BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a chronic, multifactorial clinical condition characterized by sustained high blood pressure levels. It is often associated with functional-structural alterations of target organs, which include heart, brain, kidneys, and vasculature. OBJECTIVE: This study highlights the recent correlation between the immune system and hypertension and its repercussions on target-organ damage. METHODS: The descriptors used for the search of the study were "hypertension", "immunity", and "target organs". The methodology of the study followed the main recommendations of the PRISMA statement. RESULTS: The damage to the vasculature arises mainly from the migration of T cells and monocytes that become pro-inflammatory in the adventitia, releasing TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-17, which induce endothelial damage and hinder vascular relaxation. In the renal context, the inflammatory process associated with hypertension culminates in renal invasion by leukocytes, which contribute to the injury of this organ by mechanisms of intense sympathetic stimulation, activation of the reninangiotensin system, sodium retention, and aggravation of oxidative stress. In the cardiac context, hypertension increases the expression of pro-inflammatory elements, such as B, T, and NK cells, in addition to the secretion of IFN-γ, IL-17, IL-23, and TNF-α from angiotensin II, reactive oxygen species, and aldosterone. This pro-inflammatory action is also involved in brain damage through SphK1. In view of the above, the participation of the immune system in hypertension-induced injuries seems to be unequivocal. CONCLUSION: Therefore, understanding the multifactorial mechanisms related to hypertension will certainly allow for more efficient interventions in this condition, preventing target organ damage.

INTRODUCTION: Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are growing globally. Understanding patterns of cerebrovascular disease in CALD communities may improve health outcomes through culturally specific interventions. We compared rates of transient ischaemic attack (TIA)/stroke (ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage) and stroke risk factor prevalence in overseas and Australian-born people in South Western Sydney (SWS) and New South Wales (NSW). METHODS: This was a 10-year retrospective analysis (2011-2020) of SWS and NSW age-standardized rates per 100,000 person-years of TIA/stroke. Data were extracted from Health Information Exchange and Secure Analytics for Population Health Research and Intelligence systems. Rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atrial fibrillation (AF), smoking, and obesity were also calculated. RESULTS: The SWS and NSW age-standardized rate of TIA/stroke for people born in Australia was 100 per 100,000 person-years (100/100,000/year). In SWS, 56.6% of people were overseas-born compared to 29.8% for NSW. The age-standardized rate of TIA/stroke for Polynesian-born people was more than double that of Australian-born people (p < 0.001). Hypertension (33 [SWS] vs. 27/100,000/year [NSW]) and T2DM (36 [SWS] vs. 26/100,000/year [NSW]) were the most common risk factors with rates >50/100,000/year (hypertension) and >80/100,000/year (T2DM) for people born in Polynesia, Melanesia, and Central America. Rates of T2DM, AF, and obesity for Polynesian-born people were over threefold greater than people born in Australia. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Greater rates of TIA/stroke were observed in specific CALD communities, with increased rates of cerebrovascular risk factors. Culturally specific, targeted interventions may bridge health inequalities in cerebrovascular disease.

Reflex-ontogeny and intestinal morphometrics were evaluated in Wistar rats whose mothers were fed on a high-fat diet during the perinatal period. Male pups (n=52) formed four experimental groups: NN (pups from mothers with lab chow diet during gestation and lactation); NH (pups from mothers with lab chow diet during pregnancy and high-fat in lactation); HH (pups from mothers with high-fat diet during gestation and lactation); HN (pups from mothers with high-fat diet during pregnancy and lab chow in lactation). The reflex ontogeny, the maturation of physical characteristics and parameters of somatic growth were evaluated during lactation. In addition, the body mass index (BMI), the specific rate of weight gain (SRWG), the Lee index, the weight of the brain and intestinal parameters were analyzed after weaning. High-fat diet during pregnancy (HH and HN groups) delayed the maturation of reflexes and physical characteristics. The high-fat diet affected somatic growth differently, reducing somatic growth parameters in the groups NH and HH and increasing in the HN group. The highest SRWG was found in group HN. SRWG and BMI were reduced in the groups NH and HH. The relative intestinal weight was reduced in the groups NH, HH and HN. The relative length of small intestine was longer in group HN than in group NN. The total height of the mucosa and size of the villous were lower in group HH than in group NN. In conclusion, high-fat diet promoted negative consequences for the development of the nervous and enteric systems of the offspring(AU)


