BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis seeks to assess the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab in individuals with advanced or recurrent cervical cancer. METHODS: Databases from PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were all thoroughly searched for pertinent research. Outcomes include complete response (CR), partial response (PR), stable disease (SD), disease progression (PD), overall response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), median progression-free survival (mPFS), median overall survival (mOS), and adverse events (AEs) were retrieved for further analysis. RESULTS: Ten trials with 721 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled results for patients with cervical cancer receiving pembrolizumab were as follows: CR (0.06, 95%CI: 0.02-0.10), PR (0.15, 95%CI: 0.08-0.22), SD (0.16, 95%CI: 0.13-0.20), PD (0.50, 95%CI: 0.25-0.75), ORR (0.26, 95%CI: 0.11-0.41) and DCR (0.42, 95%CI: 0.13-0.71), respectively. Regarding survival analysis, the pooled mPFS and mOS were 3.81 and 10.15 months. Subgroup analysis showed that pembrolizumab in combination was more beneficial in CR (0.16 vs. 0.03, p = 0.012), PR (0.24 vs. 0.08, p = 0.032), SD (0.11 vs. 0.19, p = 0.043), ORR (0.42 vs. 0.11, p = 0.014), and mPFS (5.54 months vs. 2.27 months, p < 0.001) than as single agent. The three most common AEs were diarrhoea (0.25), anaemia (0.25), and nausea (0.21), and the incidence of grade 3-5 AEs was significantly lower, rarely surpassing 0.10. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with advanced or recurrent cervical cancer, this systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that pembrolizumab had a favourable efficacy and tolerability. Future research will primarily focus on optimising customised regiments that optimally integrate pembrolizumab into new therapies and combination strategies. Designed to maximise patient benefit and efficiently control adverse effects while maintaining a high standard of living.


This study demonstrated the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab in individuals with advanced or recurrent cervical cancer. The study found that an upfront combination of chemotherapy and pembrolizumab immunotherapy appears to be a compelling strategy for these patients. More large-scale and multicentre randomised controlled trials will be required in the future to validate the precise benefits of pembrolizumab in new therapies and combination strategies for the treatment of cervical cancer.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Shenlin Baizhu Decoction (SLBZD), which comes from 'Taiping Huimin Heji Ju Fang', belongs to a classical prescription for treating spleen deficiency and dampness obstruction (SQDDS)-type ulcerative colitis (UC) in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the mechanism of SLBZD in treating UC with SQDDS remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to investigate the mechanism of SLBZD against SQDDS-type UC of based on the "gut microbiota and metabolism - bone marrow" axis to induce endogenous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) homing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analysis of SLBZD qualitatively. The efficacy of SLBZD in SQDDS-type UC was evaluated based on the following indicators: the body weight, colon length, disease activity index (DAI) score, Haemotoxylin and Eosin (H&E) pathological sections, and intestinal permeability proteins (occluding and ZO-1). 16S rRNA gene sequencing and non-target metabolomics were performed to identify gut microbiota changes and its metabolites in feces, respectively. BMSCs in each group was collected, cultured, and analyzed. Optimal passaged BMSCs were injected by tail vein into UC rats of SQDDS types. BMSCs homing to the colonic mucosal tissue was observed by immunofluorescent. Finally, the repairing effect of BMSCs homing to the colonic mucosal tissue after SLBZD treatment was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, qRT-PCR, and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: SLBZD effectively improved the colonic length and the body weight, reduced DAI and H&E scores, and increased the expression of the intestinal permeability proteins, including occluding and ZO-1, to treat SQDDS-type UC. After SLBZD treatment, the α-diversity and ß-diversity of the gut microbiota were improved. The differential microbiota was screened as Aeromonadaceae, Lactobacillaceae, and Clostridiaceae at the family level, and Aeromonas, Lactobacillus, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 at the genus level. Meanwhile, the main metabolic pathway was the galactose metabolism pathway. SLBZD treatment timely corrected the aberrant levels of ß-galactose in peripheral blood and bone marrow, senescence-associate-ß-galactosidase in BMSCs, and galactose kinase-2, galactose mutase, and galactosidase beta-1 in peripheral blood to further elevate the expression levels of senescence-associated (SA) proteins (p16, p53, p21, and p27) in BMSCs. The Spearman's correlation analysis demonstrated the relationship between microbiota and metabolism, and the relationship between the galactose metabolism pathway and SA proteins. After BMSCs in each group injection via the tail vein, the pharmacodynamic effects were consistent with those of SLBZD in SQDDS-type UC rats. Furthermore, BMSCs have been homing to colonic mucosal tissue. BMSCs from the SLBZD treatment group had stronger restorative effects on intestinal permeability function due to increasing protein and mRNA expressions of occludin and ZO-1, and decreasing the proteins and mRNA expressions of SDF-1 and CXCR4 in colon. CONCLUSIONS: SLBZD alleviated the damaged structure of gut microbiota and regulated their metabolism, specifically the galactose metabolism, to treat UC of SDDOS types. SLBZD treatment promotes endogenous BMSCs homing to colonic mucosal tissue to repaire the intestinal permeability. The current exploration revealed an underlying mechanism wherein SLBZD activates endogenous BMSCs by targeting 'the gut microbiota and its metabolism-bone marrow' axis and repairs colonic mucosal damage to treat SDDOS-type UC.

