BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that the number of cancer-related deaths was 9.6 million in 2018 and 2.09 million deaths occurred by lung cancer. The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) also observed gender preferences in lung cancer, common in men than women. Since the past decade, nanoparticles have now been widely documented for their anti-cancer properties, which signifies that the development of nanotechnology would be a future diagnosis and treatment strategy for lung cancer. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to investigate the role of biosynthesized CdS nanoparticles (CdS NPs) in lung cancer cells (A549). Therefore, whether the CdS NP induces lung cancer cell death and the underlying mechanism is yet to be elucidated. METHODS: Literature was searched from various archives of biomedical and life science journals. Then, CdS NPs were biosynthesized and characterized by traditional and cutting-edge protocols. The CdS NP-mediated cell death was elucidated following standard protocols. RESULTS: CdS NPs induced cytotoxicity towards A549 cells in a dose-dependent manner. However, such a death mechanism does not go through necrosis. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and mitochondrial membrane depolarization demonstrated that cell death is associated with intracellular ROS production. Furthermore, increased sub-G1 population, Bax expression, and decreased Bcl-2 expression revealed that the death was caused by apoptosis. CONCLUSION: CdS NPs promote apoptosis-mediated lung cancer cell death through ROS production.

INTRODUCTION: Latarjet procedure is commonly performed for recurrent anterior shoulder instability with glenoid side bone loss. Classic Latarjet procedure can be performed using specially designed drill guides, jigs, or by freehand technique. Here we have described a technical note on classic Latarjet procedure performed with freehand technique utilizing simple rulers and caliper. The functional and radiological outcomes of our patients have also been analysed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 149 open classic Latarjet procedures were performed using our technique between March 2015 and July 2018. The mean age of the patients was 32.95 years (Range 22-59 years). The functional outcome of the patients was measured using Western Ontario Shoulder Instability (WOSI) and Oxford Shoulder Instability Score (OSIS) at 2 years of follow-up. Screw and graft positioning were studied in 24 consecutive patients with a postoperative computed tomography (CT) scan. RESULTS: There was no incidence of recurrent subluxation or dislocation post-surgery. Mean OSIS score increased from 15.63 ± 3.20 preoperatively to 42.44 ± 3.88 postoperatively (p value < 0.05). WOSI score decreased significantly from 62.54% ± 8.24 to 10.26 ± 6.33 postoperatively at 2-year follow-up (p value < 0.05). Postoperative CT scan also showed satisfactory screw placement in all patients. CONCLUSION: Open Latarjet procedure performed using freehand technique provides good functional and radiological outcomes in patients with recurrent anterior shoulder instability with glenoid side bone loss. Estrogen regulates bone homeostasis and has a cardio-protective effect. Its physiological functions are mediated through receptors (ER) whose expression can be regulated by presence or absence of polymorphisms. However, the association between ER polymorphisms and BMD as well as lipids are inconsistent. The aim of the study was to investigate whether polymorphisms in ESR are associated with bone mineral density (BMD) and lipids in a cohort of Indian women. We studied PvuII, XbaI polymorphisms in ESR1 and AluI, RsaI polymorphisms in ESR2 genes and their association with bone mineral density (BMD) and lipids in premenopausal (n = 293, mean age: 33.01 ±â€¯5.23 years) and postmenopausal (n = 145, mean age: 56.91 ±â€¯7.1 years) women from Northeast India. AluI and RsaI polymorphisms in ESR2 gene were associated with BMD in postmenopausal women. Logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, BMI, tobacco and alcohol consumption revealed that xx genotype in XbaI polymorphism is associated with osteopenia at spine (OR = 3.3, 95% CI = 1.067-10.204) in postmenopausal women suggesting that allele X is protective (OR = 0.419, 95% CI = 0.177-0.991). Genotype aa in AluI polymorphism, seemed to be protective (OR = 0.092 for osteopenia; OR = 0.152 for osteoporosis) at spine whereas A allele was associated with osteopenia at femur (OR = 2.123, 95% CI = 1.079-4.166) in postmenopausal women. Allele r of RsaI polymorphism, was associated with osteoporosis at spine (OR = 3.222, 95% CI = 1.302-7.96). Thus, AIuI polymorphism of ESR2 gene was associated with spinal and femoral BMD whereas RsaI only with spinal BMD in postmenopausal women and ESR genotypes were not associated with lipids.

