RESUMO

The storage of CO2 and hydrogen within depleted gas and oil reservoirs holds immense potential for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and advancing renewable energy initiatives. However, achieving effective storage necessitates a thorough comprehension of the dynamic interplay between interfacial tension and wettability alteration under varying conditions. This comprehensive review investigates the multifaceted influence of several critical parameters on the alterations of IFT and wettability during the injection and storage of CO2 and hydrogen. Through a meticulous analysis of pressure, temperature, treatment duration, pH levels, the presence of nanoparticles, organic acids, anionic surfactants, and rock characteristics, this review elucidates the intricate mechanisms governing the changes in IFT and wettability within reservoir environments. By synthesizing recent experimental and theoretical advancements, this review aims to provide a holistic understanding of the processes underlying IFT and wettability alteration, thereby facilitating the optimization of storage efficiency and the long-term viability of depleted reservoirs as carbon capture and storage or hydrogen storage solutions. The insights gleaned from this analysis offer invaluable guidance for researchers, engineers, and policymakers engaged in harnessing the potential of depleted reservoirs for sustainable energy solutions and environmental conservation. This synthesis of knowledge serves as a foundational resource for future research endeavors aimed at enhancing the efficacy and reliability of CO2 and hydrogen storage in depleted reservoirs.

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative spine surgeries often require postoperative immobilization or reduced mobility, predisposing patients to the formation of thrombosis and higher risk of thromboembolic complications. Despite the significance of this issue, there remains a lack of consensus on the optimal anticoagulant agent for postoperative thromboprophylaxis in spinal stenosis and degenerative spine surgeries. Low molecular weight heparins and direct Xa inhibitors represent two anticoagulant groups with high chemoprophylactic potential. METHODS: This study included a prospective cohort of patients undergoing posterior decompressive surgery with or without instrumentation for degenerative spine disease and/or spinal stenosis. Patients receiving postoperative prophylactic Enoxaparin and Apixaban were selected to evaluate the rate of complications, as assessed by Clavien-Dindo classification, thromboembolic events, and 30-day mortality, readmission, and reoperation rate between the two anticoagulants. RESULTS: 130 patients were included in the analysis. 65 patients received Apixaban and Enoxaparin in each group. Mean age of the participants was 57.6±11.0. 83.1% underwent laminectomy and posterior spinal fusion, while 22 patients underwent decompressive surgery only. The incidence of venous thromboembolism (P-value=0.403), deep vein thrombosis (p-value=0.999), hematoma formation (p-value=0.403), surgical site infection (p-value=0.901), readmission (p-value=0.545), reoperation (p=0.510), mortality (p=0.648), and complications rate (p-value=0.232) were not statistically different between Enoxaparin and Apixaban. DISCUSSION: Both Apixaban and Enoxaparin may be viable options for postoperative thromboprophylaxis in spine surgeries with comparable efficacy and safety profile. Future research endeavors should investigate the efficacy of these agents in comparison to placebo in a randomized setting.

BACKGROUND: The human papillomavirus (HPV) infection may affect the miRNA expression pattern during cervical cancer (CC) development. To demonstrate the association between high-risk HPVs and the development of cervix dysplasia, we examined the expression patterns of hsa-miR-194-5p and hsa-miR-195-5p in Pap smear samples from southeast Iranian women. We compared samples that were HPV-positive but showed no abnormality in the cytological examination to samples that were HPV-positive and had severe dysplasia. METHODS: Pap smear samples were obtained from 60 HPV-positive (HPV-16/18) patients with histologically confirmed severe dysplasia (cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN 3) or carcinoma in situ) and the normal cytology group. The expression of hsa-miR-194-5p and hsa-miR-195-5p was analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR, using specific stem-loop primers and U6 snRNA as the internal reference gene. Clinicopathological features were associated with miRNA expression levels. Furthermore, functional enrichment analysis was conducted using in silico tools. The Kaplan-Meier survival method was also obtained to discriminate survival-significant candidate miRNAs in CC, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to assess the diagnostic value. RESULTS: Compared to HPV-positive cytologically normal Pap smear samples, hsa-miR-194-5p and hsa-miR-195-5p relative expression decreased significantly in HPV-positive patients with a severe dysplasia Pap smear. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated a significant association between the miR-194 decrease and poor CC survival. In essence, ROC curve analysis showed that miR-194-5p and miR-195-5p could serve as valuable markers for the development of cervix dysplasia in individuals who are positive for high-risk HPVs. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that hsa-miR-194-5p and hsa-miR-195-5p may possess tumor suppressor capabilities in the context of cervical dysplasia progression. However, it remains uncertain whether these microRNAs are implicated in the transition of patients with high dysplasia to cervical cancer. We also showed the potential capability of candidate miRNAs as novel diagnostic biomarkers related to cervical dysplasia progression.

