OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of lung transplantations using grafts from donors aged over 70 years against those performed using younger donors. METHODS: This retrospective single-centre analysis includes lung transplants conducted at our institution from January 2014 to June 2022. Lung recipients were classified into 2 groups based on donor age (group A <70 years; group B ≥70 years). Variables regarding demographics, peri and postoperative outcomes and survival were included. The statistical analysis approach included univariable analysis, propensity score matching to address imbalances in donor variables (smoking status), recipient characteristics (sex, age, diagnosis and lung allocation score) and calendar period and survival analysis. RESULTS: A total of 353 lung transplants were performed in this period, 47 (13.3%) using grafts from donors aged over 70 years. Donors in group B were more frequently women (70.2% vs 51.6%, P = 0.017), with less smoking history (22% vs 43%, P = 0.002) and longer mechanical ventilation time (3 vs 2 days, P = 0.025). Recipients in group B had a higher lung allocation score (37.5 vs 35, P = 0.035). Postoperative variables were comparable between both groups, except for pulmonary function tests. Group B demonstrated lower forced expiratory volume 1 s levels (2070 vs 2580 ml, P = 0.001). The propensity score matching showed a lower chance of chronic lung allograft dysfunction by 12% for group B. One-, three- and five-year survival was equal between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The use of selected expanded-criteria donors aged over 70 years did not result in increased postoperative morbidity, early mortality or survival in this study.

Background: Obesity (OB) is a chronic metabolic disease with important associated comorbidities and mortality. Vitamin D supplementation is frequently administered after bariatric surgery (BS), so as to reduce OB-related complications, maybe including chronic inflammation. Aim: This study aimed to explore relations between vitamin D metabolites and components of the inflammasome machinery in OB before and after BS and their relations with the improvement of metabolic comorbidities. Patients and methods: Epidemiological/clinical/anthropometric/biochemical evaluation was performed in patients with OB at baseline and 6 months after BS. Evaluation of i) vitamin-D metabolites in plasma and ii) components of the inflammasome machinery and inflammatory-associated factors [NOD-like-receptors (NLRs), inflammasome-activation-components, cytokines and inflammation/apoptosis-related components, and cell-cycle and DNA-damage regulators] in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was performed at baseline and 6 months after BS. Clinical and molecular correlations/associations were analyzed. Results: Significant correlations between vitamin D metabolites and inflammasome-machinery components were observed at baseline, and these correlations were significantly reduced 6 months after BS in parallel to a decrease in inflammation markers, fat mass, and body weight. Treatment with calcifediol remarkably increased 25OHD levels, despite 24,25(OH)2D3 remained stable after BS. Several inflammasome-machinery components were associated with improvement in metabolic comorbidities, especially hypertension and dyslipidemia. Conclusion: The beneficial effects of vitamin D on OB-related comorbidities after BS patients are associated with significant changes in the molecular expression of key inflammasome-machinery components. The expression profile of these inflammasome components can be dynamically modulated in PBMCs after BS and vitamin D supplementation, suggesting that this profile could likely serve as a sensor and early predictor of the reversal of OB-related complications after BS.

Olive tree (Olea europaea) leaf extract (OELE) has important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, supporting its use in human clinical practice. We recently designed an amorphous hydrogel called EHO-85 (EHO indicates olive leaf extract in Spanish) containing OELE for skin ulcer treatments. Yet, its effectiveness has not been previously compared with other products used in routine clinical practice. This is necessary to evaluate its potential translation to the human clinic. Thus, in this study, the effect of EHO-85 on healing was evaluated in comparison with treatments containing Indian/Asiatic pennywort (Centella asiatica), hyaluronic acid, or dexpanthenol in a rat model. The speed of wound closure and histological parameters after seven and 14 days were analyzed. All treatments accelerated wound closure, but there were differences between them. Dexpanthenol after seven days produced the highest epithelialization and the lowest inflammation and vascularization. EHO-85 also promoted epithelialization and reduced vascularization. After 14 days, wounds treated with EHO-85 showed less inflammation and higher levels of collagen in the extracellular matrix. This indicates a higher degree of maturity in the regenerated tissue. In conclusion, the effect of EHO-85 on healing was equal to or superior to that of other treatments routinely used in human clinical practice. Therefore, these results, together with previous data on the effects of this hydrogel on ulcer healing in humans, indicate that EHO-85 is a suitable, low-cost, and efficient therapeutic option for wound healing.

