 18 days, as opposed to untreated BG, which needed more than 24 days. Therefore, the proposed approaches significantly reduced the processing time while enhancing the physical, sensory, and functional properties of BG. In conclusion, freezing and HHP techniques may be considered promising pretreatments to develop BG products with good functional and sensory properties.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Diagnosing pancreatic heterotopia (PH) is challenging, because it is a rare congenital anomaly. We report the case of a 66-year-old man who presented with ileus and jejunal PH diagnosed using single-balloon enteroscopy. Reviewing 178 cases of small intestinal PH in the literature showed that (1) PH mostly occurred at the duodenum (61.8%), followed by the jejunum (22.5%) and ileum (14.6%); (2) patients with ileal PH were younger (mean, 40.7 vs 54.6 years; P < 0.001), while those with jejunal PH were older (mean, 59.5 vs 51.7 years; P = 0.006); (3) most patients with jejunal PH were females, while those with duodenal or ileal PH were predominantly males (M:F = 0.8:1 vs 2.5:1; P = 0.003); (4) asymptomatic cases were rare (15.2% vs 83.4% in small and nonsmall bowel, respectively); (5) most patients with ileal PH presented with bleeding (61.5%), while the remaining had abdominal pain (42.8%); (6) emergent operation was performed in 11 cases (6.2%), mainly at the jejunum (12.5%) and Meckel's diverticulum (25%); and (7) Heinrich's classification may be inconclusive. Enteroscopy was performed in only 6 cases (3.4%), and earlier diagnosis and further minimally invasive procedures could have been achieved with enteroscopy.

RESUMO

Arsenic (As) and its compounds are widely used in many applications. Long-term exposure to As can cause acute and chronic poisoning. In severe cases, it can lead to adverse effects, such as gene mutation, cell cancer and fetal malformation. The objective of this study was to accurately estimate As exposure frequency and time. Quantitative analysis of As in single hairs obtained from APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia) patients treated with As2O3 was performed by LA-ICP-MS. An informative As concentration distribution profile of single hair was applied to estimate the As exposure frequency and time. As exposure frequency was estimated according to the number of As concentration peaks. As exposure time was estimated according to the hair growth length in combination with the hair growth rate. The validation results demonstrate that this method was more efficient than the traditional method; compared with the traditional method, which provides estimates in months, our model shortened the As exposure time estimate to the range of a few days, which considerably improved the inference accuracy. Therefore, these results can be used for forensic toxicology studies, environmental exposure monitoring, etc.