Inflammation of the posterior segment of the eye is a severe condition and hard to cure as delivery of drugs to the inflammation site is inefficient. Currently, the primary treatment approach is ocular surgery or invasive ocular injections. Herein, we designed and developed a topically self nano-emulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDs) to deliver triamcinolone acetonide (TCA) to the posterior segment of the eye. A screening based on TCA solubility was conducted on each excipient followed by preparation of various formulations using different ratios of the selected excipients. Vesicles of optimized SNEDDs had less than 100 nm size and spherical morphology. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay showed self-emulsified vesicles have relatively high safety on retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell line. Furthermore, efficient cellular uptake of coumarin 6-loaded SNEDDs in RPE using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was confirmed. In addition, an in-vivo study using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining revealed that 14 days of topical treatment of albino rabbit eyes with TCA-loaded SNEDDs was safe and no sign of tissue destruction and inflammation was detected in different parts of the eye sections including cornea, sclera, retina, and optic nerve. Also, the CLSM images from topically treated eyes with coumarin 6 (a hydrophobic, fluorescent drug model) loaded SNEDDs, showed that the optimized SNEDDs could properly penetrate toward the posterior segments of the eye especially the retina, posterior parts of the choroid, and sclera. Considering the outstanding results obtained by ocular tissue penetration and low toxicity, prepared SNEDDs, have the potential to be used as a topical administration for treating posterior segment disorders of the eye through an utterly non-invasive route and TCA-loaded SNEDDs could be an alternative for TCA intravitreal and intra conjunctival injections.

The consumption of unrefined vegetable oil poses acute and chronic health issues, yet improper disposal of waste plantain peels is not environmentally sustainable. This research investigates the feasibility, mechanism and thermodynamics of waste plantain peels, and commercial bentonite clay for soybean oil refining. Experiment was carried out using masses (1-4 g) of commercial bentonite clay, and unripe plantain peel ash (UPPA) to degummed and neutralized free fatty acid (FFA) contents in crude soybean oil at varying temperatures (50-120 °C), and time (15-35 min) for treatment of soybean oil. FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, and XRF techniques were applied to characterize the sample. The results established that at optimum 4.0 g dosage, the UPPA (97.73%) was more effective in the removal of FFA from oil at 50 °C and 20 min, while the clay (90%) was more effective in the removal of colour pigment from the vegetable oil 100 °C, and 25 min. The optimum efficiency of Clay-Ash-composite (70:30) in adsorbing pigment from soybean oil corresponds to 80%. The impact of changing viscosities, densities, and acid values on the performance of UPPA, clay, and clay-UPPA composite was investigated. Mechanistic studies confirmed the pseudo-second-order kinetics at 5 × 10-2 g/mg min-1 and 1.87 × 10-1 g/mg min-1, with corresponding adsorption capacity of 30.40 mg/g and 4.91 mg/g, at R2 ≤ 0.9982. The UPPA-driven sorption of FFA occurred as a physisorption and exothermic process (- 620.60 kJ/mol), while colour pigment removal occurred by chemisorption and endothermic process (22.40 kJ/mol). The finding recommends UPPA and composite as economically feasible for refining soybean oil.

