RESUMO

Abstract Pesticide residues that contaminate the environment circulate within the hydrological cycle can accumulate within the food chain and cause problems to both environmental and human health. Microbes, however, are well known for their metabolic versatility and the ability to degrade chemically stable substances, including recalcitrant xenobiotics. The current study focused on bio-prospecting within Amazonian rainforest soils to find novel strains fungi capable of efficiently degrading the agriculturally and environmentally ubiquitous herbicide, glyphosate. Of 50 fungal strains isolated (using culture media supplemented with glyphosate as the sole carbon-substrate), the majority were Penicillium strains (60%) and the others were Aspergillus and Trichoderma strains (26 and 8%, respectively). All 50 fungal isolates could use glyphosate as a phosphorous source. Eight of these isolates grew better on glyphosate-supplemented media than on regular Czapek Dox medium. LC-MS revealed that glyphosate degradation by Penicillium 4A21 resulted in sarcosine and aminomethylphosphonic acid.

RESUMO

Composting is useful for treatment of residues from agribusiness, but the potential toxicity of the final compost should be evaluated before its agricultural destination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and the toxicity of agribusiness residues using onion seeds as bioindicators. All tested treatments were composed by sludge from a swine slaughterhouse and sawdust. Besides the control, which included no additional materials, the other treatments included aviary bedding, rice husk and residue from tobacco industries as structuring materials. After 120 days of composting, for all treatments, the temperature inside the composting piles approached the environmental temperature, the physicochemical parameters indicated that the composts were stabilized and, except for the treatment including tobacco residues, that could be used for agriculture without impairing plant germination. Although the treatments including tobacco residues and rice husk showed evidence of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity at the beginning of the composting period, that was not observed for the treatment including aviary bedding. Such potential toxicity was not observed at the end of composting for any of the tested treatments.

RESUMO

Several nutritional strategies have been used in beef cattle production in order to increase animal performance and profitability. However, in the past two decades, the increase of consumer preference for functional foods has driven the investigation for improving food via adding functional substances to animal diets. We evaluated the effect of canola oil supplementation associated with vitamin E and selenium on performance, rumen metabolism, carcass traits, meat tenderness, and serum, liver, and meat status of antioxidants in finishing Nellore males. Animals were fed for 106 days in a feedlot and were randomly distributed in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: two levels of oil in the diet (no inclusion and 3% canola oil, defined as diet without oil inclusion (NO) and effect of oil (OIL), respectively) and two levels of antioxidants in the diet (no inclusion and 2.5 mg of Se/kg of DM + 500 UI of vitamin E/kg of DM, defined as diet without antioxidant inclusion (NA) and effect of the antioxidants (ANT), respectively). DM intake (kg/day) was evaluated daily; performance and serum were analysed at the beginning of the feedlot and every 28 days. Animals were slaughtered and hot carcass weight (kg) was recorded; ruminal fluid and liver samples were collected. At 24 h postmortem, carcass pH was recorded and the Longissimus thoracis was sampled. There was no significant effect of the OIL*ANT interaction (P > 0.05) for any trait evaluated. Bulls fed OIL presented greater final BW (P < 0.01), average daily gain (kg/day; P < 0.01), feed efficiency (P < 0.01), rump fat thickness (P8RF; P < 0.05), and greater tenderness; the ANT diet increased P8RF (P < 0.05). The levels of selenium and vitamin E in serum, liver, and meat were increased (P < 0.01) with the inclusion of ANT. ANT did not change triiodothyronine (T3, ng/mL) and thyroxine (T4, µg/gL) serum concentrations but decreased serum glucose levels. The treatments did not affect (P > 0.05) ruminal parameters or the protozoa population. Our results showed that the inclusion of 3% canola oil in the diet DM increased performance, feed efficiency, carcass fat deposition, and tenderness, with no effect on rumen fermentation and protozoa population of Nellore cattle in a feedlot system. The inclusion of ANT in the cattle diet did not affect performance or rumen parameters. However, the levels of ANT were increased in the serum, liver, and meat, enriching the final product with these compounds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in adults and children. The prevalence has increased in some countries, but no descriptive studies of MF in the pediatric population have been done in Colombia to date. METHODS: A combined prospective-retrospective study of 128 patients with a diagnosis of MF confirmed by the dermatology department and dermatopathology laboratory of Universidad de Antioquia between 2008 and 2017. We describe the clinical and histopathologic variants, response to treatment, and progression of the disease in 23 patients under 18 years of age. RESULTS: The pediatric cases of MF accounted for 18% of all the cases on record. The median age of onset of lesions was 9 years, the median age at diagnosis was 11 years, and the median time between onset of lesions and diagnosis was 2 years. All patients were in early stages of the disease. Hypopigmented MF was the most common clinical presentation (in 52.2%), followed by classical MF (in 30.4%). Folliculotropic MF was identified in 17.4%. All patients were treated with topical corticosteroids and phototherapy. One patient received chemotherapy while still in the early stage of disease. Complete remission was achieved in 59.1% and a partial response in 40.9%. Only 2 patients remained asymptomatic for 5 years. CONCLUSION: We found hypopigmented MF to be the most common clinical presentation in patients under 18 years of age. The disease did not progress to advanced stages in any of the patients, although recurrence after treatment interruption was common.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the incidence of temporomandibular arthropathies diagnosed in a university center and to describe their histopathological characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Temporomandibular arthropathy cases with corresponding slides were selected from an oral and maxillofacial surgical pathology service. Cases of exclusively articular disc disease were not included. RESULTS: The mean age was 31.3 years with a predominance of females (69.7%). Of these diagnoses, 53.6% were unilateral condylar hyperplasia, 17.8% were bony ankylosis, 14.3% were degenerative joint disease, 10.7% were osteochondroma, and 3.6% were synovial chondromatosis. Condylar hyperplasia presented as thick fibrocartilage and cartilage nests in the cancellous bone. Bony ankylosis exhibited lamellar bone and nests of chondrocytes. Degenerative joint disease presented as an irregular layer of fibrocartilage with areas of clustered chondrocytes and calcified cartilage. Osteochondroma of the condyle exhibited hyaline cartilage and areas of new bone formation. Synovial chondromatosis presented as immature cartilaginous tissue and randomly arranged chondrocytes. CONCLUSIONS: The pathological alterations verified in these arthropathies involved diseases that were predominantly proliferative, i.e., unilateral condylar hyperplasia, osteochondroma and synovial chondromatosis of the tumor or pseudotumor type and bony ankylosis associated with callus formation of the reparative type, and less frequent degenerative changes for which the disease is so named.

