RESUMO

Bracken fern (Pteridium spp.) is a highly problematic plant worldwide due to its toxicity in combination with invasive properties on former farmland, in deforested areas and on disturbed natural habitats. The carcinogenic potential of bracken ferns has caused scientific and public concern for six decades. Its genotoxic effects are linked to illudane-type glycosides (ITGs), their aglycons and derivatives. Ptaquiloside is considered the dominating ITG, but with significant contributions from other ITGs. The present review aims to compile evidence regarding environmental pollution by bracken fern ITGs, in the context of their human and animal health implications. The ITG content in bracken fern exhibits substantial spatial, temporal, and chemotaxonomic variation. Consumption of bracken fern as food is linked to human gastric cancer but also causes urinary bladder cancers in bovines browsing on bracken. Genotoxic metabolites are found in milk and meat from bracken fed animals. ITG exposure may also take place via contaminated water with recent data pointing to concentrations at microgram/L-level following rain events. Airborne ITG-exposure from spores and dust has also been documented. ITGs may synergize with major biological and environmental carcinogens like papillomaviruses and Helicobacter pylori to induce cancer, revealing novel instances of chemical and biological co-carcinogenesis. Thus, the emerging landscape from six decades of bracken research points towards a global environmental problem with increasingly complex health implications.

RESUMO

Delirium is common in hospitalised patients, and there is currently no specific treatment. Identifying and treating underlying somatic causes of delirium is the first priority once delirium is diagnosed. Several international guidelines provide clinicians with an evidence-based approach to screening, diagnosis and symptomatic treatment. However, current guidelines do not offer a structured approach to identification of underlying causes. A panel of 37 internationally recognised delirium experts from diverse medical backgrounds worked together in a modified Delphi approach via an online platform. Consensus was reached after five voting rounds. The final product of this project is a set of three delirium management algorithms (the Delirium Delphi Algorithms), one for ward patients, one for patients after cardiac surgery and one for patients in the intensive care unit.

Plants produce a diverse array of toxic compounds which may be released by precipitation, explaining their wide occurrence in surrounding soil and water. This study presents the first mechanistic model for describing the generation and environmental fate of a natural toxin, i.e. ptaquiloside (PTA), a carcinogenic phytotoxin produced by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum L. Kuhn). The newly adapted DAISY model was calibrated based on two-year monitoring performed in the period 2018-2019 in a Danish bracken population located in a forest glade. Several functions related to the fate of PTA were calibrated, covering processes from toxin generation in the canopy, wash off by precipitation and degradation in the soil. Model results show a good description of observed bracken biomass and PTA contents, supporting the assumption that toxin production can be explained by the production of new biomass. Model results show that only 4.4 % of the PTA produced in bracken is washed off by precipitation, from both canopy and litter. Model simulations showed that PTA degrades rapidly once in the soil, especially during summer due to the high soil temperatures. Leaching takes place in form of pulses directly connected to precipitation events, with maximum simulated concentrations up to 4.39 µg L-1 at 50 cm depth. Macropore transport is mainly responsible for the events with the highest PTA concentrations, contributing to 72 % of the total mass of PTA leached. Based on the results, we identify areas with high density of bracken, high precipitation during the summer and soils characterized by fast transport, as the most vulnerable to surface and groundwater pollution by phytotoxins.

