RESUMO

In this work, we have developed a method for the preparation of pH-responsive track-etched membranes (TeMs) based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with pore diameters of 2.0 ± 0.1 µm of cylindrical shape by RAFT block copolymerization of styrene (ST) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) to be used in the separation of water-oil emulsions. The influence of the monomer concentration (1-4 vol%), the molar ratio of RAFT agent: initiator (1:2-1:100) and the grafting time (30-120 min) on the contact angle (CA) was studied. The optimal conditions for ST and 4-VP grafting were found. The obtained membranes showed pH-responsive properties: at pH 7-9, the membrane was hydrophobic with a CA of 95°; at pH 2, the CA decreased to 52°, which was due to the protonated grafted layer of poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP), which had an isoelectric point of pI = 3.2. The obtained membranes with controlled hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties were tested by separating the direct and reverse "oil-water" emulsions. The stability of the hydrophobic membrane was studied for 8 cycles. The degree of purification was in the range of 95-100%.

RESUMO

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains the most common cancer among males in Sri Lanka. Metastasis to neck is a crucial prognostic factor. A modified radical/radical neck dissection including levels I -V, was performed in patients with OSCC who had a clinically positive neck (cN+). Currently, evidence suggests that sparing level V in a cN+ may be justified due to less chance of metastasis in early stages of the disease. To the best of our knowledge, the incidence of metastasis to level V in patients with cN+s has not been previously investigated in a Sri Lankan context. We aimed to determine level V lymph node metastasis and related clinicopathological indicators in cN+s in patients with OSCC. A multicentre retrospective study investigated postoperative biopsy reports of 187 patients for five years. OSCC patients with cN+s who underwent neck dissections of levels I-V were included. Only 6.4% of patients had histopathologically positive level V lymph nodes. A total of 127 lymph nodes were harvested from level V of those who showed level V positivity and out of them 68 were positive with a third of cases showing extranodal extension (ENE). The buccal mucosa (n=4) and lateral aspect of the anterior two thirds of the tongue (n=4) were the common primary sites for level V metastasis. In patients who showed positivity in levels III and IV, a considerably higher probability of level V nodes being positive was seen, which was statistically significant (p = 0.0001). We have concluded that the routine performance of a modified radical/radical neck dissection for cN+s should be stopped, as the incidence of Level V positivity is significantly low. Assessing the cN+ for N stage, status of levels III and IV, pattern of invasion, differentiation, and the site may be used instead as predictors for level V positivity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Brain tumors are the most common solid tumor in children. The prevalence of survivors from these cancers has been increasing, presenting endocrine sequelae in more than 40% of the cases. Our aim was to characterize the endocrinopathies diagnosed in this population, exploring the outcomes of growth hormone treatment. METHODS: We have performed a retrospective analysis of the survivors that were followed-up through a close protocol at our endocrine late-effects clinic. RESULTS: 242 survivors, followed during 6.4 (0-23.4) years, were considered. The median age at tumor diagnosis was 6.7 (0-18) years and pilocytic astrocytoma was the most frequent neoplasm (33.5%). The prevalence of endocrinopathies was of 71.5%, with growth hormone deficiency being the most frequent (52.9%). An indirect correlation between the age at the beginning of somatropin and growth velocity in the first year of treatment was observed. Those treated with craniospinal radiotherapy presented a smaller final upper/lower segments ratio comparing with those that only received cranial radiotherapy. However, their final height was not compromised when compared to their family height target. We found pubertal delay in 12%; accelerated/precocious puberty in 13.2%; central and primary hypogonadism in 21.9% and 3.3%, respectively; primary and central hypothyroidism in 23.6% and 14.5%, respectively; thyroid nodules in 7.4%; ACTH deficiency in 10.3% and diabetes insipidus in 12%. CONCLUSION: This study reveals a higher prevalence of endocrinopathies in brain tumors survivors and explores the influence of craniospinal irradiation in the adult body proportions. It reinforces the importance of routine follow-up among survivors.

