RESUMO

The reduction of GHG emissions to reverse the greenhouse effect is one of the main challenges in this century. In this paper we pursue two objectives. First, we analyze the evolution of GHG emissions in Spain in 2008-2018, at both the global and sectoral levels, with the variation in emissions decomposed into a set of determining factors. Second, we propose several actions specifically oriented to more tightly controlling the level of emissions. Our results showed a remarkable reduction (18.44%) in GHG emissions, mainly due to the intensity effect, but also to the production-per-capita effect. We detected somewhat different patterns among the various sectors analyzed. While the intensity effect was the most influential one in the agricultural, transport, and others sectors, the production-per-capita effect was predominant in the case of industry. The carbonization effect was revealed as crucial in the commerce sector. The above findings highlight the importance of the energy efficiency measures taken in recent years in the Spanish economy, also pointing to the need to deepen those strategies and to propose new measures that entail greater efficiency in emissions. Additional efforts in areas like innovation, R&D, diffusion of more eco-friendly technologies, and a greater use of greener energies all prove to be essential reduction actions to fight the greenhouse effect.

Scientific evidence exists about the association between neurological diseases (i.e., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis, depression, and memory loss) and oxidative damage. The increasing worldwide incidence of such diseases is attracting the attention of researchers to find palliative medications to reduce the symptoms and promote quality of life, in particular, in developing countries, e.g., South America and Africa. Among potential alternatives, extracts of Cannabis Sativa L. are suitable for people who have neurological disorders, spasticity, and pain, nausea, resulting from diseases such as cancer and arthritis. In this review, we discuss the latest developments in the use of Cannabis, its subtypes and constituents, extraction methods, and relevant pharmacological effects. Biomedical applications, marketed products, and prospects for the worldwide use of Cannabis Sativa L. extracts are also discussed, providing the bibliometric maps of scientific literature published in representative countries from South America (i.e., Brazil) and Africa (i.e., South Africa). A lack of evidence on the effectiveness and safety of Cannabis, besides the concerns about addiction and other adverse events, has led many countries to act with caution before changing Cannabis-related regulations. Recent findings are expected to increase the social acceptance of Cannabis, while new technologies seem to boost the global cannabis market because the benefits of (-)-trans-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) use have been proven in several studies in addition to the potential to general new employment.

High grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is a highly heterogeneous disease that typically presents at an advanced, metastatic state. The multi-scale complexity of HGSOC is a major obstacle to predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and understanding critical determinants of response. Here we present a framework to predict the response of HGSOC patients to NACT integrating baseline clinical, blood-based, and radiomic biomarkers extracted from all primary and metastatic lesions. We use an ensemble machine learning model trained to predict the change in total disease volume using data obtained at diagnosis (n = 72). The model is validated in an internal hold-out cohort (n = 20) and an independent external patient cohort (n = 42). In the external cohort the integrated radiomics model reduces the prediction error by 8% with respect to the clinical model, achieving an AUC of 0.78 for RECIST 1.1 classification compared to 0.47 for the clinical model. Our results emphasize the value of including radiomics data in integrative models of treatment response and provide methods for developing new biomarker-based clinical trials of NACT in HGSOC.

Snail1 is a transcriptional factor required for cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) activation, and mainly detected in CAFs in human tumors. In the mouse mammary tumor virus-polyoma middle tumor-antigen (MMTV-PyMT) model of murine mammary gland tumors, Snai1 gene deletion, besides increasing tumor-free lifespan, altered macrophage differentiation, with fewer expressing low levels of MHC class II. Snail1 was not expressed in macrophages, and in vitro polarization with interleukin-4 (IL4) or interferon-γ (IFNγ) was not altered by Snai1 gene depletion. We verified that CAF activation modified polarization of naïve bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMΦs). When BMDMΦs were incubated with Snail1-expressing (active) CAFs or with conditioned medium derived from these cells, they exhibited a lower cytotoxic capability than when incubated with Snail1-deleted (inactive) CAFs. Gene expression analysis of BMDMΦs polarized by conditioned medium from wild-type or Snai1-deleted CAFs revealed that active CAFs differentially stimulated a complex combination of genes comprising genes that are normally induced by IL4, downregulated by IFNγ, or not altered during the two canonical differentiations. Levels of RNAs relating to this CAF-induced alternative polarization were sensitive to inhibitors of factors specifically released by active CAFs, such as prostaglandin E2 and TGFß. Finally, CAF-polarized macrophages promoted the activation of the immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (T-regs). Our results imply that an active CAF-rich tumor microenvironment induces the polarization of macrophages to an immunosuppressive phenotype, preventing the macrophage cytotoxic activity on tumor cells and enhancing the activation of T-reg cells.

