Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional disease worldwide. In this study, a low methoxyl pectin (LMP)­iron(III) complex was prepared. The physicochemical and structural properties were characterized by HPSEC, HPIC, CV, FTIR, 1H NMR, XRD, SEM and CD. The results showed that iron increased the molecular weight of the LMP­iron(III) from 11.50 ± 0.32 to 12.70 ± 0.45 kDa and improved its crystallinity. Moreover, the findings demonstrated that -OH and -COOH groups in LMP coordinate with Fe3+ to form ß-FeOOH. The water-holding capacity, emulsion stability, and antioxidant activities of the LMP­iron(III) were lower than those of LMP. Furthermore, the therapeutic effects of LMP­iron(III) on IDA were investigated in rats. Following LMP­iron(III) supplementation, compared with the model group, the administration of LMP­iron(III) significantly increased the body weight, hemoglobin concentration, and serum iron concentration as well as decreased free erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentration. Therefore, the LMP­iron(III) can potentially treat IDA in rats experiments, providing a theoretical basis for the development of a promising iron supplement.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged length of stay in post-anesthesia care unit (PLOS in PACU) is a combination of risk factors and complications that can compromise quality of care and operating room efficiency. Our study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict PLOS in PACU of patients undergoing elective surgery. METHODS: Data from 24017 patients were collected. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) was used to screen variables. A logistic regression model was built on variables determined by a combined method of forward selection and backward elimination. Nomogram was designed with the model. The nomogram performance was evaluated with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for discrimination, calibration plot for consistency between predictions and actuality, and decision curve analysis (DCA) for clinical application value. RESULTS: A nomogram was established based on the selected ten variables, including age, BMI < 21 kg/m2, American society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA), surgery type, chill, delirium, pain, naloxone, operation duration and blood transfusion. The C-index value was 0.773 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.765 - 0.781] in the development set and 0.757 (95% CI = 0.744-0.770) in the validation set. The AUC was > 0.75 for the prediction of PLOS in PACU. The calibration curves revealed high consistencies between the predicted and actual probability. The DCA showed that if the threshold probability is over 10% , using the models to predict PLOS in PACU and implement intervention adds more benefit. CONCLUSIONS: This study presented a nomogram to facilitate individualized prediction of PLOS in PACU for patients undergoing elective surgery.

Eco-friendly self-doped carbon quantum dots (ZCQDs) with excellent corrosion inhibition ability were prepared via solid-phase pyrolysis only using Zanthoxylum bungeanum leaves as the raw material. Compared with the relevant research, a simpler and higher yield (25%) preparation process for carbon quantum dots was proposed. ZCQDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the average size of ZCQDs with multitudes of O- and N-containing functional groups was about 2.53 nm. The prepared ZCQDs were used to inhibit the corrosion of Q235 steel in HCl solution, and the inhibition behavior was investigated through weight loss, electrochemical test, surface analysis, and adsorption thermodynamic analyses. The results showed that the ZCQDs, acted as a mixed corrosion inhibitor, have an effective corrosion inhibition for Q235, the corrosion inhibition efficiency reached 95.98% at 200 mg/L, and at this concentration, effective protection of at least 132h (IE > 90%) is provided. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism of ZCQDs was consistent with that of Redlich-Peterson adsorption, including chemisorption and physisorption. A new corrosion inhibition mechanism of ZCQDs has been thoroughly studied and proposed; ZCQDs have functional groups containing O and N, which can form a protective barrier through physical adsorption and chemisorption, but the coverage of the protective film is low at low concentrations. With the increase of concentration, the protective film formed by ZCQDs on the metal surface will first increase the coverage and then adsorb more ZCQDs on the protective film to form a thicker and denser protective film to protect the metal. The carbon quantum dots prepared in this paper have advantages including a green, renewable precursor, a fast method, high yield, and excellent corrosion inhibition. Therefore, this work can inspire and facilitate, to a certain extent, the future application of doped carbon quantum dots as efficient corrosion inhibitors in HCl solutions.

