RESUMO

Cowden syndrome is characterized by several clinical features related to tumorous lesions primarily consisting of systemic hamartomas. The mutation of a tumor suppressor gene, the PTEN gene, is etiologically involved. As gastrointestinal lesions, polyps of all digestive tracts involving the esophagus to rectum develop. In patients with Cowden syndrome, the risk of colorectal cancer may increase. However, the characteristics of colorectal cancer in these patients remain to be clarified and sufficient findings regarding chemotherapy have not been obtained. A 39-year-old man was treated with a colonic stent for colitis obstructive due to circumferential transverse colon carcinoma. After decompression, elective extended laparoscopic right hemicolectomy was performed. Preoperative systemic detailed examination revealed characteristic dermal/mucosal findings, polyposis of the upper digestive tract, and a thyroid tumor. On PTEN gene sequencing, a mutation was detected at codon 130 of exon 5, leading to a diagnosis of Cowden syndrome. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy was performed for 6 months, but recurrent peritoneal dissemination was observed 1 month after its completion. FOLFOXIRI + bevacizumab therapy was started. Transiently, a partial response was achieved in peritoneally disseminated nodes according to the RECIST. There was no increase in the volume of cancerous ascites. However, an increase in the volume of ascites and local relapse were noted at the completion of the tenth course. The regimen was switched to FOLFIRI + panitumumab, but peritoneal dissemination exacerbated and the patient died 18 months after surgery.

RESUMO

A 75-year-old woman underwent sigmoid colon resection and transverse colostomy for perforation of the diverticulum of the sigmoid colon at 70 years of age at another hospital. She was referred to our hospital with complaints of abdominal discomfort 3 months prior to presentation. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a parastomal hernia (PSH). We performed laparoscopic repair using the Sugarbaker approach with a Symbotex Composite Mesh™ and laparoscopic adhesive intestinal repair. The patient's post-operative course was unremarkable, and she was transferred to the Department of Internal Medicine after 10 days. There was no recurrence 6 months after surgery. Tension-free surgery using a mesh has been reported to be effective in preventing the recurrence of PSH. We performed a laparoscopic modified Sugarbaker mesh method using the Symbotex Composite Mesh™ with collagen film to repair an abdominal hernia.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Post-operative paralytic ileus (POI) occurs after surgery because of gastrointestinal dysfunction caused by surgical invasion. We therefore investigated the frequency of POI after laparoscopic colorectal surgery in patients with colorectal cancer using a strictly defined POI diagnosis and identified associated risk factors. METHODS: Patients who underwent initial laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer between January 2014 and December 2018 were included. The primary end point was the incidence of POI. A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed the contributing risk factors for POI. RESULTS: Of the 436 patients, 94 (21.6%) had POI. Compared with the non-POI group, the POI group had significantly higher frequencies of infectious complications (p < 0.001), pneumonia (p < 0.001), intra-abdominal abscess (p = 0.012), anastomotic leakage (p = 0.016), and post-operative bleeding (p = 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, the right colon (odds ratio [OR] 2.180, p = 0.005), pre-operative chemotherapy (OR 2.530, p = 0.047), pre-operative antithrombotic drug (OR 2.210, p = 0.032), and post-operative complications of CD grade ≥ 3 (OR 12.90, p < 0.001) were independent risk factors for POI. CONCLUSION: Post-operative management considering the risk of post-operative bowel palsy may be necessary for patients with right colon, pre-operative chemotherapy, pre-operative antithrombotic drug or severe post-operative complications.

RESUMO

Obtaining a histological fingerprint from the in-vivo brain has been a long-standing target of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In particular, non-invasive imaging of iron and myelin, which are involved in normal brain functions and are histopathological hallmarks in neurodegenerative diseases, has practical utilities in neuroscience and medicine. Here, we propose a biophysical model that describes the individual contribution of paramagnetic (e.g., iron) and diamagnetic (e.g., myelin) susceptibility sources to the frequency shift and transverse relaxation of MRI signals. Using this model, we develop a method, χ-separation, that generates the voxel-wise distributions of the two sources. The method is validated using computer simulation and phantom experiments, and applied to ex-vivo and in-vivo brains. The results delineate the well-known histological features of iron and myelin in the specimen, healthy volunteers, and multiple sclerosis patients. This new technology may serve as a practical tool for exploring the microstructural information of the brain.