BACKGROUND: The specialized literature shows that breast cancer (BC) survivors have a certain vulnerability to express anxiety about the changes that the disease entails in their lives. Breast cancer is a specific adverse circumstance, but women who have not experienced this disease may also be exposed to other anxiety-provoking life crises. In both cases, perceived emotional intelligence (PEI)-consisting of emotional attention (EA), emotional clarity (EC), and emotional repair (ER)-seems to impact on such emotional distress. OBJECTIVE: To identify the mechanism through which PEI may mediate the relationship between BC survivorship, compared to a controlled group, and anxiety. METHODS: 636 women were divided into two groups: 56 BC survivors and 580 healthy controls. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale were administered. RESULTS: BC survivors differed from the control group in showing lower levels of EA and higher levels of ER. The global mediation model showed an explanatory capacity of 27% on anxiety (p = 0.000). Four significant indirect effects were obtained: two acted as risk pathways and the other two as protective pathways. The strongest effect indicated an increase in anxiety in BC survivors due to the mediated effect of low EA and EC. CONCLUSIONS: Knowing the impact of PEI on anxiety on disease survival could be the empirical basis for developing interventions to improve psychological adjustment at the end of treatments.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with cancer must learn and retain crucial information necessary to provide safe care for their child. Smartphone applications (apps) provide a significant opportunity to meet the informational needs of these parents. We aimed to develop, refine, and evaluate a smartphone app, informed by the Children's Oncology Group (COG) expert consensus recommendations, to support the informational needs of parents of children with cancer. PROCEDURE: We employed a user-centered iterative mixed-methods approach in two phases (prototype development/refinement and pilot testing). We engaged parents and clinicians in evaluating the app via qualitative interviews and standardized tools that measured app quality (Mobile Application Rating Scale [MARS]), usability (System Usability Scale [SUS]), and acceptability (System Acceptability Scale [SAS]). We evaluated early usage patterns after public release. RESULTS: Thirty-two parents and 17 clinicians participated. Mean (± standard deviation [SD]) scores for app quality, usability, and acceptability were: MARS: 4.5 ± 0.7 on a 5-point scale; SUS: 86.7 ± 23.8 on a 100-point scale; and SAS: superior (61%); similar (28%); inferior (11%) to written materials. Qualitative findings largely confirmed the quantitative data. Downloads of the app during the first year following public release have exceeded 5000. CONCLUSIONS: The COG KidsCare app prototype was found to be of high quality and received high usability and acceptability ratings. Further testing is needed to determine app effectiveness in improving parental knowledge regarding care of children with cancer.

Out of all the metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, the directed energy deposition (DED) technique, and particularly the wire-based one, are of great interest due to their rapid production. In addition, they are recognized as being the fastest technique capable of producing fully functional structural parts, near-net-shape products with complex geometry and almost unlimited size. There are several wire-based systems, such as plasma arc welding and laser melting deposition, depending on the heat source. The main drawback is the lack of commercially available wire; for instance, the absence of high-strength aluminum alloy wires. Therefore, this review covers conventional and innovative processes of wire production and includes a summary of the Al-Cu-Li alloys with the most industrial interest in order to foment and promote the selection of the most suitable wire compositions. The role of each alloying element is key for specific wire design in WAAM; this review describes the role of each element (typically strengthening by age hardening, solid solution and grain size reduction) with special attention to lithium. At the same time, the defects in the WAAM part limit its applicability. For this reason, all the defects related to the WAAM process, together with those related to the chemical composition of the alloy, are mentioned. Finally, future developments are summarized, encompassing the most suitable techniques for Al-Cu-Li alloys, such as PMC (pulse multicontrol) and CMT (cold metal transfer).