PURPOSE: Although the prevalence of community-acquired respiratory bacterial coinfection upon hospital admission in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been reported to be < 5%, almost three-quarters of patients received antibiotics. We aim to investigate whether procalcitonin (PCT) or C-reactive protein (CRP) upon admission could be helpful biomarkers to identify bacterial coinfection among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. METHODS: We carried out a multicentre, observational cohort study including consecutive COVID-19 patients admitted to 55 Spanish intensive care units (ICUs). The primary outcome was to explore whether PCT or CRP serum levels upon hospital admission could predict bacterial coinfection among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The secondary outcome was the evaluation of their association with mortality. We also conducted subgroups analyses in higher risk profile populations. RESULTS: Between 5 February 2020 and 21 December 2021, 4076 patients were included, 133 (3%) of whom presented bacterial coinfection. PCT and CRP had low area under curve (AUC) scores at the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis [0.57 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.51-0.61) and 0.6 (95% CI, 0.55-0.64), respectively], but high negative predictive values (NPV) [97.5% (95% CI 96.5-98.5) and 98.2% (95% CI 97.5-98.9) for PCT and CRP, respectively]. CRP alone was associated with bacterial coinfection (OR 2, 95% CI 1.25-3.19; p = 0.004). The overall 15, 30 and 90 days mortality had a higher trend in the bacterial coinfection group, but without significant difference. PCT ≥ 0.12 ng/mL was associated with higher 90 days mortality. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that measurements of PCT and CRP, alone and at a single time point, are not useful for ruling in or out bacterial coinfection in viral pneumonia by COVID-19.

Vitamin D deficiency remains prevalent, with about 7% of the world's population living with severe vitamin D deficiency and about one third with mild deficiency. We compare the relative merits of calcifediol or 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) compared to vitamin D itself for supplementation as to prevent or cure vitamin D deficiency. The intestinal absorption of calcifediol is nearly 100% and thus higher than that of vitamin D itself. Moreover, calcifediol is absorbed by the intestinal cells and transported through the portal vein and thus immediately accessible to the circulation, while vitamin D is transported with chylomicrons through the lymph system. Therefore, in case of fat malabsorption or after bariatric surgery, calcifediol is much better absorbed in comparison with vitamin D itself. Serum 25OHD increases linearly with increasing doses of calcifediol, whereas serum 25OHD reaches a plateau when higher oral doses of vitamin D are used. Calcifediol, on a weight basis, is about 3 times more potent than vitamin D in subjects with mild vitamin D deficiency. This potency is even 6-8 times higher than vitamin D when baseline serum 25OHD is higher or when large doses are compared. In conclusion, calcifediol is an alternative option to correct vitamin D deficiency and may even be the preferred strategy in case of intestinal fat malabsorption, after bariatric surgery or in case of other conditions with suspected impaired 25-hydroxylase activity in the liver.

