INTRODUCTION: The colorectal serrated pathway involves precursor lesions known as sessile serrated lesions (SSL) and traditional serrated adenomas (TSA). Mutations in BRAF or KRAS are crucial early events in this pathway. Additional genetic and epigenetic changes contribute to the progression of these lesions into high-grade lesions and, eventually, invasive carcinoma. METHODS: We employed digital spatial profiling to investigate the transcriptional changes associated with SSL and TSA. The genes identified are confirmed by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Colorectal (CRC) cell lines with CEACAM6 overexpression and knockdown were established to study the roles of CEACAM6 on tumorigenesis of CRC. RESULTS: Ten genes were upregulated in SSL and TSA, and seven were upregulated in both types of lesions. IHC staining confirmed overexpression of CEACAM6, LCN2, KRT19, and lysozyme in SSL and TSA. CEACAM6 expression is an early event in the serrated pathway but a late event in the conventional pathway. Using cell line models, we confirmed that CEACAM6 promotes CRC cells' proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities. CONCLUSION: These results highlight that the transcriptional changes in the early stages of tumorigenesis exhibit relative uniformity. Identifying these early events may hold significant promise in elucidating the mechanisms behind tumor initiation.

BACKGROUND: Recent interest in understanding cardiomyocyte cell cycle has been driven by potential therapeutic applications in cardiomyopathy. However, despite recent advances, cardiomyocyte mitosis remains a poorly understood process. For example, it is unclear how sarcomeres are disassembled during mitosis to allow the abscission of daughter cardiomyocytes. METHODS: Here, we use a proteomics screen to identify adducin, an actin capping protein previously not studied in cardiomyocytes, as a regulator of sarcomere disassembly. We generated many adeno-associated viruses and cardiomyocyte-specific genetic gain-of-function models to examine the role of adducin in neonatal and adult cardiomyocytes in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: We identify adducin as a regulator of sarcomere disassembly during mammalian cardiomyocyte mitosis. α/γ-adducins are selectively expressed in neonatal mitotic cardiomyocytes, and their levels decline precipitously thereafter. Cardiomyocyte-specific overexpression of various splice isoforms and phospho-isoforms of α-adducin in identified Thr445/Thr480 phosphorylation of a short isoform of α-adducin as a potent inducer of neonatal cardiomyocyte sarcomere disassembly. Concomitant overexpression of this α-adducin variant along with γ-adducin resulted in stabilization of the adducin complex and persistent sarcomere disassembly in adult mice, which is mediated by interaction with α-actinin. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight an important mechanism for coordinating cytoskeletal morphological changes during cardiomyocyte mitosis.

Considering the limited efficacy of current therapies in lung, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers, innovative combination treatments with diverse mechanisms of action are needed to improve patients' outcomes. Chitinase-3 like-1 protein (CHI3L1) emerges as a versatile factor with significant implications in various diseases, particularly cancers, fostering an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment for cancer progression. Therefore, pre-clinical validation is imperative to fully realize its potential in cancer treatment. We developed phage display-derived fully human monoclonal CHI3L1 neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) and verified the nAbs-antigen binding affinity and specificity in lung, pancreatic and colorectal cancer cell lines. Tumor growth signals, proliferation and migration ability were all reduced by CHI3L1 nAbs in vitro. Orthotopic or subcutaneous tumor mice model and humanized mouse model were established for characterizing the anti-tumor properties of two CHI3L1 nAb leads. Importantly, CHI3L1 nAbs not only inhibited tumor growth but also mitigated fibrosis, angiogenesis, and restored immunostimulatory functions of immune cells in pancreatic, lung, and colorectal tumor mice models. Mechanistically, CHI3L1 nAbs directly suppressed the activation of pancreatic stellate cells and the transformation of macrophages into myofibroblasts, thereby attenuating fibrosis. These findings strongly support the therapeutic potential of CHI3L1 nAbs in overcoming clinical challenges, including the failure of gemcitabine in pancreatic cancer.