Spatial profiling of tissues promises to elucidate tumor-microenvironment interactions and enable development of spatial biomarkers to predict patient response to immunotherapy and other therapeutics. However, spatial biomarker discovery is often carried out on a single patient cohort or imaging technology, limiting statistical power and increasing the likelihood of technical artifacts. In order to analyze multiple patient cohorts profiled on different platforms, we developed methods for comparative data analysis from three disparate multiplex imaging technologies: 1) cyclic immunofluorescence data we generated from 102 breast cancer patients with clinical follow-up, in addition to publicly available 2) imaging mass cytometry and 3) multiplex ion-beam imaging data. We demonstrate similar single-cell phenotyping results across breast cancer patient cohorts imaged with these three technologies and identify cellular abundance and proximity-based biomarkers with prognostic value across platforms. In multiple platforms, we identified lymphocyte infiltration as independently associated with longer survival in triple negative and high-proliferation breast tumors. Then, a comparison of nine spatial analysis methods revealed robust spatial biomarkers. In estrogen receptor-positive disease, quiescent stromal cells close to tumor were more abundant in good prognosis tumors while tumor neighborhoods of mixed fibroblast phenotypes were enriched in poor prognosis tumors. In triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), macrophage proximity to tumor and B cell proximity to T cells were greater in good prognosis tumors, while tumor neighborhoods of vimentin-positive fibroblasts were enriched in poor prognosis tumors. We also tested previously published spatial biomarkers in our ensemble cohort, reproducing the positive prognostic value of isolated lymphocytes and lymphocyte occupancy and failing to reproduce the prognostic value of tumor-immune mixing score in TNBC. In conclusion, we demonstrate assembly of larger clinical cohorts from diverse platforms to aid in prognostic spatial biomarker identification and validation.

We report the use of a carboxylated pyrrolidine-fused chlorin (TCPC) as a fluorescent probe for the determination of glutathione (GSH) in 7.4 pH phosphate buffer. TCPC is a very stable, highly emissive molecule that has been easily obtained from meso-tetrakis(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) through a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition approach. First, we describe the coordination of TCPC with Hg(II) ions and the corresponding spectral changes, mainly characterized by a strong quenching of the chlorin emission band. Then, the TCPC-Hg2+ complex exhibits a significant fluorescence turn-on in the presence of low concentrations of the target analyte GSH. The efficacy of the sensing molecule was tested by using different TCPC:Hg2+ concentration ratios (1:2, 1:5 and 1:10) that gave rise to sigmoidal response curves in all cases with modulating detection limits, being the lowest 40 nM. The experiments were carried out under physiological conditions and the selectivity of the system was demonstrated against a number of potential interferents, including cysteine. Furthermore, the TCPC macrocycle did not showed a significant fluorescent quenching in the presence of other metal ions.

Studies of virus adsorption on surfaces with optimized properties have attracted a lot of interest, mainly due to the influence of the surface in the retention, orientation and stability of the viral capsids. Besides, viruses in whole or in parts can be used as cages or vectors in different areas, such as biomedicine and materials science. A key requirement for virus nanocage application is their physical properties, i.e. their mechanical response and the distribution of surface charge, which determine virus-substrate interactions and stability. In the present work we show two examples of viruses exhibiting strong surface interactions on homogeneous hydrophobic surfaces. The surfaces were prepared by titanate assisted organosilanization, a sol-gel spin coating process, followed by a mild annealing step. We show by surface and interface spectroscopies that the process allows trapping triethoxy-octylsilane (OCTS) molecules, exhibiting a hydrophobic alkane rich surface finishing. Furthermore, the surfaces remain flat and behave as more efficient sorptive surfaces for virus particles than mica or graphite (HOPG). Also, we determine by atomic force microscopy (AFM) the mechanical properties of two types of viruses (human adenovirus and reovirus) and compare the results obtained on the OCTS functionalized surfaces with those obtained on mica and HOPG. Finally, the TIPT+OCTS surfaces were validated as platforms for the morphological and mechanical characterization of virus particles by using adenovirus as initial model and using HOPG and mica as standard control surfaces. Then, the same characteristics were determined on reovirus using TIPT+OCTS and HOPG, as an original contribution to the catalogue of physical properties of viral particles.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia (AH) was first described by Wells and Whimster in 1969 as a benign vasoproliferative pathology with a varied infiltrate of eosinophils, lymphocytes, and plasmatic cells. Clinical presentation has been described in the literature as small red-bluish nodules, less than 3 cm in diameter that can bleed in 25% of the cases and be pruritic and painful in 37% and 20% of the cases, respectively. Particularly, AH can appear in the ear; nevertheless, other regions have been affected, including the scalp, lips, tongue, orbit, muscle, and bone. Most of these cases have occurred in adults with an unknown etiology; however, an inflammatory process has been associated in approximately 20% with eosinophilia. No malignancy has been reported.

