RESUMO

Patients presenting with large ventral abdominal wall hernias require pretreatment with injection botulinum toxin A before surgery. Currently, multipoint and multilayered botulinum injection techniques are practiced. We are describing a new ultrasound-guided, 1-point, single interfascial plane botulinum toxin A injection technique for the closure of big hernial defects.

RESUMO

Background Since bilateral nasal packing entails nasal and airway obstruction, this practice consequently leads to oral breathing. The resulting hypoxemia may then negatively impact vital signs, including blood pressure (BP), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and heart rate (HR). These systemic effects have a detrimental effect on patients. Objective The objective of this study is to observe the effects of bilateral nasal packing on patients' post-operative vital signs. Materials and methods This prospective study was conducted in the department of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery over a six-month period. The study included 83 post-operative patients with nasal surgery, in which bilateral merocele nasal packing was performed. The patients' pulse oximetry, systolic and diastolic BP, and HR were recorded four times the night before and after surgery. A statistical analysis was performed, and the mean values, standard deviation, and range were calculated. A paired sample t-test was also applied. The results are presented in figures and tables. Results The mean age of the participants was 27.65 ± 10.72 years, and 56 (67.5%) were male. Septoplasty was the most common surgery performed, with 63 participants having undergone this procedure (75.9%). When the pre-operative mean values of systolic and diastolic BP, SpO2, and HR were compared with the post-operative mean values, when a bilateral nasal pack was in place, a significant increase was found in all, with a p-value of <0.001 in each. Conclusion Bilateral nasal packing affects patients' vital signs by significantly increasing diastolic and systolic BP and decreasing SpO2. The HR is also significantly increased when packing is in place.

RESUMO

Due to the commonly low content of biomarkers in diseases, increasing the sensitivity of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems is of great significance for in vitro ECL diagnosis and biodetection. Although dissolved O2 (DO) has recently been considered superior to H2O2 as a coreactant in the most widely used luminol ECL systems owing to its improved stability and less biotoxicity, it still has unsatisfactory ECL performance because of its ultralow reactivity. In this study, an effective plasmonic luminol-DO ECL system has been developed by complexing luminol-capped Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with plasma-treated Fe single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) embedded in graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) (pFe-g-CN). Under optimal conditions, the performance of the resulting ECL system could be markedly increased up to 1300-fold compared to the traditional luminol-DO system. Further investigations revealed that duple binding sites of pFe-g-CN and plasmonically induced hot holes that disseminated from AgNPs to g-CN surfaces lead to facilitate significantly the luminous reaction process of the system. The proposed luminol-DO ECL system was further employed for the stable and ultrasensitive detection of prostate-specific antigen in a wide linear range of 1.0 fg/mL to 1 µg/mL, with a pretty low limit of detection of 0.183 fg/mL.

RESUMO

Heterodimers of metal nanocrystals (NCs) with tailored elemental distribution have emerged as promising candidates in the field of electrocatalysis, owing to their unique structures featuring heterogeneous interfaces with distinct components. Despite this, the rational synthesis of heterodimer NCs with similar elemental composition remains a formidable challenge, and their impact on electrocatalysis has remained largely elusive. In this study, Pd@Bi-PdBi heterodimer NCs are synthesized through an underpotential deposition (UPD)-directed growth pathway. In this pathway, the UPD of Bi promotes a Volmer-Weber growth mode, allowing for judicious modulation of core-satellite to heterodimer structures through careful control of supersaturation and growth kinetics. Significantly, the heterodimer NCs are employed in the electrocatalytic process of ethylene glycol (EG) with high activity and selectivity. Compared with pristine Pd octahedra and common PdBi alloy NC, the unique heterodimer structure of the Pd@Bi-PdBi heterodimer NCs endows them with the highest electrocatalytic performance of EG and the best selectivity (≈93%) in oxidizing EG to glycolic acid (GA). Taken together, this work not only heralds a new strategy for UPD-directed synthesis of bimetallic NCs, but also provides a new design paradigm for steering the selectivity of electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

