RESUMO

Demodex folliculorum (Simon, 1842) has been associated with various dermatological conditions. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Demodex infestation in medical students with facial dermatoses compared with healthy medical students serving as controls. A total of 250 participants were enrolled, including 150 individuals with facial dermatoses and 100 healthy controls. Sampling was performed based on the standardized skin surface biopsy method. Demographic characteristics, specifically gender and age, were not statistically different between the patient and control groups. Among the facial dermatosis patients, 25 out of 150 (16.6%) were found to have Demodex infestation, while only three out of the 100 healthy controls (3%) exhibited infestations. The only identified species was D. folliculorum. The rates of Demodex infestation were significantly higher in the patients compared to the control groups. These findings indicate a higher prevalence of Demodex infestation among medical students with facial dermatosis, particularly in those diagnosed with folliculitis, acne vulgaris, and inflammatory papule, when compared to healthy controls. A better understanding of the relationship between D. folliculorum infestation and these dermatological conditions may lead to improved diagnostic and treatment strategies in the future.

BACKGROUND: The higher prevalence of hookah tobacco smoking (HTS) has become worrisome in women. Thus, it is essential to identify and measure the perceptions associated with this unhealthy behavior as well as the type of response to risk messages to design the effective programs. This study aimed to psychometric evaluation of a new instrument, named the Extended Parallel Process Model-Hookah Tobacco Smoking Questionnaire (EPPM-HTSQ), for female university students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This methodological study was conducted in 2019-2020 in central and western Iran. The first version of the instrument was developed with 97 items. Face, Content, and construct validity methods were used to assess the EPPM-HTSQ validity. The data viability for factorability was guided through Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sample adequacy (Values >0.7) and Bartlett's test of Sphericity (P < 0.05). The Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) method with varimax rotation and SPSS software was performed to identify the main factors of the questionnaire and interpretable factors. The internal consistency and external reliability were determined. The test-retest was used for evaluating the stability of tools. RESULTS: During the assessment of the face and content validity 71 items remained in the questionnaire. EFA led to the extraction of nine dimensions: "Focusing on superior rewards," "Response Efficacy," "Perceived physical threat," "Perceived social threat," "Self-efficacy," "Fear control," "Attitude," "Fear," and "Intention" Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test (0.957) and Bartlett's test (P < 0.001). Cronbach's alpha (0.871-0.951) and ICC (0.985-0.998) were approved for scale dimensions. CONCLUSION: Important findings of the present study were the development and validation of the EPPM-HTSQ for measuring EPPM variables in relation to HTS; introducing a new variable "focusing on superior rewards"; as well as, the new classification of the concept of "perceived threat." The final version of the EPPM-HTSQ is a valid and reliable tool, but it is suggested to be re-evaluated in other studies with different populations and sample sizes.

Purpose: To compare the effects of cyclosporine 0.05% and artificial tears on dry eye disease following cataract surgery. Methods: This prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial enroled 60 eyes of 60 eligible cataract patients who completed the study. Patients were randomized to receive either cyclosporine 0.05% or artificial tear four times daily for 1 month following cataract surgery. Clinical assessments included refraction, corrected distance visual acuity, tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer's test, and the visual analogue scale (VAS). An independent sample t-test was used to compare the means of the variables between the two groups. Results: Mean patient age was 64.15±9.17 (range, 45-90), of which 53% (n=32) were female. There was no significant difference in mean age (P=0.308) between the two groups. One month postoperatively, the cyclosporine 0.05% group had a significantly higher TBUT value (P=0.004). Schirmer's result (P=0.095) and the VAS questionnaire scores (P=0.374) did not show a statistically significant difference between the two groups. There was no significant difference in the visual outcomes (P>0.05). Conclusion: Cyclosporine 0.05% was superior to artificial tears in improving tear stability after cataract surgery in the management of immediate postoperative dry eye. It may provide a more effective therapeutic option for the management of dry eye symptoms in the clinical setting.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the tear level of VEGF and the quantity of tear film in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS: Thirty patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR group) and 30 patients with no DR (NDR group), and 30 healthy subjects with age and gender matching were enrolled in this prospective comparative study. The tear samples were collected using the Schirmer strips, and the amount of moisture absorbed by the strips was used to determine the quantitative level of the tear film. The concentration of VEGF in the tear samples was measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The variables were compared with an independent t-test and covariance analysis. RESULTS: Mean tear level of VEGF was significantly higher in DR group (235.42 pg/ml) compared to NDR (75.11 pg/ml) and control (58.77 pg/ml) groups (P ≤ 0.001). There was no significant difference in the mean of VEGF between NDR and control patients (P = 1.00). Mean quantitative tear film levels were 7.15%, 9.72%, and 15.11% in DR, NDR, and healthy subjects, respectively (P < 0.05). The pairwise analysis showed significant differences in the level of VEGF between DR and both NDR (P = 0.001) and normal (P = 0.017) groups. However, there was no significant difference observed between NDR and normal eyes (P = 0.743). CONCLUSION: The VEGF level in tear was higher in diabetic patients with DR, independent of tear volume. The tear VEGF measurement can be used as a valuable predictor to prevent DR in diabetic patients.