ABSTRACT: Lymphedematous mucinosis associated with obesity is a recently recognized dermatosis that corresponds to the group of focal cutaneous mucinosis. It presents a characteristic clinical course consisting of the progressive and asymptomatic appearance of lesions in the legs of adults who concomitantly have obesity and lymphedema secondary in the lower limbs, as in the clinical case that we will discuss. After having made the differential diagnosis with other possible types of cutaneous mucinosis, according to the clinical context in which the lesions occur, therapeutic management should be aimed at achieving a significant decrease in weight.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to prove the effectiveness of a low cost, artificial model for training of a laparoscopic urethrovesical anastomosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included urologists who attended specialised courses on laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) held during the period 2015 to 2017. They were divided into 2 groups according to their previous experience in laparoscopic surgery. The tasks performed on the artificial simulator were prostate resection, "task 1", and urethrovesical anastomosis, "task 2". Once these exercises were completed, the study participants filled in an anonymous questionnaire regarding their demographic data and experience level in laparoscopic surgery (LS). In addition, they gave their opinions about the didactic capacity of the artificial organ and evaluated its usefulness as a tool for LRP training. To demonstrate face and content validity, the participants judged the texture, consistency, morphology and evaluated its similarity to the real organ. The assessment was made with a five-point Likert scale. RESULTS: The students were divided into 2groups: 10 experts (Group E) and 12 novices (Group N). The only significant difference between the scores of novices and experts was regarding the inclusion of this tool in the training programs (Group E=5 points versus group N=4.4±0.59, P=.024). The experts' group rated all the items with higher scores than the novices' one. Regarding the general assessment of the simulation model, the novice participants gave an average score of 8.00±0.91 points out of 10, while the experts' group granted higher scores of 9.4±0,51. CONCLUSION: This artificial model has shown to have an elevated face, content and construct validity, as well being an optimal didactic tool for training in the techniques of prostate resection and laparoscopic urethrovesical anastomosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of invasive candidiasis in newborns with birth weight below 1,500 g ranges from 2% to 8%, and fluconazole prophylaxis in neonatal units is recommended when the incidence of invasive candidiasis is higher than 5%. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of targeted prophylaxis and universal prophylaxis with fluconazole in the prevention of invasive candidiasis. METHODS: This was a historical cohort comparing the targeted prophylaxis for newborns weighing less than 1,500 g and the universal prophylaxis for newborns weighing less than 1,000 g. RESULTS: The overall incidence rate of invasive candidiasis was 5.25% and was reduced from 7.1% to 3.72% with universal prophylaxis (p = 0.04). In a multivariate analysis, the significant factors associated with the development of candidiasis were birth weight less than 1,000 g, prolonged hospitalization, previous surgery, prolonged use of mechanical ventilation, prior exposure to antimicrobial treatments, and use of targeted prophylaxis. CONCLUSIONS: Universal prophylaxis had lower incidence of invasive candidiasis, and preventive measures considering the risk factors are mandatory to reduce the incidence of invasive candidiasis.