Introduction: Cadmium (Cd) is a hazardous environmental pollutant present in soil, water, and food. Accumulation of Cd in organisms can cause systematic injury and damage to the kidney. The Masson pine pollen aqueous extract (MPPAE) has attracted increasing attention due to its antioxidant activity and ability to enhance immunity. Methods: In this study, we investigated the potential of MPPAE to protect against Cd-induced kidney damage in rats and the underlying mechanism. The transcriptome and metabolome of rats with Cd-induced kidney damage, following treatment with MPPAE, were explored. Results: The concentrations of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were both significantly altered after treatment with MPPAE. Furthermore, sequencing and analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome of rats with Cd-induced kidney damage, following treatment with MPPAE, revealed differential expression of numerous genes and metabolites compared with the untreated control rats. These differentially expressed genes (DEGs) included detoxification-related genes such as cytochrome P450 and the transporter. The differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) included 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, L-ascorbate, and ciliatine. Conjoint transcriptome and metabolome analysis showed that several DEGs were correlated with DEMs. Conclusion: These preliminary findings indicate the potential of MPPAE for the treatment of toxic metal poisoning.

Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is a popular disinfectant for swimming pools in China. However, the occurrence and importance of regulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in TCCA-disinfected swimming pools are less understood. This study analyzed 12 regulated DBPs (4 trihalomethanes (THMs), 5 haloacetic acid (HAAs), bromate, chlorate, and chlorite) in 85 swimming pool water samples and 17 input tap water samples from one swimming pool for 17 days continuously. Considering water temperature, pH, free chlorine, total chlorine, and urea, most of swimming pool water samples were within the water quality limits for China. Total concentrations of THMs, HAAs, and inorganic DBPs of 20.4-42.2, 82.0-229, and 100-729 µg/L in the swimming pool, and 16.6-28.3, 8.2-12.8, and 64.4-95.6 µg/L in the tap water, indicating inorganic DBPs are the dominant swimming pool and drinking water pollutants. Cancer risk values of regulated DBPs in swimming pools and input tap water are 2.7E-05 and 8.1E-05, respectively, and exceed the US EPA's threshold (1.0E-06). The non-cancer risk is below the US EPA's threshold. Following TCCA disinfection, the concentration and calculated cytotoxicity of regulated DBPs had a 3.6-fold and 1.9-fold increase, respectively. Inorganic DBPs contribute to the calculated concentration and cancer risks of DBPs in swimming pools and tap water at sufficient concentrations warranting regulation. This study provides data on 12 regulated DBPs in TCCA-disinfected indoor swimming pools, highlighting the importance of inorganic DBPs from evidences of concentration, cytotoxicity, and cancer risk for the first time.

Radix Astragali is one of the most famous and frequently used health food supplements and herbal medicines. Among more than 227 components of Radix Astragali, Astragaloside IV (AG IV) is famous functional compound and is commonly used as a quality marker for Radix Astragali. However, the relatively low content of AG IV in Radix Astragali (< 0.04%, w/w) severely limits its application. The purpose of this study is to improve the biotransformation of AG IV and its bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion by Poria cocos solid fermenting Radix Astragali. The optimum fermentation conditions were as follows: Inoculation amount 8 mL; fermentation time 10 d; fermentation humidity 90%. Through fermentation, the content of AG IV was increased from 384.73 to 1986.49 µg/g by 5.16-fold. After in vitro digestion, the contents of genistin, calycosin, formononetin, AG IV, Astragaloside II (AG II) and total flavonoids in fermented Radix Astragali (FRA) of enteric phase II (ENTII) were 34.52 µg/g, 207.32 µg/g, 56.76 µg/g, 2331.46 µg/g, 788.31 µg/g, 3.37 mg/g, which were 2.08-fold, 2.51-fold, 1.05-fold, 8.62-fold, 3.22-fold and 1.50-fold higher than those of control, respectively. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of FRA showed rough surface and porous structure. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rate of FRA were higher than those of control. These results showed that the Poria cocos solid fermentation could increase the content of the AG IV in Radix Astragali and improve the bioaccessibility and antioxidant activity of Radix Astragali, which is providing new ideas for future development and utilization of Radix Astragali.

OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to derive a risk prediction model for skin cancer utilizing the United Network for Organ Sharing database population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of the 24734 adults (>18 years old) heart transplant recipients (2000-2015) in the United Network for Organ Sharing database, 2625 recipients developed skin cancer. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed; P values, hazard ratios, and confidence intervals were derived. The model was tested using receiver operating characteristics curves and area under the curves. MATLAB software (MathWorks) was used for analyses. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that White patients had a hazard ratio of 31.7 compared with Black patients (P < .001). Male patients had a hazard ratio of 2.52 (P < .001) compared with female patients. Malignancy at listing showed a hazard ratio of 1.77 (P < .001). Thymoglobulin had a hazard ratio of 1.19 (P = .005) compared with other induction agents. The receiver operating characteristic curves generated for 5 years, 8 years, and 10 years after transplant showed area under the curve values of 0.78, 0.77, and 0.76, respectively, in the training set and 0.75, 0.75, and 0.74, respectively, in the validation set. CONCLUSIONS: Male sex, White ethnicity, older age, malignancy at the time of listing or at time of transplant, and thymoglobulin induction are major risk factors for skin cancers after transplant. This risk prediction model has a C statistic of 0.75. To our knowledge,this is the firsttime such a model has been generated for skin cancers in this population.

Male reproductive infections are known to shape the immunological homeostasis of the testes, leading to male infertility. However, the specific pathogenesis of these changes remains poorly understood. Exosomes released in the inflammatory microenvironment are important in communication between the local microenvironment and recipient cells. Here, we aim to identify the immunomodulatory properties of inflammatory testes-derived exosomes (IT-exos) and explore their underlying mechanisms in orchitis. IT-exos were isolated using a uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC)-induced orchitis model and confirmed that IT-exos promoted proinflammatory M1 activation with increasing expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in vitro. We further used small RNA sequencing to identify the differential miRNA profiles in exosomes and primary testicular macrophages (TMs) from normal and UPEC-infected testes, respectively, and identified that miR-155-5p was highly enriched in IT-exos and TMs from inflammatory testes. Further study of bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs) transfected with miR-155-5p mimic showed that macrophages polarized to proinflammatory phenotype. In addition, the mice that were administrated IT-exos showed remarkable activation of TM1-like macrophages; however, IT-exos with silencing miR-155-5p showed a decrease in proinflammatory responses. Overall, we demonstrate that miR-155-5p delivered by IT-exos plays an important role in the activation of TM1 in UPEC-induced orchitis. Our study provides a new perspective on the immunological mechanisms underlying inflammation-related male infertility.

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/ß-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag-O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/ß-CD modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to detect Fe(II) and Fe(III) simultaneously. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that N-CQDs/AgNPs/ß-CD enhanced electrode performances because of the synergistic effect between N-CQDs, AgNPs and ß-CD. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) released from four iron supplementations in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

Quercetin has a wide range of biological properties that can be used to prevent or decrease particular inflammatory diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the gene expression profile and metabolic pathway of the gut microbiota of an antibiotic-treated mouse model administered quercetin. Blood, feces, and intestinal tissue samples were collected and metagenomic sequencing, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and western blot analysis were used to detect variations. The results showed that the quercetin-treated group exhibited increased levels of health beneficial bacterial species, including Faecalibaculum rodentium (103.13%), Enterorhabdus caecimuris (4.13%), Eggerthella lenta (4%), Roseburia hominis (1.33%), and Enterorhabdus mucosicola (1.79%), compared with the model group. These bacterial species were positively related to butyrate, propionate, and intestinal tight junction proteins (zonula occludens-1 and occludin) expression, but negatively related to serum lipopolysaccharide and tumor necrosis factor-α level. In addition, the metabolic pathway analysis showed that dietary quercetin significantly enhanced spliceosomes (111.11%), tight junctions (62.96%), the citrate cycle (10.41%), pyruvate metabolism (6.95%), and lysine biosynthesis (5.06%), but decreasing fatty acid biosynthesis (23.91%) and N-glycan (7.37%) biosynthesis. Furthermore, these metabolic pathway changes were related to relative changes in the abundance of 10 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes genes (K00244, K00341, K02946, K03737, K01885, k10352, k11717, k10532, K02078, K01191). In conclusion, dietary quercetin increased butyrate-producing bacterial species, and the acetyl-CoA-mediated increased butyrate accelerated carbohydrate, energy metabolism, reduced cell motility and endotoxemia, and increased the gut barrier function, thereby leading to healthy colonic conditions for the host.