In recent years, the energy crisis has made the world realize the importance and need for green energy. Hydrogen safety has always been a primary issue that needs to be addressed for the application and large-scale commercialization of hydrogen energy, and precise and rapid hydrogen gas sensing technology and equipment are important prerequisites for ensuring hydrogen safety. Based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS), resistive hydrogen gas sensors (HGS) offer advantages, such as low cost, low power consumption, and high sensitivity. They are also easy to test, integrate, and suitable for detecting low concentrations of hydrogen gas in ambient air. Therefore, they are considered one of the most promising HGS. This article provides a comprehensive review of the surface reaction mechanisms and recent research progress in optimizing the gas sensing performance of MOS-based resistive hydrogen gas sensors (MOS-R-HGS). Particularly, the advancements in metal-assisted or doped MOS, mixed metal oxide (MO)-MOS composites, MOS-carbon composites, and metal-organic framework-derived (MOF)-MOS composites are extensively summarized. Finally, the future research directions and possibilities in this field are discussed.

RESUMO

Introduction Tracheostomy, although a common surgical procedure, is associated with potential complications. Complications can be avoided with accurate technique and proper operative and postoperative care. A surgeon should know the complications of the procedure and how to avoid them so that complications may be prevented or minimized. Objective To determine the frequency of complications in patients undergoing elective and emergency tracheostomies. Methods The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of PIMS Hospital, Islamabad, from March 1 to August 31, 2023, with a total duration of six months. A total of 110 patients admitted to the ICU and presented in an emergency falling within the inclusion criteria were counted in the study. Patients were split into two groups, i.e., elective tracheostomy (group A) and emergency tracheostomy (group B). All patients were followed for three months for adverse events related to the tracheostomy. All information was collected on Proforma and analyzed using the SPSS 23 version (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results The mean age of participants was 48.47±12.68 years in group A and 49.54±10.99 years in group B (p=0.636). 40 (72.7%) and 37 (67.3%) patients were male and 15 (27.3%) and 18 (32.7%) female in groups A and B, respectively. The results of post-operative complications in both groups A and B were observed, respectively, for surgical emphysema (2 [3.6%] vs. 5 [9.1%], p=0.241), hemorrhage (2 [3.6%] vs. 4 [7.3%], p=0.401), wound infection (3 [3.6%] vs. 6 [10.9%], p=0.279), tube blockage (0 [0.0%] vs. 1 [1.8%], p=0.315), tube displacement (0 [0.0%] vs. 3 [5.5%], p=0.079), and tracheoesophageal fistula (0 [0.0%] vs. 2 [3.6%], p=0.154). The overall complications in elective tracheostomies were 7 (12.7%) and in emergency tracheostomies were 21 (38.2%). Conclusion We concluded that patients who had an emergency tracheostomy experienced more postoperative complications than those who underwent an elective tracheostomy.

