RESUMO

Zeolites and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are crystalline aluminosilicates with porous structure, which are closely linked with nanomaterials. They are characterized by enhanced ion exchange capacity, physical-chemical stability, thermal stability and biocompatibility, making them a promising material for dental applications. This review aimed to provide an overview of the application of zeolites and ZIFs in dentistry. The common zeolite compounds for dental application include silver zeolite, zinc zeolite, calcium zeolite and strontium zeolite. The common ZIFs for dental application include ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Zeolites and ZIFs have been employed in various areas of dentistry, such as restorative dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, implantology, periodontics, orthodontics and oral surgery. In restorative dentistry, zeolites and ZIFs are used as antimicrobial additives in dental adhesives and restorative materials. In endodontics, zeolites are used in root-end fillings, root canal irritants, root canal sealers and bone matrix scaffolds for peri-apical diseases. In prosthodontics, zeolites can be incorporated into denture bases, tissue conditioners, soft denture liners and dental prostheses. In implantology, zeolites and ZIFs are applied in dental implants, bone graft materials, bone adhesive hydrogels, drug delivery systems and electrospinning. In periodontics, zeolites can be applied as antibacterial agents for deep periodontal pockets, while ZIFs can be embedded in guided tissue regeneration membranes and guided bone regeneration membranes. In orthodontics, zeolites can be applied in orthodontic appliances. Additionally, for oral surgery, zeolites can be used in oral cancer diagnostic marker membranes, maxillofacial prosthesis silicone elastomer and tooth extraction medicines, while ZIFs can be incorporated to osteogenic glue or used as a carrier for antitumour drugs. In summary, zeolites have a broad application in dentistry and are receiving more attention from clinicians and researchers.

The purpose of the study is to develop a novel peptide for caries management. Gallic-Acid-Polyphemusin-I (GAPI) was synthesised by grafting Polyphemusin I (PI) and gallic acid (GA). Biocompatibility was evaluated using a Cell Counting Kit-8 Assay. Antimicrobial properties were assessed using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC). The bacterial and fungal morphology after GAPI treatment was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The architecture of a consortium biofilm consisting of Streptococcus mutans, Lacticaseibacillus casei and Candida albicans was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The growth kinetics of the biofilm was examined using a propidium monoazide-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The surface and calcium-to-phosphorus molar ratio of GAPI-treated enamel after pH cycling were examined with SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Enamel crystal characteristics were analysed using X-ray diffraction. Lesion depths representing the enamel's mineral loss were assessed using micro-computed tomography. The MIC of GAPI against S. mutans, L. casei and C. albicans were 40 µM, 40 µM and 20 µM, respectively. GAPI destroyed the biofilm's three-dimensional structure and inhibited the growth of the biofilm. SEM showed that enamel treated with GAPI had a relatively smooth surface compared to that treated with water. The calcium-to-phosphorus molar ratio of enamel treated with GAPI was higher than that of the control. The lesion depths and mineral loss of the GAPI-treated enamel were less than the control. The crystallinity of the GAPI-treated enamel was higher than the control. This study developed a biocompatible, mineralising and antimicrobial peptide GAPI, which may have potential as an anti-caries agent.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which contribute significantly to global morbidity, are largely preventable through behavioral changes. As with other NCDs, periodontitis is associated with modifiable risk factors such as smoking and stress and is linked to multiple adverse health outcomes through a shared pathway of chronic systemic inflammation. While the health benefits of physical activity have been widely promoted in public health and extensively studied for other systemic conditions, its impact on periodontal health has only recently started to gain attention. This article critically evaluates the current literature on the relationship between physical activity and periodontitis. While cross-sectional studies have shown an inverse association between physical activity levels and periodontitis risk in the general population, clinical oral health surveys of elite athletes with high levels of physical activity have nonetheless revealed poor periodontal conditions. Although causality has not been determined, physical activity could positively impact periodontitis directly, by reducing inflammatory biomarkers, and indirectly, through its modulatory effects on insulin sensitivity, obesity, bone density, stress, and other health promoting behaviors. Given the importance of risk factor control during initial periodontal therapy, understanding the role of physical activity as a potential behavioral risk modifier is paramount. The findings of this review provide an evidence-based overview of how physical activity could influence periodontitis. There is a need for longitudinal cohort studies to verify the temporality of the reported associations and exclude confounders, while interventions are needed to assess the efficacy of physical activity on periodontal treatment outcomes.