RESUMO

Serum creatinine (SCr) levels depend on muscle mass and are therefore elevated in people with high muscle mass, potentially leading to underestimation of kidney function in this population. Although recent therapeutic guidelines have shown measurement of serum cystatin C (ScysC) to be useful, this method has not been validated in people with high muscle mass. We conducted this study to investigate methods for more accurately estimating kidney function in people with high muscle mass. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the correlation of endogenous creatinine clearance (24-hour CLcr) and 24-hour CLcr × 0.715 (i.e., modified glomerular filtration rate (GFR)); with estimated kidney function from SCr and ScysC in 15 healthy young adult men with high muscle mass. A significant but weak positive correlation was observed between 24-hour CLcr and estimated CLcr by the Cockcroft and Gault formula (CG CLcr; R2 = 0.371, p = 0.016). The estimated GFR calculated from ScysC (eGFRcys) was significantly higher than CLcr × 0.715, but the two were not correlated (R2 = 0.125, p = 0.197). However, when CG CLcr and eGFRcr were adjusted by muscle mass parameters, the correlation between measured and estimated values improved. Further improvement was seen when participants with a fat mass greater than 25% were excluded (R2 = 0.623, p = 0.004; R2 = 0.510, p = 0.014; n = 11 for both). The results of our study suggest that currently used formulas for estimating kidney function, including eGFRcys, may not be appropriate for people with high muscle mass, but use of muscle mass parameters may improve predictivity.

RESUMO

The success of deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the internal globus pallidus (GPi) depends on the accuracy of electrode localization inside the GPi. In this study, we sought to compare visualization of the medial medullary lamina (MML) and accessory medullary lamina (AML) between proton density-weighted (PDW) and T2-weighted (T2W) sequences on 3T and 7T MRI scanners. Eleven healthy participants (five men and six women; age, 19-28 years; mean, 21.5) and one 61-year-old man were scanned using two-dimensional turbo spin-echo PDW and T2W sequences on 3T and 7T MRI scanners with a 32-channel receiver head coil and a single-channel transmission coil. Profiles of signal intensity were obtained from the pixel values of straight lines over the GP regions crossing the MML and AML. Contrast ratios (CRs) for GPe/MML, GPie/MML, GPie/AML, and GPii/AML were calculated. Qualitatively, 7T visualized both the MML and AML, whereas 3T visualized the MML less clearly and hardly depicted the AML. The T2W sequence at 7T yielded significantly higher CRs for GPie/MML, GPie/AML, and GPii/AML than the PDW sequence at 7T or 3T. The T2W sequence at 7T allows visualization of the internal structures of GPi segments with high signal intensity and contrast.