RESUMO

This study examined the effects of exogenous hCG administration on ovarian function and pregnancy rates in estrous-induced dairy goats during the transition into the breeding season. Eighty-six Toggenburg does received 60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate intravaginal sponge for 6 d plus 200 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin and 30 µg of d-cloprostenol i.m. 24 h before sponge removal, and were then bred for 96 h. Seven days (D7) after first mating the does received either 1 mL of saline (the control group, n = 43) or 300 IU of hCG (the hCG-treated group, n = 43) i.m. Transrectal ovarian ultrasonography (B-mode and color Doppler) was performed on D7, D13, D17, and D21 and ultrasonographic pregnancy detection on D30. Pregnancy rate was higher (P < 0.05) in hCG-treated goats (90.7%; 39/43) than that in control animals (74.4%; 32/43). Accessory luteal structures (ALSs) were detected in 46.5% (20/43) of hCG-treated does. All hCG-treated does that had ALSs and 82.6% of goats without ALS post-treatment remained pregnant. The total luteal area increased (P < 0.05) from D7 to D13 in pregnant animals of both groups, whereas mean vascular area declined (P < 0.05) by D21 in all nonpregnant does. Serum progesterone concentrations increased (P < 0.05) on D21 in pregnant goats of both groups, but they were related to changes in luteal tissue content only in control does throughout the present study. Mean daily numbers of small- and medium-sized antral follicles decreased (P < 0.05) only in pregnant animals of both groups with a decline in medium follicle numbers occurring earlier in hCG-treated (D13) compared with control does (D17). To summarize, a single dose of hCG given on D7 after estrus was followed by a decrease in the number of medium-sized antral follicles in gestating hCG-treated does, induced the formation of ALSs in ~47% of all hCG-treated does, and significantly increased the pregnancy rate in estrous-induced Toggenburg goats in the transition to the breeding season.

RESUMO

This study set out to determine normal values for acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography of the superficial digital flexor tendon, deep digital flexor tendon, accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon and suspensory ligament in horses. Twenty-four horses were submitted to conventional sonographic assessment and elastography imaging (quantitative ARFI method) of distal forelimb tendons and ligaments at nine anatomical regions. Elastograms depicted tendons and ligaments in orange to red tones consistent with greater stiffness. Shear wave velocity was higher in the longitudinal compared to the cross-sectional plane but did not differ significantly between the left and right forelimbs. The suspensory ligament was stiffer compared to remaining structures in the cross-sectional plane. Ligaments were stiffer than tendons and the deep digital flexor tendon was stiffer than the superficial digital flexor tendon in the longitudinal plane. Target structures were stiffer in male compared to female horses and stiffness tended to increase with age. ARFI elastography proved to be a feasible and reproducible imaging modality for assessment of distal forelimb tendons and ligaments in horses. Qualitative features derived from stiffness quantification in these structures can be applied to horses with musculoskeletal disorders, as well as to other animal species.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate through three-dimensional kinematic analysis the influence of occlusal adjustment by tooth wear in masticatory biomechanics of horses. Seven clinically healthy thoroughbred Arabian horses with strong occlusal irregularities were used, of which seven castrated males and one female of between seven and nineteen years of age. Three digital video cameras and seven spherical reflective markers placed on the horses' face were employed. The animals were filmed twice in succession: while chewing hay before and after the occlusal adjustment by tooth wear. Following that, kinematic analysis was made of the movements obtained by means of the images which were synchronized, segmented and reconstructed three-dimensionally with the help of Dvideow program. Mathematical functions were applied in Matlab environment for obtaining the values of the amplitudes of movements. The results of the biomechanical analysis showed that the occlusal adjustment increases the range of mandibular movements in horses.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the blood leukocytes and the MMP-2 and -9 expression in the hoof laminar tissue of horses undergoing intraluminal small colon obstruction. Laparotomy and the small colon obstruction was performed in eight healthy horses, inserting a ball in the intestinal lumen. The ball was inflated to 80 mmHg pressure and the occlusion was maintained for 4 hours. The blood was collectedBlood samples were taken before the obstruction (M0), immediately after intestinal clearance (M4), and every 12 hours until completeuntil 72 hours (M12, M24, M36, M48, M60 and M72). The hoof biopsies were performed at M0, M4, and M72 and the samples were subjected to zymography analysis. There was an increase in leukocytes in M12 and M24, due to the increase in segmented neutrophils and band neutrophils, which decreased as of M36. According to zymography technique not observed changes were not not observed in MMP-2 and -9, possibly due to the low intensity of the small colon lesions. Wherefore, it is concludedIn conclusion, that the inflammatory changes resulting from small colon obstruction were not enough to cause changes in the expression of MMP-2 and -9 in the hoof laminar tissue.(AU)