Vinyl chloride (VC) is a dominant carcinogenic residual in many aged chlorinated solvent plumes, and it remains a huge challenge to clean it up. Zerovalent iron (ZVI) is an effective reductant for many chlorinated compounds but shows low VC removal efficiency at field scale. Amendment of ZVI with a carbonaceous material may be used to both preconcentrate VC and facilitate redox reactions. In this study, nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) produced by a simple co-pyrolysis method using urea as nitrogen (N) source, was tested as a catalyst for VC reduction by nanoscale ZVI (nZVI). The extent of VC reduction to ethylene in the presence of 2 g/L of nZVI was less than 1% after 3 days, and barely improved with the addition of 4 g/L of graphene. In contrast, with amendment of nZVI with NG produced at pyrolysis temperature (PT) of 950 °C, the VC reduction extent increased more than 10-fold to 69%. The reactivity increased with NG PT increasing from 400 °C to an optimum at 950 °C, and it increased linearly with NG loadings. Interestingly, N dosage had little effect on reactivity if NG was produced at PT of 950 °C, while a positive correlation was observed for NG produced at PT of 600 °C. XPS and Raman analyses revealed that for NG produced at lower PT (<800 °C) mainly the content of pyridine-N-oxide (PNO) groups correlates with reactivity, while for NG produced at higher PT up to 950 °C, reactivity correlates mainly with N induced structural defects in graphene. The results of quenching and hydrogen yield experiments indicated that NG promote reduction of VC by storage of atomic hydrogen, thus increasing its availability for VC reduction, while likely also enabling electron transfer from nZVI to VC. Overall, these findings demonstrate effective chemical reduction of VC by a nZVI-NG composite, and they give insights into the effects of N doping on redox reactivity and hydrogen storage potential of carbonaceous materials.

The impact of land use type on the content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and the associated ecological and human health risks has drawn great attention. Consequently, in this study, top- and subsurface soil samples were collected from areas with four different land uses (i.e., cropland, forest, grassland, and developed area) and the total contents of Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined. Geostatistical analysis, self-organizing map (SOM), and positive matrix factorization (PMF), ecological risk assessment (ERA) and human health risk assessment (HRA) were applied and used to classify and identify the contamination sources and assess the potential risk. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was applied to clarify the relationship of land use with PTE contents and risk. The PTE contents in all topsoil samples surpassed the respective background concentrations of China and corresponding subsurface concentrations. However, the ecological risk of all soil samples remained at a moderate or considerable level across the four land use types. Developed area and cropland showed a higher ecological risk than the other two land use types. Industrial discharges (32.8%), agricultural inputs (22.6%), natural sources (23.7%), and traffic emissions (20.9%) were the primary PTE sources in the tested soils, which indicate that anthropogenic activities have significantly affected soil PTE contents to a greater extent than other sources. Industrial discharge was the most prominent source of non-carcinogenic health risk, contributing 37.7% for adults and 35.2% for children of the total risk. The results of PLS-PM revealed that land use change associated with intensive human activities such as industrial activities and agricultural practices distinctly affected the PTE contents in soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

BACKGROUND: Oilseed rape requires sulfur (S) fertilization. Cadmium (Cd) differs dramatically in agricultural soils. Rice-oilseed rape rotation distributes widely and contributes the majority of rapeseeds in Asian countries. It was reported that S metabolism was involved in Cd uptake in seedlings of oilseed rape, although the effects of S on Cd accumulation and seed yield at maturity are still unclear. RESULTS: We performed a pot experiment including two Cd rates (0.35 and 10.35 mg kg-1 , as low and high Cd soil) and four S levels (0, 30, 60 and 120 mg kg-1 ). The results showed that low S application (30 mg kg-1 ) resulted in two-fold higher seed-Cd concentration irrespective of soil Cd levels. The responsible mechanism might be that Cd translocation into rapeseeds was involved in sulfate transporters, which could be strongly expressed in shoots and roots when supplying sulfate under S-starvation conditions, but depressed under a S-sufficient environment. For high Cd soil, seed yield decreased by 36%, 48% and 72% at 30, 60 and 120 mg S kg-1 compared to non-S treatment, whereas there were no differences for low Cd soil. Antagonistic effects of S and Cd existed for seed yield according to structure equation model analysis. CONCLUSION: Oilseed rape can be grown in low-Cd fields as a safe food crop with high levels of sulfur fertilizers (>60 mg S kg-1 ). In high-Cd fields, oilseed rape is recommended as a Cd-remediation crop, and rapeseeds should only be used for industrial purposes and not for food. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Disorientation may present as a warning sign of developing delirium. The most commonly used delirium assessment tool in Germany, the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU), does not rate "disorientation", since intubated patients cannot communicate verbally. However, the majority of German ICU patients are not orally intubated, so they could be examined for their orientation. This study was carried out to investigate whether the delirium feature "disorientation" in extubated patients yields diverging findings in comparison to the CAM-ICU and whether the sensitivity of the CAM-ICU may be improved when combined with the feature "disorientation" (CAM-IMC). A total of 86 paired assessments were completed in 50 extubated patients. Delirium was found in 19.8% (N = 17). The CAM-ICU had a sensitivity of 71% (95% confidence interval [CI] 44-90%) and a specificity of 100% (95-100%). Disorientation, if taken as the only delirium feature, had a sensitivity of 77% (50-93%) and a specificity of 93% (89-100%). The CAM-IMC reached a sensitivity of 88% (64-99%) and a specificity of 100% (95-100%). The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses found an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.941 (95%CI 0.851-1.000) for the CAM-IMC, which was the highest compared to the other delirium tests (CAM-ICU, AUC 0.853 [0.720-0.986]; disorientation, AUC 0.868 [0.745-0.991]). This research emphasizes the importance of the feature "disorientation" for delirium assessments in patients able to verbally communicate and explains some controversial delirium ratings in daily practice. The CAM-IMC appears to be an attractive tool for delirium assessment in nonintubated patients and deserves further research.