OBJECTIVE: We describe a rare case of uterine mesothelial cysts mimicking ovarian cysts in a primipara patient with a history of Cesarean section. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old female patient with history of Cesarean section presented with dysmenorrhea. Sonography revealed that a hypoechoic and anechoic multicystic complex, which was located on the right side of the pelvic cavity, had infiltrated the adjacent posterior wall of the uterus, and it was preoperatively misdiagnosed as ovarian cysts with suspected endometrioma. Laparoscopic surgery revealed multiple cystic lesions filled with clear yellow fluid on the posterior uterine wall instead of the adnexa. Laparoscopic uterine cystectomy was performed, and the patient's recovery was uneventful. Pathohistological and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed the diagnosis of uterine mesothelial cysts. CONCLUSION: Uterine mesothelial cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pelvic lesions. Increasing the awareness of this rare disease can contribute to improved evaluation, decision-making, and disease management.

Abstract Background/purpose: Computer aided implant surgery has been widely adopted in modern implant dentistry. However, absence of reliable anatomic landmarks for superimposing digital data sets for patients with terminal dentition or complete edentulism remained challenging. Utilization of additional fiducial markers intraorally as the reference points for the improvement of accuracy became crucial in implant digital workflow. Nevertheless, the choice of the material for fiducial markers should present the least radiographic artifacts under cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for better accuracy. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the volume of radiographic artifacts generated through different materials under the image of CBCT. Materials and methods: Fifteen dental materials were selected and configured into cubic shape. All the materials were scanned initially with the laboratory scanner as the control groups. The samples were scanned by CBCT machine as test groups and the volume of artifact generated under CBCT images were compared and analyzed using 3D modeling software. Results: Eleven out of fifteen materials could be recognized under CBCT images. Volumetric analysis reported that statistically significant differences among the materials could be noted, and the flowable composite resin presented the least volumetric difference. Lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, flowable composite resin, and gutta-percha presented the least deformation and maintained their cubic shapes. Conclusion: The results of the present study may imply that flowable composite resin compared to all ceramic materials, amalgam and gutta-percha may be a preferable choice when utilized as fiducial markers under CBCT images.

Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a commonly used technique for treating lumbar degenerative diseases. In this study, we developed a fully computer-supported pipeline to predict both the cage height and the degree of lumbar lordosis subtraction from the pelvic incidence (PI-LL) after TLIF surgery, utilizing preoperative X-ray images. The automated pipeline comprised two primary stages. First, the pretrained BiLuNet deep learning model was employed to extract essential features from X-ray images. Subsequently, five machine learning algorithms were trained using a five-fold cross-validation technique on a dataset of 311 patients to identify the optimal models to predict interbody cage height and postoperative PI-LL. LASSO regression and support vector regression demonstrated superior performance in predicting interbody cage height and postoperative PI-LL, respectively. For cage height prediction, the root mean square error (RMSE) was calculated as 1.01, and the model achieved the highest accuracy at a height of 12 mm, with exact prediction achieved in 54.43% (43/79) of cases. In most of the remaining cases, the prediction error of the model was within 1 mm. Additionally, the model demonstrated satisfactory performance in predicting PI-LL, with an RMSE of 5.19 and an accuracy of 0.81 for PI-LL stratification. In conclusion, our results indicate that machine learning models can reliably predict interbody cage height and postoperative PI-LL.