RESUMO

Foetal oral teratoma or epignathus is a rare benign condition that originates in the oropharyngeal region. The term 'teratoma' refers to a mass composed of poorly organized tissues derived from each of the three germ layers. Epignathus may occur when one twin ceases development during gestation and becomes vestigial to the fully formed dominant twin. The reported incidence of epignathus is approximately 1:35,000 to 1:200,000 live births. A unique case of partial facial duplication with gross histological and radiological evidence of partial duplication of the facial elements and organs is presented herein. The affected newborn baby underwent urgent surgery due to breathing difficulties. The mass was excised successfully and the infant made an uneventful recovery. The resected specimen included two developing faces, each composed of a developing mandible and maxilla with developing tooth buds. Tissues from all three germ layers were present. In such cases, the treatment option is exclusively surgical, and complete resection is curative in most cases during the early neonatal period.

Endurance is an equestrian modality that demands high requirement of organic systems in order to maintain organism's homeostasis. This study aimed to evaluate hydroelectrolyte and acid-base balance during an endurance test performed by FEI* horses. Nine horses were subjected to three months of training and, at the end, performed a test similar to the official competitions of equestrian endurance, with 80 km of distance, divided into four stages. Clinical and blood samples were taken for analysis of lactate concentration and blood gas parameters before the start of the test, immediately after the arrival of each phase and, after 15, 30 minutes, 1, 4, 6 and 12 hours after the end of the race. Only five animals completed the race and the data from these animals were used for statistical analysis. There was predominance of aerobic metabolism and the horses showed a good recovery rate. The electrolytes chloride, sodium, potassium and calcium had their concentration decreased while bicarbonate increased with the course of the exercise. There was an increase in pH due to the development of mixed alkalosis, characterized by hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis and respiratory alkalosis. Good performance of the animals was attributed to sufficient metabolic adaptation induced by training.(AU)

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Oro-facial clefts involving the palate is the commonest structural defect causing velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and poor intelli gibility of speech. Proper repair of the soft palateis a surgical challenge. Posterior-based buccinator myomucosal flap (BMF) is used to lengthen the soft palate of patients who undergo primary palatoplasty at Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya (THK). BMF is a good choice for the repair of medium sized mucosal defects in the oral cavity since it has appropriate thickness, contains mucous membrane with mucous glands and has a rich blood supply. Objectives To assess improvement in quality of speech after soft palate repair using BMF in patients with previously corrected cleft pate. METHODS: Thirty four patients (M:F-1:1) who had undergone palatal lengthening using BMF procedure for correction of VPI for speech improvement at Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya from 2010 to 2012, were assessed before and one year after surgery for quality of speech. RESULTS: All patients below 8 years showed significant reduction of hypernasality (p<0.05), whereas only 60% of patients above 8 years showed reduction after the surgery. All patients showed reduction in nasal air emission and in consonant production error at least by one consonant. The group below 8 years showed more improvement in speech quality after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Palatal lengthening using BMF procedure is a good treatment option for correction of VPI.

RESUMO

Several imaging tests are used to stage gastric cancer; however the accuracy in the detection of peritoneal metastases is still low. Staging laparoscopy in gastric cancer has shown good results compared to imaging tests, particularly in patients with locally advanced disease signs. A search was conducted on electronic databases, and the studies were selected by methodological quality, inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using the Meta-Disc software version 1.4 to: describe primary results and explore homogeneity; explore threshold effect; calculate the sensitivity and specificity, negative and positive likelihood ratios; calculate the diagnostic odds ratio (DOR); and the summary ROC (sROC) curve. Five primary studies with a total of 240 participants were obtained. The overall sensitivity was 84.6%, and the overall specificity was 100%. The sensitivity and specificity homogeneity tests showed a Q value of 2.51 (P < 0.6434) with I(2) = 0, and Q = 0% (P = 1.0), I(2) = 0%, respectively. The DOR was 291.31 and positive and negative likelihood ratios were 0.197 and 49.711, respectively; while the AUC obtained by sROC was 98%. Staging laparoscopy shows good accuracy in the detection of peritoneal metastases and is an important diagnostic tool in the staging of gastric cancer.

