RESUMO

Electroactive filament electrodes were synthesized by wet-spinning of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) followed by femtosecond pulse laser deposition of ZnO (CNF@ZnO). A layer of conducting conjugated polymers was further adsorbed by in situ polymerization of either pyrrole or aniline, yielding systems optimized for electron conduction. The resultant hybrid filaments were thoroughly characterized by imaging, spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance, and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. For the filaments using polyaniline, the measured conductivity was a result of the synergy between the inorganic and organic layers, while the contribution was additive in the case of the systems containing polypyrrole. This observation is rationalized by the occurrence of charge transfer between ZnO and polyaniline but not that with polypyrrole. The introduced conductive hybrid filaments displayed a performance that competes with that of metallic counterparts, offering great promise for next-generation filament electrodes based on renewable nanocellulose.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) that cause most damage include root-knot nematodes (RKNs) which are a major impediment to crop production. Root-knot nematodes, like other parasites, secrete proteins which are required for parasite proliferation and survival within the host during the infection process. RESULTS: Here, we used various computational tools to predict and identify classically and non-classically secreted proteins encoded in the Meloidogyne javanica genome. Furthermore, functional annotation analysis was performed using various integrated bioinformatic tools to determine the biological significance of the predicted secretome. In total, 7,458 proteins were identified as secreted ones. A large percentage of this secretome is comprised of small proteins of ≤ 300 aa sequence length. Functional analyses showed that M. javanica secretome comprises cell wall degrading enzymes for facilitating nematode invasion, and migration by disintegrating the complex plant cell wall components. In addition, peptidases and peptidase inhibitors are an important category of M. javanica secretome involved in compatible host-nematode interactions. CONCLUSION: This study identifies the putative secretome encoded in the M. javanica genome. Future experimental validation analyses can greatly benefit from this global analysis of M. javanica secretome. Equally, our analyses will advance knowledge of the interaction between plants and nematodes.

RESUMO

Cyanobacteria are phototrophic organisms widely found in most types of natural habitats in the tropical regions of the world. In this study, we isolated and identified cyanobacterial strains from paddy soil in Hanoi (Vietnam) and investigated their cytotoxic activities. Five isolated cyanobacterial strains showed distinctive profiles of gene sequences (rRNA 16S and rbcL), phylogenetic placements, and morphological characteristics. Based on the polyphasic evaluation, they were classified as Scytonema bilaspurense NK13, Hapalosiphon welwitschii MD2411, Aulosira sp. XN1103, Desikacharya sp. NS2000, and Desmonostoc sp. NK1813. The cytotoxic screening revealed that the extract of strain Scytonema bilaspurense NK13 exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against four human cell lines of HeLa cells, OVCAR-8 cells, HaCaT cells, and HEK-293T cells, with IC50 values of 3.8, 34.2, 21.6, and 0.6 µg/mL, respectively. This is the first time a well-classified Scytonema strain from tropical habitat in Southeast Asia has been recognized as a potential producer of cytotoxic compounds.

RESUMO

B-site doping is an emerging strategy for tuning the emission wavelength of cesium lead halide ABX3 nanocrystals. We present a simple method for the postsynthetic doping of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with aluminum at room temperature by exposing them to a solution of AlBr3 in dibromomethane. Despite the much smaller ionic radius of Al3+ compared to that of Pb2+, nominal doping levels in a range from 8.1% to 24.3% were obtained when increasing the Al/Pb feed ratio from 1 to 4.5. Al3+ introduction leads to a hypsochromic shift of the photoluminescence (PL) emission of the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The PL peak position is highly stable over at least 6 months and tunable in a range of 510 to 480 nm by increasing the doping level. Structural analyses revealed a linear correlation between the PL energy and the lattice parameter with a slope of -1.96 eV/Å.

