RESUMO

The precise assessment of vascular heterogeneity in brain tumors is vital for diagnosing, grading, predicting progression, and guiding treatment decisions. However, currently, there is a significant shortage of high-resolution imaging approaches. Herein, we propose a contrast-enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (CE-SWI) utilizing the minimalist dextran-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Dextran@Fe3O4 NPs) for ultrahigh-resolution mapping of vasculature in brain tumors. The Dextran@Fe3O4 NPs are prepared via a facile coprecipitation method under room temperature, and exhibit small hydrodynamic size (28 nm), good solubility, excellent biocompatibility, and high transverse relaxivity (r2*, 159.7 mM-1 s-1) under 9.4 T magnetic field. The Dextran@Fe3O4 NPs-enhanced SWI can increase the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of cerebral vessels to 2.5 times that before injection and achieves ultrahigh-spatial-resolution visualization of microvessels as small as 0.1 mm in diameter. This advanced imaging capability not only allows for the detailed mapping of both enlarged peritumoral drainage vessels and the intratumoral microvessels, but also facilitates the sensitive imaging detection of vascular permeability deterioration in a C6 cells-bearing rat glioblastoma model. Our proposed Dextran@Fe3O4 NPs-enhanced SWI provides a powerful imaging technique with great clinical translation potential for the precise theranostics of brain tumors.

The precise mapping of collateral circulation and ischemic penumbra is crucial for diagnosing and treating acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Unfortunately, there exists a significant shortage of high-sensitivity and high-resolution in vivo imaging techniques to fulfill this requirement. Herein, a contrast enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (CE-SWI) using the minimalist dextran-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Dextran NPs) are introduced for the highly sensitive and high-resolution AIS depiction under 9.4 T for the first time. The Fe3O4@Dextran NPs are synthesized via a simple one-pot coprecipitation method using commercial reagents under room temperature. It shows merits of small size (hydrodynamic size 25.8 nm), good solubility, high transverse relaxivity (r2) of 51.3 mM-1s-1 at 9.4 T, and superior biocompatibility. The Fe3O4@Dextran NPs-enhanced SWI can highlight the cerebral vessels readily with significantly improved contrast and ultrahigh resolution of 0.1 mm under 9.4 T MR scanner, enabling the clear spatial identification of collateral circulation in the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat model. Furthermore, Fe3O4@Dextran NPs-enhanced SWI facilitates the precise depiction of ischemia core, collaterals, and ischemic penumbra post AIS through matching analysis with other multimodal MR sequences. The proposed Fe3O4@Dextran NPs-enhanced SWI offers a high-sensitivity and high-resolution imaging tool for individualized characterization and personally precise theranostics of stroke patients.

Anastomotic leaks are among the most dreaded complications following gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, and contrast-enhanced X-ray gastroenterography is considered the preferred initial diagnostic method for GI leaks. However, from fundamental research to clinical practice, the only oral iodinated contrast agents currently available for GI leaks detection are facing several challenges, including low sensitivity, iodine allergy, and contraindications in patients with thyroid diseases. Herein, we propose a cinematic contrast-enhanced X-ray gastroenterography for the real-time detection of GI leaks with an iodine-free bismuth chelate (Bi-DTPA) for the first time. The Bi-DTPA, synthesized through a straightforward one-pot method, offers distinct advantages such as no need for purification, a nearly 100 % yield, large-scale production capability, and good biocompatibility. The remarkable X-ray attenuation properties of Bi-DTPA enable real-time dynamic visualization of whole GI tract under both X-ray gastroenterography and computed tomography (CT) imaging. More importantly, the leaky site and severity can be both clearly displayed during Bi-DTPA-enhanced gastroenterography in a rat model with esophageal leakage. The proposed movie-like Bi-DTPA-enhanced X-ray imaging approach presents a promising alternative to traditional GI radiography based on iodinated molecules. It demonstrates significant potential in addressing concerns related to iodine-associated adverse effects and offers an alternative method for visually detecting gastrointestinal leaks.