RESUMO

The clinical outcome of patients with OSCC is assessed based on TNM system and currently it is the most reliable indicator on which therapeutic decisions are made. The patients with advanced disease are managed with combined treatment modalities. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the factors which influence survival of patients with OSCC in Sri Lanka. Four hundred and thirty patients who have been managed surgically using either (1) local excision, (2) local excision+supraomohyoid neck dissection, (3) local excision+modified radical neck dissection, (4) local excision+radical neck dissection, (5) local excision+contra-lateral neck dissection depending on TNM stage, with or without post-operative radiotherapy. Patients with incompletely excised tumours showed statistically significant poor survival which improved with radiotherapy (stage II P=0.002, stage III P=0.017). With reference to TNM stage IV tumours, the patients who had received surgical option 4, showed poor survival compared to surgical options 2, 3, and 5 (P=0.001). However, within the group of patients who had received surgical option 4, those who had nodal metastasis showed poorer survival compared to patients without nodal metastasis. In addition, survival improved in patients who had been treated with surgical option 4, with radiotherapy. Furthermore, margin status was also found to significantly influence the survival of patients with TNM stage IV tumours (P=0.003). The main factors that had significant impact on the survival were TNM stage, nodal metastasis and the state of excision margins.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects caused by L-DOPA on cardiovascular and autonomic parameters in an animal model of Parkinsonism induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to bilateral microinfusion of 6-OHDA or saline (sham group) in the substantia nigra, and treated by gavage with L-DOPA or water for 7 days after surgery. On the 6th day the rats were subjected to femoral artery catheterization for cardiovascular recording. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were evaluated at baseline and during head up tilt (HUT) protocol. Spectral analysis of cardiovascular variability was performed using the V2.4 CardioSeries software v2.4. The lesion was quantified by dopamine levels in the striatum. RESULTS: Dopamine levels in the striatum were decreased in 6-OHDA rats (sham: 4.79 ± 0.49 ng/mg; 6-OHDA: 1.99 ± 0.68 ng/mg) and were not recovered by Prolopa treatment. Baseline values of MAP and HR were not different between groups. HUT induced an increase in MAP and HR (ΔMAP: 17 ± 1 mm Hg, ΔHR: 39 ± 4 bpm) that were attenuated in 6-OHDA and in Prolopa treated animals. At baseline, the systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variance was lower in the 6-OHDA AND sham prolopa groups. Spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity was higher at baseline in the 6-OHDA group as compared to all studied groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that treatment with Prolopa did not interfere with cardiovascular variables at baseline. However, during HUT, the 6-OHDA and Prolopa control animals presented a lower cardiovascular compensation, suggesting a possible autonomic impairment in Parkinsonism induced by 6-OHDA.

RESUMO

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has been identified as the main cause for outflow of acid water and radioactive/non-radioactive contaminants. AMD encompasses pyrites oxidation when water and oxygen are available. AMD was identified in uranium waste rock piles (WRPs) of Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil-Caldas facility (Brazilian uranium mine), resulting in high costs for water treatment. AMD reduction is the main challenge, and scientific investigation has been conducted to understand oxygen and water transportation within WRPs, where 222Rn is used as natural tracer for oxygen transportation. The study consists of soil radon gas mapping in the top layer of WRP4 using active soil gas pumping, radon adsorption in active charcoal and 222Rn determination using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. A sampling network of 71 points was built where samples were collected at a depth of 40 cm. RESUMO

CONTEXT: Ethnozoological studies have shown that Spilotes pullatus Linn. (Colubridae: Ophidia), is associated with medicinal and magic-religious uses in Brazil. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine the chemical composition of the oil extracted from the body fat of S. pullatus and to test its antimicrobial properties, alone and in association with aminoglycosides, against fungi and bacterial strains in concentrations ranging between 1024 and 0.5 µg/mL. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The snakes were collected in the Chapada do Araripe, county of Crato, Ceará State, Brazil. The oil was extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus using hexane. The methyl esters of the fatty acids present in the samples were identified using GC-MS. The antimicrobial and drug modulatory activities of oil were tested by microdilution against fungal and bacterial strains. RESULTS: The chemical composition of the fixed oils of S. pullatus identified 10 constituents representing 94.97% of the total sample. The percentages of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were 33.59 and 61.38%, respectively, with the most abundant components being elaidic (37.26%). The oil did not demonstrate any antimicrobial or antifungal activity when tested alone, presenting MIC values ≥ 1024 µg/mL. However, when associated with antibiotics, it demonstrated synergistic effects with gentamicin against all the bacterial lineages assayed, and antagonistic effects with amikacin and neomycin against strains of Escherichia coli. CONCLUSIONS: Oil extracted from the body fat of S. pullatus did not demonstrate any inhibitory effects on bacterial or fungal activities, but was effective in modulating the effects of certain antibiotics.

