RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of several risk/protective factors and predictors on the prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infections in 302 stray cats captured during a trap-neuter-release programme in a mixed urban-rural area from Belgium, from 2010 to 2012. The impact of selective removal of FIV-positive cats on the apparent prevalence in the remaining population over this three-year period was also assessed. The seroprevalences over three years were 18.8 per cent for FIV and 0.7 per cent for FeLV. For FIV, the seroprevalence decreased significantly from the first year of the programme (2010; 30.5 per cent) to the last (2012; 13.1 per cent). Sex (male) and age (adult and old cats) were risk factors, while the year of sampling (years 2011 and 2012) was a protective factor. Age, sex and location were the most relevant predictors of FIV status. The data presented in this study revealed a very high FIV seroprevalence in Belgian stray cats, while FeLV was almost absent. The selective removal of positive cats had a drastic effect on the FIV seroprevalence in the remaining cat population.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess morphologic and metabolic abnormalities in dogs with early left ventricular dysfunction (ELVD) induced by rapid right ventricular pacing (RRVP). ANIMALS: 7 Beagles. PROCEDURE: Plasma carnitine concentrations were measured before and after development of ELVD induced by RRVP. At the same times, transvenous endomyocardial biopsy was performed, and specimens were submitted for determination of myocardial carnitine concentrations and histologic, morphometric, and ultrastructural examination. RESULTS: In 4 dogs in which baseline plasma total carnitine concentration was normal, RRVP induced a decrease in myocardial total and free carnitine concentrations and an increase in myocardial esterified carnitine concentration. In 3 dogs in which baseline plasma total carnitine concentration was low, plasma and myocardial carnitine concentrations were unchanged after pacing. Structural changes associated with pacing included perinuclear vacuolization in 3 dogs. Morphometric analyses indicated there was a decrease in myofiber cross-sectional diameter and area following pacing. Electron microscopy revealed changes in myofibrils and mitochondria following pacing. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that moderate to severe alterations in myocyte cytoarchitecture are present in dogs with ELVD induced by RRVP and that in dogs with normal plasma carnitine concentrations, myocardial carnitine deficiency may be a biochemical marker of ELVD. Results also indicated that transvenous endomyocardial biopsy can be used to evaluate biochemical and structural myocardial changes in dogs with cardiac disease.

RESUMO

A case of concurrent canine systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and generalized bacterial infection in a six-year-old female Beauceron is reported. The dog presented with purulent nasal and ocular discharges, skin lesions (including seborrhea, hyperkeratotic areas, and papules as well as ecchymoses around the eyes, on both sides of the pinnae, and on the vulva), generalized lymph node enlargement, a mitral murmur, and lameness. Later, facial swelling, a retrobulbar abscess, and a cough also developed. Occurrence of a generalized bacterial infection was established by culture of group-C, beta-hemolytic Streptococcus from the throat, the mouth, a biopsy site (popliteal lymph node area), the retrobulbar abscess, and the lung. The diagnosis of SLE was based on the clinical signs and particularly on the occurrence of antinuclear antibody (ANA) and antidoublestranded-desoxyribonucleic acid (ds-DNA) antibody. Interestingly, the latter type of antibodies were also detected in two young female puppies whelped by this dog. Salient histological findings included an extreme cell depletion of the lymph nodes and spleen and severe pneumonitis and peribronchiolitis. The results of this case indicate that a definite diagnosis of canine SLE can, at times, be made on the basis of the presence of serum ANA and ds-DNA antibodies.

RESUMO

A three-year-old male golden retriever had had progressive dyspnoea, exercise intolerance, stridor, and a modified bark for five months. A mass 2 cm in diameter was present dorsal to the right side of the larynx. Histological examination revealed cross-striations in some elongated cells, consistent with a diagnosis of rhabdomyoma, a diagnosis which was confirmed by positive immunohistochemical staining for myoglobin and desmin. The mass could not be removed without total laryngectomy and a permanent tracheostomy and the dog was euthanased.

RESUMO

A Pasteurella haemolytica A1 broth was injected intratracheally in eight calves and measurements of pulmonary function values (PFV) were made once before and hourly post inoculation (p.i.). Changes in PFVs, included increased respiratory rate and minute ventilation (up to 158% of baseline 2 h p.i.) and decreased tidal volume and lung dynamic compliance (up to 33% of baseline 3 h p.i.). Total pulmonary resistance was not affected. At and after 3 h p.i. there was a progressive impairement of gas exchange, as judged from arterial O2 tension which decreased up to 65% of baseline. In contrast, arterial CO2 tension was not affected. Pulmonary hypertension was observed during the 3 last h of the study and was attributable to an increased pulmonary vascular resistance. Severe neutropenia was observed at 3 h p.i. and post-mortem histological findings were consistent with an acute fibrinohemorragic bronchopneumonia. In conclusion, P. haemolytica airway challenge unequiovocally resulted in acute pneumonia, providing a reproducible pathophysiological model for investigations regarding new therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

Whereas reliable measurements of diaphragmatic force and electrical activity are now available in calves, evidence that substrate contents in the bovine diaphragm can be accurately measured is still lacking. The purposes of the present study were therefore a) to describe and test the reliability of methods and procedures used for sampling, lyophilisation, extraction and dosage of muscular lactate, glycogen and creatine contents and b) to report the variation in their levels found along the bovine diaphragm and among individuals. The repeatability of the results yielded by a) assaying the extracts, b) processing and assaying the extracts and c) taking samples at different sites in the muscle was assessed. Neither assay, nor processing effects were significant (P < or = 0.05). Substrates were found to be homogeneously distributed within the two muscles studied. Substrate contents expressed per unit of muscle weight or total creatine were neither more or less variable than when expressed per unit of dry matter.