RESUMO

Environmental and health monitoring requires low-cost, high-performance diethylamine (DEA) sensors. Materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can detect hazardous gases due to their large specific surface area, many metal sites, unsaturated sites, functional connectivity, and easy calcination to remove the scaffold. However, developing facile materials with high sensitivity and selectivity in harsh environments for accurate DEA detection at a low detection limit (LOD) at room temperature (RT) is challenging. In this study, p-type semiconducting porous CuOx sensing materials were synthesized using a simple solvothermal process and annealed in an argon atmosphere at three different temperatures (x = 400, 600, and 800 °C). Significant variations in particle size, specific area, crystallite size, and shape were noticed when the annealing temperature was elevated. Cu-MIL-53 annealed at 400 °C (CuO-400) has a typical nanoellipsoid (NEs) shape with a length of 61.5 nm and a diameter of 33.2 nm. Surprisingly, CuO-400 NEs showed an excellent response to DEA with an ultra-LOD (Rg/Ra = 7.3 @ 100 ppb, 55% relative humidity), excellent selectivity and sensitivity (Rg/Ra = 236 @ 15 ppm), exceptional long-term stability and repeatability, and a fast response/recovery period at RT, outperforming most previously reported materials. CuO-400 NEs have outstanding gas-sensing characteristics due to their high porosity, 1D nanostructure, unsaturated Cu sites (Cu+ and Cu2+), large specific surface area, and numerous oxygen vacancies. This study presents a generic approach to produce future CuO derived from Cu-MOFs-sensitive materials, revealing new insights into the design of effective sensors for environmental monitoring at RT.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal sensing materials due to their distinctive morphologies, high surface area, and simple calcination to remove sacrificial MOF scaffolds. Oxygen vacancies (Ovs) can be efficiently generated by the thermal annealing of metal oxides in an inert atmosphere. Herein, MIL-53-based Fe and Fe/Ni-MOFs nanorices (NRs) were first prepared by using a solvothermal method, and then one-dimensional (1D) Fe2O3 and Ni0.4Fe2.6O4 NRs were derived from the MOFs after calcination at 350 °C in an air and argon (Ar) atmosphere, respectively. It was found that Ar-annealed Ni0.4Fe2.6O4 NRs have higher Ovs concentrations (82.11%) and smaller NRs (24.3 nm) than air-annealed NRs (65.68% & 31.5 nm). Beneficially, among the synthesized NRs, the Ar-Ni0.4Fe2.6O4 NRs show a higher sensitivity to diethylamine (DEA) (Ra/Rg = 23 @ 5 ppm, 175 °C), low detection limit (Ra/Rg = 1.2 @ 200 ppb), wide dynamic response (Ra/Rg = 93.5@ 30 ppm), high stability (30 days), and faster response/recovery time (4 s/38 s). Moreover, the 1D nanostructure containing heterostructures offers excellent sensing selectivity and a wide detection range from 200 ppb to 30 ppm in the presence of DEA. The outstanding gas sensing behavior can be attributable to synergistic impact, structural advantages, high concentration of Ovs, and the heterojunction interface, which can have profound effects on gas sensor performance. This study provides a unique technique for constructing high-performance gas sensors for ppb-level DEA detection and the formation of Ovs in metal oxides without the need for any additives.

RESUMO

As an effective approach for materials synthesis, bipolar electrochemistry has been earning a renewed interest nowadays thanks to its unique features compared to conventional electrochemistry. Indeed, the wireless mode of electrode reactions and the generation of a gradient potential distribution above the bipolar electrode are among the most appealing qualities of bipolar electrochemistry. In particular, the gradient potential distribution is a highly attractive characteristic for the fabrication of surfaces with gradients in their chemical properties or molecular functionalities. Herein, we report the high-throughput electrosynthesis of gradient polypyrrole films by means of a new electrochemical cell design named the single-electrode electrochemical system (SEES). SEESs are made by attaching an inert plastic board with holes onto an indium tin oxide electrode, constructing multiple microelectrochemical cells on the same electrode. This type of arrangement enables parallel electrochemical reactions to be carried out simultaneously and controlled in a contactless manner by a single electrode. Several experimental conditions for polypyrrole film growth were extensively investigated. Furthermore, the gradient property of the polymer films was evaluated by thickness determination, surface morphology analysis, and contact angle measurements. The use of SEES has been demonstrated as a convenient and cost-effective strategy for high-throughput electrosynthesis and electroanalytical applications and has opened up a new door for gradient film preparation via a rapid condition screening process.

RESUMO

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether serial intra-articular (IA) Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections improve pain and function in patients of Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) Grade IV primary knee osteoarthritis (KOA), not willing for arthroplasty or having relative contraindications to surgery. Methods: 90 patients (84 available at final follow-up) of Grade IV KOA were given 3 PRP or Normal Saline injections at 1-month interval. Pain and functional assessment was done with Visual analog scale (VAS) and Western Ontario and McMaster universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC) respectively, at baseline and then at three and six months of follow-up. Both groups were homogenous with similar baseline characteristics. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in the outcome scores but only PRP showed minimal clinically important difference (25% in WOMAC and > 2 cm difference of mean in VAS at follow-up). For inter-group comparison, PRP showed better results as there was statistically significant difference in WOMAC at 3 months (Difference = - 9.220, 95% CI = - 13.1945 to - 5.2455, P < 0.0001) and at 6 months (Difference = - 10.360, 95% CI = - 14.5358 to - 6.1842, P < 0.0001). Similar results were seen for VAS also (Difference = - 0.580, 95% CI = - 1.1412 to - 0.0188, P = 0.04 at 3 months, Difference = - 0.870, 95% CI - 1.3993 to - 0.3407, P = 0.001 at 6 months). Outcome scores significantly correlated with age and sex but not with body mass index (BMI). Conclusion: Serial Intra-articular Injections of autologous PRP mildly improve short-term subjective pain and knee function scores in patients of Grade IV KOA without any major complications.