The dairy farming industry is facing massive economic losses as heat stress continues to rise. The purpose of this study was to see how feeding Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture (SC) influences productive performance, lactation performance, serum biochemical indexes, hormonal level, antioxidant capacity, and immune function in mid-lactating cows during heat stress. Forty-five healthy mid-lactation dairy cows with comparable milk yield, lactation days, and parity were randomly divided into 3 groups (15 cows in each group). The control group (CON) was fed the basal diet, while the treatment groups were fed the basal diet + first Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture 100 g/d (SC-1) and the basal diet + second Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture 30 g/d (SC-2), respectively. The SC-1 and SC-2 groups with SC added in the treatment groups reduced rectal temperature and respiratory rate in heat-stressed cows (P < 0.05). The milk yield of SC-1 and SC-2 treatment groups was significantly higher than that of CON (P < 0.05). Except for somatic cell count, which was significantly lower in SC-1 and SC-2 than in CON (P < 0.05), there were no significant differences in the milk components. The addition of SC: (i) increased serum urea levels (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in glucose, total cholesterol, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, total protein, albumin and alkaline phosphatase levels (P > 0.05); (ii) increased serum levels of immunoglobulin-A, immunoglobulin-G, immunoglobulin M, interleukin-4, interleukin-10 and heat shock protein-70 (P < 0.05), while decreasing serum levels of interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, interleukin-2, interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α (P < 0.05); (iii) increased total antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in serum (P < 0.05), while decreasing malondialdehyde; (iv) increased serum levels of glucocorticoids, insulin, cortisol and prolactin (P < 0.05), while decreasing the serum levels of triiodothyronine and thyroxine (P < 0.05). In conclusion, under the current experimental conditions, the addition of SC can reduce rectal temperature and respiratory rate in heat-stressed mid-lactation cows, reduce the number of somatic cells in milk and improve the mid-lactation cow performance. In addition, SC addition to the diet can raise serum urea levels, regulate serum hormone levels, boost antioxidant capacity in mid-lactation cows, and boost overall immunity.

Previous work demonstrated that arginine is one of the strongest insulin secretagogues. However, knowledge of the mechanisms linking chronic arginine metabolism with ß-cell function and insulin secretion is relatively limited. After preliminary selection of concentration according to the cell proliferation, the MIN6 pancreatic ß-cells were randomly assigned to culture in 0.04 mM (low-arginine, LA), 0.4 mM (standard-arginine, SA), or 8 mM arginine (high-arginine, HA) for 24 h. Following the treatment, a combination of transcriptomics and metabolomics, together with a series of molecular biological tests were performed to investigate the responses of ß-cells to varied arginine availability. Our results showed that HA treatment reduced the chronic insulin releases, and LA and HA treatments decreased the glucose-stimulated insulin secretions (GSIS) of ß-cells relative to the SA group (p < .05). Transcriptomics analysis indicated that LA administration significantly inhibited oxidative phosphorylation and ATP metabolic process but promoted DNA repair and mRNA processing in ß-cells, while HA administration affected ammonium ion metabolic process and mRNA export (p < .05). Both LA and HA regulated the expressions of genes involved in DNA replication, cell-cycle phase transition, and response to oxidative stress (p < .05). Protein-protein interaction and transcription factor analyses suggested that Trp53 and Nr4a2 genes may play key roles during arginine stimulation. On the contrary, metabolomics analysis demonstrated that the differentially expressed metabolites (DEM) of MIN6 ß-cells induced by LA were mainly enriched in glycerophospholipid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, and purine metabolism, while most DEMs between LA vs. SA comparison belonged to amino acid metabolism. When combined the three groups, co-expression analysis suggested that insulin secretions had strong associations with L-pyroglutamic acid, L-glutamate, and creatine concentrations, while intracellular insulin contents were mainly correlated to L-arginine, argininosuccinic acid, and phosphorylcholine. At last, integrated analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics showed that glycerophospholipid metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and amino acid metabolism were the most relevant pathways in ß-cells exposed to abnormal arginine supply. This descriptive bioinformatics analysis suggested that the disturbed carbohydrate, lipid, and amino acid metabolisms, as well as the increased apoptosis and elevated oxidative stress, contributed to the reduced insulin secretion and lower GSIS in ß-cells induced by LA or HA treatments, while some underlying mechanisms need to be further explored.