Variants of uncertain significance (VUSs) in BRCA2 are a common result of hereditary cancer genetic testing. While more than 4,000 unique VUSs, comprised of missense or intronic variants, have been identified in BRCA2, the few missense variants now classified clinically as pathogenic or likely pathogenic are predominantly located in the region encoding the C-terminal DNA binding domain (DBD). We report on functional evaluation of the influence of 462 BRCA2 missense variants affecting the DBD on DNA repair activity of BRCA2 using a homology-directed DNA double-strand break repair assay. Of these, 137 were functionally abnormal, 313 were functionally normal, and 12 demonstrated intermediate function. Comparisons with other functional studies of BRCA2 missense variants yielded strong correlations. Sequence-based in silico prediction models had high sensitivity, but limited specificity, relative to the homology-directed repair assay. Combining the functional results with clinical and genetic data in an American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG)/Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP)-like variant classification framework from a clinical testing laboratory, after excluding known splicing variants and functionally intermediate variants, classified 431 of 442 (97.5%) missense variants (129 as pathogenic/likely pathogenic and 302 as benign/likely benign). Functionally abnormal variants classified as pathogenic by ACMG/AMP rules were associated with a slightly lower risk of breast cancer (odds ratio [OR] 5.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.43-7.83) than BRCA2 DBD protein truncating variants (OR 8.56, 95% CI 6.03-12.36). Overall, functional studies of BRCA2 variants using validated assays substantially improved the variant classification yield from ACMG/AMP models and are expected to improve clinical management of many individuals found to harbor germline BRCA2 missense VUS.

One type of epigenetic modification is genomic DNA methylation, which is induced by smoking, and both are associated with male infertility. In this study, the relationship between smoking and CHD5 gene methylation and semen parameters in infertile men was determined. After the MS-PCR of blood in 224 samples, 103 infertile patients (62 smokers and 41 non-smokers) and 121 fertile men, methylation level changes between groups and the effect of methylation and smoking on infertility and semen parameters in infertile men were determined. The results showed that there is a significant difference in the methylation status (MM, MU, UU) of the CHD5 gene between the patient and the control group, and this correlation also exists for the semen parameters (p < .001). The average semen parameters in smokers decreased significantly compared to non-smokers and sperm concentration was (32.21 ± 5.27 vs. 55.27 ± 3.38), respectively. MM methylation status was higher in smokers (22.5%) compared to non-smokers (14.6%). Smoking components affect the methylation pattern of CHD5 gene, and smokers had higher methylation levels and lower semen parameters than non-smokers, which can be biomarkers for evaluating semen quality and infertility risk factors. Understanding the epigenetic effects of smoking on male infertility can be very useful for predicting negative consequences of smoking and providing therapeutic solutions.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is a common cancer developed in a carcinogenesis process from precancerous lesions including chronic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia. Survivin, an inhibitor-of-apoptosis protein, is associated with the initiation and progression of gastric cancer. The present study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression patterns of survivin and its relationship with early diagnosis of gastric cancer in Iranian patients. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, immunoexpression of survivin was investigated on sections obtained from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 38 chronic gastritis, 32 intestinal metaplasia, 20 dysplasia, 28 gastric adenocarcinoma, and 22 controls. RESULTS: Survivin immunoexpression in chronic gastritis was higher than controls, but this difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). However, survivin immunoexpression had a steady significant increase from control and chronic gastritis to intestinal metaplasia to dysplasia to gastric adenocarcinoma (P < 0.05). Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve of survivin immunohistochemical test for the diagnosis of gastric cancer were 87.5%, 74.4%, and 0.85, respectively. Males had a significantly higher survivin expression than females (P < 0.001). Also, survivin expression was significantly higher in older patients than in younger ones (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: It seems that the steady increase in survivin expression from different precancerous lesions to gastric adenocarcinoma suggests that survivin can be used as a potential biomarker for the prevention and early diagnosis of gastric cancer.