Ontogenia refleja y morfometría intestinal fueron evaluados en crías de ratas Wistar que fueron alimentadas con una dieta alta en grasas durante el período perinatal. Los descendientes machos (n = 52) formaron cuatro grupos experimentales: NN (hijos de madres que utilizaron alimentos de laboratorio durante la gestación y la lactancia); NH (hijos de madres que comieron dieta de laboratorio durante el embarazo y dieta con un alto contenido de grasas en la lactancia); HH (hijos de madres con una dieta alta en grasas durante el embarazo y la lactancia); HN (hijos de madres que comieron una dieta alta en grasas durante el embarazo y comida de laboratorio durante la lactancia). La ontogenia refleja, la maduración de las características físicas y los parámetros de crecimiento somático durante la lactancia fueron evaluados. Además, el índice de masa corporal (IMC), la tasa específica de aumento de peso (SRWG), el índice de Lee, el peso cerebral y los parámetros intestinales fueron analizados después del destete. La dieta alta en grasas durante el embarazo (grupos HH y HN) retrasó la maduración de reflejos y características físicas. La dieta alta en grasas afectó el crecimiento somático de manera diferente, reduciendo los parámetros de crecimiento somático en los grupos NH y HH y aumentando en el grupo HN. El SRWG más grande se encontró en el grupo HN. El SRWG y el IMC se redujeron en los grupos NH y HH. El peso relativo intestinal se redujo en los grupos NH, HH y HN. La longitud relativa del intestino delgado fue mayor en el grupo HN que en el grupo NN. La altura total de la mucosa y el tamaño de las vellosidades fueron menores en el grupo HH que en el grupo NN. En conclusión, la dieta alta en grasas tuvo consecuencias negativas para el desarrollo de los sistemas nervioso y entérico de la prole(AU)

INTRODUCTION: Coconut oil has been considered as a therapeutic alternative in several pathologies, but there is limited information regarding its effects on brain functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed whether early virgin coconut oil (VCO) supplementation interferes with electrical activity of the adult rat brain and its lipid peroxidation. Moreover, it investigated whether the putative effect on brain electrophysiology could be affected by overnutrition occurring during lactation, and/or by environmental enrichment (EE). Electrophysiology was measured through cortical spreading depression (CSD), a phenomenon related to brain excitability. METHODS: Wistar rats were suckled in litters of either nine or three pups, forming nourished (N) or overnourished (ON) groups, respectively. Between the 7th and 30th days of life, half of the animals in each group received VCO (10 mg kg-1 d-1; by gavage). The other half received an equivalent amount of vehicle (V, 0.009% cremophor). On day 36, animals from both groups were subjected to EE for 4 weeks. At 105 ± 15 days of life, each animal was subjected to CSD recordings and lipid peroxidation analyses. RESULTS: Overnutrition during lactation enhanced body and brain weights. VCO decelerated the CSD propagation velocity (control - 3.57 ± 0.23 mm min-1versus VCO - 3.27 ± 0.18 mm min-1; p < 0.001), regardless of whether subjected to overnourishment or EE exposure. Neither VCO nor EE modified the cerebral lipid peroxidation (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: VCO supplementation impaired the spreading of CSD, indicating reduction of brain excitability. VCO effects occurred regardless of the nutritional state during lactation.

BACKGROUND: Protease inhibitors have been isolated from plants and present several biological activities, including immunomodulatory action. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to evaluate a Moringa oleifera flower trypsin inhibitor (MoFTI) for acute toxicity in mice, hemolytic activity on mice erythrocytes and immunomodulatory effects on mice splenocytes. METHODS: The acute toxicity was evaluated using Swiss female mice that received a single dose of the vehicle control or MoFTI (300 mg/kg, i.p.). Behavioral alterations were observed 15-240 min after administration, and survival, weight gain, and water and food consumption were analyzed daily. Organ weights and hematological parameters were analyzed after 14 days. Hemolytic activity of MoFTI was tested using Swiss female mice erythrocytes. Splenocytes obtained from BALB/c mice were cultured in the absence or presence of MoFTI for the evaluation of cell viability and proliferation. Mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were also determined. Furthermore, the culture supernatants were analyzed for the presence of cytokines and nitric oxide (NO). RESULTS: MoFTI did not cause death or any adverse effects on the mice except for abdominal contortions at 15-30 min after administration. MoFTI did not exhibit a significant hemolytic effect. In addition, MoFTI did not induce apoptosis or necrosis in splenocytes and had no effect on cell proliferation. Increases in cytosolic and mitochondrial ROS release, as well as Δψm reduction, were observed in MoFTI-treated cells. MoFTI was observed to induce TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-10, and NO release. CONCLUSION: These results contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the antitumor potential of MoFTI and its effects on other immunological targets.

