RESUMO

Dermoids cysts, gliomas and encephaloceles are uncommon congenital lesions that result from an aberrant embryologic development. Six cases of these nasal lesions have been treated. These may present an intracranial extension as a consequence of an unusual closure of the anterior neural tube and it requires an early diagnosis to avoid local and intracranial infectious complications. Therefore, an early surgical correction is thus imperative. Neuroimaging studies may help to predict intracranial involvement.

RESUMO

Solitary plasmocytoma is a rare plasmactic cell tumor occurring in the head and neck. These constitute, less than 1% of all head and neck malignancies. On initial presentation they must be differentiated from multiple myeloma. This may prove to be difficult because a varying percentage may be associated at a later date with the development of multiple myeloma. We describe three cases of plasmocytomas, one occurred in the larynx, in the cavity nasal and other in the skull base. The clinical characteristics, diagnosis criteria and therapeutic problems (radiation, surgery or a combination of booth) are discussed and reviewed in the literature.

RESUMO

A case occurring in a 62 year-old male with a xantomatous infiltrate taking the pharyngolarynx is reported. Basic features of xantomatosis are described as other manifestations encountered in the ENT-area.

RESUMO

Osseous hemangioma is a rare tumour of head and neck localisation. In this work the AA. present a case of the tumour located in the upper maxilla, considering the actual concept and the possibilities of differential diagnosis in relation with both radiologic and anatomopathological characteristics.

RESUMO

The most common manifestation of mycobacterial infection encountered in E.N.T. practice is cervical lymphadenitis. Mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis, the so-called scrofula, remains a diagnostic challenge, because it mimics other resembling processes. We present 13 cases of cervical granulomatous lymphadenitis treated from 1967 until 1990.

RESUMO

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare entity of uncertain cause which commonly presents as a lymphoadenopathy unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. Although usually it follows a benign self-limited course KFD has been repeatedly misdiagnosed as lymphoma. With this new case data about the etiology and clinical trend of KFD are added. Review of the literature.

RESUMO

The present clinical and pathological study describes the cases of two patients having infiltrate and ulcerous lesions of the nose, hard palate and rhinopharynx clinically consistent with a malignant midline granuloma. Histologically, infiltrates presented atypical lymphoid cells around small vessels and damage of the vascular wall. Immunohistologic study, using monoclonal antibodies on both fresh and paraffin embedded tissues, led to the positive diagnosis of peripheral lymphoma of T cells.

RESUMO

Tumors of the ceruminous glands can affect the auricula and periauricular skin and should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions of these regions. Correct management of these tumors depends on precise histopathologic classification and diagnosis of their extension. We report a case of cystic adenoid carcinoma of the external auditory canal. Signs and symptoms, histopathology, and treatment of these lesions as reported in the literature are reviewed.

RESUMO

We present a cervical thymic cyst clinically manifest as a lateral neck mass and studied preoperatively with ultrasound. We point to the sonographic findings that allow us to include the cervical thymic cyst as one of the diagnostic possibilities.

RESUMO

A case report of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the larynx es presented and the literature reviewed. The inherent difficulties in histologic mucoepidermoid carcinoma is discussed. At the present time, mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the larynx should be regarded as a separate entity, its treatment based in histological grade as well as clinical behavior.

RESUMO

This study report 3 cases of nodal cystic metastasis in the neck. One of them was diagnosed as an epidermoid carcinoma of unknown origin and the other 2 were an epidermoid carcinoma and an mucoepidermoid carcinoma respectively, arising in the larynx. Treatment of these patients included removal of the cystic metastasis with or without neck dissection and irradiation. Cystic metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma have often been mistaken for primary squamous cell carcinoma of branchiogenic origin. The distinctive histological features of cystic metastasis reviewed after its correct identification, can lead to the discovery of an unsuspected primary lesion and result in specific treatment options.