Echinococcus granulosus is a parasitic tapeworm that causes cystic echinococcosis, a potentially life-threatening zoonotic infection affecting humans and animals across the globe. In Iran, the prevalence of this parasite remains a significant public health concern, particularly in the northwest region. This study aimed to investigate the genotypes of E. granulosus isolated from canines in the northwest of Iran. A total of 87 samples were collected from the Mughan plain area in Ardabil province, including 47 stray dogs (Canis familiaris), 25 golden jackals (Canis aureus), and 15 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), and molecular analysis was performed for partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and nad1 genes. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out on the obtained sequence. The findings revealed that 9 out of 87 (10.3%) samples were infected with Echinococcus parasites, with a frequency of 1 (4%) and 8 (17%) among golden jackals and stray dogs, respectively. Overall, all (100%) E. granulosus adult samples were related to the G1 genotypes. This study provides comprehensive data regarding the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of echinococcosis in canines in northwest Iran.

Tissue factor (TF) is an integral transmembrane protein associated with the extrinsic coagulation pathway. TF gene expression is regulated in response to inflammatory cytokines, bacterial lipopolysaccharides, and mechanical injuries. TF activity may be affected by phosphorylation of its cytoplasmic domain and alternative splicing. TF acts as the primary initiator of physiological hemostasis, which prevents local bleeding at the injury site. However, aberrant expression of TF, accompanied by the severity of diseases and infections under various pathological conditions, triggers multiple signaling pathways that support thrombosis, angiogenesis, inflammation, and metastasis. Protease-activated receptors (PARs) are central in the downstream signaling pathways of TF. In this study, we have reviewed the TF signaling pathways in different pathological conditions, such as wound injury, asthma, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), viral infections, cancer and pathological angiogenesis. Angiogenic activities of TF are critical in the repair of wound injuries and aggressive behavior of tumors, which are mainly performed by the actions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF1-α). Pro-inflammatory effects of TF have been reported in asthma, CVDs and viral infections, including COVID-19, which result in tissue hypertrophy, inflammation, and thrombosis. TF-FVII induces angiogenesis via clotting-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Clottingdependent angiogenesis is induced via the generation of thrombin and cross-linked fibrin network, which facilitate vessel infiltration and also act as a reservoir for endothelial cells (ECs) growth factors. Expression of TF in tumor cells and ECs triggers clotting-independent angiogenesis through induction of VEGF, urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPAR), early growth response 1 (EGR1), IL8, and cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 (Cyr61).

Background: Recently, the prevalence of thyroid cancer has increased. Although there are known risk factors for thyroid cancer, none of them can justify this recent increase. In addition to the known risk factors, other risk factors have been proposed. Leptin can be considered as one of these risk factors due to the recent increase in the prevalence of obesity in the population. Leptin is a common factor in obesity and thyroid cancer. Leptin exerts anti-apoptotic and mitogenic effects on cancer cells and also acts as an angiogenic factor. This study aimed to evaluate the serum leptin level in individuals who suffer from papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), cases with benign thyroid nodules (BTN), and a healthy group. Materials and Methods: In this study, newly diagnosed patients with PTC, BTNs, as well as euthyroid healthy control subjects without nodules were included. In all these participants, various clinical and laboratory parameters including thyroid function tests and serum leptin levels were measured and compared between the three study groups. For patients with PTC, leptin was assessed 12 weeks after total thyroidectomy. Results: Ninety-one cases with PTC, 90 cases with BTNs, and 88 controls were recruited. Serum leptin levels in the PTC group, benign group, and the control group were 22.34, 17.60, and 13.83 ng/ml, respectively, which was considerably higher in PTC cases compared to those with benign nodules and control group (P<0.001). There was a significant association between leptin with BMI, tumor size, and tumor stage in PTC patients. Also, in patients with BTNs, a correlation between BMI, tumor size, and leptin was observed. Conclusion: Serum leptin levels were considerably higher in cases with PTC than those with BTNs and controls and can be considered as a potential tumor marker for papillary thyroid cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Addressing both the initial treatment response and subsequent paclitaxel resistance is a pivotal concern. Nano drug delivery, an emerging approach, presents a cutting-edge alternative to conventional chemotherapy. METHODS: This investigation synthesized PEGylated nanoparticles (NPs) via the Reverse Phase Evaporation technique for liposomal NPs. Characteristics such as zeta potential, size, drug release and polydispersity index (PDI) were subjected to evaluation. Subsequently, cytotoxicity assays were conducted on gastric cancer cells (AGS) following 24 and 48-hour incubation periods. RESULTS: In this study, the liposomal NPs had a zeta potential of -22 mV and a particle size of 285 nm. The Entrapment efficiency was determined as 41% that occurred physically. Additionally, the liposomal NPs demonstrated a high drug retention rate (39% remained after 72 hours), and they exhibited significantly increased cytotoxicity compared to the free drug, confirming their effectiveness as a suitable carrier for paclitaxel during both incubation periods (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings collectively advocate the potential of liposomal NPs as promising contenders for effective nano-drug application in propelling chemotherapy forward.