Nitrate reduction to ammonium followed by ammonium capture and reuse, represent a new pathway to recycle nitrogen, prevent eutrophication, and to save energy used for industrial ammonium production. The present study investigates the principle of nitrogen recycling to agricultural drainage water using a coupled zero-valent iron (ZVI) and zeolite-based filter column system tested in laboratory and field continuous-flow experiments. A 40-day laboratory test showed 82% nitrate removal, of which 70% was converted to ammonium. In the following pilot scale field test, a total of 59.2 m3 (1700 pore volumes) drainage water with a nitrate concentration of 2-8 mg L-1 NO3--N was filtrated. An oxidizing unit inserted after the ZVI unit removed iron(II) and optimized ammonium retention in the zeolite unit. Nitrate removal efficiency was 94% for the entire 56-day period with a slight pH increase (pH 8.9). All ammonium produced was retained by the zeolite unit. Formation of green rust carbonate (layered FeII-FeIII-hydroxide) was observed on ZVI particle surfaces, which may increase the redox capacity of the filter system by up to 50% and contribute to its cost-efficiency. Moreover, all phosphate in the influent waters with concentrations between 0.1 and 0.5 mg L-1 was retained due to sorption by iron oxides in the system. Corrosion products formed cause partial filter clogging and should be removed by regular cleaning and backflushing. In conclusion, the ZVI - zeolite coupled filter system serves as a promising and cost-effective technology for nutrient removal and ammonium retention from agricultural drainage water.

Phytotoxins - toxins produced by plants - are contaminants with the potential to impair drinking water quality. They encompass a large group of toxic, partially persistent compounds that have been detected in seepage waters and in shallow wells used for drinking water production. If phytotoxins enter wells used for drinking water production, it is essential to know if the drinking water treatment processes will remove them from the water phase. However, it is currently unknown whether phytotoxins remain stable during traditional groundwater treatment using sand filters as the main treatment process. The objective of this study is to investigate removal potential of phytotoxins in biological sand filters and to asses if the removal potential is similar at different waterworks. Microcosms were set up with filter sand and drinking water collected at different groundwater-based waterworks. To be able to monitor phytotoxin removal ptaquiloside, caudatoside, gramine, sparteine, jacobine N-oxide, senecionine N-oxide and caffeine were applied at initial concentrations of 300 µg L-1, which is approx. two orders of magnitude higher than currently detected in environment, but expected to cover extreme environmental conditions. Removal was monitored over a period of 14 days. Despite the high initial concentration, all filter sands removed ptaquiloside and caudatoside completely from the water phase and at waterworks where pellet softening was implemented (pH 8.4) prior to rapid sand filtration, complete removal occurred within the first 30 min. All filter sands removed gramine and sparteine, primarily by a biological process, while jacobine N-oxide, senecionine N-oxide and caffeine were recalcitrant in the filter sands. During degradation of ptaquiloside and caudatoside we observed formation and subsequent removal of degradation products pterosin B and A. Filter sands with the highest removal potential were characterised by high contents of deposited iron and manganese oxides and hence large specific surface areas. Difference between bacterial communities investigated by 16S rRNA gene analyses did not explain different removal in the filter sands. All five investigated filter sands showed similar degradation patterns regardless of water chemistry and waterworks of origin. In drinking water treatment systems biological sand filters might therefore remove phytotoxin contaminants such as ptaquiloside, caudatoside, gramine, sparteine, while for other compounds e.g. jacobine N-oxide, senecionine N-oxide further investigations involving more advanced treatment options are needed.