The plant Moringa oleifera is used as food and medicine. M. oleifera flowers are source of protein, fiber, and antioxidants, and are used to treat inflammation and tumors. This work evaluated the antitumor activity of the M. oleifera flower trypsin inhibitor (MoFTI) in sarcoma 180-bearing mice. Swiss female mice were inoculated with sarcoma 180 cells. Seven days later, the animals were treated intraperitoneally for 1 week with daily doses of PBS (control) or MoFTI (15 or 30 mg/kg). For toxicity assessment, water and food consumption, body and organ weights, histological alterations, and blood hematological and biochemical parameters were measured. Treatment with MoFTI caused pronounced reduction (90.1%-97.9%) in tumor weight. The tumors of treated animals had a reduced number of secondary vessels and lower gauge of the primary vessels compared to the control. No significant changes were observed in water and food consumption or in body and organ weights. Histopathological analysis did not indicate damage to the liver, kidneys, and spleen. In conclusion, MoFTI showed antitumor potential, with no clear evidence of toxicity.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi leaves have been used in folk medicine due to several properties, including antitumor and analgesic effects. The variable efficacy and adverse effects of analgesic drugs have motivated the search for novel antinociceptive agents. It has been reported that the S. terebinthifolia leaf lectin (SteLL) has antitumor activity against sarcoma 180 in mice. AIM OF THE STUDY: This work aimed to evaluate whether SteLL would reduce cancer pain using an orthotopic tumor model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sarcoma 180 cell suspension was inoculated into the right hind paws of mice, and the treatments (150 mM NaCl, negative control; 10 mg/kg morphine, positive control; or SteLL at 1 and 2 mg/kg) were administered intraperitoneally 24 h after cell inoculation up to 14 days. Spontaneous nociception, mechanical hyperalgesia, and hot-plate tests were performed. Further, the volume and weight of the tumor-bearing paws were measured. RESULTS: SteLL (2 mg/kg) improved limb use during ambulation. The lectin (1 and 2 mg/kg) also inhibited mechanical hyperalgesia and increased the latency time during the hot-plate test. Naloxone was found to reverse this effect, indicating the involvement of opioid receptors. The tumor-bearing paws of mice treated with SteLL exhibited lower volume and weight. CONCLUSION: SteLL reduced hyperalgesia due to sarcoma 180 in the paws of mice, and this effect can be related to its antitumor action.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to analyze whether exposure to environmental enrichment (EE) during the juvenile phase of life interferes with the electrical activity of the adult rat brain. In addition, the present research also investigated whether this putative effect on brain electrical activity could be affected by prior overnutrition during lactation. Electrophysiology was measured through cortical spreading depression (CSD), a phenomenon related to brain excitability. Methods: Wistar rats were suckled in litters of either nine or three pups, forming the nourished (N) or overnourished (ON) groups, respectively. At 36 days old, half of the animals from each nutritional condition were exposed to EE. The other half was kept in the standard environment (SE). At 90-120 days of life, each animal was anesthetized for CSD recordings. Results: Overnutrition during lactation caused increases (p < 0.05) in body and brain weights. The EE decelerated CSD propagation velocity regardless of nutritional state during lactation (p < 0.001). The CSD deceleration in the N-EE group was 23.8% and in the ON-EE group was 15% in comparison with the N-SE and ON-SE groups, respectively. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that EE exposure in the juvenile phase of the rat's life reduced brain excitability, and this effect was observed even if animals were overnourished during lactation. An EE could be considered an adjuvant therapeutic resource to modulate brain excitability.