RESUMO

Semiconductor metal-oxide materials have a high surface-to-volume ratio and many active sites, making them potentially useful for gas sensing. Dopants introduced into the lattice can improve the catalytic activity of oxides and promote the formation of oxygen vacancies, hence improving the sensing performance of the materials. However, the simple preparation of materials with high sensitivity, selectivity, and a low detection limit remains a challenge. Herein, we report on the synthesis of Ni-P2O5/MoO3 and Pd-doped Ni-P2O5/MoO3 hollow polyhedral heterostructures (HPHSs) and their application in diethylamine (DEA) sensing for the first time. The Pd-doped Ni-P2O5/MoO3 HPHS was synthesized by doping different proportions of palladium-containing precursors using hydrothermal and solid-state reaction techniques. The concentration of oxygen vacancies in the HPHS composite increased by increasing Pd doping from 2 to 6 weight percent (wt %) but later reduced, according to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Pd6%Ni-P2O5/MoO3 has the highest sensitivity to DEA (Ra/Rg = 42.5) and is 5.0 times and 42.5 times more sensitive than the pure Ni-P2O5/MoO3 HPHS (Ra/Rg = 8.5) and commercial ammonium phosphomolybdate (Ra/Rg = 1) at 175 °C toward 10 ppm DEA. Moreover, the DEA sensor exhibits a low detection limit (Ra/Rg = 3.5@1 ppm) with a wide dynamic response (Ra/Rg = 145.5@50 ppm). The remarkable improvement in DEA sensitivity is attributed to the hollow polyhedral structure, heterostructures, and oxygen vacancies formed by Pd doping. This study confirms that developing Pd-doped Ni-P2O5/MoO3 HPHSs provides an innovative approach for DEA sensors.

