RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteophyte development is a common characteristic of inflammatory skeletal diseases. Elevated osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) participates in pathological osteogenesis. Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) positively regulates the osteoblastic differentiation of osteoprogenitors, but whether the ILK blockage prevents osteophytes and its potential mechanism is still unknown. Furthermore, the low-dose tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) promotes osteogenic differentiation, but a lack of study reports on the relationship between this cytokine and ILK. OSU-T315 is a small ILK inhibitor, which was used to determine the effect of ILK inhibition on osteogenesis and osteophyte formation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The osteogenesis of BMSCs was evaluated using Alizarin red S staining, alkaline phosphatase, collagen type I alpha 2 chain, and bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein. The expression and phosphorylation of protein were assessed through western blot. Immunofluorescence was employed to display the distribution of ß-catenin. microCT, hematoxylin-eosin, and safranin O/fast green staining were utilized to observe the osteophyte formation in collagen antibody-induced arthritis mice. We found that ILK blockage significantly declined calcium deposition and osteoblastic markers in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, it lowered osteogenesis in the TNF-α-induced inflammatory microenvironment by diminishing the effect of ILK and inactivating the Akt/ GSK-3ß/ ß-catenin pathway. Nuclear ß-catenin was descended by OSU-T315 as well. Finally, the ILK suppression restrained osteophyte formation but not inflammation in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: ILK inhibition lowered osteogenesis in TNF-α-related inflammatory conditions by deactivating the Akt/ GSK-3ß/ ß-catenin pathway. This may be a potential strategy to alleviate osteophyte development in addition to anti-inflammatory treatment.

RESUMO

Purpose: E-cigarettes (ECs) are gaining popularity among young people. This study aimed to assess university student vapers' search frequency and source credibility of commonly used media in China, and their association with daily EC users' motivation to quit EC use. Participants and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving an online quantitative survey in six universities in Chengdu, China. Participants answered questions on their EC use patterns, motivation to quit EC, use frequency and source credibility of media use. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to determine the association between media search frequency and source credibility concerning EC health information with the motivation to quit EC. Results: There were a total of 325 participants (Mean age = 20.43, SD = 1.333). Video platforms and social media were ranked frequently used by the participants and were deemed to be more trustworthy. Perceived trustworthiness of online media was the most influential predictor of motivation to quit EC. Those who reported a higher frequency of accessing video platforms and medical health applications recorded higher motivation to quit EC use. Source credibility of news portals were associated higher motivation to quit EC. The association between higher nicotine dependence and lower motivation to quit EC was attenuated when media source credibility and trustworthiness of online media were added into the fully adjusted regression models. Conclusion: There is an association between media use frequency and source credibility to search for EC health information and motivation to quit vaping. More studies could be conducted to examine the effects of media use content on perceptions towards vaping and their motivation to quit vaping.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: If a large amount of urate crystals is deposited in a joint cavity for an extended period of time, bone erosion will occur and gradually cause skeletal muscle necrosis and joint deformity. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and factors associated with bone erosion in gout patients with tophi. METHODS: A total of 210 gout patients with tophi were enrolled and divided into a bone erosion group (n = 135) and a non-bone erosion group (n = 75). Digital radiography (DR) was performed to detect bone erosion in the elbow, wrist, knee, ankle joints, interphalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints. The clinical characteristics were recorded and compared between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the factors associated with bone erosion. RESULTS: Compared with the non-bone erosion group, the bone erosion group had an older age, longer disease duration of gout and tophi, higher level of serum creatinine (sCr), higher proportion of drinking history and ulceration, and a lower glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Univariate logistic regression analysis results showed that sex, age, body mass index (BMI), gout duration, tophi duration, GFR, white blood cell (WBC) count, sCr level, smoking history, drinking history, and presence of ulceration were associated with bone destruction. Multivariable logistic regression analysis results indicated that tophi duration, drinking history, ulceration and sCr were positively and independently related to bone erosion. CONCLUSIONS: Tophi patients with bone erosion presented different clinical characteristics. Tophi duration, drinking history, ulceration and sCr were associated with bone erosion in gout patients with tophi.