Background: Pulmonary infections are a crucial health concern for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Whether the clinical outcome of pulmonary infection is influenced by immunotherapy(IO) remains unclear. By evaluating immune signatures, this study investigated the post-immunotherapy risk of pulmonary infection in patients with lung cancer and identified circulating biomarkers that predict post-immunotherapy infection. Methods: Blood specimens were prospectively collected from patients with NSCLC before and after chemotherapy(C/T) and/or IO to explore dynamic changes in immune signatures. Real-world clinical data were extracted from medical records for outcome evaluation. Mass cytometry and ELISA were employed to analyze immune signatures and cytokine profiles to reveal potential correlations between immune profiles and the risk of infection. Results: The retrospective cohort included 283 patients with advanced NSCLC. IO was associated with a lower risk of pneumonia (odds ratio=0.46, p=0.012). Patients receiving IO and remained pneumonia-free exhibited the most favorable survival outcomes compared with those who received C/T or developed pneumonia (p<0.001). The prospective cohort enrolled 30 patients. The proportion of circulating NK cells significantly increased after treatment in IO alone (p<0.001) and C/T+IO group (p<0.01). An increase in cell densities of circulating PD-1+CD8+(cytotoxic) T cells (p<0.01) and PD-1+CD4+ T cells (p<0.01) were observed in C/T alone group after treatment. In IO alone group, a decrease in cell densities of TIM-3+ and PD-1+ cytotoxic T cells (p<0.05), and PD-1+CD4+ T cells (p<0.01) were observed after treatment. In C/T alone and C/T+IO groups, cell densities of circulating PD-1+ cytotoxic T cells significantly increased in patients with pneumonia after treatment(p<0.05). However, in IO alone group, cell density of PD-1+ cytotoxic T cells significantly decreased in patients without pneumonia after treatment (p<0.05). TNF-α significantly increased after treatment with IO alone (p<0.05) but decreased after C/T alone (p<0.01). Conclusions: Our results indicate that the incorporation of immunotherapy into treatment regimens may potentially offer protective effects against pulmonary infection. Protective effects are associated with reduction of exhausted T-cells and augmentation of TNF-α and NK cells. Exhausted T cells, NK cells, and TNF-α may play crucial roles in immune responses against infections. These observations highlight the potential utility of certain circulating biomarkers, particularly exhausted T cells, for predicting post-treatment infections.

Leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 2 (LECT2) is a multifunctional cytokine that can bind to several receptors and mediate distinct molecular pathways in various cell settings. Changing levels of LECT2 have been implicated in multiple human disease states, including cancers. Here, we have demonstrated reduced serum levels of LECT2 in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and down-regulated circulating Lect2 as the disease progresses in a syngeneic mouse ID8 EOC model. Using the murine EOC model, we discovered that loss of Lect2 promotes EOC progression by modulating both tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment. Lect2 inhibited EOC cells' invasive phenotype and suppressed EOC's transcoelomic metastasis by targeting c-Met signaling. In addition, Lect2 downregulation induced the accumulation and activation of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). This fostered an immunosuppressive microenvironment in EOC by inhibiting T-cell activation and skewing macrophages toward an M2 phenotype. The therapeutic efficacy of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 pathway blockade for the ID8 model was significantly hindered. Overall, our data highlight multiple functions of Lect2 during EOC progression and reveal a rationale for synergistic immunotherapeutic strategies by targeting Lect2.