RESUMO Objetivo: Este estudo analisou se a exposição ao ambiente enriquecido durante a fase juvenil da vida interferiria na atividade elétrica do cérebro de ratos adultos. Além disso, a presente pesquisa também investigou se esse provável efeito na atividade elétrica cerebral poderia ser afetado pela hipernutrição durante a lactação. A eletrofisiologia foi medida através da depressão alastrante cortical, um fenômeno relacionado à excitabilidade cerebral. Métodos: Ratos Wistar foram amamentados em ninhadas de nove ou três filhotes, formando os grupos nutridos ou hipernutridos, respectivamente. Aos 36 dias, metade dos animais de cada condição nutricional foram expostos ao ambiente enriquecido. A outra metade foi mantida na condição de ambiente padrão. Aos 90-120 dias de vida, foram obtidos os registros da depressão alastrante cortical. Resultados: A hipernutrição durante a lactação causou incrementos (p < 0,05) nos pesos corporal e cerebral.O Ambiente Enriquecido desacelerou a velocidade de propagação da depressão alastrante cortical independentemente do estado nutricional durante a lactação (p < 0,001). A desaceleração da depressão alastrante cortical no grupo nutrido/ambiente enriquecido foi de 23,8% e no grupo hipernutrido/ambiente enriquecido foi de 15% em comparação com os grupos nutrido/ambiente padrão e hipernutrido/ambiente padrão, respectivamente. Conclusão: Nossos dados demonstram que a exposição ao ambiente enriquecido na fase juvenil da vida do rato reduz a excitabilidade cerebral, e esse efeito pode ser observado mesmo se os animais estiverem hipernutridos durante a lactação. O ambiente enriquecido pode ser considerado um recurso terapêutico adjuvante para modular a excitabilidade cerebral.

Microglia are known to regulate several aspects of the development of the central nervous system. When microglia colonize the spinal cord, from E11.5 in the mouse embryo, they interact with growing central axons of dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons (SNs), which suggests that they may have some functions in SN development. To address this issue, we analyzed the effects of embryonic macrophage ablation on the early development of SNs using mouse embryo lacking embryonic macrophages (PU.1 knock-out mice) and immune cell ablation. We discovered that, in addition to microglia, embryonic macrophages contact tropomyosin receptor kinase (Trk) C+ SN, TrkB+ SN, and TrkA+ SN peripheral neurites from E11.5. Deprivation of immune cells resulted in an initial reduction of TrkC+ SN and TrkB+ SN populations at E11.5 that was unlikely to be related to an alteration in their developmental cell death (DCD), followed by a transitory increase in their number at E12.5. It also resulted in a reduction of TrkA+ SN number during the developmental period analyzed (E11.5-E15.5), although we did not observe any change in their DCD. Proliferation of cells negative for brain fatty acid-binding protein (BFABP- ), which likely correspond to neuronal progenitors, was increased at E11.5, while their proliferation was decreased at E12.5, which could partly explain the alterations of SN subtype production observed from E11.5. In addition, we observed alterations in the proliferation of glial cell progenitors (BFABP+ cells) in the absence of embryonic macrophages. Our data indicate that embryonic macrophages and microglia ablation alter the development of SNs.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of Murici extract on the brain excitability-dependent phenomenon known as cortical spreading depression (CSD) and on brain oxidative stress. METHODS: Adult and aged Wistar rats were supplemented with murici extract (150 mg/kg/day or 300 mg/kg/day) by gavage for fifteen days. Afterwards, the animals were submitted to a CSD electrophysiological recording and to brain oxidative stress evaluation. RESULTS: Our results showed that aging decreased CSD propagation velocity, catalase activity and glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG) in the brain cortex of the rats, and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The highest dose (300 mg/kg/day) of murici extract accelerated CSD, whereas the lowest (150mg/kg/day) decelerated, in both adult and aged animals. In contrast, aged animals supplemented with murici extract in both doses presented low MDA levels and high GSG/GSSG ratio in comparison to the control-aged animals. CONCLUSION: Murici extract supplementation seems to revert detrimental effects in aged brains and could be considered as a strategy in the treatment of pathologies related to aging and cortical spreading depression.