RESUMO

To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a new modified MR dual precision positioning of thin-slice oblique sagittal fat suppression proton density-weighted imaging (DPP-TSO-Sag-FS-PDWI) sequence in detecting ACL injuries and its grades compared to standard sequences using arthroscopy as the standard reference. 42 patients enrolled in this retrospective study received the 1.5-T MRI with standard sequences and the new modified DPP-TSO-Sag-FS-PDWI sequence, and their arthroscopy results was recorded. The Mc Nemer-Bowker and weighted Kappa was performed to compare the consistency of MRI diagnosis with arthroscopic results. Finally, the diagnostic accuracy was calculated based on the true positive, true negative, false negative and false positive values. The diagnostic consistency of the DPP-TSO-Sag-FS-PDWI were higher than standard sequences for both reader 1 (K = 0.876 vs. 0.620) and reader 2 (K = 0.833 vs. 0.683) with good diagnostic repeatability (K = 0.794 vs. 0.598). Furthermore, the DPP-TSO-Sag-FS-PDWI can classify and diagnose three grades of ACL injury [the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value were more than 84%], especially for grade II injury as the PPV was superior for reader 1 (92.3% vs. 53.9%) and reader 2 (84.6% vs. 69.2%). The new modified DPP-TSO-Sag-FS-PDWI sequence can display the ACL injury on one or continuous levels by maximizing the acquisition of complete ligament shape and true anatomical images, and excluding the influence of anatomical differences between individuals. It can improve the diagnostic accuracy with good repeatability and classify three grades of the ACL injury.

RESUMO

This study explores the coordination dynamics between dietary polyphenols, specifically kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin, and Cu ions in aqueous environments. A novel synthesis method for flavonol-Cu(II) coordination compounds is introduced, effectively reducing interference from free metal ions. Our results reveal consistent binding patterns of Cu ions with flavonols (2:1 ratio of flavonol to Cu(II)), predominantly at the 4,5 sites. Various analytical techniques are used to validate these coordination ratios and sites. The binding affinity of the flavonols for Cu ions follows a descending sequence: myricetin > quercetin > kaempferol. Notably, coordination with Cu ions enhances the free-radical scavenging activities of these flavonols. These findings hold substantial importance for food chemistry, biology, and medicine, providing crucial insights into the way dietary flavonols form stable structures in environments similar to human body fluids and their interactions with metal ions, opening new possibilities for their application and understanding in diverse scientific domains.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: For identification of aberrantly expressed genes in mesenchymal stem cells of osteoporosis (OP) and osteoarthritis (OA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets were integrated to investigate the intersection point. METHODS: GSE35958 (osteoporosis) and GSE19664 (osteoarthritis) datasets were obtained from GEO database. The abnormally expressed genes were analyzed by GEO2R. Functional enrichment was explored by Metascape database and R software. The String database and Cytoscape software were used to build the protein-protein interaction network and identify hub genes. GSE35957 and GSE116925 were used as verification datasets. Single-cell analysis and pseudotime analysis were undertaken. CTDbase, Network Analyst, HPA database, HERB database and MIRW database were used to research the information, tissue and cell distribution, regulation, interaction and ingredients targeting the hub genes. Additionally, in vitro experiments such as RT-PCR, ALP staining and immunofluorescence were undertaken as verification tests. RESULTS: Ten hub genes were identified in this study. All these genes play an important role in bone or cartilage generation. They have diagnostic values and therapeutic potential for OA and OP. Single-cell analysis visualized the cell distribution and pseudotime distribution of these genes. Some potential therapeutic ingredients of these genes were identified, such as curcumin, wogonin and glycerin. In vitro experiments, RT-PCR results showed that COL9A3 and MMP3 were downregulated and PTH1R was upregulated during osteogenic induction of BMSC. Immunohistochemical results showed the expression trend of MMP3 and COL2A1. CONCLUSION: Ten abnormal hub genes of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis were identified successfully by this study. They were important regulatory genes for healthy bone and cartilage. These genes could be the common connections between osteoporosis and osteoarthritis as well as treatment targets. Further study of the regulatory mechanism and treatment effects of these genes would be valuable. The results of this study could contribute to further research.