BACKGROUND: Delaying the transition from minimal cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's dementia is a major concern in Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapeutics. Pathological signs of AD occur years before the onset of clinical dementia. Thus, long-term therapeutic approaches, with safe, minimally invasive, and yet effective substances are recommended. There is a need to develop new drugs to delay Alzheimer's dementia. We have taken a nutritional supplement approach with genistein, a chemically defined polyphenol that acts by multimodal specific mechanisms. Our group previously showed that genistein supplementation is effective to treat the double transgenic (APP/PS1) AD animal model. METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, bicentric clinical trial, we evaluated the effect of daily oral supplementation with 120 mg of genistein for 12 months on 24 prodromal Alzheimer's disease patients. The amyloid-beta deposition was analyzed using 18F-flutemetamol uptake. We used a battery of validated neurocognitive tests: Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), Memory Alteration Test (M@T), Clock Drawing Test, Complutense Verbal Learning Test (TAVEC), Barcelona Test-Revised (TBR), and Rey Complex Figure Test. RESULTS: We report that genistein treatment results in a significant improvement in two of the tests used (dichotomized direct TAVEC, p = 0.031; dichotomized delayed Centil REY copy p = 0.002 and a tendency to improve in all the rest of them. The amyloid-beta deposition analysis showed that genistein-treated patients did not increase their uptake in the anterior cingulate gyrus after treatment (p = 0.878), while placebo-treated did increase it (p = 0.036). We did not observe significant changes in other brain areas studied. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that genistein may have a role in therapeutics to delay the onset of Alzheimer's dementia in patients with prodromal Alzheimer's disease. These encouraging results indicate that this should be followed up by a new study with more patients to further validate the conclusion that arises from this study. OBJECTIVES: Bronchial anastomotic complications remain a major concern in lung transplantation. We aim to compare 2 different techniques, continuous suture (CS) versus interrupted suture (IS) by analysing airway complications requiring intervention. METHODS: Lung transplantations between January 2015 and December 2020 were included. Airway complications requiring intervention were classified following the 2018 International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation consensus and analysed comparing 3 groups of patients according to surgical technique: group A, both anastomosis performed with CS; group B, both with interrupted; and group C, IS for 1 side and CS for the contralateral side. RESULTS: A total of 461 anastomoses were performed in 245 patients. The incidence of airway complications requiring intervention was 5.7% [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.8-8.6] per patient (14/245) and 3.7% (95% CI: 2.0-5.4) per anastomosis (17/461). Complications that required intervention were present in 5 out of 164 (3.1%) anastomosis with interrupted technique, and in 12/240 (5%) with CS. No significant differences were found between techniques (P = 0.184). No statistical differences were found among group A, B or C in terms of incidence of anastomotic complications, demographics, transplant outcomes or overall survival (log-rank P = 0.513). In a multivariable analysis, right laterality was significantly associated to complications requiring intervention (OR 3.7 [95% CI: 1.1-12.3], P = 0.030). Endoscopic treatment was successful in 12 patients (85.7%). Retransplantation was necessary in 2 patients. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, although it seems that anastomotic complications requiring intervention occur more frequently with CS, there are no statistical differences compared to IS. Endoscopic treatment offers good outcomes in most of the airway complications after lung transplantation.

The accuracy of screening tests for detecting cystic echinococcosis (CE) in livestock depends on characteristics of the host-parasite interaction and the extent of serological cross-reactivity with other taeniid species. The AgB8 kDa protein is considered to be the most specific native or recombinant antigen for immunodiagnosis of ovine CE. A particular DNA fragment coding for rAgB8/2 was identified, that provides evidence of specific reaction in the serodiagnosis of metacestode infection. We developed and validated an IgG Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test using a recombinant antigen B sub-unit EgAgB8/2 (rAgB8/2) of Echinoccocus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) to estimate CE prevalence in sheep. A 273 bp DNA fragment coding for rAgB8/2 was expressed as a fusion protein (∼30 kDa) and purified by affinity chromatography. Evaluation of the analytical and diagnostic performance of the ELISA followed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) manual, including implementation of serum panels from: uninfected lambs (n = 79); experimentally infected (with 2,000 E. granulosus s.l. eggs each) sheep with subsequent evidence of E. granulosus cysts by necropsy (n = 36), and animals carrying other metacestode/trematode infections (n = 20). The latter were used to assess the cross-reactivity of rAgB8/2, with these animals being naturally infected with Taenia hydatigena, Thysanosoma actinioides and/or Fasciola hepatica. EgAgB8/2 showed cross-reaction with only one serum sample from a sheep infected with Ta. hydatigena out of the 20 animals tested. Furthermore, the kinetics of the humoral response over time in five 6-month old sheep, each experimentally infected with 2,000 E. granulosus s.l. eggs, was evaluated up to 49 weeks (approximately one year) post infection (n = 5). The earliest detectable IgG response against rAgB8/2 was observed in sera from two and four sheep, 7 and 14 days after experimental infection, respectively. The highest immune response across all five animals was found 16 to 24 weeks post infection.