BACKGROUND: The midpoint transverse process to pleura (MTP) block, a novel technique for thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB), was first employed in laparoscopic renal cyst decortication. CASE SUMMARY: Thoracic paravertebral nerve block is frequently employed for perioperative analgesia during laparoscopic cyst decortication. To address safety concerns associated with TPVBs, we administered MTP blocks in two patients prior to administering general anesthesia for laparoscopic cyst decortication. The MTP block was performed at the T9 level under ultrasound guidance, with 20 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine injected. Reduced sensation to cold and pinprick was observed from the T8 to T11 dermatome levels. Immediately postoperative Numeric Pain Rating Scale scores were 0/10 at rest and on movement, with none exceeding a mean 24 h numeric rating scale > 3. CONCLUSION: MTP block was effective technique for providing postoperative analgesia for patients undergoing laparoscopic renal cyst decortication.

Copper is one of the common among the heavy metal pollution in Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). So, it is essential to develop rapid and accurate testing method to quantify the Cu2+ content in CHM. Herein, we prepared a coordination-based near-infrared fluorescent probe (NRh6G-FA) by introducing a hemicyanine dye in rhodamine 6G scaffold. NRh6G-FA had a high sensitivity, anti-interference performance, fast response (within 60 s), visualization (from light yellow to green) for Cu2+ and excellent sensing performance for the detection of Cu2+ at low concentrations (LOD = 0.225 µM). The most likely mechanism was verified on the basis of Job's plot, ESI-HRMS and DFT calculations. NRh6G-FA could be successfully applied for the detection and "naked eye" recognition of Cu2+ in CHM samples. Moreover, NRh6G-FA was used to visualize Cu2+ in living MCF-7 cells by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Fungi have different genetic expression abilities and biosynthetic pathways under different cultivation conditions, which can produce various secondary metabolites. The "one strain many compounds" strategy is used to activate silent biosynthetic genes of fungi to produce various compounds, which is an effective method. In order to discover various new compounds in the edible fungus Pholiota nameko, a fermentation strategy involving precursor feeding and enzyme inhibitor addition has been employed. A new illudane sesquiterpene (1), along with one known indole diterpenoid alkaloid, cladosporine A (2) were isolated from the extracts of liquid culture of P. nameko. The new compound was identified by combination of 1D and 2D NMR, MS, optical rotation, and ECD calculations. We conducted experiments on the cytotoxicity of all isolated compounds on three cancer cell lines, but we did not observe any significant cytotoxicity (IC50 > 40 µM).