OBJECTIVES: Molecular subtyping of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) tumors based on the expression of four transcription factors (ASCL1, NEUROD1, POU2F3, and YAP1) using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining has recently emerged as a proposed approach. This study was aimed to examine this subtyping method in Asian patients with SCLC and investigate its correlation with treatment efficacy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two tumor samples from patients with SCLC, including de novo cases and those transformed from EGFR-mutant tumors, were analyzed. IHC staining was used to measure the expression of the four transcription factors and conventional SCLC markers. Subtypes were defined based on relative expression levels. The treatment response and outcome of patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors and chemotherapy were also reviewed. RESULTS: ASCL1 was the most common subtype, observed in 55.2 % of the samples, followed by NEUROD1 (26.9 %) and POU2F3 (9 %). No tumor exhibited predominant YAP1 positivity, while 41.8 % of the samples demonstrated positivity for two subtype markers. Approximately 50 % of the patients experienced a subtype switch after disease progression. Patients with the ASCL1/NEUROD1 (SCLC-A/N) subtype had similar progression-free survival (PFS) compared to non-SCLC-A/N patients after treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors plus chemotherapy. Transformed SCLC patients had significantly worse PFS than de novo SCLC patients after chemoimmunotherapy. (2.1 vs. 5.4 months, P = 0.023) CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed the challenges associated with using IHC alone for molecular subtyping, highlighting the frequent co-expression of subtypes and temporal changes following treatment. Further research is warranted to explore the prognostic and therapeutic implications of IHC subtyping in patients with SCLC.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Transcatheter liver-directed intra-arterial therapies are mainstream treatment options for intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the effect of low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) on overall survival (OS) in these patients remains uncertain. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence and prognostic effect of LSMM in this population. METHOD: According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a comprehensive search was performed in the PubMed and Embase databases until Oct 2023. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed to determine the pooled prevalence of LSMM and calculate the hazard ratio (HR) for OS with a 95% confidence interval (CI) in patients with intermediate-stage HCC undergoing various transarterial therapies, comparing those with and without LSMM. RESULTS: Twelve studies involving 2450 patients were included. The pooled prevalence of LSMM was 46% (95% CI, 38-55%), and the results were consistent across different treatments, regions, and age subgroups. The meta-analysis indicated that LSMM was significantly associated with decreased OS (HR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.36-2.33; I2, 75%). Subgroup analyses reassured the main findings across various therapies, including transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) (HR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.23-2.30; I2, 81%), transarterial embolization (TAE) (HR, 2.45; 95% CI, 1.42-4.22; I2, 0%), and transarterial radioembolization (TARE) (HR, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.01-3.73; I2, 0%). CONCLUSIONS: In intermediate-stage HCC, LSMM is common and associated with reduced OS. To achieve an optimal prognosis, clinicians should incorporate routine LSMM measurement into practice, while caring for patients with intermediate-stage HCC, irrespective of TACE, TAE, and TARE.

RATIONALE: This case report presents a challenging medical scenario involving a young adult male who exhibited an unusual combination of symptoms, including abrupt weight loss, declining renal function, proteinuria, and concurrent onset of diabetes mellitus. Remarkably, the patient had no previous medical history or family history of similar conditions, necessitating a comprehensive investigation. PATIENT CONCERNS: On March 10, 2021, a 25-year-old male sought medical attention due to the aforementioned symptoms. Initial assessments revealed stage 5 chronic kidney disease, with elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Cr) levels, as well as significant proteinuria. The only notable physical finding was obesity, and renal ultrasound showed normal-sized kidneys without cysts. DIAGNOSIS: A treatment plan was initiated to stabilize creatinine levels, including medications such as Glimepiride, Glyxambi, Bisoprolol, Amlodipine, and Valsartan. However, despite diligent medication management, proteinuria persisted, prompting further evaluation. A renal biopsy was performed on April 12th, 2023, leading to the diagnosis of glomerulocystic kidney disease with early-stage changes indicative of diabetic nephropathy. INTERVENTIONS: The patient continues to receive ongoing care and follow-up at our outpatient clinic to optimize therapeutic interventions and elucidate the underlying etiology of this complex clinical scenario. OUTCOMES: Ongoing investigations and therapeutic interventions are crucial to understand the underlying cause and optimize patient care in this intricate clinical scenario. LESSONS: This case underscores the complexity of diagnosing and managing a young adult presenting with concurrent renal dysfunction, proteinuria, and diabetes mellitus in the absence of prior underlying conditions. It highlights the importance of comprehensive evaluation and ongoing care in such challenging cases.