RESUMO

Pelvic masses frequently originate from the pelvic cavity and are often associated with uterine, ovarian, or intestinal disorders. This report describes the case of a patient with a pelvic mass diagnosed as a retroperitoneal dermoid cyst at our hospital. We analyzed this case and conducted a literature review, to mitigate the risk of misdiagnosis and enhance the treatment of retroperitoneal masses.

Herein, spore@Cu-trimesic acid (TMA) biocomposites were prepared by self-assembling Cu-based metal-organic framework on the surface of Bacillus velezensis spores. The laccase-like activity of spore@Cu-TMA biocomposites was enhanced by 14.9 times compared with that of pure spores due to the reaction of Cu2+ ions with laccase on the spore surface and the microporous structure of Cu-TMA shell promoting material transport and increasing substrate accessibility. Spore@Cu-TMA rapidly oxidized and transformed 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) into ABTS●+ without using H2O2. Under optimum conditions, the ABTS●+ could be stored for 21 days at 4 °C and 7 days at 37 °C without the addition of any stabilizers, allowing for the large-scale preparation and long-term storage of ABTS●+. The ultrarobust stable ABTS●+ obtained with the use of Cu-TMA could effectively reduce the "back reaction" by preventing the leaching of the metabolites released by the spores. On the basis of these findings, a rapid, low-cost, and eco-friendly colorimetric platform was successfully developed for the detection of antioxidant capacity. Determination of antioxidant capacity for several antioxidants such as caffeic acid, glutathione, and Trolox revealed their corresponding limits of detection at 4.83, 8.89, and 7.39 nM, respectively, with linear ranges of 0.01-130, 0.01-140, and 0.01-180 µM, respectively. This study provides a facile way to prepare ultrarobust stable ABTS●+ and presents a potential application of spore@Cu-TMA biocomposites in food detection and bioanalysis.

Magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT) has garnered immense interest due to its exceptional spatiotemporal specificity, minimal invasiveness and remarkable tissue penetration depth. Nevertheless, the limited magnetothermal heating capability and the potential toxicity of metal ions in magnetic materials based on metallic elements significantly impede the advancement of MHT. Herein, we introduce the concept of nonmetallic materials, with graphite (Gra) as a proof of concept, as a highly efficient and biocompatible option for MHT of tumors in vivo for the first time. The Gra exhibits outstanding magnetothermal heating efficacy owing to the robust eddy thermal effect driven by its excellent electrical conductivity. Furthermore, being composed of carbon, Gra offers superior biocompatibility as carbon is an essential element for all living organisms. Additionally, the Gra boasts customizable shapes and sizes, low cost, and large-scale production capability, facilitating reproducible and straightforward manufacturing of various Gra implants. In a mouse tumor model, Gra-based MHT successfully eliminates the tumors at an extremely low magnetic field intensity, which is less than one-third of the established biosafety threshold. This study paves the way for the development of high-performance magnetocaloric materials by utilizing nonmetallic materials in place of metallic ones burdened with inherent limitations.