This study investigated association between lipids and homocysteine (Hcy) with bone mineral density (BMD) in young women as opposed to previous studies on elderly women. HDL, triglyceride, and Hcy are significantly associated with BMD in young women and tobacco and alcohol consumption have no effect on this association. PURPOSE: The present study investigates whether the association of serum lipids and homocysteine (Hcy) with bone mineral density (BMD) reported mostly in elderly population can be generalized to young or premenopausal women, consequently suggesting screening of young women with low BMD for dyslipidemia or any cardiovascular events and vice versa. METHODS: Women (n = 293, aged 20-47 years) from Northeast India belonging to Tibeto-Burman origin were enrolled. Information about their physical and clinical attributes were collected by a structured questionnaire. Their BMDs at lumbar spine and femur were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and sera were profiled for lipid parameters and Hcy by auto-analyzer and ELISA, respectively. Women consuming tobacco and/or alcohol were grouped as consumers and others as non-consumers for the analysis. RESULTS: Positive correlation of BMD with HDL (spine and femur r = 0.38, p < 0.0001) and triglyceride (spine r = 0.534, p < 0.0001; femur r = 0.423, p < 0.0001) was observed, whereas Hcy correlated negatively with BMD (spine r = - 0.189, p = 0.0026; femur r = - 0.273, p < 0.0001). LDL showed a weak negative correlation with BMD (spine r = - 0.128, p = 0.0283; femur r = - 0.199, p = 0.0006). However, after adjusting for age, BMI, and consumption, HDL, triglyceride, and Hcy continued to show significant correlation with BMD at both the sites. Logistic regression analyses indicated that HDL, triglyceride, and Hcy were significant predictors of osteopenia and osteoporosis in our study cohort; however, consumption did not contribute to its prediction. CONCLUSION: Low levels of HDL and triglyceride and high levels of Hcy are significantly associated with osteopenia and osteoporosis in young Northeast Indian women.

Because of the increasing prevalence of multidrug resistance feature, several investigations have been so far reported regarding the antibiotic alternative supramolecular bioactive agents made of hybrid assemblies. In this regard, it is well-established that combinational therapy inherited by assembled supramolecular structures can improve the bioactivity to some extent, but their mode of action has not been studied in detail. We provide first direct evidence that the improved mechanism of action of antimicrobial supra-amphiphilic nanocomposites differs largely from their parent antimicrobial peptide-based polymers. For the construction of a hybrid combinational system, we have synthesized side-chain peptide-based antimicrobial polymers via RAFT polymerization and exploited their cationic nature to decorate supra-amphiphilic nanocomposites via interaction with anionic polyoxometalates. Because of cooperative antimicrobial properties of both the polymer and polyoxometalate, the nanocomposites show an enhanced antimicrobial activity with a different antimicrobial mechanism. The cationic stimuli-responsive peptide-based polymers attack bacteria via membrane disruption mechanism, whereas free radical-mediated cell damage is the likely mechanism of polymer-polyoxometalate-based supra-amphiphilic nanocomposites. Thus, our study highlights the different antimicrobial mechanism of combinational systems in detail, which improves our understanding of enhanced antimicrobial efficacy.

Toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) were examined on a cadmium-resistant strain of Aspergillus foetidus isolated from wastewater. The Cd removal potential was analyzed. The results indicated that the strain could tolerate up to 25 mM and 63 mM Cd in liquid and solid Czapek-Dox media, respectively. It efficiently removed Cd from liquid growth media and industrial wastewater by mycelial biosorption. The strain produced oxalic acid for the purpose of Cd bioleaching as confirmed by the presence of cadmium oxalate crystals on the mycelial surface. Intracellular proline contents and the antioxidative enzyme activities increased up to a certain level to detoxify the overproduced free radicals. These data indicate that the strain has inherent mechanisms to grow in Cd contaminated environment, tolerate high Cd doses and high Cd uptake potential which are pre-requisite for acting as a suitable candidate for Cd bioremediation.

Two cadmium resistant mutants (Cd1 and Cd2) of Aspergillus niger, among the six isolated by mutagenization with N-methyl N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) at pH 6.4 were selected for the study. Analysis of lipid composition of the mutants and the wildtype indicated that total lipid as well as individual lipids of the cadmium resistant mutants were changed as compared with that of the wildtype. The increased activities of metal-lothionein and reduced activities of D-xylose isomerase and L-phenylalanine ammonia lyase in cell free extract of the cadmium resistant mutants suggested that mutants could allow high concentration of cadmium salt as compared with that of the wildtype. The respiratory activity and intracellular as well as extracellular Cd2+ concentration of the mutants reflected the high tolerance of the Cd mutants to cadmium ion.