Triclosan (TCS) has been increased in the water during the COVID-19 pandemic because it cannot remove by conventional water treatment. In addition, it can accumulate in the human body over time through long-term exposure. Therefore, the occurrence of TCS in the water treatment plant (WTP) and tap water, and its human health risk assessment through tap water ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation routes in Isfahan, Iran, were investigated. Moreover, spatial regression methods were used for the prediction of water quality parameters, TCS concentration, and total hazard quotient (HQ). The average TCS concentration in the influent and effluent of WTP and tap water was 1.6, 1.4, and 0.4 µg/L, respectively. Conventional WTP has low efficiency in the removal of TCS (12.6%) from water. The average values of total HQ for males were 7.79×10-5, 4.97×10-4, and 4.97×10-5 and for females were 3.31×10-5, 2.11×10-4, and 2.11×10-5 based on RfDEPA, RfDMDH, and RfDRodricks, respectively that were in the low-risk levels (HQ<1). Furthermore, TCS concentration in tap water and the ingestion rate of drinking water had the highest effect on the risk of TCS exposure from tap water. The non-carcinogenic health risk of TCS in water was low. The results of this study may be useful for promoting WTP processes to remove emerging pollutants.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common form of liver disease. Curcumin is a natural polyphenol that may be effective against liver steatosis and steatohepatitis. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of phytosomal curcumin on lipid profile, fasting blood sugar, anthropometric indices, liver enzymes, fibrosis, and steatosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver patients. Methods: The participants were randomized to the curcumin-phosphatidylserine phytosomal receiving group and the placebo receiving group and were followed up for 12 weeks. Data on anthropometric indices, lipid profile, blood glucose, blood pressure, liver enzymes, hepatic steatosis, and fibrosis were collected at the beginning and the end of the clinical trial. Results: Supplementation for 12 weeks with phytosomal curcumin significantly reduced fibrosis and steatosis in the phytosomal curcumin receiving group compared with the placebo group (p < 0.05). Phytosomal curcumin also significantly reduced waist circumference and blood pressure compared with the placebo group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the phytosomal curcumin and the placebo groups regarding changes in weight, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, liver enzymes, and lipid profile. Conclusion: Curcumin, at a dose of 250 mg per day, might be effective in treating patients with NAFLD. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous disease that complicates predicting patients' prognosis and their response to treatment. CRC prognosis is influenced by the tumor microenvironment (TME). The immune system is a critical component of the TME. Programmed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1) and T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (Tim3) are inhibitory immune checkpoints that regulate immune response and may provide prognostic power. However, the effect of their expressions and co-expressions on the CRC prognosis remains unclear. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of the CD8, CD3, PD-1, Tim3 expression, and PD-1/Tim3 co-expression in patients with CRC. Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty six patients with CRC who underwent curative surgery were enrolled in the study. Immunohistochemical staining was performed for PD-1, Tim3, CD8, and CD3, and the expression of each marker was evaluated in the center of the tumor (CT), invasive margin (IM), and adjacent normal-like tissue. Result: Our results indicated that high expression of PD-1 in IM was significantly associated with lower TNM stage, T-stage, M-stage, lack of metastasis, the presence of tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS), lack of recurrence (in the left-sided tumors), and larger tumor size (in right-sided tumors) (P<0.05). High expression of PD-1 in IM was also associated with improved overall survival (OS) in a subgroup of patients with high CD8 expression. High Tim3 expression in CT was associated with higher M-stage (M1) (in left-sided CRCs) (P<0.05). It was also associated with decreased OS in total cohort and left-sided CRCs and represented an independent prognostic factor for CRC patients in multivariate analysis. PD-1 and Tim3 co-expression had no synergistic effects on predicting OS. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of immune system-related markers such as CD8, PD-1, and Tim3 depends on the primary tumor sides. We also showed that Tim3 could act as a prognostic factor and therapeutic target in CRC. This marker is probably a more preferred target for immunotherapy than PD-1, especially in left-sided CRCs.