RESUMO

Objective The objective of this study is to assess the relationship between the site of tympanic membrane (TM) perforation and the type and degree of hearing impairment. The secondary objective was to compare the duration of the disease and the degree of hearing loss. Study design This is a prospective observational study. Place and duration of the study This study was carried out in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, from May 2021 to April 2022. Patients and methods Of all the screened patients, 77 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Patients aged 10-40 years with inactive mucosal chronic otitis media and unilateral perforation in one quadrant were included. The site of TM rupture was observed, and audiometric analysis was performed. Results The mean age of participants was 25 ± 8.61 years, with a preponderance of the female gender (57.1%). A total of 32 (41.6%), 19 (24.7%), 19 (24.7%), and seven (9.1%) perforations involved posterosuperior, anterosuperior, anteroinferior, and posteroinferior quadrants respectively. Conductive, mixed, and sensorineural hearing loss was found in 52 (67.5%), 18 (23.4%), and seven (9.1%) cases, respectively. Of all the subjects, 13 (16.9%) had the disease for < one year, 39 (50.6%) for one to five years, 17 (22.1%) for five to 10 years, and eight (10.4%) for > 10 years. There was a statistically significant association between the degree of hearing loss and the site of perforation. No significant association was found between the site of perforation and the type of hearing loss. Duration of disease and degree of hearing loss also had no significant association. Conclusion The extent of hearing loss was found to be directly influenced by the anatomical site of perforation, with the posterosuperior quadrant perforation producing the greatest degree of impairment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Genu valgum is one of the commonest deformities seen by the orthopaedicians. The most common cause is idiopathic but genu valgum secondary to nutritional deficiency is also fairly common in developing and third world countries. Supracondylar osteotomy and internal fixation with plate and screws, is the treatment of choice in older children and young adults, which is costly, requires a wide exposure, a second surgery for implant removal and risk of infection is more. This study was undertaken to measure the outcome of simple oblique percutaneous wedge-less metaphyseal supracondylar osteotomy of the distal femur and casting in older children and adolescents with Genu Valgum in a small centre catering mostly to patients from middle and low income households. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients aged between 12 and 22 years with genu valgum deformity with a tibiofemoral angle ≥15°, and an intermalleolar distance of more than 7 cm in unilateral and more than 10 cm in bilateral cases, who are not amenable to be treated with guided growth techniques, were included. Patients having knee instability, restriction of knee range of motion, genu recurvatum, tibial deformity component, open physis, were excluded from the study. The correction was undertaken by a simple supracondylar wedge-less metaphyseal short oblique osteotomy of the distal femur followed by immobilization with a long leg plaster of Paris cast. Functional outcome was assessed using Böstman et al. score. RESULTS: 46 limbs in 29 patients with a mean age of 14.5 years were operated. The mean follow-up of patients was 6 months. The preoperative radiological tibiofemoral angle (TFA) had a mean value of 19.89° which improved to a mean of 5.31° postoperatively. Intermalleolar distance (IMD) improved from a mean of 13.81 cm to 3.15 cm post-correction. Mean Lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA) improved from 77.11° to 87.20°. Knee score was excellent in all patients at 3 months and 6 months post intervention. There were no serious complications except superficial plaster sores in 4 patients, which healed uneventfully and temporary restriction of knee range of motion in 5 patients. All patients achieved a full range of knee motion after physical therapy. CONCLUSION: Supracondylar wedge-less short oblique metaphyseal distal femoral osteotomy and immobilization with plaster of Paris cast is a simple, cheap, safe & viable option for the correction of genu valgum deformity originating from distal femur, with minimal complications in older children and adolescents with limited growth potential, especially in low income countries and small centres.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Sheehan's Syndrome (SS) is one of the most important causes of hypopituitarism in developing countries with patients having varying degrees and severity of anterior pituitary hormone deficiency including growth hormone deficiency (GHD). SS is characterized by increased clustering of metabolic and proinflammatory risk factors predisposing them to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Coronary calcium deposits (CCD), a marker for significant coronary atherosclerosis, is used for evaluation in asymptomatic individuals of global cardiac risk to develop events related to coronary heart disease (CHD). This study therefore aimed to evaluate the prevalence of coronary artery disease in patients with SS appropriately replaced for pituitary hormone deficiencies but untreated for GHD. METHODS: Thirty patients previously diagnosed with SS and stable on a conventional replacement treatment for at least 6 months before the study and thirty age and Body Mass Index (BMI) matched controls were enrolled in this observational study. The subjects underwent detailed clinical, biochemical, and hormone analysis. Coronary multidetector computed tomography was performed in 19 SS patients and 19 healthy participants by a 16-row multislice scanner. Non contrast acquisitions were performed to detect coronary calcifications. Calcium was quantified by the Agatston score (AS) in all subjects. AS > 10 indicates increased CHD risk. RESULTS: The mean (± SD) age was 38.30 ± 10.73 years and the diagnostic delay was 11.35 ± 4.74 years. Patients with SS had significantly higher mean triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol concentrations on conventional replacement therapy. The prevalence of CCD was significantly higher in patients of SS compared to controls (42.1% vs. 5.3%; P = 0.023). The presence of CCD and AS > 10 were detected in 42.1% and 31.6% of patients respectively. The presence of significant calcification (Agatston score > 10) was documented in 75% of patients (6/8) of the SS patients with CCD compared to none in the control group (P = 0.019). (Left anteriordescending, 1; left circumflex, 2; right coronary artery, 2 and posterior descending, 1) CONCLUSION: Since coronary artery calcium is an independent predictor of CHD events, the presence of significant prevalence of CCD in patients with SS compared to healthy matched controls, undermines the importance of early risk stratification of SS individuals with plethora of conventional cardiovascular risk factors that are at relatively high risk to avoid the adverse vascular consequences.