Background: Varicocele (VC) is present in 35 - 40% of men with infertility. However, current surgical and antioxidant treatments are not completely effective. In addition to oxidative stress, it is likely that other factors such as testicular immune microenvironment disorder contribute to irreversible testicular. Evidence suggests that VC is associated with anti-sperm antibodies (ASAs), spermatogenesis and testosterone secretion abnormalities, and testicular cytokine production. Moreover, inhibition of inflammation can alleviate VC-mediated pathogenesis. The normal function of the testis depends on its immune tolerance mechanism. Testicular immune regulation is complex, and many infectious or non-infectious diseases may damage this precision system. Results: The testicular immune microenvironment is composed of common immune cells and other cells involved in testicular immunity. The former includes testicular macrophages, T cells, dendritic cells (DCs), and mast cells, whereas the latter include Leydig cells and Sertoli cells (SCs). In animal models and in patients with VC, most studies have revealed an abnormal increase in the levels of ASAs and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in the seminal plasma, testicular tissue, and even peripheral blood. It is also involved in the activation of potential inflammatory pathways, such as the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing (NLRP)-3 pathway. Finally, the development of VC-mediated infertility (VMI) may be facilitated by abnormal permeability of proteins, such as claudin-11, that constitute the blood-testis barrier (BTB). Conclusions: The testicular immune response, including the production of ASAs and inflammatory factors, activation of inflammatory pathways, and destruction of the BTB may be involved in the pathogenesis of VMI it is necessary to further explore how patient outcomes can be improved through immunotherapy.

The fatigue strength of a component is known to highly depend on its surface quality, and it is thus necessary to develop a reliable and appropriate mathematical model for fatigue strength assessment that consider the effect of surface roughness. In this paper, different underlying physical mechanisms of the roughness effect at different regions of specimens were studied by fatigue testing of 7N01 aluminum alloy. For a quantitative analysis of the surface roughness effect, a revised stress field intensity approach for a fatigue strength assessment of microsized notches was proposed as a theoretical support. In the new model, a new form of weight function was built to adapt the characteristics of microsized notches. In addition, the effect of the field radius was fundamentally weakened on solution of the stress field intensity and the difficulty of fatigue failure region definition in the traditional method was overcome correspondingly in the proposed model, which made the calculated field strength accurate and objective. Finally, to demonstrate the validity of the revised approach quantitatively, specimens with conventionally sized notches were subjected to stress field intensity calculations. The results showed that the revised approach has satisfactory accuracy compared with the other two traditional approaches from the perspective of quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the second most common skin cancers in posttransplant patients. Long-term immunosuppression predisposes the patients to higher risk. This study was undertaken to develop a risk prediction model using the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Heart transplant recipients (2000~2015) from the UNOS database were analyzed. The Cox proportional hazards model was applied to screen the predictors associated with the development of BCC. Stepwise forward selection with Akaike information criterion was done to obtain the multivariate model. Area under the curve was derived from the receiver operating characteristics curve to assess the quality of the prediction model. A risk scoring system was developed to stratify patients into different risk groups, and the occurrence rates of posttransplant BCC among different groups were compared. RESULTS: There were 24,374 patients who received heart transplantation within this study period, and 1211 recipients have been reported with BCC. The multivariate model provides area under the curves at 5, 8, and 10 years posttransplant of 0.77, 0.76, and 0.76, respectively, in the derivation set and 0.75, 0.74, and 0.74, respectively, in the validation set. The predicted and observed probabilities of developing BCC in 5 years agree well across different risk groups. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated, which demonstrate significant differences between subjects in different risk groups. CONCLUSION: A risk prediction model has been generated for the first time for BCC with a c-statistic of ≥0.74 in both derivation and validation sets, making it a good tool for risk stratification.