A novel antimicrobial peptide, GAPI, has been developed recently by grafting gallic acid (GA) to polyphemusin I (PI). The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of GAPI on common oral pathogens. This laboratory study used minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentrations to assess the antimicrobial properties of GAPI against common oral pathogens. Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the bacterial morphology both before and after GAPI treatment. The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration ranged from 20 µM (Lactobacillus rhamnosus) to 320 µM (Porphyromonas gingivalis), whereas the minimum bactericidal concentration ranged from 80 µM (Lactobacillus acidophilus) to 640 µM (Actinomyces naeslundii, Enterococcus faecalis, and Porphyromonas gingivalis). Transmission electron microscopy showed abnormal curvature of cell membranes, irregular cell shapes, leakage of cytoplasmic content, and disruption of cytoplasmic membranes and cell walls. In conclusion, the GAPI antimicrobial peptide is antibacterial to common oral pathogens, with the potential to be used to manage oral infections.

Diet, nutrition, and oral health are closely linked. Malnutrition is a challenging health concern in older adults that is associated with physical decline affecting their daily activities and quality of life. The aim of this review is to provide an evidence-based summary of the relationship between diet and nutrition and oral health in older adults and its implications. The World Health Organization has declared healthy ageing a priority of its work on ageing. The American Dental Association confirmed the bidirectional relationship between diet and nutrition and oral health. The literature shows that diet and nutrition are related to oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, tooth wear, and even oral cancer. Insufficient nutritional intake and poor dietary habits increase the risk of oral diseases, such as dental caries, in older adults. On the other hand, in older adults, poor oral conditions such as periodontal disease may induce pain, infection, and tooth loss, affecting nutritional intake. Surveys have shown that older adults, in particular, those in disadvantaged communities, suffered from nutritional deficiencies or imbalances affecting their oral health. In addition, the current literature shows that malnutrition is associated with frailty, hospitalization, mortality, and morbidity. Good oral health and functional dentition are essential to maintain sufficient nutritional intake among older adults and reduce the risk of malnutrition. Therefore, integrating oral health into general health care service in older adults is imperative to improve their nutritional and oral health status to achieve healthy ageing.

The objective of this study was to review the design methods that have been used to create peptides for use in caries management. Two independent researchers systematically reviewed many in vitro studies in which peptides were designed for use in caries management. They assessed the risk of bias in the included studies. This review identified 3592 publications, of which 62 were selected. Forty-seven studies reported 57 antimicrobial peptides. Among them, 31 studies (66%, 31/47) used the template-based design method; 9 studies (19%, 9/47) used the conjugation method; and 7 studies (15%, 7/47) used other methods, such as the synthetic combinatorial technology method, the de novo design method and cyclisation. Ten studies reported mineralising peptides. Seven of these (70%, 7/10) used the template-based design method, two (20%, 2/10) used the de novo design method, and one study (10%, 1/10) used the conjugation method. In addition, five studies developed their own peptides with antimicrobial and mineralising properties. These studies used the conjugation method. Our assessment for the risk of bias in the 62 reviewed studies showed that 44 publications (71%, 44/62) had a medium risk and that 3 publications had a low risk (5%, 3/62). The two most common methods for developing peptides for use in caries management that were used in these studies were the template-based design method and the conjugation method.