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4) is a ubiquitous protease that can be found in membrane-anchored or soluble form. Incretins are one of the main DPP4 substrates. These hormones regulate glucose levels, by stimulating insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon production. Because DPP4 levels are high in diabetes, DPP4 inhibitor (DPP4i) drugs derived from gliptin are widespread used as hypoglycemic agents for its treatment. However, as DPP4 recognizes other substrates such as chemokines, growth factors and neuropeptides, pleiotropic effects have been observed in patients treated with DPP4i. Several of these substrates are part of the stem-cell niche. Thus, they may affect different physiological aspects of mesenchymal stem-cells (MSC). They include viability, differentiation, mobilization and immune response. MSC are involved in tissue homeostasis and regeneration under both physiological and pathological conditions. Therefore, such cells and their secretomes have a high clinical potential in regenerative medicine. In this context, DPP4 activity may modulate different aspects of MSC regenerative capacity. Therefore, the aim of this review is to analyze the effect of different DPP4 substrates on MSC. Likewise, how the regulation of DPP4 activity by DPP4i can be applied in regenerative medicine. That includes treatment of cardiovascular and bone pathologies, cutaneous ulcers, organ transplantation and pancreatic beta-cell regeneration, among others. Thus, DPP4i has an important clinical potential as a complement to therapeutic strategies in regenerative medicine. They involve enhancing the differentiation, immunomodulation and mobilization capacity of MSC for regenerative purposes.

Phloretin (a flavonoid abundant in apple), has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and glucose-transporter inhibitory properties. Thus, it has interesting pharmacological and nutraceutical potential. Bone-marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have high differentiation capacity, being essential for maintaining homeostasis and regenerative capacity in the organism. Yet, they preferentially differentiate into adipocytes instead of osteoblasts with aging. This has a negative impact on bone turnover, remodeling, and formation. We have evaluated the effects of phloretin on human adipogenesis, analyzing MSC induced to differentiate into adipocytes. Expression of adipogenic genes, as well as genes encoding OPG and RANKL (involved in osteoclastogenesis), protein synthesis, lipid-droplets formation, and apoptosis, were studied. Results showed that 10 and 20 µM phloretin inhibited adipogenesis. This effect was mediated by increasing beta-catenin, as well as increasing apoptosis in adipocytes, at late stages of differentiation. In addition, this chemical increased OPG gene expression and OPG/RANKL ratio in adipocytes. These results suggest that this flavonoid (including phloretin-rich foods) has interesting potential for clinical and regenerative-medicine applications. Thus, such chemicals could be used to counteract obesity and prevent bone-marrow adiposity. That is particularly useful to protect bone mass and treat diseases like osteoporosis, which is an epidemic worldwide.

OBJECTIVES: Most transplant centres use donation after brain death (DBD) criteria to assess the quality of controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) lungs. However, research on the relationship between DBD extended criteria and cDCD lung transplantation outcomes is limited. We investigated the outcomes of using DBD extended criteria donor organs in cDCD lung transplantation, compared to the standard criteria cDCD lung transplantation. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of consecutive cDCD lung referrals to Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda from June 2013 to December 2019 was undertaken. Donors were divided into standard and extended criteria groups. Early outcomes after lung transplant were compared between these groups using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. RESULTS: Thirty out of 91 cDCD donor lung offers were accepted for transplantation, of which 11 were from standard criteria donors and 19 were extended criteria donors. The baseline characteristics of the 2 recipient groups were similar. There were no differences in the rates of grade 3 primary graft dysfunction at 72 h after lung transplantation (21% vs 18%), duration of mechanical ventilation (48 h vs 36 h), total intensive care unit stay (10 days vs 7 days) and 1-year survival (89% vs 90%). CONCLUSIONS: Carefully selecting cDCD lungs from outside the standard acceptability criteria may expand the existing donor pool with no detrimental effects on lung transplantation outcomes.