RESUMO

Macrophages are professional phagocytic cells that play a critical role in initiating immune responses by presenting antigen and phagocytic clearance. The macrophages can be targeted for immunomodulation by beneficial microbes, such as probiotics. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of Saccharomyces boulardii against Clostridium perfringens infection in avian macrophage cell line HD11. In this study, HD11 macrophages were prestimulated with S. boulardii for 6 h and then infected with C. perfringens for 3 h. Results showed that S. boulardii enhanced phagocytosis and bactericidal capacity against C. perfringens by HD11 cells. The S. boulardii effectively promoted the mRNA expression of CD80, CD83, and CD197 cell-surface molecules in C. perfringens-infected HD11 cells. Moreover, we found that prestimulation with S. boulardii reduced the mRNA expression of CD40, toll-like receptor [TLR] 4, and TLR15 induced by C. perfringens and thereby downregulated the mRNA expression of myeloid differentiation primary response 88, TNF receptor associated factor 6, nuclear factor kappa-B p65 subunit, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase genes in HD11 cells. The upregulation of cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-10) and inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression in C. perfringens-infected HD11 cells were noticeably inhibited by S. boulardii pretreatment. Conclusively, these results might provide a new insight into the role of S. boulardii in regulating avian immune defense against C. perfringens invasion and immune escape.

RESUMO

Reticuloendotheliosis is an important immunosuppressive disease, associated with avian reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) infection, and causes notable economic losses worldwide. Glycoprotein gp90 is an important structural protein of REV, and considered to be the most important immunogenic antigen, which can induce neutralizing antibodies against REV. In this study, an optimized suspension culture system was developed and applied to secretory express the immunogenic surface antigen gp90. To achieve an optimal glycosylation, the gp90 was designed to secretory expressed into the supernatant of the cell culture, which also occurs in the natural protein maturation procedure of REV. Serum-free culture medium was introduced to simplify the purification process and reduce the production costs. Based on the purified glycosylated gp90, an oil-emulsion subunit REV vaccine candidate was developed and evaluated in chickens. The subunit gp90-based vaccine induced fast immune responses, high levels of antibodies (REV-specific antibody, gp90-specific antibody, and neutralizing antibody against REV), and preferential T helper 2 (Th2) (interleukin-4 secretion) not Th1 (interferon-γ secretion) response. Furthermore, the viremia induced by REV infection was significantly reduced in chickens immunized with the glycosylated gp90. Overall, an optimized secretory expression system for glycosylated gp90 was developed, and the glycosylated gp90 obtained in this study retained good immunogenicity and could be an attractive vaccine candidate to protect chickens against REV horizonal infection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare the natural radioactivity and excess life time cancer risk (ELCR) factor of soil in different regions of Pakistan during last decade. Soil contains various elements and compounds including naturally occurring radioactive elements (238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs). Human being, animals and plants are in health risk by contaminations of natural radioactivity in soil and environmental radiometric pollution. Transferring of large amount of the natural radioactive elements in human body by nutrients may cause carcinogenic effects in human body. Pakistani soil has six types as Indus Basin Soil, Bongar Soil, Khaddar Soil, Indus delta soil, Mountainous soil and Sandy Desert Soil. In some northern region of Pakistan, naturally occurring radioactive rocks like uranuium-238 and iridium concentrations present in Gharwandi, Aram, Kingri S, Vitakri Fort Munro, Dera Bugti, Kohlu and Sibbi districts. METHODS: In this reviewed data, gamma rays spectroscopy used to determine the concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K with the help of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. Only the data of HPGe detector collected because of comparisons of different regions of Pakistan. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Mostly, different gamma rays energy peaks of relevant daughter radionuclides of radioactive element were used such as the energy peak lines of daughter radionuclides 214Pb (295.21 and 352 KeV) and 214Bi (609 and 1,120 KeV) used for calculating the 226Ra concentration in soil. In the recent study, it is concluded that average values of concentrations of natural radioactivity in soil in central and north regions of Pakistan are higher than permissible limit but found permissible range in south region of Pakistan. Mean values of ELCR factor were found higher, equal and lower in central, north and south regions than permissible limit, respectively. Generally, no serious health hazard due to natural radioactivity in soil were found.