Objective: To compare the effects of combined treatment of topical fluoride and semiconductor laser (F&L) with topically using fluoride (F) on remineralization and prevention of enamel caries. Background: There is no agreement on whether semiconductor lasers can promote the effect of topical fluoride on the remineralization and prevention of dental caries. This study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the pooled effect of data from studies that compared the combined use of semiconductor lasers and topical fluorides with the single use of fluoride on remineralization and prevention of caries. Methods: We performed literature search on Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The keywords were as follows: ((diode lasers) OR (diode laser) OR (quantum cascade laser) OR (quantum cascade lasers) OR (Gallium Aluminum Arsenide lasers) OR (Gallium Aluminum Arsenide laser) OR (GaAlAs lasers) OR (GaAlAs Laser) OR (semiconductor laser) OR (semiconductor lasers)) AND ((caries) OR (dental caries) OR (remineralisation) OR (remineralization) OR (demineralization) OR (demineralisation)) AND fluoride. We carried out meta-analysis to compare the microhardness of demineralized enamel, lesion depth (LD), and percent reduction of calcium (Ca%) of sound enamel receiving F&L with F. Results: The search identified nine laboratory studies, which used 445 to 980 nm semiconductor lasers with various fluorides. The standard mean difference of microhardness of demineralized enamel between F&L and F was 1.06 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.12 to 2.00, p = 0.03]. No difference was found in LD (95% CI: -1.63 to 0.10, p = 0.08) and Ca% (95% CI: -0.52 to 1.28, p = 0.40) on sound enamel between the two groups. Conclusions: Semiconductor lasers enhance the effect of fluoride on remineralizing but not on preventing enamel caries. Moreover, substantial heterogeneity was found among the studies, and the results should be interpreted cautiously.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antibiofilm and remineralising effects of the dual-action peptide GA-KR12 on artificial enamel caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enamel blocks with artificial caries were treated with sterilised deionised water as control or GA-KR12. The blocks underwent biochemical cycling with Streptococcus mutans for 3 weeks. The architecture, viability, and growth kinetics of the biofilm were determined, respectively, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy, and quantitative (culture colony-forming units, CFUs). The mineral loss, calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, surface morphology, and crystal characteristics of the enamel surface were determined, respectively, using micro-computed tomography, energy dispersive spectroscopy, SEM, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). RESULTS: SEM showed confluent growth of S. mutans in the control group but not in the GA-KR12-treated group. The dead-to-live ratios of the control and GA-KR12-treated groups were 0.42 ± 0.05 and 0.81 ± 0.08, respectively (p < 0.001). The log CFUs of the control and GA-KR12-treated groups were 8.15 ± 0.32 and 6.70 ± 0.49, respectively (p < 0.001). The mineral losses of the control and GA-KR12-treated groups were 1.39 ± 0.09 gcm-3 and 1.19 ± 0.05 gcm-3, respectively (p < 0.001). The calcium-to-phosphorus molar ratios of the control and GA-KR12-treated groups were 1.47 ± 0.03 and 1.57 ± 0.02, respectively (p < 0.001). A uniformly remineralised prismatic pattern on enamel blocks was observed in the GA-KR12-treated but not in the control group. The hydroxyapatite in the GA-KR12-treated group was better crystallised than that in the control group. CONCLUSION: The dual-action peptide GA-KR12 inhibited the growth of S. mutans biofilm and promoted the remineralisation of enamel caries. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: GA-KR12 potentially is applicable for managing enamel caries.

There is a global increase in the older population. Unfortunately, dental conditions in the older population can sometimes be poor as a result of worsened physical conditions and the cumulative damage caused by dental diseases in the past. Many suffer from oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease but receive no regular dental care. Oral conditions and systemic problems are interrelated. Chronic medical problems and polypharmacy are common among them. These conditions may lead to xerostomia with or without a decrease in saliva output. Additionally, many older adults have deteriorated masticatory function associated with physical health issues such as frailty. Preventive measures are crucial to stop oral diseases from progressing and the replacement of missing teeth is needed when masticatory function is impaired. Older adults also suffer a higher risk of oral cancer because of their less resilient but more permeable oral mucosa. With the increasing need for elderly dental care, dentists should equip themselves with knowledge and skills in geriatric dentistry. They should help older adults to develop and maintain the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. This communication article aims to discuss the relevant medical conditions, common dental diseases, and dental care for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in dentistry provide essential evidence for dentists to practice evidence-based dentistry. This study aimed to analyze the scientific impacts of the RCTs conducted among children and adolescents published in dental journals and summarize the main contents of these studies. METHODS: An electronic literature search was conducted in the database Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection by two independent reviewers in June 2020, without an initial time limit. Articles reporting on RCTs conducted among children and adolescents in dental fields were identified. The most cited articles (the top 100 articles based on total citation counts and citation density) were selected. The bibliometric data were exported from the database WoS for further analysis. The citation counts were cross-checked in Google Scholar. In addition, the main content of the included RCTs was extracted and summarized. RESULTS: A total of 132 papers published in 28 journals reporting on RCTs in dentistry on children and adolescents were included in this study. The mean total citation count (within WoS) of the included RCTs was 60.0, ranging from 17 to 300, and the mean citation density value was 4.6, ranging from 1.3 to 15.0. The majority of the articles were in the thematic field of cariology (n = 79, 59.8%). Other thematic fields, orthodontology (20.5%), endodontology (5.3%), behavior science and quality of life (5.3%), oral and maxillofacial surgery (3.8%), oral hygiene (3.8%) and periodontology (1.5%) were involved as well. Around one-fifth of the articles (n = 23) were produced by the United States, and the included articles were most cited by the publications (n = 1937) from the United States as well. CONCLUSIONS: A wide range of dental topics were covered in the included RCTs conducted among children and adolescents. These top-cited RCTs mainly focus on the thematic field of cariology. The United States is an influential country with a large number of publication outputs and citations.