RESUMO

Molecular behavior of rhamnolipid mixed with a biobased zwitterionic surfactant at an n-hexadecane/water interface has been studied, and the effects of a rhamnose moiety and composition are evaluated. Results showed that rhamnolipid abundantly interacts with biobased surfactant EAB by means of hydrophobic interactions between aliphatic tails and electrostatic interactions between headgroups, including the attractive interaction between COO- of rhamnolipids and N+ of biobased surfactants and the repulsive interaction between COO- of both surfactants. Dirhamnolipid has a larger number of bound Na+ and a more stable bound structure of COO- ∼ Na+, which screens the repulsive interaction between two kinds of surfactants and shows a more homogeneous distribution with biobased surfactants. The interfacial tension between n-hexadecane and water has been synergistically reduced by dirhamnolipids mixed with biobased surfactants at a higher molar ratio of biobased surfactants. Monorhamnolipids show a strengthened interaction with N+ of biobased surfactants and a more stable hydrogen bond with water relative to that of dirhamnolipids, and there is no synergistic effect in lowering the interfacial tension for the mixture of monorhamnolipids and biobased surfactants. The present work provides details of the molecular behavior of biosurfactant rhamnolipids mixed with biobased surfactants and obtains the key factor in affecting the interfacial properties of the binary system.

RESUMO

Food-derived α-glucosidase inhibitory peptides have gained significant interest in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) owing to their favorable safety profiles. Molecular docking combined with molecular dynamics simulation was performed to screen α-glucosidase inhibitory peptides from Ginkgo biloba seed cake (GBSC), and two novel peptides (Met-Pro-Gly-Pro-Pro (MPGPP) and Phe-Ala-Pro-Ser-Trp (FAPSW)) were acquired. The results of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation suggested that FAPSW and MPGPP could generate stable complexes with 3wy1, and the electrostatic and van der Waals forces played contributory roles in FAPSW and MPGPP binding to 3wy1. The α-glucosidase inhibition assay corroborated that FAPSW and MPGPP had good α-glucosidase inhibition capacity, with IC50 values of 445.34 ± 49.48 and 1025.68 ± 140.78 µM, respectively. In vitro simulated digestion results demonstrated that FAPSW and MPGPP strongly resisted digestion. These findings lay a theoretical foundation for FAPSW and MPGPP in treating T2DM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus poses a substantial threat to public health due to rising morbidity and mortality. α-Glucosidase is one of the key enzymes affecting diabetes. Herein, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) were applied to clarify the role of the galloyl moiety of tea polyphenols in the inhibition of glycation and α-glucosidase activity. The structure-activity relationship of the galloyl moiety in EGCG on α-glucosidase was investigated in terms of inhibition kinetics, spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and molecular docking. A bovine serum protein-fructose model was employed to determine the effect of the galloyl moiety on glycation. RESULTS: The results indicated that the introduction of a galloyl moiety enhanced the capacity of EGCG to inhibit glycation and α-glucosidase activity. The IC50 value of EGC is approximately 2400 times higher than that of EGCG. Furthermore, the galloyl moiety in EGCG altered the microenvironment and secondary structure of α-glucosidase, resulting in a high binding affinity of EGCG to α-glucosidase. The binding constant of EGCG to α-glucosidase at 298 K is approximately 28 times higher than that of EGC. CONCLUSION: Overall, the galloyl moiety of EGCG plays a crucial role in inhibiting glycation and α-glucosidase activity, which helps to enhance the molecular understanding of the structure and function of the polyphenol galloyl moiety in the science of food and agriculture. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Investigation of edible oil stability involves interactions between additive polyphenols and the inherent tocopherols. The work aimed to identify endogenous polyphenols to produce the synergistic effect with α-tocopherol in olive oil and to find the right action ratio. Caffeic acid and quercetin were selected from the 15 main endogenous phenolic compounds in olive oil. Quercetin had the strongest synergistic effect with α-tocopherol at 2:1 in the olive oil model. The rate of 2:1 also was the turning point of the change of synergism. Furthermore, the addition of quercetin and α-tocopherol at 2:1 to olive oil resulted in lower POV, K232, K270, and secondary oxidation products such as (E, E)-2,4-decadienal and 2-pentylfuran than the olive oil model with a single antioxidant in three months of accelerated oxidation. The dynamic changes of antioxidants during oxidation in olive oil indicated that their synergistic effect was the repair and regeneration of α-tocopherol by quercetin.