We investigated how sulfur (S) application prior to wheat cultivation under wheat-rice rotation influences the uptake of cadmium (Cd) in rice grown in low- and high-Cd soils. A pot experiment was conducted with four S levels (0, 30, 60, 120 mg S kg-1) and two Cd rates (low and high, 0.35 and 10.35 mg Cd kg-1) supplied to wheat. Part of the wheat straw was returned to the soil before planting rice, which was cultivated for 132 days. To explore the key mechanisms by which S application controlled Cd accumulation in brown rice, (1) soil pore water at the key growth stages was sampled, and dissolved Cd and S species concentrations were determined; (2) rice plant tissues (including iron plaque on the root surface) were sampled at maturity for Cd and S analysis. With increasing S level, Cd accumulation in brown rice peaked at 60 mg S kg-1, irrespective of soil Cd levels. For high-Cd soils, concentrations of Cd in brown rice increased by 57%, 228%, and 100% at 30, 60, and 120 mg S kg-1, respectively, compared with no S treatment. The increase in brown rice Cd by low S levels (0-60 mg kg-1) could be attributed to (1) the S-induced increase in soil pore water sulfate increasing the Cd influx into rice roots and (2) the S-induced increase in leaf S promoting Cd translocation into brown rice. However, brown rice Cd decreased at 120 mg S kg-1 due to (1) low Cd solubility at 120 mg S kg-1 and (2) root and leaf S uptake, which inhibited Cd uptake. Sulfur application to wheat crop increased the risk of Cd accumulation in brown rice. Thus, applying S-containing fertilizers to Cd-contaminated paddy soils is not recommended.