The advancement of medicine has reduced the rate of mortality and older adult population is increasing. Among the 7,700,000,000 world population in 2019, 1 in 11 people were at the age of 65 or more. The population is expected to increase to 1 in 6 people by 2050. Older adults have degenerative changes that become more severe with age. This study used the World Health Organization's websites and PubMed and Google Scholar databases to review current global oral and systemic health issues. Studies generally reported that many older adults have no regular dental checkup. Common oral diseases such as dental caries particularly root caries and periodontal disease are highly prevalent among them. These oral diseases are often interrelated with their systemic problems. A meta-analysis reported diabetes increases the incidence and progression of periodontitis by 86%. A decrease in salivary output is common among older adults having polypharmacy. A review reported the caries risk in older adults increases by 60% with low resting pH and low stimulated salivary flow rate. Many older adults suffer from dementia and depression which complicates the delivery of dental treatment. Proper oral hygiene practice and dental care at supine position are often difficult to be carried out if they have rheumatoid arthritis. With the increasing need of elderly dental care, dentists and other dental personnel should understand interlaced oral and general health in order to provide a successful dental care plan for older adults. The aim of this study is to give an overview of the common medical conditions and dental problems and their impacts on older adults.

A carbon dioxide laser at 9,300 nm has a high absorption affinity for water and a shallow depth of penetration. It can be used for soft tissue surgery and hemostasis. Besides, it matches well with the absorption characteristic of hydroxyapatite in enamel and dentine. Therefore, the laser possesses a great ability for energy transfer to dental hard tissues. It has a low risk of thermo-damage to the dentine-pulp complex because it has a shallow depth of heat absorption. Hence, the laser is safe for dental hard tissue preparation. A carbon dioxide laser at 9,300 nm can effectively alter the chemical structure of teeth. It increases the ratio of calcium to phosphorus and converts the carbonated hydroxyapatite to the purer hydroxyapatite of enamel and dentine. It can alter the surface morphology of a tooth through surface melting, fusion, and ablation of dentine and enamel. At higher power, it removes caries lesions. It can enhance the success of restoration by increasing the bond strength of dental adhesives to the dentine and enamel. A carbon dioxide laser at 9,300 nm can also be used with fluoride for caries prevention. The advancement of technology allows the laser to be delivered in very short pulse durations and high repetition rates (frequency). Consequently, the laser can now be used with high peak power. The objective of this review is to discuss the effects and potential use of a 9,300 nm carbon dioxide laser on dental hard tissue.

Antimicrobial peptides are naturally occurring protein molecules with antibacterial, antiviral and/or antifungal activity. Some antimicrobial peptides kill microorganisms through direct binding with negatively charged microbial surfaces. This action disrupts the cytoplasmic membrane and leads to the leakage of the cytoplasm. In addition, they are involved in the innate immune response. Antimicrobial peptides play an important role in oral health, as natural antimicrobial peptides are the first line of host defence in response to microbial infection. The level of natural antimicrobial peptides increases during severe disease conditions and play a role in promoting the healing of oral tissues. However, they are insufficient for eliminating pathogenic micro-organisms. The variability of the oral environment can markedly reduce the effect of natural antimicrobial peptides. Thus, researchers are developing synthetic antimicrobial peptides with promising stability and biocompatibility. Synthetic antimicrobial peptides are a potential alternative to traditional antimicrobial therapy. Pertinent to oral diseases, the deregulation of antimicrobial peptides is involved in the pathogenesis of dental caries, periodontal disease, mucosal disease and oral cancer, where they can kill pathogenic microorganisms, promote tissue healing, serve as biomarkers and inhibit tumor cells. This narrative review provides an overview of the multifaceted roles of antimicrobial peptides in oral diseases.