The presence of heavy metal, chromium (VI), in water environments leads to various diseases in humans, such as cancer, lung tumors, and allergies. This review comparatively examines the use of several adsorbents, such as biosorbents, activated carbon, nanocomposites, and polyaniline (PANI), in terms of the operational parameters (initial chromium (VI) concentration (Co), temperature (T), pH, contact time (t), and adsorbent dosage) to achieve the Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (qm) for chromium (VI) adsorption. The study finds that the use of biosorbents (fruit bio-composite, fungus, leave, and oak bark char), activated carbons (HCl-treated dry fruit waste, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) PEI-KOH alkali-treated rice waste-derived biochar, and KOH/hydrochloric acid (HCl) acid/base-treated commercial), iron-based nanocomposites, magnetic manganese-multiwalled carbon nanotubes nanocomposites, copper-based nanocomposites, graphene oxide functionalized amino acid, and PANI functionalized transition metal are effective in achieving high Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (qm) for chromium (VI) adsorption, and that operational parameters such as initial concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, and adsorbent dosage significantly affect the Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (qm). Magnetic graphene oxide functionalized amino acid showed the highest experimental and pseudo-second-order kinetic model equilibrium adsorption capacities. The iron oxide functionalized calcium carbonate (IO@CaCO3) nanocomposites showed the highest heterogeneous adsorption capacity. Additionally, Syzygium cumini bark biosorbent is highly effective in treating tannery industrial wastewater with high levels of chromium (VI).

Meat, poultry, and seafood such as fish are a valuable source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Considering their high consumption in the human diet, it is necessary to study pollutants (such as PAHs) in them. This present study has focused on the PAHs level and probabilistic risk of health in meat, poultry, fish and related product samples by MSPE-GC/MS technique (magnetic solid-phase extraction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry). The maximum mean of 16 PAH was detected in smoked fish samples (222.7 ± 13.2 µg/kg) and the minimum mean of 16 PAH was detected in chicken (juje) kebab (112.9 ± 7.2 µg/kg µg/kg). The maximum mean of 4PAHs was detected in tuna fish (23.7 ± 2.4 µg/kg) and the minimum mean of 4PAHs was seen in grilled chicken and sausage samples (non-detected). Our results showed the 4PAHs and B[a]P were lower than the EU (European Union) standard levels (these standard levels were 30 and 5 µg/kg, respectively). Furthermore, the correlation among the type and concentrations of PAHs congeners was investigated through cluster analysis by heat map and principal component analysis. The 90th percentile ILCR (incremental lifetime cancer risk) of PAH compounds in fish, poultry, meat and related products samples was 3.39E-06, which was lower than the maximum acceptable level of risk (10-4). Finally, the highest ILCR was related to hamburger (4.45E-06). Therefore, there is no risk in consuming these foods in Iran, but it is necessary to monitor PAHs concentration in different types of foods.

Purpose: As a scientific field, bioinformatics has drawn remarkable attention from various fields, such as information technology, mathematics, and modern biological sciences, in recent years. The topic models originating from the field of natural language processing have become the focus of attention with the rapid accumulation of biological datasets. Thus, this research is aimed at modeling the topic content of the bioinformatics literature presented by Iranian researchers in the Scopus Citation Database. Methodology. This research was a descriptive-exploratory study, and the studied population included 3899 papers indexed in the Scopus database, which had been indexed in this database until March 9, 2022. The topic modeling was then performed on the abstracts and titles of the papers. A combination of LDA and TF-IDF was utilized for topic modeling. Findings. The data analysis with topic modeling resulted in identifying seven main topics "Molecular Modeling," "Gene Expression," "Biomarker," "Coronavirus," "Immunoinformatics," "Cancer Bioinformatics," and "Systems Biology." Moreover, "Systems Biology" and "Coronavirus" had the largest and smallest clusters, respectively. Conclusion: The present investigation demonstrated an acceptable performance for the LDA algorithm in classifying the topics included in this field. The extracted topic clusters indicated excellent consistency and topic connection with each other.