PURPOSE: N-acetylserotonin (NAS) can reduce retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIRI) by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. Aflibercept is an anti-VEGF drug used to treat a variety of eye diseases. This study was performed to investigate the effect of combination therapy with N-acetylserotonin and aflibercept on RIRI and its mechanism. METHODS: The RIRI model was established by elevating the intraocular pressure. H&E staining was used to observe the pathological changes in the retinal tissue. Cell apoptosis was evaluated by TUNEL. The expression of cleaved caspase-3 in the retina was detected by immunofluorescence and western blotting. The levels of SOD, GSH-Px, and MDA in retinal tissue were measured by ELISA. The protein expression of cytoplasmic Nrf2, nuclear Nrf2, HO-1, Akt, and p-Akt was determined by western blotting. RESULTS: The results showed that combination therapy with NAS and aflibercept significantly alleviated retinal histopathological damage, decreased retinal thickness (from 335.49 ± 30.50 µm to 226.16 ± 17.20 µm, p < 0.001) and the rate of retinal apoptosis (from 28.27 ± 0.39% to 7.87 ± 0.19%, p < 0.001), and downregulated protein expression (from 2.42 ± 0.03 to 1.39 ± 0.03, p < 0.001) and positive expression (from 31.88 ± 0.52 to 25.36 ± 0.58, p < 0.001) of cleaved caspase-3. In addition, combination therapy with NAS and aflibercept also upregulated the levels of SOD (from 20.31 ± 0.18 to 29.66 ± 0.83, p < 0.001) and GSH-Px (from 13.62 ± 0.36 to 19.31 ± 0.82, p < 0.001) and downregulated the level of MDA (from 0.51 ± 0.01 to 0.41 ± 0.01, p < 0.001) to inhibit oxidative stress. Finally, combination therapy with NAS and aflibercept increased the protein expression of cytoplasmic Nrf2 (from 0.10 ± 0.002 to 0.85 ± 0.01, p < 0.001), nuclear Nrf2 (from 0.43 ± 0.01 to 0.88 ± 0.04, p < 0.001), and HO-1 (from 0.45 ± 0.03 to 0.91 ± 0.04, p < 0.001) and the p-Akt/Akt ratio (from 0.45 ± 0.02 to 0.81 ± 0.07, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, combination therapy with NAS and aflibercept attenuated RIRI, and its mechanism may be related to inhibiting apoptosis and oxidative stress and activating the Akt/Nrf2 pathway.

SUMMARY Primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD) is a rare adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH)-independent Cushing's syndrome (CS). Pediatric patients with PPNAD typically have unusual skin lesions and slow growth with unknown causes. We present a case of a female Chinese patient with PPNAD caused by the germline PRKACA gene copy number gain of chromosome 19. The patient initially presented with kidney stones, short stature, and obesity. After further testing, it was discovered that the patient had diabetes, mild hypertension, low bone mass, a low ACTH level, and hypercortisolemia, and neither the low-dose or high-dose dexamethasone suppression test was able to inhibit hematuric cortisol, which paradoxically increased. PPNAD was pathologically diagnosed after unilateral adrenalectomy. Chromosome microarrays and whole exon sequencing analyses of the peripheral blood, as well as testing of sectioned adrenal tissue, showed a rise in the copy number of the duplication-containing PRKACA gene on chromosome 19p13.13p13.12, a de novo but not heritable gene defect that causes disease. The clinical signs and symptoms supported the diagnosis of Carney complex (CNC). One significant mechanism of CNC pathogenesis may be the rise in germline PRKACA copy number of chromosome 19. When assessing PPNAD patients for CNC, the possibility of PRKACA gene amplification should be considered. The effect of PRKACA gene amplification on the clinical manifestations of CNC needs to be confirmed by more cases.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), major components maintaining the immune suppressive microenvironment in lung cancer, are relevant to the invasion, metastasis, and poor prognosis of lung cancer, through the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, remodeling of the immune microenvironment, and regulation of angiogenesis. MDSCs regulate T-cell immune functions by maintaining a strong immunosuppressive microenvironment and promoting tumor invasion. This raises the question of whether reversing the immunosuppressive effect of MDSCs on T cells can improve lung cancer treatment. To understand this further, this review explores the interactions and specific mechanisms of different MDSCs subsets, including regulatory T cells, T helper cells, CD8 + T cells, natural killer T cells, and exhausted T cells, as part of the lung cancer immune microenvironment. Second, it focuses on the guiding significance confirmed via clinical liquid biopsy and tissue biopsy that different MDSC subsets improve the prognosis of lung cancer. Finally, we conclude that targeting MDSCs through action targets or signaling pathways can help regulate T-cell immune functions and suppress T-cell exhaustion. In addition, immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting MDSCs may serve as a new approach for enhancing the efficiency of immunotherapy and targeted therapy for lung cancer in the future, providing better comprehensive options for lung cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the repeatability and diagnostic efficiency of shear wave elastography (SWE) while using coupling gel and gel pads in the diagnosis of superficial breast lesions. METHODS: Two experienced sonographers, trained in SWE, used different methods to perform the maximum Young's modulus (Emax) measurement of the lesion while using coupling gel SWE and gel pad SWE at different time points. All 80 lesions were in the superficial layer of the breast. The interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated to evaluate the intraobserver and interobserver repeatability. Meanwhile, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) was used to calculate the sensitivity, specificity and area under the curve of the two methods. RESULTS: In the 80 breast lesions, the intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility of SWE measurements using coupling gel were considered good, and the ICCs were 0.728 (95% CI: 0.509-0.813) and 0.702 (95% CI: 0.492-0.795), respectively. The intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility of the SWE measured by the gel pad were also considered good, and the ICCs were 0.745 (95% CI: 0.501-0.801) and 0.713 (95% CI: 0.498-0.802), respectively. The sensitivity, specificity and area under the curve were 0.711 and 0.737, 0.929 and 0.905, and 0.873 and 0.878, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In the SWE measurement of superficial breast lesions, the use of a gel pad does not affect the repeatability and diagnostic efficiency of the measurement.