Objective: This study was intended to investigate the caries prevention potential of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser (λ = 10,600 nm) irradiation followed by application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to enamel. Materials and methods: Human enamel specimens were randomly allocated to four groups (n = 10 per group). Group 1 specimens were treated with SDF; Group 2 specimens were treated with a CO2 laser; Group 3 specimens were irradiated with a CO2 laser then treated with SDF, and Group 4 specimens received no treatment. All specimens were subjected to pH cycling for cariogenic challenge. Lesion depth, microhardness, surface morphology, and elemental analysis were assessed. Results: The lesion depths for Groups 1-4 were 33 ± 16, 80 ± 9, 18 ± 15, and 102 ± 9 µm, respectively (p < 0.001; Group 3 < Group 1 < Group 2 < Group 4). Knoop hardness values for Groups 1-4 were 61 ± 19, 68 ± 20, 78 ± 27, and 36 ± 8, respectively (p = 0.002; Group 4 < Groups 1, 2, and 3). The enamel in Group 4 but not in the other groups showed a roughened surface resembling an acid-etched pattern. Calcium-to-phosphorus molar ratios of Groups 1-4 were 1.68 ± 60.09, 1.61 ± 0.06, 1.69 ± 0.10, and 1.49 ± 0.10, respectively (p < 0.001; Group 4 < Groups 1, 2, and 3). Conclusions: Using the CO2 laser or SDF separately enhanced the resistance of enamel to cariogenic challenge. Moreover, there was an additional effect of the combined use of the CO2 laser and SDF for preventing enamel demineralization.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is a second messenger involved in the dental regeneration. However, efficient long-lasting delivery of cAMP that is sufficient to mimic the in vivo microenvironment remains a major challenge. Here, cAMP was loaded in stem cells from apical papilla (SCAPs) using layer-by-layer self-assembly with gelatin and alginate polyelectrolytes (LBL-cAMP-SCAPs). LBL-cAMP-SCAPs expressed cAMP and increased the phosphorylation level of cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB) which were evaluated by immunofluorescence and western blotting (WB). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) demonstrated that a sustained release of cAMP and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were present up to 14 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) found LBL-coated SCAPs exhibited a spheroid-like morphology. CCK8 and live/dead staining showed that LBL treatment had no significant effect on cell proliferation and viability. LBL-cAMP-SCAPs enhanced mineralized nodule formation and up-regulated the mRNA levels of the osteogenesis-related genes, as well as related transcription factor-2 protein level which were revealed by Alizarin red staining, RT-PCR and WB, respectively. In conclusion, LBL self-assembly loaded with cAMP promoted the osteo/odontogenic differentiation of SCAPs, thereby providing a potential strategy for bioactive molecular delivery in dental regeneration.

RESUMO

Replacing missing teeth distal to the last standing teeth with removable partial dentures poses considerable challenge to dentists. However, the insertion of implants turns a free-end saddle into a bounded saddle. Still, patients may not be able to accept implant insertions due to financial reasons, systemic medical conditions, local anatomical factors or complicated treatments involving surgery. Hence, patients with missing teeth often prefer to use removable partial dentures to improve their dental aesthetics and to restore their oral function. In this article, we use a clinical case to illustrate the clinical procedures required for the fabrication of a distal extension denture with good retention, support, stability, aesthetics and masticatory function. We also review the design for a clasp assembly on the abutment adjacent to the distal edentulous ridge.

Objective: To investigate the caries prevention effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) with a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser (λ = 10,600 nm) on dentin. Method: Human dentin slices (n = 10) were prepared and allocated to the following treatments: Group 1 (SDF)-slices received an SDF application. Group 2 (laser)-slices were irradiated with a CO2 laser. Group 3 (laser + SDF)-slices were irradiated with a CO2 laser, followed by an SDF application. Group 4 (negative control)-slices had no treatment. All of the slices were subjected to pH cycling for cariogenic challenge. Lesion depth, nanohardness, and chemical and morphological changes were assessed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), nanoindentation, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. Results: micro-CT determined lesion depths for groups 1-4 were 27 ± 6, 138 ± 32, 17 ± 5, and 182 ± 49 µm, respectively (p < 0.001; group 3 < group 1 < groups 2 and 4). The nanohardness values for groups 1-4 were 456 ± 109, 288 ± 5, 444 ± 142, and 258 ± 76 MPa, respectively (p = 0.003; groups 2 and 4 < groups 1 and 3). EDS determined that the calcium-to-phosphorus molar ratio for groups 1-4 were 1.26 ± 0.12, 1.07 ± 0.19, 1.37 ± 0.08, and 0.80 ± 0.17, respectively (p < 0.001; group 4 < group 2 < groups 1 and 3). SEM evidenced no ablation or cracking on the lased dentin surfaces. The treated dentin showed a relatively more intact and smoother surface morphology compared with the untreated dentin. Conclusions: SDF can reduce dentin demineralization against cariogenic challenge, and the caries preventive effect of SDF is further enhanced through CO2 laser irradiation.