RESUMO

Creatinine (Cr) levels are strongly affected by muscle mass, and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), a measure based on serum creatinine (SCr), is often overestimated in patients with sarcopenia. To evaluate the coefficient of determination (R2) between eGFR and the actual measured value, we performed a linear regression analysis of a modified GFR (mGFR: measured Cr clearance × 0.715) and various renal function estimates adjusted for muscle mass in 19 patients with sarcopenia. The eGFR values based on SCr (eGFRcr) were higher than those based on mGFR, although a high R2 (0.704; p < 0.001) was found between these values. There was no deviation between eGFR based on serum cystatin C (eGFRcys) and mGFR, although the R2 value 0.691 was equivalent to that of eGFRcr. In the equation used to calculate eGFRcr not adjusted for body surface area (mL/min), muscle mass parameters obtained from bioelectrical impedance analysis were used instead of actual body weight to recalculate the eGFRcr. The R2 between this eGFRcr and mGFR did not improve, although there was less deviation. However, assuming that all patients were female by using female coefficients for all patients, the R2 between eGFRcr-fcc (eGFRcr with female coefficient correction) and mGFR improved and was the highest (0.808) on substitution of appendicular skeletal muscle mass. The correlation between eGFRcr-fcc and mGFR improved over eGFRcys when muscle mass was substituted for body weight in the equation used to estimate eGFR in patients with sarcopenia and sex differences were removed.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The question as to whether laparoscopic surgery should be applied for inguinal hernia after radical prostatectomy remains a debate due to surgical difficulty arising from adhesions in the prevesical space. We report the surgical technique used in our department, its outcomes, and its safety and effectiveness compared with the surgical outcomes of primary transabdominal preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair (TAPP) cases. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From February 2013 to January 2017, 30 patients with inguinal hernia were treated with TAPP after radical prostatectomy. At our institution, to avoid bladder injury, we dissect the prevesical space with the layer between the transversalis fascia and superficial layers of the preperitoneal fascia as the dissection plane. The practitioners were three qualified surgeons. Surgical outcome were compared with those of primary TAPP cases. For statistical analyses, we used t test to compare the mean operative durations and Chi square test to compare all other surgical outcomes. RESULTS: The median observation period was 19 months. Intraoperative and postoperative complications did not occur; no onset of recurrence and chronic pain was observed. The mean operative duration was 116.2 min, which was significantly longer than that of primary TAPP patients (87.9 min). However, the operative duration for the last 14 patients had reduced to 101.6 min, which was not significantly different from that of primary TAPP patients. CONCLUSION: In TAPP for patients following prostatectomy, surgery can be performed safely and reliably without prolonging the operative duration by selecting a skilled practitioner and standardizing the technique.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are few reports of metastases from colon cancer to an inguinal hernia sac, and few reports of colon cancer originating in diverticula. We report a patient with carcinoma of the sigmoid colon arising in two diverticula, who presented with peritoneal seeding to an inguinal hernia sac, and a review of the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old male underwent open herniorrhaphy for a left inguinal hernia. At operation, a nodule in the inguinal hernia sac was resected and histologic examination revealed adenocarcinoma, which was suspected to be a metastasis from a distant primary lesion. Postoperative evaluation included colonoscopy and positron emission tomography which showed two suspected lesions in sigmoid diverticula. Laparoscopic subtotal colectomy was performed, and pathology revealed adenocarcinoma in two sigmoid diverticula. CONCLUSIONS: If a nodule is found in an inguinal hernia sac, especially in older patients, peritoneal metastases should be considered. Resection of the nodule with histopathologic evaluation is essential. Colon cancer arising in a diverticulum should be considered as a possible site of the primary lesion.

RESUMO

Background: An imbalance in the inflammatory tumor necrosis factor system, including soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (sTNFR2), may contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Methods: We measured the plasma levels of sTNFR2 in 256 healthy controls and 250 patients with schizophrenia including antipsychotic drug-free patients and treatment-resistant patients. We also explored the possible association between plasma sTNFR2 levels and cognitive performance in healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Third Edition, the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised, and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. An association between plasma sTNFR2 levels and hippocampal volume in controls and patients with schizophrenia was also investigated via MRI. Results: We found that the plasma levels of sTNFR2 were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia, including both antipsychotic drug-free patients and treatment-resistant patients. We found a significant negative association between plasma sTNFR2 levels and cognitive performance in controls and patients with schizophrenia. Hippocampal volume was also negatively associated with plasma sTNFR2 levels in patients with schizophrenia. Conclusion: Together, these convergent data suggest a possible biological mechanism for schizophrenia, whereby increased sTNFR2 levels are associated with a smaller hippocampal volume and cognitive impairment.

RESUMO

Case: We report a rare case of omental herniation through the esophageal hiatus. A 46-year-old man visited our emergency department complaining of epigastralgia. Abdominal examination revealed muscular defense and rebound tenderness in his upper abdomen. A computed tomography scan showed a fat density mass in the posterior mediastinum. A laparoscopic operation was carried out under the diagnosis of omental herniation through the esophageal hiatus. Outcome: Abdominal pain disappeared dramatically after the operation. The postoperative course was uneventful. Conclusion: Although a fat density mass in the posterior mediastinum is likely to be diagnosed as a lipomatous tumor, omental herniation through the esophageal hiatus should be taken into consideration as a possible diagnosis for acute abdominal pain in the emergency department.