In Asia, mulberry has long been used to treat various infectious and internal ailments as a traditional medication. The compounds found in it have the potential to improve human health. Because there is no approved and defined evaluation procedure, it has not been formally or scientifically recognized. As a result of these investigations, a new frontier in traditional Chinese medicine has opened up, with the possibility of modernization, for the interaction between active components of mulberry and their biological activities. These studies have used current biotechnological technologies. For ages, mulberry has been used as an herbal remedy in Asia to cure various diseases and internal disorders. It has a high concentration of bioactive chemicals that benefit human health. The most abundant phenolic components extracted from white mulberry leaves are flavonoids (Kuwanons, Moracinflavans, Moragrols, and Morkotins), phenolic acids, alkaloids, and so forth. Flavonoids, benzofurans, chalcones, and alkaloids have been discovered to have cytotoxic effects on human cancer cell lines. There is growing evidence that mulberry fruits can potentially prevent cancer and other aging-related disorders due to their high concentration of bioactive polyphenolic-rich compounds and macro and micronutrients. Anthocyanins are rapidly absorbed after eating, arriving in the plasmalemma within 15-50 min and entirely removed after 6-8 hr. Due to a lack of an approved and consistent technique for its examination, it has yet to be formally or scientifically recognized. The mulberry plant is commercially grown for silkworm rearing, and less attention is paid to its bioactive molecules, which have a lot of applications in human health. This review paper discusses the phenolic compounds of white mulberry and black mulberry in detail concerning their role in cancer prevention.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used in various industrial items, including plastics, textiles, construction materials, electronics, and auto parts. Several studies have investigated the concentration of OPE compounds in the air, where different compounds have been measured. This systematic review aims to investigate and summarize the relationship between exposure concentrations of OPEs in outdoor air and health risk for different OPE compounds, and correlations between OPE compounds in emission sources. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched from January 2000 to September 2021 to identify relevant research. The quality of the studies was assessed using the OHAT risk of bias tool. Spearman's correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to analyze the results and correlation between OPE compounds. A total of 7669 manuscripts were found from the search in 5 databases. Finally, 46 studies were included in the systematic review. According to the median concentrations in the studies that were included, Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) (25%), trimethylphenyl phosphate(TMPP) (19%), Tri-iso-butyl phosphate (TiBP) (12%), Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) (9%) and Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) (8%) had the greatest concentrations of OPEs overall. The cumulative contribution of the two main factors, F1 and F2, from the principal component analysis (PCA) results is 49.81%. The EDI value for the compounds is TCEP > TCIPP > TiBP > TMPP > 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) > TPHP > Tri(2-Ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) > Tri-m-cresyl phosphate (mTCP) > Tris(1, 3-dichloro-isopropyl) phosphate (TDCPP) > Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP). The total amount of non-carcinogenic risk (HQ) was for children > infants > adults. The highest value of HQ was for TCEP, TCIPP, and TMPP, respectively. The highest carcinogenic risk value was for TCEP and TMPP.

Background: Ligamentous laxity is a condition that leads to joints' hypermobility beyond their average and normal range of motion. It can cause musculoskeletal and joint injuries. This national multi-centered study investigated the epidemiology of generalized ligamentous laxity and its relationship with musculoskeletal disorders among Iranian adults with different ethnic backgrounds. Methods: A total of 1,488 people (age range: 17-40 years) were selected from eight cities and six different ethnicities of Iran and included in this cross-sectional study. The presence of ligamentous laxity with clinical examinations was searched according to Beighton score criteria. They were also examined for any kind of musculoskeletal disorders that might accompany ligamentous laxity. The Chi-square test was used to compare the frequency of ligamentous laxity based on gender and ethnicity; moreover, the t-test was utilized to compare the frequency of ligamentous laxity based on age. Results: In total, 280 (18.8%) participants had generalized ligamentous laxity, and it was more prevalent in women (22.7%), compared to men (14.4%). Regarding ethnicity, the highest and lowest prevalence rates were in Gilak (37.9%) and Persian-Arab (6%) ethnicities, respectively (P<0.001). Ligamentous laxity showed a significant relationship with sports injury, joint complaint, joint dislocation, ligament sprain, sciatica and back pain, Baker's cyst, and varicose veins (P<0.001). Most participants with generalized ligamentous laxity (93.6%) had no knowledge of their problem and its importance in choosing an appropriate sports activity. Conclusion: The prevalence of generalized ligamentous laxity seems to be relatively high among the 17-40-year-old population of Iran, especially in women. It seems to be significantly related to ethnicity. It is strongly recommended that examinations, screening, and information be provided at an early age in schools or at least in areas with a high prevalence as national programs.