Abstract Purpose: To investigate the effects of Murici extract on the brain excitability-dependent phenomenon known as cortical spreading depression (CSD) and on brain oxidative stress. Methods: Adult and aged Wistar rats were supplemented with murici extract (150 mg/kg/day or 300 mg/kg/day) by gavage for fifteen days. Afterwards, the animals were submitted to a CSD electrophysiological recording and to brain oxidative stress evaluation. Results: Our results showed that aging decreased CSD propagation velocity, catalase activity and glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG) in the brain cortex of the rats, and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The highest dose (300 mg/kg/day) of murici extract accelerated CSD, whereas the lowest (150mg/kg/day) decelerated, in both adult and aged animals. In contrast, aged animals supplemented with murici extract in both doses presented low MDA levels and high GSG/GSSG ratio in comparison to the control-aged animals. Conclusion: Murici extract supplementation seems to revert detrimental effects in aged brains and could be considered as a strategy in the treatment of pathologies related to aging and cortical spreading depression.

OBJECTIVE: Virgin coconut oil (CO) and treadmill exercise have been reported to improve memory performance in young rats. CO has also been associated with antistress properties in young, stressed mice. Therefore, in this study we aimed to investigate whether CO and treadmill exercise could synergistically ameliorate the effects of chronic stress on anxiety-like behavior and episodic-like memory in young rats. METHODS: The rats received CO and were exercised (Ex) from the 15th to the 45th day of life. The animals were supplemented with CO (10 mL kg-1 day-1) or a vehicle (V, distilled water and 0.009% Cremophor) via oral gavage. The Ex animals were placed for 30 min day-1 on a treadmill, with the speed gradually increasing from the first week to the last. From the 46th to the 54th postnatal day, with the exception of the 51st and the 52nd day, all rats were subjected to restraint stress. Afterwards, all rats underwent the open-field test to evaluate locomotor activity and anxiety-like behavior. To evaluate episodic-like memory, all animals underwent tests to recognize object identity and special location. Lastly, lipid profile and murinometric parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: A two-way ANOVA test followed by a Tukey test demonstrated that the CO&Ex group explored more of the unprotected central area of the OFT (27.04 ± 4.03 s, p < 0.01), when compared to the control group (15.36 ± 2.54 s). CO&Ex spent more time exploring the novel location of the object (71.62 ± 3.04%, p < 0.01), when compared to the control group (58.62 ± 2.48%). DISCUSSION: CO and exercise during lactation can ameliorate the effects of stress on anxiety-like behavior and episodic-like memory in young rats.

AIM: Cancer has emerged as a growing public health problem in many parts of the world. METHODOLOGY: We describe the synthesis of a series of carbohydrate-based isoquinoline-5,8-diones through the 1,4-addition reaction between 5,8-dioxo-5,8-dihydroisoquinoline and aminocarbohydrates. Halogenated quinones were also synthesized. Their inhibitory effects on the proliferation of human cancer cell lines were studied. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: The most promising compound, derived from isoquinoline-5,8-dione, containing ribofuranosidyl ring, was selectively active in vitro against H1299 cancer cells, with 1.7-fold higher activity than that of vinorelbine tartrate. This result suggests that the glycoconjugate in question may constitute a valuable lead compound to design and synthesize a more active and less toxic derivative with respect to the development of a new antitumor substance.

Os cuidados paliativos são uma necessidade urgente e humanitária de natureza global para as pessoas com câncer ou doenças ameaçadoras da vida. Recomenda-se que devam ser ofertados a partir do diagnóstico, associados ou não à terapia curativa, priorizando o manejo dos sintomas físicos, psíquicos, sócio familiares e o apoio espiritual. Para tal, deve ser adaptado às necessidades dos pacientes e suas famílias, acompanhando a progressão da doença até sua eventual fase final. E pode continuar após a morte do paciente através do apoio às famílias em seu processo de luto. A proposta de construir uma politica de cuidados paliativos no âmbito do SUS deve ter uma abordagem que promove a qualidade de vida de pacientes e seus familiares, que enfrentam doenças que ameacem a continuidade da vida, por meio da prevenção e do alívio do sofrimento. Versando na identificação precoce, avaliação e tratamento impecável da dor e outros problemas de natureza física, psíquica, social e espiritual. Os cuidados paliativos ocorrem em diversos níveis de atenção, sendo imprescindível a articulação entre os diversos serviços e as ações realizadas de forma que, independentemente do local onde sejam prestados, estejam voltados ao alcance de um objetivo comum, a melhoria da qualidade de vida e a manutenção da dignidade dos cidadãos brasileiros ao longo do processo de finitude. É necessário que haja articulação da atenção básica com os serviços domiciliares, ambulatoriais especializados e hospitalares, favorecendo o diagnóstico rápido das necessidades dos pacientes e a oferta de tratamento adequado