PURPOSE: ALK-positive NSCLC patients exhibit a particularly high propensity for the development of brain metastases. Current guidelines suggest transit to next-line therapy (SysTx) or local radiotherapy (RadTx) including whole-brain radiotherapy and radiosurgery. However, the clinical impact of these two strategies remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis focusing on patients with stage IV ALK-positive NSCLC who underwent first-line ALK TKI treatment. Patients with intracranial progression may receive two different treatment strategies: SysTx and RadTx. Our objective was to investigate the outcomes associated with these two distinct treatment pathways. RESULTS: A total 20 patients of ALK-positive NSCLC who received first-line ALK TKI therapy and subsequently developed intracranial progression were enrolled. About 55% of patients had brain metastasis initially. Nine patients (45%) were treated with crizotinib at first. Patients treated with crizotinib demonstrated a significantly shorter intracranial PFS1 (crizotinib: 8.27 months vs. others: 27.0 months, p = 0.006). Following intracranial progression, approximately 60% of patients transitioned to the next line of systemic treatment (SysTx), while the remaining 40% opted for local cranial radiotherapy (RadTx). Intriguingly, our analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in intracranial progression-free survival (PFS2) between these two distinct treatment strategies. (SysTx: 20.87 months vs. RadTx: 28.23 months, p = 0.461). CONCLUSION: The intracranial progression-free survival showed no difference between the two strategies suggesting that both local radiotherapy and systemic therapy may be valid options. Individualized strategy, molecular analysis, and multidisciplinary conferences may all play a pivotal role in decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important indicator of patient's satisfaction about their disease course. Many factors are influential to life quality, such as dignity and resilience. Dignity is mostly explored in populations with cancer, but the understanding of dignity and its relationship with resilience and HRQoL is limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between dignity, resilience, and HRQoL among patients with cardiac disease. METHODS: A purposive sample of patients with cardiac disease with a cross-sectional design was used for this study. Four structured questionnaires were used for data collection. Dignity was measured by the Patient Dignity Inventory-Mandarin version; resilience was measured by the Chinese version of the Resilience Scale; HRQoL was measured by EuroQol 5 Dimensions. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was applied to test the hypothesized structural model. Reporting was consistent with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist. RESULTS: The mean age of all 101 participants was 72.2 years, 88.1% had coronary artery disease, and the prevalence of heart failure was 43.0%. In patients with cardiac disease, their sense of dignity was significantly associated with HRQoL, and resilience was associated with both dignity and quality of life. Notably, resilience had a mediating effect between dignity and HRQoL; dignity and resilience explained 73.0% of the variance of HRQoL. CONCLUSIONS: Dignity is a new concern in cardiac disease research, which is influential to patients' perception of disease and their HRQoL. Patients with cardiac disease with higher resilience tend to have a better HRQoL.

In DESTINY-Breast04 (DB-04), safety and efficacy of HER2-targeted antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) in previously treated HER2-low unresectable/metastatic breast cancer were established. This manuscript describes the analytical validation of PATHWAY Anti-HER2/neu (4B5) Rabbit Monoclonal Primary Antibody (PATHWAY HER2 (4B5)) to assess HER2-low status and its clinical performance in DB-04. Preanalytical processing and tissue staining parameters were evaluated to determine their impact on HER2 scoring. The recommended antibody staining procedure provided the optimal tumor staining, and deviations in cell conditioning and/or antibody incubation times resulted in unacceptable negative control staining and/or HER2-low status changes. Comparisons between antibody lots, kit lots, instruments, and day-to-day runs showed overall percent agreements (OPAs) exceeding 97.9%. Inter-laboratory reproducibility showed OPAs of ≥97.4% for all study endpoints. PATHWAY HER2 (4B5) was utilized in DB-04 for patient selection using 1340 tumor samples (59.0% metastatic, 40.7% primary, (0.3% missing data); 74.3% biopsy, 25.7% resection/excisions). Overall, 77.6% (823/1060) of samples were HER2-low by both central and local testing, with the level of concordance differing by sample region of origin and collection date. In DB-04, the efficacy of T-DXd over chemotherapy of physician's choice was consistent, regardless of the characteristics of the sample used (primary or metastatic, archival, or newly collected, biopsy or excision/resection). These results demonstrate that PATHWAY HER2 (4B5) is precise and reproducible for scoring HER2-low status and can be used with multiple breast cancer sample types for reliably identifying patients whose tumors have HER2-low expression and are likely to derive clinical benefit from T-DXd.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients have a high prevalence of coronary artery disease, and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is one of the essential treatments. ESRD patients undergoing CABG surgery have an increased risk of postoperative complications, including acute pancreatitis. Here, we present the unique case of an exceptionally large pancreatic pseudocyst caused by pancreatitis in an ESRD patient after CABG surgery. A 45-year-old male with ESRD under maintenance hemodialysis received CABG surgery for significant coronary artery disease. Two weeks later, he experienced worsening abdominal pain and a palpable mass was noticed in the epigastric region. Computer tomography revealed an unusually large pseudocyst measuring 21 × 17 cm in the retroperitoneum due to necrotizing pancreatitis. The patient underwent percutaneous cystic drainage, and the symptoms were significantly improved without surgical intervention. Factors such as prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass time, postoperative hypotension, and intradialytic hypotension appeared to have contributed to the development of severe pancreatitis in this case. This report highlights the rarity of a giant pancreatic pseudocyst in an ESRD patient after CABG surgery and emphasizes the importance of vigilant postoperative care.