RESUMO

A 31-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis was treated with prednisone and immunosuppressants. After her lupus nephritis symptoms worsened, both high-dose steroid and cyclophosphamide pulse therapy were administered. The patient developed an intestinal perforation, and laparoscopic Hartmann's surgery was performed on the sigmoid colon. Serum Cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigen C7HRP was detected, and the patient was diagnosed with CMV colitis and underwent a colon resection. Severe hematochezia continued despite ganciclovir administration, and the patient underwent laparoscopic total colectomy and partial ileostomy. CMV enteritis should be considered in patients treated with prednisone and immunosuppressants and those who have abdominal pain and hematochezia. Immunocompromised patients with intestinal perforation due to CMV enteritis have a poor prognosis. We report a case with along with the results of a literature review.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to reveal the short-term and long-term outcomes of single-incision laparoscopic colorectal resection (SILC) compared with multi-incision laparoscopic colorectal resection (MILC) for colorectal cancer using propensity score matching analysis. METHODS: The study group included 235 patients who underwent SILC and 730 patients who underwent MILC for colorectal cancer between April 2009 and September 2014. The propensity score matching for age, gender, body mass index, tumor location (right-sided colon/sigmoid colon/upper rectum), lymph node dissection (D1/D2/D3), pathologic T (≤T3) stage and TNM (0-I/II/III) stage produced 107 matched pairs. The exclusion criteria for SILC were as follows: (1) tumors located at the transverse, descending colon or lower rectum, (2) stage IV tumors, synchronous or previous malignancies, (3) locally advanced tumors >T4, (4) acute obstructions or previous major abdominal surgery and (5) obese patients: BMI > 30. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in operating time, bleeding volumes, starting time of liquid diet and length of hospital stay between the SILC and MILC groups. However, the SILC group showed less analgesic requirements (1.1 vs. 1.9 times; p = 0.0006) and shorter length of incision (2.7 vs. 4.3 cm; p = 0.0000) compared to MILC group. The overall rate of postoperative complications was similar in both groups (2.8 vs. 3.7%, p = 0.70). The 5-year overall survival rate of SILC and MILC was 100 and 95% (p = 0.125) and 5-year disease-free survival rates in stages 0-III were 97 and 94% (p = 0.189), 100 and 92% in stage II and 90 and 85% in stage III, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that SILC for colorectal cancer is a safe and feasible option with better cosmetic results and less pain in strictly selected patients. SILC can also produce good oncological results with similar postoperative outcomes to MILC.

RESUMO

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex group of clinically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders with unclear etiology and pathogenesis. Genetic studies have identified numerous candidate genetic variants, including de novo mutated ASD-associated genes; however, the function of these de novo mutated genes remains unclear despite extensive bioinformatics resources. Accordingly, it is not easy to assign priorities to numerous candidate ASD-associated genes for further biological analysis. Here we developed a convenient system for identifying an experimental evidence-based annotation of candidate ASD-associated genes. We performed trio-based whole-exome sequencing in 30 sporadic cases of ASD and identified 37 genes with de novo single-nucleotide variations (SNVs). Among them, 5 of those 37 genes, POGZ, PLEKHA4, PCNX, PRKD2 and HERC1, have been previously reported as genes with de novo SNVs in ASD; and consultation with in silico databases showed that only HERC1 might be involved in neural function. To examine whether the identified gene products are involved in neural functions, we performed small hairpin RNA-based assays using neuroblastoma cell lines to assess neurite development. Knockdown of 8 out of the 14 examined genes significantly decreased neurite development (P<0.05, one-way analysis of variance), which was significantly higher than the number expected from gene ontology databases (P=0.010, Fisher's exact test). Our screening system may be valuable for identifying the neural functions of candidate ASD-associated genes for further analysis and a substantial portion of these genes with de novo SNVs might have roles in neuronal systems, although further detailed analysis might eliminate false positive genes from identified candidate ASD genes.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: It is often technically difficult to cut the lower rectum with an endoscopic linear stapler in single-incision laparoscopic colorectal resections (SILC) because some surgical devices are inserted through the same access platform. If the rectum is cut incorrectly, it may cause anastomotic leakage. We recently applied natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSE) using the prolapsing technique to overcome this technical difficulty in SILC procedures in selected patients. MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: The access platform is placed in the small umbilical incision area. SILC is performed using a surgical technique similar to the conventional laparoscopic medial-to-lateral approach. The proximal part of the tumor site is transected with laparoscopic staplers. Then, the tumor lesion and bowel are pulled out of the body through the anus by means of inversion. Next, the distal side of the bowel is cut with a stapler and the rectal stump is reinforced with sutures under direct vision. The distal side of the bowel is then pushed back into the body. NOSE with prolapsing technique is then complete. After that, the anvil is attached to the proximal part of the bowel at the umbilical incision site, and intracorporeal anastomosis is performed. DISCUSSION: NOSE with prolapsing technique was applied in 14 SILC procedures for colorectal cancer patients. All procedures were successful, and there were no anastomotic leakages in the series. This technique enabled us to perform pure SILC safely without affecting cosmesis, even in cases where we needed to cut the lower rectum.