Objective: To study the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers (λ = 10,600 nm) on remineralizing dental caries. Methods: This study involved performing a systematic search of English articles archived in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The keywords used to identify the relevant articles were ((CO2 laser) OR (carbon dioxide laser)) AND ((dental caries) OR (tooth remineralization)). Publications before 2019 were selected. The titles and abstracts of the initially identified articles were screened. Duplicate records, reviews, and irrelevant studies were removed. Full texts were retrieved for publications that studied the effects of CO2 lasers on remineralizing dental caries. Results: The search identified 543 potentially relevant publications. A total of 285 duplicate records were removed. Sixteen articles were included in this review. Four studies reported that CO2 lasers inhibited bacterial growth. The growth of cariogenic bacteria, mainly Streptococcus mutans, on an irradiated tooth surface was slower compared with nonirradiated ones. Four studies investigated the reduction of the demineralization of enamel with cariogenic challenge. They found that CO2 lasers reduced the carbonate content of mineralized tissues and increased the microhardness of enamel. Nine studies used CO2 lasers associated with topical fluorides in remineralizing dental caries. The results of the synergistic effect of laser irradiation and fluoride application with regard to the inhibition of caries progression varied among these studies, whereas laser irradiation could enhance fluoride uptake to demineralized mineral tissues. Conclusions: CO2 laser irradiation increased acid resistance and facilitated the fluoride uptake of caries-like lesions. In addition, it reduced the growth of cariogenic bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Medical-dental collaboration expands patients' access to health services, improves healthcare outcomes, and reduces the burden and cost of care, especially for those with chronic diseases. The aim of the present study is to investigate the attitude toward and awareness of medical-dental collaboration among medical and dental students attending the Universitas Indonesia. METHODS: All medical and dental students at the Universitas Indonesia were invited to participate in a web-based questionnaire survey that contained eight questions on attitudes toward medical-dental collaboration and two questions regarding awareness of dental-medical collaborative practices. The demographic backgrounds of all participants were obtained. The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were employed for data analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1,432 questionnaires were distributed, and 1,137 (79%) were appropriately completed. In general, 992 (87%) students had a positive attitude toward medical-dental collaboration. Dental students had a more positive attitude than medical students (odds ratio [OR] = 2.694; p = 0.001), and senior students had a more positive attitude than junior students (OR = 2.271; p = 0.001). Most students (86%) were aware of medical-dental collaboration at the Universitas Indonesia and reported that emergency medicine, surgery, and otolaryngology were the three most common medical disciplines that entailed medical-dental collaboration. CONCLUSIONS: In general, the medical and dental students demonstrated positive attitudes and awareness of medical-dental collaboration at the Universitas Indonesia. Positive attitude and awareness can establish an essential foundation for fostering collaboration between medicine and dentistry, which is vital to improve resource efficiency and healthcare standards.

Aims: To evaluate Hong Kong dental students' perceived awareness, preparedness and barriers towards managing tobacco-using patients. Methods: A validated questionnaire was administered to dental students who were in their clinical years (the third, fourth, fifth and sixth year of study) in 2017 at the University of Hong Kong. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: (1) awareness towards practicing tobacco cessation counselling (TCC), (2) preparedness in terms of confidence, knowledge and clinical practices when managing tobacco-using patients, and (3) perceived barriers to counselling. Results: All 206 invited students had participated this study. Most (93%) agreed that dentists should deliver TCC. However, only around a quarter (26%) of students were well-prepared to help patients in tobacco cessation. While 60% of students agreed nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) was helpful for patients to quit tobacco use, only 28% understood its mechanism of action, and merely 16% were knowledgeable enough to introduce NRT to their patients. Two-thirds (62%) of students felt they did not have sufficient skills at this stage of their training. Conclusions: Most Hong Kong dental students had good awareness that dental professionals had an important role to promote tobacco cessation in their patient pools. However, not many of them were well-prepared to manage tobacco-using patients. Common barriers were found to be patients' apathy and students' inadequate familiarity with NRT.