RESUMO

Despite improvements in medical care, the burden of sepsis remains high. In this study, we evaluated the incremental cost associated with postoperative sepsis and the impact of postoperative sepsis on clinical outcomes among surgical patients in Vietnam. We used the national database that contained 1,241,893 surgical patients undergoing seven types of surgery. We controlled the balance between the groups of patients using propensity score matching method. Generalized gamma regression and logistic regression were utilized to estimate incremental cost, readmission, and reexamination associated with postoperative sepsis. The average incremental cost associated with postoperative sepsis was 724.1 USD (95% CI 553.7-891.7) for the 30 days after surgery, which is equivalent to 28.2% of the per capita GDP in Vietnam in 2018. The highest incremental cost was found in patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, at 2,897 USD (95% CI 530.7-5263.2). Postoperative sepsis increased patient odds of readmission (OR = 6.40; 95% CI 6.06-6.76), reexamination (OR = 1.67; 95% CI 1.58-1.76), and also associated with 4.9 days longer of hospital length of stay among surgical patients. Creating appropriate prevention strategies for postoperative sepsis is extremely important, not only to improve the quality of health care but also to save health financial resources each year.

RESUMO

The study aimed to evaluate the contribution of the FTO A/T polymorphism (rs9939609) to the prediction of the future type 2 diabetes (T2D). A population-based prospective study included 1443 nondiabetic subjects at baseline, and they were examined for developing T2D after 5-year follow-up. Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the hazard ratio (HR) of rs9939609 to the future T2D in the models adjusted for the confounding factors including socio-economic status, lifestyle factors (smoking and drinking history, sporting habits, and leisure time), and clinical patterns (obese status, blood pressures, and dyslipidemia) at baseline. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to measure the power to predict individuals with T2D. The FTO-rs9939609 polymorphism was a significant predictor of future T2D in the model unadjusted, and it remained significant in the final model after adjustment for the confounding factors, showing an additive effect of the A-allele (HR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.02-1.78, P = 0.036, AUC = 0.676). For normoglycemic subjects at baseline, the similar final adjusted model reported the increased HR per A-allele (HR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.09-2.07, P = 0.012, AUC = 0.697). Five-year changes in BMI, waist circumference, and systolic blood pressure did not remove the contribution of rs9939609 to increased HR of T2D. The population attributable risk for risk genotype was 13.6%. In conclusion, the study indicates that the FTO-rs9939609 polymorphism is an important genetic predictor for future T2D in Vietnamese population.

RESUMO

In-depth and reliable characterization of advanced nanoparticles is crucial for revealing the origin of their unique features and for designing novel functional materials with tailored properties. Due to their small size, characterization beyond nanometric resolution, notably, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and associated techniques, is essential to provide meaningful information. Nevertheless, nanoparticles, especially those containing volatile elements or organic components, are sensitive to radiation damage. Here, using CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals as an example, strategies to preserve the native structure of radiation-sensitive nanocrystals in high-resolution electron microscopy studies are presented. Atomic-resolution images obtained using graphene support films allow for a clear comparison with simulation results, showing that most CsPbBr3 nanocrystals are orthorhombic. Low-dose TEM reveals faceted nanocrystals with no in situ formed Pb crystallites, a feature observed in previous TEM studies that has been attributed to radiation damage. Cryo-electron microscopy further delays observable effects of radiation damage. Powder electron diffraction with a hybrid pixel direct electron detector confirms the domination of orthorhombic crystals. These results emphasize the importance of optimizing TEM grid preparation and of exploiting data collection strategies that impart minimum electron dose for revealing the true structure of radiation-sensitive nanocrystals.