RESUMO

PURPOSES: We investigated the feasibility of laparoscopic surgery for transverse colon cancer (TCC) by examining the results of this procedure, and comparing the short- and long-term outcomes with those for right-sided and sigmoid colon cancer (OSCC). METHODS: The subjects consisted of 117 patients with TCC. Their complications, forms of recurrence and disease-free and 5-year survival rates were compared to those of 564 patients with OSCC. RESULTS: There were no significant between-group differences in the patient background. The average length of the operation in the TCC group was 215 min and that in the OSCC group was 184 min (p < 0.05). There were also no significant between-group differences in the average blood loss, which was 83.9 and 70.5 g, respectively. No significant difference was observed between groups by stage in terms of the disease-free survival rates, which were 94.4 and 79.1 % for stage II and III in the TCC group, and 92.4 and 78.8 % for stage II and III in the OSCC group. The incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications was low, and the five-year survival rate was favorable. As favorable results of laparoscopic colectomy (LAC) for TCC were also obtained at other sites in a multicenter randomized controlled trial, LAC is expected to become a standard therapy for TCC.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive, it produces stress responses to an extent similar to that of conventional laparotomy. Both epidural anesthesia and remifentanil intravenously (i.v.), combined with general anesthesia, provide stable hemodynamics during laparoscopic surgery. However, it has not been elucidated whether epidural anesthesia and remifentanil are associated with suppression of autonomic and neuroendocrine stress responses. This study aimed to clarify whether thoracic epidural anesthesia (TEA) or remifentanil suppresses stress responses during laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: We assigned 60 patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy to three groups anesthetized with 40 % oxygen-air-sevoflurane plus either TEA (TEA group), continuous infusion of remifentanil 0.25 µg/kg/min [low-dose (LD) group], or 1.0 µg/kg/min [high-dose (HD) group] (n = 20 each group). Plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and catecholamines were measured immediately before anesthesia induction, and 30 and 90 min after the start of pneumoperitoneum. RESULTS: All groups showed no significant changes in hemodynamics during the course of anesthesia. Compared with TEA, both high-dose and low-dose remifentanil significantly suppressed increases in ACTH, ADH, and cortisol during pneumoperitoneum. Plasma adrenaline showed no significant changes during pneumoperitoneum in any group. Compared with TEA, low-dose remifentanil produced significantly higher plasma concentrations of noradrenaline and dopamine during pneumoperitoneum. CONCLUSION: Notwithstanding similar hemodynamic responses in all groups, only high-dose remifentanil suppressed both sympathetic responses and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. This result indicates that of these three anesthesia regimens, high-dose remifentanil seems most suited for laparoscopic surgery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion sometimes causes significant morbidity. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of our newly developed antiadhesive material, alginate flakes, to the most commonly used combination of hyaluronic acid and carboxymethyl cellulose film. METHODS: Sodium alginate was formed into a gel, powder, or flakes. In the ex vivo study, these different alginate forms were attached onto pig skin and their antisolubility properties in saline and attachment stability were compared. In the in vivo study, a rat surgical adhesion model was used to study the properties of the alginates, and the rats were euthanized on day 14 after surgery. The efficacy of the antiadhesive materials was evaluated using an adhesion scoring system, and the locations that were treated with the antiadhesives were histologically