BACKGROUND: Adalimumab monotherapy can suppress gut inflammation and induce remission in active Crohn's disease but has some limitations. Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is recommended for patients with mild to moderate Crohn's disease (CD), but implementation is challenging. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of adalimumab combined with partial enteral nutrition (PEN) in the induction therapy for Crohn's disease. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was designed and a total of 56 patients with active CD who met the criteria for enteral nutrition (EN) treatment in our hospital were selected. The baseline data of all patients were collected including age, sex and other general information. The changes in fecal calprotectin, C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin(Alb), hemoglobin (Hb), platelets (Plt), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Crohn's disease activity index score (CDAI), simple endoscopic score (SES-CD) and body mass index (BMI) were compared between the adalimumab combined with enteral nutrition (ADA+EN) group (N = 37) the adalimumab group (ADA) (N = 19) at week 0 (W0) and treatment outcomes at week 12(W12). Additionally, the differences between the two groups before and after treatment were evaluated. Then the ADA+EN group was divided into an adalimumab combined with exclusive enteral nutrition subgroup (ADA+EEN) and an adalimumab combined with partial nutrition subgroup (ADA+PEN) according to enteral nutrition intake. The changes in fecal calprotectin, CRP, Alb, Hb, Plt, ESR and CDAI, SES-CD and BMI were compared between the  ADA+EEN group and the ADA+PEN group at week 0 (W0) and treatment outcomes at week 12(W12). The differences between the two groups before and after treatment were evaluated. To evaluate the effectiveness of the two treatments on patients' quality of life, nutritional recovery and body composition, patients in the ADA+EN group were needed to complete the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ), EQ-5D-5L, the EuroQol visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS) and body composition analysis.A total of 28 patients completed all questionnaires and body composition analyses at week 0 and week 12, including 10 patients in the ADA+EEN group and 18 patients in the ADA+PEN group, respectively. The differences of in IBDQ, EQ-5D-5L and body composition analysis were compared between the two groups at week 0 (W0) and treatment outcomes at week 12(W12). Additionally, the differences between the two groups before and after treatment were evaluated. RESULTS: These investigated indexes such as calprotectin, Hb, Plt, ESR, Alb, BMI, CRP, CDAI and SES-CD scores were significantly different before and after treatment  in the ADA+EN group (p < 0.01). However, fecal calprotectin, Hb, SES-CD scores and Alb in the ADA group were not statistically significantly different from W0 to W12 (p > 0.05). The fecal calprotectin and CDAI scores in the ADA+EN group were significantly lower than those in the ADA group after treatment. The differences in all factors before and after treatment between the ADA+PEN group and the ADA+EEN group were statistically significant (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups at week 12 (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Adalimumab combined with EN are more effective than ADA monotherapy in terms of endoscopy and clinical remission. By comparing the investigated indicators such as calprotectin, Hb, Plt, ESR ,CRP and SES-CD scores, it was proven that adalimumab combined with partial enteral nutrition or exclusive enteral nutrition has the same remission effect in induced Crohn's disease. The combination of biological agents and partial nutrition can improve medical order compliance, psychological burden and quality of life. Therefore, adalimumab combined with partial nutrition can be used as the first-line treatment for CD induced remission.

The objective of this work is utilizing fly ash to synthesize tobermorite (TOB) with a higher specific surface area and layered structure, and incorporating it into the starch/acrylic acid network to boost the drought resistance, water retention and heavy metal adsorption properties. The water absorption and water retention performance and cadmium adsorption characteristics of tobermorite/leftover rice-based composite hydrogel (TOB@LR-CH) were evaluated by water absorption swelling test, soil evaporation test and batch adsorption experiment. By adjusting the addition of TOB and other synthesized conditions, the swelling property (from 114.80 g/g to 322.64 g/g), water retention (71.80 %, 144 h) and Cd2+ adsorption characteristics (up to 591.36 mg/g) were significantly enhanced. Adding a moderate amount of TOB (2 wt%) provided the most uniform tobermorite dispersion during synthesis, and TOB2@LR-CH exhibited the most stable three-dimensional network and highest proportion of effective TOB. The adsorption behavior of cadmium on TOB2@LR-CH was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Additionally, the regeneration test results displayed that the adsorption removal rate of cadmium by TOB2@LR-CH adsorbent remained stable after 5 cycles. This study demonstrates that TOB@LR-CH has good water absorption and water retention potential in arid and semi-arid soils, and also has potential application prospects in remediating Cd(II)-contaminated soil.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess quantitatively articular cartilage volume, thickness, and T2 value alterations in meniscus tear patients. Materials and methods: The study included 32 patients with meniscus tears (17 females, 15 males; mean age: 40.16 ± 11.85 years) and 24 healthy controls (12 females; 12 males; mean age: 36 ± 9.14 years). All subjects were examined by 3 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 3D dual-echo steady-state (DESS) and T2 mapping images. All patients underwent diagnostic arthroscopy and treatment. Cartilage thickness, cartilage volume and T2 values of 21 subregions of knee cartilage were measured using the prototype KneeCaP software (version 2.1; Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany). Mann-Whitney-U tests were utilized to determine if there were any significant differences among subregional articular cartilage volume, thickness and T2 value between patients with meniscus tear and the control group. Results: The articular cartilage T2 values in all subregions of the femur and tibia in the meniscus tear group were significantly higher (p< 0.05) than in the healthy control group. The cartilage thickness of the femoral condyle medial, femur trochlea, femur condyle lateral central, tibia plateau medial anterior and patella facet medial inferior in the meniscus tear group were slightly higher than in the control group (p< 0.05). In the femur trochlea medial, patella facet medial inferior, tibia plateau lateral posterior and tibia plateau lateral central, there were significant differences in relative cartilage volume percentage between the meniscus tear group and the healthy control group (p< 0.05). Nineteen patients had no cartilage abnormalities (Grade 0) in the meniscus tear group, as confirmed by arthroscopic surgery, and their T2 values in most subregions were significantly higher (p< 0.05) than those of the healthy control group. Conclusion: The difference in articular cartilage indexes between patients with meniscus tears and healthy people without such tears can be detected by using quantitative MRI. Quantitative T2 values enable early and sensitive detection of early cartilage lesions.