RESUMO

The anaerobic threshold is a physiologic event studied in various species. There are various methods for its assessment, recognized in the human and equine exercise physiology literature, several of these involving the relationship between blood lactate concentration (LAC) and exercise load, measured in a standardized exercise test. The aim of this study was to compare four of these methods: V2, V4, individual anaerobic threshold (IAT) and lactate minimum speed (LMS) with the method recognized as the gold standard for the assessment of anaerobic threshold, maximal lactate steady-state (MLSS). The five tests were carried out in thirteen trained Arabian horses, in which velocities and associated LAC could be measured. The mean velocities and the LAC associated with the anaerobic threshold for the five methods were respectively: V2 = 9.67±0.54; V4 = 10.98±0.47; V IAT = 9.81±0.72; V LMS = 7.50±0.57 and V MLSS = 6.14±0.45m.s-1 and LAC IAT = 2.17±0.93; LAC LMS = 1.17±0.62 and LAC MLSS = 0.84±0.21mmol.L-1. None of the velocities were statistically equivalent to V MLSS (P<0.05). V2, V4 and V LMS showed a good correlation with V MLSS , respectively: r = 0.74; r = 0.78 and r = 0.83, and V IAT did not significantly correlate with V MLSS. Concordance between the protocols was relatively poor, i.e., 3.28±1.00, 4.84±0.30 and 1.43±0.32m.s-1 in terms of bias and 95% agreement limits for V2, V4 and LMS methods when compared to MLSS. Only LAC LMS did not differ statistically from LAC MLSS. Various authors have reported the possibility of the assessment of anaerobic threshold using rapid protocols such as V4 and LMS for humans and horses. This study corroborates the use of these tests, but reveals that adjustments in the protocols are necessary to obtain a better concordance between the tests and the MLSS.

The objective of this study was to assess the reproductive response of adult and prepubertal goats subjected to repeated laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU). The study animals were divided into two groups, specifically, adult nanny goats (GA, n=10) and prepubertal nanny goats (GP, n=10), which were subjected to estrous synchronization and ovarian stimulation for LOPU. Both groups underwent six LOPU procedures at seven-day intervals and were subsequently subjected to controlled mating and pregnancy diagnosis to evaluate their future fertility. The study showed a reduction in the number of follicles visualized and in the amount and quality of the oocytes that were recovered and exposed to in vitro maturation. As indicated by the fertility test, however, no complications were found during the laparoscopic procedures that would impair the reproductive future of the animals. Therefore, a viable number of oocytes were obtained even with the decreased reproductive efficiency, proving that repeated LOPUs do not interfere with the reproductive of adult and prepubertal nanny goats. These results indicate a positive aspect of this procedure, allowing for increasing reproductive performance of this kind, when used for the production in vitro.

We studied infestation rates and parasite-host associations between streblid flies and phyllostomid bats in an Atlantic Forest area of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. We captured 301 individuals from seven Phyllostomidae bat species. Out of that total, 69 bats had been parasitised by nine Streblidae species; the most frequent species were Trichobius joblingi and Trichobius tiptoni. The species Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with Anoura geoffroyi, was the most frequent species. The highest mean intensity was observed for Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with A. geoffroyi, and Paratrichobius longicrus associated with Artibeus lituratus, both ectoparasite species with a mean intensity of five individuals per bat. Trichobius joblingi exhibited the highest mean abundance, which was over three on its host species. Streblid richness in the study area was similar to the richness found in other studies carried out in the Atlantic Forest. We observed that streblid richness in this biome depends more on inherent characteristics of each physiognomy and on the host-species than on the sampling effort.