Extra virgin olive oil is characterized by its high content of unsaturated fatty acid residues in triglycerides, mainly oleic acid, and the presence of bioactive and antioxidant compounds. Its consumption is associated with lower risk of suffering chronic diseases and unwanted processes linked to aging, due to the antioxidant capacity and capability of its components to modulate cellular signaling pathways. Consumption of olive oil can alter the physiology of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). This may explain part of the healthy effects of olive oil consumption, such as prevention of unwanted aging processes. To date, there are no specific studies on the action of olive oil on MSCs, but effects of many components of such food on cell viability and differentiation have been evaluated. The objective of this article is to review existing literature on how different compounds of extra virgin olive oil, including residues of fatty acids, vitamins, squalene, triterpenes, pigments and phenols, affect MSC maintenance and differentiation, in order to provide a better understanding of the healthy effects of this food. Interestingly, most studies have shown a positive effect of these compounds on MSCs. The collective findings support the hypothesis that at least part of the beneficial effects of extra virgin olive oil consumption on health may be mediated by its effects on MSCs.

INTRODUCTION: Pain is an under-diagnosed problem in elderly people, especially in those with cognitive impairment who are unable to verbalise their pain. Although the Pain assessment in advanced dementia scale (PAINAD) scale is a tool recognised for its clinical interest in this type of patients, its correlation with the saliva biomarkers reinforced its utility. The aim of this research will be to correlate the scores of this scale with the levels of biomarkers of pain found in saliva samples of patients with cognitive impairment and inability to communicate. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is an observational study. The level of pain will be evaluated using the PAINAD scale. Moreover, pain biomarkers, in particular secretory IgA and soluble tumour necrosis factor receptor type II, will be determined in saliva. Both assessments will be conducted in 75 patients aged over 65 years with advanced cognitive impairment and inability to communicate. The PAINAD scores will be correlated with the levels of these biomarkers of pain. A control group consisting of 75 healthy subjects aged over 65 years will be included in the study. Moreover, sociodemographic variables and variables related to pain, dementia and other clinical conditions will be recorded. The analysis will be performed with the statistical package SPSS V.22 and the software R. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has been reviewed and approved by the Andalusian Human Research Ethics Committee. In addition, this study has been financed by the Junta de Andalucía through a regional health research fund (Research code: PI-0357-2017). The results will be actively disseminated trough a high-impact journal in our study area, conference presentations and social media.

Osteoporosis long-term treatment with nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates, has been associated with uncommon adverse effects, as atypical femoral fractures (AFF). Thus, treatment with teriparatide (TPTD; fragment of human parathyroid hormone; PTH1-34) has been proposed for such patients. Besides its anabolizing effect on bone, TPTD may affect stem-cell mobilization and expansion. Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNC) were isolated from five women that had suffered AFF associated to bisphosphonate treatment, before and after 6 months of TPTD therapy. The presence of mesenchymal stromal cells (CD73, CD90 and CD105 positive cells), gene expression of NANOG, SOX2 and OCT4, proliferation, senescence and capacity to differentiate into osteoblasts and adipocytes were analyzed. After TPTD treatment, BMMNC positive cells for CD73, CD90 and CD105 increased from 6.5 to 37.5% (p < 0.05); NANOG, SOX2 and OCT4 were upregulated, being statistically significant for NANOG (p < 0.05), and cells increased proliferative capacity more than 50% at day 7 (p < 0.05). Senescence was reduced 2.5-fold (p < 0.05), increasing differentiation capacity into osteoblasts and adipocytes, with more than twice mineralization capacity of extracellular matrix or fat-droplet formation (p < 0.05), respectively. Results show that TPTD treatment caused BMMNC "rejuvenation", increasing the number of cells in a more undifferentiated stage, with higher differentiation potency. This effect may favor TPTD anabolic action on bone in such patients with AFF, increasing osteoblast precursor cells. Such response could also arise in other osteoporotic patients treated with TPTD, without previous AFF. Furthermore, our data suggest that TPTD effect on stromal cells may have clinical implications for bone-regenerative medicine. Further studies may deepen on this potential.