RESUMO

Myocardial infarction is a considerable burden on public health. However, there is a lack of information about its economic impact on both the individual and national levels. This study aims to estimate the incremental cost, readmission risk, and length of hospital stay due to myocardial infarction as a post-operative complication. We used data from a standardized national system managed by the Vietnam Social Insurance database. The original sample size was 1,241,893 surgical patients who had undergone one of seven types of surgery. A propensity score matching method was applied to create a matched sample for cost analysis. A generalized linear model was used to estimate direct treatment costs, the length of stay, and the effect of the complication on the readmission of surgical patients. Myocardial infarction occurs most frequently after vascular surgery. Patients with a myocardial infarction complication were more likely to experience readmission within 30 and 90 days, with an OR of 3.45 (95%CI: 2.92-4.08) and 4.39 (95%CI: 3.78-5.10), respectively. The increments of total costs at 30 and 90 days due to post-operative myocardial infarction were 4,490.9 USD (95%CI: 3882.3-5099.5) and 4,724.6 USD (95%CI: 4111.5-5337.8) per case, while the increases in length of stay were 4.9 (95%CI: 3.6-6.2) and 5.7 (95%CI: 4.2-7.2) per case, respectively. Perioperative myocardial infarction contributes significantly to medical costs for the individual and the national economy. Patients with perioperative myocardial infarction are more likely to be readmitted and face a longer treatment duration.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: "Push" or "pull" techniques with the use of snares, forceps, baskets, and grasping devices are conventionally used to manage esophageal food bolus impaction (FBI). A novel cap-assisted technique has recently been advocated to reduce time taken for food bolus (FB) removal. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the cap-assisted technique against conventional methods of esophageal FB removal in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Consecutive patients with esophageal FBI requiring endoscopic removal, from 3 Australian tertiary hospitals between 2017 and 2019, were randomized to either the cap-assisted technique or the conventional technique. Primary outcomes were technical success and FB retrieval time. Secondary outcomes were technical success rate, en bloc removal rate, procedure-related complication, length of hospital stay, and cost of consumables. RESULTS: Over 24 months, 342 patients with esophageal FBI were randomized to a cap-assisted (n = 171) or conventional (n = 171) technique. Compared with the conventional approach, the cap-assisted technique was associated with (i) shorter FB retrieval time (4.5 ± 0.5 minutes vs 21.7 ± 0.9 minutes, P < 0.001), (ii) shorter total procedure time (23.0 ± 0.6 minutes vs 47.0 ± 1.3 minutes, P < 0.0001), (iii) higher technical success rate (170/171 vs 160/171, P < 0.001), (iv) higher rate of en bloc removal (159/171 vs 48/171, P < 0.001), and (v) lower rate of procedure-related mucosal tear and bleeding (0/171 vs 13/171, P < 0.001). There were no major adverse events or deaths within 30 days in either group. The total cost of consumables was higher in the conventional group (A$19,644.90 vs A$6,239.90). DISCUSSION: This multicenter randomized controlled trial confirmed that the cap-assisted technique is more effective and less costly than the conventional approach and should be first-line treatment for esophageal FBI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Estimating the cost of postoperative respiratory complications is crucial in developing appropriate strategies to mitigate the global and national economic burden. However, systematic analysis of the economic burden in low- and middle-income countries is lacking. METHODS: We used the nationwide database of the Vietnam Social Insurance agency and extracted data from January 2017 to September 2018. The data contain 1 241 893 surgical patients undergoing one of seven types of surgery. Propensity score matching method was used to match cases with and without complications. We used generalized gamma regressions to estimate the direct medical costs; logistic regressions to evaluate the impact of postoperative respiratory complications on re-hospitalization and outpatient visits. FINDINGS: Postoperative respiratory complications increased the odds of re-hospitalization and outpatient visits by 3·49 times (95% CI: 3·35-3·64) and 1·39 times (95% CI: 1·34-1·45) among surgical patients, respectively. The mean incremental cost associated with postoperative respiratory complications occurring within 30 days of the index admission was 1053·3 USD (95% CI: 940·7-1165·8) per procedure, which was equivalent to 41% of the GDP per capita of Vietnam in 2018. We estimated the national annual incremental cost due to respiratory complications occurring within 30 days after surgery was 13·87 million USD. Pneumonia contributed the greatest part of the annual cost burden of postoperative respiratory complications. INTERPRETATION: The economic burden of postoperative respiratory complications is substantial at both individual and national levels. Postoperative respiratory complications also increase the odds of re-hospitalization and outpatient visits and increase the length of hospital stay among surgical patients. FUNDING: The authors did not receive any funds for conducting this study.