A sensitive biosensor for the detection of miR-141 has been constructed. The DNA-biosensor is prepared by first immobilizing the thiolated methylene blue-labeled hairpin capture probe (MB-HCP) on two-layer nanocomposite film graphene oxide-chitosan@ polyvinylpyrrolidone-gold nanourchin modified glassy carbon electrode. We used the hematoxylin as an electrochemical auxiliary indicator in the second stage to recognize DNA hybridization via the square wave voltammetry (SWV) responses that record the accumulated hematoxylin on electrode surfaces. The morphology and chemical composition of nanocomposite was characterized using TEM, FE-SEM, and FT-IR techniques. The preparation stages of the DNA-biosensor were screened by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The proposed DNA-biosensor can distinguish miR-141 from a non-complementary and mismatch sequence. A detection limit of 0.94 fM and a linear range of 2.0 -5.0 × 105 fM were obtained using SWV for miR-141 detection. The working potential for methylene blue and hematoxylin was -0.28 and + 0.15 V vs. Ag/AgCl, respectively. The developed biosensor can be successfully used in the early detection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by directly measuring miR-141 in human plasma samples. This novel DNA-biosensor is of promise in early sensitive clinical diagnosis of cancers with miR-141 as its biomarker.

Due to the increasing use of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs), their possible toxic effects on human health have undoubtedly been considered. Previous studies proved that SiNPs induced oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress disrupt cell function and decrease insulin secretion. Therefore, this study intended to assess the effects of SiNPs on oxidative stress and insulin secretion and also the protective effects of gallic acid (GA) and gallic acid nanoparticles (NP-GA) on pancreatic ß-islets. In this study, the mice islets were separated and pretreated with various concentrations of GA and NP-GA then treated with a single dose of SiNPs. The cell viability of islets examined by MTT assay and also the levels of ROS, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH); activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and insulin secretion were evaluated. The results of MTT assay showed that SiNPs reduced islet viability in a dose-dependent manner and also insulin secretion, induced the formation of ROS, augmented MDA amounts, and decreased GSH levels, SOD, GPx, and CAT activities. Furthermore, pretreatment of islets with GA and NP-GA significantly returned these alterations at low dose. These findings suggested that SiNPs induced oxidative stress in the pancreatic islets, which could be one of the reasons for the decrease in insulin secretion and inducing diabetes. This study also showed that low doses of GA and NP-GA boosted the antioxidant defense system in the pancreatic ß-islets, preventing oxidative stress and, consequently, the progression of diabetes.