Fetal development is vital in the human lifespan. Therefore, it is essential to characterize exposure by a series of typical environmental magnetic and electromagnetic fields. In particular, there has recently been a sharp increase in the twin birth rate. However, lack of appropriate models has prohibited dosimetric evaluation, restricting characterization of the impact of these environmental factors on twins. The present study developed two whole-body pregnant models of 31 and 32 weeks of gestation with twin fetuses and explored several typical exposure scenarios, including 50-Hz uniform magnetic field exposure, local 125-kHz magnetic field (MF), and 13.56-MHz electromagnetic field exposure, as well as wideband planewave radiofrequency (RF) exposure from 20 to 6000 MHz. Finally, dosimetric results were derived. Compared to the singleton pregnancy with similar weeks of gestation, twin fetuses were overexposed at 50-Hz uniform MF, but they were probably underexposed in the RF scenarios with frequencies for wireless communications. Furthermore, the twin fetuses manifested large dosimetric variability compared to the singleton, which was attributed to the incident direction and fetal position. Based on the analysis, the dosimetric results over the entire gestation period were estimated. The results can be helpful to estimate the risk of twin-fetal exposure to electromagnetic fields and examine the conservativeness of the international guidelines.© 2022 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) ZFAS1 (zinc finger antisense 1) was demonstrated to play critical roles in various cancer progression. However, the functions of ZFAS in cervical cancers (CC) are unclear. Human CC cell lines were used for in vitro experiments. RT-qPCR (Real Time Quantitative PCR) was performed to detect the expression of ZFAS1, microRNA-190a-3p (miR-190a-3p) and Kruppel-like factor 6 (KLF6). Cell proliferation, invasion and migration assays were used to investigate biological behaviors of CC cells related to CC progression. The relationship of KLF6 to ZFAS1 and miR-190a-3p was analyzed by circRIP and luciferase reporter assay. In addition, in vivo experiment was carried out to explore the function of ZFAS1 in tumor growth of CC. The expression levels of ZFAS1 and KLF6 were both significantly elevated, while the expression of miR-190a-3p was inhibited in CC tumor tissues. In addition, ZFAS1 influenced CC tumor growth through miR-190a-3p. KLF6 was a target of miR-190a-3p and inhibited miR-190a-3p-induced CC tumor growth. Furthermore, KLF6 was negatively regulated by miR-190a-3p, but positively regulated by ZFAS1. Overexpression of ZFAS1 and inhibition of miR-190a-3p significantly increased the expression levels of KLF6. Finally, in vitro assays demonstrated that inhibition of ZFAS1 reduced CC tumor growth and the expression levels of KLF6, but increased the expression levels of miR-190a-3p. ZFAS1 could regulate CC pathogenesis via regulating the miR-190a-3p/KLF6 axis, which might be considered as new CC therapeutic targets.