OBJECTIVES: RAD51 overexpression has been reported to serve as a marker of poor prognosis in several cancer types. This study aimed to survey the role of RAD51 in oral squamous cell carcinoma and whether RAD51 could be a potential therapeutic target. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RAD51 protein expression, assessed by immunohistochemical staining, was used to examine associations with survival and clinicopathological profiles of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. Lentiviral infection was used to knock down or overexpress RAD51. The influence of RAD51 on the biological profile of oral cancer cells was evaluated. Cell viability and apoptosis after treatment with chemotherapeutic agents and irradiation were analyzed. Co-treatment with chemotherapeutic agents and B02, a RAD51 inhibitor, was used to examine additional cytotoxic effects. RESULTS: Oral squamous cell carcinoma patients with higher RAD51 expression exhibited worse survival, especially those treated with adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. RAD51 overexpression promotes resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy in oral cancer cells in vitro. Higher tumorsphere formation ability was observed in RAD51 overexpressing oral cancer cells. However, the expression of oral cancer stem cell markers did not change in immunoblotting analysis. Co-treatment with RAD51 inhibitor B02 and cisplatin, compared with cisplatin alone, significantly enhanced cytotoxicity in oral cancer cells. CONCLUSION: RAD51 is a poor prognostic marker for oral squamous cell carcinoma. High RAD51 protein expression associates with resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Addition of B02 significantly increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin. These findings suggest that RAD51 protein may function as a treatment target for oral cancer. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common complication of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Hungry bone syndrome (HBS) occurs frequently in patients on maintenance dialysis receiving parathyroidectomy for refractory SHPT. However, there is scanty study investigating the clinical risk factors that predict postoperative HBS, and its outcome in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We conducted a single-center retrospective study to analyze 66 PD patients who had undergone parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between 2009 and 2019. The patients were stratified into two groups based on the presence (n=47) or absence (n=19) of HBS after parathyroidectomy. Subtotal parathyroidectomy was the most common surgery performed (74.2%), followed by total parathyroidectomy with autoimplantation (25.8%). Pathological examination of all surgical specimens revealed parathyroid hyperplasia (100%). Patients with HBS had lower levels of postoperative nadir corrected calcium, higher alkaline phosphate (ALP), and higher potassium levels compared with patients without HBS (all P<0.05). A multivariate logistic regression model confirmed that lower preoperative serum calcium level (OR 0.354, 95% CI 0.133-0.940, P=0.037), higher ALP (OR 1.026, 95% CI 1.008-1.044, P=0.004), and higher potassium level (OR 6.894, 95% CI 1.806-26.317, P=0.005) were associated with HBS after parathyroidectomy. Patients were followed for 58.2±30.8 months after the surgery. There was no significant difference between HBS and non-HBS groups in persistence (P=0.496) or recurrence (P=1.000) of hyperparathyroidism. The overall mortality rate was 10.6% with no significant difference found between both groups (P=0.099). We concluded that HBS is a common complication (71.2%) of parathyroidectomy for SHPT and should be managed appropriately.