BACKGROUND: Chronic spinal pain is the most prevalent chronic disease with employment of multiple modes of interventional techniques including epidural interventions. Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs), observational studies, systematic reviews, and guidelines have been published. The recent review of the utilization patterns and expenditures show that there has been a decline in utilization of epidural injections with decrease in inflation adjusted costs from 2009 to 2018. The American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) published guidelines for interventional techniques in 2013, and guidelines for facet joint interventions in 2020. Consequently, these guidelines have been prepared to update previously existing guidelines. OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence-based guidance in performing therapeutic epidural procedures, including caudal, interlaminar in lumbar, cervical, and thoracic spinal regions, transforaminal in lumbar spine, and percutaneous adhesiolysis in the lumbar spine. METHODS: The methodology utilized included the development of objective and key questions with utilization of trustworthy standards. The literature pertaining to all aspects of epidural interventions was viewed with best evidence synthesis of available literature and  recommendations were provided. RESULTS: In preparation of the guidelines, extensive literature review was performed. In addition to review of multiple manuscripts in reference to utilization, expenditures, anatomical and pathophysiological considerations, pharmacological and harmful effects of drugs and procedures, for evidence synthesis we have included 47 systematic reviews and 43 RCTs covering all epidural interventions to meet the objectives.The evidence recommendations are as follows: Disc herniation: Based on relevant, high-quality fluoroscopically guided epidural injections, with or without steroids, and results of previous systematic reviews, the evidence is Level I for caudal epidural injections, lumbar interlaminar epidural injections, lumbar transforaminal epidural injections, and cervical interlaminar epidural injections with strong recommendation for long-term effectiveness.The evidence for percutaneous adhesiolysis in managing disc herniation based on one high-quality, placebo-controlled RCT is Level II with moderate to strong recommendation for long-term improvement in patients nonresponsive to conservative management and fluoroscopically guided epidural injections. For thoracic disc herniation, based on one relevant, high-quality RCT of thoracic epidural with fluoroscopic guidance, with or without steroids, the evidence is Level II with moderate to strong recommendation for long-term effectiveness.Spinal stenosis: The evidence based on one high-quality RCT in each category the evidence is Level III to II for fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural injections with moderate to strong recommendation and Level II for fluoroscopically guided lumbar and cervical interlaminar epidural injections with moderate to strong recommendation for long-term effectiveness.The evidence for lumbar transforaminal epidural injections is Level IV to III with moderate recommendation with fluoroscopically guided lumbar transforaminal epidural injections for long-term improvement. The evidence for percutaneous adhesiolysis in lumbar stenosis based on relevant, moderate to high quality RCTs, observational studies, and systematic reviews is Level II with moderate to strong recommendation for long-term improvement after failure of conservative management and fluoroscopically guided epidural injections. Axial discogenic pain: The evidence for axial discogenic pain without facet joint pain or sacroiliac joint pain in the lumbar and cervical spine with fluoroscopically guided caudal, lumbar and cervical interlaminar epidural injections, based on one relevant high quality RCT in each category is Level II with moderate to strong recommendation for long-term improvement, with or without steroids. Post-surgery syndrome: The evidence for lumbar and cervical post-surgery syndrome based on one relevant, high-quality RCT with fluoroscopic guidance for caudal and cervical interlaminar epidural injections, with or without steroids, is Level II with moderate to strong recommendation for long-term improvement. For percutaneous adhesiolysis, based on multiple moderate to high-quality RCTs and systematic reviews, the evidence is Level I with strong recommendation for long-term improvement after failure of conservative management and fluoroscopically guided epidural injections. LIMITATIONS: The limitations of these guidelines include a continued paucity of high-quality studies for some techniques and various conditions including spinal stenosis, post-surgery syndrome, and discogenic pain. CONCLUSIONS: These epidural intervention guidelines including percutaneous adhesiolysis were prepared with a comprehensive review of the literature with methodologic quality assessment and determination of level of evidence with strength of recommendations.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are persistent mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds produced by many common plant species. Health authorities recommend minimising human exposure via food and medicinal products to ensure consumer health and safety. However, there is little awareness that PAs can contaminate water resources. Therefore, no regulations exist to limit PAs in drinking water. This study measured a PA base concentration of ~ 70 ng/L in stream water adjacent to an invasive PA-producing plant Petasites hybridus (Asteraceae). After intense rain the PA concentration increased tenfold. In addition, PAs measured up to 230 ng/L in seepage water from groundwater wells. The dominant PAs in both water types corresponded to the most abundant PAs in the plants (senkirkine, senecionine, senecionine N-oxide). The study presents the first discovery of persistent plant toxins in well water and their associated risks. In addition, it for the first time reports monocrotaline and monocrotaline N-oxide in Petasites sp.