Background: As a modifiable risk factor, nutrition plays a pivotal role in the prevention or delay of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This study was aimed to investigate and compare the dominant dietary patterns in the patients with and without OSCC. Materials and Methods: This case-control study evaluated the usual dietary intake of 80 cases and 120 controls during 2019-2020 using the 117-item Food Frequency Questionnaire, with confirmed validity and reliability. Factor analysis was used to detect the dominant dietary patterns. Data analysis was done by SPSS (version 21) using the Chi-square test, ANOVA, logistic regression analysis, and independent t-test (P < 0.05). Results: Three dietary patterns were identified, including the western dietary pattern, health dietary pattern, and traditional dietary pattern. The odds ratio (OR) = 1.181 and confidence interval (CI) = 0.671 and 2.082 were found for the western dietary pattern, OR = 1.087 and CI = 0.617 and 1.914 were detected for the healthy dietary pattern, and OR = 0.846 and CI = 0.480 and 1.491 were reported for the traditional dietary pattern. No significant difference was found between the study groups in the dietary pattern and the risk of disease. This relationship remained insignificant after adjustment for the energy intake and confounding factors. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between adherence to healthy, traditional, and western dietary patterns and OSCC. Consumption of vegetables and nuts had a protective role against the disease, but risky behaviors such as smoking and alcohol use were directly associated with the incidence of the disease.