RESUMO

Microbial remediation has been regarded as one of the most promising decontamination techniques for crude oil pollution. However, there are few studies on the interaction of bacteria in the microbial community during bioremediation. The aim of this work was to research the promotion of defined co-culture of Bacillus subtilis SL and Pseudomonas aeruginosa WJ-1 for biodegradation of crude oil. After 7 days of incubation, the analysis of residual oil, saturated and aromatic fraction in the samples showed that the degradation efficiency of them was significantly improved. The degradation efficiency of crude oil was enhanced from 32.61% and 54.35% in individual culture to 63.05% by the defined co-culture of strains SL and WJ-1. Furthermore, it was found that the defined co-culture system represented relatively excellent performance in bacterial growth, cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) and emulsification activity. These results indicated that the combination of Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa can effectively promote the degradation and utilization of crude oil, which may provide a new idea for the improvement of bioremediation strategies. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The classical approaches for total hip arthroplasty (THA) are the direct lateral approach (DLA) and posterior lateral approach (PLA). There are few studies comparing implant orientation with these two approaches, and the impact of surgical approaches on implant orientation remains controversial. With the rise of the EOS imaging system, we aimed to use it to identify the differences between and factors associated with implant orientation after THA using DLA and PLA. METHODS: In our department from January 2019 to December 2021, 321 primary unilateral THAs that used PLA and DLA were enrolled. A total of 201 patients who received PLA and 120 patients who received DLA were included in this study. Two blinded observers measured each case using EOS imaging data. Postoperative imaging metrics and other relevant influencing factors of the two surgical approaches were compared. Postoperative imaging metrics, including the anteversion and inclination of the cup, anteversion of the stem, and combined anteversion were measured based on EOS. Other relevant influencing factors included age, approach, gender, laterality, BMI, anterior pelvic plane inclination, femoral head diameter, femoral offset, lateral pelvic tilt, pelvic incidence, pelvis axial rotation, sacral slope, sagittal pelvic tilt, and surgery time. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify the predictors of acceptability for each imaging data point. RESULTS: No dislocation was found in the 321 patients who underwent primary THA during this period. The mean anteversion and combined anteversion of the cups using the DLA were 21.33° ± 17.31° (-51.7°-60.8°) and 33.71° ± 20.85° (-38.8°-77.6°) and PLA were 25.34° ± 12.76° (-5.5°-57.0°) and 42.37° ± 18.85° (-8.7°-84.7°), respectively. The DLA group had smaller anteversion (p = 0.038) and combined anteversion (p < 0.001). We found that surgical approach (p < 0.05), anterior pelvic plane inclination (p < 0.001), gender (p < 0.001), and femoral head diameter (p < 0.001) were important factors affecting acetabular cup anteversion (R2 = 0.375) and combined anteversion (R2 = 0.525). CONCLUSIONS: In total hip arthroplasty, different prosthesis installation directions should be made according to different surgical approaches. Compared with the direct lateral approach, the acetabular anteversion can be intentionally enlarged when using the posterolateral approach. Surgical approach, anterior pelvic plane inclination (APPI), gender, and femoral head diameter were significant predictors of prosthesis orientation. The anterior pelvic plane inclination may be a useful standard for assessing the position of the prosthesis using EOS.