Introducción: la capilaroscopia es un método no invasivo que permite observar la microvasculatura en el área periungueal. Los resultados informados pueden ser altamente variables entre distintos observadores. A lo largo del tiempo surgieron métodos cuantitativos y semicuantitativos para mejorar la reproducibilidad. Objetivos: conocer el nivel de acuerdo intra e interobservador al informar los diferentes patrones capilaroscópicos en individuos con diferente nivel de entrenamiento. Materiales y métodos: estudio de corte transversal. Participaron médicos reumatólogos especialistas y en formación que habían realizado previamente un curso virtual de capacitación en capilaroscopia. Recibieron 40 imágenes capilaroscópicas proyectadas en una presentación de PowerPoint y debían responder a través de un cuestionario digital. Se evaluó la concordancia de respuestas intra e interobservador. Resultados: se encontró un alto nivel de concordancia global con un kappa 0,66 IC 95% (0,63-0,70) p<0,0000. También en otros grupos como reumatólogos en formación: kappa 0,65 IC 95% (0,60-0,71) p=0,0000, y médicos reumatólogos: kappa 0,67 IC 95% (0,62-0,72) p=0,0000. Conclusiones: el nivel de concordancia encontrado fue globalmente alto, independientemente del nivel de entrenamiento de los profesionales, y de ser o no reumatólogo. La concordancia fue superior cuando se comparó a quienes tenían más de 4 años de experiencia en la realización de videocapilaroscopia.


Introduction: videoapillaroscopy is a non-invasive method that allows the observation of the microvasculature in the periungual area. Reported results can be highly variable between different observers. Over time, quantitative and semi-quantitative methods emerged to improve reproducibility. Objetives: to know the level of intra and interobserver agreement when reporting the different capillaroscopic patterns in individuals with different levels of training. Materials and methods: cross section study. Specialist rheumatologists and those in training who had previously completed a virtual capillaroscopy training course participated. They received 40 capillaroscopic images projected in a PowerPoint presentation and had to issue their response through a digital questionnaire. Concordance of intra and interobserver responses was evaluated. Results: a high level of global agreement was found with a kappa 0.66 CI 95% (0.63-0.70) p<0.0000, also in other groups such as rheumatologists in training: kappa 0.65 CI 95% (0.60-0.71) p=0.0000, physicians rheumatologists: kappa 0.67 95% CI (0.62-0.72) p=0.0000. Conclusions: the level of agreement found was globally high, regardless of the level of training of the professionals, and whether or not they were a rheumatologist. Concordance was higher when compared to those who had more than 4 years of experience performing videocapillaroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors are at high risk for developing new cancers (such as cervical and anal cancer) caused by persistent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV vaccination is effective in preventing the infections that lead to these cancers, but HPV vaccine uptake is low among young cancer survivors. Lack of a healthcare provider recommendation is the most common reason that cancer survivors fail to initiate the HPV vaccine. Strategies that are most successful in increasing HPV vaccine uptake in the general population focus on enhancing healthcare provider skills to effectively recommend the vaccine, and reducing barriers faced by the young people and their parents in receiving the vaccine. This study will evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of an evidence-based healthcare provider-focused intervention (HPV PROTECT) adapted for use in pediatric oncology clinics, to increase HPV vaccine uptake among cancer survivors 9 to 17 years of age. METHODS: This study uses a hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation approach. We will test the effectiveness of the HPV PROTECT intervention using a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial across a multi-state sample of pediatric oncology clinics. We will evaluate implementation (provider perspectives regarding intervention feasibility, acceptability and appropriateness in the pediatric oncology setting, provider fidelity to intervention components and change in provider HPV vaccine-related knowledge and practices [e.g., providing vaccine recommendations, identifying and reducing barriers to vaccination]) using a mixed methods approach. DISCUSSION: This multisite trial will address important gaps in knowledge relevant to the prevention of HPV-related malignancies in young cancer survivors by testing the effectiveness of an evidence-based provider-directed intervention, adapted for the pediatric oncology setting, to increase HPV vaccine initiation in young cancer survivors receiving care in pediatric oncology clinics, and by procuring information regarding intervention delivery to inform future implementation efforts. If proven effective, HPV PROTECT will be readily disseminable for testing in the larger pediatric oncology community to increase HPV vaccine uptake in cancer survivors, facilitating protection against HPV-related morbidities for this vulnerable population. Background: Pathological response to neoadjuvant treatment for patients with high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is assessed using the chemotherapy response score (CRS) for omental tumor deposits. The main limitation of CRS is that it requires surgical sampling after initial neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) treatment. Earlier and non-invasive response predictors could improve patient stratification. We developed computed tomography (CT) radiomic measures to predict neoadjuvant response before NACT using CRS as a gold standard. Methods: Omental CT-based radiomics models, yielding a simplified fully interpretable radiomic signature, were developed using Elastic Net logistic regression and compared to predictions based on omental tumor volume alone. Models were developed on a single institution cohort of neoadjuvant-treated HGSOC (n = 61; 41% complete response to NCT) and tested on an external test cohort (n = 48; 21% complete response). Results: The performance of the comprehensive radiomics models and the fully interpretable radiomics model was significantly higher than volume-based predictions of response in both the discovery and external test sets when assessed using G-mean (geometric mean of sensitivity and specificity) and NPV, indicating high generalizability and reliability in identifying non-responders when using radiomics. The performance of a fully interpretable model was similar to that of comprehensive radiomics models. Conclusions: CT-based radiomics allows for predicting response to NACT in a timely manner and without the need for abdominal surgery. Adding pre-NACT radiomics to volumetry improved model performance for predictions of response to NACT in HGSOC and was robust to external testing. A radiomic signature based on five robust predictive features provides improved clinical interpretability and may thus facilitate clinical acceptance and application.