BACKGROUND: Heart transplant recipients are at higher risk of developing skin cancer than the general population due to the long-term immunosuppression treatment. Cancer has been reported as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality for patients after heart transplantation. Among different types of skin cancers, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the most common one, which requires timely screening and better management. AIM: To identify risk factors and predict the incidence of cSCC for heart transplant recipients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed adult heart transplant recipients between 2000 and 2015 extracted from the United Network for Organ Sharing registry. The whole dataset was randomly divided into a derivation set (80%) and a validation set (20%). Uni- and multivariate Cox regression were done to identify significant risk factors associated with the development of cSCC. Receiver operating charac-teristics curves were generated and area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to assess the accuracy of the prediction model. Based on the selected risk factors, a risk scoring system was developed to stratify patients into different risk groups. A cumulative cSCC-free survival curve was generated using the Kaplan-Meier method for each group, and the log-rank test was done to compare the inter-group cSCC rates. RESULTS: There were 23736 heart-transplant recipients during the study period, and 1827 of them have been reported with cSCC. Significant predictors of post-transplant cSCC were older age, male sex, white race, recipient and donor human leukocyte antigen (HLA) mismatch level, malignancy at listing, diagnosis with restrictive myopathy or hypertrophic myopathy, heart re-transplant, and induction therapy with OKT3 or daclizumab. The multivariate model was used to predict the 5-, 8- and 10-year incidence of cSCC and respectively provided AUC of 0.79, 0.78 and 0.77 in the derivation set and 0.80, 0.78 and 0.77 in the validation set. The risk scoring system assigned each patient with a risk score within the range of 0-11, based on which they were stratified into 4 different risk groups. The predicted and observed 5-year probability of developing cSCC match well among different risk groups. In addition, the log-rank test indicated significantly different cSCC-free survival across different groups. CONCLUSION: A risk prediction model for cSCC among heart-transplant recipients has been generated for the first time. It offers a c-statistic of ≥ 0.77 in both derivation and validation sets.

A three-dimensionally interconnected molybdenum trioxide (MoO3)/polypyrrole (PPy)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite was synthesized via an eco-friendly three-step method. The as-obtained electrode shows a high specific capacity of 412.3 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 and a good cycling stability (85.1% of the initial specific capacitance after 6000 cycles at 2 A g-1 is retained), and these excellent electrochemical performances can be attributed to the unique structure, remarkable electrical conductivity, and the synergetic effects between MoO3, PPy, and rGO. Furthermore, a symmetric supercapacitor based on a MoO3/PPy/rGO electrode was assembled to investigate the practical application performance of this material. The results demonstrate a high energy density of 19.8 W h kg-1 at a power density of 301 W kg-1. These findings shine a light on the rational design of electrode materials with multicomponents for high-performance supercapacitors.

SRB is one of the main bacteria causing marine microbial corrosion. In order to reduce the loss of microbial corrosion, a Gemini surfactant (12-B-12) containing semi-rigid spacer was used to investigate the anti-bacterial and anti-corrosion performances of carbon steel in simulated seawater by weight-loss test, electrochemical method and surface morphology analysis. The results showed that the inhibition efficiency of 0.01 mM 12-B-12 was as high as 98.3% after 30 days of incubation in simulated seawater with SRB, and the planktonic and sessile SRB on the carbon steel surface can be reduced to undetectable level. Quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamics simulation were used to study the structure-activity relationship.

Reproductive tract infections contribute to the development of testicular inflammatory lesions, leading to male infertility. Previous research shows that the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in orchitis promotes the secretion and maturation of IL-1ß and, thus, decreases male fertility. The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is closely related to the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. An increase in the CaSR level promotes the assembly and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. However, the role of CaSRs in orchitis is unknown. We first constructed a uropathogenic Escherichia Coli (UPEC) rat orchitis model and then detected the expression of CaSR and NLRP3 inflammatory pathway proteins in testicular macrophages (TM) through RT-PCR and WB, calcium levels in TM through flow cytometry, and proinflammatory factor IL-1ß through ELISA. In addition, testosterone levels in the serum samples were detected using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Here, we show that CaSR upregulation after infection in TM in a rat model of UPEC induces the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway and thereby enhances IL-1ß secretion and reduces the testosterone level in the blood. Moreover, CaSR inhibitors can alleviate inflammatory impairment. After UPEC challenge in vitro, CaSR promoted NLRP3 expression and released IL-1ß cleaved from TM into the supernatant. Overall, elevated CaSR levels in TM in testes with UPEC-induced orchitis may impair testosterone synthesis through the activation of the NLRP3 pathway and PK2 is an upstream regulatory protein of CaSR. Our research further shows the underlying mechanisms of inflammation-related male infertility and provides anti-inflammatory therapeutic targets for male infertility.