RESUMO

Osteolysis caused by wear debris around the prosthesis is the main reason for aseptic loosening. Extending prosthetic service life is still challenging. In this study, we first synthesized a bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) functional polypeptide (BMP2pp), and evaluated the effects of BMP2pp on macrophage polarization and impaired osteogenesis caused by titanium (Ti) particles in vitro. Then, we delineated the impact of BMP2pp on bone formation and resorption in a mouse calvarial bone osteolysis model induced by Ti particles. The results showed that BMP2pp not only alleviated the Ti-induced inhibition of osteoblastic differentiation in human placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hPMSCs) but also prevented Ti-induced M1 macrophage polarization and promoted M2 macrophage differentiation in mice. Conditioned medium from BMP2pp-activated macrophages increased the osteogenesis of hPMSCs. The western blot results indicated a significant decrease in the expression of NF-κB inducing kinase (NIK) and phospho-NF-κB p65 in bone marrow-derived macrophages treated with BMP2pp. Furthermore, we clarified the protective effect of BMP2pp on bone formation and the reduction in bone resorption coupled with the immunomodulatory properties of calvarial osteolysis in mice. In summary, BMP2pp ameliorated the Ti-mediated impairment in osteogenic potential of hPMSCs, suppressed the M1 polarization of macrophages by inhibiting the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, and ameliorated Ti-induced bone osteolysis. Our research suggests that BMP2pp may be a potential option for treating prosthetic loosening induced by wear debris from prostheses.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the antiglycation activity and mechanism of two identified peptides, Valine-Valine-Phenylalanine-Proline-Glycine-Cysteine-Proline-Glutamic acid (VVFPGCPE) and Serine-Valine-Aspartic acid-Aspartic acid-Proline-Arginine-Threonine-Lysine (SVDDPRTL), from Ginkgo biloba seeds protein hydrolysates. Both VVFPGCPE and SVDDPRTL were efficient in bovine serum albumin (BSA)-methylglyoxal (MGO) model to inhibit BSA glycation, while VVFPGCPE showed higher antiglycation activity than SVDDPRTL. In antioxidant assays, VVFPGCPE scavenged more hydroxyl and super anion radicals, and chelated more Fe2+. Moreover, VVFPGCPE was more efficient in alleviating glycoxidation since it retained higher content of tryptophan and reduced dityrosine and kynurenine generation. Compared with SVDDPRTL, VVFPGCPE showed better performance in inhibiting protein aggregation and amyloid-like fibrillation formation. Therefore, VVFPGCPE was selected for further mechanism study. The circular dichroism analysis suggested VVFPGCPE could preserve α-helix structure and stabilize protein structure. The MGO trapping assay indicated VVFPGCPE (5 mg/mL) could capture 66.25% MGO within 24 h, and the mass spectrometry revealed VVFPGCPE could trap MGO by forming VVFPGCPE-mono-MGO adducts. Besides, molecular simulations suggested VVFPGCPE could interact with key glycation residues, arginine and lysine residues, of BSA mainly through van der Waals and hydrogen bonds. This study might supply a theoretical basis for the development of VVFPGCPE as an effective antiglycation agent.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The application of wedge-shaped bone grafts can increase the biomechanical stability of knee during the medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) by reducing the von Mises stress of the medial plate and lateral cortical hinge area. However, the optimal position of bone grafts it remains unclear, so we aimed to determine search for the optimal position of the bone grafts in MOWHTO by using finite element analysis. METHODS: In the finite element analysis, MOWHTO models were established with three different osteotomy distraction heights and assembled into four groups according to different conditions, including the no bone grafts (NBG) group, the anterior bone grafts (ABG) group, the middle bone grafts (MBG) group, and the posterior bone grafts (PBG) group. Based on previous studies, 600 N and 1800 N loads were applied to the knee joint to simulate the static forces during a double and single leg stance to measure the von Mises stress of the medial implant area and lateral hinge area, the maximum displacement of different models, the relative displacement of the osteotomy area and the stress distribution in the bone grafts. RESULTS: Compared to the NBG and ABG groups, the stress of the lateral cortical hinge area and the medial implate area was significantly lower in the PBG group. For example, under the 600N force load, when the height of the osteotomy area was 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm, the maximum von Mises stress of the medial implate area and lateral cortical hinge area in the NBG group were 140, 141, 172, and 53, 57, 60 MPa, respectively. Compared with the NBG group, the maximum von Mises stress of the medial implate area and lateral cortical hinge area in the PBG group were reduced by 45%, 56%, 63% and 14%, 39%, 68% at distraction height of 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm, respectively. The bone grafts in the posterior parts provide the best stability, with the stress of the middle and posterior bone grafts are mainly concentrated in the edge. CONCLUSIONS: The posterior part of the osteotomy area is the best position for bone graft placement since it provides optimal stability and reduces von Mises stress in the medial plate and lateral cortex hinge area, with the stress of the posterior bone grafts mainly concentrated in the edge. These findings guide bone graft placement sites in clinical surgery and are a basis for future research on bone graft materials and structures in MOWHTO.