RESUMO

Since subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J) was first isolated in the United Kingdom in 1988, it has seriously hindered the development of the poultry industry worldwide. Although cases of ALV-J infection have been reported as early as 2001 in Pakistan, there was no further research on the isolation and molecular characteristics of ALVs. In the present study, we first isolated two ALVs from suspicious clinical samples that were collected from a desi chicken farm in Pakistan. The results of multiplex PCR and indirect immunofluorescent antibody assays confirmed that the two isolates (PK19FA01 and PK19SA01) belonged to ALV-J. The complete genomes of the two isolates were amplified, sequenced, and systematically analyzed. We found that gp85 of PK19FA01 was more similar to that of the prototype strain HPRS103, whereas gp85 of PK19SA01 was more similar to that of American strains. The two isolates contained an intact E element of 147 residues and had a unique 135 bp deletion in the redundant transmembrane of the 3' untranslated region. The U3 region of the two isolates was highly homologous to that of American ALV-J strains. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation, complete genome sequencing, and systematic molecular epidemiological investigation of ALV-J in Pakistan. Our findings could enrich epidemiological data and might contributed to more effective measures to prevent and control avian leukosis in Pakistan.

RESUMO

Inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), hydropericardium syndrome, and gizzard erosion associated with fowl adenovirus (FAdV) infections are reported globally and resulted in significant poultry industry economic losses. In 2018, severe IBH appeared in Pakistan in a 17-week-old layer flock. Subsequently, a FAdV-11 strain (designated as PKFAd18) was isolated from liver samples and identified based on phylogenetic analyses of the serotype-specific L1 region of the capsid hexon gene. There is no complete genome sequence of the Pakistani FAdV-11. This study successfully sequenced the complete genome of PKFAd18. The full genome of PKFAd18 contains 43 840 base pairs (bp) with a G + C content of 53.9 %, which is comparable to other FAdV serotypes. Similar to other FAdV-11 strains, PKFAd18 has only one fiber, while FAdV-1 and FAdV-4 have two fibers. Notably, PKFAd18 showed unique characteristics compared to other FAdV-11 strains. A natural large genomic deletion (1215 bp) appeared in tandem repeat region two, relative to the ON-NP2 strain. Phylogenetic analyses of the PKFAd18 penton gene showed higher homology with FAdV-9, highlighting potential natural recombination between FAdV-11 and FAdV-9. Moreover, the pathogenicity of PKFAd18 studied in specific-pathogen-free chickens showed that PKFAd18 is capable of inducing severe IBH and could be responsible for IBH in Pakistan. Thus, the first complete genome of FAdV-11 in Pakistan was sequenced in this study, which enriches the diversity of knowledge about FAdV-11 and is useful for developing diagnostics and vaccines for IBH induced by FAdV-11 in Pakistan.

RESUMO

In the last decade, radiation physics brought about a revolution in health science by improving scientific equipment and useful methodologies for measurement. Human beings are affected by ionizing radiations that radiate from radioactive elements. The quantity of radioactive elements is different inside and outside the earth's surface. Soil and water are exigencies of human lives which are contaminated by radioactive elements. These radioactive elements enter into the human body through drinking, eating and breathing. On reaching hazardous limits in the human body, these radioactive elements cause stomach cancer, lung cancer and leukemia. Measurement of radioactive elements in soil and water is helpful in monitoring the health issues caused by exposure to these elements. In Iraq, numerous studies about natural radioactivity, radon concentration and physiochemical parameters have been conducted by different researchers, of which most of the studies were conducted in Barsa, Nasirya, Najaf, Karbala, Baghdad, Balad, Kirkuk, Erbil, Mosul and Dohuk cities. This article aims to review and compile the studies conducted in these cities of Iraq from 2011 to 2019. In most articles, high-purity germanium (HPGe), RAD7 and CR-39 detectors are used for radioactivity and radon measurement. These cities are located in the low-high folded and Mesopotamian zones. From this study, it can be concluded that radon concentration in soil and water was greater in the Mesopotamian and lower in the low-high folded zones. Higher concentrations of natural radioactivity in water and soil were found in the low-high folded zone in Iraq. However, most of the conducted studies show that concentrations of radon and natural radioactivity are above the permissible limits recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and World Health Organization (WHO). The values of physiochemical parameters were found to be greater in the Mesopotamian zone, but overall they are not above the permissible limits.