The use of gel pads does not affect repeatability and diagnostic efficiency but also improves the near-field resolution of images.The gel pad has certain advantages in the observation of superficial lesions.

The research and development trend of food packaging is changing from synthetic polymers to eco-friendly materials such as polysaccharides and other hydrocolloids, aiming to solve the problem of pollution from plastic wastes. In this work, a biodegradable food packaging noted KC/PT film was constructed using konjac glucomannan (KGM)/carrageenan (CAR) composite as the matrix and peppermint essential oil (PO)/thymol (THY) with synergistic effect as the reinforcements. The KC/PT film showed great mechanical properties, UV-blocking activity, increased water contact angle and reduced water vapor permeability. Due to the synergistic effect between PO and THY, the KC/PT film showed excellent antioxidant performance and antibacterial behavior against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. The antibacterial mechanism was further illustrated. The prepared KC/PT film, as a unique packaging film, not only successfully extended the shelf life of strawberry to 16 days at 4 °C, but also well expressed its environmental friendliness that it could nearly degrade after 47 days in natural soil conditions. Most importantly, the film exhibited good stability in terms of mechanical properties, antioxidant activity and antibacterial performances after 4 months storage. Therefore, the film the KC/PT film has great potentials in the field of food packaging area.

The brain is often described as an "immune-privileged" organ due to the presence of the blood-brain-barrier (BBB), which limits the entry of immune cells. In general, intracranial injection of adeno-associated virus (AAV) is considered a relatively safe procedure. In this study, we discovered that AAV, a popular engineered viral vector for gene therapy, can disrupt the BBB and induce immune cell infiltration in a titer-dependent manner. First, our bulk RNA sequencing data revealed that injection of high-titer AAV significantly upregulated many genes involved in disrupting BBB integrity and antiviral adaptive immune responses. By using histologic analysis, we further demonstrated that the biological structure of the BBB was severely disrupted in the adult mouse brain. Meanwhile, we noticed abnormal leakage of blood components, including immune cells, within the brain parenchyma of high-titer AAV injected areas. Moreover, we identified that the majority of infiltrated immune cells were cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which resulted in a massive loss of neurons at the site of AAV injection. In addition, antagonizing CTL function by administering antibodies significantly reduced neuronal toxicity induced by high-titer AAV. Collectively, our findings underscore potential severe side effects of intracranial injection of high-titer AAV, which might compromise proper data interpretation if unaware of.