RESUMO

The inhibition of α-glucosidase activity has been recognized as an effective approach for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In recent years, much emphasis has been placed on identifying peptides with α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and elucidating the mechanisms underlying their inhibitory effect in treating T2DM. This study aims to identify peptides with good α-glucosidase inhibitory activity from the hydrolysate of ginkgo biloba seed cake protein isolate (GCPI) using in silico screening. It was found that the hydrolysate from Alcalase exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase (IC50 12.94 ± 0.37 mg/mL). Three novel peptides with α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, i.e., Leu-Ser-Met-Ser-Phe-Pro-Pro-Phe (LSMSFPPF), Val-Pro-Lys-Ile-Pro-Pro-Pro (VPKIPPP) and Met-Pro-Gly-Pro-Pro-Ser-Asp (MPGPPSD), were further identified from the hydrolysate of Alcalase by in silico screening. LSMSFPPF exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity (IC50 454.33 ± 32.45 µM), followed by MPGPPSD (IC50 943.82 ± 73.10 µM) and VPKIPPP (IC50 1446.81 ± 66.98 µM). The pharmacophore model revealed that hydrogen bonds played a critical role in α-glucosidase inhibition.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preoperative identification of intramuscular hemangioma (IMH) subtypes (capillary hemangioma, cavernous hemangioma, and mixed hemangioma) is urgently necessary. Enhanced T2*-weighted angiography (ESWAN) is sensitive to vessels and metabolites and can be used to diagnose IMH subtypes. PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic performances of ESWAN and conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of IMH subtypes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 23 patients with IMHs were examined using conventional MRI and ESWAN. The signal intensity ratios (SIRs) of conventional MRI and ESWAN were measured. RESULTS: There was no significant difference for volume among the three subtypes (P = 0.124, P = 0.145). Various shapes and MRI signals were shown in the three subtypes of IMH. There was no significant difference for SIRs of conventional MRI (P = 0.558, P = 0.259, P = 0.385, P = 0.347). However, there was a significant difference for SIRs of ESWAN parameters (P = 0.050, P < 0.001, P = 0.005, P = 0.002). Capillary hemangiomas can be diagnosed when R2* SIR is <0.912 and intratumoral susceptibility signal (ITSS) percentage is <29.085%. Cavernous hemangiomas should be considered when R2* SIR is >0.912, ITSS percentage >35.226%, and phase SIR >2.536. In addition, mixed hemangiomas should be considered when T2* SIR is >0.662 and R2* SIR <1.618. CONCLUSION: Conventional MRI can only display the volume, shape, and signal of IMHs. 3D-MinIP imaging of ESWAN can show the veins and minor hemorrhage. SIRs of ESWAN parameters including T2* value, R2* value, phase value, and percentage of ITSS can be used to quantitatively diagnose capillary hemangiomas, cavernous hemangiomas, and mixed hemangiomas.