examined. RESULTS: In the alginate groups, the alginate flakes were superior with respect to the antisolubility and the attachment stability ex vivo as well as with respect to the antiadhesive efficacy in vivo. The adhesion score was almost the same as that observed in the alginate flake and cellulose film groups. CONCLUSIONS: We developed an alginate flake material and demonstrated its antiadhesive effects both ex vivo and in vivo. This is the first reported study using this flake-like material, which has a unique characteristic in that it can be applied by spraying in compressed air. Alginate flakes may therefore be especially useful in the field of laparoscopic surgery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic surgery is well established for recurrent, uncomplicated diverticular disease, but not for complicated diverticular disease. Using the Hinchey classification, we compared laparoscopic colon resection (LAPH) with conventional open colon resection (OPH) for the treatment of complicated diverticulitis equivalent to Hinchey stage I-II. METHODS: In this study, the Hinchey classification (I-IV) was also adopted for right-sided diverticulitis (I'-IV'). We reviewed the clinical records of 58 patients who underwent colon resection for complicated colon diverticulitis (Hinchey stage I-IV or I'-IV') between May 1994 and December 2008. Fifty-two patients underwent colon resection for Hinchey I-II or I'-II' disease; as LAPH in 36 and as OPH in 16. Only one patient required conversion to the open procedure after laparoscopy. RESULTS: The overall complication rate was significantly higher in the OPH group (43.8%) than in the LAPH group (16.7%; P < 0.05). Wound infection was significantly more common in the OPH group (37.5%) than in the LAPH group (11.1%; P < 0.05). Hospital stay was significantly shorter in the LAPH group (P < 0.05). Hartmann procedure was performed in one patient from each group. No anastomotic leakage occurred in either group. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that laparoscopic surgery can be performed safely and effectively even for patients with Hinchey I-II, I'-II' colonic diverticulitis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Transumbilical single-port surgery has been developed with the aim to further reduce the invasiveness of conventional laparoscopy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to report our experience with 31 patients who were treated with transumbilical single-incision laparoscopic colectomy for colon cancer. DESIGN: This is a retrospective review of prospectively gathered data. SETTINGS: This study was conducted at the Department of Surgery of Juntendo University Urayasu Hospital between April 2009 and April 2010. Data were obtained from a prospectively maintained single-institution laparoscopic colon cancer database. PATIENTS: Thirty-one consecutively selected patients (mean BMI, 22.5 ± 2.3) were evaluated. INTERVENTIONS: All patients underwent single-incision laparoscopic colectomy for colon cancer. Two different approaches were used for single-incision laparoscopic colectomy: the trocar insertion method and the SILS port method. The trocar insertion method was adopted in 22 of 31 patients, and the SILS port method was used in 9 patients. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The main measures of outcomes were intraoperative findings, postoperative course, and oncological outcomes. RESULTS: The most common procedure was sigmoid colon resection performed in 12 of 31 (39%) patients. The mean skin incision was 2.72 ± 0.79 (range, 3-5) cm. The operating time ranged from 101 to 263 (mean, 156 ± 45) minutes. The volume of bleeding ranged from 5 to 60 (mean, 27 ± 19) mL. No intraoperative complications were observed in this series. Postoperatively, there was no mortality. Wound infection was observed in 1 patient. The number of harvested lymph nodes was 18 ± 2.1, and the mean tumor-free resection margin was 11 ± 4.8 cm. CONCLUSION: Our experience indicates that single-incision laparoscopic colectomy is feasible for selected patients with colon cancer.