RESUMO

Antioxidant and UV absorption activities of three aaptamine derivatives including piperidine[3,2-b]demethyl(oxy)aaptamine (C1), 9-amino-2-ethoxy-8-methoxy-3H-benzo[de][1,6]naphthyridine-3-one (C2), and 2-(sec-butyl)-7,8-dimethoxybenzo[de]imidazo[4,5,1-ij][1,6]-naphthyridin-10(9H)-one (C3) were theoretically studied by density functional theory (DFT). Direct antioxidant activities of C1-C3 were firstly evaluated via their intrinsic thermochemical properties and the radical scavenging activity of the potential antioxidants with the HOO˙/HO˙ radicals via four mechanisms, including: hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer (SET), proton loss (PL) and radical adduct formation (RAF). Kinetic calculation reveals that HOO˙ scavenging in water occurs via HAT mechanism with C1 (k app, 7.13 × 106 M-1 s-1) while RAF is more dominant with C2 (k app, 1.40 × 105 M-1 s-1) and C3 (k app, 2.90 × 105 M-1 s-1). Antioxidant activity of aaptamine derivatives can be classified as C1 > C3 > C2. Indirect antioxidant properties based on Cu(i) and Cu(ii) ions chelating activity were also investigated in aqueous phase. All three studied compounds show spontaneous and favorable Cu(i) ion chelating activity with ΔG 0 being -15.4, -13.7, and -15.7 kcal mol-1, whereas ΔG 0 for Cu(ii) chelation are -10.4, -10.8, and -2.2 kcal mol-1 for C1, C2 and C3, respectively. In addition, all compounds show UVA and UVB absorption; in which the excitations are determined mostly as π-π* transition. Overall, the results suggest the potential applications of the aaptamines in pharmaceutics and cosmetics, i.e. as a sunscreen and antioxidant ingredient.

RESUMO

Syringic acid (SA) is a natural phenolic acid found in vegetables, fruits, and other plant-based foods. A range of biological activities were proposed for this compound including anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammation, and anti-diabetic activities, as well as antioxidant and antinitrosant properties. In this study, the focus is on the latter two. The HO•, HOO•, NO, and NO2 scavenging activities of SA were evaluated in physiological environments by kinetic and thermodynamic calculations. The computed rate constants of the HO• radical scavenging of SA were 4.63 × 109 and 9.77 × 107 M-1 s-1 in polar and nonpolar solvents, respectively. A comparison with the experimentally determined rate constant in aqueous solution yields a kcalculated/kexperimental ratio of 0.3, thus the computed kinetic data are reasonably accurate. SA exhibited excellent HOO• and NO2 scavenging activity in water (koverall(HOO•) = 1.53 × 108 M-1 s-1 and koverall(NO2) = 1.98 × 108 M-1 s-1), whereas it did not show NO scavenging activity in any of the studied environments. In lipid medium, SA exhibited weak activity. Thus, in polar environments, the HOO• radical scavenging of SA is 1.53 times higher than that of ascorbic acid. Consistently, SA is a promising antioxidant and antinitrosant agent in polar environments.

RESUMO

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is characterised by diffuse metastases, with common sites being the brain, liver, bones, and adrenal glands. Small bowel metastasis from NSCLC is a rare phenomenon, particularly in patients with an adenocarcinoma histology. We report the case of a 56-year-old lung adenocarcinoma patient with a duodenal metastasis diagnosed on FDG/PET-CT and confirmed on duodenal biopsy. Although initially asymptomatic, he subsequently presented with obstructive jaundice secondary to rapid local disease progression at the duodenal metastasis, requiring endoscopic intervention for biliary drainage. He was commenced on single agent pembrolizumab, with disease response on subsequent follow-up. This case highlights a rare case of gastrointestinal metastasis from NSCLC requiring endoscopic intervention due to rapid progression of the disease at the site of metastasis.

RESUMO

GC-MS was applied to identify 24 main substances in Melaleuca cajuputi essential oil (TA) extracted from fresh cajeput leaves through steam distilling. The inhibitory capability of active compounds in the TA from Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam over the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) protein in human body - the host receptor for SARS-CoV-2 and the main protease (PDB6LU7) of the SARS-CoV-2 using docking simulation has been studied herein. The results indicate that the ACE2 and PDB6LU7 proteins were strongly inhibited by 10 out of 24 compounds accounting for 70.9% in the TA. The most powerful anticoronavirus activity is expressed in the order: Terpineol (TA2) ≈ Guaiol (TA5) ≈ Linalool (TA19) > Cineol (TA1) > ß-Selinenol (TA3) > α-Eudesmol (TA4) > γ-Eudesmol (TA7). Interestingly, the synergistic interactions of these 10 substances of the TA exhibit excellent inhibition into the ACE2 and PDB6LU7 proteins. The docking results orient that the natural Melaleuca cajuputi essential oil is considered as a valuable resource for preventing SARS-CoV-2 invasion into human body.