BACKGROUND: It is well-documented that the interplay between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumor cells is a major determining factor in cancer progression. CD45RO seems to be a reliable indicator for predicting prognosis and disease outcome, along with CD3 and CD8 markers. LAG-3 is another important marker that overexpresses on TILs in a variety of cancers and is associated with disease prognosis; however, its prognostic impact is controversial. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the presence of CD45RO + , LAG3 + , CD3 + , and CD8 + lymphocytes in CRC tumor tissues and their association with clinicopathological parameters of the disease as well as patients' survival, according to primary tumor locations. METHODS: Expression of CD45RO, LAG3, CD3, and CD8 was immunohistochemically assessed in tissue sections of 136 patients with CRC. The percentages of TILs expressing these markers were then separately determined in both invasive margin (IM) and center of tumor (CT). Their associations with clinicopathological factors and patients' survival were analyzed in the entire cohort and the subgroups of patients with right- and left- rectum tumors. RESULTS: Based on our observation, CD45RO + and CD3 + cells were the most frequent infiltrated lymphocytes in both CT and IM regions of colon tumor tissue. Whilst, LAG3 + lymphocytes were the least frequent subset in both areas. Statistical analysis indicated that the frequency of CD45RO + TILs was positively associated with advanced TNM stages (III/IV), in the entire cohort and right-sided tumors (P < 0.05). LAG3 + TILs in IM were also increased in tumor tissues with higher T-stages in the entire cohort (P = 0.027). In univariate analysis, high score of CD45RO + TILs in IM was associated with better overall survival in the entire cohort. High score of CD8 + and CD45RO + lymphocytes in IM were also associated with improved survival in patients with right-sided tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings generally suggest that the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of immune system-related markers such as CD45RO and LAG3 depends on the primary tumor sides. Our results collectively demonstrated that infiltration of CD45RO + lymphocytes in IM could be an independent prognostic factor in a site-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: Chromodomain-helicase 5 (CHD5) is a conventional tumor-suppressing gene in many tumors. The CHD5 gene, as a key factor in the chromatin density process during sperm maturation, can affect the risk of infertility. This study aimed to determine whether CHD5 variants contribute to the risk of male infertility. METHODS: Gene variants were identified using tetra primer-ARMS-PCR method on nonobstructive azoospermia and severe oligozoospermia in a case-control study. SPSS software 20 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, USA) was used for data recording and statistical analysis. RESULTS: In the codominant pattern, the rs12067480 TT variant versus CC significantly increased the risk of disease, and also, in the recessive pattern, TT variant versus CC + CT and T allele versus C. The rs2273032 variant was associated with the risk of infertility in codominant pattern AA versus GG and recessive pattern AA versus GG + GA and allele. We discovered that the rs12067480 T and rs2273032 A alleles increase the risk of male infertility. Also, the interaction of the CT/GA, CT/AA, TT/GA genotypes and rs12067480T/rs2273032A and rs12067480T/rs2273032G haplotypes significantly increased the risk of infertility. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the CHD5 gene polymorphisms contribute to the risk of male infertility. Our findings can be valuable in improving the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer which its precise etiology remains unknown. However, environmental and genetic factors contribute to the etiology of PTC. Axis inhibition protein 1 (Axin1) is a scaffold protein that exerts its role as a tumor suppressor. In addition, Cathepsin B (Ctsb) is a cysteine protease with higher expression in several types of tumors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible association of AXIN1 rs12921862 C/A and rs1805105 G/A and CTSB rs12898 G/A polymorphisms with PTC susceptibility. MATERIALS & METHODS: In total, 156 PTC patients and 158 sex-, age-, and BMI-matched control subjects were enrolled in the study. AXIN1 rs12921862 C/A and rs1805105 G/A and CTSB rs12898 G/A polymorphisms were genotyped using the PCR-RFLP method. RESULTS: There was a relationship between AXIN1 rs12921862 C/A polymorphism and an increased risk of PTC in all genetic models except the overdominant model. The AXIN1 rs1805105 G/A polymorphism was associated with an increased PTC risk only in codominant and overdominant models. The frequency of AXIN1 Ars12921862 Ars1805105 haplotype was higher in the PTC group and also this haplotype was associated with an increased risk of PTC. Moreover, the AXIN1 rs12921862 C/A polymorphism was not associated with PTC clinical and pathological findings, but AXIN1 rs1805105 G/A polymorphism was associated with almost three folds of larger tumor size (≥1 cm). There was no association between CTSB rs12898 G/A polymorphism and PTC and its findings. CONCLUSION: The AXIN1 rs12921862 C/A and rs1805105 G/A polymorphisms were associated with PTC. AXIN1 rs1805105 G/A polymorphism was associated with higher tumor size.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which has a high death rate, is hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This study aimed to examine immunoexpression of CB1 receptors in the livers of patients with HBV-related HCC in comparison with HCC and chronic HBV as well as healthy people. Patients and methods Participants in this case-controlled study were patients with only HBV (HBV; 40), only HCC (HCC; 41), and HBV-related HCC (HBV + HCC; 40) and a healthy control group (C; 30). Tissue expression of CB1 at the protein level was studied using immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: All groups were significantly different in terms of expression of CB1 protein (P < 0.001). The expression levels of CB1 in the liver tissue of the HBV and C groups were not significantly different (P = 0.072). The expression levels of CB1 in the liver tissue of the HBV-related HCC and HCC groups had a statistically significant increase compared to the C and HBV groups (P < 0.001). Also, the CB1 expression levels in the liver tissues of HBV-related HCC and HCC groups were significantly different (P = 0.008). The sensitivity and specificity of immunohistochemistry tests in the diagnosis of HCC using CB1 were 63.4 and 91.2, respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were 90.0 % and 65.1 %, respectively. There was no relationship between the expression of CB1and other clinicopathological variables (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The present findings revealed a tumor promoting function of the CB1 receptor in HCC. CB1 is also a pathological valuable factor for identifying the pathway of inflammation during infection.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that even at very low levels can cause cancer by increasing the activity of tumor cells and suppressing the immune system. There is also little information on OCPs and survival after diagnosis. The aim of this study was to monitor the concentration of OCPs in the blood serum of cancer patients and its relationship with their socio-demographic characteristics and ultimately that impact on survival time and hazard ratio (HR). This cross-sectional study included 89 diagnosed patients with cancer in Isfahan, Iran. 12 types of OCPs were measured in serum by gas chromatography (7GC) with an electron capture detector and equipped with mass spectrometer (MS). Also, participants' questionnaire was completed to collect information. T-test, ANOVA, and Chi-square tests were used to evaluate the association between serum levels of OCPs and quantitative and qualitative information of patients. Survival analysis was also examined based on Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test, and Cox model. The mean of total OCPs in patients' serum was calculated to be 1.82 ± 1.36 µg/L. Concentration of 2,4' DDE had a significant relationship with body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) (P < 0.05). In addition, gender revealed a significant correlation in estimating survival time (P < 0.05). Non-exposure to OCPs showed a positive effect on increasing the life expectancy of patients. Lindane and endosulfan increased the risk of death by 16% and 37%, respectively, with insignificant P value (P > 0.05). The findings of the present study showed adverse effects of OCPs on patients' survival time and increased mortality of HR. Moreover, as the first research conducted in the study area, it is suggested management of environmental, individual and social factors that could be influenced the biological accumulation of OCPs in humans and cause health promotion.