Cyclometalated iridium complexes with mitochondrial targeting show great potential as substitutes for platinum-based complexes because of their strong anti-cancer properties. Three novel cyclometalated iridium(III) compounds were synthesized and evaluated in five different cell lines as part of the ongoing systematic investigations of these compounds. The complexes were prepared using 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline ligands. The cytotoxicity of complexes Ir1-Ir3 towards HeLa cells was shown to be high, with IC50 values of 0.83±0.06, 4.73±0.11, and 4.95±0.62 µM, respectively. Complex Ir1 could be ingested by HeLa cells in 3 h and has shown high selectivity toward mitochondria. Subsequent investigations demonstrated that Ir1 triggered apoptosis in HeLa cells by augmenting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential, and depleting ATP levels. Furthermore, the movement of cells was significantly suppressed and the progression of the cell cycle was arrested in the G0/G1 phase following the administration of Ir1. The Western blot analysis demonstrated that the induction of apoptosis in HeLa cells by Ir1 involves the activation of the mitochondria-dependent channel and the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. No significant cytotoxicity was observed in zebrafish embryos at concentrations less than or equal to 16 µM, e.g., survival rate and developmental abnormalities. In vivo, antitumor assay demonstrated that Ir1 suppressed tumor growth in mice. Therefore, our work shows that complex Ir1 could be a promising candidate for developing novel antitumor drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To study the factors that influence the measurement of median nerve elasticity, to provide a more reproducible test for the assessment of median nerve elasticity using shear wave elasticity (SWE), and to reduce operator empirical dependence. To compare the repeatability of the median nerve elasticity measurement using immersion SWE with that using contact SWE, analyze the factors affecting SWE measurement, and provide a more repeatable method for doctors without SWE operation experience. METHODS: Two doctors without SWE operation experience measured the median nerve mean elastic modulus (Emean) at the same position and at different time points on the right wrist of 58 healthy volunteers using immersion and contact ultrasound methods. The intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of measurements was assessed using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC), while the repeatability was assessed using the Bland-Altman diagram. RESULTS: The intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of the median nerve elasticity measured via contact SWE by inexperienced operators were classified as good, with ICCs of 0.633 (95% CI 0.380-0.783) and 0.552 (95% CI 0.243-0.735), respectively. The intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of the median nerve elasticity measured by immersion SWE were very good, with ICCs of 0.975 (95% CI 0.958-0.985) and 0.942 (95% CI 0.902-0.966), respectively. The intraobserver and interobserver Bland-Altman diagram of median nerve elasticity measured by immersion SWE showed that 98% of the points fell within the 95% limits of agreement. The intraobserver and interobserver Bland-Altman diagram of median nerve elasticity measured by contact SWE showed that 94% of the points fell within the 95% limits of agreement. CONCLUSION: Immersion ultrasound can improve the repeatability of median nerve elasticity measurements by inexperienced operators.

BACKGROUND: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are recommended as the preferred therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer. As a result, aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal symptom (AIMSS) have become a major problem leading to therapy discontinuation and decreased quality of life in patients receiving adjuvant AIs treatment. Multiple therapies have been attempted, but have yielded limited clinical results. This study will be performed to determine whether acupoint thread embedding (ATE) combined with Wenshen Bugu Decoction can effectively treat AIMSS, so as to improve the AIs medication compliance of postmenopausal breast cancer patients. METHODS: This study will utilize a randomized, 2 parallel groups controlled trial design. A total of 128 eligible postmenopausal breast cancer women with AIMSS will be randomized to receive a 12-week treatment with Wenshen Bugu Decoction alone (control group) or in combination with ATE (treatment group) in a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome will be the 12 week Brief Pain Inventory Worst Pain (BPI-WP) score. The secondary outcome measures will include response rate, Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BFI-SF), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Endocrine Symptom (FACT-ES), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B), bone marrow density (BMD), blood markers of bone metabolite, Morisky medication adherence scale-8 (MMAS-8), credibility and expectancy, and survival outcomes. DISCUSSION: This trial may provide clinical evidence that ATE combined with Wenshen Bugu Decoction can be beneficial for treating AIMSS among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. Our findings will be helpful to enhance the quality of life and reduce the occurrence of AIs withdrawal.

This study investigates the interaction between long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and metabolic risk factors that contribute to coronary artery disease (CAD). A total transcriptome high throughput sequencing study was conducted on peripheral blood mononuclear cells from five patients with CAD and five healthy controls. Validation assay by qRT-PCR was conducted among 270 patients and 47 controls. Finally, to evaluate the lncRNAs' diagnostic value for CAD, the Spearman correlation test and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis were utilized. Additionally, univariate and multivariate logistic regression along with crossover analyses were conducted to identify the interaction between lncRNA and environmental risk factors. A total of 2149 of 26,027 lncRNAs identified by RNA sequencing were differentially expressed in CAD patients compared to controls. Validation by qRT-PCR showed significantly different relative expression levels for lncRNAs PDXDC1-AS1, SFI1-AS1, RP13-143G15.3, DAPK1-IT1, PPIE-AS1, and RP11-362A1.1 between the two groups (all P<0.05). The area under the ROC values of PDXDC1-AS1 and SFI1-AS1 is 0.645 (sensitivity=0.443 and specificity=0.920) and 0.629 (sensitivity=0.571 and specificity=0.909), especially. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that lncRNAs PDXDC1-AS1 (OR=2.285, 95%CI=1.390-3.754, p=0.001) and SFI1-AS1 (OR=1.163, 95%CI=1.163-2.264, p=0.004) were protective factors against CAD. Under the additive model, cross-over analyses demonstrated significant interactions between lncRNAs PDXDC1-AS1 and smoking in relation to CAD risk (S=3.871, 95%CI=1.140-6.599). PDXDC1-AS1 and SFI1-AS1 were sensitive and specific biomarkers for CAD and exhibited synergistic effects with certain environmental factors. These results highlighted their potential use as CAD diagnostic biomarkers for future research.