BACKGROUND: A cadaveric feasibility study was carried out. Osteotomies to correct fixed sagittal imbalance are usually performed at L3/ L4. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of S1 pedicle subtraction osteotomy to correct spinal deformity and spinopelvic parameters, achieving better results with more limited exposure. The data obtained will allow a fixation construct specific for this osteotomy to be designed. METHODS: S1 pedicle subtraction osteotomy was performed on 12 cadaveric specimens. Baseline and postprocedural computed tomography and biomechanical studies were performed. Data were analyzed with a fixation system SolidWorks model, and the redesigned fixation construct was described and analyzed with an ANSYS model. RESULTS: S1 pedicle subtraction osteotomy is technically feasible. The fixation can be achieved with L4, L5, and iliac screws connected with bars. The system can be reinforced with a polyetheretherketone cage placed anteriorly in the S1 body osteotomy site, a cross-connecting bar, a double iliac screw, or an anterior interbody cage placed at the L5-S1 disc. The fixation strength is improved by angulating the iliac rod channel 10°, adding a semi-sphere to the locking screw contact surface and 2 fins to its saddle. The redesigned construct showed suitable stress and deformation levels, achieving the expected biomechanical requirements. DISCUSSION: Compared with surgery on higher levels, S1 pedicle subtraction osteotomy allows greater correction with shorter fixation, because the osteotomy is performed at a more caudal level, modifying the spinopelvic parameters. CONCLUSIONS: S1 pedicle subtraction osteotomy is technically feasible. Finite element analysis results indicate that it has appropriate biomechanical properties.

Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are a rare but potentially devastating event, often but not always linked to bisphosphonate (BP) therapy. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying AFFs remain obscure, and there are no tests available that might assist in identifying those at high risk of AFF. We previously used exome sequencing to explore the genetic background of three sisters with AFFs and three additional unrelated AFF cases, all previously treated with BPs. We detected 37 rare mutations (in 34 genes) shared by the three sisters. Notably, we found a p.Asp188Tyr mutation in the enzyme geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase, a component of the mevalonate pathway, which is critical to osteoclast function and is inhibited by N-BPs. In addition, the CYP1A1 gene, responsible for the hydroxylation of 17ß-estradiol, estrone, and vitamin D, was also mutated in all three sisters and one unrelated patient. Here we present a detailed list of the variants found and report functional analyses of the GGPS1 p.Asp188Tyr mutation, which showed a severe reduction in enzyme activity together with oligomerization defects. Unlike BP treatment, this genetic mutation will affect all cells in the carriers. RNAi knockdown of GGPS1 in osteoblasts produced a strong mineralization reduction and a reduced expression of osteocalcin, osterix, and RANKL, whereas in osteoclasts, it led to a lower resorption activity. Taken together, the impact of the mutated GGPPS and the relevance of the downstream effects in bone cells make it a strong candidate for AFF susceptibility. We speculate that other genes such as CYP1A1 might be involved in AFF pathogenesis, which remains to be functionally proved. The identification of the genetic background for AFFs provides new insights for future development of novel risk assessment tools. © 2018 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

SCOPE: ß-Cryptoxanthin is an abundant carotenoid in fruits and vegetables that can be quantified in human blood serum. Yet, contrary to other carotenoids, its effects on endothelial cells and angiogenesis remain unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) are treated with 0.01, 0.1, or 1 µm of ß-cryptoxanthin. Antioxidant activity is determined by its free radical scavenging and oxygen-radical absorbance capacity. The effect on migration and formation of tubular structures is studied. Additionally, effect on angiogenesis is also analyzed using an in vivo model. ß-Cryptoxanthin exhibits scavenging ability, having an antioxidant effect on HUVEC. Interestingly, ß-cryptoxanthin reduces their migration and angiogenesis, even in the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Additionally, such carotenoid inhibits in vivo angiogenesis induced by VEGF. In addition, treatment of HUVEC with LE540 (retinoic acid receptor [RAR] panantagonist) inhibits ß-cryptoxanthin antiangiogenic effect on HUVEC. CONCLUSION: ß-Cryptoxanthin inhibits angiogenesis through RAR. Thus, this carotenoid and food containing it may be useful for the prevention and treatment of angiogenic pathologies. That includes tumoral growth and wet macular degeneration associated with aging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the antioxidant effect and antiangiogenic activity of this carotenoid on HUVEC, both in vitro and in vivo.