The formation of blister in the injection moulded parts, especially in the film insert moulded parts, is one of most significant causes of part rejection due to cosmetic requirements or functionality issues. The mechanism and physics of blister formation for molded parts are not well-understood by the state-of-the-art literature. The current paper increases the fundamental understanding of the causes for blister formation. In the experiment, a membrane strip of 5 mm in width was overmoulded with Polypropylene (PP), which formed a disc-shaped part with a diameter of 17.25 mm and a thickness of 500 µm. To investigate the influence of the processing parameters, a full factorial design of experiments (DoE) setup was conducted, including mould temperature (Tm), barrel temperature (Tb), injection speed (Vi) and packing pressure (Pp) as variables. The degree of blistering at the surface was characterized by the areal surface roughness parameters Spk and Smr1, measured with a confocal laser microscope. The measurements were taken on the 10 mm long section of the membrane surface in the centre of the moulded part across the entire width of the film. In addition, the film insert moulding (FIM)-process was simulated and the average shrinkage of the substrate material under the membrane was investigated. Eventually, a method and processing window could be defined that could produce blister-free parts.

Ptaquiloside (PTA) is an illudane glycoside partly responsible for the carcinogenicity of bracken ferns (Pteridium sp.). The PTA analogues ptesculentoside (PTE) and caudatoside (CAU) have similar biochemical reactivity. However, both compounds are highly under-investigated due to the lack of analytical standards and appropriate methods. This study presents a robust method for preparation of analytical standards of PTE, CAU, PTA, the corresponding hydrolysis products: pterosins G, A and B, and an LC-MS based method for simultaneous quantification of the six compounds in bracken. The chromatographic separation of analytes takes 5 min. The observed linear range of quantification was 20-500 µg/L for PTA and pterosin B, and 10-250 µg/L for the remaining compounds (r > 0.999). The limits of detection were 0.08-0.26 µg/L for PTE, CAU and PTA and 0.01-0.03 µg/L for the pterosins, equivalent to 2.0-6.5 µg/g and 0.25-0.75 µg/g in dry weight, respectively. The method was applied on 18 samples of dried fern leaves from 6 continents. Results demonstrated high variation in concentrations of PTE, CAU and PTA with levels prior to hydrolysis up to 3,900, 2,200 and 2,100 µg/g respectively. This is the first analytical method for simultaneous and direct measurement of all six compounds. Its application demonstrated that bracken ferns contain significant amounts of PTE and CAU relative to PTA.

Adsorption onto two-dimensional nanosheet materials offers new possibilities for fast and efficient removal of contaminants from waters. Here, the adsorption of As(V) to a new type of iron oxides - single sheet iron oxide (SSI) - has been studied as a function of time, loading and pH. Adsorption of As(V) onto SSI was very fast compared to other iron oxides, with 80% of total As(V) adsorbed within 10 min. Examination by extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis showed that As(V) forms a bidentate inner-sphere surface complex with SSI. Arsenic(V) adsorption isotherms and adsorption envelopes were well described using a 1-pK Basic Stern surface complexation model involving protonated (Fe2O2AsO2H-) and unprotonated (Fe2O2AsO2-2) inner-sphere surface complexes. The surface complexation constants for As(V) binding to SSI is similar to constants found for goethite and ferrihydrite. Simulated adsorption isotherms for intermediate As(V) concentrations also demonstrate that SSI is performing equally well as goethite and ferrihydrite based on surface area normalized adsorption capacities. The binding affinities at micromolar to submicromolar As(V) solution concentrations are similar for SSI and ferrihydrite. SSI has interesting potential as a stable, high-affinity sorbent for use in applications where efficient and fast removal is required.

Ptaquiloside is a natural toxin present in bracken ferns (Pteridium sp.). Cattle ingesting bracken may develop bladder tumours and excrete genotoxins in meat and milk. However, the fate of ptaquiloside in cattle and the link between ptaquiloside and cattle carcinogenesis is unresolved. Here, we present the toxicokinetic profile of ptaquiloside in plasma and urine after intravenous administration of ptaquiloside and after oral administration of bracken. Administered intravenously ptaquiloside, revealed a volume of distribution of 1.3 L kg-1 with a mean residence-time of 4 hours. A large fraction of ptaquiloside was converted to non-toxic pterosin B in the blood stream. Both ptaquiloside and pterosin B were excreted in urine (up to 41% of the dose). Oral administration of ptaquiloside via bracken extract or dried ferns did not result in observations of ptaquiloside in body fluids, indicating deglycosolidation in the rumen. Pterosin B was detected in both plasma and urine after oral administration. Hence, transport of carcinogenic ptaquiloside metabolites over the rumen membrane is indicated. Pterosin B recovered from urine counted for 7% of the dose given intravenously. Heifers exposed to bracken for 7 days (2 mg ptaquiloside kg-1) developed preneoplastic lesions in the urinary bladder most likely caused by genotoxic ptaquiloside metabolites.