The analysis and probabilistic health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cereal products were done by using magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method and gas chromatography/mass spectrometric (GC/MS). The results of method showed LOQ and LOD of PAHs compounds were 0.105-0.180 and 0.035-0.060 µg/kg, and the recorded values were 4.3-12.1 and 6.1-20.3% for repeatability and reproducibility with an estimated recovery of 94.4-103.4%. In this study, we analyzed kind of bread (Barbari, Sangak, Baguette, Taftoon, Lavash), macaroni, lasagna, and cooked rice that mean of total PAHs were 98.2, 121.7, 134.9, 166.3, 176.3, 176.2, 130.1, and 248.3 µg/kg, respectively. Further, the correlation between the type and amount of 16 PAHs with cereal products samples evaluated with multivariate principal component analysis and heat map visualization. The highest incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was found in cooked rice (7.80E-6), while the lowest ILCR was found in Lasagna (2.35E-07). In conclusion, the PAHs content in the tested products were in low health risk ranges (1 × 10-6 < ILCR < 1 × 10-4), and all of the cereal products sold in Tehran are considered safe for consumers. Therefore, cereal products should be regularly evaluated and monitored by regulatory agencies to reduce contaminants in these high-consumption products.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of prosthetic tricuspid valve (TV) thrombosis is the highest among heart valves. It can lead to high morbidity and mortality without proper treatment. In this study, we sought to report the management and clinical outcomes of patients with mechanical TV thrombosis. METHODS: The current study was conducted in Rajaei Heart Center on 42 patients with mechanical TV thrombosis from 2006 to 2017. The baseline characteristics and the rates of adverse events during the follow-up period were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 67 episodes of mechanical TV thrombosis in 42 patients were observed. The mean age of patients was 45.5 ± 14.3 years (19-77), and overall two-thirds were female. Thrombolytic therapy was used in 41 (61.1%), anticoagulant intensification in 16 (23.9%), and surgery as the first approach in 10 (14.9%) episodes; subsequently, surgery as the final approach was implemented in 20 (29.8%) episodes. In-hospital mortality occurred in two (2.98%) patients. The rates of freedom from recurrent thrombosis were 84%, 61%, and 21% at the end of 1, 4, and 10 years, respectively. Survival rates and freedom from chronic valve dysfunction were 93%, 82%, and 75% after 1, 4, and 10 years. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study showed that recurrent thrombosis requiring intervention is a major complication of mechanical TV, which underscores individual-approached therapy and close follow-up.

The study of evolutionary dynamics on graphs is an interesting topic for researchers in various fields of science and mathematics. In systems with finite population, different model dynamics are distinguished by their effects on two important quantities: fixation probability and fixation time. The isothermal theorem declares that the fixation probability is the same for a wide range of graphs and it only depends on the population size. This has also been proved for more complex graphs that are called complex networks. In this work, we propose a model that couples the population dynamics to the network structure and show that in this case, the isothermal theorem is being violated. In our model the death rate of a mutant depends on its number of neighbors, and neutral drift holds only in the average. We investigate the fixation probability behavior in terms of the complexity parameter, such as the scale-free exponent for the scale-free network and the rewiring probability for the small-world network.