With the rapid development of flexible and wearable electronic devices, research on high-sensitivity strain sensors has been attracting much attention. Here, glutaraldehyde is used as a cross-linking reagent to precross-link poly(vinyl alcohol); then FeCl3·6H2O is added into the precross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) to obtain composite films of FeCl3@PVA after gelatinization and freeze drying. Elastic conductive films of polypyrrole@poly(vinyl alcohol) (PPy@PVA) are prepared by immersing FeCl3@PVA into a solution of pyrrole in acetonitrile and water to complete the polymerization in situ. The effects of the concentrations of glutaraldehyde and FeCl3·6H2O on the film's structure and properties have been studied in detail; the results show that the strain sensor prepared from the optimized film has excellent stretchability (strain up to 309.5%), mechanical property (tensile strength of 32.8 MPa), and relatively high sensitivity (gauge factor can reach 5.07 under 1.0% strain). It can be used to detect various tiny physiological signals, for example, detecting the number of pulse beats, bending of the knuckles at different frequencies, and recognizing the pronunciation of different words by vocal cord vibration. These good properties mean that this kind of PPy@PVA strain sensor has great application prospects in physiological monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the cervix (CCAC), a rare and more severe type of gynecological cancer, is especially rare in pediatric patients. Traditionally, surgery following chemotherapy (CT) and radiation therapy is the preferred treatment for CCAC; however, patients have poor 5-year survival rates than other types of cervical cancers. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 6-year-old girl with a history of vaginal discharge for 18 months was diagnosed with CCAC by histological examination. Her parents refused the traditional treatment of radical hysterectomy and lymph node dissection because of her young age. DIAGNOSIS: The patient's tests revealed negative human papilloma virus and negative methylated paired box 1 gene results. The tumor mass histopathology revealed stage IIA1 CCAC that originated from the cervix. INTERVENTIONS: Tumor mass excision with preservation of the cervix by electrosurgical biopsy under hysteroscopy was performed. Four cycles of docetaxel and oxaliplatin CT were administered every 3 weeks. OUTCOMES: No signs of recurrence were observed in the 28 months after final treatment and diagnosis on magnetic resonance imaging, color ultrasonic imaging, and gynecological examination. Serologic tumor biomarkers were also within normal ranges. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported CCAC case in which the primary treatment included electrosurgical biopsy of the polypoid mass under hysteroscopy, followed by CT without traditional treatment: radical surgery with pelvic and/or lymphadenectomy for fertility preservation. This is a new treatment approach for young CCAC patients without the use of surgery.

BACKGROUND: We developed a computational model integrating clinical data and imaging features extracted from contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images, to predict lymph node (LN) metastasis in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). METHODS: This retrospective study included 159 patients with PDAC (118 in the primary cohort and 41 in the validation cohort) who underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography examination between 2012 and 2015. All patients underwent surgery and lymph node status was determined. A total of 2041 radiomics features were extracted from venous phase images in the primary cohort, and optimal features were extracted to construct a radiomics signature. A combined prediction model was built by incorporating the radiomics signature and clinical characteristics selected by using multivariable logistic regression. Clinical prediction models were generated and used to evaluate both cohorts. RESULTS: Fifteen features were selected for constructing the radiomics signature based on the primary cohort. The combined prediction model for identifying preoperative lymph node metastasis reached a better discrimination power than the clinical prediction model, with an area under the curve of 0.944 vs. 0.666 in the primary cohort, and 0.912 vs. 0.713 in the validation cohort. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study demonstrated that a noninvasive radiomics signature extracted from contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging can be conveniently used for preoperative prediction of lymph node metastasis in patients with PDAC.

Octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-modified starch and maltodextrins (MDs) are important carbohydrate polymers as wall materials. However, few studies have shown whether these two wall materials affect the composition of core materials. In this work, we investigated the effects of OSA-modified starch and MD on the release property of essential oils. Results showed that among the seven characteristic aroma components (CACs) of rose essential oil (REO), the esters released the fastest, followed by the alcohols, while the release of the phenols was the slowest. Environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidities (RHs) had significant influences on the release kinetics of CACs in REO. This work provides new insights into the use of OSA-modified starch and MDs as wall materials for encapsulating complex and bioactive components.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the miR-21 and evaluated its clinical significance. METHODS: Total RNA was extracted from 30 pairs of fresh specimens of cervical cancer and normal tissues. The expression levels of the miR-21-3p and miR-21-5p were detected by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, with U6 as the internal reference gene. We compared the expression of miR-21-3p and miR-21-5p between study group and control groups, the association between miRNA expression level and clinicopathological factors was investigated. RESULTS: The expression of miR-21-3p and miR-21-5p in HPV positive cervical cancer samples was significantly upregulated compared to that in the paired normal samples (P < 0.05); A multivariate analysis demonstrated that the expression of miR-21 was associated with clinicopathological parameters, including depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: MiR-21 upregulation is associated with aggressive progression and poor prognosis in cervical cancer, which suggests that miR-21 might be identified as an independent marker for predicting the clinical outcome of cervical cancer patients.