In order to overcome the inefficiency of heterogeneous electro-Fenton process for water treatment at neutral pH, single sheet iron oxide (SSI) derived from layered Fe(II)-Fe(III) double hydroxides (green rusts) was fabricated on an indium tin oxide electrode via layer by layer assembly and used in an undivided electrolysis cell. Use of radical scavengers demonstrated the formation of oxygen radicals by electrochemical reduction of oxygen at the SSI electrode, and the key role of hydroxyl radicals (OH) and superoxide anion (O2-) radicals in degradation of the azo dye orange II. Analysis of degradation products by UV-vis, LC-MS and GC-MS further demonstrated that direct reduction toke place in addition to indirect oxidation. The reactivity of SSI as a heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalyst is two order of magnitude higher than its homogenous counterparts. The SSI electrode was highly stable as the dye degradation did not decrease after use for 19 h with no Fe leaching. The high dye removal efficiency was maintained in a wide pH range from 7 to 10 and in different supporting electrolytes, demonstrating the application of this process under various conditions mimicking natural waters.

This paper reports an investigation of the effects of process parameters on the quality characteristics of polymeric parts produced by micro injection moulding (µIM) with two different materials. Four injection moulding process parameters (injection velocity, holding pressure, melt temperature and mould temperature) were investigated using Polypropylene (PP) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). Three key characteristics of the mouldings were evaluated with respect to process settings and the material employed: part mass, flow length and flash formation. The experimentation employs a test part with four micro fingers with different aspect ratios (from 21 up to 150) and was carried out according to the Design of Experiments (DOE) statistical technique. The results show that holding pressure and injection velocity are the most influential parameters on part mass with a direct effect for both materials. Both parameters have a similar effect on flow length for both PP and ABS at all aspect ratios and have higher effects as the feature thickness decreased below 300 µm. The study shows that for the investigated materials the injection speed and packing pressure were the most influential parameters for increasing the amount of flash formation, with relative effects consistent for both materials. Higher melt and mould temperatures settings were less influential parameters for increasing the flash amount when moulding with both materials. Of the two investigated materials, PP was the one exhibiting more flash formation as compared with ABS, when corresponding injection moulding parameters settings for both materials were considered.

Layered FeII-FeIII hydroxide chloride (chloride green rust, GRCl) has high reactivity toward reducible pollutants such as chlorinated solvents. However, this reactive solid is prone to dissolution, and hence loss of reactivity, during storage and handling. In this study, adsorption of silicate (Si) to GRCl was tested for its ability to minimize GRCl dissolution and to inhibit reduction of carbon tetrachloride (CT). Silicate adsorbed with high affinity to GRCl yielding a sorption maximum of 0.026 g of Si/g of GRCl. In the absence of Si, the pseudo-first-order rate constant for CT dehalogenation by GRCl was 2.1 h-1, demonstrating very high reactivity of GRCl but with substantial FeII dissolution up to 2.5 mM. When Si was adsorbed to GRCl, CT dehalogenation was blocked and FeII dissolution extent was reduced by a factor of 28. The addition of glycine (Gly) was tested for reactivation of the Si-blocked GRCl for CT dehalogenation. At 30 mM Gly, partial reactivation of the GRCl was observed with pseudo-first-order rate constant for CT reduction of 0.075 h-1. This blockage and reactivation of GRCl reactivity demonstrates that it is possible to design a switch for GRCl to control its stability and reactivity under anoxic conditions.