RESUMO

Eighteen active substances, including 17 organosulfur compounds found in garlic essential oil (T), were identified by GC-MS analysis. For the first time, using the molecular docking technique, we report the inhibitory effect of the considered compounds on the host receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) protein in the human body that leads to a crucial foundation about coronavirus resistance of individual compounds on the main protease (PDB6LU7) protein of SARS-CoV-2. The results show that the 17 organosulfur compounds, accounting for 99.4% contents of the garlic essential oil, have strong interactions with the amino acids of the ACE2 protein and the main protease PDB6LU7 of SARS-CoV-2. The strongest anticoronavirus activity is expressed in allyl disulfide and allyl trisulfide, which account for the highest content in the garlic essential oil (51.3%). Interestingly, docking results indicate the synergistic interactions of the 17 substances, which exhibit good inhibition of the ACE2 and PDB6LU7 proteins. The results suggest that the garlic essential oil is a valuable natural antivirus source, which contributes to preventing the invasion of coronavirus into the human body.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) associated with surgery can cause serious comorbidities or death and imposes a substantial economic burden to society. The study examined VTE cases after surgery to determined how this condition imposed an economic burden on patients based on the national health insurance reimbursement database. Methods: This retrospective analysis adopted the public payer's perspective. The direct medical cost was estimated using data from the national claims database of Vietnam from Jan 1, 2017 to Sep 31, 2018. Adult patients who underwent surgeries were recruited for the study. Patients with a diagnostic code of up to 90 days after surgery were considered VTE cases with the outcome measure being the surgery-related costs within 90 days. RESULTS: The 90-day cost of VTE patients was found to be US$2,939. The rate of readmission increased by 5.4 times, the rate of outpatient visits increased by 1.8 times and total costs over 90 days in patients with VTE undergoing surgery increased by 2.2 times. Estimation using propensity score matching method showed that an increase of US$1,019 in the 90-day cost of VTE patients. CONCLUSION: The VTE-related costs can be used to assess the potential economic benefit and cost-savings from prevention efforts.

RESUMO

AIM: To estimate the direct medical cost of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications in Vietnam. METHODS: Using the public payer perspective, the direct medical cost was estimated using routine data in the national claims database in Vietnam in 2017. People were identified as being diagnosed with T2DM if they were aged ≥ 30 years and who either (1) had at least one ICD-10 code E11 or (2) had been prescribed with oral antihyperglycemic medication on two separate visit records. The Diabetes Severity Complications Index was used to assess the presence of diabetes-related complications. All costs were standardized to 2017 United States dollars (USD). RESULTS: Of the 1,395,204 people identified with T2DM, 55% had diabetes-related complications. The most common complication was cardiovascular diseases (34%). The total direct medical cost was USD 435 million, of which 24% was spent on hospitalization, 20% on outpatient care, 7% on emergency care, 36% on non-diabetes-related medication, and 13% on antihyperglycemic medication. About 70% of the total direct medical costs were attributed to diabetes-related complications. CONCLUSION: The high proportion of hospitalization and complications costs in Vietnam suggests that the possibility exists to make economic savings through better preventative care.

RESUMO

Herein, a novel fluorescent sensor has been developed for the detection of biothiols based on theoretical calculations of the stability constant of the complex between a Cu2+ ion and (E)-3-((2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)-7-(diethylamino) coumarin (BDC) as a fluorescent ligand. In this study, on the basis of density functional theory method, the Gibbs free energy of ligand-exchange reaction and the solvation model were carried out using thermodynamic cycles. The obtained results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The BDC-Cu2+ complex can be used as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols in the presence of non-thiol containing amino acids, with a detection limit for cysteine at 0.3 µM. Moreover, theoretical calculations of excited states were used to elucidate variations in the fluorescence properties. The computed results show that the excited doublet states D2 and D1 are dark doublet states, which quench the fluorescence of the complex.