The Nymphalidae family of cosmopolitan butterflies (Lepidoptera) comprises approximately 7200 species found on all continents and in all habitats. However, debate persists regarding the phylogenetic relationships within this family. In this study, we assembled and annotated eight mitogenomes of Nymphalidae, constituting the first report of complete mitogenomes for this family. Comparative analysis of 105 mitochondrial genomes revealed that the gene compositions and orders were identical to the ancestral insect mitogenome, except for Callerebia polyphemus trnV being before trnL and Limenitis homeyeri having two trnL genes. The results regarding length variation, AT bias, and codon usage were consistent with previous reports on butterfly mitogenomes. Our analysis indicated that the subfamilies Limenitinae, Nymphalinae, Apaturinae, Satyrinae, Charaxinae, Heliconiinae, and Danainae are monophyletic, while the subfamily the subfamily Cyrestinae is polyphyletic. Danainae is the base of the phylogenetic tree. At the tribe level, Euthaliini in Limenitinae; Melitaeini and Kallimini in Nymphalinae; Pseudergolini in Cyrestinae; Mycalesini, Coenonymphini, Ypthimini, Satyrini, and Melanitini in Satyrinae; and Charaxini in Charaxinae are regarded as monophyletic groups. However, the tribe Lethini in Satyrinae is paraphyletic, while the tribes Limenitini and Neptini in Limenitinae, Nymphalini and Hypolimni in Nymphalinae, and Danaini and Euploeini in Danainae are polyphyletic. This study is the first to report the gene features and phylogenetic relationships of the Nymphalidae family based on mitogenome analysis, providing a foundation for future studies of population genetics and phylogenetic relationships within this family.

Sarcopaenia is an age-related disease affected by many factors, nutrition being one. Reduced protein intake and decreased diet quality are correlated with sarcopaenia. Protein, amino acid, or peptide supplementation is a commonly used clinical practice to increase protein intake. However, whether supplementation plays a key role in preventing and treating sarcopaenia and whether it needs to be combined with other interventions is worthy of study. This review focuses on protein, amino acid, and peptide supplementation for the prevention and treatment of sarcopaenia.

Cockroaches, an ancient and diverse group of insects on earth that originated in the Carboniferous, displays a wide array of morphology or biology diversity. The spermatheca is an organ of the insect reproductive system; the diversity of spermathecae might be the adaption to different mating and sperm storage strategies. Yet a consensus about the phylogenetic relationships among the main lineages of Blattodea and the evolution of spermatheca has not been reached until now. Here we added the transcriptome data of Anaplectidae for the first time and supplemented other family level groups (such as Blaberidae, Corydiidae) to address the pending issues. Our results showed that Blattoidea was recovered as sister to Corydioidea, which was strongly supported by molecular evidence. In Blattoidea, (Lamproblattidae + Anaplectidae) + (Cryptocercidae + Termitoidae) was strongly supported by our molecular data. In Blaberoidea, Pseudophyllodromiidae and Blaberidae were recovered to be monophyletic, while Blattellidae was found to be paraphyletic with respect to Malaccina. Ectobius sylvestris + Malaccina discoidalis formed the sister group to other Blaberoidea; Blattellidae (except Malaccina discoidalis) + Nyctiboridae was found as the sister of Blaberidae. Corydiidae was recovered to be non-monophyletic due to the embedding of Nocticola sp. Our ASR analysis of spermatheca suggested that primary spermathecae were present in the common ancestor, and it transformed at least six times during the evolutionary history of Blattodea. The evolution of spermatheca could be described as a unidirectional trend: the increased size to accommodate more sperm. Furthermore, major splits within the existing genera of cockroaches occurred in the Upper Paleogene to Neogene. Our study provides strong support for the relationship among three superfamilies and offers some new insights into the phylogeny of cockroaches. Meanwhile, this study also provides basic knowledge on the evolution of spermathecae and reproductive patterns.
