RESUMO
Our aim was to give a morphometric description of the interproximal bone between the anterior maxillary teeth of subjects with class III facial deformity, who were candidates for segmented Le Fort I osteotomy. We measured the width of the interproximal bone from the upper right canine to the upper left canine in cone-beam computed tomographic images of 35 subjects, and identified five interproximal areas of measurement. The lower and upper measurements were established 5mm and 10mm from the cervical crest of the interproximal bone. A paired samples t test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were applied and probabilities of less than 0.05 were accepted as significant. In all the scans of interproximal bone, the apical zone was significantly wider than the inferior zone (p<0.001). The area between the central incisors was the widest, with a mean (SD) of 2.42 (0.68) mm in the lower, and 4.27 (0.99) mm in the upper, region followed by the space between the canines and lateral incisors. The minimum interproximal spaces in the lowest area were between 1.1 and 1.5mm, which suggested the potential for damage to the teeth during segmental osteotomy. The interproximal spaces were at potential risk of dental and periodontal injuries, and the area between the central incisors seemed to be most suited to interproximal osteotomies in "surgery first".

This case report describes the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) findings of primary lymphadenopathic Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in a 44-year-old African heterosexual male who is immunocompetent and has no clinical or serological evidence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or the endemic form of KS. The cytological findings emphasize the role of FNA in the diagnosis of KS and draw the attention to the fact that a diagnosis of KS in an African man is not synonymous with the diagnosis of AIDS or endemic/African KS. A description of other spindle cell intranodal lesions which may mimick KS is given with a discussion of the differential diagnoses that should be considered in such cases by the cytopathologist.

The wisdom tooth is the last permanent tooth to erupt into the oral cavity. Its eruption, however, can be impeded and the tooth may become impacted. The incidence of such a condition may be influenced by local as well as racial factors. In this article, an attempt was made to establish the incidence of impacted wisdom teeth in a small sample of the Saudi population.

An unusual case of mandibular fracture is presented. Against the wishes of the oral surgeons, the patient refused to have the prescribed treatment. A year later healing was complete, with no residual complications.

Two case reports are presented which illustrate the disadvantage of using curved surface tomography to investigate the maxilla. This technique should be considered as a supplement to diagnostic radiography of the maxillary sinus and not as a substitute for conventional radiography.

A case of contact dermatitis due to the pre-operative preparation of the skin with 'Savlon'1 is described. Testing suggested that this was due to cetrimide. The nature of this reaction, its investigation and treatment, are discussed.

With the ever increasing of facial trauma, a study has been carried out on some aspects of zygomatic complex fractures in a part of Scotland. The results were different in some aspects from those reported in the literature, but they endorse the findings of a similar study which was carried out in the Eastern regions of Scotland (Hitchen & Shuker, 1973).