RESUMO

An adequate functioning of the digestive tract, liver and pancreas is fundamental to providing the organism with the necessary conditions for its development and maintaining its digestive and systemic homeostasis. Life expectancy has increased, it is estimated that adults over 65 years old by 2050, will represent 25% of the local population. The morphological and functional changes associated with aging in the digestive system, liver and pancreas are modest except for those that occur in the microbiota. Recently it has been possible to establish the contribution of the microbiota to life expectancy and establish a link between gastrointestinal microbiota, inflammation associated with aging (inflammaging) and survival. This represents a shift in the paradigm of our understanding physiology, chronic diseases, neoplasms and for the development of new therapies.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when gastric or duodenal contents flow back into the esophagus by retroperistalsis, which leads to several signs and clinical implications. The incidence of intraoperative gastroesophageal reflux in canines is unknown. The aim of this study was, using flexible endoscopy, to assess the presence and quantify gastroesophageal reflux in bitches undergoing ovariohysterectomy by two surgical approaches (conventional and video-assisted by two portals-access), pre-medicated with morphine. 100% of dogs submitted to video-assisted and 30% of dogs submitted to conventional ovariohysterectomy presented some reflux degree. Reflux intensity was higher in dogs submitted to the minimally invasive procedure, since they (10 out of 10 animals) had at least one reflux classified in R4 while the others (three out of 10) had a maximum reflux in degree R3 according to the planned scale for this research. The laparoscopic procedures under the used anesthetic protocol promote more gastroesophageal reflux than the conventional ones.(AU)

We report here the first case in Brazil of an intervertebral disc disease (Hansen type I) between the caudal vertebrae (coccygeal) in a six-year-old Basset Hound dog, castrated, weighing 16 kg and history of pain during defecation and manipulation of the pelvic region, associated with the inability to move, raise and shake its tail. In the radiography survey, an opacity of the intervertebral foramen between the fourth and fifth caudal vertebra was observed. The animal underwent a modified dorsal laminectomy followed by fenestration of the affected intervertebral disc. After 15 days following surgery, the patient showed no signs of pain when defecating and was able to perform the tail wag movements, but with discomfort on palpation and could not rise the tail high up the spine, which was resolved after 30 days of surgery. The relevance of this report is the inclusion, even if rare, of the caudal intervertebral disc disease in the differential diagnosis in dogs with pain during defecation and handling of the tail, and the radiographic survey is an important auxiliary tool for definitive diagnosis and treatment plan for this disease.(AU)

Incidence of intraoperative gastroesophageal reflux disease in dogs is unknown. The objective was, through flexible endoscopy, to assess the presence of gastroesophageal reflux in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy based on analgesic drugs used in premedication (morphine, tramadol or methadone). It was concluded that there was no difference in the incidence of intraoperative gastroesophageal reflux, these drugs don't influence this behavior; however, in the morphine group some animals showed preoperative vomiting. The severity of the reflux was higher, but not significantly, in bitches undergoing the methadone according to the evaluator method used for this research.(AU)

RESUMO

The contents of soybean can modify the structure of the reproductive system, especially, when consumed for prolonged periods. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the consumption of transgenic soybean on rat penis morphology after prolonged use. Wistar rats (n = 30) were divided into three groups according to diet: Transgenic Soybean (TS) group, Organic Soybean (OS) group and Control (C) group. After 455 days of intake, the rats were sacrificed and the penises were excised and fixed in formalin for subsequent histological processing. The samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Weigert’s resorcin-fuchsin stain, and picrosirius red with polarization. The images were scanned for the histomorphometric analyses of the corpora cavernosa, corpus spongiosum, erectile tissue, and tunica albuginea as well as the measurement of the thickness of the tunica albuginea. The diameter and areas of the penile arteries with the intima and media tunica were also measured. The elastic fibers of the tunica albuginea, corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum were quantified using stereological methods. No significant differences were observed in the collagen and elastic components among the groups. We concluded that no statistically significant differences were found among the groups, demonstrating that the prolonged consumption of OS and TS does not affect the penile structure.

This is a case report of a cat with signs of respiratory distress for about 30 days and progressive weight loss. The thoracic radiograph and abdomen examination evidencing loss of definition of the diaphragmatic line is compatible with diaphragmatic hernia. In laparoscopy, a large diaphragmatic defect and herniated structures were observed. Since abdominal viscera point towards the chest making occlusion of defective intracorporeal sutures difficult, paracostal incision proceeding to hernia repair by short celiotomy was chosen. Laparoscopy allows for location of herniated place and promotes the reduction of organs involved with minimal surgical trauma. Therefore, it was shown to be an effective diagnostic tool and an aid in the treatment of chronic diaphragmatic hernias of large size in a cat.(AU)

RESUMO

Individual therapeutic monitoring of busulfan (BU) minimizes its toxicity and improves the therapeutic outcomes during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). For individual dose adjustment, several blood collections are performed that are uncomfortable for patients. The aim of this pilot study was to validate a laboratory method for quantification of BU in saliva and to present the results obtained using this protocol in HSCT patients. We performed analyses of selectivity, precision and accuracy of saliva with standard concentrations of BU using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. We also determined salivary and plasmatic concentrations of BU in six HSCT patients. Saliva exhibited excellent selectivity, precision and accuracy for quantification of BU. In the patient samples, significant correlations were noted between plasmatic and salivary concentrations of BU (r=0.97, P<0.001 in the test dose; r=0.93, P<0.001 in the adjusted dose). Passing &Bablok regression revealed good agreement between the two methods (R2=0.956 for test dose; R2=0.927 for adjusted dose). In conclusion, the saliva is safe for laboratory BU measurement. The good agreement with plasma encourages further clinical studies using saliva for BU therapeutic monitoring.