AIMS: It is well known that in the aging process a variety of physiological functions such as cardiac physiology and energy metabolism decline. Imbalance in production and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may induce oxidative stress. Research shows that oxidative stress is an important factor in the aging process. Studies suggest that É·-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and moderate physical exercise modulate the ROS system. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether É·-3 present in fish oil supplementation coupled with moderate physical training could improve antioxidant and metabolic enzymes in the hearts of adult and aged rats and, if these effects could be associated to glycemia, plasma lipid profile or murinometric parameters. MAIN METHODS: Adult (weighing 315.1±9.3g) and aged rats (weighing 444.5±11.8g) exercised and receive fish oil supplementation for 4weeks. Then they were used to evaluate murinometric parameters, fasting glucose and lipid profile. After this, their hearts were collected to measure the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase-SOD, catalase-CAT, glutathione peroxidase-GPx) and oxidative metabolism marker (citrate synthase-CS activity). KEY FINDINGS: Fish oil supplementation increases HDL concentration and activity of CAT and CS. Moreover, physical training coupled with fish oil supplementation induces additional effects on SOD, GPx and CS activity mainly in aged rats. SIGNIFICANCE: Our data suggest that combined treatment in aged rat hearts improves the antioxidant capacities and metabolic enzyme that can prevent the deleterious effects of aging.

Little is known about the normal immune cell profile in the lungs of infants without pulmonary disease. Normal lung samples obtained at autopsy of 10 infants that died either due to incidental or inflicted causes or non-pulmonary diseases were stained for antibodies against B and T lymphocytes, macrophages, NK cells, cytotoxic cells, dendritic cells and mast cells. Cells were quantified in the airway epithelial layer, inner layer (between the epithelium and the outer smooth muscle border), outer layer (between the outer smooth muscle border and the external limits of the airway) and alveolar septa. Basement membrane or alveolar septa lengths were assessed by image analysis. Results were expressed as cells/mm. The median age of patients was 6.8 months, ranging from 11 to 840 days. The inner layer of the airways was the region with the smallest density of cells. There was a predominance of cells related to the innate immunity such as CD56+, Granzyme B+ and CD68+ cells in the epithelial layer and alveolar parenchyma. The outer layer and the lung parenchyma presented the highest cellular density. There were very few CD4+ T cells or dendritic cells in most of the lung compartments. The numbers of CD3+ T and granzyme B+ cells correlated positively with age. There was a compartmentalization of immune cells along airways and parenchyma, which may be related to the development of innate and acquired lung defense mechanisms.

UNLABELLED: Nutritional conditions early in life constitute one of the environmental factors that can influence brain electrophysiology, as evaluated through the phenomenon denominated as cortical spreading depression (CSD). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of hypercaloric diet intake in different phases of life on CSD features in adult rats. METHODS: Newborn Wistar rats were suckled by dams fed a high-lipid (cafeteria) hypercaloric diet during the lactation period. After suckling, part of the pups remained in the high-lipid diet until the end of the experiment in adulthood (group 'full-life' FL), and the other part received the control (lab chow) diet (group L). A third group received the hypercaloric diet only at adulthood (group Ad). When the animals reached 90-93 days of life, CSD was recorded. RESULTS: CSD propagation velocities (in mm/minute) and CSD amplitudes (in mV) were reduced (P < 0.05) in the groups L (2.77 ± 0.07 and 7.1 ± 2.0 for velocity and amplitude, respectively) and FL (3.05 ± 0.17 and 8.5 ± 1.9), but not in the group Ad (3.36 ± 0.11 and 10.7 ± 2.0), in comparison with a control group (C), fed the lab chow diet during the entire life (3.52 ± 0.18 and 10.8 ± 2.2). DISCUSSION: CSD velocity changes observed in adulthood were associated with the hypercaloric dietary treatment during brain development, constituting evidence in favor of permanent or at least long-lasting electrophysiological effects related to the prevailing nutritional status during the period of brain growth spurt.