One of the methods of repairing the damaged bone is the fabrication of porous scaffold using synergic methods like three-dimensional (3D) printing and freeze-drying technology. These techniques improve the damaged and fracture parts rapidly for better healing bone lesions using bioactive ceramic and polymer. This research, due to the need to increase the mechanical strength of 3D bone scaffolds for better mechanical performance. Akermanite bioceramic as a bioactive and calcium silicate bioceramic has been used besides the polymeric component. In this study, the porous scaffolds were designed using solid work with an appropriate porosity with a Gyroid shape. The prepared Gyroid scaffold was printed using a 3D printing machine with Electroconductive Polylactic Acid (EC-PLA) and then coated with a polymeric solution containing various amounts of akermanite bioceramic as reinforcement. The mechanical and biological properties were investigated according to the standard test. The mechanical properties of the porous-coated scaffold showed stress tolerance up to 30 MPa. The maximum strain obtained was 0.0008, the maximum stress was 32 MPa and the maximum displacement was 0.006 mm. Another problem of bone implants is the impossibility of controlling bone cancer and tumor size. To solve this problem, an electroconductive filament containing Magnetic Nanoparticles (MNPs) is used to release heat and control cancer cells. The mechanical feature of the porous scaffold containing 10 wt% akermanite was obtained as the highest stress tolerance of about 32 MPa with 46% porosity. Regarding the components and prepare the bony scaffold, the MNPs release heat when insert into the magnetic field and control the tumor size which helps the treatment of cancer. In general, it can be concluded that the produced porous scaffold using 3D printing and freeze-drying technology can be used to replace broken bones with the 3D printed EC-PLA coated with 10 wt% akermanite bioceramic with sufficient mechanical and biological behavior for the orthopedic application.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are compounds that are used in the bottle as the main plasticizers. Therefore, the possibility of releasing phthalate esters into beverages is very high and there is a concern to consumer health and monitoring organizations. The aim of this research was to assess the phthalic acid esters (di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), bis(di-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and total PAEs) in bottled non-alcoholic malt beverages (n = 120) by multi-walled carbon nanotubes were magnetized with iron (MWCNT-Fe3O4) using gaschromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that the highest and the lowest levels of total phthalate esters in samples were 9483.93 and 2412.50 ng/L, respectively. The mean of DEHP which has also been found to be carcinogenic in all samples was lower than 5944.73 ng/L. The highest concentration of DEHP in four samples was upper than 8957.87 ng/L. Perceived limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 13 to 30 ng/L and the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 39 to 90 ng/L. Multivariate techniques and heat map visualization were used to assess the correlation among the type and levels of PAEs with the brand, color, product date, pH, sugar, volume, and gas pressure. Therefore, based on heat map and principal component analysis (PCA) results, the DEHP and total PAEs were the closest accessions, indicating that these variables had similar trends. Based on the results, it can be stated that due to the low average of total phthalate esters in non-alcoholic malt beverages, there is no serious health hazard of these compounds for humans.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is characterized by complications such as pain, paresthesia, and numbness in the fingers. There are some surgical therapies for the management of severe carpal tunnel, but differences exist between the treatments available for creating the opposition. The current study was conducted to compare the effect of modified Camitz and BRAND techniques on thumb opposition in patients with severe CTS. METHODS: A total of 40 patients with severe CTS who were candidates for opponensplasty were enrolled in this clinical trial study at Alzahra and Kashani hospitals, Isfahan, Iran, from 2014 to 2018. The patients were divided into two groups of modified Camitz and BRAND. Quick DASH-9 and Kapandji scores as well as pulp and side pinch and pronation angle were assessed before and after the surgeries. RESULTS: Quick DASH-9 score, Kapandji score, pulp and side pinch and pronation angle significantly improved post-operatively (P=0.0XXX, P=0.0XXX, P=0.0XXX, P=0.0XXX, and P=0.0XXX, respectively). But, no significant differences were seen in the mentioned variables between both groups pre and post-operative (P>0.05, for all the studied variables). No postsurgical complications were seen in any of the groups. CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study demonstrated that, both Modified Camitz and BRAND techniques are effective and safe techniques, yielding high improvements, but no serious complications. Both techniques can be considered for treatment of patients with severe CTS.

Cisplatin is used as a chemotherapy drug in the treatment of various types of cancer. Mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation have been identified as major mechanisms of cisplatin nephrotoxicity. The present study investigated the protective effects of pure gallic acid and nanoparticle gallic acid nanoparticles (nano-gallic acid) on cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity. Nano-gallic acid was prepared by double emulsions-solvent evaporation technique using Eudragit RS 100 polymer and polyvinyl alcohol as carrier. Then, the physicochemical characterization of the nanoparticles was examined. In the present study, renal mitochondria were isolated using different centrifugal methods. Our data indicated that the doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg gallic acid and 10 mg/kg nano-gallic acid significantly decreased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, mitochondrial membrane damage (ΔΨm), mitochondrial malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and significantly increased mitochondrial glutathione (GSH), mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), mitochondrial glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and mitochondrial catalase compared to the cisplatin treated group. Histopathological studies also confirmed biochemical tests. Finally, our results confirmed that the pure gallic acid and its nanoparticle improved renal oxidative stress, inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction in acute nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin in rat. Nano-gallic acid (10 mg/kg) was selected as the most effective dose. The findings of this study showed the superiority of nano-gallic acid against pure gallic acid. In conclusion, nano-gallic acid-loaded Eudragit-RS 100 as a novel antioxidant can be considered in the treatment of renal complications of cisplatin.