RESUMO

Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), characterized with the virtues of low cost and environmental protection, reflects the prevalent belief in environmental protection, and is attracting the attention of more researchers. Nonetheless, with the prolonged slump in global oil prices, how to further reduce the cost of MEOR has become a key factor in its development. This paper described the recent development of MEOR technology in terms of mechanisms, mathematical models, and field application, meanwhile the novel technologies of MEOR such as genetically engineered microbial enhanced oil recovery (GEMEOR) and enzyme enhanced oil recovery (EEOR) were introduced. The paper proposed three possible methods to decrease the cost of MEOR: using inexpensive nutrients as substrates, applying a mixture of chemical and biological agents, and utilizing crude microbial products. Additionally, in order to reduce the uncertainty in the practical application of MEOR technology, it is essential to refine the reservoir screening criteria and establish a sound mathematical model of MEOR. Eventually, the paper proposes to combine genetic engineering technology and microbial hybrid culture technology to build a microbial consortium with excellent oil displacement efficiency and better environmental adaptability. This may be a vital part of the future research on MEOR technology, which will play a major role in improving its economic efficiency and practicality.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol gifting is a very common practice in China. However, little is known about the potentially adverse consequences of alcohol gifting. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of, and factors associated with, alcohol gifting, and explore whether drinking and tobacco use were associated with alcohol gifting. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional multi-stage survey, a sample of 982 household heads from Guangdong Province and 530 household heads from Shaanxi Province was collected online from 30 April to 30 July 2020 in China. Participants completed questionnaires regarding socio-demographic characteristics, social capital, drinking status, and gifting alcohol behavior. Chi-square analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to identify the factors associated with alcohol gifting, and to identify its relationship with alcohol and cigarette use status. RESULTS: Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that age, gender, household annual income, province, drinking status, and social participation were prominent correlates of both offering and receiving alcohol. Participants who were married, had an education level of junior high school, or had a large social network had higher odds of receiving alcohol. When both alcohol gifting behaviors were included in the models, participants who offered alcohol had 2.15 (95% CI: 1.63-2.85) times higher odds of current drinking than those who didn't offer alcohol and participants who received alcohol had 1.87 (95% CI: 1.45-2.41) times higher odds of current drinking than those who did not receive alcohol. Those who received alcohol had significantly higher odds of current smoking (AOR = 1.64; 95% CI: 1.25-2.14), while those who offered alcohol had significantly lower odds of current smoking (AOR = 0.71;95% CI:0.53-0.95). CONCLUSIONS: Social participation is an important correlate of alcohol gifting. Alcohol receiving behaviors were significantly associated with both current alcohol and tobacco use. These associations can be used to inform alcohol gifting interventions in China.

RESUMO

Objective: To review the research progress of intra-articular targeted delivery of nanomaterials in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: The domestic and foreign related literature on intra-articular targeted delivery of nanomaterials for the treatment of OA was extensively reviewed, and their targeting strategies were discussed and summarized. Results: Rapid drug clearance from the joint remains a critical limitation in drug efficacy. Nanocarriers can not only significantly improve the residence profiles of drugs in the joint, but also achieve targeted delivery of drugs to specific joint tissues through active or passive targeting strategies. Conclusion: With the continuous development of various emerging tissue- or cell-specific drugs, the targeted delivery of drugs with nanomaterials promise to realize the clinical translation of these drugs in the treatment of OA.