Psycho-oncology research suggests that positive personal changes can occur after experiencing breast cancer. These changes can be understood as post-traumatic growth (PTG) and seem to be determined by emotional self-efficacy perception. This study aims to investigate the existence of different profiles of PTG and perceived emotional intelligence (PEI) among breast cancer survivors (BCSs) and healthy controls. Moreover, it aims to study the mechanisms through which PEI may mediate the relationship between disease survival and PTG. The total sample was 636 women divided into two groups: 56 BCS and 580 healthy controls who completed TMMS-24 and PTGI. The results displayed that BCSs apparently show a different profile of PTG and PEI compared to healthy women. The mediation analyses showed that survivorship explained 1.9% of PTG, increasing to 26.5% by the effect of PEI. An indirect effect showed that cancer survival predicts reduced levels of emotional attention, decreasing PTG. However, the most statistical indirect effect evidenced that BCSs regulate their emotions appropriately, having a powerful effect on PTG and counteracting the negative effects of poor emotional attention. Knowing the implications of PEI on PTG could improve follow-up from the time of diagnosis and supporting the patient to cope with the sequelae of the disease.

A nonparametric panel stationarity test is proposed which offers the advantage of not requiring prior specification of the trend function for each of the series in the panel. A bootstrap implementation of the test is outlined and its finite sample performance is analyzed via Monte Carlo simulations. An application is also included where the proposed test is used to analyze the stochastic properties of monthly crude oil production for a panel of 20 -both OPEC and non-OPEC- countries from 1973 to 2015. Our analysis detects strong evidence of non-stationarity, both globally and group-wise. Results have implications for the effectiveness of government intervention and stabilization policies.

OBJECTIVE: Among solid tumours, medulloblastoma is the most common of the posterior fossa neoplasms, given that it represents 15%-20% of childhood brain tumours. The main aim of the present study was to assess the effects of action observation training on the activities of daily living (ADL) and the manipulation skills of children with acquired brain injury secondary to an oncological process. METHODS: We recruited a consecutive convenience sample of 5 patients diagnosed with acquired brain injury secondary to an oncological process. ADL and manipulation skills were assessed using the ABILHAND-Kids and Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, respectively. After conducting the initial evaluation, we planned the intervention, which lasted 10 weeks and consisted of 40 sessions for each participant, 10 in the occupational therapy department and 30 at home. After completing the intervention, we re-evaluated the main variables. RESULTS: Overall, the results of the postintervention ABILHAND-Kids questionnaire showed a 5-point improvement, with a statistically significant difference and a large effect size. Eighty per cent of the sample showed better results in the total score, with differences between 4 and 8 points. In relation to manual dexterity, as measured by the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, there were no significant changes, except in one of the participants. CONCLUSION: It appears that action observation training can elicit positive changes with respect to the development of ADL, but the influence on manual dexterity was almost nonexistent.