UNLABELLED: High risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the major cause of cervical cancer. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is considered as the most prevalent vaginal imbalance affecting women of reproductive age. However, the relationship between HPV and BV infection is unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection combined with bacterial vaginosis (BV) infection in Shanghai suburbs and evaluate associations between bacterial vaginosis with HPV infection, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. METHODS: From October 1, 2009 to October 31, 2013, a total number of 3502 women who visited Fengxian Hospital, Southern Medical University were enrolled in this study. All participants gave informed consent and agreed to HPV, BV, chlamydia, mycoplasma and thinprepcytologic test (TCT). In addition, all women took histopathologic examination under colposcopy. Statistical analyses were done using SPSS 17.0 for windows (IBM). In present study the overall BV-positive rate was 9.25%. The top three high risk HPV types were listed as follows (in descending order): HPV16, 52, 58. Moreover, our data showed BV infection tended to occur in the HPV positive women, HPV infection also tended to occur in the BV positive women. Most of the women who present HPV with BV infection were younger than 30 years old. We also found that CIN and cervical cancer occurred mainly in HPV/BV positive and HPV with BV positive group. BV infection and HPV infection may haveconsistency or synergies. HPV with BV infection may increase the incidence of CIN and cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: Dexamethasone (DEX) has been routinely used as a pre-treatment in the clinical application of paclitaxel (PTX) to treat ovarian cancer. However, PTX-induced apoptosis might be inhibited by DEX. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of DEX on the apoptosis induced by PTX. METHODS: Both of SKOV-3 and HO-8910 human ovarian cancer cells were divided into four groups: (1) untreated (Con); (2) treated with DEX (0.1 µM) alone; (3) treated with PTX (50 nM); and (4) pre-treated with DEX (0.1 µM), and 24 h later, treated with PTX (DEX + PTX). Cell proliferation was determined by the 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-di- phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) dye uptake method, while cell apoptosis was analyzed by propidium iodide (PI) staining and flow cytometry. Then, reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCRs) were applied to semi-quantitative analysis, followed by western blot analysis. Statistical analysis was performed, with Fisher's least significant difference test. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that DEX can differentially inhibit SKOV-3 and HO-8910 cell proliferation induced by PTX and decrease the apoptosis rates in cancer cells. Pre-treatment with DEX could up-regulate the expressions of members of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family (Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL) and members of IAP family (survivin). The expression of cleaved caspase-3 was down-regulated by DEX, shown by semi-quantitative RT-PCRs and western blot analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our data gained invaluable insights of the antagonistic mechanisms of DEX on PTX-induced cancer cell death and may provide new methods of using DEX as antineoplastic drugs or agents in the clinical treatment for ovarian cancer patients.

Accumulating evidence has suggested that estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) PvuII polymorphism might be involved in the development of prostate cancer (PCa). However, the results have been inconsistent. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to clarify the associations between ER-α PvuII polymorphism and PCa. A comprehensive search was conducted to identify all case-control studies of ER-α PvuII polymorphism and PCa risk. We used odds ratios (ORs) to assess the strength of the association and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to give a sense of the precision of the estimate. A total of 14 studies were found to be eligible for meta-analyses of PvuII variant. Results from this study showed that ER-α PvuII polymorphism were significantly associated with PCa risk under all genetic models in overall population (homogeneous codominant model, OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.11-2.21, P = 0.010; heterogeneous codominant model, OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.06-1.77, P = 0.02; recessive model, OR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.02-1.57, P = 0.03; dominant model, OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.09-1.79, P = 0.009; and allelic model, OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.06-1.48, P = 0.010). Further sensitivity analysis confirmed the significant association. In subgroup analyses stratified by PCa type, there was a significant association between PvuII polymorphism and sporadic PCa risk under both Caucasians and Asians. The meta-analysis indicated elected PvuII polymorphism of ER-α was a risk factor for PCa development.