Breast cancer is the malignancy with the highest incidence in women worldwide. The empirical evidence is inconsistent with the prevalence of depression among breast cancer survivors (BCS), pointing to emotional competencies as protective factors against affective disorders. However, the mechanisms through which these competencies favor a more adaptive emotional state are unknown. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between the experience of having survived the disease and depression levels in a group of BCS, and the mediating role of Perceived Emotional Intelligence (PEI) in this relation. This was a cross-sectional study with 237 women divided into two groups: 56 BCS and 181 healthy controls who completed the Trait Meta-Mood Scale 24 (TMMS-24) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results showed that Survivorship and PEI explained and predicted 37.8% of the variance of depression, corresponding the 11.7% to the direct and/or the indirect effect of the PEI dimensions (Emotional Attention, Emotional Clarity, and Emotional Repair). In conclusion, interventions aimed at promoting an adequate PEI in this population-and in the Psycho-oncology field, in general-with a particular focus on the development of Emotional Clarity and Repair need to be implemented. Limitations and future research lines are discussed.

The balance between laminin isoforms containing the α5 or the α4 chain in the endothelial basement membrane determines the site of leukocyte diapedesis under inflammatory conditions. Extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3) induces laminin α4 expression in tumor blood vessels, which is associated with enhanced intratumor T cell infiltration in primary human cancers. We show now that SOD3 overexpression in neoplastic and endothelial cells (ECs) reduces laminin α5 in tumor blood vessels. SOD3 represses the laminin α5 gene (LAMA5), but LAMA5 expression is not changed in SOD1-overexpressing cells. Transcriptomic analyses revealed SOD3 overexpression to change the transcription of 1682 genes in ECs, with the canonical and non-canonical NF-κB pathways as the major SOD3 targets. Indeed, SOD3 reduced the transcription of well-known NF-κB target genes as well as NF-κB-driven promoter activity in ECs stimulated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, an NF-κB signaling inducer. SOD3 inhibited the phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα (nuclear factor of the kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B-cells inhibitor alpha), an NF-κB inhibitor. Finally, TNF-α was found to be a transcriptional activator of LAMA5 but not of LAMA4; LAMA5 induction was prevented by SOD3. In conclusion, SOD3 is a major regulator of laminin balance in the basement membrane of tumor ECs, with potential implications for immune cell infiltration into tumors.

Introducción: Las úlceras del pie diabético constituyen una de las principales causas de morbilidad y discapacidad, con una importante repercusión por la carga económica de la enfermedad y desde el punto de vista social, por la disminución de la calidad de vida de los pacientes. Objetivo: Evaluar costos y resultado del tratamiento ambulatorio con el Heberprot P® para la atención al paciente con úlcera del pie diabético. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, longitudinal y retrospectivo de 22 pacientes con pie diabético tratados con Heberprot-P®, en la consulta para tales fines del Policlínico Ramón López Peña en el año 2019. Resultados: El 63,6 por ciento de los pacientes que acudieron a consulta presentaron Pie de Riesgo grado cero; la úlcera neuroinfecciosa fue la de mayor incidencia de presentación (94,5 por ciento). Se obtuvo una efectividad del 95,4 por ciento del total de los casos tratados. La mayoría de los tratados necesitaron entre 3-8 bulbos del medicamento, con un promedio de 5 sesiones de tratamiento por paciente, a un costo promedio de $ 3 549,8 /caso tratado. Conclusiones: El tratamiento con el Heberprot P® es altamente efectivo para la cicatrización de las UPD, evitando en gran medida las amputaciones de los miembros inferiores de los pacientes con diabetes mellitus, con una consiguiente disminución del costo económico que tienen estas intervenciones sanitarias para el país(AU)


Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcer is one of the main causes of morbidity and disability, with an important repercussion due to the economic burden of the disease and from the social point of view, due to the decrease in patients' quality of life. Objective: To assess costs and outcomes of outpatient treatment with Heberpro-P® for the care of patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study was carried out of 22 patients with diabetic foot treated with Heberprot-P®, in the consultation for such purposes of Ramón López Peña Polyclinic in 2019. Results: 63.6 percent of the patients who came for consultation presented zero risk foot; neuroinfectious ulcer was the one with the highest incidence of presentation (94.5 percent). An effectiveness rate of 95.4 percent of the total of treated cases was obtained. Most of those treated needed three to eight bulbs of the medication, with an average of five treatment sessions per patient, at an average cost of 3549.8 Cuban pesos per treated case. Conclusions: Treatment with Heberprot-P® is highly effective for the healing of diabetic foot ulcers, largely avoiding amputations of lower limbs of patients with diabetes mellitus, with a consequent decrease in the economic cost of these health interventions for the country(AU)
